HP Officejet 6110 scan error

HP Officejet 6110 scan error by alejandro (12/1/04 9:57 PM) reply+2 + / -
WHen turning on the printer an annoying (grininding) noice starts. After a bit, an error message is displayed (scan error). Printer has been used very little. Scanner enven less.
Called HP and they were not of much use (suggested taking it for service to Staple or CompUSA while they no longer service the "out of warranty"printers).
Any ideas
TIA

There are essentially no scanner parts available for your printer from HP if you have an outright failure. I suggest cleaning the underside of the scanner glass. Also Lubricate the rod that the scanner head runs on. Use a few drops of Tri-Flow or sewing machine oil. You can get Tri-Flow at cycle shops in small squeeze bottles.

Bert
Thanks for the answer
Unfortunatelly problem is still not fixed despite the implementation of your suggestions.
HP support is just useless. Now they offer an "exchange at a discount".

Did you ever find out what is wrong with your printer? mine is doing the same thing.

My HP 6110 All In One also is showing Scanner Failure - which it did from the start but turning of and back on usually fixed it. The last coupe times it has been harder and harder to reset. It usually happens after I change the cartridge. I would like to know how may others have this problem. At this point I have been trying for a couple days to reset to no avail. Tried all the tricks in the book and also spoke to HP tech on line. But I too can have 15% off a new HP - doesn't come with a free bottle of asprin so I think I will pass.

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by leanbean (8/21/05 2:34 PM) reply + / -
hey,
i am having the same issue with my 6110. I use it with a mac, tiger, and often have to push "copy" just so prints go through, otherwise nothing happens.

The clicking started a while back and happens on startup of the printer -

power-on - after the hum of the scan head - a few whines of the small scan head motor - a fast paced clicking happens, as if a cog is turning against another that is fixed.

Turning off and on and unplugging helps but it has been getting worse.

Today I opened it up and see that the scanner head on startup is moved forward a bit, then slowly returned back to the 0 point in short bursts - (the few whines of the small motor). Once it gets there to the end of the track the motor continues and the clicking starts. The head is not registering that it is at the end of the track. I could not locate any sensors or anything on the scan head. This seems like a software problem but I am not sure.

Any help would be fantastic.

I fixed the problem by reading this thread:
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/22386

the glass underside just needed a cleaning near the scan head.

I spoke to HP tech and that was useless - unless of course I wanted a 15% discount on a new printer. Downloaded updated software...also useless. I even took it apart and cleaned the glass, oiled the "darn" thing - I give up. If anyone finds out what is really up with this unit let me know.

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by Anonymous (12/25/05 3:34 PM) reply + / -
Anyone find an answer yet? I have cleaned, & oiled everything under the scanner, many times, still no luck. I have the same problem as leanbean.

This post helped me with the same problem...amazing how cleaning a little cloudiness off of the underside of the glass affects how the scanner engine senses the start position!

I Work for HP Tech support ..

WE DO OUR BEST TO HELP OUT AS MANY AS WE CAN ! BUT not all problems are fixable sometimes.. Just like when a car breaks down is it always a guarentee a car can be fixed ? ..

And the reason probably why HP wont take it back and offering you an exchange is because the unit is out of warranty ( hence u get 365 days of warranty time from the date of ur purchase)

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by Lperkins (2/1/06 7:22 PM) reply + / -
I am also having the same problem where I have turn my printer on and off for serval days at a time. Still not able to get the printer to for days at a time.

I have a problem when HP not supporting a problem with a printer when it look like they sold us a defective printer. If we all refuse to buy/purchase another HP produce maybe someone at HP will fix this problem.

Maybe we all sure make a formal compliant with someone like Chapter 7 on Your Side and maybe HP would resolve this problem.

I call HP tech support but because i am out of warranty, they won't tell me anything with out $30 payment. I just need to know how to put the thing back together. Help if you can. Thanks.

I can't get the print cartridges to align on my hp 6610 printer. It will not print any documents until this is done. Any suggestions?

I'm trying to figure out how to take the scanner apart to clean it. I took the screws out but there are plastic clips in the front i'm afraid I might to break. Any suggestions are appreciated.

OTHER PRINTING PROBLEMS SOLUTION
If you don't have a mechanical problem, I highly suggest updating the firmware (not software). They have updates on the HP website. I hope this helps some of you.

I am having the same problem with my 6110 that I inheritted from the previous business owner. I initially thought that it was dirty power, and took it home, pluged it into good quality lines, but the same problem still affects it. Sometimes it prints, but after running for a while, it simply stops printing. Resetting doesn't help...
JUNK...JUNK...JUNK...JUNK
I used to be very much in the HP printer camp.
I'll be taking this thing out to the desert for target practice...or may donate it for a write-off.

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by MichaelFat (9/23/06 4:59 AM) reply + / -
The problem appears to be inhererrent with all the printers of this model. I was told by the authorised repair center that they have many of these and it costs more to repair than to buy a new one. Also appears that HP is hiding behind a warranty period of 365 days when this model printer is in fact a lemon. For the cost of this printer, you would expect it to last atleast 2-3 years.

Try gpoing to RUN....type "net stop spooler"...then type "net start spooler" That worked usually but the it happens again periodically

IT worked. had the same problem,
Step 1.Power off. Loosen 5 screws at top
2.Lift up about 30 degrees so you can see Rod scaner moves on
3.Used Spanjaard lubricating switch cleaner on right of rod.
4. Clean under glas on right hand side.
5.power up.

Hi guys.

I had exactly the same problem with my OfficeJet 6110 as reported above (i.e. the scan head not knowing where the end-stop is).

This is how to fix it (this method worked for me)

1) Lift up the scanner/copier hinged lid. Around the edge of the scan glass are 4 Torx screws. Undo all four screws.

2) Carefully prise the control panel faceplate off. The buttons underneath are on a single panel. Slide this to the left and lift off.

3) Jiggle the lid of the scanner to get it off the main body of the printer.

4) Locate the scan engine motor (top right corner) and remove the two motor retaining screws (one on the left of the motor, the other on the right).

5) Lift out the entire mechanism (rod, drive belt, scan head) and turn over.

6) Thoroughly clean all glass and mirrored areas of the scan head. Also clean the scan lamp on the top of the scan head. Clean the tray inside the scanner (where the scan head travels back and forth). Also clean the inside and outside of the scanner glass pane itself.

7) Refit all parts, using the technique described above, in reverse order.

8) Switch on printer. It should now work OK.

Hope this helps, guys.

I see lots of these and other similar hp printers/ scanners/copiers every day.
Open as above and throw it away ...

This is caused by a bad powersupply 99% of the time. I fixed more than I can remember.

Most of the time it is uneconomical to repair.

I have two of these printers, one working 100% and the other with this scanner error. If I replace the main board in the faulty unit, all works. It is definately the main board that is faulty. I have also heard that this seems to be a common problem and sometimes intermittent which is definately caused by this board. My question: - is there a component on this board that can be replaced?

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by megacomus (4/19/07 2:39 PM) reply + / -
I have a 6110 that was making the grinding noise and giving the scanner error message. I fixed this one by finding what appears to be the scanner shipping lock under a black cover (one screw) on the left side of the scanner assembly and sliding the locking mech back into run position.

Now if I could just find the flimsy black clips that keep the top half from completely opening when one changes cartridges. HP does seem to want this model to go away as these clips aren't even listed on partsurfer.

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by yeahimsteve (5/30/07 1:28 AM) reply + / -
I too just fixed this exact same problem, but the original cleaning didn't fix the problem. The reason? I cleaned everything EXCEPT the part that was causing the problem. What part was causing the problem? The mirrors on the bottom side of the scanning device. There are two mirrors. One is flat across the bottom, and the other is tilted at an angle right next to the other mirror. Both of these mirrors need to be cleaned, as they were visibly dirty. This alone fixes the problem!!

I have been having this issue for a while and I just can't seem to get it fixed. After reading through all these posts I would like to know where the heck HP stands on this and why the heck are they not fixing this for free or at least replacing the unit with one that actually works. I rarely use this printer and there is no reason for something like this to happen. What ever happend to the quality products HP used to sell. This is such a disappointment. Maybe next time I will take my chances with an off brand printer and save myself a lot of time and money.

Re: Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by bfblack (6/21/07 1:45 PM) reply + / -
Your instructions were very thorough and helpful.

With step 3, I would suggest adding that there are two tabs on the front of the lid assembly. The tabs are attached to a release mechanism; pull the tabs up and toward you when facing the front of the unit.

The other suggestion is for step 4; it is not necessary to remove the T9 Torx screw associated with the scan motor. The two screws are both T10.

I have the same problem (scanner bar does not know when to stop going to thr right when turning the printer on, and it starts making grinding noises). I took it all apart and cleaned the mirrors on the bottom of the scanner bar, but it did not help. does anyone have any other suggestions? Has anyone figured out how the printer is supposed to sense when to stop the scanner bar? It must be related to the mirrors as I see no mechanical switch or sensor. We did not use the printer for a couple months ans=d then when I moved it and plugged it in I am now getting th scan error when turning it on.

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by Anonymous (7/21/07 7:54 PM) reply + / -
thank you. The steps worked. My printer is an older 6110, bought new about 6 yrs ago or so. Could not get the lid all the way off. Had to reach my hand into tight spot to remove scanner to clean mirrors. I did not remove motor.

Can you believe that today 9/25/07 I finally came across this thread after 3 years of frustration of not having my HP 6110 work? Just too damm busy in this crazy world and a laymen in the computer world. It is depressing to have a product go bad right after a few months of use, and then to have horrible service from HP techs who have the gaul to recommend we spend more money on HP products (pure greed), and finally to have no decency to say hey, we have enough defective printers, let's call them back or extend their warranties, which we pay for anyways. Thumbs down to HP but a thousand thumbs up to all of you in this thread, except the HP guy!

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by aslasdwe (10/9/07 11:06 AM) reply + / -
I have had the "scanner clicking" issue for sometime I talked to HP and this is what they told me:

1. Unplug the power supply from the wall outlet.
2. Unplug the power supply from the back of the printer.
3. Wait at least 20 seconds, then plug in the supply back into the wall outlet.
4. Plug in the power supply back into the printer.
5. Press the power button to turn the printer on

I followed the steps (skeptically) and it worked.

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by teamaquaman (10/16/07 7:02 AM) reply + / -
I too was skeptical about the glass cleaning. The scanner issue had been off and on for the last 8 mo. or so, and was getting worse by the event. Turning off and on usually worked after a while. This time, it wasn't working and I was fed up with it. I tried cleaning the glass from the inside, mailnly by the scanner head, and it worked. When removing the four screws and pulling off the keyboard face plate, you'll find tabs on the outer part of the glass lid facing towards you. Pull these tabs towards you and upward to disengage them. Once lifted, pull the entire glass & scanner lid upward. Do not attempt to lift as if there were hinges in the back. You should be able to turn the whole thing upside down to thoroughly clean the glass. Good Luck!!

I was able to fix our small office's 6110 using the instructions from morganp104 and bfblack. Thank you so much! I am the office hero!

Re: Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by Anonymous (10/25/07 8:20 PM) reply + / -
Morganp104 - Thank you your instructions - they totally worked. Just one small addition - when lifting the lid off in #3 - there are two tabs in the front which need to be pulled toward you to release.

Also, I cleaned the glass with blue window cleaner and it worked great.

Thanks again !!!

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by LT (12/2/07 9:16 PM) reply + / -
We have had this prob for a while and I noticed it was heat sensitive. If the unit was turned off and then back on without cooling down, the prob would show, but if left off for an hour or so, all was well. Until we got to summer that is, then the issue was permanent.

Anyway, cleaning the glass both sides didn't help, so I also cleaned the mirrors under the scan head, as well as the small area of glass on the main scan window that normally rests up against the white strip under the plastic glass surround. One of these two things fixed the prob it seems.

HP need a swift kick up the butt for their attitude one this issue, but seems even the best manufacturers are taking this stance with products, we had an issue with a 1 year old kyocera printer and they told us we should just buy a new one.

Seems electronics companies really don't care about all this electronic gear going to landfill, so long as they keep selling equipment...

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by Bert (12/2/07 10:14 PM) reply + / -
Your closing statement LT, unfortunately, is probably correct or HP thinks that the general public is a bunch of bozos and can't follow simple maintenance instructions. Scads of people that visit this forum have proven them wrong if we're basically considered to be bozos.

A good example of HP's cynicism or dishonesty is illustrated on one of their web pages that actually tells you how to remove the scanner glass of some models. I quote "This document shows how to clean the scanner glass internal surface of some HP All-in-One products. A dirty or blurry scanner glass may cause a deficient scanning and copy quality." It has been amply proven by posts on this forum that copy quality it not the major problem caused by a dirty scanner glass, but rather scanner failure. Their web page also says that following their own procedure will void the warranty and to avoid doing anything other than cleaning the glass. Tell me HP, what has the user got to lose by fiddling with other scanner parts if it isn't working and taking it apart voids the warranty anyway?
http://h10025.www1.hp.com

Now I can relax and solve some geopolitical problems.

Re: HP Officejet 6110 scan error by sabres (2/29/08 11:18 AM) reply + / -
There are actually 4 mirrors and a receiving lens inside the scan assembly. I found that my lens was filthy. You can remove the black cover of the scan assembly by inserting a small screwdriver through the 2 square holes in the top of the assembly, then clean the lens with a swab soaked in glass cleaner. Good luck!

My 6110xi prints great, copies great and faxes great. What it wont do is send scanned images to my computer. I keep getting an error. I tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling it but nothing seems to help. The only thing it wont do is scan to my computer. The scanner itself is working fine making copies and what not. I just don't know what to do.

Download and run the software cleanup utility and then reinstall the driver software.

I followed all the cleaning procedures.. Every reflective service, flipped over the scanner assembly.. Cleaned the glass.. I even cleaned the CCFL lookin thing.. Finally replaced the scanner, and all works fine..

Good Luck if you bought an HP.. Next time I'll stick to Epson.

Well, I guess I am not alone... Isn't there like a DIP switch setting or a key combo(like some copiers have a CROP code...Hold Copy, Repeat, Override(single sheet feed), and Print all at the same time to get to hidden menus.) Just need some way to disable the POST. I use it primarily as a printer anyhow.

All the cleaning and oiling of this does not help.

Does anyone actually know how the head determines home position and exactly what to do to repair this?

This is my 3rd time cleaning under the glass. I have never had a problem in the past. This time around, I now have a "cover open- close document feeder cover". Does anyone know what this means and what I possibly did wrong in putting it back together? I have disassembled it and put it back together, but the same response. I have had this scanner/ printer/ fax for 6 years- I can't seem to part w/ it yet, despite the dirty glass every 2 years.
