Any suggestions on an Epson Stylus Color 1520 where the cover light just flashes even when the cover is closed.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Eddy (11/16/04 11:37 AM) reply + / -
What are the condition of the other LEDs?

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by tawny (11/16/04 11:59 AM) reply + / -
The are normal

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Eddy (11/16/04 12:16 PM) reply + / -
The error conditions that has the cover open LED flashing are maintenance request and fatal error. There is no error condition where the cover open LED is flashing, operate LED on and the rest of the LEDs are off.

If the cover open LED is on but not flashing then check the cover open switch for proper operation. The switch is normally closed, it is open when the lever is pushed.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Denny Conway (11/16/04 5:07 PM) reply+1 + / -
Tawny: EDDY is right. Here's what is listed in the actual "Users Manual", when only the COVER OPEN LIGHT is on, but that would indicatethat the light would be on SOLID, rather than actually FLASHING: "When the Cover Open light comes on, the printer's cover is open and printing is paused. Close the cover. If the Pause light is on, press the Pause button to turn it off and resume printing."...You may be able to get help directly from the "Epson Technical Support Department". At least that way you are dealing with a technician thats trained on your particular model, by Epson Company. To see available phone numbers for technical support, go on-line to Epson @ " www.epson.com ", or call the Epson Automated Support Locator @ 1-800-442-2110 [press 1, then 1 & following prompts]. If your printer is out of warranty, you will need a credit card, before the technicians can help you, because there is a charge for technical support over the phone. You can also e-mail the "Epson Technical Support Department", for possible free help or advice, at www.epson.com and then click-on "Proceed With E-Mail". They state on their web-site, that they "will respond via e-mail within 1 business day"...Good Luck! Denny Conway

You'll need to replace the ink cartridge while the printer is on. Follow the instructions in your User's Manual on how to replace an empty ink cartridge.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by newuser (4/23/05 1:52 PM) reply+1 + / -
If the cover open and pause leds blink together the printer is in a fatal error condition, turn off the printer and check lubrication of the carriage guide shaft. If the lubrication is ok you may have either a bad main board or a failing motor.

You can download a service manual for you printer in the reference section of this site, it contains several useful informations.

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by designertom (4/23/05 2:24 PM) reply + / -
2 1/2" on left side of page isn't printing. Any ideas?

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by newuser (4/23/05 2:44 PM) reply + / -
Put a blank sheet in the printer and turn it on while holding the load/eject button. The printer will print a self-test page, if the left side is ok the problem is in the driver or in application settings otherwise you are experiencing an hardware failure (defective home position sensor or carriage problems due to insufficient lubrication)

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by designertom (4/25/05 8:25 AM) reply + / -
The Test sheet ran fine. But when I go to plot, the preview indicates a printable area of 13.5" x 21.75" instead of 16.5" x 21.75"

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (5/9/05 7:48 AM) reply + / -
That is the printable area of a 1520. Although it accepts paper 17 inches wide, the widest printable area is 13.6 inches.

I have an Epson 1520 that was put into this same error condition by the heads hitting an obstruction. The obstruction has been cleared.

I've tried powering everything off and leaving it unplugged all night. I've tried releasing the head and moving it to the far left and then turning it on (as per a suggestion on resetting a similar condition in a 1280). Nothing seems to make a difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Denny Conway (5/10/05 11:38 AM) reply + / -
Alien: As you did not tell us the actual light pattern that is showing up on your "1520", I'm assuming that you are speaking of the Fatal Error" service condition, thats mentioned earlier on this message board. The most common problem involves a DIRTY and or DRY Carriage Assembly, so you should at least clean & lubricate that assembly, just to eliminate that possibility. Its of course also possible that you could even have an actual hardware/parts failure, such as a failing Carriage Motor, or even a failing Main Board, but no way to really know. To eliminate that dirty and or dry carriage assy problem, try wiping off all around the round metal carriage bar or shaft [that the print cartridge holder assembly moves back-n-forth on], with a lint free cloth. Also clean the outside of the metal bushings with q-tips, that the carriage bar passes thru, on both sides of the print cartridge holder assembly. You can also use alcohol on the cloth, if there is a lot of build-up on the carriage shaft/bar. Then lube the metal bar on both sides of the holder assembly, slightly with a precision oiler, not a spray lubrication, or the appropriate grease thats used on some of the newer models [Epson C40UX, C42UX, C44UX, C62]. A drop or two of a Teflon based lubrication or Tri-Flo lube is best on the older models of most printers. Manually slide the holder assembly back and forth to spread out the lubrication and wipe of any excess lube or blackish build-up that appears on the bar. After the carriage assembly is cleaned & lubed, then you should perform the "Printhead Alignment Procedure" thru the PRINTER PROPERTIES UTILITY thats loaded onto your Computer System. That alignment can be thrown off because of a dirty and or dry carriage assembly. Sometimes people will simply do a re-alignment without cleaning & lubing that assembly. That simply does a quick fix that usually does not last long. Once that assembly is cleaned & lubed, the actual alignment is then usually off, from those previously done re-alignments and or the sticking & binding caused from when that assembly was dirty and or dry. You can check out this link, supplied by WES, to see different lubrications: http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/oil.html and also this link provided by WES, http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/glide.html , to see some general information on "Carriage Guide Shaft Maintenance"...Just to let you know: There is a free download of an "Epson Stylus Color 1520 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson . That manual may be of some help as reference in troubleshooting, servicing or disassembly, while trying to correct your printers problem...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (5/10/05 12:15 PM) reply + / -
The problem is that the error condition is not resetting.

I had previously cleaned and relubed. Sewing machine oil in the steel shaft, white lithium grease on the slide surface. The problem is that the print head encountered an obstacle that has since been removed. But the biggest obstacle is that this is a printer I refurbed and sold. I can't tell for sure which LEDs are solid and which are blinking as he keeps changing what he is saying but won't say if that is because they -are- changing, or if the inaccurately reported originally.

I also get the distinct impression he is not following my instructions to the letter. So in the end I guess I need to get it back to me so I can give it proper troubleshooting. Very frustrating.

Thanks for the help!

Hey People! Can anyone tell me why sometimes my printer prints out page after page of nonsense? Is that a HexDump? What is it and why does it happen? How can I stop it before it uses up all the paper? Thank you for your help!

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by newuser (5/13/05 12:26 PM) reply + / -
Hex dump function can be stopped turning off and then on the printer howevere it should print data with a precise format like the following:

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

If you don't see a similar output there is probably something sending garbage to the printer. Usually turning the printer off and deleting all print jobs solves the problem but if spooler service doesn't respond anymore you may be forced to reboot windows.

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Anonymous (5/13/05 12:56 PM) reply + / -
Thank you for he quick response. I also got a response from Epson.com and they gave me instructions to change the port or driver from the control panel and that seems to have worked. The giberish was no0thing like what you showed me. But the problem now seems to be fixed. Thanks!

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (5/13/05 3:07 PM) reply + / -
Hmm... tried to respond, it never showed up.

Bad connection through the printer cable is often a cause of this. The printer loses a few bytes and starts printing everything as if it were just text.

Take the parallel cable off and back on again. This is usually sufficient to self-clean the connections. If it acts up again, your cable may have gone bad. Ironically it seems like more expensive parallel cables go bad faster, probably due to thinner more flexible insulation allowing the wires to flex more than cheaper, heavier cables.

My printer has just stopped putting ink on the page. I have replaced both cartridges, run through the cleaning processes about 15 times, I have no incorrect lights on the panel - just no ink! When you print something it goes through all the correct motions - the thing shoots back and forth in all the right places ...... and the page comes out blank!!!!! any suggestions would be very welcome.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Anonymous (7/15/05 6:31 AM) reply + / -
To Janetkilleen.

Should be the service station (the purge unit) that is obstructed with tick ink.

Check this unit and the waste ink pads they are placed at the right side of the printer, under the printhead.

You can clean the purge unit and replace the pads, or better, replace both things.

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Anonymous (8/29/05 7:42 PM) reply + / -
I have severely clogged nozzels too. 10 purges doesn't clean them out. Where can I obtain a purge unit and pads. Got a Part No?

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Wes (8/29/05 11:53 PM) reply + / -
You can check with compassmicro they have a parts list that you can download. Get the part numbers then just email them for price. But their site is painfully slow so once you enter compassmicro.com in your browser expect a long wait for the page to load.

If you need a cleaning kit you can get one here http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson/K70

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Whenever I try to print to the 1520, the paper tray goes through its little dance, then feeds a sheet of paper into the printing carriage. But the paper is sent all the way through without printing. Then, the "paper out" light comes on (this, though the paper tray is full of paper, and I've tried rejigging the stack of paper, using more paper, using less paper, all to no avail). After all this, the green "operate" light flashes, and the amber "reset" light stays on.

Does anyone know -- is this fixable, or should I put the Epson out by the curb? Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by SeanY (9/14/05 8:22 AM) reply + / -
It's probable that the paper feed rollers are slipping just a bit.
Over time the rollers lose their ability to "grab" the paper and send it up to the platen.
This small amount of slipping will cause the paper to not hit the sensor at the right time thus causing paper out error.
If you can find someone to replace the rollers or do it yourself, then it's worth it.
Otherwise, there is a manual feed in the back (not the tractor feed)
which you can use that is separate from the front feed.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (9/14/05 9:42 AM) reply + / -
You can clean the rollers. I thought I had this info up on my site, but missed adding it, so here it is.

First let me say a few caveats:

DON'T USE PAPER TOWELS. They come apart and leave little bits all over everything. Don't use ArmourAll, Don't use WD-40 anywhere in the printer.

Often it's just paper dust that has built up on the offset paper feed rollers.

I found some premoistened Window Wipes made by a company called Coral that are the most lint free wipe I've seen. I use those to clean the rollers. Without any paper in the tray, set a corner of one wipe under the right feed roller. Hit the Form Feed button and HANG ON TO THAT WIPE. Don't let it get sucked in. Since it's wet, it won't pull really hard but do hang on. It'll try a couple of times, thereby wiping the roller. Repeat, using each corner of the wipe.

Get a fresh wipe and do the same on the other roller.

If the offset feed rollers have hardened, you may wish to put some Rubber Renew on them. I think they sell it from this site, or you might check your local electronics stores that supply TV shops, it might be called Belt Cleaner. Don't bother asking at Radio Shack or other retail outlet.

To apply it, first set a sheet of cardboard in the paper tray so you don't get it on the cork pads. Then leave several of the window wipes out to dry. Put a little on a corner of a dry wipe, put it under a roller, and hit the Form Feed button. Again, hang onto that wipe, don't let it get pulled in. Once is enough, then turn the wipe to a clean corner and Form Feed again, again with a clean corner. You don't want to leave any Rubber Renew on the rollers as it'll keep softening them if you do. Repeat for the other offset feed roller.

I find I rarely have to use Rubber Renew. Normally just cleaning with the premoistened window wipe is enough.

Not all window wipes are the same. Some have horrible fuzzy wipes in them, some have wierd lemon scents added. Tear one in half, if it looks like a cotton ball exploded then don't use them. The ones I use when torn just tear along an uneven edge with only a few threads sticking out.

Those red cotton auto rags may work, if you wash them several times first in hot water to get rid of most of the loose lint and dyes. Do NOT use any you've already used on your car! It is impossible to get out all the oil and grease.

Hello,
I have an Epson 1520 that I print 13.5 x 21.5 on watercolor paper. Problem is it leaves black spots on the print in random location. I have cleaned out the extra ink area buy unplugging the printer in mid-stride and allowing me access to this area it was pretty gunky. My printer is probably 8 – 10 years old. I also cleaned everywhere else I could see. Plugged it back in let it run through its cycle and did a nozzle check and it worked well for awile. It is frustrating to print a large print and wait 25 mins only to find spots on it.
Is there away to tear this thing apart and clean under the print carriage? I am handy with tools and have fixed many VCR’s, TV’s and other electronics.
Any help would be great, I would like to buy a 7600 but not enough cash right now and I would love to get some mileage out of my 1520.
Thanks in advance,

Absolutely do -not- remove the heads.

I've found that unless you've accidentally dumped a few ounces of ink into the mech, it is sufficient access without removing anything.

Read my message above yours and see my link about what to use to clean. Basically Windex with Ammonia or the mixture I describe will dissolve ink like hot water cuts through sugar. Water alone won't do it, alcohol won't do it.

These printers are real workhorses. I've rescued quite a few that were being tossed, where the only real problem I found was the inevitable build-up of paperdust/ink mud. It gets on the bottom of the head, too, again, see the link I gave in previous messages in this thread.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Anonymous (9/19/05 3:33 PM) reply + / -
Many times paper debris builds up on the underside of the printheads. Turn the printer on. When it starts to move the carriage UNPLUG it. Tear\cut some paper towels into strips about 2 inches wide. Fold them in half lengthwise. Raise the carriage to the "envelope" position. Lay the folded paper towel in the track below the printhead and gently guide the printhead over about half of the paper. Put some water on both sides of the protruding paper towel and carefully pull the paper towel back and forth. Do this a few times to remove the "tags" hanging off the printheads. repeat the process as necessary.
Hope this helps.

DON'T USE PAPER TOWELS. They come apart and leave little bits all over everything.

http://www.polyphoto.com/tutorials/PrintHeadCleaning/

If you remove the heads, it requires a DOS utility to reset everything. It's a bit involved and you don't really need to remove the heads to clean things.

Hello,
Here is a question that might be common sense. I print my photos from photoshop saved as an RGB. The blacks come out greenish because the black is a combo of RGB mixed. Should I convert my photos to CYMK?

My Question Is:

Do CYMK files print using both cartridges black and color? Or will a CYMK be printed with the color cartridge only?

One more question: I followed the cleaning tips with windex wipes and it worked great for a while. I print out the color confirmation bars and one 1/8" section is missing on the blue. I have done numerous cleaning cycles with confirmation every 3 cleanings and it is still clogged, sam tiny row of blue. (went through a whole cartridge of cleaning)

Thanks for being here!

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (1/25/06 7:02 AM) reply + / -
No, don't convert to CMYK. All desktop printer drivers print only from RGB files. If you print from a CMYK file, it gets converted back to RGB and you lose some of your color space in the process.

The printer uses a mix of CMY for lighter shades of grey. This is to avoid the look of widely separated black dots. But it's a touchy thing, as you see if it isn't exactly correct then the grey and not quite black areas can have a color shift. This is why for purely black and white photo printing, people use special inks where all four are shades of grey.

You may have the wrong paper type selected. Or be using a non-Epson paper. Different dyes may sink into the paper differentially. I had this problem when printing on Office Depot glossy paper. When the driver was set to what I thought was the closest, Epson Glossy Photo, everything came out with a green tint in the dark areas. But when I set the driver to Epson Premium Glossy Photo, it was just right!

For the cleaning- which cleaning instructions did you follow? Have you tried putting a few drops of cleaning solution (my mix) on the park pad and letting it sit a day? Patience is a virtue.

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (1/25/06 7:08 AM) reply + / -
Are they very regular? That's not a good sign. It's known as "stuck nozzles".

Without seeing it, it is also possible it's a bit of hair or gunk on the bottom of the print head. It is possible to clean this (carefully) and you do -not- want to remove the print head to do this.

http://www.polyphoto.com/tutorials/PrintHeadCleaning/

If it continues, it is almost certainly stuck nozzles and the only fix is to replace the black print head. I doubt you will be able to do it yourself. Although the physical act of replacement is relatively simple, one screw and a fragile ribbon cable, actually aligning and changing the voltage drive settings for the new head require a computer that can boot in to MSDOS (Windows 98 or earlier), a special bit of software that Epson doesn't pass out, and a lot of patience and time. Better to find a tech that can do it.

AlienSteve, you the MAN!! Your glass-wipe-roller-recondition thingy worked great on my 1520. It's the first time it has fed paper right in about a year. I thought I just had to suffer with hand-feeding it all the time. Thank you! Thank you! I'm not worthy!

Re: Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (1/26/06 3:59 PM) reply + / -
Aw, shucks.

I tend to throw myself into learning things. I either bought (thrift store) or was given a -lot- of old Epson and Canon printers which I then used to learn all I could about them. There are a -lot- of misconceptions out there, especially about how a proper continuous ink feed system should work.

My first Epson was a 1520 that had been sitting outside at a St Vincent dePaul without cartridges for who knows how long. I used a lot of patience, as they were going -used- on eBay for $250 and up. I had it printing perfectly in a couple of weeks and used it for a year with pigment inks for regular printing, outdoor signs, Tshirts, direct fabric printing, etc. with a CIS I built for it. But I'm too much of a collector! Now I have 3 Epson 3000s, a 5000, another 1520 (sold the first), 1280, 820, 800, 600, R200, etc. and a stack of Canon BJC 6000s, 5100s, and an s9000. The only ones I bought new were one of the Canon BJC 6000s and the Epson R200.

Steve,
Sounds like bad news. I'll spend some time trying a thorough but gentle clean.
If I need to change the head, I'll look at prices for the parts, but no point if I can't get the software to do it. No problem finding a PC with DOS, but I'll need some instructions.
I'll let you know how the cleaning goes.

To "newuser" and/or others..
I had the problem of both cover open and pause lights blinking
in unison. I found a plastic "tab"? (on the lower forward edge)blocking the ink cartridge carriage from moving to the left.
I simply pushed/rotated ? it away(forward) and the carriage then slid to the left. The printer now works normally.
Hope this resolves someones similar problems.........

MY Epson 1520 black ink out light is on and it will not turn off after I put a new cartage in it. Can anyone help me get it to turn off?

Hi,
I had the blinking 'cover open' light & unable to turn off via on off. I unplugged and it stopped. Next print I heard a scratchy/sweeping sound and got a 1" swath of very light black lines about 1/16" apart along top and bottom of image. If I change the image size they are still at the top and bottom of image.

I've cleaned the heads and the roller with the windex wipes as suggested above. Still there. They come off if scrape off the powder coating with an Xacto but this isn't very professional.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your asistance.

I tried un-pluging the printer, didn't help!

What now?

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by mcprinter (8/19/07 1:46 AM) reply + / -
Your waste ink is full.
Every time you print or clean, the printer counts how much ink has gone to the waste ink pads.

To reset the waste ink count:
Turn on the printer holding Alt, LF/FF, Load/Eject and Micro Adjust.

You should ideally replace the waste ink pads inside the printer.

Hi mcprinter,

Thanks very much for your response.

How do I replace the waste ink pads inside the printer? Is this something I can do myself or send it in?

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by mcprinter (8/19/07 2:21 PM) reply + / -
They are quite easy to replace I think. It's a few years since I last did it.

There is a free service manual on the link below, so you can decide if you want to attempt it.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Scottyjr (8/23/07 5:24 AM) reply + / -
The most difficult part of this job will probably be in getting the cover off; there's a hidden screw and two tabs to be released. After that the pads are plainly visible and accessible. Just take care for the wires of the cover open switch and the home position sensor when removing the pads on the right. - Scotty

Can anyone tell me where I can find the DOS utility for aligning the printheads on a 1520? I have one that, even after a thorough cleaning, is spotty. I've used the PH cleaning solution, thoroughly de-gunked the underneath, & replaced the wiper & pump cap assy (last 2 were beyond cleaning off). I figure it's due for a new black PH next.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by mcprinter (10/10/07 11:23 AM) reply + / -
It's been a while but as I remember....
The dos alignment utility is for the head tilt and the height of the black printhead to the colour one.

Printing a thin black line and using another piece of paper over the top as a straight edge will check the tilt.
Repeat for colour head.
You may want to print a box to check that the paper isn't skewed.

Print a thin black line with a colour one next to it will check the head height.

I have successfully used this method on the Stylus 3000 - Same heads.

Unless you mean left to right alignment, which is done through the windows driver.

Power up holding the feed button and you should get a nozzle check.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by surfertech (10/10/07 11:46 AM) reply + / -
Hmmmm, OK, thanks for the info. I possibly mis-stated what I was needing. There is a DOS utility to use when replacing the printhead. It sets the voltages & other physical setup aspects of the new head. I've been told by an Epson parts supplier that the new head might not function properly (& might even be damaged) if these voltages aren't set properly.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by printerrepairpros (10/10/07 9:56 PM) reply + / -
The printer will work, although not optimally, without inputing the the head voltage. The printer will not be damaged if the voltage is not correct.

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Scottyjr (10/14/07 5:03 AM) reply + / -
I have played around with the voltages in attempts to drive an erratic printhead (spotty nozzle checks) to perform well. I could not discern any changes in printing when the voltages were changed. What is the purpose these voltages have? What would the effect be if a printhead was changed from incorrect voltages to correct voltages? - Scotty

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (10/14/07 9:21 AM) reply + / -
Sigh... that's like changing your carburator settings because your car isn't shifting well!

Your head is almost certainly clogged or dirty. All that adjusting the voltages do is change the drop size. I hope you wrote down what the voltages were before, because you need to change them back.

The purpose of the adjustable voltages: each head as manufactured is not 100% identical, so it may take a very slightly different drive voltage to make them fire the exact same size droplet. A nozzle check may look just fine, but if you print a full band of color, you'd see subtle banding.

This is why that is not user adjustable.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Scottyjr (10/23/07 5:10 AM) reply + / -
Thanks for the reply and information. I recently replaced a color head on a 1520, ran the program, and compared photos printed before and after running the program. There was an obvious difference.

I run the program on some old laptop with Win98 on it. I have to run the program about 10 times before the voltages are displayed. Then when I change a voltage, the program responds and displays a voltage with numbers way off of what I had input. However, after exiting and restarting the program and then request the stored voltage data, I find that the voltage I had entered did take and is now stored.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (10/24/07 9:54 AM) reply + / -
I wonder if the strange behavior has anything to do with the laptop. Older laptops seemed to have strange behaviours with some software, because of non-standard hardware.

Thank you for letting us know how it turned out! So many find the answer but never let anyone else know.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by mcprinter (11/15/07 12:51 PM) reply + / -
You possibly need to reset the waste ink counter.
Ideally you should also replace the waste ink pads or the waste ink may spill out of the printer.

Either search on here for 1520 or I think that the reset is in the free service manual
http://www.eserviceinfo.com/

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Kusakun (edited 11/16/07 3:55 AM) reply + / -
Does it need cleaning and maintenance and thats all? Or it is more complicated?

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (11/16/07 8:05 AM) reply + / -
After a certain number of cleaning cycles, the printer electronics decide that the waste ink pad is in danger of overflowing. It is very conservative, so your waste ink pad may or may not be close to full. The printer will not print when it decides it's time.

It's kind of a big felt pad that fits inside the printer underneath everything. Eventually it will get saturated with ink. I see lots of people resetting the waste ink counter and not replacing the pad, and continuing to print just fine. However, I'd suggest if you go this route, put the printer into some kind of tray with a towel in it just in case.

The printer does not check the pad itself, it is only guessing.

When I start the printer the Operate green light is solid ON, the Pause yellow light is solid ON and the Paper Out red light BLINKS.

So, I try to insert a paper through the manual feed in the back (not the tractor feed)and the Operate remains solid green, the Pause yellow light starts to BLINK and the Paper Out red light keeps BLINKING.

The paper is not fed.

What would be going on?

Thank you very much,

Hugo

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Anonymous (3/5/08 4:25 AM) reply + / -
When you tried to feed the paper from the rear, did you depress the pause button on the control panel? - Scotty

Re: Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (3/5/08 9:41 AM) reply + / -
Printing a page of text very slowly sounds like perhaps the settings in your printer driver got changed to photo settings.

Plain text only requires about 360dpi, but the 1520 can be set up to 1440dpi (actually 1440x720dpi).

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by patagonian07 (3/5/08 12:15 PM) reply + / -
I’m affraid I have not explained the problem accurately.

The printer behaves randomly between normal and abnormal status.

NORMAL OPERATION: On power-on the printer, the paper feed roller turns one time plus around 120 sexagesimal degrees. Then the green OPERATE light remains solid ON.

On feeding one sheet of paper through the manual feed in the back (not the tractor feed) the paper feed mechanism picks the paper and the printer is ready to print.

ABNORMAL OPERATION: On power-on the printer, the paper roller turns five times plus aronud 310 sexagesimal degrees. Then the green OPERATE light remains solid ON, the PAUSE yellow light starts solid ON and the PAPER OUT red light starts to BLINK.

On trying to feed one sheet of paper through the manual feed in the back the PAUSE yellow light turns BLINKING and the PAPER OUT red light keeps blinking. The OPERATE green light keeps solid ON.

In this abnormal operation status the paper feed mechanism do not pick the paper.

When trying to change the PAUSE status by depressing the pause button that command did not notice my action and the yellow light keeps solid on. In fact, the printer seems to stay irresponsive.

Sometimes the printer is working fine in the NORMAL OPERATION only to suddenly shift to the ABNORMAL status.

So, by repetitively turning the printer on and off eventually it reverts to NORMAL only to fall in ABNORMAL after few printed sheets.

Have someone stumbled with this problem? Would it be a solution?

Thank you very much,

Hugo

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Anonymous (3/6/08 5:04 AM) reply + / -
Hugo,
A possibility for the cause of the problem might be the switch that is activated or deactivated when the selection between tractor and tray feed is made by the lever at the external printer knob. I would try toggling that lever between the two positions several times and see if it has any effect on you problem. - Scotty

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by AlienSteve (4/11/08 9:29 AM) reply + / -
That sounds like the waste ink pad full problem. There is a large felt-like pad in the bottom of the printer, that is where ink from cleanings ends up.

However, it doesn't check the pad, it just counts the number of cleanings and after a certain count is reached, stops printing and gives you the error. Many users have simply reset the printer without replacing or cleaning the waste ink pad.

Here is a page with instructions on resetting the waste ink counter:

http://www.ezciss.com/waste.html

You may have to do this a number of times before it takes.

You may also download the SSC Epson Service Utility program and reset the waste ink counter from software. It doesn't always work after the printer has reached the point of flashing lights.

According to the Service Manual (and perhaps the User's Manual), all lights flashing indicates waste pads full. The Reset light and Cover Open light flashing indicate a jam of some kind; the printer is trying to make a movement but can't and stops operation and flashes the two lights.

Oburn, when does this happen? One common cause is that components in the ink pump area become misset and the printer cannot finish it's initialization. To reset the components, with the printer unplugged, try to slide (do not force) the printhead carriage to around the center of the printer. Then plug in the printer and turn it on. The printer should then completely go through it's initialization.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Anonymous (4/14/08 4:39 AM) reply + / -
Oburn,
When you say 'source' do you mean the power supply? The flashing light symptoms you describe is termed a 'fatal error' by Epson. This term is pretty broad and a multitude of malfunctions could cause this indication of the two flashing lights. If it's electronic then I'd say your out of luck and you would not be able to repair the printer on your own and it would require the services of an autorized repair facility. That would most likely be a costly repair that would be more than the printer is worth. However, if the problem is mechanical then there is still hope. When you tried the reset procedure that I described above, did the printer make any grinding like noises? - Scotty

My Epson 1520 has been a good workhorse for quite a while.

I have been using it with my desktop and laptop computers and it responds faithfully.

I recently bought a new laptop with windows vista. I bought a USB to 25 db plug interconnector because my new HP laptop doesn't have a 25 pin/lpt1 port. My 1520 doesn't work with this arrangement. I get an error sign in my printer status window.

Is this software or hardware? Is there an answer?

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by printerrepairpros (6/21/08 11:19 AM) reply + / -
If the color is printing properly, there are 3 possible reasons for the failure. Defective printhead, defective or inproperly seated data cable, and defective main board. I would check the data cable first. If it is properly connected, the printhead is most likely the culprit.
Hope this helps.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 1520 by Anonymous (6/22/08 7:40 AM) reply + / -
Tommy, printerrepairpros is right on target. Each of the three fixes is very invasive and, if done by a shop, pretty expensive. Sorry, but I think it's that or a new printer. I'm not sure if there are any new 1520s even available. The 3000, which is a 1520 with bulk ink and a wider format, may be. I know sigmo, who posts here, refurbishes them and offers a warranty; I think they are somewhere between $600-$800. The 3000 is a monster printer and takes up alot of space. What were you using the 1520 for? - Scotty

um - having trouble with blocked nozzle
tried some of the cleaning techniques and fretted over this for a month or rwo now

have suddenly realised that i am stuck here in mundungoland because the epson printer does not do

am suspecting that this and many other sites especially those offering windex and other solutions are probably being run by epson engineers laughing themselves sick as we struggle to find the cure

what are we rrying to do - start some kind of business
we have our little ideas and designs and want to try them out - start small and see how it goes

so we look for a printer that will help us along until we get to big time production and can afford to screenprint out thousands

because we have so many designs and printer companyies ask us to order 100's and thousands and we would if we had the storage/cash flow

but here we are still trying to build up a small business from scratch - a little bit cash and we go buy a printer

and so the epson - is great except you have to stand over it every step of the way because half way through the print it makes a stain or nozzle blocks or it catches 2 bits of paper or simply doesn't load - you've read the site

the nozzle block - and it is just past warrenty - cheaper to buy new

nothing to do with inks - was once epson careful - but my reward?? the nozzle block

epson said it was because the paper wasn't espon paper/too thick

i said but i want to print cards - they tell you how to make cards but turns out the card they mean is just heavy paper - writing on the back of which shows right through to the design on the front - not really something you could sell as a starting/test product

and instead of paying to get it fixed you throw it away and buy a new printer which someone swears you can print on heavy card - heck it is supposed to print on cds - see epson says that the print head is so fine that is the paper is not cut properly just passing over the edge - even if you do not print to the edge - just messes the head - so what about those paper snatches that print on through scrunched up paper because it has not fed in properly, despite separating every sheet, fanning it and whatnot

not to mention finding out that the new printer cartrdges only hold enough ink for a few prints before needing a change

epson - o why o why o why did i ever believe that you were on my side

Assuming your responding to a post of mine BigGinge, thanks for the reply. Approved by professionals or not, I've adopted my own remedy for the rubber infeed rubbers and platen on the Epson 1520s (and occassionally a 3000) that I work on. I use coarse sandpaper glue to a wide craft stick to roughen up the soft infeed rollers. I try to work diagonally accross the rollers. That done, I use a solvent called Goof Off (available in the paint department at local home centers) and wipe the infeed rollers and clean the platen. This greatly improves the ability of the printer to pickup and feed media. Long term? Just don't know. - Scotty

This is a plroblem with all 1500 series. The fix is simple. There is a little black slider cam to the left of the printer heads an just behind it. It is hard to see and identify, however, once you have found it you can fix this problem anytime. Take a pencil and use the eraser side to gently push the cam-slider back in place. Once this is done the printer heads will return to their normal position and the printer will function just fine. This was taught to me by the technichian in the printer shop whre I had taken the printer twice to fix this problem under warranty. Apparently there was a limit to overcharging Epson and they showed me how to fix it. Good luck!
