 | HP Photosmart 1115 - Won't turn on by Kathy (10/16/04 10:56 AM) reply | + / - | Hello! My Photosmart 1115 just quit working. It won't turn on and power up & I've tried it in several outlets. I tried the hard reset, but that didn't work. I had previously been receiving error messages about the colored ink cartridge not being properly installed, so I removed and replaced the cartridges, but that didn't help either. If I can't get power to the thing, I can't do ANYthing! The HP site says to find the document titled "HP Deskjet and Photosmart printers - The Printer will not Turn On, No Light Indications." But that document is nowhere to be found. HELP! I use WIN98 on a Dell Dimension desktop PC. Thank you! Kat

If it is, verify that you have a good power cord. If you have a multimeter you can check it for continuity. If that is not possible, the cords are avaiable at Radio Shack for under $5. If all of this goes nowhere, the interal power supply has probably failed. You will have to remove the case to test it. Again, a multmeter is required. The power supply will output 18V DC when the power is plugged in. The power supply P/N is C6429-60208. Photosmart 1115, removing the case 1. Remove the two T10 Torx screws in the top of the case. 2. Remove the panel in the rear that surrounds the interface cable connectors. There are two indents where you can pry with a medium sized slot style screwdriver. Disconnect the white flat cables. 3. Remove the rear access door and press the release tab in both upper corners of the opening. 4. Open the hinged cover and release the two "claw" latches using a slot screwdriver. One is in front of the Service Station and the other is on the opposite side in the same relative position. These are a bit tricky to release but patience will prevail. 5. Now the case should lift straight up and off like it's relative the Deskjet 970, but it will not. HP has played a really neat trick that I haven't learned to defeat cleanly. The vertical sides of the paper tray each have a 'claw' latch hidden inside about 1" down from the top edge that meets the case. On the right side the latch engages an invisible metal tab that attaches to the case. This prevents it from lifting off. You'll notice the resistance after the other four latches are released. Things I've tried First remove the sliding paper tray. Go to this web page for instructions. h10025.www1.hp.com It may be helpful to wiggle the side of the paper tray that grabs that pesky metal tab. First check the service station for liquid ink. If there is some, it will spill if you tilt the printer. If things look safe tilt the printer with the paper tray up. You will see a 'claw' latch on the underside of the right paper tray 'nose'. Releasing it may help. Resist violent urges.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 - Won't turn on by Kathy (10/17/04 3:49 PM) reply | + / - | Hi Bert, I thank you for your detailed reply. My husband has a multimeter (he's an electrician, but doesn't work on pcs or printers) and said the power cord is fine. He used your directions to try to see if the internal power supply had failed, but couldn't get past removing the white ribbons. He wasn't sure which end should come out, and one did come out of the "board side", but left the beige "frame" (sorry for the wrong words here...I don't know what it's called) piece in the board. He doesn't know if he ruined it or not...the ribbon did go back in, but he didn't want to mess with it any further. Is there anything else to try? Would paying someone to repair this cost more than just replacing? I'd like to replace with a machine that would scan and copy too... Is there one that would do that and use the same ink cartridges? I have several cartridges left over (expensive!) and I hate to waste them. Thank you much, Kat

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 - Won't turn on by Bert (10/17/04 7:39 PM) reply | + / - | Once the white cables are unplugged from the electronics board, the next step is removing the case, which I mentioned is even tricky and frustrating for me. If you can find a shop that will work on it, the repair will likely cost over $100. Call around. Tell them the indications are that you have a dead power supply. Don't let them tell you that the power supply is unavailable. The P/N I gave you is listed for a Deskjet 970 and will work in your 1115. No all-in-one currently in production uses the 45 and 78 cartridge set. A good all-in-one from the some era as your photosmart is the Officejet K80. The trick is finding a used one that is truely in good condition. You run into a lot of fixer-uppers on eBay for guys like me. The link below shows one that is complete. Be aware that people commonly sell them without the external power supply. Don't be afraid to ask the seller questions. Don't let the extremely cheap price fool you because serious bidding does not start until the last minute of the auction. cgi.ebay.com The K80 would be one of my top picks if I needed an all-in-one for my personal use. The manuals and drivers are downloadable from HP. It's not that hard to setup an eBay account. Just don't use your email address as your user name. I did in once and ended up with all kinds of unsolicited email.

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 - Won't turn on by Kathy (10/17/04 8:22 PM) reply | + / - | Actually, my PhotoSmart 1115 uses the 45/78 cartridges! This is good news (that current all-in-ones use the same?) Would you recommend an HP all-in-one? I'm off to check out ratings...

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 - Won't turn on by Bert (10/17/04 8:59 PM) reply | + / - | NO current HP all-in-one uses the 45 and 78 cartridge set. The K80 is out of production. The new models are 'cartridge hogs', meaning that they have less ink in the cartridges (not only HP), like about half the capacity of the 45. If you can deal with spendng more money for ink, get a new one. Don't let the lower cost of HP's current favorite fool you, the 56 cartridge, you still end up paying more per ml of ink (30%).

 | Re: HP Photosmart 1115 - Won't turn on by Kathy Davis (10/20/04 7:31 AM) reply | + / - | Bert, I just wanted to thank you for all your time in trying to help me. Where are you located? I have four non-working printers at home now. I'm hoping I can find someone who fixes & sells printers for a profit.. and that they'll take everything off my hands in exchange for fixing my PS1115. My frustration level is maxed out and I can't buy another until my hubby's work situation improves. Do you know anyone in the South Bend, IN/Niles, MI area who might be interested in such a deal? Kat
