I am having trouble with a Canon S600 BJC. It will onlr print colors. It will not print black on anything except an alignment page. Any ideas?

Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anita (9/26/04 5:27 PM) reply + / -
Hi Dave,
I am having the same problems after deleting the old printer drivers and installing new ones for canon, and after alignment..can only print in color not black..did you ever get a response on this?

Re: Canon S600 BJC by david (9/27/04 6:54 AM) reply + / -
No, I never heard anything about this.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anonymous (9/27/04 3:28 PM) reply + / -
Have you tried printing a test page and see if there is any black in it? also tried a self test when the printer is on, hold the resume button down for two flashes of the green light then release, the printer should print a test page, in the test page the first set og grids are black. If there is no black in the first grid, then the printhead might be clogged, so you might try some deep printhead cleaning from the maintenance tab in the driver properties.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by david (9/28/04 6:56 AM) reply + / -
I tried the test pages and the deep cleaning. All of those tests failed miserably. I even tried cleaning the print heads with alcohol. That did not work either.

I tried looking on the Internet for replacement print heads and could not find any.

It appears that the problem with my printer is that by replacing the black ink cartridge it bke3 fixed the problem since the printer had not been in use for several months and the black ink dries up much faster than the color inks..

I have tried everything. I have been through several black cartridges. Anyone have the answer to the missing black ink or know where I can buy a new printhead?

Thanks

Try taking a paper clip and punch a hole in the top of the cartridge then blow a little air in it. Does the ink come through?

Got the same problem. ARGH

Re: Canon S600 BJC by anita (10/24/04 2:47 PM) reply + / -
After putting a new black ink in computer, I still had not luck with test page printing in color. I called Canon technical support 1-800-828-4040 and for $9.95 we walked through the testing. Since it was an internal problem with the printer I did not have to pay the support fee since they could not resolve the problem. Others may want to try this -

The replacement printhead for an S600 is
QY6-0034-000. You should be able to call a Canon authorized service center to purchase this printhead. MSRP list price is $48.95.

The company I work for has this printhead in-stock. If you cannot locate one in your area, email me and I can give you the details on purchasing one. My company does have this printhead in-stock and available for purchase.

I have a problem with my S600 that is sort of similar to one I see repeated here where folks cannot print black. I can only print black, no color. I have updated and reinstalled my driver, aligned, cleaned, deep cleaned, and checked ink levels. Perhaps these problems may be related. I'd love to hear any thoughts on this. Thanks, J

I had same problem, just took out the cartridge holder and ran hot water though the heads until it ran clean, working good now.

Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anonymous (3/25/05 8:33 PM) reply + / -
Same problem, cannot get black to print except on test page. Last week it was fine. I tried the hot water trick, still nothing.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by slag (3/30/05 5:16 AM) reply + / -
I had same recurring error, 7 orange flashes. Alcohol cleaning did not work for me. But I did leave the printer unpowered overnight (pulled AC cord), and the next day the printer started working normally.

Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anonymous (3/30/05 5:50 AM) reply + / -
I'll try it today---it's actually been unplugged since I tried using it. I did order a new print head from Canon. Including shipping it was around $47.

Re: Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by anonymous (4/12/05 5:48 PM) reply + / -
Did you get it resolved by replacing the print head? I am having the same problem.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anonymous (4/12/05 7:30 PM) reply + / -
I received the new print head but haven't had time to put it in. Accountant---tax season....Will try it on Saturday the 16th.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by anonymous (4/13/05 8:29 AM) reply + / -
Thanks. Well, I just ordered one anyway - because the Canon service tech said that using cheap inks would clog it up for sure, and, I've been ordering ink online for a couple years for like $3 a cartridge. Supposedly, the Canon inks are a proprietary formula that don't clog the head as easily..! Guess we'll see..!

Re: Canon S600 BJC by anonymous (4/13/05 3:32 PM) reply + / -
Accountant, can you let me know if the new print head fixes your problem? My black ink does not print either; I have yet to try all of the suggestions listed here because a computer tech took a look at it and already suggested that I get a new print head. Nonetheless, I'd rather not spend the money on it if it doesn't work for you. Do you think Canon realizes that this is a recurring problem, perhaps owing to the poor quality of their merchandise? If so, do you think that they would finance the print head purchase? Thank you!

Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anonymous (4/13/05 9:03 PM) reply + / -
Hi, Sorry, haven't tried the new print head yet......still working on the 40 or so tax returns on my desk. If I actually get out of bed on Saturday, I will install and let you know if it works! I think if all of us with Canon S600 printers with this problem emailed Canon at the same time, they may do something. But, since the print head did not set me back a huge amount, I probably won't worry too much about it. Remember, these printers are a little on the old side.
If you try the hot water trick, use tongs to hold the print head, and very hot water. Be careful. I do this alot with the print head on my S400 that I use for printing cake toppers (ink is food coloring)

Re: Canon S600 BJC by hfs (4/14/05 3:57 AM) reply + / -
I have something for you all to try. If you're getting some black when you print the print head alignment test sheet, then you might like to try messing around with different print head alignment settings.

I have been fiddling with the settings for an hour now. The first time I set the black columns to as low as they would go, and when I did another print alignment test I got some results. Text appeared, and although it was smudgey it was something! I tried to align it a bit better, then I lost the text again :( I think that's the cause of it by the sounds of your descriptions. Let me know if you have any luck.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by msc-formerlyanonymou (4/14/05 7:39 AM) reply + / -
Have only been getting blue on alignment test. Nothing on text prints. Tried everything above. Funny thing was it happened so fast. Was printing - then suddenly not. Tech support says the ink openings in the printhead are microscopic and easy to clog with cheap ink? Of course, they reccommend using only Canon ink. Google search came up with $64 to $95 replacements. Ordered thru Canon parts at 732-521-7230 for $51, tax/shipping incl. Part # for S600 is QY6-0034-010. Hasn't arrived yet. Printer is over 3yrs old. I'm just hoping the rest of the machine holds up after replacing the print head..!

Re: Canon S600 BJC by anonymous (4/18/05 2:08 PM) reply + / -
Has anyone tried their printer on a different OS other than XP? I am having the same problem with my S600. Very strange considering the Maintenance program can print black but anything coming from the Computer refuses to print black.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by msc (4/18/05 6:48 PM) reply + / -
UPS just delivered the new print head. Installed it - and immediately - it works like a charm. Old one was apparently clogged up beyond the abilities of alcohol or hot water..!

Re: Canon S600 BJC by jz (5/2/05 6:22 PM) reply + / -
I just had a printhead clog as well. Symptom: 1 green flash, 7 orange flashes. Canon USA advises replacing the printhead.

After 4.5 years, I can't complain. Thought about replacing the printer, but my boys like it and with Computer Friends ink, it's awfully economical to run.

So, with nothing to lose, I pulled the head, removed the ink tanks, and held it upright under running hot water, so the water was directed thru the ink path. After a ten-minute bath (hey, nothing to lose, right), I dried it off carefully, reloaded it and it's working again.

trying now to unpower for a while and then, if nothing helps makeing a printerbath :-)

Re: Canon S600 BJC by Jeffrey S. (5/17/05 4:39 PM) reply + / -
I have the same problem as everyone else it seems. My black ink only works while printing a test page. I will try all of your suggestions and hopefully will not have to replace the head.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by Vivek (6/1/05 10:33 AM) reply + / -
I tried running the printhead under hot water for about 5 minutes, dried it, tried to print, no success. Ran it under hot water for 10 minutes, still no change. Color prints fine, but black just would not show up at all. Finally I let the print head sit in alcohol over night, but still no success.

Caved in a bought a printhead from Canon parts ($49 total, w/ shipping and taxes). Installed, and everything is back to normal. It sucks but hey, what else can I do... its served faithfully for about 3 years, but I guess that is the disadvantage of cheaper ink-tank-only consumables as opposed to whole-head-replacement like HP does.

Lift your grey lever on the right next to printhead, pull printhead out and remove all ink tanks.

I am having no Black and Yellow ink printing thru Printhead. After reading all the postings, might just try the hot water run thru. Just want to know yours working now?

> Lift your grey lever on the right next to printhead, pull printhead out and remove all ink tanks.

Well, Duh!! For some reason, I was not even seeing the grey lever, and thought that I somehow needed to remove the entire moving carrier. Thanks for pointing out how much *easier* it is to just remove the printhead!

I'll try to do this over the weekend, and let you know if it made any difference.

Tried the hot water trick. No difference. Still no black.
Reinstalled the drivers, [twice], cleaned and deep cleaned the print head. Even bought new ink carts. Still no difference.
Pls send info on where to purchase new print head.
Thanks, Bill

Can someone tell me the process to clean the print head by water or by alcohol? I'm having the same problem with 7 orange flashing lights, and I'm not technically savvy at all. It appears there are some delicate-looking parts on the back & bottom of the print head. I don't want to ruin them.

Andy,
remove the ink tanks, take the print head out. Hold with tongs (on the sides) Run hot water thru place where ink tanks sit thru the ink path for about 10 minutes. Let dry.
It may not work.

Hi Guys,
I just picked up an S600 with plenty of spare ink.
I'm also having the 'no black' problem.
Although mine prints no black at all.

I have a question though.
When I look at the Printer Status it says, The following cartridges are installed. Colour.

As I've never seen this printer functioning normally I wonder if the contacts are dirty and the printer thinks the black cartridge is missing....

I've looked at the print head and can't see how the printer knows that the ink cartridges are installed. ie. no sensors etc.

Clues anyone ?

Cheers,
hippy

Re: Canon S600 BJC by hikergene (9/14/05 8:47 AM) reply + / -
I had the non-printing black problem, and after reading this site tried the washing technique. I noticed that after the hot water had flushed out most of the ink, there continued to be a very fine stream of black coming out of that nozzle, so I continued to run the water until it stopped; about 12 minutes. The re-installed head now works fine.

Two comments: The problem arose while I was away from home for a few weeks, and the printer not in use. Since I live in a dry climate, I suspect the head just clogged up. Also, I have been using Canon's proprietary ink (at high prices!) since I bought the printer 3 years ago, so I don't think we should be blaming cheap inks for the problem. Hope this helps.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by Britt-o (9/27/05 2:43 PM) reply + / -
First of all, I was so happy to find all of your suggestions helpful. This problem of being unable to print black (esp text) really does seem very common in the canon s600.

Seond, I've been unable to print black (esp text) for a very long time, but read your comments and decided to try hot water. I ran the print head under hot water (I used hot tap water and several rounds of near boiling water from a kettle) for well about 30 minutes. I alternated the water flow between the inside and outside of the print head, which really seemed to chase out the ink. It often seemed like there was no more ink flowing out, but by playing around with the angles and intensity of the water, there was always a little more ink to push out. Finally, after 30 plus minutes I put the print head back in my printer and it works marvelously...for the first time in about 1.5 years.

There's more stubborn ink in there than you think! Just keep the hot water flowing...

Re: Canon S600 BJC - excess ink under print head by MAM (10/18/05 6:57 PM) reply + / -
I cleaned the print head because of ink spots appearing on printed pages. Thanks for the many tips.

The ink continues to accumulate excessively on the underside - quite quickly I might add - and the ink spots also continue to appear.

It appears to be an excess of ink flowing. I've only used the manufactures replacement cartridges.

Any suggestions?

Re: Canon S600 BJC by 000al (11/19/05 2:57 PM) reply + / -
i work in remaning inkjet carts, this info might help.
use a flat piece of tissue and press on the bottom of the printhead.
if u see nice foot print - lines of coloured / black ink on the paper and the head test shows colour / bits are not printing then its an electrical fault not a blockage.
if some lines of ink are faint or not there, u can flush the head manually with deminralised water.
flushing a printhead wont kill it, touching the contacts on the back of the printhead (static electric) will kill them. or if u damage that flat cable it wont work.
dont use solvents to clear the jets because the print heads are held on with glue.
if you see patterns of missing jets on the head test printout then it more likely to be an eletrical fault. blockages are colours missing or random jets blocked.
if flushing dosnt help then try reverse flushing, where u draw liquid up though the printhead.
the idea is that small particals slowly get though the filters in the printhead. we want to flush them up out of the pipes because they wont go though the tiny holes on the head.
put a set of genuine inks in when trying to fix your head, you might find its the old cartridges.
for electrical problems you might want to try cleaning the gold pins - contacts on both the printer and printhead with isopropanol, can be bought from a chemist for 5 quid 0.5litle bottle.

I have also had a problem with my s600, but not that the black doesn't print, but it is that some of the words print out unreadable or the lines are jagged. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by irid3sc3nt (11/26/05 3:42 PM) reply + / -
My printer started getting bad that way-- with lines all through the text. Now it doesn't print text at all. I don't have the flashing lights, though. I tried rinsing with hot water (which flushed out a lot of ink) but it's still printing the same way. I'll try the hot water for longer this time and then decide after that.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by irid3sc3nt (11/26/05 4:04 PM) reply + / -
my addendum: It prints in color perfectly well. It will only print black on the print head alignment (but then the yellow doesn't print in the alignment test). I wouldn't think it would be a print head problem since the other colors print well. I'm going to try a new black ink cartridge. Also, my computer gives the same info that hippy1970 wrote earlier "Print Status. The following cartridges are installed: Color" My printer had quite the hiatus over a summer break in college over a year ago and when I used it again, the crappy text happened, etc. etc.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by 000al (11/27/05 1:13 AM) reply + / -
one of my printheads, all the colours work fine, but just some of the black dosnt print on the head test.
its a pattern of jets, flushing dont help, so its electrics that are dead.
if you lot post a scaned picture of ur head tests i might be able to help.
anyone know a place u can buy second hand printheads lol?

I've been monitoring this help page since April 2005 - when I had a problem with my S600. Without fail, every person who's replaced the print head has remedied their problems. A couple of people have been fortunate enough to fix the problem by flushing/washing with water or some other fluid... but the ink jet openings are so small that once clogged - it's VERY difficult to blow them out clean again.

Cheap inexpensive inks are what clog up the print head after a while. Unless something else is wrong with your printer besides the print head being clogged... just replace the head for about $50 and be done with it. It's like getting a new printer. I did so back in April of this year and have not had one single complaint about my printer since.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by 000al (11/30/05 11:09 AM) reply + / -
any blocked printhead is fixable, i work in a ink company fixing them all day.
the bci 3 range of carts are pigmented inks, tiny bits of organic matter.
after a while some larger bits pass though the filters and get lodged in the tiny holes down in the printhead.
If you reverse flush the head, u flush those bits backwards the way they came and really does fix these types of canon heads.

if the pattern of jets blocked dont change, no matter how many times u clean then its proberbly an electrical faliure.

WHY BUY A NEW PRINTHEAD??? they cost more than a new printer thats a beter spec.
canon make them exspensive so u buy a new printer.

if u buy a new printer get ones that take the bci6 range - dye based inks, much beter photos. or the latest canons have chromalife inks (100 year) but the cartridges are chiped so it will be few months b4 the ink / chips are copyed so u cant really refill without disabling the ink monitor software.

My problem is that I have to use light weight photo paper to get my printer to work. (Less than 10M). Anyway, now I'm having trouble with 9M paper. It jams everytime. I tried deep cleaning, etc. Help. The photo paper just won't feed thru?

Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anonymous (1/6/06 4:04 AM) reply + / -
Sounds like the paper feed rollers are not gripping. can normally be easily cleaned with some kitchen towelling/cotton bud and some isopropynol alcohol. The rollers accumulate paper dust and dust in the air which over time gives them less grip.

I think you'll find refilling the chipped carts and reusing them (without any replacement chip or fully working reset) will also store information in the printer stating that the cart has been reused and will invalidate the warranty. I have seen this on the ip4200. A warning messages asking for confirmation of acceptance if using a refilled cart appears. Unsure if any of the rest of the cli8 inktank based printers do the same but I would assume that would be the case seeing as the 4200 is the lower end in the current pixma range of machines which use those carts.

Also have the one green, seven amber light indicator. Printer will not respond to any commands in Maintenance so I can't say "Color prints fine but Black doesn't." Did anyone else get a failed to respond message? I did remove the printhead and the bottom is rather gummy and nasty. I have not tried a hot wash since I was concerned about the contacts on the back. Would the failure to respond to cleaning commands indicate a different problem? Also, what about the contacts on the back? Thanks for any advice you could give before I flub up royally. lol.

I just got a new QY6-0034-010 printhead fron Canon delivered for $51.11. I had all the classic symptoms of missing black print as all the above here. Tried it last night and at first it was great. Then, it started missing lines, skipping partial line print, in general not performing very well. I haven't run the cleaner cycle yet...didn't think I needed to.

Any thoughts?!?

Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anonymous (2/28/06 2:25 PM) reply + / -
Hi Scott.

Maybe you have already solved your problems, but still. I had the very same problems. After reading the other comments, I thought "why not try" and took out the printer head. Removed the inktanks and rinsed the head in running tapwater, first cold. Then hot, until no ink came out anymore. Then put the entire head in a bowl of hot water for about an hour. During these actions I had the power plug taken out.
Then , after about 1 hour I rinsed the printerhead again with running hot tapwater. Both ways, up and down, in and out.
I dried the head with towelpaper and gave it a chanche to dry out for 5 minutes.
I put the head back in its place with the inktanks in it, put the power back on and...IT PRINTS LIKE NEW!!
And I always use the 'replacement'-ink which is a lot cheaper.

So this washing really does the trick!

I can only say thank you for the marvellous idea. It really works.

Greetings from Holland,
RobCaspers.

I just dug out my s600. I gave up on it a cpl of years ago when it was dropping lines all over the place. When I took out the head it was amazing it printed anything!
There was so much dust and little hairs all clogged up with black ink. I had never cleaned it at all. Trying out the blast/bath method atm will post results.
Amazed to find this much info on an old printer!
thx

I had the same problem that is repeated in this thread. My printer also would not print black. I've had my printer for a little over 5 years. One main difference is that I always used Cannon ink cartridges, and still developed the problem. So using cheaper ink cartridges isn't the problem. I tried the water method and unfortunately it did not work for me. I ordered the printer head and installed it last night. Wala my printer is back to normal. I really appreciate everyone's input, without it I would not have know the fix was as simple as buying a printer head, I was contemplating buying a new printer, or taking it in to a repair place, I'm sure by knowing the problem and installing it myself in the long run I've saved some bucks. thank you all.

I was so happy to find this thread and all the success
stories about cleaning clogged print heads. So I thought
I had found the answer to my prayers and went happily away
to rinse my print head with cold water first then hot water
from the kettle. Cleaned both ways and dried the head.
All this while the plug was out on the printer.

Finally installed the head back, loaded the cartridges and
turned on the printer for my moment of reckoning.

The result: Nada ! Zilch ! No go ! Oh what a disappointment!

But as a persistent perseverer .. I am going to try again
this time I am going to let it sit in a hot bath for an hour
before giving it a second flow rinse and see what happens.

If nothing, then I guess its time for a new model printer.

Wish me luck!

I also had problems with my s600, but mine wouldn't print at all.
I replaced the print head and now I get a dark charcoal grey, not black and some very faint magenta and cyan, no yellow. I am SO frustrated! I thought the print head replacement was going to take care of it.

From my nozzle check, my "C" pattern for the red ink looks like a comb... solid across the bottom, but spiked at the top, missing alterate steps. Similarily, the fine line pattern for the red at the top has alternating missing half stacks.

Has anyone seen this? I assume it's something electrical, and one of the bits for the red is not getting through. Would this be seen with clogging too?

I've cleaned the electrical contacts and pads, and none seem to be bent, but can't seem to clear it up. Is there anywhere online that tells you which of the signals are for which colors?

THRILLED with this thread. I took off the head and cleaned it with hot water for 20 minutes...and ta-da! Working great. I usually use Canon ink, but on occasion used cheaper ink. The black was GUNKED on. Gross.....Canon only from now on.

thanks so much!

Remember to periodically clean the wiper station under the printhead assy on the right side. Pet hair, ink, & dirt accumulate. Access it with power on and opening the lid, pull the plug when carriage moves left. Gently push it more left to make room. CAUTION! The wipers are delicate and can be dislodged or pushed down in. Use a damp (not wet), lint free towel or a "Q-Tip" with a foam head. Power back on.

Jeff,
Thanks for the input. My S600 blinks 1 green and 7 ambers. I downloaded a manual & the only since I can make out of it is that I need the print head.
I have purchased so many ink cartridges that I need to get this printer back in service.
Please give me the info I need to order one asap.
Many thanks,

I'm having this comb like look in the red ink also. I just cleaned the head (it was doing this before i cleaned them)and have new Canon ink cartridges. Also when I do a nozzle check the black patches are half dark dark green.
I'm willing to buy a new head but I hate to waste the money if that's not going to fix this particular problem. Test pages look good and I even printed some pictures today but got a faint green line on one side. Any help is appriciated. Tammy

Re: Canon S600 BJC by Anonymous (10/15/06 7:04 PM) reply + / -
I had the "no black ink" problem, and in reading all the comments on it, I tried the hot water treatment. I have to say that my printer head was seriously caked in with black ink. I had to literally peel a huge scab of it off the outside of the head, and when I did, I thought "Great, that was the problem all along", unaware of what must have been on the inside. This printer is at least five years old, I've never cleaned it before, and I had not used it in quite a while. I soaked it in a pyrex measuring cup in water that was probably 150 deg, then ran it under the hottest water the faucet could produce for several minutes and then dried it throughly and tried it. No improvement. I did that again, and also used my compressed air tank with a nozzle the size of the black ink screen to blow out all the moisture. I noticed that black ink came out the other side. After drying it, I tried it again, and this time, I got the slightest amount of black to print. I went through the hot water drill following it up with the compressed air again and again, probably five times throughout the day, and finally it worked. It works as good as new. I think the key is just letting the thing soak and soak in as hot a water as you can keep it - eventually it will all melt out.

I just want to report another success with cleaning the print head with hot running water. I didn't submerge it, I just kept running hot tap water through both ways until it ran clean. I was getting a flashing yellow light and now its fixed. Thanks for this thread!

Over a year ago, I noticed "black" ink in the yellow tank and just thought I'd mistakenly refilled it. However, today, 6 months after fitting a new yellow tank and working perfectly since, the yellow tank is again now "black".

I also just ran the print head under water, dried it and blew it out with canned air to get all of the water out. At first it didn't work (7 orange lights still), but after removing the print head with the printer turned "ON" and reinserting it, followed by holding the reset button down, it recycled and printed a test page. Its working fine now. Now, for a way to get the ink off of my fingers... :-(

In desperation, after the printer indicated it needed a new print head, I tried the hot water flush. It Worked! Left it overnight to dry, loaded the tanks, tried it out--no, same thing.

Later that same day, turned on the computer, and apparently because I had ordered a nozzle check and forgot about it, the printer came on and printed! It's working as I write; wish me luck.

My printer is a Cannon S600. My printer head or the piece that is supposed to move, wont. I turn it on and it makes a weird noise and just sits there. I open the lid and it still sits there. I can't even turn it off and move it manually. The light blinks 4 times, my ink tanks are all new, and just before I printed out a sheet. Whats the solution?

Re: Canon S600 BJC by VTprintuser (3/1/07 11:07 AM) reply + / -
I recently contacted Canon about my S600. It seemed to print greenish colored black and white image photos when I had selected grayscale. The images were also very pale --washed out. This seemed odd:

1.) Grayscale shouldn't print in any color than black, if selected.
2.) Increasing contrast by software did little to help the density problem.

Canon wrote back: Change the paper type to "Plain Paper" and print again.

I did -- apparently the other paper type selections print in a grayscale using the color inks to create the grays. Only "Plain Paper" uses the black ink to print grayscale.

Now for the greenish problem. A nozzle check seemed to show all colors printing. BUT, look at the magenta pattern C on the nozzle check sheet. It is a double row of alternating magenta stripes. I only had a single row -- the lower row was missing. This means some of the magenta print jets aren't firing, though others are.

This is a deceptive problem, because the ordinary user sees a magenta pattern and assumes that the magenta is present. Because we don't know what the pattern is supposed to look like ( a double row not a single) we assume it is okay.

Another telltale indication that a color isn't printing completely is the pattern at G and H. These alternate the upper and lower jets of each color. Each block should look all gray. On my test pattenrs however, the lower part of each block prints green -- meaning the red is missing. The upper part is gray.

One way suggested to clean the print head without running water through it (from alotofthings.com) is to heat a wet paper towel in the microwave for 20 seconds and set the head on it for 2 minutes.

Never wipe or rub the jets.

The steam supposedly unclogs the heads with less risk than flushing -- which may just add tiny particles to the microscopic jets and make things worse. If that fails then the rinse could be tried.

The towel method didn't work so far -- so I'm about to try the rinse method.

By the way -- the reason for the pale green images was a combination of choosing a new paper type, not "Plain Paper" and the partially clogged magenta jets.

I also had recently installed the latest S600 drivers. I'm thinking about going back to my original CD driver, in case some of this is actually a software issue -- the plain paper requirement seems odd, and I don't remember having these problems before.

Re: Re: Re: Canon S600 BJC by VTprintuser (3/1/07 12:10 PM) reply + / -
Wrong. The S600 doesn't use chips on the cartridges.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by VTprintuser (3/2/07 7:33 AM) reply + / -
That last message refers to the user comments by anonymous on 1/6/06 indicating you'd void the Canon warranty if you used alternate brand inks because smart chips would report the substitution. The s600 does not use cartridge chips.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by VTprintuser (3/2/07 7:41 AM) reply + / -
The rinsing method did not clear up the missing magenta lower jets problem on my printer. Because it's so uniform, I believe the problem is damage rather than clogging.

I did try cleaning the print head electrical contacts with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol -- also the printer contact fingers very gently, wiping downward only, since they are hook shaped wires.

Letting this dry, I then replaced the heads, but now had the 7 flashing orange lights problem -- didn't have that before. Reseating the head a few times cleared this up, but still no magenta lower jets.

I've ordered a new print head. Found a source for $39 plus $9 shipping through froogle.com.

Re: Canon S600 BJC by Canon_user (7/3/07 1:37 PM) reply + / -
A foolproof solution: remove the print head, remove the ink cartridges, immerse the foam pads in the print head in lens cleaning solution (non-alcohol; it dries out the foam) for about an hour. Don't remove excess solution; just replace the ink cartridges and start printing again.

The problem is not caused by cheap ink, but may occur from an empty cartridge or from not printing for a while.

The colors are clogged. Remove ink cartriges, remove print head.
Inside of print head you can see each color, apply alcohol to each of the color outlets. Do not pour. You have to apply the alcohol to each color seperately. Take a q-tip to remove excess alcohol. Then try pushing down with q-tip. If you can push down with qtip and feel a slight give you have unclogged the outlet. After replacing the printhead and the cartridges, complete proper maintenance steps. If you cannot print colors, go through the above again.

Hello, I have the 7 orange lights flashing & 1 green.
Did the print head bath in hot water and it printed beautifully... just like new!

But, after turning the printer off for a few days, I got the same signal. Then I rinsed it, unplugged it, etc. & it worked fine.

After not using it for a short while I keep getting the same 7 orange/1 green flashes.
I will replace the head when I can...
But I am perplexed as to why it printed so beautifully and now it's stuck in that mode.

Is there a way to get the printer to reset itself... unplugging is not working.
Also, I am using an iMac with OSX and occasionally System 9, never had any trouble with running these.

I did uninstall & reinstall the driver in System 9 as that is the software I have. Is there software for OSX with the S600?

Thanks for any help.

When colours are coming out incorrect, check that the ink tanks haven't become contaminated with ink from the other tanks.

I thought something was wrong when I looked at my yellow tank and found it black! It may not be so obvious with other colours. Also, just make sure that you put the right tanks in the right place. Since mine was yellow & black, it wasn't the case.

I replaced the yellow tank and then proceeded to print just yellow to clear it out. Appeared O.K. but went back to it shortly after to find it all black again. Decided to buy an original replacement off eBay (which worked out quite cheap) and the printer's been fine since.

I do not get a printout anymore in Yellow. It did not take me long to discover what the problem is. In the back of the print head the resistors for each color can be seen. I took a tissue and wiped the windows. With a magnifying glass I can plainly see the my yellow resistor is burned out.

To all of you who have that black no print problem: Check the black window. With magnifycation you will see the silverey coils. They all should look alike. If that is your problem you will recognize it immeadeatly. Now to find a dealer that will sell me a printhead for $46.

Well, it was worth trying. I've had this printer a long time, have only ever used Canon inks, and out of the blue (or the cyan) got the infamous 7 orange flashes. Found this thread, which has been great reading, and tried all the tricks on it to clean and rescue my printhead. No luck. I don't feel it's worth replacing it with printers so inexpensive - disposable, in fact. The small supply of ink cartridges I have left for my S600 is probably worth more than the printer at this point. It was a great little printer.

I had the same issues here- an older S600 printer that was clearly trying to print, but producing blank pages. (I did try a new ink cartridge and that didn't work.) I purchased a new print head from Canon over the phone (part #QY6-0034) and it worked like a chart. Took 30 seconds to install. The $45 it cost prevented me from forking over $150-200 on a new printer.

I too like all of you had trouble with my S600 printing the black color only.... regular color did great.... I read the posts about running hot water thru the Print head..... I took mine over to the sink and washed it for about 15 minutes... I thought that I had all the ink out of it and proceeded to dry it... In the process i tried to bump it on my hand to dislodge some water I couldn't reach with my drying cloth and lo and behold more ink came out... I put it back under the water and started bumping it again,,, more ink came out..... I alternated putting water in it and bumping both top and bottom for another 30 minutes before I couldn't get any more ink out of it..... Dried it off and re-installed it in printer and now it prints like it did years ago.... for those that did wash it and didn't work... try this... may save you buying a new print head.... I couldn't believe how much more ink I got out of it by bumpimg it.... don't have to be gentle with it either. Hopes this helps.

iaretheone,... As you have just proven, sometimes it takes awhile for the hot water to begin to dissolve the old dried up ink. Lucky for you that you saw more to come out, and then really completed the task. Good job and congratulations on a job will done.

HI JEFF. I HOPE ALL THINGS ARE WELL WITH YOU. I CAME ACROSS YOUR POST AND THINK I NEED A NEW PRINT HEAD FOR MY CANON S6OO. THE TROUBLE BEGAN ABOUT A WEEK AGO WHEN I STARTED GETTING THESE BLUE HORIZONTAL LINES ACROSS MY PRINTS. I THOUGHT IT WOULD GO AWAY BUT IT GOT WORSE. THE BLACK INK STOPPED PRINTING AND THEN IT STOPPED PRINTING COMPLETELY. I GAVE IT A FEW DAYS REST AND PLUGGED IT BACK INTO THE OUTLET AND STARTED HER UP. WHEN IT POWERED UP I GOT THESE ORANGE FLASHING LIGHTS THAT NUMBERED UP TO SEVEN. I SEARCHED THE USERS MANUAL AND DISCOVERED THAT 7 ORANGE FLASHING LIGHTS MEAN I NEED A NEW PRINT HEAD. I TOOK THE PRINT HEAD OUT AND PUT IT BACK IN IT'S PLACE MORE THAN ONCE. AT THE THIRD ATTEMPT IT STOPPED FLASHING AND STAYED GREEN. I TRIED TO DO A PRINT JOB ONLY TO GET AN "OPERATOR ERROR". IT STARTED WITH THE ORANGE FLASHING AGAIN. I TURNED THE PRINTER OF AND BACK ON ONLY TO GET THE SAME RESULTS WHEN I TRIED TO DO ANOTHER PRINT JOB. I'M CONVINCED I NEED THE PRINT HEAD. IF I CAN GET ONE FOR CHEAP EVEN IF USED CONTACT ME. plushbabi1@yahoo.com

I have purchased canon BJC3000 2 unit since 2000 ,S600 & S400 2 unit since 2002.Already familiar with canon head trouble.Almost extrem solution already try rather steam with hot water(extrem = boil till near 100 celcius, wash with gassoline,Avtur,Thiner and other heavy chemical).
So my final opinion is "CANON INKJET PRODUCT IS SUCK,BETTER BUY HP INKJET PRODUCT CAUSE IS CHEAPER HEADPRINTER (cadtrige+ink in one price and can use with cheap in for several time)"
Sorry for my bad english

You are totally wrong. You destroyed all of those printer all by yourself. It is stupid to think you could "Boil" some very delicate electronics at any temperature, let alone, 100 degrees Celcius. I don't really believe you used the other things but somehow you forgot your military weapons.

You will find that HP ink for any of their printer is the most expensive anywhere in the world.,... and OH by the way, when you have problems with you HP printer, and you will,... Just where are you going to get parts,... and where will you find anyone to fix it for you.
