A G85 success story, thanks Bert et al by Ray (11/23/04 2:53 PM) reply+2 + / -
Recently a friend asked me to repair an HP G85 unit that he had bought off ebay. Thanks to an epic G85 thread posted here several months ago that contains about everything you would ever want to know about G85s, I was able to make the repair. The top rail guide on the carriage had gotten broken off in shipping. I bought a junker HP940c from ebay and used it for parts to repair the G85. I was so impressed with the G85 that I have bought one for myself.

A big thank you for Burt for the info and to Moe for providing the site.

Bert, sorry, I mis-spelled your name.

I have one for my own use that I couldn't talk a customer into having repaired. Their loss! The newest models don't seem as solid.

maybe you can help me!! Mine quit print yellow so all my colors look weird. I can't seem to get the new cartridge to "align". It keeps telling me to align it, but they won't. Help??

Can the printer print yellow and black? These two colors are essential for alignment to work. If these two colors print, the lens may be missing from the spot sensor. The spot sensor is on the right side of the carriage under the bulging cover held on by one T10 Torx head screw. Check the sensor for a clear rectangular lens on the lower edge. If it is missing you will have to replace the whole sensor. The original part is no longer available, but the one used on the Deskjet 1220 will probably work, P/N C2693-67037.

Tip: If the spot sensor is broken, it was probably caused by removing paper jams through the front. Always remove paper jams through the rear access door.

Hi, I have an HP G85 printer. It is saying the printer cartidges need to checked or replaced each time it is turned on and sometimes while waiting for a job. Does anyone have advice on troubleshooting this problem to something repairable/replaceable? The partsurfer site does not have any circuit boards with a name to suggest it does the cartidge test. Thanks for your help.

Lots of advice in the forums.

The DeskJet 970CXI posts apply to the G55 and G85 also.

The troubleshooting steps are:

Clean/inspect carriage contacts

Replace cartridge(s)

Replace carriage board

replace cariage cable

Do not tilt machine, ink will spill!!!

I have another success story to share. Just hope I'm putting it in the right place on this site. My G85 blew it's power supply a few weeks ago. Out of deserperation to get it up and runing, I went to Fry's eletronics and brought a aftermarket power supply that had the exact same specs as the hp power supply. Well, just so everyone knows, "Must Use The HP Power supply" My printer worked perfect for one week, then all of the sudden it freeked out!! It started doing all kinds of weard stuff like shutting down and powering up by itself, would stop in the middle of a copy job and just sit there and the led lights would flash back and forth untill I shut it down. I had a feeling that it might be this power supply thing, so I went to a printer repair shop, got the hp power supply for the g85, and now it's working just fine. Lession learned!! :)

Likely that the generic power supply is not filtered and produces noisy DC.

G85 Alignment message will not go away by ftmagellan (6/1/09 7:16 AM) reply + / -
Help! My printer is disabled and I am not sure what to do. I have had difficulty accessing information here on how to fix although it probably ahs already been posted.
The nessage is constantly to Align Print Cartidges. I have done this over and over and also have new cartidges in so I do not know what else to do. Guilty of clearing jams through the front so am concerned that I botched the printer alignment this way...???

Other problem is that I need to scan a document and cannot figure out how to do this because the printer keeps saying that I need to set Options. Where are the options and can I do this with bad alignment?

G85 success story but now prints soooo slow by johnmac (9/28/09 12:47 PM) reply + / -
I followed your instructions and rebuilt and cleaned the G85 I have that had scanner / copy failure issues complete with banners letting me know same. The scanner works great now but the printer is dreadfully slow. What can I do? I love the machine aside from the seemingly consistant challenges!

Thanks..

Hope someone can help-While changing my black cartridge the metal sensor behind it snapped off-looks like I need a new carriage-can someone give me the proceedure to get the old one out? Thanks.

Did you actually see a piece come off or suspect that one did? If you are referring to a spring loaded vertically mounted metallic piece, some printers that use the 45/78 cartridge set had the part behind only one cartridge. The possibility of one coming off without doing considerable damage to cartridge carriage is nil. If I am right about my identification of the "sensor" then I have addressed your question more times than I can count. The part is officially called a electrostatic discharge blade.

If you actually broke something the case will have to come off and the print mechanism will have to be partially disassembled. The carriage costs approximately $50. Repost for more info if actually need to replace the carriage.

G85 not printing in color by Garden Girl (1/12/10 2:53 PM) reply + / -
I put a brand new color ink cartridge in my printer and it's not printing in color--only black. Help?

Re: G85 not printing in color by moe (1/12/10 3:07 PM) reply + / -
Did you pull the tape off of the bottom of the cartridge? Was it printing color before you replaced it?
