Getting remove and check cartridge error message. Replaced colour and black cartrige. Still displaying the message
Any help will be appreciated
Cheers

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (9/17/04 9:53 AM) +2 + / -
Verify that you have the correct cartridges. Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails, you may have a defective cartridge even if it is new.

Re: HP PSC 2110xi by Mike (10/2/04 12:16 PM) + / -
my psc has a small grey/transparent band that came out of place/track? The printer no longer works now and HP says they won't repair/out of warranty? HP says the band is an alignment band used for the ink assembly? What should I do? any advice?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/2/04 1:02 PM) +3 + / -
The band is the encoder strip and it allows the carrrige to determine it's position. The strip goes through a slot in the carriage and connects on the left to a springy hook and on the right a stationary hook. If the strip is installed correctly, it will not be deflected when the carriage moves. The case will have to be removed, an easy job.

PSC 2110, removing the case

1. Remove the rear access door and the rear panel. The panel is held in place by two T10 Torx head screws.
2. Looking from the rear, disconnect the three cables on the left. Take note of how the two ribbon style cables are plugged in because they can be rotated 180 degrees when replugged.
3. Open the printer as if you are going to change the cartridges, then release the latches on the left and right and the scanner will rotate upward and lift off.
4. There are several T10 screws (they are obvious) that need to be removed and the rest of the case, a top and the two side covers, will come off.

I'm not sure if I am having the same problem or not. When I installed my new color cartridge and followed the steps for alignment, it keeps giving me the "Aligning, Please Wait" message. It won't go away and the copier or printing aspect of it won't work until the problem is fixed. Anyone have any ideas? Appreciate the help. Thanks.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/3/04 11:14 PM) + / -
Did you remove the protective tape from the new cartridge nozzles? Does the alignment page have both black and color printing on it? Go to this web page and scroll down to HP PSC 2100 Series for a sample of what the alignment page should look like. There is also troubleshooting tips.

Re: HP PSC 2110xi by Mike (10/4/04 3:05 PM) + / -
Thanks Bert, but I couldn't find the carriage slot to put the encoder strip back? Please clarify

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/4/04 9:18 PM) + / -
The carriage is where the ink cartridges are installed. The slot in the carriage is in a direct line between the two mounting hooks for the encoder strip. Have you identified the hooks?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Mike (10/5/04 3:25 PM) + / -
Yes Bert, I found the hooks no problem, but the slot has somehow eluded me? Please specify? Thanks again!

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/5/04 4:16 PM) + / -
Install the encoder strip between the hooks and if the strip does not distort horizontally and vertically when the carriage moves, it is in the slot.

My printer won't feed the paper. I've been told the gears are stripped on the rollers? Can this be repaired

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/13/04 10:10 AM) +1 + / -
Is the printer making grinding noises? If so, spare parts may be a problem. If there are no 'evil' noizes, remove the rear access door and clean the feed rollers with a damp cloth. If that restores paper feeding, use rubber rejuventator.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Mike (10/14/04 6:53 PM) +1 + / -
I'm having intermittent trouble getting my psc 2110 to print. I have Windows 2000. When I try to print something, sometimes it goes to the printer queu and after a few minutes I get an error message. The printer just sits there. I have 2 USB ports and have swapped the cable to the other port and still have the problem. I used to be able to disconnect the usb cable for a few minutes and plug it in and it would work. For some reason this doesn't work as well as it did.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/14/04 10:20 PM) + / -
Uninstall and and reinstall the driver. I suggest downloading the latest version if you have a high speed Internet connection. Go here.

HOW TO REMOVE SCANNER GLASS ON HP PSC 2110

Hey, I just had to figure this out myself as the glass on my scanner broke during shipping. First, pop off the small control panel facing piece that you had to snap into place when you first bought the printer. After that, there's a small square opening just below the green and gray copy buttons. Stick a small screwdriver (or pen/pencil) into that hole and push straight down. While pushing down, you should be able to slide that whole grey control panel section towards the front of the printer. Once you slide that off, you'll be able to access the 2 screws (the screw head is some type of polygon--I used the tip of scissors to unscrew) in upper right and lower right of the scanner glass frame. Pull the scanner cover door off and remove the screw in the upper left corner. You should now be able to pull off the whole frame and clean the glass, taking care not to stress the control panels wires.

Beware though--my scanner is not working now. It grinds for a few minutes during startup. I'm not sure if it's something I did or if there's broken glass in there jamming it up. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bill Kunert (10/24/04 4:57 PM) + / -
There is also a U shaped latch in the center of the top cover that needs to be released with a thin blade inserted from the front. It can be seen through the glass with a flashlight.

My Printer is having a problem with its scanner. Whenever we turn the printer on it goes through its normal process and then after a while it will start making this repetitive jamming noise. We finally figured out that the scanner light goes to the far right and then merely keeps trying to go right hitting the side of the printer. I can't figure out what is wrong but It won't let me print anything until this problem is fixed. Any advice would be nice, thanks.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/24/04 5:08 PM) -2 + / -
Remove the glass and and clean the underside. The last two posts explain how to remove it. Also clean the mirror in the slot next to scanner bulb with a cotton swab.

Let me know if that solves the problem.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by glen (10/25/04 9:02 AM) + / -
How do I get to the mirror to clean it? Also my scanner bulb is broken. Can you buy replacement bulbs?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/25/04 11:04 AM) + / -
HP does not sell replacement scanner bulbs and unfortunately they do not currently sell the scanner assembly either. I talked one bold soul in going to this web site and getting the closest generic bulb by length and diameter. Select it from Tri-Phosphor RGB Lamps. With a little creativity he was able to use the bulb.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by James (10/26/04 10:25 AM) + / -
I've had this printer for about 1.5 years. Works great for the most part, but I always have trouble shutting down windows 2000 because the HP driver executables like to hang around in memory. I almost always have to go into task mgr. and manually shut them down. Not fun! Is there a patch or update that addresses this specific maladay. HP tech. support wasn't any help and I've called them several times on this since day one of owning the printer with no satisfactory results.

Re: HP 2100 Printer by Stacie (10/26/04 10:25 AM) + / -
The printer prints fine, but has started making sqeaking noises as it prints. I tried the option of printed paper feeding out the back...still get the same ear-piercing squeak.I have examined all rollers and wheels....all appear to be OK. What next?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Nancy (10/26/04 1:49 PM) + / -
I am getting white "streaks" of unprinted/light areas approximately 2 inches apart that go the width of the paper.

Anbody know what's causing that?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/26/04 10:24 PM) + / -
Stacie
There will be an accumulation of grease on both sides of the carriage where the rod goes through. Redistribute the grease on the rod and see it that silences the noise.

Nancy
You may have a cartridge that is running out of ink in spite of no warning on the printer.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by jon (10/26/04 10:40 PM) + / -
Bert, in case you didn't notice Stacie snuck in an HP laserjet 2100 in on you. Hey 2100, 2110 all the same, right? Stacie, try replacing the toner cartridge. That's the most likely cause of the noise.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Nancy (10/27/04 11:01 AM) + / -
Thanks, Bert . . . but evidently that was not the whole problem.
I put in a new cartridge, and it did help take the major streaking away, but now the printer isn't copying as "sharp" as it used to on Fast speed. It's almost as if it has a slight wobbling effect . . . the letters are not all straightly aligned.
I cleaned and aligned the new cartridge twice.
Any other ideas?
THANKS!

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Carol Battin (10/28/04 1:57 PM) + / -
I really need help! I have a big project coming up.

After getting over the problem that the carriage wasn't able to move on the rod (that works now) I am really having problems.

I had been using referbished cartridges so changed to HP's. Still have problem. I tried printing a page of text that was typed in blue. One third of the page came out black and the rest blue.
It not only had a smeared stripe of black text toward the middle left margin but also a smeared strip of blue about a quarter of a page away from the middle on the right side. When I print a graphic there is a band of white stripes down the middle and double images down the middle left. All of these discrepancies are vertical.
I already tried downloading the latest drivers which were the same as on the disk.
What should I do?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (10/28/04 10:09 PM) + / -
It's difficult to precisely pinpoint your problem, so I going to take the 'shotgun' approach. Try these things in order.
1. Make sure the encoder strip is conntected on both ends. (I'm working on a Deskjet right now that had the strip disconnected on one end and some how it continued to print. Needless to say there were some strange printouts.)
2. Clean the encoder strip on both sides with a paper towel and a mild cleaner.
3. Do a reset: Press and hold Cancel and the Left Arrow while plugging in the power cord.
4. Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with alcohol and a cotton swab.
5. Test the cartridges in another printer. The 56 and 57 cartridge set is used in many newer HP printers.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Carol (10/29/04 1:29 PM) + / -
Thank you, Bert! I took my printer apart, cleaned the encoder strips with very diluted Mr. Clean and reassembled. IT PRINTS BETTER THAN IT EVER HAS!!!!!

Is there a replacement power supply for the psc2110. Mine has quit working and I have pulled the power supply and checked the output and it is 0 VAC.

HP does not currently sell the power supply as a spare part. If you want to take a gamble, this parts machine with unspecified problems is for sale on eBay.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Dave (11/9/04 8:51 PM) +1 + / -
I have a similar problem, and apologize if I overlooked the answer above. I just spent 3 hours with HP Tech Support and didn't get anywhere. Too bad I didn't find this site before I started.

Originally I was receiving the "Remove and check cartridges" error message. Replaced both color and black cartridge. Attempted to align the cartridges but it hung. I was able to print the alignment page and place it on the scanner, and hit Enter, but then the "Please wait" message then sat there for hours.

I was unable to Scan from the printer, print a test page, or color copy. I was unable to print from notepad either. I was able to create a b/w copy.

After getting off the phone with Tech Support and reading the posts above I decided to try some more troubleshooting on my own. I ran the clean cartridges (even though when I was on the phone Tech Support said it wouldn't help). I also decided to see if I could get scan to work using HP Director. I found I am able to color copy and scan from HP Director. I went back to the printer, and am now able to color copy, print a test page, and align the cartridges. (Because of the number of things I have tried tonight, I am not sure if the cartridge cleaning fixed all of those problems or if it was something with HP Director. Although my guess is it was the cartridge cleaning.)

So while I don't know how I did it, my only problem now seems to be that I can not scan directly from the printer. It says "No scan options set." I am unable to set those options from the setup menu, it says the software is not installed, but I think it is, since I can scan from the PC using HP Director.

Anybody have any ideas on the root cause of any of the original problems? I am very curious what resolved the problem. Anybody have any ideas on the scanning?

Sorry for the long rambling post. It has been one of those nights. Thanks.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Dave (11/10/04 3:48 AM) + / -
After a good night sleep, I was able to fix the scanning problem. I had to set up some stuff in HP Director. So everything is working. :)

If anybody has any thoughts about what was causing the original problem, I am still interested to hear it. Thanks.

I keep getting a message that says I need to clear the carriage jam or the print cartridge carriage is stalled. How do I fix it and why does it do this spontaneously?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (11/13/04 6:46 PM) + / -
The carriage rod may need to be lubricated. There should be an accumulation of grease on both sides of the carriage where the rod goes through. Redistribute the grease on the rod and see it that cures the problem.

If the problem contiues, there may be some useful information on this web page.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bill (11/13/04 9:17 PM) +1 + / -
When printing 2-sided booklets, the first side prints fine, but after turning the paper over, the printer frequently picks up two pages instead of one. Obviously, this messes up the entire booklet. What causes the paper rollers to pick up more than one sheet? We have rifled and faned the paper before turning it over. We used "premium" HP paper. Nothing helps. Is it the printer or the paper or the ink or ...... ???

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (11/13/04 10:27 PM) + / -
The problem is probably caused by the ink already printed causing the pages to stick together, or static electricity. I suggest allowing more drying time before printing the second side.

If you intend to do a lot of two sided printing, I suggest a printer with a duplexer. The paper is printed on both sides before it gets to the output tray. Repost if you want suggestions.

Need Some help. My printer has been giving out on me for the last couple of weeks and i think it finally gave up. The printer prints fine if i can get the paper to feed. The little grey tray that usually lifts the paper up(as i have watched it do when it works) has stopped lifting up. The rollers still roll just fine but the tray that lifts up the paper has quit. Ive remedied the situation for now by placing the exact right size stack of paper into the printer to allow the rollers to grab it but as you can imagine this is a pain. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by tycie (11/17/04 7:15 PM) + / -
thanks for your speedy response...it worked!

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (11/17/04 10:20 PM) +1 + / -
Jacob
I believe the paper lifter works the same way as many other HP inkjets. There is a sheet metal strip that you can't see, about 1"X2", that hinges on two tabs that does the lifting. It connects to a linkage coming from the left. Looking from the front, tilt up the printer and look toward the right rear. There should be two small slots where the tabs come through. If they are not coming through, the printer will have to be partially disassembled to put the lifter back in place. It gets dislodged in other models, probably when a paper jam is removed. I have a procedure for removing the case if you need it.

Tip: Always remove paper jams through the rear access door.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Ted5382 (11/18/04 6:49 PM) +1 + / -
After a paper jam on a PSC2100, my father inlaw pulled the paper out through the front. Now the carriage is stuck in one position (slightly left center), and I can't move it "by hand" without what seems like excessive force. I also can't remove the cartridges - the color cartidge release lever is blocked by plastic, I don't know why the black one won't come out.

I can't see any paper jamming the carriage, but of course, I can't see behind it.

Any advice?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (11/18/04 9:01 PM) +1 + / -
It will be easier to see what's going on if you remove the case, not all that hard.

4. There are several T10 screws (they are obvious) that need to be removed and the rest of the case, a top and the two side covers, will come off.

hi, my HP PSC 2110 has 2 problems.

1) a message keeps coming up on screen saying the "hardware wasn't installed correctly and it may experience some problems" -- i tried to reinstall the sfotware with the CD-Rom provided but the message still comes up.

2)I installed a new black ink cartridge and the LCD screen on the printer says to align the cartridge. I followed the instructions on the automatically printed page but in the last step (scan pattern) an error occurs. Then it goes back to step one over and over again.

Any suggestions?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (11/21/04 8:33 PM) + / -
1)Reinsert the CD in your computer and uninstall the software. A menu option should be available to do an uninstall. If it is not, check the program group created by the first installation for the uninstaller. Reinstall the software and follow the instructions exactly. Connect the computer-printer cable when the program tells you to.

2) If your alignment error does not go away when the software installs properly, go to this web page.

Help! When trying to clear the printer of a paper jam I tugged too hard on the black ink cartridge before realizing the latch was not all the way up.
A little black piece of plastic broke off the latch and now I am getting an error message stating "remove and check black ink cartridge"
because the cartridge is not being pushed all the way in. I've looked all over the net and cannot find a replacement part.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (11/23/04 2:56 PM) + / -
Finding a scrap machine with the same latch is your only hope, other than sending the printer to HP. The Deskjet 5550, for instance, uses the same latch.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (11/24/04 9:58 AM) + / -
Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol. The color cartridge will eventually run out of ink, even if it is not used, because a small amount of ink is used when the cartridges are primed prior to printing.

Cartridges can go bad, even if they have ink in them.

Connect the printer directly to a computer and see if it prints color. If the problem has to do with the print server, that is outside of my expertise.

On the top of the carriage and jutting out of the rear of the carriage is a black piece of plastic which interacts with a metal rail and controls how much the carriage can tip forward and backward. At midpoint of this rail is a 3-inch-long strip of metal which limits any tipping probably to keep the carriage locked during a cartridge change. The plastic of the carriage had gotten wedged under this middle strip! Forcing the head a bit away from the center fixed the problem.
I would say for anybody else, if your PSC 21x0 carriage is near the center, not jammed by paper, but cannot easily slide back and forth by hand when the power is out, and seems tipped back of horizontal, you probably have the same problem.
Thanks Bert. Yours was just the info I needed to keep this perfectly fine printer out of the land fill.

Sometime back my HP deskjet printer quit. My printer repairman told me the belt was wore out and HP no longer supports parts for that printer (882C). I could not stand the thought of junking a fine printer with nothing wrong but a worn out belt. It took about 3 weeks of hard work but I now have my printer back on line and a source for a kit to fix the problem. My question is how do I market the kit?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by CuriousMike (12/1/04 9:10 AM) + / -
My problem: Printer sends out "Open door. Clear carriage jam." message.

Reading this thread, I thought this might be it:
"Install the encoder strip between the hooks and if the strip does not distort horizontally and vertically when the carriage moves, it is in the slot."

Per your great directions, I removed the the top/back of my 2110 and discovered that, yes, my 1 year old had managed to disconnect what I think is the scanner strip.

It wasn't clear to me where to run it, but I ran it sorta "behind" the print head and it hooked on to the "sorta springy hook thingy."

I'm not convinced it's right; it seems really loose... and I'm still getting the same error message. (Having the printer "apart" didn't reveal anything else obvious.)

Suggestions?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (12/1/04 5:21 PM) + / -
Does the paper feed before you get the paper jam error? If it does look into the printer at a low angle so you can see if the carriage moves. If the carriage moves, do you see a blue light come on momentarily? If the paper feeds and the blue light comes on, I suspect that the optical paper sensor is not working. The blue light in conjuction with some optics is looking for the paper. To put in simply, the printer may be saying, "I know the paper has loaded but I can't find it, ah, a paper jam."

Hi,

Bert I was wondering if you could tell me how to clean the mirror and scanner bulb and where they are located in the machine.I Already took the machine apart and cleaned the underside of the scanner glass but I keep getting these fine vertical lines on the left hand side whenever I scan an image. I know the lines aren't coming from the glass because I cleaned it so I'm thinking it has something to do with the scanner bulb and mirror. Please give me detailed instructions so I don't mess up my machine I've only had it for 1.5 years.

Thanks

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (12/2/04 12:45 PM) + / -
The bulb runs the length of the scanner head. You can see it come on when scanning. The mirror runs parallel to the bulb. Clean the mirror with a cotton swab.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by K (12/2/04 1:28 PM) + / -
Bert,

I cleaned the bulb and tried to clean the mirror but I still see 2 vertical fine lines (about an inch apart) on my scanned image. I don't know what else to do to get rid of them. Do you have any suggestions as far as what could be causing this?

Thanks

Bad Scanner?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (12/2/04 8:27 PM) + / -
Bert,

Do you know how to remove the scanner calibration strip so I can clean it? I already took the scanner apart and cleaned the glass on the inside but the strip has a lot of dust on it as well. The scanner calibration strip is glued to the glass on the inside between the lid and the glass and I don't know how to get it off or how to lift it up just enough to clean it without messing it up.

Thanks

My 2110 has begun to loose it's density as it prints. What I mean by that is that it seems to begin printing fine, but the farther down the page it gets, the lighter it gets. I've tried a new cartridge. No change. In the mornings, the 1st print is the darkest, and they get lighter as the day goes on. Any suggestions? Other than the dumpster?
Thanks...K

You may have to get a new scanner glass (P/N C8644-60020).

Keith
It sounds like the cartridge is running out of ink. It's new but may still have problems. Was the old and new cartridge out of the same batch?

Thanks for your response. Do you know where I can purchase the scanner glass and will it come with a calibration strip already attached? or Do I have to buy the strip separately?

Thanks

My Hp psc 2110 all-in-one printer for the most part has served me well for 2 years. But something that is a reoccuring problem is the paper gets jammed creating either a paper jam or locking up the print cartridges. Then I probably make things worse trying to fix it. Two things I noticed 1.) It happens allot when I am using feature that prints pages on both sides of paper...and 2.) When it jams there are winged type flaps where the paper slided through and I think this is what is jamming it. Paper scruches up on the left side and the other side tries to continue but of course it can't. Scrunch...and my last nerve is screeching again....then everything jams There has to be a better way! Anyone else have this problem and is there a easy solution. Laura

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (12/5/04 9:17 PM) + / -
Remove the rear access door and clean the large rubber rollers with a damp cloth. If that helps, use rubber rejuvenator.
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kkx3.html

Always remove paper jams through the rear access door to avoid damaging the mechanism.

Thanks Bert. Just goes to show how the simple things can get the best of you. In hindsight, I realize that BOTH my cartridges must have run out at the same time, (what are the odds of that happening???) giving the effect of fade. I replaced both, and everything's fine.
Thanks for the tip...K

My Current Theory
Does the paper feed before you get the paper jam error? If it does look into the printer at a low angle as the paper is feeding, and see if the carriage moves. If the carriage moves, does a blue light come on momentarily? If the paper feeds and the blue light comes on, I suspect that the optical paper sensor is not working. The blue light in conjuction with some optics is looking for the paper. To put in simply, the printer may be saying, "I know the paper has loaded but I can't find it, ah, a paper jam."

Strange problems w/ 2110. by Mika (12/10/04 12:17 PM) +6 + / -
I've a problem printing anything with PSC 2110.

I turn the unit on, and most of the time it initializes just fine. Every now and then, quite at random, it will make a horrible repetitive sound, which seems to be coming from the scanner. It seems as if the scanner light is ramming against the right side of the scanner. There is nothing I can do to stop this other than turn the unit off with the On button, or pull the power cord.

But even if the forementioned behaviour does not occur, the printer simply will not print. It does not matter what software I use, the document is sent to the printer and according to the printer status window in XP, it is 100 % sent. Meanwhile the printer just says "1 Copy - 100%" without making any sounds at all. It just sits there. Nothing prints out. Sometimes 10 minutes or more into the waiting game, Windows will report that there is a problem with printing the document.

I am not sure what to do. I've tried aligning the cartridges; 2110 will print out the alignment page correctly, with all expected colours etc. But it won't scan it. It gets stuck at the alignment process at this point.

The printer cartridges are brand new. I cannot find an obvious physical flaw. I've tried all versions of the driver software, nothing has worked. I've tried downgrading Windows to 2000, temporarily - didn't help. I've applied the firmware update - nothing has helped.

I am at my wit's end here.

Mika
Make sure the computer-printer cable is good and connected securely. Try running the printer on another computer. Clean the underside of the scanner glass. If none of these things solve the problem, perhap it is time for a new printer.

Mary
Uninstall and reinstall the printer software. The program group created when you used HP's installation disk should include an unistaller. If reinstalling fails to solve the problem, I suggest downloading the lastest version from HP. I hope you have a high speed Internet connection because the file is huge (166 MB).

Thought I'd post a follow-up on my issue.

I had tried resetting the printer by holding down Cancel and Left Arrow while plugging the power cord in. This had not worked.

What did work, though, was resetting to defaults from the front panel menu. I don't know why, but the printer has been printing perfectly ever since then, for days now.

Thought I'd share that, as I know it is one thing people don't always think to try.

I recently spoke to someone who fixes printers for a living, and he had a PSC 2110 in with the same problems as mine. He said he had not even thought of trying to reset to defaults via front panel menu. Meaning that not even the experts always think of everything to try, so try everything you can think of before you pay to have it fixed.

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers. If the power problems did do damage, its time for a new printer. There are no schematics available.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (12/15/04 12:55 PM) + / -
Remove the color cartridge and gently clean the print nozzles with a cotton swab and water. Also clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol. If neither of these help, you probably need a new cartridge.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (12/17/04 1:03 PM) + / -

The blue light comes from the spot sensor. The spot sensor is the bulge on the right side of the carriage and includes the light and a photo sensor. The only part available is the carriage board, P/N C6487-60003, which the spot sensor is attached to. I don't know whether the carriage board, spot sensor, or main electronics board is at fault. The carriage is held together by four T10 Torx head screws accessable from the front. As I recall, the spot sensor is attached to the carriage board with mechanical contacts. Check them for poor contact; possibly some kind if contamination.

Speculation
Not many parts are available for the PSC 2110. Perhaps the reason the carriage board is available is because of failures. The spot sensor consists of the light and a photo sensor, i.e. it's a simple device. The light is solid state so it's life is at least 100K hours.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (12/17/04 1:14 PM) + / -

The PSC 2110 has soft power, i.e the power switch does not interrupt power but rather takes the printer electronics out of 'sleep mode'. Typically the power supply always outputs DC when plugged in. Check the power supply output. The voltage should marked on the power supply somewhere.

If you have DC out, the main board or control panel is defective. The last time I looked, the main board and power supply were not being sold by HP.

Hi. HP PSC2110 gave up the ghost. Got a little spastic about turning on, then finally was a total no-go. Narrowed the problem down to the small circuit board directly behind the keypad. No power, zippo, nada. Hours on the phone with HP for naught, and am now in search of the following part or assembly. Part #C8644-60180 (the board) or the whole assembly, part #C8644-60026. If anyone has a junker they would be willing to disect, please let me know. Would rather fix this than toss it.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (3/22/05 10:03 PM) + / -
Unistall the printer driver using it's uninstall utility if you have not already. If you have and the reinstall is still not working, I suggest unistalling the driver and then getting all of the critical IE updates from Microsoft. Go to the Tools menu in IE and select Windows Update.

I assume you have checked for viruses with up to date virus definitions.

If the printer still refuses to work, I suggest downloading the latest driver version from HP.

If that fails, it may be difficult to unravel the problem without reinstalling Windows 98 (after backing up all critical data of course). I don't know why IE comes into play when you run Director but perhaps installing Firefox and making it your default browser will solve the problem. Never heard of Firefox? Bill Gates has and he doesn't like it invading his 'private turf.'

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (3/28/05 3:03 PM) + / -
Perhaps the USB connector has a poor solder connection to the electronics board. The board will have to be removed to tell for sure. If so and you have soldering equipment, the repair should be easy.

If the USB connector is broken, most likely the printer is scrap because HP does not supply spare boards.

My 2110xi suddenly stopped working, displaying "Remove and check cartridge" in the LCD. I removed and cleaned the contacts w/ no result. As I rarely print with the unit, the ink level should be near full. I have heard HP has some sort of timer circuit in the cartridge, that takes the printer off-line when that point is reached. If so, I hate to have to keep replacing full cartridges with newer full cartridges just for the privilage of scanning and sending faxes! Does anyone know if the timer theory is true?

Hi, I have the same problem as some others in this forum: My scanner keeps pulling itself "back", eventhough it is already as far back as possible. This means that it keeps trying to pull he light back, and the printer won't do anything else.
Have tried reseting, both via the front panel and cancel + left arrow, nothing worked. Furthermore I have tried unplugging the different sources in the scanner (the light, the power and so on) and nothing worked. If I unplug the scanner part, the rest of the printer just doesn't respont although it is initilizing just fine.....

Any good ideas? otherwise I'm thinking about replacing good old 2110.....

Clean the underside of the scanner glass.

PSC 2100 Series, removing the scanner glass, by Bill

"Using a small screw driver pry off the control panel cover from the end nearest the display. Using the screw driver depress the tab found in the square hole under the panel and slide the panel forward to remove it. Remove the two star screws exposed by the panel removal and the screw near the rear right corner of the printer. Look through the glass with a flashlight at the center front of the printer and you will see a U shaped tab sticking down from the top cover that engages a projection on the main cover. Using a thin blade inserted between the covers push the U shaped piece to the rear and carefully lift off the cover. There is a ribbon cable connected to the circuit board on the cover. Just slip it out of it's connector. Be sure to note it's orientation. You can also carefully clean the scanner mirror with a Q tip is it is dirty."

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (4/12/05 1:22 AM) + / -
I am unable to print properly from my PSC 2110. I will try to explain what happends when trying.

When turning on the printer it makes a rather unhealthy sound for just a sec. Like cogwheels snapping out grip.

When trying to print from any application the printer takes in a paper sheet but then stalls for a long period of time. After a while the printing application reports that the document was not properly printed.
After a few minutes the printer display turns into the progress bar with 2 blocks lit on. This is a normal behaviour though it takes slighty longer timer :-) and nothing actually outputs from the printer... yet. I left the printer in that condition for quite some time, and when I returned my print-job was completed.
The job was a black/white excel sheet, but the actual output seems to be printed in colors. The print is rather black in the upper left corner but then fades out to light blue both horizontally and vertically. As if ink are running out.

The HP PC-software does not indicate any problems regarding the printer.

I have not been getting any messages regarding empty cartridges, at least not that I know of. This issue regards any type of print whether its a testpage, normal application print, scan/copy or allignment.

Is this just a matter of replacing cartridges, both or just one of them, or is this a defect in the printer, maybe a replacement of printer instead ??

Thanks, MSA

Putting it on Ebay by Andrea (4/18/05 7:46 PM) + / -
Hi -

After unscrewing, unscrewing some more, and then unscrewing some more... I have decided the printer will go on Ebay to the bravest soul who can take it apart and get their own frazzlin' pieces. It's all back together (to be honest, I was only 7 screws in when I gave up...). Anyway, it is only right that all you hard-working do-it-yourselfers know it's available. It is practically new - I bought it then took a job on the road and never used it. The on/off switch got persnickety and then died. Probably less than 100 copies printed. My husband is an ET and he's gone over the entire thing at that small board right behind the buttons is the only thing wrong. Looks new, everything works find and dandy. I may even have the original box to put it back into. It will list Tuesday 4/19 and end Sunday 4/24 on a five day auction. Just do a search for PSC2110.

Happy dismantling :)

Since you've had it under a year, I suggest calling HP Tech Support and they may replace it. Have the date of purchase and serial number handy along with some patience. The support people don't know any more than their computer tells them after they input the symptom you describe. If you get long pauses in the conversation it's because it takes a while to input and read the approved reponse to your problem.

Hello Mika,

I've the same problem with my psc2105. The printer worked fine for 3 years, until now. Restoring the defaults seemed to work fine for a vey short time, but now the printer makes the same horrible noises again at initializing. It seems to me, the problems started when I used a memorystick on the second USB port for the very first time.
My question to you: did your printer problems also began after using some extra USB device (eg a memory stick)?

I've refilled a black #56 ink cartrige several times with excellent results. I attempted to refill my wife's 5500's #56 but the printer wouldn't accept it (lights kept flashing). I put the cartrige into my 2100 and got the message "Error:Incorrect cartrige installed." I tossed the cartrige and put a new one in her printer. Her printer now works. I put MY cartrige back in ther 2100 and got the message: "Error:Incorrect cartrige installed." again. I've cleaned everything to no avail. Any ideas?

Did you read my response to Cecilia? You can bypass alignment by pressing and holding the Setup, button, and then press Options (or Copy Options).

Hello Mc GyverZ,

I've had the same problem with my psc2105 as MIKA described (horrible noises at initializing, coming from the scanner).

The printer is running fine again until now, but I carried out a 'coctail' of actions: resetting the printer (Power on in combination with left arrow), resetting to the deafults by using the setup function and deleting the 'USB Printing support' in the device manager. After rebooting my PC, the USB ports were detected, and my printer was running fine again. I really don't know which action did
the magical thing.
My problems with the printer started after using a memory stick in the second USB port.

My question to you: did your printer problems also began after using some extra USB device (eg a memory stick)?

I see several posts on this topic, but have yet to come across a solution that works.

I am using HP cartridges 56 and 57, not a psuedo brand.

Print quality was deteriorating, so I replaced the black cartridge. Worked fine for a couple of weeks, then got the "remove and check black cartridge" message. So, replaced the black cartridge again, but continued getting the message.

Color cartridge has not been replaced.

Contacts on both cartridges and printer have been cleaned.

Continued getting the error, so went the the HP site for troubleshooting assistance. Completed all the suggestions but nothing has worked.

Sought technical support, they had me:

Perform a semi-full re-start.

and then

Install a firmware update.

The the same error message persists: Remove and check black cartridge.

Other ideas, anyone? Thanks much.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (5/21/05 11:30 PM) + / -
There is a possibility that the carriage electronics board has failed. I would test the cartridges in a known working machine before passing final judgment.

My HP PSC 2110 is not feeding paper at all. I am thinking that someone at home removed a jammed sheet by pulling the paper through the front and dislodged the lifter. Can some one provide instruction on how to open up this printer and put the lifter back to its correct location. Much thanks.

Re: HP PSC 2110 wont print by Edmundo (6/1/05 12:57 AM) + / -
When I send a print job from a Windows application, including the printer's own test page, the printer just pulls a single page through without printing on it.

If I print directly from the scanner ie a black or colour copy it prints perfectly.

I have un-installed and reinstalled from the disc and un-installed and installed from the latest driver.

HELP!!

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Edmundo (6/1/05 5:47 PM) + / -
I installed the HP 550c driver as the HP site suggested and the printer prints perfectly. Appears to be the psc 2110 software.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I am faced with a stubborn "Remove and Check Cartridge" error.

When it first appeared I had just embarked on a big copying project (copying old family letters to send to elderly family members--time is running out!) The machine was copying merrily and then suddenly refused to carry on, it only displays this message.

I thought the problem was with the black cartridge (i found a way to tell on the HP website, which I now can't relocate). I followed all the directions about removing, cleaning, unplugging, replacing both cartridges to no avail. Finally I ordered a new black cartridge (even though I knew this one was not empty).

The same message is still appearing. I've been unable to print for days and have no further idea how to get this printer going again.

Any help would be welcome, thanks.

Jane

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Siobhan (6/7/05 5:28 PM) + / -
hi. I am not sure what the problem is with my printer, mostly because I am not even getting an error message, but it has stopped working. It was working fine this morning when I was printing and scanning, and then this afternoon, it would not print. When I send the item for printing, the screen says it is printing, but an hour later, nothing. I checked to make sure all the wires were connected properly, and even tried doing a copy, but to no avail. I turned it off, and when I turned it back on, it seemed to keep going through the initialisation stage, then started crunching really bad. I am not sure what else to check for. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol.

Siobhan
Does the carriage move when you open the printer to access the cartridges?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Siobhan (6/8/05 10:27 AM) + / -
Hi Bert
just checked it, and the carriage does move. It sounds a little rusty, but nowhere near as bad as the sound the printer was making when I turn it on. I tried scanning last night, and the scanner works great, it is just a problem with the printing and copying. Initially I thought it was a problem with the information going from the computer to the printer, but as the scans are transferring, I am guessing it must be a technical thing with the printer. I am clueless at this kind of stuff, so thankyou for any solutions you may have.
Regards
Siobhan

Hi Bert,
I just noticed something else, which is probably not a big deal but I thought I would check. The printer is a '2110', but my husband has all the software in the computer for a '2100'. Would that make any difference as to why it keeps playing up?
Regards
Siobhan

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (6/8/05 4:12 PM) +1 + / -
The noise could be caused by a broken service station (extreme right). The carriage is driven by a toothed belt that makes a grinding noise when it slips. Turn off the printer and try to move the carriage by hand. If it is not locked in the service station, the service station may be your problem.

The software is probably correct, and regardless, it wouldn't cause the printer section to make strange noises.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Siobhan (6/8/05 5:05 PM) + / -
Thanks Bert
I'll get that checked and then hopefully I'll have a fully working printer again. Thank you for your help.

My printer and copier on my psc2110 work, but when I try to scan, it tells me that an error occurred communicating with my scanning device and to make sure it is connected properly and try again. Dear Bert,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately this still didn't make any apparent difference. The printer still says the same thing: "Remove and check cartridge." As I said earlier, I have also tried replacing the black cartridge.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by habanagold (6/12/05 9:22 AM) + / -
I am having the same problems. I have checked the cables, reinstalled the printer drivers and software and nothing works. I accidently stumbled onto a workaround but I don't know why.

If I scan a document from the printer, my stalled print jobs are released, but they are not fully printer. After the scan completes, I can print again. I have checked the Power save timeout feature and it defaults to 1 hour. (I absolutely hate this feature in any computer appliance. It does nothing but generate problems in my opinion. Thank you federal government for pushing this down the throats of manufacturers). At any rate I wanted to disable this feature but found I cannot from the panel options. I have set it to 12 hours (the maximum setting) in hope that this will resolve the problem I have been incurring.

I have also attempted to disable this from the HP Toolbox but found that this when I uncheck this, the setting does not save. I suspect that this power manangement feature is the source of the problem.

Hi,
I've read the entire forum. I've seen several people that have had the same problem with thier 2110, as i do. during initializing, the scanner light continues to attempt to get "home", buy tring to go to the right. Having never achieved "home" postion, it clicks, and clicks. is there any sure fire fix ? i've read clean the glass/mirror... but don't know if that ever worked, i've read "reset to default setting", that didn't work. is it time to break out the cash and just buy new ? any help would be appreciated, thanks

I had the same problem with my scanner bulb hitting the right side of the printer and making jamming noises. I tried the fix Bert suggested and now it works again. Yeah! I had a heck of a time getting the screws out though, even using a little polygon tool. I ended up using scissors and a little elbow grease. Thanks for the help!

Clean the underside of the scanner glass. You will need a T10 Torx head driver to do the disassembly. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a new printer.

Hi,

This problem persists. Since the printer has been disabled for some time, I have had to buy a new one (not HP!). I still have a use for this one--not to mention that I have bought new ink cartridges for it, in addition to the full ones I already had.

Since there doesn't seem to be any reason for the error, isn't there some way to reset the printer to make it stop showing this error and go back to doing its job!?!

I also have a 2110 with the color latch that failed. I called the number you referenced, and they did not have the part. Nice guys though. Said that the 2110 was designed by HP to be a disposable product and HP doesn't have replacement parts. The suggestion was to get a donor printer for the part. I've actually been looking for one for some time now with no luck. Do you have a latch that I could buy from you?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (6/22/05 12:01 PM) + / -
I don't sell parts but you can check with Stephen. He was the one who gave me the P/N. Go to this thread and click on his name to email him.
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/laser/18334

Printer Tech's Editorial
It does seem like they are disposable. If so, so are the high end models becuase parts are nearly as difficult to get, but occasionally HP will 'mess up' and make a part available. Consumers will only get what they demand from bottom line driven companies. Demand quality and you get quality. Demand low prices and you get the printers being sold today. I personally use only 4 or 5 year old machines.

Re: HP PSC 2110 all-in-one. Scan Trouble shooting by Slash (6/22/05 3:24 PM) +1 + / -
Dear visitors.

(note: i'm a dutch guy (Netherlands) so forgive my bad english)

Problem:
When turning the printer on, the cartridges roll over the barr. Afther that, the scanner does the same. Only in my situation the scanner head keep scrolling to the far right side making a rateling sound. It keeps rateling for abouth 30 seconds. Next problem, nothing works anymore. No copying, printing, scanning.
I tryed everything, power off, opening the printer top (without nowing what to do!), and even used my fist (in anger).
Then the solution came true internet, and i came here.

Solution (you can also read the message before):

When anybody says it does not work, the diddn't do it properly or to quikly.
Note: A.Using a tork screwdriver makes it easyer. B.The scanner "mirror" is the mirror that is next to the scanner bulb on the right. Thats why you have to use the Q-Tip, otherwise you can not reach the mirror. C. Make sure that afther cleaning the mirror, there is no dust or cloth of the Q-Tip is left on the mirror.

THNX for the solution!!!!!

I’m having a very strange issue. My Scanner work fine but my printer prints extremely slowly. It takes about 15-20 min just to print the self-test page, yesterday everything was fine, no new cartridge or anything. The page will print well however I cannot resolve the slowness. Anything printed from windows just times out. HP tech support had me clean the rollers (????) and perform a partial reset. I’ve read the entire forum but no mention of this issue. Any suggestions?

My HP PSC 2100 all-in-one has been flashing "Remove and Check Cartidge" for a few months now. The printer continues to flash, "Remove and Check Cartidge" with the yellow print, fax, scan, and copy buttons all flashing simultaneously. Any suggestions?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (6/25/05 11:19 PM) + / -
To clear the flashing buttons, press and hold Cancel and the Left Arrow while plugging in the power cord. If the error does not clear, you may have a fatal error.

"Remove and Check Cartidge" is generally caused by a defective cartridge or poor electrical contact. Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol.

FOUND OUT HOW TO FIX ALL PROBLEMS WITH MY HP PSC2110. UNPLUG USB AND POWER CABLES. TAKE LIFT TO TOP FLOOR AND WALK TO EDGE OF ROOF. BE CAREFUL TO HAVE A CLEAR SHOT AT THE SIDEWALK BELOW YOU MUST BE UP AT LEAST FIVE FLOORS. THROW THE PSC 2110 OFF THE ROOF AS HARD AS YOU CAN.

THEN GO BUY A XEROX

I HAVE 5 HP PRINTERS AND THE PSC 2110 IS PURE JUNK ONE YEAR ONE MONTH THEY SELF DESTRUCT AND PRIOR TO THAT THE LITTLE NO PRINT OR NO SCAN PROBLEMS DRIVE YOU NUTZ.

I have a problem where I go to print... like business cards for instance.... The top two are beautiful but the rest go from like green to yellow... the color is all messed up.. It's a brand new cartridge. I don't get it. The color just goes to crap before the end of the document it's printing.
Any ideas?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (7/5/05 11:57 AM) + / -
Green is a combination of cyan and yellow. It appears that cyan stops working. Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts. If that fails to solve the problem, try another cartridge. New is no guarantee that it is not defective.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bert (7/7/05 10:06 PM) + / -
Tecate99

Make sure the printer to computer cable is connected securely on both ends.

Uninstall and reinstall the printer driver. Use the uninstaller that came on the original driver disk.

Check for viruses and spyware. Any existing software you have is likely to be useless if the definitions are not up to date.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Tecate99 (7/7/05 11:58 PM) + / -
Hi Bert,

Thanks for the advice. I have uninstalled the software, scan for viruses and spyware (did not find any), reinstalled the drivers and software, but that did not work. I attempted to scan a photo using HP Director, but that did not work.

Warming up of the lamp did not occur (I also did not hear any familiar noises)

It gave a popup screen that said

"The scanner could not be initialized. An error has occured communicating with the scanner. Please check to see if the scanner's power cord and cable are properly attached and plugged in..."

The bottom systray icon says the PSC2100 series is ready. All connections are visibly good.

:( ?

I have attemped to clean the cartridges. Would having low or no black ink cause this? *I assumed that the printer would still be able to receive info from the pc*

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (7/9/05 11:49 AM) + / -
I couldn't agree more....throw it out. It's a total piece of crap. I've had nothing but problems with it. First it wont turn on because it gets stuck and makes that grinding noise over and over and over. Then if you happen to get past the grinding noise, it simply wont print. No amount of time spent with tech support and no amount of time with the trouble shooter fixes it. I spent damn near 350 for this thing too.
Next time I am buying a canon, or a xerox, or hell I'll have my three year old copy what I need printed with his crayons, at least that will work

Re: HP PSC 2110 - Grinding Noise during alingnment by thomj (7/13/05 5:45 AM) + / -
I to have the 'grinding' noise that occurs during alignment after I change out ink cartridges (HP PSC 2110). The only way I get it to stop is to uninstall and then re-install the s/w. Is there anything else I can do???

Also, during the s/w re-install my PC (XP w/ SP2) always re-boots at the point in the install where I am to plug in the USB cable.
- started with SP2, and I have used HP SW clean up (no luck) and even unistalled SP2. Any ideas here?

Thanks

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (7/17/05 9:03 PM) + / -
This is all about clean glass.
You gotta get in there and make that glass clean.
The little white stip under the edge of the glass (you can only see it with the top off) is what tells the scanner bar it is in home position. With that glass foggy and such the optical sensor doesn't register.
Mine is working after cleaning the glass.

How do you carry out a full reset on these printers? (HP 2110)

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Tecate99 (7/18/05 10:34 AM) + / -
Update. I've clean the glass and made sure no dirt or dust remained using canned air. It did print an align page when I replaced the black cartridge with a new one. However, it cannot do anything else afterwards. The grinding continued and I've chucked it out. At least the spare inks will be used by the other two PSC2110s my brothers have.

I've gotten my Canon MP750 and I love it. Cheaper than what I paid for the HP and much faster/better.

:)

Hi, Hoping someone can help me. I am not able to print normally with my psc 2110. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, uninstalling and redetecting the port, turning the machine on and off, restarting the pc, and installing the new drivers on the HP website. I just put in a new color cartridge and an alignment page will print, but after aligning, the lcd screen says "scanner failure, turn the power off and back on". I have done this several times, and the machine keeps repeating the align cartridges message and printing the aligning page. Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks, Rachel

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (7/18/05 9:58 PM) + / -
The general consesus seems to be that the psc 2110 is a piece of crap. I have had mine now for about 4 years. It worked great for about a month. Now it wont turn on, it does the grinding thing. No amount of glass cleaning helps. On the odd occasion that it does turn on without grinding....it wont print. About once every 20 tries it actually prints something. As soon as I have enough dough I am going to follow the lead of many of the posters here and chuck mine from a tall building and get a Canon.
I know that's not the reply you are looking for, Im just sharing my personal experience.
Good Luck

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (7/19/05 2:21 PM) + / -
I've tried all of the above mentioned in this forum.
This "dog" belongs in a land-fill!
Solution:
1)Unplug from surge protector.
2)Go out in shop & buy 2 cups of coffee from vending machine.
3)Return to office...approx. 20 minutes.
4)Plug back in to surge protector.
5)Hit print icon with mouse.
6)This may take some time, but works...
7)If not, hit print icon button again, then hit gray "start copy" button on printer.
8)Usually this works, but if you start printing, you better not press your luck! Don't quit. Try to get as much printing done as possible...

Help!
I have a problem with my scanner carriage. Every time I plug in the power cord the start up cycle begins, however when the scanner carriage is supposed to stop at its starting position something strange happens. The carriage keeps on hitting against a stop and its makes a rattling sound. I tried to reset the system by holding down the left arrow button and the Ann.button at the same time during plugging in. The reset takes place but still no cure. I removed the whole upper part, cleaned the glass inside, the scanner mirror and the calibration strip but still no cure.
Does anyone have a solution to get this baby running again?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Tecate99 (7/22/05 2:12 PM) + / -
Everyone is having similiar problems. I too tried the same thing and the furthest it got to was printing the align page.

My advice is if you've tried to clean the glass, mirror, etc. and nothing worked, to just chuck it and get a Canon.

Before you buy a Canon I suggest you read through the Canon threads on this board.

My hp psc 2110 stopped working after 3 years. I loved it. A computer tech told me that I needed to replace the clear strip that the ink cartridge travels on. (or that's what I think he is saying. He told me in French.) What is that called and how can I get a new one? I live in Africa and I have no access to parts but I will do whatever I can to replace it. Please help!

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Bredboy (7/26/05 9:44 AM) + / -
I have a printing issue. About 1 inch from the left margin, the carriage seems to skip a little bit, resulting in the letter printing at that point to double up. When things are printed in color, you can clearly see where the 3 (or 4) colors that combine are off. You see yellow, then cyan, then blue, etc., and the letter is about twice as wide as it should be. Is this an issue with the aforementioned encoder strip?

Would like to change the default of printing from Normal to

"fast quality". Can this be done?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (8/5/05 5:26 PM) + / -
Here is a rather odd problem with my psc 2110... When I choose to print a photo and select the paper type as "hp premium plus photo paper, glossy" and the print quality as "Maximum dpi", I get a light vertical band down the center of my printed page, about a mm wide. The odd thing is that this ONLY happens when I choose these two properties in combination. When I choose them separately, the line goes away. This is a new problem, and just happened on a photo I have been able to print successfully using these properties in the past. I've put new cartridges in (just in case there was an issue there) with no success. For now, I'm just printing with the properties "hp premium photo paper, glossy" and "Best" print quality, which works. Any tips here would be appreciated.

Hello Bert (?):

Our printer is not working. It is a HP PSC2100/2200 series. It appears after reading a number of posts on this site that the problem is that the belt to the printer cartridge is broken - at least I think it's that one. It's a long skinny "ribbed" black belt that left ink on my fingers when I touched it having discovered it broken - the insides of the tape belt are white threads.

Please tell me asap. if you know the part number for it and where I can get a replacement and/or repair if any.

PSC 2110 by jdc (8/29/05 3:57 AM) + / -
I have looked at the threads, and still need help. The printer starts fine, but I cannot do anything with it. When I try to copy, I get "warming up" then the paper grabs, feeds part way, and the display shows 2 black boxes. I have tried to p/s/c from the computer with no success. And, the self-test will not run. Worse, the printer status on the computer says "PSC 2110 is ready"
I have done the following: Clean the print heads, cancel/left arrow/power, and reset factory defaults. I have not tried to reinstall the software yet, that's tonight's project.
Is it time to follow everyone else's advise and get a new printer? We definitely need an all-in-one.

Instead of reinstalling the software, I put in new cartridges. That at least succeeded in printing out an alignment test, but the next step was to put the paper on the glass to verify or something. I think my display is still saying "alignment in progress, please wait." I'm thinking since neither the scan, nor the copy function work that perhaps the light is "stuck" on the far right of the machine. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My hp psc 2110 says scanner failure and won't do any thing. At the initialization, the printer ask me to put paper in to align the cartridge. I notice the scanner lamp moved out a little bit then move in. At the end it makes grinding noise. The noise comes from the teeth of the gear or the toothed belt (driving the scanner in and out). At the end it says scanner failure, turn off and on again. I did turn off and on again and again but the problem won't go away. Please, anyone, give me instruction to what to do next.

Endemic scanner defect with 2110/6110/etc. by Anonymous (9/7/05 12:50 PM) + / -
I noticed some folks reporting a similar problem that
I had with my HP 6110, which is a narrow band of stripes
appearing on scanned images. This may be due to the ribbon cable
on the scanner head assembly rubbing against the back of the
scanner glass. Look at your scanner operate with the cover off
and you can see this cable rub and visible etching on the
underside of the glass. The problem is most evident with
images that have large dark monochrome (e.g. black) areas, such
as black&white photos. You can see how the stripes on the scan
align perfectly with the travel of the ribbon cable.

Is this consistent with the problems others are seeing?

I called HP support and the bozo in India had no idea that
it was possible for an HP product to have a design problem.
All he knew is that my printer was a couple months out of
warranty, and that was pretty much that.

If anybody happens to experience this problem, and your printer
is still in warranty, I suggest you immediately demand a
replacement.

My printer only has a USB printer cable and my PC usually prints from the parallel port. How do I configure it to print from the usb port?

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (9/8/05 10:29 AM) + / -
Load the software with the printer usb cable disconnected. The program will tell you when to connect the usb cable. It's as simple as that. USB devices load their drivers automatically and that's why the usb cable has to be disconnected when loading the software. As soon as you plug in the usb cable the printer will look for drivers and they don't want it to load an improper driver.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Kasumi (9/20/05 11:54 AM) + / -
I just re-setup my psc 2110 printer after moving to a new house, and now it is acting up. The display says to clear paper jam, and to remove and check the cartridge each time I turn it on. Even after I clear and check, it still displays these messages.

Also, when I print a page, it takes about 5 minutes (when it used to take under 1 minute), and an error message appears on the screen.

Could these problems be caused by 1 thing, or just many small things?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by David_SA (9/27/05 8:35 PM) + / -
I am at the end of my wits with this printer.
It comes up with the notorious message "Remove and check black cartridge". Well, I did. I read all of the thread and followed most of the people's advice here.
I cleaned the contacts on the cartridges and the printer itself with clear alcohol. I cleaned the nozzles too. (they do release some ink, so I know the ink has not dried up. I tried to reset it with pressing Clear and left arrow while disconnecting the cord and then reconnecting again. It said "Partial reset", "Initializing" and then the dreaded message again "Remove and check black cartridge".
It all started when my original cartridge went low. I purchased a refilling kit and refilled the original cartridge. When I tried to use it, I got the "Remove and check black cartridge" message. I tried to fiddle with it but nothing helped, so I went and bought a brand new HP cartridge and after inserting it, got the same message.
Now I get the same message with either cartridge (refilled original and new). I am at my wits end and am just about to take this POS for a batting practice like one user recommended. PLEASE HELP!!! Any ideas and/or suggestions as to how to fix this printer will help. Thanks.

Dave,

When you said "I ran the clean cartridges" after receiving the "Remove and check cartridges" error message, where exactly did you find this option? Is that the software option or do you have to press a combination of some buttons on the printer itself? I am getting the same error ("remove and check the black cartridge") and for the life of me can not get rid of it. Thanks

Hi,

I have a 2110xi that I replaced the cartridges on and can't get it to print color right, it prints out in a blurry purple/black color. The alignment page is printing out only in black which I believe it should have colors on it...when I tried using that alignment page.. it errored out anyway saying it can't find it. I tried cleaning contacts..didn't help.

Anybody?

Does the same blurry purple color when I try to back a black copy of something as well.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Stephen (10/2/05 1:43 PM) + / -
Out of curiousity what does the machine do if the color cartridge is removed? Some HP machines run in reserve mode if only one cartridge is installed, I'm not sure about this one.

Perform the Blot Test

Remove cartridge from machine, fold a paper towel back over a couple of times so it is about 4 layers thick, shake cartridge up and down hard, shake it over a sink unless you want to clean ink off the floor.

Now blot the nozzles of the cartridge on the paper towel, for a black cartridge you should see two black stripes, for a color cartridge you should see three colored stripes, if you don't have all stripes the cartridge is clogged or bad.

Have you checked the expiration date on the cartridges you are using?

Are you installing new HP cartridges, or refills?

You may be able to recover a clogged cartridge by swishing the tip in a saucer with a very small amount of warm water, then gently wiping it on a wet paper towel, be gentle the nozzles are delicate.

And do not trust the ink gauge on the PC, cartridges can dry up from the machine just sitting, the cartridges are vented, venting is necessary to let air in so that a vacuum won't develop in the cartridge.

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 by Jedbrady (10/4/05 1:59 PM) + / -
Sprig,

Although I'm sure you've figured it out or have bought a new printer by now, here is how to fix your problem.

Fix:
Remove the scanner assembly and clean the underside of the glass.

Cause:
This error occurs when the glass becomes cloudy or dirty. There is a white "reset" strip beneath the glass on the underside of the scanner bed, which the scanner uses to find it's position. When the printer starts up, it searches for this strip, but if the white is blocked or screwed, it continues past it, inevidably running into the side of the printer over and over.

I had this problem myself, and I am glad I could help!

Re: Endemic scanner defect with 2110/6110/etc. by Jed brady (10/4/05 2:02 PM) + / -
It is really easy to clean the glass, it's not etched into the glass, there's just dirt there.
Cleaned mine myself today.

Search "noise" in this thread to find how to remove the scanner bed and clean the glass

Stephen,

Thanks for your reply. I tried removing the color cartridge. It came up with the message to re-insert it, which I did, and then back to "Remove and check the black cartridge". I did the blot test like you suggested for both cartridges and they are not dry. The expiration date on the black one is 2006/11/13 and it is the new HP that I purchased. I also tried my refilled original with the same result. At this point I believe that the problem is with the software and not the cartridge unless I am wrong. Is there any way to reset it?

OK here goes,
Over the last week I rebuilt my friends system. I did not bring his printer, a 2110, with me. I took this system, running perfectly (with my monitor, kb, and mouse) back to his house. Plugged it all in and was running great with his monitor, kb and mouse. The last thing to do was reinstall the printer software and the printer.

Where I am now: the keyboard does not repond. it goes to his desktop and there I am. I cannot stop it to even go into bios. Now, even with the printer disconnected. The printer does not work. I tried uninstall with the printer software and a reinstall, nope. The thought of going back into reformat and all the MS XP BS just drives me crazy. I've been working on machines for six years and NEVER encountered this. Any suggestions on whether this is a software problem- ?cable problem, ?hardware problem with the 2110. It would not test print or align. made appropiate noises for cleaning carts at first then (now) not. At one point I received the "printer not communicating with computer" alert. AFTER, READ "AFTER" I plugged the printer in and developed this problem my friend kindly told me that he had been having problems with the printer, too. He said he could not get to print or scan from his computer, but worked fine at the printer. (Copy and scan)
Please pardon the long winded post, but until I narrow this down... Thanks, Robert

p.s. I brought his printer home with me. I hesitate connecting it up to my systems.

Hi,

Hi Stacey, I saw your posting noting that you have three PSC 2110 all-in-one printers for parts. Unfortunately your posting is a year old but I thought that I'd write anyway to see if you still might have a printer or two for parts. I am in need of the print cartridge drive belt. Would you or anyone out there happen to have any PSC 2110 printer parts, please let me know.

Thanks,
Chris Alexandre

HP PSC 2110 - DOA by TonyTony (11/26/05 8:05 PM) +3 + / -
Can someone please help me with this?

When I turn my printer on and it does its start-up routine, one of the things it checks is whether the scanner head is in position or not. On mine, even when it's in the correct spot, it seems to not know it because it tries to keep pulling the head over even though it's as far right as it can go. So, all I hear is clicking. And because the printer never gets past the

Please help. On my PSC 2110 the flap that holds the color printer cartridge in place has broken. Does anyone know how I can fix this myself? I know how to take the cartridge area out but I am not sure where to find this part.
Temporarily, does anyone know how to get the printer to print with just the black cartridge? No color installed.

Thanks in advance,

My machine totally crashed and I'm trying to re-install my HP PSC 2110. I went to http://h10025.www1.hp.com and downloaded the installation file, but keep getting the red X whenever it comes time to plug in my printer. I've uninstalled and attempted to re-install multiple times with the same result. The USB port is good (other devices work through it and the Device Manager shows the printer when it gets plugged in).

Any ideas?

You have to place the alignment page in the very lower right corner. This drove me nuts for a month. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help on this site. I found it by doing a Google search on how to clean the underside glass of my HP PSC 2110. I don't know what we all did before the internet.

I needed to do some serious scanning today of some old photos (which I'm going to use in a Power Point slide show at my wedding next weekend). When I noticed how dirty the glass was in my scanner, I was very happy to find this forum.

With a Christmas hangover still going on, I thought I'd spread some cheer and make a small "how to" for cracking open the HP PSC 2110. Check it out:

I hope it's helpful.

This link goes to the HP company page for trying to fix this problem. I have succesfully fixed a printer for myself that was a different model and after taking it apart and putting together twice I was able to save the printer from the garbage. (I did not set one of the parts exactly right when i tried first time) It works fine now after i replaced everything more carefully second time.

HP PSC 2110 Printing Prob by bap68 (1/1/06 11:09 AM) + / -
Everything works fine on my printer. It will boot up, scan, but it will not print. I can do test pages from the setup menu, but when I send a print command it feeds blank paper through the printer. All other features seem to work fine. I have tried resetting the printer, reinstalling drivers, completely removing the printer and setting it up again.

Boyd.

Re: HP PSC 2110 Printing Prob by mdunn (1/1/06 12:16 PM) + / -
I have the 5110 model that has nearly the same setup except that the scanner on top is a feeder style scanner so it can send faxes as well as scanning. When someone gave me the printer it would turn on and make a lot of noise. Then sometimes it would just feed a blank sheet through like it was going to do a test page but did not print anything. Once I had it apart I saw the small gears near the ink catcher part were just as many other people had encountered also. There are two small pieces that have an even smaller peg on them that were both cracked. Sometimes they would catch each other and feed the paper in and sometimes they wouldn't. It just kept saying "clear carriage jam then press enter to reset." I took it apart once to find there was of course no obstructions inside the unit. Put back together, and same message. After researching hp's idea that this unit is considered a throw away after the one year warranty expires, I found a homemade solution to my problem. Now the whole gear will break before the new and improved pieces will. I made them from part of a nail I inserted into a hole I drilled in each gear where the flimsy little plastic pegs were before. This took me a little while though because if the holes were not done exactly right they cause the center of the gear to bind on its axis peg instead of rotating easily. This person had good photos of the evil little parts and how he fixed them. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com

I think if these parts do not work properly then the ink cartridges do not go into the correct position/location to print anything but it still keeps trying to pull paper through.

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 Printing Prob by Anonymous (1/1/06 12:28 PM) + / -
I am not having problems with it pulling paper through. It will print; just not from a print command through the computer. I can put something on the scanner on have it copy it, I can also print test and maintenance pages.

for a PSC 211O Psupply, what is the Vdc output supposed to be? I read 30Vdc, which seems to me to be a little high.

My PSC symptoms are similar to "theapache" which is:
upon boot-up, will go through a scanner calibration and that is it. the lcd display flashes all pixels, & the led's flash faintly.
It also will not print, copy, scan, or communicate w/any pc.

I tried the reset meathod suggested above. does anone have a schematic or any suggestions?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by The_Apache (1/28/06 3:55 AM) + / -
The Power Supply must have 30 V ~-, I checked it, it´s correct.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by The_Apache (1/28/06 4:01 AM) + / -
I changed all pieces to the printer, all motors, lamps, power supply, CPU board, control panel. No change. Same error as written up there.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by The_Apache (1/28/06 4:05 AM) + / -
Yes, I talk about the real power supply that is fixed by 2 torx screws at the back of the PSC. It has a "cold devices port" at the right side and a yellow and a black cable with a plug on the left side. I know the difference between power cord and power supply, really ;-)))))

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (1/28/06 4:09 AM) + / -
"I checked it" means I read it and I checked it with a DC meter.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by sean3 (1/28/06 4:46 AM) + / -
if the ( Psupply Vout = 30Vdc ), i assume additional Vstepdwn is taken place on the pcboard? if you read the same Vdc as i do, is that a common Psupply failure or is it the correct output required? i do not know.
also, any idea how to gain access to the ctrl keypad w/o breaking plastic?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by The_Apache (1/28/06 5:00 AM) + / -
You can open it very easy, It´s written a little upper here, but I can tell you again. Under the cover of the keypad, there is a 4-corner-hole in the middle. Press in there with a little tool and slide the cover away (to the front).

Re: HP PSC 2110 30 V by The_Apache (1/28/06 5:02 AM) + / -
No, I think 30 V are 30 V. There is a text on the Power supply. 30 V. So i think if the DC meter shows 30 V, it can t be defect.

My printer said to replace the cartridges and I did. Since then and a whole lot of my wife messing with it I cannot get my printer to work. I bought new cartridges thinking maybe I had bad ones. If I unplug the printer and plug it back up after some time of making strange noises then it says press enter to align cartridges. It then very slowly starts to feed the paper through but it does not print anything. In fact although it sounds like something is working the printer carriage is not going back and forth. I have checked for loose connections but cannot find any.
Any ideas?

Re: Strange colors on my HP PSC 2110 by Oldman1 (2/8/06 11:41 AM) + / -
When I print an "alignment page" it prints just fine but when I try making a color copy of it the horizontal lines print with shades of cyan instead of yellow. When I print a color picture, the picture has light, cyan lines down each side and the entire picture has a hazy, cyan tint. The other colors seem to be in place.

I've cleaned the heads on the ink carts as mentioned on this site. It leaves nice lines of each color on the paper towel.

A few days ago, I was able to print color photos that looked just fine.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I had the same problem... but somehow, I was able to fix it with a little help from a black marker... (I'm posting this fix to see if it really is the solution or simply coincidental)

If you notice, there is a strip marking the starting edge of the scanner glasstop... on the one I fixed, the shiny black strip was beginning to get hazy on some parts... giving it a broken line look... I tried to press on the strip to make it stick to the glass more firmly but age and use must have made it's toll on it... so out of desperation, I got a black marker and drew a straight line tracing the path of this shiny black strip... and that did it... the scanner now works perfectly everytime...

Re: HP PSC 2110 by RobPrice (2/20/06 6:09 PM) -2 + / -
I have got two of these printers, one at work and one at home.
Have owned them for about 3 years and any previous issues have been sorted with HP's customer service, ie links to software patches and so on.
One of the printers recently developed the fault that many people describe, ie when you turn the power on and it initialises, the scanner lamp moves too far to the right and does not know where to stop, it causes a repetitive knocking noise.

I have just cured it by following the directions on the thread. ie take the bed off and clean both the thin strip of mirror that is below and just to the right of the lamp (I did this with a cotton bud that you clean ears with(!) dipped in alcohol and then also you need to clean the glass on the underneath of the bed. There is a paper strip underneath the glass with a long white rectangle surrounded with a black border. From what I understand this strip is what the printer recognises during the initialzation process in order to know where to stop the lamp. If there is dust or grease on the glass or the mirror then it does not detect the strip and goes all the way to the right and knocks against the casing.
It took a couple of cleans to get it sorted.
Follow the instructions about taking the top apart, it is quite easy bit but take your time and be careful. I found that I could not disconnect the flat cable that is in the back of the control panel, so turned it over whilst still connected.
Shame HP could not be more helpful when I emailed them, they must be aware of this problem!

I can't picture this model in my head but if it has a LCD screen you should be able to find it by going through the MENU options til you get to MAINTENANCE or similar. If not you will have to do it through the software on the PC. They normally call it PRINT MANAGER or STATUS MONITER or UTILITIES or . . . I'm sure you get the picture?

The carriage jam error could be caused by A) a carriage jam, which you say you have checked, or B) the service station being stuck, due to breaking/sticking. This stops the carriage from moving.
Try lubing the bar with a light lube (3-in-1 etc) but you may find there is a broken gear in the service station.
Good Luck!

Hey Bert

Thanks for this link and forgive me for butting in as total stranger, but it fixed a problem where my hp psc 2110 would pause during printing (esp. PDFs) and miss the very portions of text it had paused over.

Exceeding thanks!

Has anyone had a compatibility problem with the PSC 2110 and Microsoft Works 7.0. If I uninstall the printer, my Works database comes up in a split second. When I install the printer, the same database takes 60 seconds and more to load. I contacted HP tech support, and was told to use the Deskjet 550c software for the PSC 2110. The only problem is that it would then be print only, with no scan or copy features.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (3/27/06 8:33 PM) +1 + / -
When I power up my PSC 2110 all-in-one, the printer's scanner light creeps out and back to its home position in a series of back and forth motions. When the printer is working correctly, the scanner light returns home and the machine works fine. But more often than not, the scanner does not properly perform its back and forth dance, and the printer begins what can only be described as a rythmic gear grinding until i turn the printer off. Sometimes, after I wait a half hour or so, when i turn on the printer, it goes through its scanner light dance and all is fine...no noise. in other words, sometimes the printer starts up fine; other times it doesn't work worth a damn.

Help.

Hello, I broke the plactic tab that hold the carrtrige in it's place. Tried to glue,no luck. Called hp that was a joke talking to India. the piece I need is for the black/color spot. The part that holds down the ink carririge. Please e-mail me if you can help with the part. HP says it cannot be replaced. I think it can. Randy O.

I've had success with epoxy, more exactly Devcon, registered trademark, High Strength Plastic Weld with a little c-clamp pressure. You might try e-bay & see if someone is parting out your model; I see HP carriages from time to time. Good luck.

HP PSC 2110 - System restore & Front panel by PhilG (4/2/06 12:12 AM) + / -
I am helping a neighbor with his HP PSC 2110 all-in-one.
His HP system (Windows XP home) was infected with several viruses/virii. Cleaning the affected files caused even more problems forcing us to to perform a restore from the HP recovery partition.

They did not have the printer/scanner cd. After downloading and installing the "HP Full Solution Software Driver" (166MB), the front panel is no longer functioning and doesn't give any error codes.
If you press any buttons, nothing happens. When the lid is opened, "HP Director" does not start.

We have printed without issue.
We can perform scans through the scanning software (by starting it manually).

The device appears fine though the device manager and no errors are seen there nor in the application/system log.

We have also reset the unit as per the manual (page 51 of 64 of bpu06149.pdf)
Reset your unit:
a. Turn off the unit using the On button located on the unit’s front panel.
b. Unplug the power cord from the back of the unit.
c. Plug the power cord back into the unit.
d. Turn on the unit using the On button.

I have not tried "holding down Cancel and Left Arrow while plugging the power cord in". Since I found this, I will try, but in case that does not resolve the issue, does anyone else have any other thoughts/ideas on why opening the lid and the front panel is not starting the software as it should?

HP PSC 2110 being stubborn by wildman (4/2/06 8:07 AM) +1 + / -
I have an HP PSC 2110 that is being rather stubborn. I keep getting the famous "Paper Jam, clear jam then press enter" error. there is no jam and the paper sensor seems to be moving quite freely. also my scanner head moves all the way to the right and then makes a weird grinding type sound as it tries to move further in that direction. I read somewhere that fixing that is just a matter of cleaning the glass, the mirror, and such but i haven't tried that as yet. i am more concerned about this paper jam issue. i think perhaps the paper sensor went completely out on me. at any rate i need parts so if anyone has one of these printers that has a bad power unit or something that you'd be willing to give me or if you could point me to a site where i could order the parts i'd be most thankful.

I have a message saying I have a carriage jam, but I don't. Had this problem 8 months ago took to service where they found the paper pusher broken. Is this a common problem? Is it something I can fix myself? Should I spend another $60.00 - $70.00 bucks or just go get a better printer?

Re: HP PSC 2110 - DOA by Anonymous (4/9/06 3:42 PM) + / -
I've had this problem off and on for awhile now and not been able to find an exact solution to the problem of the scanner not being able to stop when it is supposed to. For sometime, I was able to just shut off the printer and restart a few times and it worked fine. Another time, I removed the scanner glass, etc. and cleaned the bulb and everything else with alcohol and that worked for awhile.

But now none of these things work. If it isn't too late, the latest thing that works for me is to lift the scanner lid just as it begins to move the scanner bulb back into position during initialization. I haven't fully mastered this yet, but it has worked pretty well. For some reason, when the scanner bulb sees a change (white of bottom of lid to open air when lid is opened) it back tracks a little bit and sometimes remembers where it is supposed to go.

The problem I have with my machine, I think, is that the t shaped piece, which makes contact with and holds down the black cartridge, broke off. The printer will only print a few lines of the alignment page, only when I put some small peice of plastic in there though. Is this a part that can be replaced, or is there some other way to solve the problem? Any help is much appreciated!

I just got a new computer and I used the website you suggested to get the software. But then it says that a 'registration' window should pop up... but it never did.
I also tried going to the Control Panel and tried Adding a Printer. But the computer could not find the printer.
What should I do?

Hi folks,

Just picked what looks like a like new 2110xi at a garage sale. (Disk and all)
Downloaded updated stuff from HP and installed everything. I found/looked over this string, so I did a preemptive cleaning of everything. I now know how to actually get at the mirrors, reposition the drive band for the scanner, you name it.
Long story short, this thing is like new, but it still has the issue on start up of the scanner head refusing to find its stop.
Everything is clean and looks good. Any last ideas before I offer it up for parts?

According to the log, only 1280 pages ever printed.

-Clay

my hp 2110 is about 5 years old. Always has worked great. some of the cartidge issues mentioned here have occured lately but i bought a new generic black cartridge and that is ok. Now i cant print a full page acrross from the internet. It prints the test page fine and so far text from note pad is ok. I am considering a new printer scanner copier if no fix.

Re: HP PSC 2110 Scanning problems by HeadedForTheJunkHeap (4/30/06 10:35 AM) + / -
I have been using my hp psc 2110 fine for almost two years with no problems. Then suddenly the HP Imaging Director stopped working. It told me that there was script errors. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software at least 10 times now. Yes, I did a clean uninstall by using the program. I encountered an error upon reinstallation of Error Code 2343, which I found a fix for. Now I have the software loaded back on, and instead of it telling me there's a script error with the Director, it just opens up the director with NO icons there to click on. Basically, it's a useless window. I tried scanning from the front panel and it tells me the scanning software isn't installed. Installed it once more from the original disc and it gives me the red X that it didn't install properly. Uninstalled again, and downloaded the newest version from hp.com website. Still same error. Also spent my Saturday with tech support and received no better advice than to uninstall and reinstall it again!! DUH! I did as they said, and surprise, no change. Still get the Director opened up with no options, and it telling me the scanner isn't installed. It does still print so I'm keeping it for now for that reason. But unless I get it fixed, it's going in the trash along with my opinion of HP products and their version of "help"!

An "Error!" message keeps popping up, stating that "An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again."
I am able to print and scan without any problems, but it is simply annoying having this pop up constantly. How do I get rid of it?

I have a 2110 that is having the same problem with the scanner bar not initializing properly. I have since upgraded to a 2210. If anyone wants my 2110 it's yours for the price of shipping. The clasp for the color ink cartridge holder is broken but everything else is fine. This printer would be great for parts. My printer was also very slow after changing the cartridge. I tried all the things suggested here, but the problem turned out to be a faulty cartridge. Replacing the old one worked (albeit with little printing because of hardly any ink), as did putting in a third cartridge.

Re: HP PSC 2110 Scanner reset by The_Apache (7/31/06 12:38 PM) + / -
This all with cleaning the scanner lamp, mirrors, glasses and ccd may work or may not work. It´s a walk on the edge. I had the chance to change parts from 3 pieces of PSC 2110 "in circles" to find out the problematic part in one defect PSC2110.

In my opinion these errors and problems come from one fact: The fast aging of the very cheap scanner lamps. They are simply not strong enough and become darker as older they are. Maybe the color of light changes too. I have one that has a little more "red" light than the others. So this all cleaning improves the sensivity of the ccd (and the correct recognition of the Scanner zero position too) but I think there is a limit of improving. If the lamp is too old, all cleaning will not work. The light isn´t strong enough.

Today I discovered something funny. My workspace was very sunny and I tried to repair the psc2110. I made a Init and the scanner moved to the zero position. It did not stop, but I moved a little and my body made a shadow. I think this shadow was mirrored to the ccd of the scanner and it stopped !!! I moved again and the sun was shining on the scanner... and it moved... This caused my opinion that recognition of zero position works if there is enough light...

Anyone with the same experience ?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by melinsd (8/3/06 2:24 PM) + / -
Lenakf,

Could your problem be that the cartridges are beyond the expiration dates printed on them? Even if they're full, the expiration dates will prevent the printer from working. Yes, it's very annoying!!!

I've seen posts regarding some of the other HP printer models that if the battery is removed from the printer the expiration dates on the ink cartridges are no longer read so no longer a problem. Instead of removing the battery, some people have simply placed a piece of stiff plastic (eg piece of old credit card) in between the battery and the contact and that has been easier than getting the battery out.

Does anyone know if the PSC 2110 has a battery, and if removing it (or blocking the contact with plastic) solves the problem of expiration dates on the cartridges? And if this works, does anyone know where the battery is in the PSC 2110 and how to get to it?

Thank you,
Melissa

Though it worked for your printer, the "reset to default" has not solved it on my PCS 2110. I went thru all sort of patient attempts, but with no result, including HP's support.

Did you get any further on this kind of trouble ?

I installed new cartridges in my 2110 this morning and procceded to try to test the allignment. I get the test page out of the printer, but when I place the test page on the glass and push enter, I get a message that says "Alligning. Please Wait." It has never just sat there with this message for such a loing time before, so I am wondering what the problem is.

Incidentally, my computer guy just upgraded the software for the printer, but I have a hard time thinking that would be connected to the problem.

Up until now I had been having a very perplexing problem with my psc 2110. Sometimes when I would send a print job to the printer, it would just stay in cue for awhile and then get an error message in the print/fax window. Very annoying! It would not print anything until I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. I just tried printing something out and it did it again. Tried the partial reset, semi, and full. All to no avail.
Went to print my document again, except this time, I pressed the black copy button and then the start scan button on the printer. And what do you know? It printed like it never had an issue at all. I hope this helps someone out who is having the same problem. Works just fine for me. This printer really doesn't have enough use on it for me to justify getting another one, so I'll deal with it until it just doesn't work anymore.

ahh
i've wanted to kill this machine so many times.
well...i had the 'check cartridge' error that shuts down the computer.
got that fixed by getting a new cartidge...but the 'align' wouldnt go away.
it would crash with 'paper jam' errors and 'paper too narrow'

turns out that it was the media sensor.
make sure that you see a blue light with the print cartridge...that meanst that the sensor is working.
i managed to get it working by jiggling it and cleaning it.

then things worked again.

jiggle it.

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 by Anonymous (8/24/06 2:42 PM) + / -
I have the same problem with the HP 2110. When I send a print job from a Windows application, including the printer's own test page, the printer just pulls a single page through without printing on it.

If I print directly from the scanner ie a black or colour copy it prints perfectly.

I have un-installed and reinstalled from the disc and un-installed and installed from the latest driver.

HELP!!

Did installing the HP 550c driver solve it? Where do you get the drive from? Thank you.

HP PSC 2110-using cartridges beyond the expiration by Anonymous (8/25/06 9:20 PM) + / -
Dear Lenakf and others,

I may have an answer as to how to use ink cartridges beyond the expiration date HP puts on them.

On another thread people had mentioned resetting the date on the computer to something prior to the expiration date of cartridge. I thought they meant you had to leave it set at some old date and I didn't want to have my documents etc marked with the wrong date, so I didn't try that right away.

I finally tried it with an old color cartridge that I had refilled. I reset the date on the computer before I installed the cartridge, aligned pens etc. I printed a couple pages from the internet and it worked (but had the old date on them). I then set the date on the computer back to the correct date and it has continued to print just fine! So, it looks like you only have to set the date on the computer back while you go through the cartridge installation routine and then you can reset it to the correct date. I assume it will work the same when I need to change the black ink cartridge, but I haven't needed to do that yet.

I should mention that I have an older Macintosh and I'm running an older system (9.1), but hopefully this will work with PC folks too or Mac users with system 10. I sure am jazzed to be able to continue to refill my cartridges long past the expiration date!

Melissa

You solved my problem and saved me about $100! Thanks! When I rubbed the alcohol-soaked cotton swab on the contacts, some black ink came off, guess that was the problem.

Re: HP PSC 2110 carriage jam message by desertwalker (8/28/06 3:14 AM) + / -
Hello there ,

Had issues with my printer, and folowed some of your posts, and it fixed the problem a treat. Had an annoying carraige jam issue. In the end it was the sensor strip that was an issue. Make sure when you thread it through that you have a torch so that you can see the little groove behind the cartridges.I didnt do this the first time, but on the second time, it worked like new. Thankyou very much, and take care from sunny Melbourne in Victoria, Australia.

I have followed all post on here:

1.) cleaned the encoder strip, cartridges, heads
2.) reassembled the printer and did a reset
3.) print quality still sucks

This thing has been a beast of a printer for me for 3 years, printing thousands of pages with almost no trouble. Now, the ink is smearing on the page, streaking, and even after the actions, plus using the internal software to clean it, I can't get the print quality to look even 1/2 decent. Can anyone help?

I suggest you to dowload lastest driver(if you are not up to date) and if this don't work you can always buy a new printer if all this didn't work.

I have the "Open Door, Clear Carriage Jam, and then Press Enter" Error Message on a HP PSC 2210xi, as do many of the others posting to this thread. I've already opened it up, cleaned all the contacts, etc with alcohol and reinstalled the encoder strip in the slotted chip on the rear of the print carriage. I've also followed all of HP instructions for clearing paper and carriage jams, installed new ink cartridges and performed numberous soft resets. Unfortunately, I still have the error message and no amount of pressing enter will make it go away. Is there anything else I should try before I throw this printer out and buy a new one?

Re: HP PSC 2110 by mtelbert (9/19/06 10:44 PM) + / -
I have a 2110xi that has worked flawless until the other day. The scanner cartridge is to the far right. After initialization the scanner cartridge starts making a grinding noise. It appears that the scanner cartridge does not know when to stop and keeps trying to go right even though it is as far as it possibly can go. I have tried the reset , Unplugging the machine and restoring power. The scanner gets used very little so I can't imagine it has been over worked.

I have had this printer for at least 2 years now. It has always worked fine. I had recently replaced both bw and color cartridges and printed a few things and they looked fine. Then, I am not sure what happened, but my wife was wanting to print something the next day and the machine wanted to do the print alignment. She did everything it asked like normal, but it now just sits at the "Aligning, Please Wait" phase. Nothing happens. I have tried everything to bypass this alignment, or finish the alignment and nothing works. I just want to be able to print again. What is going on? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have an HP2210 all-in-one printer that has the same exact problem. I keep getting a window that is looking for the alternate path containing the installation package 'PSPrinters08.msi' And it shows c:\HP\TMP\SRC\SETUP\PSPrinters08\ in a select box. And when I click ok a box says it cant find folder. If I click cancel Iget error 1706 . My printer also works and wont scan. I have the installation cd and have uninstalled and installed the printer at least 20 times with the disk and online and can't figure anything out.

Have you or anyone else found the problem?

help me help me help me i just got this 2110 hp all in one printer from a thrift store and at first it worked fine i just hadnt figured out how to scan something onto my printer. I bought a color ink cartridge and i went through the process of aligning the cartridges but when i had to scan the patterns page it kept saying "scanner failure turn off power then turn back on" someone please help me i am getting so stressed out. And if this problem has me opening up the face plate of the printer to clean the glass then someone has to tell me where to get the screwdriver to unsrew those hexagon screws because i have tried everything including four types of scissors to unscrew them.

Re: Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 by Relagan (10/7/06 6:27 PM) + / -
Yup, I'm another happy reader of the group who fixed the same problem the same way. I had purchased a replacement printer, but not opened the box so it's going back. Found this site just in time! Thanks all!

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110 by Relagan (10/7/06 6:38 PM) + / -
I think they are Torx screws. I tried using a #15, but it wasn't quite the right size. I eventually got them out with a small slot screwdriver (a bit under 1/8") and a lot of patience.

I'm far from an expert repair guy, but I had a thought. Before this alignment issue came up, did you try to copy anything with the buttons on the front of the printer? If that worked, the scanner hardware is probably okay. If not, maybe the scanner is dead.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by lmighton (10/12/06 1:52 PM) + / -
Sad me.

Okay, truthfully, I'm almost certain this was user error, i.e. I broke it. But I don't know how to fix it.

I believe what happened is that the b/w 'gate'was still up and open, when I closed the case. Can't remember whether or not that cartridge was in at that particular time. So, the cartridges zipped over to the right, as they do, but the gate got jammed. Fairly easy to extricate, and no problem inserting the cartridge and closing the gate, and all looked well.
But no.

The printer will not work at all when both cartridges are in place. It will only work when the colour cartridge is in but the b/w cartridge is not. It just keeps saying "remove and check right cartridge". I had the cartridge tested on another printer, to see if I'd damaged the cartridge, but it's fine.

When I look to the rate, where the gate got stuck, nothing looks particularly broken or smooshed or out of place.

Re: HP PSC 2110 by lmighton (10/12/06 3:34 PM) + / -
In that last line where I said "look to the rate", should read "look to the right".

I've searched for "noise" through this thread and haven't found my answer, so here's my question. All of a sudden my printer has started making this low pitch screech - not quite a grinding. It'll startle you when it happens, and it doesn't sound good for the printer. This occurs when a document finishes printing and the carriage is returning to it's position on the right side of the unit. Also, the print is "ghosting" near the middle of the page. I haven't tried cleaning to fix that. That will probably help, but I just thought I'd throw it in there in case the problems could be related.

Im running Windows XP. I think I messed up the drivers, so I uninstalled them using the HP Software Cleanup Utility. I downloaded the drivers package off the website, but the computer does not detect the printer at all. The USB port works, so that is not the problem. I don't have the CD. If you need more information, I'll try to reply.

Thank You

Yup, it's the carriage jam, with a twist. My printer was working fine (great even) until I moved my office. It wasn't bounced around much but may have been carried on it's side. Anyway, it hasn't worked since. Keep getting the good ole "Carriage Jam" message. I ripped it a part and discovered that the cradle the the carriage sits in when inactive isn't tilting backward and down to release the carriage. Actually, I was able to move the carriage out and it wouldn't go back because it bangs into the cradle and stops. I'm thinking it's either a sensor or broken spring. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

My HP PSC 2110 is doing exactly the same thing! I recently replaced both BW and color cartridges and everything was fine. Now it's stuck in the print alignment cycle and doesn't recognize that the alignment page is sitting on the glass. It just keeps printing the alignment instructions and alignment page. Any help would be appreciated by me as well. Thanks!

Re: HP PSC 2110 by Stephen (10/28/06 6:59 PM) + / -
Alignment problems could be as simple as a bad cartridge.

I recently worked on a PhotoSmart printer that was printing alignment pages for no apparent reason and replacing one of the cartridges straightened it out.

HP PSC 2110, scanner failure by shihong ma (10/28/06 10:58 PM) + / -
Deal All,

I hope that someone can help me here. My printer 2210xi was running great for 3 years, however, several day ago, when I shut off my computer, the printer showed me"scanner failure, turn off the power and back on again". I tried many many times, just did not work. When the power turned on, just the noise when showed "initializing" after about one minute grinding noise, will show the same message again. Please please give me some suggestions.

Thanks a lot.

Shihong

Re: HP PSC 2110, scanner failure by Anonymous (11/12/06 7:40 AM) + / -
Dear Shihong,

I was having the same problem as were many other people .I read to remove the scanner glass and clean the underside of the glass and clean the mirror next to the scanner bulb, I discovered there is not one mirror there are three. carefully push the scanner head to the center of the scanner bede.slide the belt upwards off of the back of the scanner head be careful not to break the belt.open the scanner head and clean the mirrors,(it is so much easier with the scanner head removed)use canned air to remove anything left behind by the cleaning.it took me several times to get it right but this worked for me

Help,
I have a 2210xi that a customer gave me after HP said it could not be fixed. It was plugged in during a major power spike and now the scanner head does the far right grind. Nothing has worked so far, including cleaning back of glass and mirror. What commands can I try from the keypad or is the circuit board fried?
Thanks

WE HAVE REMOVED THE COVER THAT GOES OVER THE KEYS AT THE
BOTTOM RIGHT. MY QUESTION IS HOW DO YOU REMOVE THE GRAY
COVER THAT GOES TOP TO BOTTOM ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE THAT
THE SMALL COVER SNAPS INTO? SO WE CAN REMOVE THE TOP RIGHT
HAND SCREW UNDER THE GRAY COVER.

ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

I thought my printer was toast and I read through the posts and found my problem and fixed it myself THANKS!
Problem:
When printer turned on it had a grinding noise like the scanner wanted to go over to the right more but couldn't and when the noise stopped nothing worked.
I took the printer apart and cleaned everything crossed my fingers and put it all back together and WOW it Works!

Re: Re: HP PSC 2110, scanner failure by philkansascity (11/30/06 10:04 PM) + / -
I also had to clean ALL THREE mirrors before this solution worked for me.

Symptom was that upon initialization, the scanner bed kept attempting to locate 'home' by moving to the right until the printer would start grinding ad infineum. This prevented all functions: scanning, printing, copying.

I tried cleaning just the glass and the ONE mirror to the right of the scanner bulb as suggested in multiple posts above. Tried twice with no luck. Then I read that there are actually THREE mirrors that might need cleaning.

1. With the unit turned off, gently push the whole scanner unit to the center of the tray.
2. Next you must remove the scanner unit from the black belt that spans the entire top span of the scanner tray. I bent a paper clip so it had a U at the end, ran it along the belt until it was next to the clip that binds the scanner unit to the belt. Then I pulled up and voila.
3. Pull the scanner unit off the metal bar. It should easily lift out. Clean the TWO lower mirrors with a Qtip.
4. Replace the scanner unit and put the belt back into the clip.
5. Reassemble. Voila... it worked

GOOD LUCK

To all those who contributed to this fix.
My PSC 2105 started the scanner grind about 6 months ago, I had tried to repair it several times and had all but given up, the only reason I still have the printer is because I am a PC hardware hoarder.

I did a final search on Google and found this site and EURECA I cleaned the glass and the mirror put it all back together and I now have a perfectly working Scanner, well it initiliazes itself OK haven`t actually done a scan yet.

P.S. If anyone follows this up I hate the HP Scanning Software and Print Drivers does anyone know of any good alternatives before I re-install the HP set??

MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL
