 | epson c82 problems by frustrated w/ ep (9/25/04 6:57 PM) | -1 + / - | Two thumbs down on this printer - avoid it like the plauge. I've read every post on this site, cleaned the heads, drain tube, cotton, reloaded drivers, tried to call Epson service - but since my warranty is out my non-toll free call would cost 9.00 bucks. After 160.00 bucks in ink, the only thing it can print is a blank page. This printer has hardly ever been used and barley had the factory ink ran through it before lines appeared and color faded. I plan to smash it with a sledge hammer in the morning!!

 | You are not alone. by OmarCB (9/28/04 6:34 PM) | + / - | I buy from Epson 7 printers C43(x2), C63(x4 GRRRR), C85(x1) this the last stupid thing . Before a year I have several problems, Epson not resolve anything, these artifacts are made to fall in fault. 1) Ink cartrdge "decide" when ink is out. (buy cartridge or you can't print), 2) Every time I turn on the printer it starts a cleaning cycle (drunk with ink, epson is drunk with my money), when the printer "decides" that it is full of my wasted ink (money), it needs that visit Epson for printer reset. When I ask Epson about the MTBF (Medium Time Before Fault), Epson don't know anything. Then I want money back (only for C85) and the woman officer from Epson respond "jaja" I conclude EPSON = THIEF Next month I'll start legal action beacause they sold artifacts programmed to fail. (delictive action) Best regards.

 | No crap ! by Andy (10/5/04 11:21 AM) | + / - | Last time I buy an epson C82 printer prints great at the beginning but then starts printing like streaky, re-loaded drivers, and same thing only thing that worked was reloading the os XP but after 4 month started doing it again I gave up with that piece of crap.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Donna (10/7/04 12:21 PM) | + / - | Frustrated here too! Worked great for a year, then now all I can print are blank pages. Cleaned the print heads until I have used enough ink to buy a new printer and still no print. Wrote to Epson hoping support would give me an idea of what to try next. Their response: Call tech support for $9.00 fee. I have never used a generic cartridge and always spent the extra money to get an Epson cartridge thinking it would eliminate a lot of problems. Guess I was wrong. Don't think I will buy another Epson printer. Any suggestions for a good photo printer?

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (10/7/04 12:23 PM) | + / - | Donna: You might want to check out the "Stylus C82/C84 & CX-5200 Blank Output" information page, put out by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/tip_detail.cfm?TechTipID=23 . It may be of some help on your printers possible problem. It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a Hardware/Parts Failure, but no way for me to really know. It seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, as normal. I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about other peoples reports, just in case it happens to apply in your case...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: epson c82 problems by frustrated w/ ep (10/7/04 10:48 PM) | + / - | This is my opinion but I want to make my opinion perfectly clear to everyone who is having problems with these printers - the hardware/parts failure is bologna and changing the ink cartridges will not solve any problems. Epson knows the real problem and won't pull the printer off the market. Don't waste any more time or money on this worthless printer. After reviewing the website Denny supplied it just confirms how Epson wants you to spend your money on their worthless ink cartridges trying to fix a worthless printer that can only be repaired by replacing the worthless pump and print head. Take my advice - when you start having problems with Epson printers, cut your losses and run. And Denny, I'm not putting you down because you do give good advice, but I also understand you have your limits as to what you can say - keep up the good work, we all appreciate your help.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Tom (10/9/04 5:28 AM) | + / - | I've just spent £70 on ink for this pile of manure. The warranty's expired and i've hardly printed anything since I bought it, a lot of the first batch of ink was wasted trying to get a decent print. At the moment I can only print blank sheets of paper and my printer is also drunk on ink and my cash. It's probably a head clog, I didn't realise you had to be some sort of technical engineer to get these things to work. If anyone has any advice or can recommend a cheap printer that works? I would be gratefull

 | Re: epson c82 problems by ifty (10/10/04 1:33 PM) | + / - | I am starting to hate epson, but I moded my R300 so much I actuall like it now. Installed a CIS, I have made my own set of ink tanks on the side with filters installed inline just incase I get some crappy 3rd party ink. Chips always show full ink. I removed the little door off the rear of printer, and pulled the waste ink tube up and through it. I attached another piece of tube and ran that to a waste collection tank, I am amazed by how much ink is actually wasted (epson go figure!). Now I got what I payed for a printer that will print!!!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by wsnhmr (10/12/04 5:32 PM) | + / - | So, Who's up for a class action lawsuit?? I am going to investigate the possibilities. Only a month after my Epson C82 turned two, I cannot get it to print anything but blank pages. Sounds all too familiar? I am very angry that these greedy "bastages" can knowingly get away with charging so much for something they are more than aware is not going to work after only two years! I am going to send info to the news media as well. It may get nowhere, but I'll feel a touch better just the same. I have followed every procedure Epson has stated necessary, and the darn thing is still blank. It started as a result of changing cartridges and they told me I had to have a bad or dried up cartridge and you know what came next....I blew almost $50 on ink and it was useless!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by ifty (10/13/04 7:36 AM) | + / - | I notice now that when I print, I have to click "YES" every time to a message that says "You are not using genuin epson ink, The print quality may be less...blah blah.. do you wisht to print?" Click yes and it starts printing. Now that right there tells me the software (drivers) know it is not epson ink so when it goes for it's inital head clean (every time it prints it does one, unless you print repeatedly one after another within a few minutes)anyways when it goes for head clean, does it spit out more ink to clean than it would with an epson cartridge in it? Just something else to think about, maybe I should put in an epson cart and see what the waste amount is for like 5 or 6 head cleans and then do 5 or 6 head cleans with the CIS hooked up, I wonder if the volume of wasted ink would be the same? Anyways, I like the epson now that I had to work around all their B.S.
|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (10/13/04 9:19 AM) | + / - | That was off subject. "because you are using the wrong ink formulation [Generic or Third-Party Ink], you may have to do more "Printhead Cleaning Cycles" & "Nozzle Tests" to keep your printing quality up" I don't have problems with printing, the inks I use are just fine in it, never clogged, or anything of that nature. I don't do the printhead cleaning. It does it on its' own when the printer is turned on or when I start to print after waiting around 5 minutes from the last time it printed something. This epson is one fine printer, it prints every day, day after day and never dies. I am just complaining about why epson do some of the stuff they do! One is the waste ink tray, why don't they make that a pull out tray so the pads can be washed out? Why should I have to take the darn thing apart just to reach the pads? Anyways, I understand the reasons for the head clean and such, but I would bet that epson is so greedy that they would make it squirt a little more ink for head cleaning if it knew it was not real epson carts!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Mike (10/13/04 10:16 AM) | + / - | LOL! Again your way off topic! Again I will state for the last time! My elcheapo can print day in and day out, never had problems with them other than your typical waste ink pad or carts going empty to fast because they don't hold much. CIS fixed the ink, Hose mod fixed the draining! I feel that a simple little pull out tray EVEN ON THE CHEAP ONE'S ISN'T TO MUCH TO ASK FOR! MORONS LIKE ME WOULD NOT BITCH ABOUT SOMETHING AS STUPID AS THIS, IF THEY DIDN'T MAKE ALL THIS STUPID STUFF ON IT TO MAKE MORE MONEY! IF THEY WERE NOT MADE TO USE THEN IT SHOULD SAY DON'T PRINT NO MORE THEN 10 PAGES A WEEK ON THE BOX, INSTEAD OF HOW MANY PAGES IT CAN PRINT PER SECOND IN B/W OR IN COLOR!!!! You sound pretty upset with your job?, or just fixing printers in general?, if you don't like listening to bitches then get a new job/hobby! Don't waste your time reading post from a bunch of morons like me!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by ifty (10/13/04 11:40 AM) | + / - | PS. Majority of epson printer market is the cheap ones! Most people that purchased a new computer or what not purchased an epson. Don't know much about computers yet alone a printer. Maybe that is why you hear more complaints about the cheaper ones then you do more expensive ones!!!
|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by Steve (10/13/04 2:30 PM) | + / - | I have exactly the same problem as WSNHMR. Today I called my closest Epson repair centre and was told that they have a good idea what the problem is an that bottom line the printer isn't worth repairing as it would simply cost too much. This after yesterday spending 90 euros on new ink cartridges! For that money I could have bought a new printer. I'm deeply disappointed with Epson and will now buy an HP or Dell product. I just hope that Epson reads these complaints and realizes how hacked off people are.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (10/13/04 2:50 PM) | +1 + / - | Steve: Once you decide on a particular make & model of a new printer, be sure and check that printer out prior to actually buying it. You'll find just as many people unhappy with their inexpensive HP Printer, if you just take the time to do a search. Its a disposable world anymore, even if we don't agree with it or like it. People want and buy inexpensive ink jet printers from almost ALL MANUFACTORS, at a tremendous rate. The small inexpensive ink jet printer, is basically reguarded as being more or less disposable in the Printer World, especially anything under $100. Unfortunatly, its also starting to look like most printers under $150 are getting to be more or less disposable, as well. Think about it, you can usually buy a new printer cheaper than you can have your old printer repaired for, or at least close to the price. Today you can almost but a new inexpensive printer, cheaper than you can replace the ink cartridges for. People just don't want to pay for quality anymore, so all companies produce the cheap small ink jet printers. To keep those prices so low, quality is sacrificed and options are given up. Thats one of the reasons some new printers only have a 90 day warranty and it sometimes seems like they are lucky to last that long. Printers were more expensive, just a few years ago, but they were also built better and seemed to last longer. I know we get what we pay for, but it's still a shame...Denny Conway

 | Re: epson c82 problems by jan (10/13/04 3:06 PM) | + / - | wow wish i would have seen all these gripes before i bought this nice looking epson c82 - well anyway here is my story: Bought this printer from office depot. It worked great for about 4 weeks - still under warranty so i went to office depot they said sorry you have to contact epson company so i did. They made me go thru a bunch of senseless tests then determined just what i told them that the printer is not printing. They said send it back and we will send you...........whoooaa not a new one but a refurbished one. No choice had to have a printer that worked. ok got it in about two weeks it worked for about three weeks, same prob. called epson send it back they said we will send you ......still another refurbished printer. I now have the 3rd printer and it worked for about two months this time and i dont print alot of stuff. Now i am back to square one and this printer is still not out of warranty. I paid for a new printer plus i paid for the xtra replacement warranty thing and all i got was refurbished junk. I wish i could afford to buy something else but i can't i spent all my money on INK. Sorry i ever bought an epson. jan

 | Re: epson c82 problems by wsnhmr (10/13/04 3:33 PM) | +1 + / - | Mike: It is really sad that you are willing to let companies piss all over your hard earned money. We live in such a throw away society that people simply allow companies to take their money in trade for inferior product. Must not have been on this earth long enough to remember when companies took pride in what they produced at whatever value, it lasted, and they stood behind what they sold. Those days are clearly lost due to people like you who allow themselves to be taken advantage of. I paid for a "high quality, photo quality printer" according to Best Buy and Epson. Isn't that what I should expect in return?
|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by ifty (10/13/04 6:01 PM) | + / - | RIGHT ON! wsnhmr The epson box talks about how good the printer is and how it can print so many pages per minute and all this other crap.... hmm.... I guess there is fine print somewhere saying (This is not a real working printer, just print about 1 page and year and it will be ok!)
|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by Mike (10/14/04 8:19 AM) | + / - | "Must not have been on this earth long enough to remember when companies took pride in what they produced at whatever value, it lasted, and they stood behind what they sold. Those days are clearly lost due to people like you who allow themselves to be taken advantage of." Companies only pander to what the market wants. And people these days want the cheapest goods they can get their greedy mitts on. It's no surprise (to me anyway) that these cheaper products don't last especially when left running constantly. It would be a bit hard for companies to mass produce cheap goods and still make a profit if they listened to you and went back to the good ol' days of hand making items with more expensive parts yet still sold them dirt cheap! Printers have come right down in price over the last five years because people want them to. If nobody bought cheap goods then companies would stop making them at least to the volume that they do. As I've already said, you get what you pay for. 100 dollars is really cheap for a machine that produces photographic quality images. I don't think you realise that. "I paid for a "high quality, photo quality printer" according to Best Buy and Epson. Isn't that what I should expect in return?" I dunno. I don't even know which model your talking about though what I will say about "best buy" is that they only focus on the output and how fast it prints so in that respect it probably is those things. And I'd imagine Epson aren't going to tell you much more either. "Again I will state for the last time! My elcheapo can print day in and day out, never had problems with them other than your typical waste ink pad or carts going empty to fast because they don't hold much. CIS fixed the ink, Hose mod fixed the draining! " By stating that you have had to "mod" your printer so that it can take more ink you admit that a mod free version dosen't meet your printing requirements yet you are on here moaning about the standard of the product ie the waste ink fills up to quick. Just buy a suitable machine, eg one with bigger ink carts and stop being a tight-arse. "I feel that a simple little pull out tray EVEN ON THE CHEAP ONE'S ISN'T TO MUCH TO ASK FOR! MORONS LIKE ME WOULD NOT BITCH ABOUT SOMETHING AS STUPID AS THIS, IF THEY DIDN'T MAKE ALL THIS STUPID STUFF ON IT TO MAKE MORE MONEY! " Ok then, explain to me how Epson make money on out-of-warranty cheap printers when the cost to repair is higher than buying a new printer. This should be interesting... "IF THEY WERE NOT MADE TO USE THEN IT SHOULD SAY DON'T PRINT NO MORE THEN 10 PAGES A WEEK ON THE BOX, INSTEAD OF HOW MANY PAGES IT CAN PRINT PER SECOND IN B/W OR IN COLOR!!!! " Do you need a box to tell you everything???? Use some common sense ffs or ask someone who knows what the hell they're selling! If you buy a cheap car, you get info about how it can go from 0-60 in x sec or it has a top speed of xxx mph. They don't say, "oh by the way sir, because your car is a cheapo one there is a higher than normal risk that the gear box will fall out if you rally it along a country road!" You've got a brain Ifty - USE IT!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by wsnhmr (10/14/04 11:30 AM) | + / - | Must be nice to have money to burn. I can't imagine why one would think it's OK to just toss $100 here and $100 there year after year when you know you are not getting quality. I'll see if I can catch some cash if ya toss it out the window....maybe the wind will carry it. The 'average joe' doesn't have that luxery, they have kids, mortgage, college to save for, two autos and don't get me started on insurance for teens! There are those of us with serious medical conditions with outrages med bills and insurance rates, etc., etc. A lot to consider when you start looking into printers for a computer.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by ifty (10/14/04 11:56 AM) | + / - | :) Good luck mike, enjoy life! I do. Epson = greed just like most other big corps seeking money, crap on the consumer! I have a brain, it tells me they should make a quality product, or don't make one at all! I can live with changing cartridges if they didn't cost to much! $120 for 6carts or $200 for six PINTS! Only real reason I went to CIS, "SAVINGS" Give me a break! I got a family with 2 kids, I don't make much money, I got $14,000 in college loans, I got mortage, I got 1 new car, one used car, medical insurance up over %30 last two years.... blah..blah.. I want what I payed for! A good PRINTER!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by BlargMeister (10/15/04 5:13 PM) | + / - | This is a good thread, and I hope that some consumer groups get a hold of it. I bought an Epson Stylus C82 about a year ago. It was cheap, and I new it was a throw away, but I at least expected it to last for more than 100 pages. Before I went through my first Ink Cartridges, a part broke instead the print and was found loose inside. I returned the printer and received a refurbished one. Less than a week later, the black ink stops working, and no amount of cleaning fixes it. Sprung for another cartridge, but that was a waste, as it did not fix the problem. I wish I would have seen this thread a long time ago, as I really like dthe printer when it was working. Now that my household goods have arrived, I am back to using an old Epson Stylus 740 printer that is over 5 years old. It still preforms flawlessly and actually responds to head cleanings, unlike the C82. I can only wish the Pox on Seiko/Epson on their foray into obsolescence. To think of all the man hours they spent getting their reputation built up, only to have it destroyed by poorly designed products with an extremely high appetite for consumables. Epson has lost me as a customer for good.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by jdw (10/20/04 9:16 AM) | + / - | This has been an enlightening message thread. I wish it had been here 18 months ago when I started buying Epsons. We have four of the C82's and several of the C64's. Of the four C82's, all have failed. The first time this happened, the unit was still under warranty and I managed to get a replacement. This is the only one still in service. The other C82's failed within months after the one year warranty expired. This model is not worth buying. If you have one, don't use off brand ink, with this model, it's a killer. The C64's work well and it produces good quality output. However it has relatively low capacity because the ink cartridges are small. Not a problem for home users, but in an office setting where scores of pages are printed daily, it is a nuisance to change cartridges every week or so. I agree with one of the earlier posts. No mater what brand, don't go by price alone, especially if you are Home office or small business and depend on your printer. I selected these because they were inexpensive, that was a mistake with the C82.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Ed (10/20/04 2:54 PM) | + / - | I am ready to junk a C82. I've been though the cleaning drill dozens of times plus a shot of EKS cleaner I bought off the internet. The cyan nozzels will not print which makes it useless for photos. I can still use it for letters and reports so when that black cartridge is empty the printer is gone. Ed

 | Re: epson c82 problems by totallyteresa (10/20/04 4:30 PM) | + / - | My C82 was given as a present in Aug.'03. I generally only print for my volunteer organization and some personal stuff. In April I had to replace the black...everything is well & good. Then in August I tried to print directions to go away for a short holiday and it would not print so I broke down and spent the exhorbident amount it cost to replace the colour cartridges and still it would not print. I am the computer nit-wit of the family and the advice from my sister was clean the heads....10-12 times if you have to. Well some time and much wasted ink later I gave up and went to bed (slightly ticked-off, I must say). Now I am told chuck it out!! It's no good if you only wish to print occaisionally. Before all this trouble I had seen the printer on sale for $35.00 (CAD) huh!!! I had spent $180.00 (CAD) on the thrift pack of new cartridges...could have gotten a whole new unit for way less and used the old (useless) one as a door stop!! Teresa

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Bill (10/22/04 3:49 AM) | + / - | I to have an Epson C82, little over a year old and it prints nothing. I left it sit for about 3 weeks and then it quit printing. Have used only Epson ink. Have used a set of ink cleaning it. Called support and got nothing. I will never buy another Epson printer.
|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by MeToo (10/25/04 8:17 AM) | + / - | Same problem here ... bought a C82 for my dad, and after about 14 months in a very low-volume home office (hadn't even been through the first complete toner yet), it started printing only blank pages. We cleaned, removed / reinstalled software, nozzle tests, replaced cables, etc. - everything logical. Then he fell for the "replace all the toners" for $120 CDN, and still nothing. I called Epson tech support and the only thing they had to say was "we've never heard of that problem before". They offered to have Customer Service call me, and I'll see what they have to say, but after reading all your posts, I'm not optimistic. I totally agree you get what you pay for, but for a low-volume situation like this (and almost all in black & white), this printer should definitely last longer than this!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Rauks (10/25/04 4:08 PM) | + / - | Guys, The problem is with the pads used,Ink builds up and tube comes out on the capping. After cleaning and replace the pads with modified ones and everything should be okay.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by leonid (10/26/04 2:56 AM) | + / - | can you tell me where are 'pads " and how i can clean this?

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Donna (10/26/04 4:49 AM) | + / - | Rauks: Okay, if pads are the problem, then could use some help here. I too wouldlike to know where they are and what I can do to fix this problem? Any help out there if this is something we can try to fix? Where do we buy new pads?
|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (10/26/04 11:03 AM) | + / - | Leonid & Donna: There is an "EPSON C82 Disassembly Instructions Page", available to view at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/c823.html and an "EPSON C82 Error/Troubleshooting Page", available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/c82error1.html , that may be of some help, but you may still need a Service Manual, for any in-depth troubleshooting...JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and usually your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water, then dry them out and simply reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...THIS ADDITIONAL INFO MIGHT ALSO BE OF SOME HELP: Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...Unfortunatly, that "SSC Service Utility" does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems and sometimes will not even work on actually listed printer models, so you will have to check it out for yourself. Just in case that source does not work: You may actually need to go on-line to try and locate a "SERVICE MANUAL" or a "RESET PROCEDURE", to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals for most Epson Printers, from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=2_18 (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 /- ). You can also find most Service Adjustment Programs/Resets from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=1_56_50 ...The only other source for a FREE RESET PROCEDURE [that I know of] is one posted earlier by WES on this Printer Repair Site: www.resetters.com . Because that site is actually a Russian Site, it is of course hard to figure out. You will probably need to use sime type of TRANSLATION PROGRAM, such as "ImTranslator/PROMT Online", at http://www.paralink.com/ims/ , just to be able to try and use it...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: epson c82 problems by John (10/26/04 2:16 PM) | + / - | At least mine lasted through the warranty period & gave up when I replaced the black & cyan cartridges. After prolonged emails with Epson's service departments in the U.S & Canada, I got the name of a local service centre. When I 'phoned & told the service technician what printer I owned, he burst out laughing & said he knew exactly what the problem was...a broken vacuum pump...& he'd repaired about a dozen this year. As I have around a $100.00 worth of Epson ink cartridges on hand & the repair will cost $75.00, is it worth it? My old 740, at least 5 years old, keeps chugging along. I was planning on purchasing a Canon but the technician told me they had printer head problems but at least the customer could replace it.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by JEFF SHAW (10/27/04 10:23 AM) | + / - | Of the many points that are being made in this thread I'd like to throw in my 2 cents, from being an Epson Authorized service center employee for 4 years. 1. Some guy said that there are alot of people these days that buy an inkjet printer and think they are a "printing studio". YOU SIR hit a big homerun with that statement. Week after week, month after month of repairing printers both in and out of warranty I have so many ancedotal cases of people that buy a $60, $75, $80, $100 dollar inkjets that use these printers in their business that are printing hundreds of copies of photo's and greeting cards a day and they wonder why their waste ink pads are full after several months of non-stop use. I've had people call up and complain that their business is losing "thousands" of dollars because their low-end ink jet printer is not working correctly. That one makes me laugh the hardest. Most of these people are the same people that choose willingly to use 3rd party ink in their EPSON printers and clog the printhead thus ruining a decent printer. There are so many cheap skates out in the world that if they knew that by using 3rd party ink that their repair bill is going to be more than that C60, C80, C82 printer is worth they would have stuck with the original Epson cartridges to being with. 2. Most printer manufacturer's warranty are for ONE YEAR for an inkjet. You aren't buying an HP color laserjet for $500 dollars or more. It's a low dollar inkjet. Get a grip joe cheapskate. EPSON's in-warranty customer care phone support is one of the best in the business. During that year when your printer is in warranty and you have a problem you call them up, they exchange the defective printer for a new/refurb. one and they pay for shipping both ways. DAMN if that isn't great service. You aren't Ansel Adams, you don't earn thousand of dollars for those inkjet pictures of your kids at the family picnic, so get over yourself. YOU BUY CHEAP, YOU GET CHEAP! YOU USE CHEAP 3RD PARTY INK, YOU GET CLOGGED PRINTHEADS, it's that simple. But do you think the manufacturers of the cheap 3rd party ink are going to be upfront and honest about their quality. They aren't going to come right out and say "HEY, We know this ink isn't as high of quality of ink as Epson's and much sooner than later you're going to have a clogged inkjet and by using that 3rd party ink your Epson warranty is going to be voided"...nah, they aren't going to tell you that. What the "customer" thinks should last, and the actual performance of an inkjet are two different things. In this case, the customer is not always right. There are alot of people out in the world that are very dishonest about how much use a printer has had, and what type of ink they've used. The dishonest ones are the one's that are the worst customers to deal with. They make statement's like "It's never worked good right out of the box" and the printer has been used and abused, has 3rd party ink in it and with waste ink pads that are full. Yeah right, it's never worked good out of the box, and yet you've managed to rag the hell out of the printer. The life of a printer tech is filled with these kinds of customer horror stories.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Donna (10/27/04 1:39 PM) | + / - | Jeff: Okay, I see you point and could probably agree to a lot of what is happening. But, what about the honest people that have bought nothing but Epson inks to avoid headaches and have not used their C82 on a daily basis to print hundreds of copies of photos, cards, text, etc. Yes, I have printed photos, but sure not at the quantity you are referring to. I loved my C82 and had so many compliments on the quality of photos and still have a wonderful Stylus Color 800 that is working after all these years. I read reviews on the quality of the new Epson photo printers, but frankly, I am willing to spend the money for a more expensive model, but who is going to assure me that it won't be considered a cheap, low end printer next year when it quits working. I thought I wasn't buying a low end printer when I paid $140.00 for my C82.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by frustrated w/ ep (10/27/04 4:57 PM) | + / - | Another Epson tactic is to make the consumer feel it's their own fault the printer is malfunctioning. We underpurchased, we're cheap, we printed to many family photo's, we didn't print often enough, and it's always the ink - go buy some more and try and again. On page 1 of the Epson C82 Operating Manual under the heading Welcome! the first paragraph reads: "The EPSON Stylus C82 printer is the ideal desktop printer for business and home use. With its exceptional speed and print resolutions, it is practical for everyday use, yet capable of delevering when you need superior printing." Since this is how the printer is marketed, we as consumers should expect the printer to perform as it is marketed, regardless of pricing. Many of us are just everyday people who purchased new computers - at which time were introduced to this wonderfully advanced new printer that could do amazing things so we impulsed purchased without doing research. To me it's water under the bridge, but I do see the EPSON name come up in a lot more products than printers, they make a whole lot more than printers, and guess what - I make it a point not to buy EPSON products anymore.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by JEFF SHAW (10/27/04 5:16 PM) | + / - | Donna, WIth most ink jet printers the customer is caught in a Catch 22 situation. Let me explain; Customers are told that if they let their inkjet printer sit for too long of a period of inactivity the printhead can become clogged. If they overuse the printer at some point in time the waste ink pads will become full and for most customers that means taking that printer in for service. In my job position I've seen most of the recently released Epson printers that customers purchase. Over the past 4 years I've seen a trend in Epson printers. The older line of Stylus Color inkjets were very dependable and some of them are still workhorses for their owners. In the models C80, C82, and the multifunction CX5200 unit I've seen this trend; ALOT of the units tend to fail to print very shortly after their warranty period has expired. One thing that I've seen with alot of customers is their lack of knowledge about the most simplest of tasks when it comes to their maintaining their printer. The printer belongs to "the customer", it's their repsonsibility to maintain it, but when it comes to their understanding of running a "head cleaning" or "nozzle check" they usually don't realize how to perform these tasks until they are on the phone with Epson tech support. I've seen customers that bring their printer in for repair when all the printer needed was a NEW INK CARTRIDGE. That in itself tells me that some people, not all people, are really clueless when it comes to their printer. As a printer tech I don't expect people to understand the mechanical issues related to their printer, but knowing how to read the user manual, run printhead cleaning, nozzle checks, and changing an empty ink cartridge are as simple as it gets. The one piece of information that I relay to a customer when they ask me "what kind of printer should I buy?" is this; Most inkjet printers have a 1 year warranty. Knowing that you're getting a printer that is going to be covered for 12 months, and after that you might be looking at replacing that printer you as the customer have to determine what you can afford and how much money you're willing to invest in a printer that is covered by a 1 year warranty. When you go to Epson.com and take a look at pricing on their printers you'll see the range that the prices vary. For people that print mostly black text, I recommend they buy a dependable laserjet. For people that print graphics, they have to determine what are the most reliable/quality printers on the market and make the choice. Doing as much research that a person can by using the internet as a resource is a step in the right direction. There's no way I personally am going to give a customer an assurance that the inkjet with a 1 year warranty is going to be a working unit after that 1 year is over. People in this day and age seem to WANT someone's verbal guarantee on issues like this. An inkjet printer IS NOT a car. They just aren't designed to last forever. How are the manufacturer's going to be able to release new printer's year after year when they design printers that last indefinitely? If your C82 was working for 2,3,4 years from the date of purchase you'd never buy another printer until you needed one. I don't do the marketing, I just fix them.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Will_fight_w_Eps (10/31/04 5:30 AM) | + / - | I think the pad is a small sponge located under the resting place of the cartridge holder. You can get to it by moving the carriage over. To do this, find the little black lever located at the lower front side of the carriage and move it forward. Slide the carriage over. The sponge/pad is located in a small tray underneath where the carriage was. It is about an inch long and less than a quarter inch wide. It has little holes in it to hold it in place. It is easy to clean. But this did not fix my problem. I even saturated it with alcohol and left it over night, but you red and black nozzles are still clogged. I even tried forcing alcohol into the nozzle with a syringe, but no luck. Any ideas?

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Matt Nuzum (11/1/04 7:04 PM) | + / - | Hello, The arguements that the user is the problem are invalid. I have been a computer technician by trade and having worked at a printer repair shop (yes, even epson authorized) I've learned good and well that refilled cartridges don't pay. When I brought home my C82 I was thrilled with it's speed and quiet operation. I was replacing an HP 870 that had lasted 4 years. I visited CompUSA wanting to get the best "business class" color printer I could, under $500. I expected to spend in the $300 - $400 range. To my surprise, the highest end unit was the C82 at only $150. It looked like it met my needs and had one excellent feature that wasn't specifically on my list, the water proof ink. Well, after using it for a few weeks I was disapointed to find how often I needed to clean the heads. Apparently, leaving the printer on but idle for a few days is not good. However, I did run a moderate number of pages through the printer (maybe 20 - 40 per week) and was happy with the output. 13 months after purchasing the unit it stopped printing black ink. I replaced the cartridge and cleaned repeatedly. However, now instead of streaked output I got no black output. During the cleaning, the yellow ran out. I replaced the yellow and found that it to stopped printing at all. A call to technical support and a replaced magenta cartridge provided the information that I would need to send it in for repair. The tech knew exactly what it was and told me that changing ink wouldn't fix it. Thanks to the tips above I've downloaded the tool to reset my protection counter and cleaned out my waste bin. It was a mess in there so I have no doubt it was in need. Unfortunately, the printer still prints nothing but blanks. It is my intention right now that I will never buy another epson product. Despite HPs resolve to lower the quality of their products (adopting the throw away mentality others have adopted) they still aparently produce the most reliable machines for business class printing. If Epson wishes to reach me to try and regain my good wills, simply get rid of the word "REMOVE" (newz@bearfruitREMOVE.org) from my email address above and I'd be happy to discuss it. I'll document any information I find here: http://bearfruit.followers.net/12832 A few weeks after purchasing my C82, (still during the honeymoon period) I purchased a Stylus Photo 925. I wonder how long it will last. Unfortunately, it is much more costly to operate than the C82 so I don't use it much.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by chris (11/2/04 10:24 AM) | + / - | Our problem was not the c82 but the c60.The ink collection pad for this model is not a little pad under the cartridge resting place but a much larger pad beneath the printer so the person cleaning that little sponge pad is probably cleaning the wrong one. Also there is a resetting program you can download which must be used after the pad is replaced to tell the printer the pad is not full.I discovered all this from searching for Epson on this forum. My own problem is most likely the fact than I am not going to spend £50 on 2 cartridges every few weeks when I can buy another printer for less money. We have 4 lexmarks in my house, the oldest is about 6 years old.All can be refilled with cheap ink and all work without needing both cartridges. The print heads are on the cartridges.Although the cartridges are as expensive as epsons to begin with,I can fill each one at least 3 times and they are not chipped .The printer does not fill with discarded ink and need resetting.Epson has the thumbs down in this house and Lexmark has the prize.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Sylvia Clarke Fa (11/5/04 6:11 PM) | + / - | I bought my Epson C82 last year and was very pleased with the quality of prints. It has been used regularly but not heavily, and I have used only genuine Epson ink cartridges. A few weeks ago, the black cartridge indicated "low" and I bought a new supply of ink cartridges - two of each colour as I always like to have a spare on hand. To my surprise, when I replaced the black cartridge, the printer stopped printing. I ran the nozzle-cleaning process several times, thereby using up the yellow cartridge which I then also replaced. I thought the cartridges must have been defective, but the technician is telling me that the print head is bad. Just so? Now that I've seen the hundreds of bad reviews on Amazon and in fixyourownprinter.com I realize that I bought a lemon and then wasted a lot of money on ink cartridges. What a let-down from a company that I used to believe in.

|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by IFTY (11/8/04 8:27 AM) | + / - | That is the sad thing, some of the people want you to think that since it is a cheap printer, that it is ok for it go bad after 250 uses. That it is ok to make it shut down once the waste ink pad on the bottom is full, when all they have to do is make a warning message pop up telling you to wash it out, then put a pull out tray so you can easily wash it out. They want you to think you over used it, or under used it, it is ALWAYS YOU! THE CONSUMER FAULT! They yanked it off the market because there is a defect that they must not want you "the consumer" to know about! I bet that is the bottom line of this whole C82 being canceled.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Donna (11/8/04 11:39 AM) | + / - | 1. I would like the good advice with simple, step-by-step, detailed instructions that will definitely repair the C82. The instructions MUST be in a form that any home user can follow. I am not a printer technician and I am sure there are a lot in this group that won't even attempt to disassemble the printer without some good support. 2. If $150.00 is considered a cheap printer, then what constitutes a mid price printer? Such a waste! I was really an Epson fan. Why can't they just post simple instructions to fix this problem, unless there is no real solution. Seems to me it would get them a lot more repeat customers if they would help make lemonade from this lemon.
|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by Anonymous (11/8/04 12:03 PM) | + / - | I'm sure it is something more than just a home user being able to fix it. I also don't think epson will even act like anything is wrong with that perticular model because that will just require them to repair all the C82's at their expense, now that can't happen can it!

Epson doesn't want to tell me how to reset the printer but do a free exchange each time I have this error. | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (11/24/04 10:53 AM) | + / - | Sam: There is an "EPSON C82 Disassembly Instructions Page", that is available to view at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/c821.html , that may be of some help to you in at least removing the Top Cover Assembly [Page #27 lists HOUSING REMOVAL]. Unfortunatly, it does not actually show how to get to the actual WASTE INK PADS, so you may still need to find an actual Service Manual to use. You will probably need to use sime type of TRANSLATION PROGRAM, such as "ImTranslator/PROMT Online", at http://www.paralink.com/ims/ , just to be able to try and use it.....JUST SO YOU WILL KNOW: The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and usually your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. Just in case 2manuals.com does not have an actual Service Manual available: I would recommend that you go to the "Compass Micro Inc" web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm and check with them directly, to see if they have a Service Manual or Reset Procedure available yet for your printer. Several people have posted that they have manuals available for the newer printers, that are not actually available from other normal sources. I HAVE NOT CHECKED ON ANY PARTICULAR PRINTER MODELS, BUT HERE ARE SOME OTHER WEB-SITES THAT YOU CAN CHECK WITH FOR SERVICE MANUALS: You will have to check the following web-sites for availability [some may be able to order or locate Service manuals for you] and pricing: http://www.manuals4you.com , http://www.sm.copyprofi.net/index.htm , http://www.servicemanuals.net/(qxdgvu55gnxp1r55phmu5d45)/default.aspx , http://www.docteurtech.com/CAN-Import/can-import.html , or http://www.user-service-manuals.com/epson-service-manuals.htm ...Good Luck! They've dumped it in the corner of the shop and gone laser, they only purchased it a few month ago!!!!. I have a CX3200 from new.. 13 month....worse case of horse droppings ever!!! | Re: epson c82 problems by Jeff K (12/2/04 5:15 PM) | + / - | Well, I did find that my tube fell out of the bottom and spilled ink on the inside. My question is this: Is the tube supposed to be clamped on? The one connection has a clamp, but the one under the pad does not. Every time I try to connect it, it slides back off. How do I slide it back on to stay? Thanks

I am really annoyed and think that this is the biggest pile of crap on the plannet, do not buy EPSON. ITS NOW IN THE BIN, at least throwing it away does not cost anything!!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Allen Richter (12/3/04 1:37 PM) | + / - | I have a bulk ink system for an Epson C82 printer but something clogged on the printer and it won't work. I think the bulk ink system is find and that the problem is with the printer because it won't print even with regular cartridges. I bought the C82 printer refurbished and I think that is why I have had so many problems with it. The company I got the bulk ink system from (I paid $290 for it) has stopped making the bulk ink system - well, they said they could replace it for a C82 printer but I cannot find a C82 printer anywhere, so I bought a C86 printer thinking they could just change it out but they could not. So now I am researching the bulk ink systems before I buy another one since they basically screwed me. I bought the ink system in June and it hasn't been working since September so basically I wasted $290. I am not either the problem is my C82 or that bulk ink system. I was referered by my friend and got a very good CIS from http://www.InkRepublic.com for my C86. Now, I am very happy with my C86 with iINK.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by joe K (12/4/04 8:53 PM) | + / - | C82 not printing. I have my c82 apart on the workbench right now. Found the little tube under the cleaning head cup off. I removed that whole tray and rinsed it clean. When replaced, the tube keep blowing off. I secured it with a small tie wrap and now it stays on but still not printing. Spring from that tray took off for parts unknown so I'll probably replace it with small rubberband. Maybe running the cleaning cycle a number of times now might help?... I don't know. Am I on the right track or should I buy a new printer now and trash this one?
|
 | Re: epson c82 problems by Jeff K (12/6/04 3:52 AM) | + / - | Joe, I would suggest you find out what the spring does. I was able to find mine and put it back on. Once the tube was on, I cleaned with the kit I bought from here and now all is fine. Good Luck

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Joe M (12/6/04 10:37 AM) | + / - | I have a C82 and used cheap ink. Once the color printing stopped working right, I bought all new Epson ink. I used the software to 'clean' everything but everytime I print something in color, I get black and a very light blue. Any suggestions? I am ready to toss this thing. I admit I tried cheap ink but does that break the printer? Geeezzz.....

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (12/6/04 10:56 AM) | + / - | Joe M: Its quite possible thats its not actually the inks causing your printers problem. Read all the previously posted messagers & replies that are already posted on this MESSAGE BOARD, that you tacked your question onto and you will read about a very common Hardware/Part Failure in the "C82"series...JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: Unfortunatly, not all Generic & Third-Party ink & ink cartridges are made the same and none of them actually contain the right formulation of ink, for the Epson Printers [formula is patented by Epson Company]. Some are probably close and seem to be better than others, but some simply can clog-up or even damage the Printhead Assemblies on Epson Printers. Epson Ink Jet Printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks, especially the newer models made in the last couple of years. Its because the Epson Printers use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers. Most, if not all of the other manufactors, use thermal or bubble jetprint heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. Printer manufacters do not make available their ink formulation and in most cases, the formulation is patented. Any difference in the ink formulation can actually cause clogging in the small printhead nozzles or damage other critical components. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair, so you can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged...Denny Conway

 | Re: epson c82 problems by A. Kaufman (12/7/04 2:29 PM) | + / - | I'm the Network Manager for a small manufacturing company. I have been using a C82 for at least a year with no problems. I bought one for one of our employees. His crapped out after about 6-9 months. The black ink stopped printing. My time is too valuable to sit and f- with the printer to try and get it to work. So it's going into the trash and I'll replace it with an HP printer. HP sucks also, but their inkjet printers seem to work. Just don't ever find yourself in the position to have to call their Indian tech support.

I just blew $65 on a new set of ink cartridges (EPSON brand), trying to fix the same problem everyone here is having. If i had only waited until tomorrow, I could have just bought another printer, by a different maker. now I'm stuck with $65 in brand new ink.....what to do....... I'm going to try to disassemble this bastard and do some cleaning tomorrow. I have this feeling that I will end up making plastic mush out of it before it's all over with. I appreciate this thread and site. I can't wait to find the little EPSON sales guy at Best Buy...the one that sold me on the printer.....i'll make his day for sure!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Occasional Print (12/12/04 4:16 AM) | + / - | How terrible. I wish i had 250 prints from mine, it's more like 50 sheets and now it's dead. To the person who said "you buy cheap you get cheap" or something. How ridiculous - it shouldn't be in the shop if it can only print 50 to 250 sheets in its lifetime. That's not cheap, of course, at £1 or more per sheet. Of course i won't buy an Epson again. I can't spend more time on this - better to cut my losses and frustration.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Anonymous (12/12/04 6:36 PM) | + / - | Chose my C92 thinking that it was of reasonable quality for the price. Worked OK for 18 months. Used only EPSON cartridges. Now no black print immediately after replacing black cartridge. Printed 2-3 pages a week (usually black only). Left printer always on. Heads clean by themselves before each print--wasteful. Replaced cartridges 4 times since new. Observation: With price of printer and ink, average cost per page is $2. Solution: place printer in trash and buy anything but an Espon printer rather than disassemble per confusing instructions.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Phil (12/13/04 12:12 PM) | + / - | Along with many others, I have suffered from the C82 no print problem. Using the first link on Denny's post (thanks!) I managed to get the top cover off, then, with the print head moved across out of the way, found (like Ted above) that the tube under the cleaning mechanism had fallen off (no clamp to hold it on). Having got it back on (had to slide the assembly to the right and lift it out) and put it all back together again, the printer is working fine. Until this fault, the printer has been perfect, although the cartridges are a rip-off. Having looked inside it, I think the C82 is a very clever bit of design, but the lack of a clamp on the tube under the cleaning assembly means it can blow off if there's any dried ink clogging the pipe, causing an increase in pressure. I know these things are very cost-controlled, but another clamp like the one visible at the front of the printer surely could have been fitted? I'm not sure that this repair is going to be within the scope of many on this site, but if you're going to junk the printer anyway, what have you got to lose? It took me about half an hour to get apart, put the tube back on and re-assemble (that's the tricky bit!). Thanks Denny!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Rob (12/15/04 2:29 AM) | + / - | Well, I took the printer apart. That was probably more complicated than self-navigated open heart surgery. Could they have made the wires, tubes, and springs any shorter? I doubt it. My situation has improved, though, from 2 colours to 4 colour; but, the banding remains. Any suggestions? ;Rob

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (12/15/04 9:16 AM) | + / - | Rob: Either you have an actual Hardware/Parts Problem [failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly], a possible clogged Printhead Assembly, or bad ink cartridges, but no way to really know. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through the Home Page on "fixyourownprinter.com", at http://fixyourownprinter.com/ , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged Printhead Assembly. When it opens, click-on Epson, under PRINTER REPAIR KITS. Then click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" and that page should then open correctly. The Epson Solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again, but that will only help if they are actually clogged. It was basically designed by Epson Company for use on their older models of ink jet printers, but people have been using it on the newer models, with success reported. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never dissolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller Epson Ink Jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130. There is a REVIEW of the Printhead Cleaning Solution kit, available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (1/19/05 10:45 AM) | + / - | Branch: Unfortunatly, its turned into a disposable world anymore, even if we don't agree with it or like it. Printers were more expensive just a few years ago, but they were also built better and seemed to last longer. I know we get what we pay for, but it's still a shame...Denny Conway

 | Re: epson c82 problems by self (2/8/05 8:06 PM) | + / - | Read all messages. Interesting. I did like a lot of folks - bought for high perf/ low price. Like others also got many months of great service, at low duty cycle. And, like others, tonight dang thing just quit printing anything but blank pages, even though I am on original cartridges with 25% left. So, all those months of faithful, high quality work went down the bowl, as I cursed a blue streak about planned obsolescence. I downloaded the Ruskie's program, ran the super clean, checked the overflow tube (used a syringe to move ink daubs through it, reattached, ran a clean or two more, ran a test page - POOF - I am back in the black, for now it is working like brand new. Actually looks pretty well made in there, but the sudden blank pages clearly is an achiles heel they should have done somehting about by now. Like many designs, I'll bet with a tweak or two, fixing the shortcomings would make this thing a tank, but it is always the little things that get you.
Good luck to all, and thanks for the info, and comiseration!

 | Re: epson c82 problems by orkinman (2/19/05 9:43 PM) | + / - | truisms and falsehoods....
you have to take a hard look at what "most" of the Users are expecting out of these printers. these printers make awesome prints, which of course we would all love for home use. affording an expensive professional doesn't fit into most of our pocket books. I am a technichian and have done work for a photography shop which owns a $10,000 dollar printer, way out of our league, yet we want the same results for under $200. maybe we need to be realistic that if we have the occassional great pic of our kids than we need to bring it in a fork out a few bucks for a proffesional print.
where epson IS failing on these issues, not how long the cheap printer lasts, but how much ink it wastes. I've measured the volume that comes down the drain tube, they are INSANE if they actually believe that is neccesary. Also the counters don't measure the volume of ink left to ensure they don't dry out. they just count and shut down. I have opened a set of cartridges and they were all at different levels. If they actually measured, they should shutdown when a specific amount is reached.
so, granted that If we want professional- we should buy professional, but the all deceit from a supposed reputable company isn't neccesary.

Any ideas why this is happening??? I'm getting color, but white lines run horizontally (like TV interference) through everything I print.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (3/7/05 10:23 AM) | + / - | Pete: Either you have failing ink cartridges, or a partially clogged printhead assembly, or a failing printhead assembly. You need to first try running sets of "Printhead Cleaning Cycles" and "Nozzle Tests", to try and correct that problem. Unfortunatly, you may have to run up to 6 sets of printhead cleaning cycles and nozzle tests, to be able to get the ink to start flowing correctly again. Running a lot of those tests uses up a lot of the ink inside the cartridges, but you may not have a choice at this point. If that does not help, try actual New-Epson Ink Cartridges, to eliminate the possibility of bad or failing ink cartridges. If those don't help, then you might want to try using the "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution", available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged printhead assembly. When it opens, click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" thats listed for your particular printer. The Epson solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. If you remove the "Top Cover Assembly", then you can leave the printhead assembly parked in its normal home position, at the far right side. Then any ink & fluids that are purged during the cleaning, will normally travel thru the cleaning station hoses, to the waste ink pads. If you have the "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly", positioned away from the home position, then you will need to slide strips of paper towels or coffee filters under that assembly, to soak up any expelled ink and fluids, or it can get all over. Something about it charging the ink head to make it print and when it comes off.....blank pages. I would be thrilled if someone could tell me how to get the plastic case open and off so I could get to the bottom side of the ink heads. | Re: epson c82 problems by Denny Conway (3/30/05 10:30 AM) | + / - | Anonymous: "CIS" stands for "Continuous Ink System". Just in case you want to check it out: You can see some aftermarket information on the Continuous Flow Ink System by MIS Associates Inc, at "http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/cobra.html"...You might want to check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html. It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a Hardware/Parts Failure, but no way for me to really know. The most common failure seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, or simply happens during normal use of the printer. The most common problem found on some of the newer "C" & "CX" printers, is the tubing on the cap assembly becomes disconnected. The cap assembly can't clean the print head if the tube is detached. That information page may be of some help on your printers possible problem, if that tube has actually come off. I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about other peoples reports, just in case it happens to apply in your case...There is an "EPSON C82 Disassembly Instructions Page", that is available to view at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/c821.html, that may be of some help to you in at least removing the Top Cover Assembly [Page #27 lists HOUSING REMOVAL]...There is a free download of an "Epson Stylus Color C82 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson. That manual may also be of some help to you as reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing of your printer...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: epson c82 problems by frustrated w/ epson (4/14/05 5:28 PM) | + / - | I started this thread several months back when I was having problems with my Epson, I spent lots of money on ink and finally donated it to the local landfill. My family was pressuring me to get a new printer so I went shopping, putting my new found knowledge print heads, drain tubes, cotton waste ink pads and printer drivers to work. I soon brought home an HP Deskjet 3845, including ink, for under $100.00 from Circut City. The big difference between the two printers is the Epson ink jet is built in to the printer while the inexpensive, yet reliable HP ink jet is contained in the replaceable ink cartridge. As I remember, thats how my old Cannon printer was also (never had a problem with it either). My family and I have put this little printer through it's paces - (3) refills of ink and at least a ream of paper, printing everything from recipies, to color photographs. In terms of comparison this is a huge success! Good luck to all those who have worked, are working, or will soon work on their Epsons - look on the bright side, we've all become better consumers!!

 | Epson photo 925 cartrige fault by BAD BOB (6/19/05 8:38 AM) | + / - | I bought a EPSON PHOTO 925 today $ 10 at a computer car boot market . as I use a EPSON C60 with great sucsess , refill cartriges myself so far 90 + times for the black and the color cartriges . It has needed a few head claens at times ( mainly yellow wont print ) otherwite OK and I use the SSC reseting system with great sucsess . So I tried power to the $ 10 Photo 925 to be informed in the little widow that the PRINT CARTRIGES NOT CORRECTLY INSTALLED ( black TO26 color TO27 ) . Next I checked to find that each color & black was at least 1/2 full so I reset the chip on each cartridge with a reset tool and refitted the cartriges as per the printers instructions . Again the same masage PRINT CARTRIGES NOT CORRECTLY INSTALLED . So can anyone tell me if the chip on one or both cartridges is faulty will I get the INCORRECTLY INSTALLED MESSAGE . I also tried to reset the cartridges with the SSC Service utility to find that the PHOTO 925 cant reset in that way . As I am naw to this forum I welcome any Sugestions Thank you all Regards; Bad BOB

 | epson c82 waste ink system spring by lake_huron_is_cold (6/20/05 1:33 PM) | + / - | Thanks for all your info on this site. Very informative. One small problem: when I disassembled the waste ink system (it was so gummed up with clotted ink that it needed to be completely washed out), I failed to note the position of one tiny spring. The exploded diagrams and disassembly instructions don't touch on the guts of the ink pump, wiper blade, etc., and I've no idea where that little bitty spring goes. It's got one 1 1/8" arm that zig-zags like a lightning bolt, and the other arm is much shorter, about 11/16". The two arms form an angle that looks to be less than 90 degrees but greater than 45 degrees. I'm not sure that the service manuals out there are going to show where the thing goes. Can anyone help? Thanks a BIG bunch.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by KH (9/29/05 8:47 PM) | + / - | I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've been successfully using my C82 for over a year, maybe two years before it gave out. My problem is that now I can't buy an Epson printer with parallel ports and my Windows 98 computer doesn't have enough RAM or a strong enough Pentium Processor for even the "throw away" printers. So I thought to find a used C82 (refurbished) that I could at least use my remaining ink cartridges in. Now that I read all these problems I guess I should count my blessings. However, I really would like a good quality color printer that I can use with my old computer. Any suggestions?

 | Re: epson c82 problems by sawcat (10/7/05 8:31 AM) | + / - | I've also had good luck with mine. Got it in the fall of 2003 and only just had problems with it. I've changed the yellow tank twice, and it knows they are new ones, but it's not printing the yellow ink. using the head cleaning cycles don't help, and it's only ever had epson brand cartridges. Anyone have any ideas on what it is?

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Anonymous (10/30/05 8:23 PM) | + / - | I have a C80, but no matter, it's all the same.
Much like most of the good folks that contributed to this thread I am sitting with a nice pile of new ink cartridges and trying to figure out why this thing would print well. Yeah, mine prints, with bands and missing colors. I finally came across useful information about how to take the thing apart, and after a day and a half I have the thing completely disassembled and my hands completely black and they will probably stay that way for days.
And you, Jeff, tell us that we are cheapskates and stupid because we use our printers to print. Up yours man! I left my email, you can respond. It's 11 PM and I had better things to do today, but I feel like defending the folks who are not only screwed by your great company but also insulted by you.
We buy a product and expect it to function. Your arguments are helpless. A product, any product needs to adhere to a level of quality. You sell a printer that cannot be used as a printer for any longer than a year, it cannot be left alone for any extended period of time because ink will dry out, it cannot be heavily used because wasted ink will accumulate, etc. This is a poorly designed product.
I write software for a living and can tell you that in software it's all the same. There is good software and there is crap. And it doesn't event take that much more to write good software, just like anybody who opened this printer up could see that it was PURPOSEFULLY made that bad.
We all know why. So that you could sell it cheap (relatively!), make up the difference in ink by needlessly filling your waste pads, not let people replace the waste pads and force them to buy first a whole lot of new cartgidges and then a new printer.
You (Epson) can do all this because the other guys are just as bad. Just like the airlines, just like the banks, just like cars.
This has nothing to do with how cheap we are and everything to do with how you want to extract our money from us by doing the least amount of work.
The standard of living is decreasing, and you may laugh at us now, but you'll remember this when you get screwed by a mortgage banker or a used car dealer, who will also think that only a cheapskate would buy a $300K house these days.
NO SIR to you, it is well within technical capabilities of Epson to make a high quality lasting printer for $100 (made in China by the way?) as many people on this thread pointed out (their old Epson printers).
I work for a company of 20 that outperforms worlds biggest banks and can do for 1M what they failed to do for 12. Don't be telling us that designing printers is rocket science, at least not until you're higher up the food chain that customer support.
My wife hardly ever used the thing in the two years after she bought it. The waste pads look like something exploded there, with rocky buildup of costly Epson ink. This was obviously maldesigned on purpose.
Technical notes:
That cold water mentioned WORKS! It doesn't look like you need to waste your money on any cleaning solution + shipping. Try it. Those pages on how to take it apart are very useful! Looks like you can take it completely apart and clean. That disconnected tube (mine wasn't) surely can be responsible, but don't give up, once you get to it, it will be easy.
There is no majic there, it's plain mechanics. Since your other option is to throw it out an get screwed by Cannon or HP on your next run, what have you got to lose?
Good luck.

 | Re: epson c82 problems by DragonLogos (6/6/06 3:50 PM) | + / - | OK I am going to give you all a IMPORTANT tip - and this applies for most Epson printers... Do Not do back-to-back head cleaning, ie if it's not printing nicely, do not clean the nozzles more than twice, the reason for this is the ink cannot flow from the cartridge fast enough
Rather leave the printer overnight and try again the next day. Doing back-to-back printing is just going to waste your money and ink, it will also fill your ink pads up, and take you one step closer to were your red and green lights flash, which means your ink counter needs to be re-set, as Denny correctly points out the best place to get the re-set program is http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe
If the printer still prints blank try the cleaning solution he talks about - Do Not use Tap-water, only use Distilled water
Epson printer head design is in many ways technically superior to other printers, and I think for this reason they put the Chip onto the cartridge as a means of generating sales. I have a few old epson printers that are working great, and get re-filled with non Epson ink, I know there are lots of people out there that have experienced the same. BTW there is no such thing as universal ink, so if you do re-fill make sure you get the right ink from someone that knows what they are talking about
What boils my blood is how a company can make such great printers and then stick a IC on there cartridge, then charge a small fortune for what is really just a plastic ink tank and about 10 ml of ink - ohhh and do not tell you not to do back-to-back cleaning
Ideally as someone else pointed out, if you get something like the R300 and fit it with a CIS (Continuous ink supply) which is like six bottles of ink sitting outside the printer, and then also catch your waste ink in a bottle rather than having it go into the ink pads. You will have a great system, you could also use the waste ink as black ink for one of your older printers. If it sounds like hard work then maybe someone can see a gap in the market and start putting these things together for others

 | Re: epson c82 problems by Jamescase10 (6/14/06 10:47 AM) | + / - | No no no no no!!!! EPSON SUXS. I threw away 3 epson c84s and everyone clogged. Even daily use. Also, it wastes ink everytime you turn it on. I believe its the durabright ink. And the paper feed barely worked. And often would jam. No matter what, if you print like 50 pages, its going to be found stuck somewhere in the 50 pg cycle. You call that a good printer? HAHA. Proud owner of a HP1100d Business inkjet. cost 90.00 And HUGE cart and have disconnected the wire to the exp cart issue.

 | Re: epson cx6400 problems by Anonymous (6/18/06 8:43 PM) | + / - | Hello all. I am glad I found this thread. I was trying to help a friend of my parents with their epson printer. It would print nothing but blank pages. I spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong. He needed to print badly so I said I would give him my sisters printer that she wasn't using. (epson cx6400) I hooked it all up and tried printing him a page sure that it would work. It printed out blanks as well! lol Luckily I found this thread before losing too much sleep over it. And I just got my sisters printer working. That black tube that pumps (good) ink into the hidden tray wasn't worth cleaning so I just let the ink fall into the visible tray and it works fine. I can't believe that a company would do this. I realized today as clear as day that epson has about as much shame as a drunken prostitute. I could not believe how much ink was in that tray. My parents friend went through $60 of new ink and whatever he had initially just doing diagnostics that tech support recommends. They should have recalled all their printers but I imagine the integrated printing heads made for good talk with the investors with dollar signs in their eyes. Needless to say I will never again buy an epson printer (I don't think I would even buy a pencil from them now) and I will instruct anyone aking my advice to do the same. Both of the printers I'm working on take the same cart's so I'm going to print pictures with one and text with the other and then ill let them share ink. That will be the final chapter in horror story that is Espson. Bye Epson!

 | Epson C82 problems - Wanted - Cartridges by RobertR (6/23/06 4:12 PM) | + / - | I will buy your unwanted cartridges for my C82 if reasonable. My C82 is O/K after cleaning the pads and resetting the counter. I realize that most of you either have better things to do than disassemble your printer, or that you are not technically inclined. You are the normal people in life. I am retired, and have the ability to fix the problem.
If you would like to donate your cartridges, I would feel obliged to reimburse you for the postage (USA only).
Sorry to hear that so many of you have had misfortunes with your Stylus C82. And I thought Ford vehicles were bad.
