got an epson 1270 today which i had thought only needed a waste counter reset but it doesnt. All it does when you turn it on is flash all of the lights continously ,it is NOT detected by the computer and i can find nothing obvious wrong with it.
any ideas anyone?

as said in my first post the printer is not detected by the computer thus is impossible to reset. the fact that the computer will not detect it is probably a bad sign tho?

Through the parallel port I've been able to force the recognition of my printer while it was in an error condition. I've set SPP standard for the parallel port in the bios, installed the driver (without printing the test page) and with sscserve I have reset the protection counter.

help me: Because your printer is actually in a SERVICE ERROR CONDITION, with those flashing lights, is why the printer is not recognized by your computer. You may need to go on-line and buy and download the actual Reset Procedure, to be able to correct your printers service error, before your computer will recognize it. "2manuals.com", offers a "Stylus Photo 870, 1270 Printers Service Program", that can be downloaded for around $9.00. Even if you actually reset your printer, you will need to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones, or at least wash and dry the old Waste Ink Pads. If you don't, then your printer will eventually go into an overflow condition and ink will then usually leak out the bottom of the printer. You can see "Exploded Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water, then dry them out and simply reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...THIS ADDITIONAL INFO MIGHT ALSO BE OF SOME HELP: Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...Unfortunatly, that "SSC Service Utility" does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems and sometimes will not even work on actually listed printer models, so you will have to check it out for yourself. Just in case that source does not work: You may actually need to go on-line to try and locate a "SERVICE MANUAL", to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals for most Epson Printers, from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=2_18 (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 /- ) ...Good Luck! Yes I too managed to reset a 1270 as well I could not get it to go with all lights flashing So I took the battery out to start with (oh yes it has one on the printers main board cr 2032 3volt like a motherboard battery )but do this as a last resort as the sscserve.exe software will do the same I believe and you have to watch which screws you take out (pull power out first then remove 5 screws along top edge at back of metal box section then one on left hand side where ribbon goes down from top then two on the right hand side at back edge. the electronic box will then fall off dont snap ribbons on sharp edges.
This will reset the non volotile memory to zereo. Then I set the paralell port to basic operation but I am not convinced this actually did the trick may be it did you can do it through the control panel then system then devices then LPT port config to basic. Then I ran the sscserve soft reset ---printer not found so I tried reset the protection counter still printer not found. I then tried holding ink and paper buttons down and powering up printer, the paper light only comes on then I released both buttons for a half a second and then pressed and held the ink button until the motors of the printer came to life in about 10 seconds. Then reset the printer port config back to auto config (ecp) and it worked . Many thanks for all help.

The sequence to reset the waste ink counter is as follows:
WASTE INK ROM RESET ONLY 870, 1270
1. Turn the printer off using the power button on the panel of the printer. 2. Disconnect the interface cable at the back of the printer. 3. Hold down the "LOAD/EJECT" and "CLEANING" buttons simultaneously. 4. Turn the printer on. Release all buttons as soon as paper out light flashes. 5. Quickly press (within 3 seconds while PAPER OUT light is flashing) the "CLEANING" button for 10 seconds. 6. Release the button and the printer will initialize. 7. Once initialization is complete, turn the printer off. 8. Reconnect the interface cable. 9. Turn the printer on
Works great, no muss...no fuss!

I had this problem with my 1280 epson. I took it into a service center and paid $35.00 for them to tell me that it would cost $270 to replace two sets of pads and an ink tray. I bought the r1800.

I tried a couple of button combinations. I tried removing the little battery on the board for a day and the lights kept stubbornly blinking. Then I got on the net and a really helpful guy probably on the other side of the world (I am in Melbourne Australia) with nick of artstech saved me :)) Worked like a charm. Will wash and dry pads to stop any ink overflow.

Hi.....I was about to dump my 1270 that has seen heavy service since bought new 4 years back (lost count of how many carts I've used - dozens probably) as all the lights started blinking and the local Epson 'Express Service Centre' advised me that the printer was beyond repair and parts weren't available anyway.
Saw your tip above, tried it, and presto - worked as described and printer back to life. Now all I have to do is try and get rid of the clogging that seems to have developed over the week of enforced idleness!
One question - several people refer to cleaning the ink pads. Any idea how to access them? Or get a user friendly service manual?
Thanks for your help!!

Yes, this also seems to have worked for me. I called Epson and they said there was no saving the unit. Maybe someday I'll post on all the absolute trouble I've had with this unit. It's always banded and sprayed gobs of black ink all over my pics. I've cleaned and cleaned and cleaned and cleaned, to no avail. I will never buy Epson again, that's for sure.

Please identify yourself in your post. Parts, including the waste ink pads, are available. Lets try again. Are all 4 lights flashing or are the power and paper out lights flashing and the two ink lights solid?
Re: epson R210 all light blinking by lutfial (12/22/05 11:04 PM) reply
This is a bit confusing. When you say all lights are blinking does that also include the power light? If the power light is on solidly and the paper and ink lights are flashing alternatively, this is a maintenance error. Service or replace the waste ink pads and reset the eeprom chip on the computer. Search this site for instructions on how to reset the chip. Hope this helps.

how does one get to waste pads on the Epsons. I have done this before with a Canon inkjet printer, it took awhile, but after it dried, bingo. the little sucker works.
Roy, Remove the screws from the top, side and front covers. Remove the screws holding the print mechanism onto the base. Remove the clip holding the left side of the mechanism onto the waste ink tray. Lift the mechanism off the tray. Hope this helps.

Me, too, I wasted some time with Epson eTalk and all they said is, I have to give it to a repair station and pay at least € 50,-, which is more than a second-hand-model. They even told me, that they are not allowed to tell me what to do myself because of some laws. I think this is the cheapest rip off I ever came across, who does epson think they are?
Ok, now I'm better, thanks for listening.
Or is there any reason someone could explain to me why they are responding that way?

My Epson 1270 printer went all lights blinking today. I called Epson and some guy in India wanted $9.99 to "diagnose" the problem. I hesitated and he offered to hear what was wrong before charging me. I told him I had powered off and on a bunch of times and checked for obstructions. He said I needed to take the printer to a repair facility and gave me the name of a local shop. I called the shop and the guy said I needed a new printer pad for $13.72 plus $65.00 labor to install.
I start researching on the internet and find the SSC service utility but it cannot communicate with the printer via the USB cable in the all lights blinking mode.
So I find this thread and follow the artstech button reset directions and amazingly, IT WORKS! Prints good as new.
So now the dilemma, to try to rinse or change the ink pad or just ignore it. I have had the printer for several years in Florida and I can't imagine that much of the ink has not dried up and evaporated. On the otherhand, somebody said if it overflows it can damage the heads. If the ink overflows from the pad, that is really not such a big deal. The directions for disassembly to get to the pad do not sound trouble free. Anybody have advice?
Re: Re: epson 1270 all lights blinking by WaveGuide (5/29/07 1:51 PM) reply
Hellofotogreg, The pad referred to is situated in the base of the printer well away from the print head. It receives waste ink that's pumped away from under the print head. It has no direct connection with the print head and cannot harm it if it becomes flooded with waste ink. All that will happen is the excess waste ink will eventually overflow from the base and cause a mess. If this is the first occasion the waste pad warning has ocurred, I think you can reasonably wait till it happens a second time. At that point, it would be wise to clean or replace the pad. Cheers, JaX

I have an Epson R210 with both lights flashing, not the on button. I've tried the advice in this help section with no results. I've been using refilled cartridges. Are they likely to cause any problem? Anybody else had trouble with refills? Your help would really be appreciated.

Thank you for posting such clear directions for fixing my EPSON 1270 - I had resigned myself to either an expensive new printer or hours trying to fix it - found your post immediately and it worked perfectly - all fixed in about 3 minutes. Even after 4 years, it is still really useful advice.

Amazing that this forum still works :) My Epson printed a picture in the wrong way: landscape in stead of portrait. And after this error of mine, the left cartridge Led keeps on blinking. No matter what cartridge I put in (original or refilled) it blinks. Even a reset as discribed above does not help. Before I have to strip this device completely I would like to have some advice. (Also checked the contacts between cartridge and wagon)

I have the blinking light problem. I have tried the reset procedure and the SSC utility to no avail. My question is as follows:
If I replace the lithium battery will I need to use the Epson adjustment utility? The service manual suggests this. If this is so, where can I get that utility? Thanks
