i was wondering if there was a do it your self waste ink absorber in those canon products. I don't want to send a printer who's absorber is full all the way to canon where they make it. Can you buy one of those and change it by yourself? my printer is a canon pixma ip1500 Thanks

From what I know about Canon repairs and warranty service, having done Canon warranty repairs for the past 4 years you wouldn't be sending your printer directly to CANON, but to a Canon authorized service center in or near your location.
With your model, the pixma ip1500 you can do either of these options;
You can contact Canon customer care and request that Canon do what is called an "instant exchange", which means they will send you a replacement unit and you will return your defective unit when the replacement unit arrives at your home/office. Inside the box will be a return authorized UPS shipping label, you attach the label to the box, put your defective unit in the box and take it to your nearest UPS shipping store and AWAY goes your printer with FULL waste ink absorber pad.
OR you can contact a Canon authorized service center and they will place a warranty order for a "whole unit exchange", which will be shipped to that service center, they will test the unit and you will pick it up there when it is ready. In order to process that service under warranty you would need to take your defective unit to the service center, and let them take care of their end of it.
The difference in the two is that when you deal directly with Canon Customer Care they will process your order over the phone and the replacement unit will be shipped to your home.
When dealing with a Canon authorized service center you would have to take your printer to their location, then return when your replacement unit arrives a few days later.
Certain models that Canon produces they don't deem as being units that they want repaired, but they just replace the units with another model of the same type. The pixma ip1500 is a very simple printer with a very simple design, and not very expensive.
I hope I haven't been redundant in my explanation, just wanted to make sure you understood the difference in the two types of warranty service for your particular model.

For certain Canon models that are still under warranty, the only service option available to both the authorized Canon service center and the customer is a "replacement unit" through the methods that I posted about.
UNDER WARRANTY, no cost at all, unless the customer is shipping the unit to a service center THEN the customer would be responsible for the shipping cost TO the service center.
CANON reimburses their service centers for shipping BACK TO the customer and their should be no charge for return shipping BACK TO the customer. Your mileage may vary depending on what service center you're dealing with.
