Canon F50 Waste Tank Full Reset Codes needed

Canon F50 Waste Tank Full Reset Codes needed by Chris Rodgers (9/13/04 8:06 AM) reply+8 + / -
Hi!

I've got a Multipass F50 with the infamous "Check Printer" message flashing. I know how to disassemble and clean the waste ink pads, which I did, but I do not know the reset (reset waste-ink counter) codes/procedures. I found some procedures for other Canon models archived in this forum but have yet to see one posted for the Multipass F series (F30, F50, F60).

Can anyone please provide an answer?

Thank you!

Chris R.

Thanks!

A "CHECK PRINTER" message is a general error warning, only by turning on the Error Management SSW#1 will you obtain an error code number. This may or may not be a waste ink warning, it could also indicate a head tempreture or other error.
Any Authorized Canon Dealer would know how to enter the service mode on this unit and effect repairs

Re: Canon F50 Waste Tank Full Reset Codes needed by Chris Rodgers (9/14/04 6:19 AM) reply + / -
Barry,

Thanks for your reply.

I bought this machine used and I have about 5-6 years experience servicing Canon printers although I am in no way an "Authorized Technician" (thus I do not have access to any of the Service Tech Manuals).

This F-50 was (internally) covered in ink. The waste pads were full to capacity and ink had bled over into other parts of the printer. Based on the life/age of this machine, I am 99.9% sure that it is a waste ink tank reset error.

As you probably know, Canon Tech Support will not give-out the reset code. I was told by them just this morning that "even if we had access to the Service Manual for that model we are not allowed to give out that information.."

I'm just a guy working for the U.S. Army on a Government salary whose trying to raise two kids and support a household. I buy these printers used because I simply cannot afford to buy them new. Since I have experience repairing small electronics, most times I can fix what I buy used. In the case of Canons, I have bought Canon printers for my kids and 9 times out of ten the used ones I buy are junked by their original owners due to clogged printheads (people see the price of a new printhead and decide it's not worth the $$). In this case, the printhead is fine, I have another used F50 and I tested the components so I definitely feel it's simply a matter of resetting the waste-ink counter to clear the error.

If you have any additional information that I could use it would be VERY much appreciated!

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

With thanks,

Chris R.

Chris,

I know that you posted this a long time ago. Did you get a response? I also have a canon mp f50 with the same problem. Did you ever get a response on the "code". Thanks, Bruni

Can anyone out there help? The check printer message will not go away. I was told by a printer field engineer that it has to do with the ink tank. He cleaned it, left the machine spotless, but he cannot get the code to reset it. No offense to canon but the MP F50 was discontinued a while back, I was told, and I would hate to have to pay more to fix it than what I paid for it. It is a great printer, one of the best I worked with, but it is of no use right now. HELP???????

Re: Canon F50 Waste Tank replace instruction by Anonymous (7/13/05 10:47 AM) reply + / -
I got this "Check Printer" message a while ago. I was told to disassemble and replace the waste ink pads. I did half way, and was unsure how to get to the bottom of it. Can anyone give a detail instruction? My printer has been set idle for couple of months already.

Canon F50 Waste Tank Full Reset Codes by AngelT (8/1/05 1:45 PM) reply + / -
It could be due to "waste tank full" alarm; you may need to reset the waste tank counter.
I found a reset sequence for a MP730 printer in this website that works for F30 and F50 as well. Try:
Resetting the Waste Ink Volume Counter

1) Enter SERVICE MODE.---
By pressing Menu-Copy-#

2) Select TEST MODE.
3) Select [8] PRINTER TEST in TEST MODE.
4) Select 3. [EEPROM CLEAR].
5) Select 0. [INK COUNT].
6) Press the [OK] key.
7) Press the [Stop/Reset] key (returning to the state of 3)), and then press the [ON/OFF] key.

Skip step (6) since there is no [OK] key on F30 and F50 printers.

Canon F60 Waste Tank Full Reset needed by Alan Anderson (9/2/05 1:40 PM) reply+1 + / -
I have perused this entire forum and have seen others requesting reset code for the F60 but of all the various resets posted, not one seem to work with this F60. Does anyone have the reset for this specific unit?

Re: Canon F50 Waste Tank Full Reset Codes needed by Alan Anderson (9/2/05 2:13 PM) reply + / -
I finally got the Test mode to work as shown above using the Menu-Copy-# sequence to get into it. I tried the reset but still get check printer. I then set the error codes on parameter and now get 'check printer 335'.
Does this mean the printer is toast?

Colors not printing accurate Canon Multipass F50 by Stacia (9/25/05 4:43 PM) reply + / -

I also have the same "Check Printer" problem with my Multipass F50. When I tried using the codes mentioned above the printer seemed to be trying to reset itself but would come back with the same error.

At the risk of sounding naive, does the printer have to be cleaned out before resetting the codes? Or can the alarm be reset and the waste tanks & pads be physically left in the same condition?

If it must be cleaned, how do I get to the pads and waste tank myself? I've read the waste tank is at the bottom of the unit's interior but I couldn't figure out a way to disassemble the F50 to reach it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Canon Multipass 2500 by Anonymous (10/9/05 2:36 AM) reply + / -
The Canon Multipass 2500 requires a single black cartridge for it copier function. I recently refilled a cartridge and use if for a few days. Now I am getting an "Install cartridge" message on the LCD which is preventing me from using the copier.
Does anyone know how to reset the BC-20 black cartridge so that this message will go away and allow me to use my copier again?

I have an Canon F50 stating wrong cartridge. I thoroughly cleaned the print head (even removed the ceramic thingy and cleaned the pipes leading to the wires), I tried the code reset for the full waste tank shown above, but alas, no joy. Any more ideas before I throw it in the creek?

I tried this and it worked great. My F50 kept showing "wrong cartrige." I don't take credit for this I foud it on another sight
for another model of canon printers, but it worked on my used F50.
Here it is:

1: Remove Cartridge
2: Unplug the AC Power Cord
3: Hold down the RESUME button
4: Release RESUME after plugging in the AC Power cord.
5: Press the RESUME once within 5 seconds and release the RESUME .
6: Press and HOLD RESUME for two seconds or more and release it.
7: Press and HOLD RESUME for two seconds or more and release it.
8: Place Cartridge back in
9: Unplug AC Power Cord to set data.

I hope this info helps.

Mine started out like another posters above where the colors were all wrong and then I eventually got the "wrong cartridge" message. I tried the procedure above and in my case it did not work for me. I ended up going the new printhead route and everything works fine now. 41.77 + 6.00 s&h + local tax from canon parts.

Re: wrong cartridge by Anonymous (3/29/06 6:53 AM) reply+1 + / -
I have had a similar prob with a Canon MPC600 and after many conversations with Canon people decided that the head was dead and so risk washing it with wet cloth - guess what - it works fine again!
What I think happens is that the ink clog (glycerine used in all these inks) in the head or at the point where the cartridge joins the head. Be careful - this is elctricity and water!!! Wash off both with water on a strong tissue and then let it dry gently till you are convinced there is no water left on the electrics.
May take a sheet or two to run the inks back through and get the colours right...

Multipass F80 Check Printer Error by jodev (9/2/06 2:47 PM) reply+3 + / -
Can anyone give me the reset code for the Canon Multipass F80? I recently recieved a code error and when I checked my owner's manual it tells me to take the printer to Canon Customer Care to have the waste ink tank replaced immediately...like it is going to melt down if I don't do it RIGHT THIS SECOND... Anyway, after reviewing this site, I am assuming all that is needed is to reset the printer codes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No Subject by menuetta (11/10/06 1:22 PM) reply + / -
I've tried the sequence provided by Kevin above, but it doesn't seem to help. Unless, of course, I'm doing it wrong... My understanding of this error message is that it refers to the printhead, not the actual ink cartridges. So in the steps below, are you referring to the actual ink cartridges, or the entire printhead? (I haven't replaced any ink in awhile; I've been printing just fine --cartridges are about half used-- and then, just like that, one day I can't print any more.) Also, if I'm understanding correctly, steps 5, 6, and 7 are basically just "press RESUME for min. 2 seconds and then let go," right? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am a student and cannot afford a new printer!

Thanks in advance!

Irene

Can anyone tell me where I can find the meaning of the ssw codes. I have a multipass F60 and get the general error "Check printer, press resume". I am able to access the SSW area but I do not understand any of the codes - what are they supposed to be and I have not been able to find a service manual for this. I got the printer for free and this is the last resort before I junk it. Thanks.

Hello, For all of you looking to get at the waste ink pads,... they are in the absolute bottom of the machine, there are several of them and they are stacked one on top of the other. Skimom, if you have reset the waste ink error, why not post how you did it. I also don't understand how you could wash one soft one and one hard one and not have seen all of them. They are right together. I will give you one clue. The waste ink pads don't get that full. I've taken apart many printers and I have yet to find one where the waste ink penetrated beyone the very bottom 2 pads. They are the ones that are directly below the Purge unit that sucks the ink out of the printhead and "Squirts" in onto the pads. Not very sophisticated. The other ink pads are about 3/8" ink thick very heavy felt material that runs below the paper exit path. The design is terrible if you ask me. All the ink dumps to the two small pads that are lower that the really big pads and somehow Canon thinks because these pads are touching, enough "Wicking" will occur to "Spread" the ink to the other pads. Well it never happens. The two small pads just get soaked and then the ink puddles around them and on the bottom of the printer plastic case. Now you know why can has put into the diagnostics such a critical check of how much ink has been dumped and locks up the printer. The setting is 7% of the total expected volume. Pretty small number. I guess they don't want to a suite for getting ink all over someone expensive furniture. For example, I had a Canon i560 for three years, and used it as a primary printer for all my stuff. When I finally sold it, I took it apart and cleaned everything. The waste ink had saturated the 2 small pads but not much else. The other 3 pads are 3/8" thick and 3x9" in size.

For those of you willing to do a lot of work, here is what you don't want to hear. You have to take the machine completely apart and take out all of the main assemblies, including the main carriage assembly. The ink waste pads are under that unit and you can't get at any of them unless you take it out. There is not a half inch of space around anything. I would never attempt to do this if you don't have both the Service Manual and the Parts Manual that contains the exploded views of all major parts,...along with a lot of guts and some prior technical experience. One wrong move and you could damage 6 parts that will cost you the entire printer. So be careful out there.

I have a F50 and I found this solution on another thread and it worked for me. The solution is to clean the optical sensor. Here are the steps needed to do this:

Turn on the printer.
Open the top like you are going to replace the ink cartridges.
After the print head moves to the middle, unplug the printer.
Gently move the print head to the right about 4 inches.
With a flashlight, look under the left deck about 2 inches and slightly forward of the where the print head would be and locate the optical sensor.
The optical sensor is on the floor of this area and is surrounded by a metal shell. It is roughly rectangular about 2" by .5" with a small area near the right side not covered in metal. The actual sensors are small (pin head) devices located in this area.
Take a dry Q-tip and wipe the small area surrounded by metal shield.
Remove any tools (flashlight, Q-tips, your hands, etc) from the inside of the printer.
Verify all foreign items have been removed from the inside of the printer.
Plug the printer in.
Wait for it to boot up and center the print head.
Close the top.

It worked for me. I hope it helps you.

I have tried the Waste Tank reset codes, but that didn't work. I also tried cleaning the optical sensor, but that didn't work either. I even unplugging and replugging the printer while holding the resume key, but that didn't help either.

2 things to note during start up, 1 - the print head does not move to the center, and 2 - a page is sucked in part way.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Kathy, you have a paper jam!
With the unit turned off, try to slowly and carefully pull the paper back out without tearing it. Best to grab from both edges of the paper and slowly pull. The problem is your paper feed sensor is activated and thats why you have your error code. It should be clear when the papers removed.

I have a Canon F-50. During my long-ago attempt at using off-brand tanks, it took a spell of actually printing GREEN when told to print RED. I (after doing a double 'clean printhead' function) limited to the use of ONLY genu-wine Canon cartridges and have had absolutely no problems. OEM cartridges are dirt cheap in E Bay for the older model printers such as this.
.
No 'refill kits'! No non-oem tanks! Particularly when OEM are available REAL cheap on E Bay.
