It is usually caused by a buildup of ink/paper dust on the face of the print head. For info on how to clean the face of the print head try this link http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/phface.html

Basically what you heed to do is start by pressimg the power button on the printer. Once the carriage moves from it's parked position pull the power cord. Next place a folded moist paper towel in tne path of the print head then pass the print head over the paper towel a few times. This will remove the old ink/paper dust off the face of the print head.
