 | reset program for stylus colour 480 by Evolsen (10/23/04 11:19 PM) reply | + / - | Hi everyone I've got an epson stylus colour 480 that stopped printing yesterday with the error message "Unknown error. Unplug....". From reading on this forum I know that it's probably the protection counter that needs to be reset. I downloaded the SSC Service Utility and ran it. I get the message that the counter has been reset but I still get the same message trying to print. On the SSC download page it doesn't actually mention this particular printer model (only 480 LPT - is that the same?). Any ideas anyone? Is there a reset program specifically for the stylus colour 480? Any help appreciated. If you do have a program that will work (under XP), Could you please email it to me? Thanks heaps :)

If it is different from zero there may be problems with the ssc program and your printer/firmware. I remember that with some older releases of SscService there were problems using the parallel port with Windows 2000 /xp but such issues should have been already addressed.

 | Re: reset program for stylus colour 480 by Denny Conway (10/25/04 11:48 AM) reply | + / - | Evolsen...JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: A Service Error where you get an "Unknown Error Message", is normally a Maintenance Request Error. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and normally your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water, then dry them out and simply reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...Unfortunatly, that "SSC Service Utility" does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems and sometimes will not even work on actually listed printer models, so you will have to check it out for yourself. Just in case that source does not work: You may actually need to go on-line to try and locate a "SERVICE MANUAL" or a "RESET PROCEDURE", to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals for most Epson Printers, from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=2_18 (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 /- ). You can also find most Service Adjustment Programs/Resets from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=1_56_50 ...The only other source for a FREE RESET PROCEDURE [that I know of] is one posted earlier by WES on this Printer Repair Site: www.resetters.com . Because that site is actually a Russian Site, it is of course hard to figure out. You will probably need to use sime type of TRANSLATION PROGRAM, such as "ImTranslator/PROMT Online", at http://www.paralink.com/ims/ , just to be able to try and use it...Good Luck! Denny Conway
