 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (12/13/04 12:18 PM) reply | + / - | Bill: You said you cleaned the printheads and ran a nozzle test, but you did not say how that Nozzle Test actually turned out. Are there nozzles actually not firing or missing on that test? You said that you installed a new ink cartridge, but you did not say if you are actually using New-Epson Ink Cartridges, or that you are using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges [Generic or Third-Party cartridges]. You did not say if both black and colors print poorly. Explain a little better just what that printing problem actually is. EXAMPLES: black spots and or lines on copies; void lines or white lines thru blacks or colors; poor colors or a particular color missing; poor blacks printed out; noises while printing. un another NOZZLE TEST and let us know what it actually looks like. Give us a little more info to go on and if we can help you further, we will try...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (12/13/04 2:17 PM) reply | +1 + / - | Bill: You can try running the Nozzle Test directly from your printer, with the Printer Cable removed/disconnected from the printer itself. That eliminates any possible problems coming from your Computer System [software or driver issues]. If the nozzle test ran directly from the printer, is still printing faintly, then I would have to guess that you may have an actual Hardware/Parts Failure [failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly]...It's of course possible that the Printhead Assembly may simply be clogged or partially clogged, but no way to really know. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through the Home Page on "fixyourownprinter.com", at http://fixyourownprinter.com/ , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged Printhead Assembly. I will e-mail you some additional info on using that kit, in case you want to try it...Its also possible that your problem is being caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair that sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side and backside areas of the Printhead Assembly. That build-up can actually deflect or cause the nozzles to print crooked, or only partially print. Once those two areas are thoughly cleaned, the problem will normally go away, unless its actually being caused by a Hardware/Parts Problem [such as a failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly]. Check for a couple of additional e-mails from me that should help in that area, in case you want to do the cleaning and at least eliminate that possibility...Good Luck! Denny Conway

(Victoria BC)...need to act fast.....and willing to try it. PS>>>thanx alot for your help...Heres hoping the solution would work....then I have time to save up for a LAZER printer ....LOL :)

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (12/14/04 9:23 AM) reply | + / - | Bill: You're welcome and I hope that info actually helps...You will have to check with "fixyourownprinter.com" to be sure, buy I believe they will ship that Epson Solution to you in Canada. There are other cleaning solutions available elsewhere, but they are not as good as the actual Epson Solution for flushing out the actual printhead nozzles, or trying to dissolve possible clogs in those nozzles...Until you get that solution [if actually needed], you can try the HOT DISTILLED WATER on those strips of coffee filters. Most inks are water soluable and the hot water will clean the underside & backside areas really well. Simply heat a cup of water in the microwave and dip the strips into it. Slightly wring out the excess water and place the strips under the printhead assembly for cleaning. Its even possible that cleaning may correct your possible printing problem and you may not actually need the Epson Cleaning Solution...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by John DC (12/29/04 2:16 PM) reply | + / - | Hey Bill, I'm having the exact same problem. My printer is two years old and not heavily used. I just replaced the cartridges [2nd time in two years] with original equipment Epson. I've done everything you have and I have no output whatsoever. My question is how difficult is it to access the print head for physical inspection? Dust/dirt/old ink etc sounds like a reasonable explanation. I hesitate to have this unit serviced due to 1)low initial cost 2)High service costs 3)logistics of delivering the printer to a service center without a car. So, how difficult is access to the printheead and how badly could I screw it up?

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (12/29/04 2:28 PM) reply | + / - | John: I'm not BILL, but I wanted to let you know that I don't ever recommend actually removing a Printhead Assembly from an Epson Ink Jet Printer. That assembly is very easy to damage and its easy to throw off the Factory settings as well. Its also a good chance, on your "CX5200", that its not actually the Printheads that are actually causing your problem. If your printers red ink light is not actually on, but it still will not print in black or colors [even though your cartridges have ink in them], then its possible that you may have a different problem, which unfortunatly seems to be quite common on the CX5200 Printer. If there is no actual red ink light on and you were to do a search on this Printer Repair Site, you would see that you are not alone in your problem. I've read several posted messages on this Printer Repair Site on just that particular problem [new ink cartridges installed and now won't print at all]. I recommend that you do a general search on the "fixyourownprinter.com" printer repair site, under your CX5200 printer and then you can read about other peoples experiences, their advise and even what they have tried, sometimes successfully. It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a Hardware/Parts Failure, but no way for me to really know. It seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, as normal. You might want to check out the BLANK OUTPUT INFORMATION PAGE, located at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html and see if it applies in your case...HERE'S A PREVIOUS POSTING BY "WES", ON THAT COMMON PROBLEM: Wes 7/11/2004 14:19:40 Re: Epson cx5200 ink problems. The most common problem found with the CX5200 is the tubing on the cap asselbly becomes disconnected. The cap assembly can't clean the print head if the tube is detached. The print head face may also need to be cleaned as well as the print head itself. For info try these two links http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/Printhead.html http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/phface.html . And for more info on trouble shooting the CX5200 try this link http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/CX5200TS1.html and for disassembly info try here http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/CX52001.html . I hope this helps, Wes....I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about other peoples reports, just in case it happens to apply in your case...Good Luck! Sure it MAY be....but Highly unlikely IF we are ALL having similar problems.Like myself, I'm sure NO ONE is achiving any results from these postings. Might as well simply say.."you're screwed... BUY a NEW printer!!!" I've gone BEYOND any of this board suggestions and thru expert technicians...now have sent my printer into Epson...who were really good over the phone and honored my printer warranty..even though it has expired. Should expect it back sometime this week.I'll keep you up to date John on my results.....PS>> my next printer will be a laserjet>> highly recommended vs. ANY inkjet >>BTW>>>thanx again Denny...

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (12/30/04 9:56 AM) reply | + / - | Bill: The reason that I keep reposting that general information, is that most people simply do not do a SEARCH on this Printer Repair Site, to read the previously posted information. If they would say they already tried the previously posted replies and it did not actually help, then I would not bother even replying. Because I work for an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", I'm legally limited to what information and help that I can give. I simply volunter to try and help when I can, with what general information that I can supply. If Epson Company is actually replacing printers that are past there actual warranty period [like other people have also stated has happened], then I guess you are getting an answer from Epson Company, at least indirectly, on the quality of certain models of their printers...At any rate, I hope you have a Happy New Years and wish you luck on the replacement printer that Epson Company is giving you, for your old printer...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (12/30/04 3:43 PM) reply | + / - | Bill: Unfortunatly, it seems like few people actually do a SEARCH on this Printer Repair Site, to research their printers possible problems and obtain any available information that has previously been posted. Working for an "Epson Authorized Service Dealor", I'm legally limited to what information and help, that I can release. I simply volunter to help with Epson Printer questions and problems when I can, in my spare time while at work. Most of the help I can supply, is simply general information, especially on cleaning and servicing, which covers the majority of most Epson Printer problems. I've read on this Printer Repair Site, of Epson Company actually replacing other peoples out-of-warranty printers, just like they are replacing yours. If Epson Company is replacing out-of-warranty printers, then I would have to say that it seems like they are recognizing that maybe they have a problem...At any rate, have a Happy New Year...Denny Conway

Should I just use another Photo suite ??

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (2/8/05 12:16 PM) reply | + / - | Alex2x: I'm sorry, but I cn't help you with that edge to edge printing problem, because thats normally a software related problem, such as a setting in that software and I don't actually work on the computer related problems. You may even have to check directly with Epson Company, just to find out if your "CX5200" is capable of printing edge to edge. you may be able to get help directly from the "Epson Technical Support Department". At least that way you are dealing with a technician thats trained on your particular model, by Epson Company. To see available phone numbers for technical support, go on-line to Epson @ " http://www.epson.com ", or call the Epson Automated Support Locator @ 1-800-442-2110 [press 1, then 1 & following prompts]. If your printer is out of warranty, you will need a credit card, before the technicians can help you, because there is a charge for technical support over the phone. You can also e-mail the "Epson Technical Support Department", for possible free help or advice, at http://www.epson.com and then click-on "Proceed With E-Mail". They state on their web-site, that they "will respond via e-mail within 1 business day"....As far as the printers print quality problems: Its possible that your problem is being caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair that sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side and backside areas of the Printhead Assembly. That build-up can cause the Printhead Nozzles to fire crooked, or sometimes only partially fire. Its kind of like a clog on the outside of that printhead assembly, that causes the ink to not print out correctly. Once those two areas are thoughly cleaned, the problem will normally go away, unless its actually being caused by a hardware/parts problem [such as a failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly]. Check for a couple of e-mails from me that should help in that area, in case you want to do the cleaning and at least eliminate that possibility...There is an "Epson CX5200 Disassembly Instruction Page", available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/cx52001.html , that may be of some help. There is also an "Epson CX5200 Error/Troubleshooting Page", available to view at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/cx5200TS1.html , that may also be of some possible use. Other than that, you would probably need to try and locate an actual Service Manual, to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals for most printers, from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around +/- ). If that source is not available, then I would recommend that you go to the "Compass Micro Inc" web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm and check with them directly, to see if they have a Service Manual or Reset Procedure available yet for your printer. Several people have posted that they have manuals available for the newer printers, that are not actually available from other normal sources. I HAVE NOT CHECKED ON ANY PARTICULAR PRINTER MODELS, BUT HERE ARE SOME OTHER WEB-SITES THAT YOU CAN CHECK WITH FOR SERVICE MANUALS: You will have to check the following web-sites for availability [some may be able to order or locate Service manuals for you] and pricing: http://www.manuals4you.com , http://www.sm.copyprofi.net/index.htm , http://www.servicemanuals.net/(qxdgvu55gnxp1r55phmu5d45)/default.aspx , http://www.docteurtech.com/CAN-Import/can-import.html , or http://www.user-service-manuals.com/epson-service-manuals.htm...Good Luck! | Re: Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Anonymous (2/9/05 5:18 AM) reply | + / - | Denny: I've read most of your postings and your advice seems to be sound. I moved the print heads over to have a look and there is a lot of wet ink in my 5200. I figured that there would be no harm done in removing it so have soaked a lot up using cotton buds - needed over 20 just to make an impression. I don't have the fix-your-own-printer juice yet but have ordered some and they seem happy to ship to the UK, just $4 postage and $1.75 insurance. Like a lot of other guys and gals out there I had just about given up and was thinking of moving to the Brother DCP110C which has a fax modem built into the all in one.
Anyway, I took some paper towels and put them in dry. I know you said damp, but I guess I had nothing to lose, and had to do this over a dozen times before they came out dry. I reckon I must have tried cleaning the heads so much the thing is flooded worse than a carburettor on a cold morning.
Net result was a great improvement, so I'm looking forward to receiving the cleaning materials.
Only one real question, I'm having trouble locating the tube you mention. I haven't dismantled anything, just moved the heads to one side with the power off like you said. With all that ink about it may be hidden, but doesn't it sound like it is off if the ink is everywhere?
TIA
John

A red arrow even points out that tube assembly...There is also an "EPSON C82 Disassembly Instructions Page", that is available to view at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/c821.html , that may be of some help to you in at least removing the Top Cover Assembly [Page #27 lists HOUSING REMOVAL], in case you want to try and do that commonly needed repair...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by John-UK (2/10/05 2:54 AM) reply | + / - | Hi Denny,
First of all, apologies for the anonymous posting. My first time on the forum and I had not registered, so thanks for getting back to me.
Your advice and links first class. I had not noticed that the tube connection was hidden by the sliding tray with the pad. Using my trusty pencil I gently moved the tray to the right and found that the tube IS connected.
If the gunk is not being cleared then could it be that the other end of the tube is disconnected? I followed it as far as I can see but it looks to be going towards the front of the printer and then goes out of sight.
Is checking the other end complicated?
Thanks again
John

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (2/10/05 12:26 PM) reply | + / - | John: I reread your first posted message and can't really tell what your exact origional problem, actually is. If your printer simply won't print out any ink at all and that hose is not off, then it's possible that one of those hoses may simply be clogged. It has been reported several times, that people have found those tiny hoses to actually be clogged and that stops the system from working. Unfortunatly, that would require a lot of in-depth disassembly just to check it out and see if those hoses were clogged or even off somewhere else. I have never had to disassemble one of the newer "CX" models, but I'm sure it will be a time consuming procedure. Most Epson Authorized Service Dealers are not actually trained on the newer "C","CX", "R" or "RX" models, so I cannot really be of much actual help to you. Most of those models are so new that I have not even seen one in my shop that was not actually under warranty still. Even then, Epson Company does not even allow their dealers to work on those models under warranty. They simply send a replacement printer, in exchange for the defective unit thats under warranty and the defective printer is then sent back to Epson. Even when those printers are out of warranty, at $60 an hour labor rate, its hard for them to be economical to repair, if major disassembly is involved. If those previously listed disassembly instructions [pages] don't help you enough, you may need to try and find an actual Service Manual to buy for reference, disassembly, servicing and troubleshooting. I would recommend that you go to the "Compass Micro Inc" web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm and check with them directly, to see if they have a Service Manual available yet for your printer. Several people have posted that they have manuals available for the newer printers, that are not actually available from other normal sources...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (2/10/05 12:47 PM) reply | + / - | John...Another thought: When you run a "Nozzle Test", if just some of the printhead nozzles are not printing, then its possible that there may be a partial clog in that printhead assembly. It's also possible that you may even have an actual hardware/parts problem [failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly], but normally the most common problem is clogging of the printhead nozzles, especially if you were actually using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges. I know you said that you already ordered some of that "Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution". It might be easier to try that solution first, injected directly into the printhead nozzles, just in case there is possible clogs. If that does not help, then you could always do the in-depth disassembly & troubleshooting...IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never dissolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller Epson Ink Jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Good Luck! | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by John-UK (2/11/05 3:04 AM) reply | + / - | Denny, My original problem appeared to be feint and broken (chopped?) black output, but not from all nozzles. Also kinks in vertical lines and breaks in the nozzle test pattern.
Sometimes the yellow nozzle check pattern would be contminated by black output. I even had one yellow pattern that was totally black.
All nozzle check patterns come out feint.
After reading your postings I looked under the tray that has the pad on it and found a lot of ink and ink-like gunge. Nobody else seems to have reported this.
Soaking up most of this with cotton buds and dry paper towels under the print heads seems to have improved things no end.
I get pretty good output if I change the paper setting to inkjet paper and the quality to fine or photo - but not perfect, just much better than before.
Photo quality output using gloss photo paper has a lot of banding.
I also get better results if I increase the top and bottom margins. The epson blank page prints pretty good apart from the bottom right hand block of four. Also I think I am running out of yellow but the status monitor does not report this.
My local epson repair centre seems to think that I need a new head and the motherboard to be reset. Minimum labour charge is about US$75 and new print heads would run at about US$105, both figures are before tax at 17 1/2 per cent.
The way things are, I am able to get decent results but not on copy paper or in economy mode. I think I can live with that and again, I hope this will improve when I have used the cleaning materials.
I have a standby printer but it is only an epson LQ100 24 pin dot matrix and is really slow by todays inkjet standards. I will just have to use it if I need a prolonged soak for the heads.
Will I need four syringes if I want to do all four heads at the same time? I can get them pretty easy from my vet in 1ml, 2ml and 5ml sizes.
Needless to say, everything depends on a successful cleaning operation. If it works, then okay, but if not then I think I am going for seperate printer and scanner next time, and not DuraBrite inks.
Denny, I'm really grateful for all your help and attention to detail. I wonder how you find time for all the posted problems and hold down a job as an epson engineer/technician as well.

I do use multiple syringes, with a small amount of that cleaning solution in each one. That way, you can clean out all the printhead nozzles at the same time. Sometimes you may need to leave a syringe installed for several days, to try and dissolve a possibly bad clog or clogs. If you are only using one syringe and have several colors causing problems, that can take a lot more time [sometimes]. Remember to avoid using too much pressure on the plunger of the syringe, as that can damage the tiny nozzles...Denny Conway

How can I asure that they are unclogged without reinstalling it into the printer.

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (2/17/05 11:35 AM) reply | + / - | babur: To my knowledge, you can't check them, unless possibly you had the equipment that they have at the Epson Factory. Its too bad that you did not post a message for help, prior to removing those Printhead Assemblies, because we could advised you not to do it. Printheads are easy do damage and its also easy to throw off the factory settings and then they will not actually work. Its even possible to damage those printhead nozzles, using the "Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution" and syringe method, if you are not real careful. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Oubliette! (2/19/05 6:57 AM) reply | + / - | UNBELUNBELIEVABLE! Following incredible trouble free, precise quality, occasional printing for just under 18 months my Epson Stylus 5200 has decided to malfunction. I have in the past said nothing but good things about the machine – even recommending the product to family members and friends. My problem arose when, on printing, every 5th line seemed to miss print. Because my magenta cartridge was running low, I decided to replace it with a BRAND NEW Epson magenta cartridge. Following installation, the magenta failed to print at all. By this time the black was running low so I decided to replace the black cartridge with a BRAND NEW genuine Epson black cartridge thinking this may have been the problem. Over the course of 4 hours, countless head cleaning and nozzle checks I decided to call the peak rate customer help line number only to be held on the line for 25 minutes whilst going through the same procedure as I had been through so many times before (head cleaning, switching off, switching on, head cleaning etc etc). The gentleman said at the end of the call that the print heads were an integral part of the printer and that repair would cost more than the purchase of a new one. He then recommended that I purchased a new one!!!!!!!!!!!!
After asking whether there is any compensation for the loss of almost £50. (one black cartridge & one magenta cartridge) I was told that I should have contacted the help line before placing the new cartridges in the printer and in doing so he could have diagnosed the problem earlier (blocked heads) and therefore saved the cartridges!?#? Incredible…. The thing is, the printer looks as good as the day in which it was taken from its box, ie immaculate condition. I begrudge putting my hand into my pocket yet again only to find a similar problem arising.
In short, would I recommend Epson? What do you think? From an incredibly disillusioned disgusted yet faithful Epson customer.

However, you may be able to use this info as reference, when dealing with Epson UK. I cannot promise you that Epson UK will do or act the same as Epson America, but thats about the only thing I can suggest at this point...Here's a couple of previously posted messages, that may even apply to your "CX5200": Re: clogged Epson CX5200 by Gary (2/11/05 3:58 PM): My CX5200 was purchased in June of 2003, so it was quite out of warranty. No black and magenta would print out, and cyan and yellow was spotty, even after changing Epson brand carts, and multiple head cleanings. I called the US Epson Service line: (562)276-4382 Hours: Mon.- Fri. 6AM-6PM (PT). Since it was out of warranty, I had to pay $9.95 on my charge card to get to talk with a human, who had me clean 2 more times, pull out each cart, cover the spout with a piece of paper and shake it for 10 seconds, and put them back in, and then head clean once more. None of this changed the nozzle check, so he then gave me a Reference number, and transferred me to the Customer Satisfaction group. She offered me 3 choices: 1) a $40 off coupon code for any purchase on their website. 2) a discount price on 3 different printers: - CX4600 for $90 - $30 rebate = $60 - CX6600 for $160 - $50 rebate = $110 - RX500 for $190 - $50 rebate = $140 3) Free repair and shipping of my printer (they send you a UPS label by mail, you pack and call UPS, they repair in 7 - 10 days, and send it back). Since I could find the RX500 at Sam's Club for $149 without a mail in rebate, I figured that wasn't much of a deal. I opted for the free repair. [OR] Re: cx5200 not printing by SeaHawk (2/16/05 6:28 PM): Ok good news! I had a cx5200 and recomended it to numerous customers of mine. Recently mine and a customers quit printing as you described. I called Epson and described the problem and they walked me threw some diagnostic steps and made sure I was using only Epson inks. After all that they sent me a new (well probally new refurb) cx5400. Same thing with my customer! Also note both printers were out of their year warranty!....Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by John-UK (2/26/05 3:22 AM) reply | + / - | Hi Denny, I've done everything you said, and thanks for the off forum advice/tech notes. Cleaned under the heads, but problem still persisted. Ordered the Epson Ink Jet Head Cleaning Solution - that took over a week to arrive by air-mail. I took out the black cartridge and used a Q tip dipped in the juice just to clean around the part where the tube fits on and picked up a lot of half dry ink there, so probably worth doing. Okay, heart in my mouth I filled the syringe and fitted it to the nozzle. I remembered how you said to be gentle so I was amazed at how little pressure I needed. I dropped in half a syringe and then wished I'd put a paper towel in first. Anyway, put a wad of towel in then and it came away filthy. I slid the head left and right several times in the hope that this would start to break up the ink deposits in there, and it certainly did. I repeated this process - half a syringe full onto clean paper towel about nine or ten times and then the towels were coming away pretty clean, but I was kinda surprised that I was getting lots of magenta and cyan ink stain too, not much yellow though. I dried things off under the heads with dry towel. I refilled the syringe and gave it just o.2 ml and left it for an hour, then gave it another 0.2 ml. Repeated this over about 12 hours, renewing the soak up towel when necessary, and sliding the head left and right. After about 12 hours things were looking good, so I tried drying everything off and printing a test pattern. Of course nothing came out because the ink had not charged. I changed all the cartridges and tried again. The test pattern was not good, so I printed a page of black, and this was not great, so I was getting pretty despondent by now. Next I removed the printer via the control panel and reloaded all the drivers again from the original epson CD. No different. Now after a bit of playing around with the Print Preferences and settings things are really looking up.
My next step was to do a print alignment. Everything was reasonable except the horizontal alignment. There is only one pattern set on this and I had to realign 5 times using the #7 before I got a rasonable alignment.
I set the paper to be bright white ink jet paper and this helped. Next I took out the high speed check mark (tick). Next took out the Edge Smoothing tick. Well to cut this short I tried just about every combination and this worked: Paper = Bright White Inkjet Print Quality = Fine Check Minimize Margins Check Edge Smoothing Uncheck High Speed Uncheck Black Ink Only I get really good documents now. Not as fast as I might hope for but really good.
Next step was to try photo printing. Bright White Inkjet Paper set to Best Photo Click photo enhance and digital camera correction and presto - no banding. Next a nozzle check and this was terrible - so I give up on that - all I need is good quality printing and I'm getting that. My only thoughts are that when I do a head clean the ink has to go somewhere - there are no puddles under the printer so I'm wondering if the purge tank (is that the right name?) is full or perhaps it is vacuum operated and some little check valve or something is stuck or clogged? Anyway, I don't give a damn - I got clean and good hard copy again. Two things are for sure: 1 I will never use pigment/durabrite ink again. 2 My next printer/all-in-one will not be an epson. I'm kinda sorry to feel this way because I've used epson printers for about twenty years now and have always considered them to be top class. I know this has gone on a bit, but I wanted to let you know how I got on and thank you for all your time and help. Also I wonder if anybody else might get good results by changing their Printing Preferences too.
Cheers Denny, and best regards,
John

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (2/28/05 10:08 AM) reply | + / - | John: You're welcome and good job on having gotten as far as you did...All the ink that is purged/lost during the printhead cleaning cycles and normal printing cycles, simply flows thru those tiny tubes or hoses, to the Waste Ink Pads, located basically underneath the carriage assembly area...Just to let you know: You're right, the older Epson Printers, as well as the older HP Printers, were made a lot better then the newer models and manufactors of printers are now made. Its basically turned into a disposable world anymore, especially with small inexpensive ink jet printers. The new ink jet printers [from all manufactors] are made so cheaply, that the have basically become throw away printers. Anytime something goes wrong, its cheaper to buy another inexpensive printer, than having your old one repaired. It seems like its almost cheaper to buy another inexpensive printer, rather than even replacing the ink cartridges in the one you own. Basically, any printer under $100 is considered a disposable printer in the Printer Industry. Even the quality of the printers from $100 to $150, is starting to look like they are becoming more disposable as well. The older ink jet printers, were just built better and lasted longer. Of course they also cost more, so you paid for that quality. As prices of new printers started to come down a few years ago, it seems like the quality started to come down as well. The majority of people seem to buy those inexpensive printers at a high rate, so in turn printer manufactors keep building cheaper printers to compete with each other. To keep the prices lower, I guess something has to be sacraficed along the way. Unfortunatly with new ink jet printers, it seems like its the quality of the new products being produced. As usual, it turns out to be the consumer who ends up really suffering the most...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (3/8/05 11:47 AM) reply | + / - | Anonymous: Because of that paper jam, its common for the resulting jam to cause problems with the underside area of the printhead assembly. The wet ink may have been smeared in that area, or some related type of problem. Try running several sets of "Printhead Cleaning Cycles" and "Nozzle Tests" and see if the problem clears up. It sounds like the magenta ink nozzles are not actually printing, but you will be able to tell from the nozzle test. If after running up to 6 sets of those tests, the printing related problem is not corrected, you may have a different hardware/parts problem, but no way for me to know. Its even possible that you may have a possibly bad or failing magenta ink cartridge and may need to change it, to see if that helps or not. Just in case a new magenta cartridge does not help, I will e-mail you some in-depth cleaning information for that underside area of the actual printhead assembly. You may want to do that cleaning, to at least eliminate that very common problem and see if it helps or not...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Be sure your husband checks out the check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html . That information page may be of some help, especially as you already know that tube has actually come off. There is an "Epson CX5200 Disassembly Instruction Page", available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/cx52001.html , that may also be of some help...The following previously posted info, may also be of some interest to your husband: Re: clogged Epson CX5200 by Drew (2/21/05 1:26 PM): I have disassembled the unit and re-attached the tube (below the capping unit) to the white transition piece (Black tube above, white plastic attachment piece, clear hose below). The trick, I think, is to coat the outside (ONLY THE OUTSIDE) with threadlock compound afterwards. This should keep the piece in place for the future. Maybe someone could clue EPSON in on this. This solution has not yet stood the test of time; let me know if your results vary! Threadlock may attack some plastics. I used Loctite 242 #24206 (Methacrylic Ester) to bond the exterior of the connection from the black tube to the clear tube and in between. I did NOT use any inside any of the hoses. I cleaned the hoses with simple green prior to bonding them (inside and out). This repair (disassembly and reassembly) is for intermediate experience; there are several critical connections which are difficult to re-seat and align properly. Read the above referenced instructions CAREFULLY.....Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Gary (3/12/05 7:15 PM) reply | + / - | My epson stylus CX5200 has an error message that reads "printer error see your documentation and call service if necessary". Initially my printer wouldn't print in BW or Color (Yes, I replaced the cartridges), I discovered that the clear tube beneath the head cleaning unit was disconnected. I re-connected the tube. When I turned on the printer I received the above listed message. several friends & co-workers have experienced the same problems. Someone at Epson probably received a big bonus for discovering a way to force customers into shipping their printers in for repair. What Epson didn't count on was losing their customer base to Hewlett Packard. Each HP printer cartridge has its own printer head, so even if your head clogged due to minimal use (which is common among all printers) at least you can physically remove and clean the HP printer head. This is my last attempt at trying to resolve this problem. I refuse to purchase another Epson printer, just to have something like this happen again. So if anyone (epson techs) can give any FREE advice it will be appreciated, if not, off I go to see the wizard, he agreed to guide me to a Hewlett Packard distributor.

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (3/14/05 11:41 AM) reply | + / - | Anonymous: Reguarding your question, "Why does only the color ink band?"...Either you have a bad ink cartridge or cartridges, or the color printhead assembly is clogged, or you have an actual hardware/parts failure. It's possible that you may even have an actual failing Printhead Assembly, Main Board Assembly, or other part failure [such as a possibly clogged hose]. However, normally the most common problem is clogging of the printhead nozzles, especially if you were actually using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged printhead assembly. When it opens, click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" thats listed for your particular printer. The Epson solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson printhead cleaning solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again, but that will only help if they are actually clogged. It was basically designed by Epson Company for use on their older models of ink jet printers, but people have been using it on the newer models, with success reported. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. If you remove the "Top Cover Assembly", then you can leave the printhead assembly parked in its normal home position, at the far right side. Then any ink & fluids that are purged during the cleaning, will normally travel thru the cleaning station hoses, to the waste ink pads. If you have the "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly", positioned away from the home position, then you will need to slide strips of paper towels or coffee filters under that assembly, to soak up any expelled ink and fluids, or it can get all over. | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Denny Conway (3/15/05 1:43 PM) reply | + / - | Coop: I can't truthfully say how your "polyacrylic resin", or even the silicone sealant will work, or how they will effect the plastic and the tubing, over time. All I can tell you is to read the directions and see if that resin is useable on most plastics, vinals and rubber materials. If so, then its your choice to try it or not. My guess is that most glue type sealants will last longer than the printer, but no way for me to really know...Denny Conway

The purge tube is still connected but all of a sudden - lots of gunk in the small white tray above the tube... would you suggest just cleaning it?
Why in the world can't we buy a decent printer and not have to spend either the time or money to maintain it? Cartridges cost enough...

 | Re: Epson Stylus C84 printer help by Nichole (6/9/05 5:17 PM) reply | + / - | Here is what happened...there was something off the net I wanted to print. I clicked on print and walked away. The next day, to my surprise, my computer was still in the print mode. The paper apparently jammed, causeing an EXTREME amount of ink to be distributed onto the 'non-moving' paper. It was quite saturated. I can see some spots where saturated paper is stuck under the intake rollers. I have also noted that there are a few "directional tabs" that imply ability to remove the back cover. (for further removal of obstructions, I assume). I have tried inserting objects to press on these tabs, (in both directions) to no avail. However...not in any of my booklets on my printer, (EPSON Stylus C84) show a diagram of instruction as to remove these parts. Any advise? I certainly do not want to break it. But I feel it is essential to get this back peice off to be able to remove the remaining saturated paper to prevent an obviouse 2nd paper jam. (wasting valuable ink to boot). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I changed the print cartridges in my printer last night and it just quit working. Today I read about your solution, tried it tonight and it worked! The tubing on the cap asssembly came disconnected.
I didn't dissasemble the whole printer like suggested in one of the threads, instead I moved the print cartridges out of the way, like changing a cartridge. Then, I slid the white cap with the black printer pad to the right and could see the tubing. With my husbands help, we each took a pair of needle nose pliers and scooted the tube back in place. Tada! It's fixed!
Thanks for the help! Debbo

My cx5400 started to miss lines horizontal banding when printing, then sort of splurge out - have done head cleaning, nozzle check tried realigning the heads, but can't tell about the black or white band as the results are stripes but it's impossible to read the numbers. Changed the black ink as it was low - have always used Epson - Basically my problem seems like the same as everyone else.
Now the crunch I have 7 days before I emigrate - I was planning on taking the CX5200 with me - it would travel as cargo by ship. I don't have time to try to fix it - as preparations for departure take priority - Is it even worth taking?? Or shall I just dump the thing. Which seems a waste it still looks like new it's 18 months old. The real bummer is I now have to dash all over town to try and find a photo- copy machine for my docs - talk about bad timing!!!
Is thiscx500 worth the effort to try and fix when it has a 6 week sea journey ahead of it?
any thoughts,
Cee

Whenever I try printing a document in black ink, some of the lines print out perfectly fine, some don't really print out at all, and other lines are only partially there. However, when I print in just color, everything prints out perfectly fine. I have run the head cleaning on the printer, but that didn't help at all. Furthermore, I have cleaned out some of the wet ink along the bottom of the printer, and that hasn't led to anything either. There is a substantial amount of ink remaining in the cartridge, so I am not sure what to make of this problem. Do you have any suggestions?

You need good light, two curved clamps, some alcohol soaked cotton swabs and a clip.
First, maximize the exposue; printer asemby slid to left and all ink catridges removed.
Second, the tray with the ink colecting pad and tube can slide to the right abot 3/4 inch. I used a small paper clamp style clip to hold it to the right (spring loaded and it will recoil back to the left without the clip)
Third, cleaned surface ink off of both the outside of the clear tube and the white plastic nipple hanging down from the end of the black tube comng down from the tray. This makes it easier to manipulate both back to mating.
Fourth and hardest, I got a locking curved clamp onto both the clear tube and second one onto the white plastic nipple. Both are somewhat mobile. You should clamp onto the clear tube about 1/4 inch from end of tube. If you clamp on closer to the end, it will flatten the end and prevent attachment.
Then, slide the clear tube onto the white nipple. Took me about 7 tries, but got it. Be very gentle releasing the clamps; it is esy to accidently pull the tube off by accent.
Let us know if you get it

Alcohol doesn't have any effect on water-based ink. I thought everyone knew that. It's only been mentioned several hundred times on this forum. Then there is the wasted exercise of reattaching the tube. It's only going to come off again 'cause the end is clogged with dried ink. Fifth, ignore all the useless advice above. The printer has to be disassembled to clean the tube properly. If you're going to do that, be advised there is a hidden screw under the label of the control panel. You have to peel that up or the printer doesn't come apart.

 | Re: Epson Stylus CX5200 printer help by Wes (1/22/09 9:08 AM) reply | + / - | THE REASON WHY THE PRINTER IS USING COLOR IS BECAUSE THE PRINTER USES COMPOSITE BLACK. WHICH IS MADE FROM THE COLOR INK CARTRIDGES. ALL INK JET PRINTER USES THIS METHOD. GOOGLE COMPOSITE BLACK FOR MORE INFO. ALSO CLEANINGS WILL USE INK.
"COMPOSITE BLACK"
The creation of black from cyan, magenta and yellow inks. Mixing inks is not a perfect operation, and composite black is often muddy. This is why a solid black fourth ink is used in professional printing (CMYK: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, blacK).

My printer is working now, and all it took was a bit of poking around. Thank you for all your help, those who posted.
