 | Canon i550 by deco-cat (10/1/04 11:10 AM) reply | + / - | Ihave a Canon i550 that has worked beautifully..until a few months ago. It still does a wonderful job printing images and scanned documents. The problem is that when I try to print a document from MS Word, or I try to scan and print a document, the printer seems to want to blur and skip every fourth line. It doesn't do this at any other time. I've deep-cleaned the heads, follwed the trouble-shooting guide, and contacted Canon, with their solution being that I need to pack it up and send it to them. Before I do that, does anyone know anything that might help?

 | Re: Canon i550 by Jeff P. (10/1/04 1:18 PM) reply | + / - | I currently have a Canon Multipass MP360 and I had the same problem about a month or so ago. What I did to my printer was to open the top, you know when you are ready to replace the cartridges? But instead of taking out the cartridges remove the cradle that holds the cartridges. On the bottom of the cradle is where the ink is released from cartridge onto the paper. You need to wipe the bottom of the cradle with a paper towel, this will clear up any ink buildup on the unit. After doing this my printer worked fine, no more skipping every 4th line, etc. Let me know if this helps your problem. P.S. Depending on the printer you might be able wipe the bottom of that cradle without having to remove it. If so, I'd recommend that before removing it from the printer.

 | Re: Canon i550 by Jessica (10/24/04 10:21 AM) reply | + / - | I have a Canon 1550 printer also and it has just started to do the whole skipping lines deal. I was happy to see some other people had the same problem and were actually able to fix it, but I still got a little difficulty. I know how to remove the ink cartridges but not the cradle itself. That is if its even able to be removed. Please, someone help me out. Thanks
|
 | Re: Canon i550 by Sean (10/25/04 5:30 AM) reply | + / - | Remove all the ink cartridges, lift the grey lever on the left hand side, and pick the cradle up. It should just lift by itself without much effort. If it doesn't, just squeeze the two sides first.

 | Re: Canon i550 by Claudia (10/30/04 2:27 PM) reply | +3 + / - | Hello, its been 4 months since I used my canon i550 printer. I bought all new cartridges and when I send any document or photo, the black ink will not print. I performed two to three Print Head Deep Cleanings and the problem remians. I tried cleaning the print head my self with a Qtip and it did not work either . Can someone please help me. I'm about to give up on canons and go buy a new printer. Thank you in advanced.

 | Re: Canon i550 by Jim MacCallum (10/30/04 6:25 PM) reply | + / - | I have had a canon i550 printer for about two years and was very happy until suudenly it started flashing the code indicating that the print head is faulty. To replace this part after having printed less than 100 8x10 prints seems outrageous, Cost is $60.00 canadian. For a machine that only cost about $250.00 this replacement part cost seems at best to be excessive and at worst, just a **** rip off by what I thought was a reliable manufacturer. I have used Canon cameras as a full time photographer for over 30 years. Has anyone out there got a solution.

 | Re: Canon i550 by sharni (11/8/04 7:44 PM) reply | + / - | My Canon i550 refuses to print text documents from either of my word processing programs (WORD and WordPro). The page comes out blank. If I change the text to a dard colour, then it prints OK. If I print a document (black text) but choose a high res print (photo quality), it prints OK too. I am confident that it uses the black ink, because it runs out eventually and black prints in photos etc. Have cleaned the print head cradle thingy as described above and tried the deep clean function, but still not printing. I do notice that when I send the document to print (black text) that it spools quickly. When printing in a dark colour, spooling takes significantly longer time but that may be because it is in a colour. Any ideas?

 | Canon i550 - Gift from the GODS by Wonka (11/15/04 6:48 PM) reply | + / - | I have just one problem with the dear old printer, it seems to stop wanting to drag in paper when it needs to print, the problem comes and goes.... i even lubricated the whole shitz nit but it seems to be a gravity problem i suppose, if i stand the paper straing up (not rested on the paper tray it works fine... Any ideas besides my own of the paper gravity? it happends with just one or many sheets of paper, light and/or heavy... Odd. printer indeed.. But it does remind me of elder days when computers and printers used to stop working just becuse... ^_^ Cheers

 | Re: Canon i550 Printer head by Tello (11/17/04 5:41 PM) reply | + / - | I recently received the wrong ink tank cradle from Canon to replace the one in my S520 When I called Canon to tell them that they sent me the wrong ink tank cradle I think, it is called the printer head cartridge, for which they apologized and sent me the proper Printhead for my S520 I asked them if they wanted me to send it back and they said to keep it and sell it on ebay. So before I do, and this forum is concerning the i550, I thought I would mention here to alert you that it will be on Ebay in a short while that is If anyone responds to my post. Just tell me you wouuld be interested and I will place it on Ebay for a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

 | Re: Canon i550 by Dragon (11/19/04 2:53 PM) reply | + / - | Hi I also have a Canon i550 which was working fine until I replaced the black ink cartrige, then it printed anything black very badly, colour was fine. I cleaned the printer heads as suggested & it has improved greatly, I can now read what is printed. I had tried the Canon website but could get no info good or bad there. Thanks.
|
 | Re: Canon i550 by Sean (11/20/04 5:07 AM) reply | + / - | Dragon, I have EXACTLY the same problem as you. Everything was fine until I replaced all the ink cartriges, now black prints out very weird, and when I do a nozzle check, only the black ink seems out of alignment but other two colors are fine. Anything else you did to resolve the problem?
|
 | Re: Canon i550 by tello (11/20/04 11:39 AM) reply | + / - | Hi Sean, I tried at first to deep clean a couple of times and that worked for a while. One other suggestion is to take out the cradle that has the print head on it and try to clean the bottom with a dampened soft cloth with some Hydrogen Peroxide solution and wipe the bottom where the ink comes out, wipe very gently and try that . I also have found some great tips on how to clean your print head as well as other helpful hints on a site at www.netwares.com I hope this is of some help to you as well as to anyone else on this forum

 | Re: Canon i550 by Josh (11/23/04 10:46 AM) reply | + / - | Ok so this is a common problem, I started by cleaning then deep cleaning the black, now slowly but surely it is fading away, I now adjust the intensity and colour balance on the black to max, and select the higest print quality, and I can jut make out lovely faded grey writing. All the other colours are perfect, I've, cleaned, deep cleaned, removed, cleaned, replaced and prayed, all to no avail, I know wher Mr Canon can stick any product of his!!! Unless any one else has a solution

 | Re: Canon i550 by Dave M (12/2/04 8:18 PM) reply | + / - | My Canon I550 stopped printing and I was getting the seven yellow blinks. Canon wanted $45 shipping tax for new print head. But they suggested I take it to a service center. Part labor 4 40 mile drives. Removed the print head and soaked it in plain alcohol. Blew down thru the pads were the tanks seat and blew it out thru the nozzles.Blew it dry with duster. Works fine now.

|
 | Re: Canon i550 by Dave M (12/9/04 10:58 AM) reply | + / - | New Canon I550 print head: www.inkjetrefills.com has some Canon print heads for sale on their site. Don't know if it is the one you need tho. They list them by print head model numbers, which do not correspond to printer model numbers. Most likely you will either have to go to Canon parts on their web page and pay $43 plus tax and shipping or one of their repair shops and pay $50 plus tax and labor. Read my 02 Dec post before you do either. After having given the above some thought it may be better to just take an eyedropper and put the rubbing alcohol on the tank pads and let it soak it's way down to, thru and out the nozzles. That way you don't risk destroying the print head by imersing it in the alcohol. Only the ink path is affected. Then using a duster or compressed air blow out the remains. And for the long term health of any ink jet printer: Make up a document with large letters in different colors. Run it thru the printer maybe at least once every 10 days to keep the ink from drying up in the nozzles. Kinda a waste of (overpriced) ink, but cheaper in the long run. And all of the above is the reason I will not pay much more than $100 US for a printer. I wait until they have been out a few months. By then they are ready to be discontinued and discounted for the new, soon-to-be-obsolete model.

 | Re: Canon i550 blank ink won't print by mbeckman (12/20/05 4:48 PM) reply | + / - | So it seems as if no one's given a clear concise fix here. I had the problem where the black ink just stopped working and nothing I did would make it work. So, I removed all four cartridges. That left the thingy that whizzes back and forth which I couldn't pull out. But, the seat in which the cartridges sit -- the thing with four dots on the bottom -- can be gently pulled out (just under the handle that swings down on the cartridges, grab one side of the seat and you can pull that forward and lift it out). It reveals a bunch of copper spikes on the vertical surface of the thing that whizzes, and matching copper squares on the back of the seat. This seat thing may be called the printhead -- I don't know.
Anyway, I flipped over the cartridge seat and ohmigod there was a black chunk of muck and goo and hair (I have two dogs and two cats) on the right hand side (looking down on it). So I took isopropanol and cotton swabs and Q tips and cleaned off as much of it as I could. (My first move was to *scrape* the gunk off.) Then I ran the "clean printhead" utility a bunch of times -- probably half a dozen, with a couple "really clean printhead" thrown in. I'd run the "print test" utility every so often to see if I was making any progress. It took a couple cleanings and then I could see the black faintly. Eventually, the black came out just as dark as ever. Problem solved. Yay!
|
 | Re: Re: Canon i550 blank ink won't print by mbeckman (12/20/05 4:52 PM) reply | + / - | Forgot to mention -- before I took the seat out, I tried cleaning the silver circle under the black cartridge with a Q tip and hydrogen peroxide. Didn't help. But then, I had a *lot* of goo under there.

 | Re: Re: Canon i550 by Anonymous (1/26/06 12:48 PM) reply | + / - | If you're having problems printing a PDF file, either a: select "print as image" (from advanced under print options) or b: go to print options, then properties, under main you will see "print to grayscale" - check that box and it may work

 | Canon i550, the black cartridges is not working by Anonymous (2/7/06 8:45 AM) reply | + / - | I have a Canon i550 printer and recently the black cartridges is not working (the color ones work fine). By the way, I have just replaced my black cartridge.
I have deep-cleaned it following the trouble-shooting guide and things remain the same.
Can anybody help me with this?
|
 | Re: Canon i550, the black cartridges is not workin by mbeckman (2/7/06 9:30 AM) reply | + / - | Read the message dated mbeckman (12/20/05 4:48 PM), 3 above yours. I had just put in a new cartridge myself before I decided to take the thingy apart. Good luck! You should be able to tell quickly if that's the problem, for example, if there's black gunk under the seat.

 | Re: Canon i550 by hrb (2/14/06 2:06 AM) reply | + / - | Hi...I'd appreciate any advice. I have been pleased with my canon i550, not had any problems.
Yesterday the light on the top started flashing orange...7 blinks then back to green. It won't print anything now.
Does anyone have any ideas what I should be doing, keeping in mind I am technology challenged in a serious way.
Thanks.

 | Re: Canon i550 by gordonA (2/20/06 1:37 PM) reply | + / - | My Canon i550 is delivering poor quality colour printing: test print shows that exactly half of the cyan nozzles are not firing. It doesn't appear to be blocked nozzles - no amount of deep cleaning / water cleaning / compressed air blowing will change the situation. I guess one complete group of nozzles are not firing. Question is, is it worth replacing the printhead (at £60 or so...) on the assumption that the fault is in that unit, or is it likely that the fault is in the electronics that drive the printhead - in which case I'd be wasting my £60. Is it time to bin it and get a new printer...?
Has anyone had any similar experience?

 | Re: Canon i550 by guest (3/21/06 9:46 AM) reply | + / - | for replacement printhead try looking on U.S. ebay, I saw some at £32 equivilent including postage which makes the decision to try or not a bit easier.
Not sure how environmentally friendly it is to get posted from the states mind!

 | Re: Re: Canon i550 by Anonymous (4/8/06 1:54 AM) reply | + / - | hi gordon i have a friends i550 that has the same fault, i believe that the problem is a resistor problem in the machine and i am going to advise her to throw it to the tip. i am using an i560 and when it packs it in i'm going to a brother mpc.seperate tanks and the ink tanks are not on the print head my son has one and has not had a problem less vibration on the parts.

 | Re: Canon i550 by dejudicibus (4/9/06 7:08 AM) reply | + / - | OK. Same to me: twice. Black stopped printing. Printer did not print only 10 days... :( I will clean printhead, crossing finger, but I think Canon should take its responsibility for such a bad piece of device. I found Interne plenty of people complaining that black stopped printing abruptly. Too many.

 | Re: Canon i550 by Anonymous (6/11/06 5:18 PM) reply | + / - | I have had luck with cleaning the heads on my i550 and i560. The ink cartridges do indeed sit inside the head assembly. Remove all the cartridges first. Then flip up the big gray lever and carefully coax the head assembly out of it's holder. Dont touch the gold contacts or the actual printheads underneath. They are delicate and easily damaged. Run it under warm (not hot) tap water until you can't see any more ink coming out. I filled a bowl with SOFT paper towels and water and soaked the heads over night, the soft wet toweling wont damage the heads. I rinsed away the softened ink and dried the whole thing with towels and an air blaster before I put the unit back into the printer. Then a few nozzle tests and cleanings and all is swell. I use my printers daily and often all day long. The less you use them the more likely they are to clog. Another problem I have noted is that the first printed sheet of the day is too dark, as if the black or blue ink slowly leaks down and gets on the other heads. I have to print a sheet of full of colors before I print anything else and then it's fine.

 | Re: Canon i550 by BAB (10/10/07 6:19 AM) reply | + / - | A solid orange light is a ram error on the main board. Sorry not much you can do unless you can get it in service mode. Try getting into service mode and do a waste ink reset or destination reset. To reset destination, in service mode click resume 5 times then power once, wait a sec then click resume two times and then power once. Then power again and that should turn off printer, then restart. If it fails, donate the printer the the locale garbage bin.
Sorry

 | Re: Re: Canon i550 by Anonymous (11/25/07 4:33 AM) reply | + / - | Hi Kenjo,
I have been getting a warning window that the waste tanks are almost full on my i550 printer. I note you are also having difficulties with this feature. I enquired at the shop where I usually buy my inks and was told that the printer needs a service however the expense of having a service might justify getting a new printer. I would be grateful to learn if you have received any help and what is the reset code to do with this? It has just occurred to me that there might be information on the disc - I'll get back to you if I find anything.

Sorry if I offer no solutions, only another problem. Any ideas?
