Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print !

Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by meliluc (9/14/04 1:31 AM) reply+6 + / -
Good morning ( afternoon, evening, night, day, whatever )
I have a Canon SmartBase MP730 Photo which, up to 2 days ago, was working just fine. Then on sunday I refilled the ink cartridges, and now it doesn' print anything. That is to say I can hear that it's printing, but the pages come out blank, which is nice in a way because I can use them again, but then again is a pretty useless trick for a printer to perform.
I'd be eternaly gratefull (for at least 20mn) if anyone can help me.

Canon Smartbase MP700 Waste Ink Near Full - Help! by Anonymous (3/19/05 2:31 PM) reply+5 + / -
I was able to get to step #5 in your instructions for the MP730. I've read these boards for hours and I'd really appreciate your help with my MP700.

1. My MP700 has worked perfectly for 1.5 years.
2. I replaced my Printhead with a new one within the past two weeks.
3. Within the past two days, I noticed a toner smell when my printer is on.
4. About 24 hours ago, I started to get the message "Waste Ink Near Full".

I have not heard back from Canon support yet. My question to you:

1. Where can I get the replacement felt-like pads?
2. Where can I find instructions on how to remove the pads and install new ones?
3. What modification is needed to your instructions for this slightly different situation?

Thanks, in advance, for sharing your knowledge!

Canon MP730 got paper jam where paper feeds into printer. Since I pulled the jam out, the printer is now printing a blank sheet before and after each print command. Any idea how to stop this? THANKS

Thanks a lot in advance.

Who encountered the same problem - and found a solution?

Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't dial ! by victor chavez (10/29/05 9:23 PM) reply + / -
My printer has been working fine for a while and now for some reason is not dialing. When I want to send a fax I can hear the dial tone but is like the machine doesn't "hear" the numbers. The dial tone stays there even though the MP730 is dialing.... and at the end the dial tone beeps like when you leave your phone off the hook.
I tried to do it manually and I pressed the button "Hook" that works like a speakerphone. Then I heard the dial tone but again when I pushed the numbers, the dial tone was still there.
I called canon tech support and they said that maybe the modem inside the MP730 is broken. If that is true, how come I can receive faxes with no problem? Does anybody has any clue on how to fix this problem? I would really appreciate some help.

Thanks

Victor

Somehow solved the problem at a friends by changing the paper settings of the printer twice.
The settings were somehow reset to a non standard format (letter) and i changed it back to A4.

PLEASE HELP....HOW DO I OPEN MY CANON MP730 by mkgayle (2/18/06 12:27 PM) reply+3 + / -
I have had Canon printers for 10+ years, and I have even replaced felt pads in a couple of them incuding my old BJC500...and I now want to replace the pads in my MP730 but cannot figure how to get it open to get to the pads....can you please help!!!!

I am not concerned about "warranty" etc,.... because it is no longer under warranty and taking it to the local Canon Repair facility is too costly .... if I can replace them myself. I love my Canon printers....but this is the first I could not figure out how to open.

I have a Canon MultiPass MP730 and the procedure above for the SmartPass doesn't work. Any suggestions?? I know someone above also said not to reset the counters unless you change the ink tank, but I took it to a repair place today and they said it wasn't too full, but they didn't have the reset procedure, any other advice??

Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by Anonymous (8/14/06 1:56 PM) reply + / -
no you don't need to replace the pads, they look like they'll easily do twice life.
if the reset is not in the test section, it maybe in the printer section option 5, if it shows purge reset its not the right one and do not alter it.

Thank you .... Thank you .... Thank you!
Like everyone else I had the "ink tank full" message. Searched the book, searched Canon's website, then searched the web. I found my piece of mind at your website. Thank you. I followed the directions (used two different posted directions) and I was finally able to get it to reset to ZERO! Yea! ..might seem like a little thing to most, but you guys saved me $ - appreciate your website and the assistance.

Re: Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by Anonymous (9/13/06 9:45 AM) reply+1 + / -
I've got the 'waste ink near full' message too, and I'm appalled at the apparent cost of putting it right. But surely all the solutions here for resetting the counter won't solve the problem long term? All that waste ink has to go somewhere and eventually it will overflow where you don't want it!

It would be too easy for Canon to provide straightforward access to the appropriate chamber to remove the 'full' pads and simply replace them with new ones! Only 'authorized operatives' can do this at a call out fee of about £70 (in UK) not including cost of parts, etc. About half of what I paid for my MP700 in the first place!

'You might just as well buy a new printer', they say. Yes, but what is that doing for the environment? The present one's perfectly ok but for this problem which could - if Canon wished it - be easy and inexpensive to resolve by the owner him/herself!

MP730 blank pages before and after print job by Anonymous (9/14/06 8:49 PM) reply + / -
I am having the same problem...ever since I had my first ever paper jam. The device has been working flawlessly until now. I really don't want to have to spend a ton of money getting the ink waste or whatever fixed. Isn't there another way to manage this other than a reset? By the way, how *do* you do the reset? I couldn't find anything remotely like it on the menu.

Thanks

Canon MP730 Paper won't pull in by w-lou (2/23/07 8:50 AM) reply + / -
When I try to print or copy, the page gets pulled in part way and begins making the sounds as if it is printing, but does not pull the paper in incrementally. I hear the sound as if the paper is being pushed out after the printing is finished, but the paper never went through.

I get an error message about a "paper jam" but the paper never even made it into the machine. The page that did get pulled in part way has a small nick on the bottom of it.

I've opened the back of the printer to see what might be the problem, but I'm not mechanical and have to clue as to what might be wrong.

Is there a freely available schematic on the web?
Or does anyone have any ideas on what to do next?

Thanks for your help.

Can anyone help me? My canon mp730 image class printer is printing fine and everything, but the colours are all wrong! when i print on "standard" setting it prints in the right colours, but with bars of different colour. it's like one bar is redder, then a greener bar, then a redder bar, etc. Also, when i print set on "high" quality, it prints well, except it's always green! How can i get the stupid thing to print the correct colours? i don't think it is an error in the printer itself, because when i copy things the colour is good. maybe there's an error in the messages sent from computer to printer. i've tried just about everything to do with the settings on the computer, and i've performed every possible bit of maintenence, but nothing works! has anyone ever had the same problem? can anyone help?

How can i do a nozzle test? i've done all the print head alignments and stuff, and some of it is fine, but other bits are retarded. what should i do if it is an issue with the cartriges or nozzles or whatever? would i be better off just taking it in to a professional?

Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by BAB (3/21/07 12:21 AM) reply + / -
In the maintainence section of the printer menu you will find the nozzle test. Do it. If all colors print fine you have a different problem but if they don't print fine, your print head is probably contaminated or bad.
You can buy a new print head at http://www.beckscrs.com and other Canon parts. But do the nozzle test first and maybe even a few head cleanings. Make sure your ink cartrides are in the correct location in the print head and the colors are pure and not contaminated.
Try not to be using refill ink as the refill ink is water based and Canon ink is alcohol based. Must be a reason for that.

Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by Anonymous (3/21/07 4:27 AM) reply + / -
My printer that was printing blanks, stopped feeding paper for fax printouts, and all kinds of other uglies happened. I took it to two different technicians and the advice was just to dump it.

I had always bought new, Canon cartridges.
I will never buy another inkjet, that is for sure.
Not sure I'll ever buy another Canon either.

In the end, I just left the printer with the technician who said they'd dispose of it, otherwise I would have had to pay a dumping fee.

:(

Yesterday I cleared a paper jam and today I have a blank page printing before and after the print job as others have experienced. Has anyone found a solution to this? I tried printer defaults, turning it off and on, printing test page, changing paper size, and still get the same results. Everything else works fine, other than the extra pages that run through the printer. Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Thanks.

How to remove Wrong Cartridge error on Canon MP730 by jijma (4/28/07 11:36 AM) reply + / -
First Clean and Dry the Print Head:
I used a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Do not use too much alcohol.
Then dry the heads, again using dry cotton swab. Be careful not leave any cotton threads on the print heads.
Then I padded dry the spongy Ink Absorbers (one for black ink and the other for color ink) using
Separate cotton swabs for each absorber. Do not displace the absorbers. Or you can replace the ink absorbers at this point if you do not want to pad them dry.

Then Proceed to the Waste Tank Reset procedure below:

To reset waste tank full error in MP730.

1. Press the "menu": Key
2. Press "Copy" Key
3. Press "#" Key

4. Scroll thru the menu headings until you come to "Test Mode" - 12th heading or select (-) as a short-
cut to the last setting.
4a. Press “Set” and the display shows:
Test Mode [1] – [8]
CF-FH3 :WLD-11-02

4b. Press “8” and the display changes to:
Test Mode [1] – [8]
Please wait

***note*** you have to wait until the display changes

Then the display changes to:
8: PRINTER TEST
[2]---[8]

5. Then Press the "3" button and the display shows:

8 – 3 : EEPROM Clear

*** the display scrolls to [0] : INK COUNT
[1] : 2PURGE FLAG

6. Press "0" button – for INK COUNT
7. Press the "Stop" button
8. Press Off then On to set new changes.
9. Printer feeds a blank page after it is turned on again.

This should Reset the printer and remove the WRONG CARTRIDGE error and save you a few dollars.

Replace all the Ink Absorbers.
QA4-1012-000
QA4-1013-000
QA4-1014-000
QA4-1015-000
QA4-1055-000
Reset the counter to zero.

Replace the printhead. QY6-0042-000 (now QY6-0064-000)
Should cost you about $54 if in the US.

This will only work a few times. Eventually, it will fail to reset
and you will have to replace the Printhead. I hope this helps.

Ramsey, you've just experienced a very common problem with the MP730. When you pull the jammed paper out of the machine, you forced the timing gears to go backwards and now they are out of sync with the main paper feed unit.

You have two choices,... take the printer to a Canon Service Center and pay them about $90 to fix it. The second choice is to wait a couple of weeks till my service manual is complete and buy a copy at eBay. This will walk you through fixing it yourself. For me to tell you how to do it, and get it right, would take about 15-20 pages of text and 30-40 detailed photos showing step by step.

I have the same problem as the original poster, MP780 goes through the motions of printing but the resulting sheet is blank. We replaced the printhead with a new Canon spare, which cost us $67 CAD direct from Canon Canada. No change. New head, old inks (but they're liquid and seem fine). Blank output. LCD status seems normal. Any other suggestions?

Edit: I also cleared the EPROM for kicks, no change.

Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by trigger1937 (5/29/07 9:23 PM) reply + / -
Triplight,... there are many possibilities that would cause this, but my number one guess is the purge unit. Think of it this way. You have a brand new Printhead, and you have brand new ink cartridges.(and we are sure you are no dummy so you removed the tape on the back of the carts that lets the air flow in to replace the volume of ink that must flow out.) So everything is new but still it prints blanks. The purge unit does the most important job; it "PRIMES" the printhead with ink by "Sucking" ink out of the ink carts all the way through the printhead and dumps the ink in the bottom of the printer. If the purge unit is not working, you will never, never, never, ever get any ink out of the ink carts into the print head. The printhead only works once it is full of ink and there are no air gaps to create a vacuum. Soooo to get this all working, the printhead has to work, the ink carts must allow air in the top for ink to flow out the bottom, and the main PC cart must turn on all the electronics at exactly the correct time. So there are only about 27 things that could go wrong to stop this process. Sounds simple to me.

To get really serious, try testing the purge unit to see if it will such ink out of the ink caps. Put some Windex on each cap and do a couple of power on/off cycles to force a cleaning cycle and then look at the ink caps to see if the Windex was actually sucked away. By the way, the ink Caps are those little rectangular pads where the printhead sits when it is parked in the far right position. These are tiny ceramic substrates with 1000's of holes in them. When the printhead sits on them, the purge unit has two tubes connected to the bottom of these pads and actually creates a vacuum and sucks ink through the printhead nozzles which gets the ink from the bottom of each ink cartridge through the printhead, down through the nozzles, through the ink pads and out the tubes at the bottom of the purge unit and is finally dumped into the waste ink pads.

Many people don't believe this but I think this is more than 75% of the problems that people have and think they have a bad printhead. For those of you that are doubters, just put a small piece of scotch tape over the back of one of your ink cartridges and run a few nozzle checks. After 2 or 3 when most of the ink of that color has left the printhead, you will not see that color printed again. Take the tape off, do a cleaning cycle and then print the nozzle test. It will all come back to normal colors.

Think about if you had a clogged ink cartridge, it would almost give you the same effect. Think about a clogged printhead, same again. It all comes down to ink flow from the very top to the very bottom, and everything in between.

I could stay here tonight and continue to write information on each and every part of the printer that is involved with this process. However, there is not enough time to cover one topic let alone the 27 that could cause this problem. This is why I have written a Repair Manual for Canon printers that will teach you step by step how to do these things. When this manual is finished I will post the information to this web site and the Manual will be for sale on eBay. However, I’m afraid that the Monitors for this forum will probably delete my message. So if any of you are going to be interested in my Repair Manual, send I an email and I will put you on my contact list

Re: Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by Triplight (6/6/07 2:56 PM) reply + / -
I tested the purge unit as Trigger suggested, and each time the "Windex" (we used a rubbing alcohol mix) was correctly purged away. Tried three times. So if it's not the printhead... then... it could be anything? Is there a next-most-likely culprit?

Again, this is a "unit prints blank pages only" situation that persisted through a printhead replacement.

triplight, I've been so busy I haven't had time to watch this forum. I'm not sure if i mentioned it before but you could try cleaning the gold contacts on the back of the printhead. I use the eraser of a pencil that I have cleaned on a piece of cloth. After that I use a tissue with some rubbing alcohol to finish the cleaning. I have some printers that are doing the same thing and I'm still trying to isolate what the problem is. If you have luck, post the answer here. We all could learn more about these problems.

I have a “Canon Smart Base MP 730 photo”. The ink carriage remains locked in the parking position even if I open the lid to replace the cartridges. With other words the cartridges remains hidden on the right carriage end. The orange alarm LED is blinking and Error Code ##334 is displayed. Can somebody help me?

I've just repaired the MP 700, but the 750 is similar, I'll have a look at the problem tommorrow and post what I find.

Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by Anonymous (9/10/07 4:48 AM) reply + / -
The error code ##334 represents a printer control error, specificaly an EEPROM check error. The manual indicates that this means the Printed Circuit Board may need replacing, however, try this procedure.
Insert paper into machine.
1)To enter service mode press Menu, copy, #
2) Select Test Mode with the + or - keys
3) Press OK
4) Press 8, lcd shows 'Please Wait', after wait, press 3, the lcd then alternates between 3-0 (EEPROM clear, this normally is used to reset the Waste Ink Tank Near Full message but may just rectify your problem), and 3-1 (Purge flag)
5) When EEPROM clear (3-0)shows, press 0, then OK, then Stop then press the OFF button.
Start again at step 1, in step 4, this time reset the Purge flag by pressing 0, OK, Stop, Off.
If the red fault light is still blinking press Resume.
Hope this helps.

Re: Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by moe (9/13/07 11:20 PM) reply + / -
The obvious thing to check is for damage to the usb port on the printer. I've seen several that have been damaged by kids and dogs tripping over the cable. Typically, the center plastic guide in the port breaks off leaving the metal contact fingers to short out when the connector is inserted. Having replaced a few of them, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't really skilled at soldering.

trigger1937,

I'll be waiting as well. Hope you get better.

Mean time I have MultiPass MP730 where magenta is the only color that will not print. I believe I have severely clogged nozzles. I've tried warm water rinse, compressed air from a can, and isopropyl alcohol bath...a second time as I write. Tomorrow I'll install the print head again after it drys, but I don't think there is any way to dislodge the clog. Might be time for a new print head. Don't think it is the purge area, because the other colors are doing fine. If you have another idea, I'm open for suggestions.

trigger1937

I have an MP390 Canon Multipass printer. I have fixed my print problems so many times I thought I'd post here even though I don't see anymore references to my printer (now very old).

I have problems about every six months with the black not printing. This is because the print head is clogged with dried ink (probably due to buying cheap ink).

I fix this by removing the print head and removing the black cartridge. I then go to the sink and run very hot water directly into the cavity for the black cartridge. This softens up the dried ink. Then i reinsert the black cartridge, and holding it overr the sink, blow as hard as I can into the little vent hole on top of the cartridge. If you can manage to have a flood of ink come out of the bottom, then you are fixed.

I believe this would work on any ink cartridge that has the vent hole on top of the cartridge, and particularly where either the printer has not been used often, or if cheap ink is used that causes the ink to dry up or become congealed in the print head.

A couple of years ago I discovered my solution on-line. At that time the MP390 Multipass was fairly new but multiple people had the same problem. All of the stuff about using distilled water, alcohol, compressed air and so forth is unnecessary. I have fixed my print head about 4 times with nothing but hot water, with no resulting damage to either the print head or the printer.

Remember you have to put the ink cartridge back in to create a proper seal, and blow through the vent hole. Attempts to force air directly through the print head ink opening will probably not work because the larger opening will not be sealed.

Finally this solution may not pertain to you as I am not familiar with the MP730. But it may help someone else.

Regards, cage67

I've read that there is something to do with a waste bin getting full but we again, have no error. Please post a response to this issue.

Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by trigger1937 (11/30/07 10:01 PM) reply + / -
Mr, Anonymous,... When you changed the cartridge did you put in a new one, our just refilled the old one. Are you using Canon ink carts or vendors. Have you ever refilled your carts.

95% of the time when it won't print black, you have a clogged printhead. Don't continue to try and print in that condition. If it is clogged, this means you are not getting "WET" ink down into the printhead. It can't get past the clog.

REmove the ink tanks and test them to see if the ink really flows. Hold them over a paper towel and see how long it takes for the ink cart to drip. If it does not drip, the cart can't supply the ink that is need to print. Hold the cart over a paper towel and blow air into the real inlet. This should force ink to drop out the exit hole. If you get good ink flow move on to the next step. If you don't get good flow, get a new ink cart and start all over.

REmove the ink carts and take the head to the laundry room sink or the garage sink. Open the faucet to medium hot, such that you can still hold the printhead. With a solid stream of water, let it hit the filter screens for each color. Then turn the printhead over and flush the ink off the bottom. With a fine "JET" of water, hold it over the exit nozzles and move it back and forth. After a couple of minutes turn the printhead over and examine each of the printers color & black filter screens. They should be "WET" with the colors you just purged. Put some very hot water (about 1/4") in a dish and let the bottom of the printhead soak in this for about 15 minute. Replace the water with fresh hot water and repeat. If you have a spray nozzle on you sink, use that to force water directly into the black nozzles.

Return to washing both top and bottom of the printhead and repeat this step until you do not see any wet color ink coming from the color filter screens. If you can get water to flow from the bottom of the printhead up and out of the filter screens, you are proving that you no longer have a "Major" cog in the printhead. Dry the front, real, and all internal parts of the printhead with compressed air. Re-install the printhead and run a new cleaning cycle and print a nozzle check. If you don't get a good black nozzle test, either you need to do some more cleaning or you have a bad printhead.

One last point,.. all this trouble started when you replaced an old ink cart with a new one. Do the drop test on you new ink cart to prove that it can deliver ink. If that works, Try and clean the black suction cup of the purge unit. Use Windex. If your purge unit is clogged and you install a new ink cart, it can't such ink out of it to prime your printhead, so it will never print any black. I could go on for hours but I'm tired and I'm going to bed.

Re: Canon Smartbase MP730 won't print ! by photon (12/5/07 11:53 AM) reply + / -
I decided to dismantle it completely, first thing is to take the rear cover off by removing the four screws that hold the rear cover on, remove the rear cover, unplug/unscrew the wires leading to the top cover, remove the white pin that holds the top cover support arm, this allows you to remove the top cover completely. Then, on the right hand top of the machine, remove the plastic cover and then the PCB, then the metal cover. You can then remove the printhead carriage. This is done by removing two screws, one at each side of the printer located about one third of the way from the printer rear. Once removed, the carriage can be lifted clear, this exposes the base tank which has five pads in it and a whole mess of semi soid ink.I don't think the machine will stand one reset without causing an even bigger mess. Word of warning, there is an optical encoder on the left hand end of the feed roller, don't get ink on this!
Having washed the pads in warm water and dried them ,reinstall the pads and reassemble the printer, make sure you locate the carriage correctly n the locating pegs. Tip, take a photo of every step and lay out the screws as you dismantle!
When complete, you will have to do several head clean operations to get the colours right. If the red light still blinks, press the resume button to clear it.

Canon Smartbase MP730 - Jams and cannot turn off by mooli (12/16/07 1:13 AM) reply + / -
Hi.
I have a Canon Smartbase MP730.
Recently, i've occasionally had "cartridge jam" errors, which happen after 3-5 pages have already been printed. I click the resume button, and the bloinking error light disappears, but nothing else happens. On the computer, the document appears as "failed to print". I cleared the printer spool, but when I send other docuements to print, nothing happens on the printer. They appear on the computer as "printing", and just stay that way. When I try to turn off the printer, even hours after the error, I get 3 beeps and the message "Machine in use, Cannot turn off".
I already sent my printer to be repaired, and they returned at after a cleaning, stating that it is in working order, and that the printheads do not jam.
I tried connecting it, and it did not work until I replaced my usb cable, and then it came back to life - but with the error described above.
Is there any solution for this problem? Any ideas?
I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks.

ImageClass MPC190 - how to make it print by ming007 (1/12/08 1:40 PM) reply + / -
My ImageClass MPC190 also wouldn't print and I have managed to make it print now.

1. I use a black cartridge from http://www.ecbinkjet.com.au Very cheap.
2. Unclog the printhead. Use warm water to soak it to remove some of the ink first and then drip a couple of drops of cleaning fluid from www.jettec.com to the facing up print jets. It won't work if you just rub it with cleaning fluid soaked cotton pad. With the jet facing up, if you can see black ink drop from the other side of the printhead to your table then the unclogging succeeds. Do it several times until the ink is less dark.
3. Put it back to print a text document. If it still won't print. Check whether you choose "Borderless printing" in Page Setup of the MPC190 Property. Untick it and you should be OK. It will print in colour if your colour printhead is OK when you choose "Borderless Printing" as if printing a photo.

press the menu button
then press the copy key (copy, fax, scan area)
then on the printer screen (where it did say check printer) scroll down to select test mode
select 8 (printer test in test mode)
then select 3 (eeprom clear)
then select 0 (ink count)
press stop (red button)
then press the on/off key (shut it off)

then align it
I did a head clean thru the printer but didn't print any ink on the paper
So I did 2 or 3 deep cleaning thru the computer
or it will not print any ink out at all (just a heads up on that problem)
it should be could to go

Hope this help if not write back and I will help you some more if I can. GOOD LUCK by damnprinter

answer to what is change "H" value for a Canon MultiPass mp730

it is: you need to select the horizontal vaule for columns A to K on the printout. which is dealing with the alignment print head. Easier terms, you need to do an alignment on your printer especially the horizontal vaule for columns A to K. (it must be off just enough to
