 | hp 5110 by dave (9/8/04 5:13 PM) | + / - | I am getting an error message that the carriage is jammed. I have reset the printer, oiled the rod, cleaned the plastic strip, etc. as suggested by HP. No luck -- still stuck! This printer is only 2 years old and hasn't seen much service. Anyone have any suggestions before i let my dog chew on this thing??? (He'll probably be more help than HP!!!)

 | Re: hp 5110 by Bert (9/8/04 5:34 PM) | +1 + / - | Your printer uses the same unreliable mechanism as the notorious Deskjet 3820. HP does not sell spare parts for it so its scrap. Find a 'lightly used' Officejet K80 on Ebay. You can use the 15 cartridge in it until is goes dry and then revert to the higher capacity 45. The 78 is a straight accross swap. The K80 is a good machine. If you want something new, take your pick. I don't recommend any of them.

 | Re: hp 5110 & v40 carriage jam by chris (9/8/04 6:26 PM) | + / - | There used to be a long threaded discussion on this topic at this site just a few days ago. A lot of people were complaining about the v40 and 5110 officejet models. It seems that a part in the carriage mechanism breaks about 1 month after the warranty expires. Must be a design flaw (hopefully not on purpose). Seems that a few people have e-mailed the CEO of HP and received a replacement model. I will do the same. I wonder if the HP legal department tapped "fixyourownprinter" on the shoulder and maybe that's why the discussion thread disappeared. The original link was http://fixyourownprinter.com/printer/new/15555.html Good luck!

 | Re: hp 5110 by Greg (9/9/04 10:53 AM) | + / - | If you Google for the link that Chris provided, and click on the "cached" link in Google, you can still review the thread. I have saved the page on my local computer if anyone needs it. My 5110 exhibited the same problems as yours, and I have been told by HP (after emailing the CEO) that it is not a deisgn flaw, therefore THEY INTENDED FOR IT TO BREAK when it did! What a P.O.S. product and company.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Bert (9/9/04 12:07 PM) | + / - | Do you really expect HP to admit that they let a flakey design slip through? No company in their right mind designs something to break on schedule. A lot of them broke while still under warranty which probably cost HP a bundle. I sent a 5110 back and they were so short on replacements that they returned a completely different printer. I suspect that in their rush to market a low cost printer that they didn't do a proper life test.

 | Re: hp 5110 by dave (9/9/04 12:37 PM) | + / - | Bert -- I was thinking of replacing my dead 5110 with a new 4215 or possibly a 5510. They are both compact and seem to deliver good quality when I test them at the store. Are these also problem machines? Would the K80 be a better choice?
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Bert (9/9/04 1:14 PM) | + / - | There haven't been that many posts on the OJ 5510. This could mean that problems are being handled under warranty or its basically a reliable machine. What will happen in couple of years, who knows. HP replaced my broken 5110 with one of them. I gave it away because of high operating costs typical of most new printers, regardless of who makes them (somebody gave me the 5110). I like the last generation of printers for my personal use, specifically the ones based on the Deskjet 900 series.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Daniel (9/20/04 7:24 PM) | + / - | I have the same problem. This is ridiculous! Both the 15555 and 20199 threads related to this topic have been removed from this site. Both threads are still cached in Google: 66.102.7.104 www.google.com.au I assume HP have applied some pressure to shut these threads down.
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Greg (9/20/04 8:07 PM) | + / - | I emailed the CEO as others have suggested, got a call back from a Quality Care Manager, and he said they would send me a REFURBISHED 5510 for $25 less than I can buy a NEW 5510 for online! They said there is no sign that there is a defect in the design, to which I suggested that they must be designing it to break after 14 months, if it is not a defect. I think they are tired of dealing with US, and are shutting down the threads, and charging high prices for replacements. That was the last HP I buy for me or my company. If they ALL are designed to break after a year, why pay more for the HP? Buy an Epson or Samsung. I tore my machine apart last weekend and drilled a small hole in the small gear where the tab had broken off. I inserted a "finish nail" and clipped off the excess length. Put it back together and it is working for now. Good Luck. Greg

 | Re: hp 5110 by moe (9/29/04 12:41 PM) | + / - | The previous threads were not removed because of intimidation. We don't intimidate that easy. We did have some problems with our server and had to switch the search engine to Google, which doesn't search that well. We'll have it all running pretty soon. In the meantime, I think those are the same gears used in the equally sucky 3820 printer. I salvaged a pristine set out of one the other day that was FUBAR because of another problem.

 | Re: hp 5110 - HP replacing my printer! by Lorrimer (9/30/04 1:45 PM) | + / - | I had the exact same problem -- carriage broke a week after the warranty expired on my 5110. Called HP, ended up emailing them (email support is free after the warranty expires). And they are replacing my printer for free! Let's see if it really gets here. I mentioned this forum and how screwed up their policies are. Don't know if that made a difference, but eventually they admitted that they do now have a policy to replace 5110s after warranty when the carriage problem happens. So keep pestering them until they give you a new printer. The guy even offered to give me new ink cartridges to replace the ones in the stuck carriage. It did take quite a bit of back-and-forth, including lots of mentioning how disappointed I am in HP as a company, etc, before they admitted they had this policy in place.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Greg (9/30/04 2:04 PM) | + / - | I am amazed at the variation in responses that HP seems to have to our problem. I contacted the company by Live web support, then Telephone, then emailed the CEO. A "Quality Case Manager" called me back and said I had to pay $90 for a re-F'ed 5110 or $140 for a re-furbished 5510. I went back and forth about this web site, and how I would not be able to recommend any HP products for my company if that was their policy. They said sorry. Lorrimer, maybe you could ask your contact at HP to post a message on this site about the correct procedures to get a replacement. As a minimum, could you give us their email or phone number? I'm sure many 5110 owners would like to give them a call. Thanks in advance.

Glad I found y'all again. THat would be a good idea for anyone with HP to post info on replacement/repair options for us less fortunate ones who keep getting the run around. I still haven't been able to fix the gear prob with mine as of yet...so if you can help, please do...thanx

 | Re: hp 5110 by Lorrimer (10/8/04 11:24 PM) | + / - | Just got my free replacement printer, plus new ink cartridges. It will most likely work great for the 90 days the new warranty covers, then break again. But hey, they gave me a new printer after the warranty expired, so I'm not complaining. This is the email address I was back-and-forthing with: NACMSupport@hp.com Every second email from them was a form letter saying I should call the (not free) help line. Every time I got that, I emailed back explaining that I was choosing to use their free email support instead. Eventually they sent me an email containing these lines: "We understand from your e-mail that the Officejet 5110 is generating a carriage jam and all troubleshooting has not resolved the issue. We have created a case for this issue: 3207946665. Please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-HP-INVENT (1-800-474-6836). A telephone agent would be pleased to assist you. There will be no charge for the call and the unit will be replaced." When I called that number, though, they told me there was no way they could replace my printer, that the email message must be some kind of mistake. They had no idea what I was talking about. So I emailed that address again, explaining what had happened. Very quickly I got a phone call from a different section of HP -- and this guy knew what was going on, told me I must have been talking to "the Windows people", and got my information (including a credit card number, which seemed sketchy but it seems to have worked out). I should have gotten this dude's name for you all. I will email them back and try to get them to post their official policy here. He told me specifically that their policy is to replace 5110s with this specific problem. Good luck!

 | Re: hp 5110 by Greg (10/11/04 7:26 AM) | + / - | Lorrimer, Thanks for that detailed account of your resolution. I will try that avenue. For the record, I had previously received a call from Michael, a Quality Case Manager at HP, Phone 888-347-2770, Option 2, Extension 69273, and he was unwilling to help. Did they send you a refurbished 5110 or something different?
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by dave (10/11/04 7:35 AM) | + / - | Thanks to finding fixyourprinter.com and reading these e-mails, I just received a replacement 5110 from HP at no cost. As suggested by one e-mail, I used the HP support site to e-mail Carly Fiorina and complained that the 5110 has a defect. Within two weeks an HP rep called and verified my serial number and sent a replacement 5110. I don't know how long it will last but the HP rep said they had found a defective part in some units.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Lorrimer (10/11/04 8:46 AM) | + / - | Greg, I'm not sure if it's refurbished or new. Do you know how I can tell?
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Greg (10/11/04 8:57 AM) | + / - | Lorrimer, I imagine the only way to tell if it is refurbished would be to look for signs of wear or scuff marks on the outside. I don't believe that HP has any new 5110's available, as they have been replaced by a newer model. My guess is that if you have a 5110, it is refurbished. I had heard that they may be replacing bum 5110s with 5510s, and that is why I asked. Again, Thanks for the info.

THE PRINTER FAILED JUST OUT OF THE 1ST WARRENTY, YEP...1ST THE ERROR THAT COULD NOT BE CLEARED. To sucker me more HP charged me to troubleshoot it and could not ($25 dollars later) and the replacement they sold me had the (I see now) infamous unclearable "carraige jam" error after another few months. Seems they probably put a 13 month timer on this CRAP. CRAP product that shows the industry is selling razors cheap and trying to make money on the blades as it was an ink hog too. It made nice copies and printed color well on plain paper. It did decent scans. Several people tried to set it up to send or recieve FAXs it never successfully did either. This is an awful product and should be recalled by HP. I know I would sure like a refund! This is the last HP product that I will buy. | Re: hp 5110 by Lindsey (10/21/04 4:46 AM) | + / - | Alright everyone, here is how it works. The Officejet 5110 has been failing after about 13 months, thats no secret. HP knows about the issue, and are replacing each model this happens with provided they cannot repair it. Don't get your hopes up though, HP will NOT replace it with a new 5110, it will always be refurbished, but hey, at least it works. If you call them and they say they are going to charge you $30, that bull. They've been authorized not to charge for 5110 carriage jams ONLY. If there's something else wrong, they'll charge you. If the windows support won't help, call the Mac support. Mac support has been consistent in not charging.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Kirby (10/22/04 3:51 AM) | + / - | Could someone who has fixed this gear please provide step by step instructions on how to access it? The rollers on mine appear to be working fine in the startup self-test, but I am getting the "carriage jam" message, and I do see one gear at the bottom that doesn't turn when I manually turn the rollers.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Kathy (10/22/04 6:22 AM) | + / - | Well, I spoke with the HP poodles and they said my warantee went out on Sept 30, 2004. I just started getting this error message about, I'd say, 3 weeks ago.....no kidding folks. Soooooo if I want to have it replaced with a refurbished one it's going to cost me $150.00 tax and all. They will send me a FedEx box for me to ship it in and they pay the shipping. I'm still thinking about it, I pulled my old printer out of the closet and it works fine, it just doesn't have a fax on it and I only used to the fax to look for a job. Hummm.....decisions, decisions....

 | Re: hp 5110 by Dan (10/29/04 2:43 PM) | + / - | A member by the name of Cogtx posted very detailed instructions on finding the broken gear at this link below. The gear that breaks is at the very bottom of tghe assembly, and can not be seen until you follow all of the steps. I've tried several different fixes for my own broken gear, but the did not hold up to the tremendous torque applied. *** It is quite an easy job to find the broken gear, but since HP does not supply a replacement part ~ approx 22 cents ~ it is almost a waste of time. pg.photos.yahoo.com Everyone could fix thier own printer if the parts were available, so everyone should demand HP make them available! Ok, rant over... but I look at this printer in my office everyday in pieces and it pisses me off - no reason for it. Happy Halloween!

 | Re: hp 5110 by moe (10/29/04 5:56 PM) | + / - | I've been posting for several weeks that I have a pristine set of gears in my desk that I spent some time extricating from a FUBAR printer. I'm open to offers. They don't do me any good sitting in the desk. I can't get anywhere near what my time costs for the gears, but at least someone will be happy till they break again.

Each systematically died with the same carridge jam. I have little option due to the specific need for the product. If you are in the same situation I advise you only purchase HP with a extensive warranty. Also I suggest purchasing from SAM'S CLUB. Unlike Staples they will replace the product unlimited amount of times,so long as it is in the warranty period. Do not buy HP unless you must, I am very dissapointed at the direguard they have for the customer base. DO NOT PURCHASE HP unless you must they have willfully defrauded myself and others out of time and money.

 | RESET by Jeff (11/9/04 11:35 AM) | + / - | remove power plug, now hold 6 and #. While holding plug in and hold buttons until full reset has occured and machine turns off. Now press power and if your lucky and the gears are not striped the logic board will reset. How long this will fix it is unknown, however it is better than nothing.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Sindia (11/11/04 12:49 AM) | + / - | I have the same "carriage jam" problems like you all on hp 5110... the only difference was that it was purchased in China. I was sent to Shanghai China last year to work, and being a loyal hp customer, I bought my printer in the hp brand... Very disappointed! I have never really used this printer... at the most, maybe 20 times, and it is now broekn.... Of course it is also after a year of warranty. HP in China would not repair it because they said they don't the parts to repair it. The only option is to replace it with a brand new one and I would have to pay close to $200 USD for replacement. I bought mine last year for about $300... What does this work? I have tried contacting the "customer service headquarter" in China, and they could not tell me anything different. For those of you who wrote a letter to the CEO and got a response. Could you please tell me how you guys did it? Or perhaps if any of you have a good suggestion to how I could get this issue resolved, please let me know. Thank you very much!

 | Re: hp 5110 by c (11/11/04 3:12 PM) | + / - | i am really grateful for this forum. i had the same problem everyone has had with the "carriage jam." however, after finding out some people were able to replace their printer (even though out of warranty), i tried an email message, which was answered immediately, but basically told me to call hp support. so i did and of course, i met resistance. but i was polite and just kept telling them i knew it was possible to have it replaced and asked for someone elso who could help me; i.e., that i knew hp had replaced others since apparently this was a machine defect. i also told them i didn't have to pay anything (not even shipping.) after going up the chain through 4-5 people, i finally spoke with someone in the main office. he authorized shipment of the replacement without any questions, and i received a refurbished machine in a couple weeks. thanks again for all the help others provided.

 | Re: hp 5110 by kenny (11/13/04 7:10 AM) | + / - | I bought two 5110 xi's and after 13 months one carrage shot craps. Then 4 monthes later the other went. I called HP and they said they would send me a 100$ check if I bought at least a 250$ HP printer. They kept saying " well it's out of warranty" I said I wouldn't be calling but they both had the same problem. They said "this offer will be on the table for 5 days then it will be retracted" I said it's a shame that you just cant take care of this problem and I was never going to purchase HP equipment and tell everyone the same. So I went out a bought a Lexmark X125 that does the same as the 5110 for $78 at Office Max. I works fine...

|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Bert (11/29/04 9:40 PM) | + / - | When you change a print cartridge, the 5110 will ask you to print an alignment page. Follow the instructions on the pages that are printed. Use any white paper.

 | Re: hp 5110 by MIkenrose (12/6/04 8:34 AM) | + / - | I, too, had the carriage jam and thanks too the many posters here I am receiving a new printer as well -- even though my printer is out of warranty. I received many emails saying I should contact a service center and pay to have the unit repaired. After Emailing Carly and several others that I found on this site, I finally received a call and they worked with me on this and said a refurb. 5110 is on the way. I gave them my cc# and she gave me the tracking number. It was all to be free but I decided to pay $10.00 (plus tax) to have 2 day shipping instead of 7 day shipping. I have a Case # of 3208753880, if it helps anyone. Thank you to everyone who took the time to post here!!

 | Re: hp 5110 by Lori (12/11/04 1:17 PM) | + / - | It makes me wonder how many closet HP printer haters are really out there... But I have you all beat--I've gone through TWO of them, and it's only been 19 months since my first purchase of the HP 5110xi piece of crap. Fortunately mine bit the dust BEFORE the warantee ran out and they sent me a new one (probably not new, as it looked a little different). But now this one is screaming the same blasted cartridge jam message; the same one all you got. I don't know if I want to try to get a replacement or not, as my son (in-law) suggested that he give us a new Dell or Lexmark for Christmas because he and his parents have had theirs a year with no problems. Makes me scared because right around now is when the problems seem to arise. He also recommended doing a drive-by chucking into someone's driveway whom we all dislike. Sounded like a good idea! Anyone who actually got a replacement printer and is semi-satisfied, please post and let us all know exactly who you contacted, what was said, etc. and if you would recommend this course of action for the rest of us disgruntled HP owners. And anyone who has a Lexmark or Dell please also give your input so we know if that would be a good investment as well.

 | Re: hp 5110 by kenny (12/11/04 5:48 PM) | + / - | Well we tied... I had two of them as I posted before. After getting no help from HP I decided to toss out the crap in the trash. I then bought a Lexmark 125 all in one and It did work fine for about 5 days then it wouldn't recieve any faxes. I worked with Lexmark for 2 weeks with tech and they didn't know what was wrong. Lexmark always took 2 to 3 days to answer my replies. That's just as bad as HP. I took the Lexmark back and have two weeks of trouble free service with the Epson CX6600. 3 in 1 printer. Then I bought a cheapie fax only machine. So far so good. I will say that this Epson sounds very tight and is very quiet running. Both the HP and Lexmark sounded clunky. I hope that this Epson delivers the goods!

 | completely unsatisfied with HP by Sindia (12/12/04 7:23 PM) | + / - | I was very disappointed by the unprofessional staff and customer service department that I encountered. After writing several email messages to the Excutive Board at HP, I finally gave up. My printer is still sitting there and not working, and HP does not seem to care about my concern and has not offered any solutions to my problems. I am highly disappointed with their products and HP as a company. I still don't understand why an initial simple request for ink cartridge replacement has evolved to a carriage jam and eventually a need to purchase a new machine(as suggested by HP). It still makes me wonder if this is their strategy to make their customers continue to invest and purchase their products! In any case, I will unlikely to purchase another HP product especially with the extremely poor service that I received.

 | Re: Re: hp 5110 by mbermingham (1/6/05 12:50 PM) | + / - | I called HP and gave them your case number. They said all case numbers now start with 7 and that they have not used a case number starting with a 3 in two years. They said if I had a current case number they could help me. Any chance you still have the packing list that came with your replacement printer you can give us some shipping numbers for reference?

 | Re: hp 5110 by ramjetz (1/23/05 6:38 PM) | + / - | My HP5110xi just gave me a paper jam carriage jam message. No paper but I could hear what sounded like a gear not being able to engage. I am a disabled vet use my my computor and printer alot. This is my 2nd printer from HP. The 1st one got stolen which was allright because it didn't like windows xp. This one was on its 2nd ink cart allmost ready to buy the 3rd Black cart when it went bad. Called India on the #s posted here. They lady said they needed $55 to talk the techs for a year. They could replace for $89 or upgrade I told Sara I don't need a printer that I was doing a comp on service grading all computor companys to see how they handle customer complaints that my report would be coming out soon. I then said goodbye knowing I had got the last word. I am sure the machine can be fixed. I will continue to have fun with them. Where can I get gears for this machine? Would be fun to fix the "All IN ONE AND DONE" Printer from WHO-LET PACKER.
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Bert (1/23/05 9:28 PM) | +1 + / - | As has been said many times, there are no gears available for the 5110 from HP. They would probably like to forget that this machine and others that used the same mechanism (Officejet V40 and Deskjet 3820) ever existed. I don't recommend any new printer from any manufacturer over another. I do like the Officejet K80 or K80xi. The K80 was made before the cost cutting that produced the unreliable 5110 and it's relatives. It uses the same cartridges as the 5110 and will also accept the higher capacity 45 cartridge in place of the 15. If you are a fix-it person and want to get a working one on eBay, I can tell you how to return it to like new condition for very little money. I wouldn't even waste time opening the 5110 other than to remove the paper pusher as a spare part for a K80.
Keep in mind that any all-in-one is going to be less reliable long term than a printer only model because of increased complexity. The highest casualty item on otherwise mechanically solid machines is typically the scanner (other than cats and two year olds). If the scanner survives, the mechanism, like any other mechanical device will need to be cleaned occasionally. I have brough back to life many 'failed' older HPs that only needed to be cleaned.

 | Re: hp 5110 by ldkirby (2/16/05 8:35 AM) | + / - | Well, last week had the same issue with carriage jam, came here, read all the complaints, then emailed HP.
Within 5 minutes they returned my email stating that they are aware of the problem and now it is policy to replace ALL 5110 printers for free. All I need to do is return the faulty one to them-at my cost. Not the best remedy as I am no longer thrilled with the product, but at least they are doing something.
BTW, my printer was more than 1 year out of warranty.

they require a credit card in case the old unit is not returned to them... so far an excellent experience with HP. most likely thanks to forums like this!

|
 | Re: Re: Re: hp 5110 by Anonymous (2/22/05 10:25 AM) | + / - | I wanted to get it fixed but HP was the one who brought up replacing it not me. Although I do think that since the printer has a very bad record it is what the company should do to keep the good faith/loyalty of a customer!

 | Re: hp 5110 by ldkirby (2/23/05 5:32 AM) | + / - | Got my new- not refurbished-printer yesterday. It is such a treat to not hear that grinding sound!
Prepaid UPS return, too. We'll see how long this one lasts, but at least for now I don't need to buy a new one.
As to the statement that HP wont do this forever...HP is huge. This printer probably costs them $20.00 to produce. If they can keep their name clean for such a small amount of money, then yes I do think they will continue with the customer service. Just so you know, they aren't giving freebies. They require all the serial numbers off old models and the old model to be returned.
You state you have only had your printer for 4 months...we'll see you in about a year.

I emailed HP at the NACMSupport@hp.com address named earlier late last night and got an email response back this morning. It suggested I try two troubleshooting exercises (neither worked) and then call Customer Care at 800.474.6836 for more help. What I found most interesting is the email response from HP specifically told me to 1)be sure to say I'd had the 5110 for less than 1 year and 2)to be sure I reached the Macintosh division. I thought this odd because my email explicitly said I'd purchase it over 18 months ago and made no mention of Macintosh. It was as if the email gave me my script to get the replacement 5110. I've just been confirmed through Customer Care to get the replacement 5110 and replacement ink cartridges with one phone call. Thanks so much for all of the info posted here.

 | HP 5110 Remove & Check Black Cartridge by manage4u (3/20/05 5:18 PM) | + / - | After much research primilary on this site, I have concluded that all HP Products are JUNK. Thanks to those who have posted before us with the same problems and their resolutions.
Based on their information, I have written HP and have copied my message below for other to reuse to HP -
Subj: Known HP5110 Carriage Jam Error Date: 3/20/2005 7:24:09 PM Eastern Standard To: NACMSupport@hp.com
Gentlemen, I am yet another victim of HP. Over the past four (4) years, I have purchase three (3) HP Printers at a cost of over US $600 Date Model Price 12/26/02 T45 $199 + s/h 06/12/03 HP2110 $215 + s/h 09/25/03 HP5110 $149 + s/h To say that I'm disgusted with HP would be an understatement. I also have an HP LJ4 - ALSO DEAD that I paid $1,495 back in 1996 that is a rather large paper weight. I was looking into a replacement kit but have not had the time to work on that problem but now I have NO PRINTERS and another issue thanks to HP. What is happening with HP? The company use to represent QUALITY and INGUINITY in an array of products. It seems that HP has created a line of product with built in obsolence and failures whereby the products cannot be repaired and replacement parts do not exist. Are your products disposable after 1 year when the warranty expires? That is what it looks like in the market and judging by other consumer posts, it is what HP is all about - GREED!. Besides being a disappointed consumer, I am also a disappointed shareholder. I'm sorry to say that I have always purchased HP printers and computers (am I stupid) because I felt that they represented quality products and as a shareholder, I wanted to support the firm with my purchases. I must now admit I feel scammed. It this how HP returns value to their customer and shareholders by SCREWING PEOPLE? As a result of my investigation and the online community, I have learned that I am not the only person to experience QUALITY FAILURES with HP products namely this HP 5110. I also understand that you have replaced other HP 5110 out of warranty - see thread below - QUOTE
Re: hp 5110 by ldkirby (2/16/05 8:35 AM) Well, last week had the same issue with carriage jam, came here, read all the complaints, then emailed HP.

UNQUOTE In closing. I would therefore appreciate the same level of service and replacement. I have a good number of unused ink cartridges and will require that same unit unless of coarse, you would be willing to upgrade me based on my prior losses and stupid loyalty to HP Products. Thank you for your attention and I await your immediate response. I do however feel that a class action should be seriously explored at this stage given HPs poor track record, lack of customer service, inability to provide parts, service or reliability of any type. I would embrace and welcome joining such an action - ambulance attorney's where are you when we need you!!
PS - I have also enclosed other threads on this problem for you.

 | Re: hp 5110 by moe (3/20/05 6:24 PM) | + / - | I can understand your frustration, but HP isn't the only one putting out 13 month wonders. There are quite a few Brother threads dealing with 41 errors. Lexmarks are even more shoddily built. In short, the manufacturers are building what they perceive the public wants, namely cheap office machines that have everything but the kitchen sink in them. The name of the game is selling high priced ink cartridges, not printers. As for the HP4, it was built in the era where HP printers still had some quality. You should spend a few bucks and resurrect it. You won't get 9 years of service out of the cheap junk they're building nowadays.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Anonymous (3/25/05 12:13 PM) | + / - | Hi,
Thanks so much for this thread. I too had an unfixable carriage jam on my HP and as it was out of warranty I was ready to throw it away.
Anway after two calls to HP they still would not agree that they have a free replacement policy and they were going to charge $90.00 to send a replacement or $140.00 for a 5510.
Anyway i decided to try one more time and after getting the run around again I e-mailed this entire thread to the person I was speaking to while I was still on the phone. 2 minutes later I had a free printer on the way, it arrived today.
Thanks so much.

 | Re: hp 5110 PROBLEMS by manage4u (3/25/05 1:54 PM) | + / - | Well, HP "REFUSED" to replace my 5110 printer because my problem was "check black cartridge" although it is clearly the same issue that everyone is having i.e carriage jam ....
word to the wise ..... MAKE SURE THAT IF YOU CALL HP ON THIS PROBLEM, YOU SAY ITS A CARRIAGE JAM .... use those words and you can get a replacement even if it is out of warranty .... I'm not giving up! HP, you sucked too much of my money already on shotty products - NO MORE!

 | Re: hp 5110 by frogman (4/2/05 4:53 AM) | + / - | This machine is a HUGE dissapointment. Mine started jamming out of the box. turns out a wiring harness got wrapped around the feed tires in the back under the clean out drawer. Didn't matter anyway, couldn't get the software to install after 6 tries. Called the customer service number and got someone who swears he could fix it. I gave up after 20 minutes on the phone with this clown.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Anonymous (4/3/05 10:01 AM) | + / - | Thanks for all the information in this thread. I also had the carriage jam message. They called, and even though the printer was 9 months out of warranty they sent me a replacement refurbished printer.

Plastic vs Metal = plastic is gonna die first
if they woulda used metal for all the gears this woulda been a good setup.
i'll never buy a HP printer again knowing they use these cheap parts.

 | Re: hp 5110 by sbainb (4/5/05 9:07 AM) | + / - | Hey Lorrimer,
Thanks for all the advice on contacting HP. I followed your advice and I managed to get a free refurbished item with a 90 day warranty. I bought my unit in Oct 03 and it went defective Nov 04. I sat on the broken unit for six months trying to decide what to do with it, didn’t want to trash it because I had hardly used it and didn’t know if I could get if fixed for a fraction of a new one.
Anyway, called HP and spoke with the operator, told her I wanted to make a complaint about a defective item. I then spoke to a women who did not want to help me. I explained about the carriage jam and went on to say that I had hardly used the unit and that I was still on the original ink cartridge, but the item is broken and I want a new one. She told me the unit is out of warranty and I should speak to technical support, for a fee. I told her I would not pay them to help me support their mistake and informed her of this website and all the identical problems consumers are having with this item.
She made me hold for about 5 mins and then connected me to a guy in technical help by the name of Joe. He was very helpful and asked me to describe the problem. I explained that the printer carriage was jammed and the printer head unit that holds the cartridges is stuck on the right hand side but will not move, it tries to but just jams and makes an awful clicking sound and jumps a little. The only time it will move to the left is when I raise the cartridge access panel and then it moves smoothly across.
He said that they were having difficulty with the 5110 and that they had extended the warranty period. He said he would mail a replacement unit complete with a prepaid box to ship back my old unit. He took a credit card number as collateral in case I didn’t send back the old one. He apologized for the trouble this caused and assured me they had taken care of the problem. We'll see in about 13 months, provided the replacement unit arrives!!!
Thanks again to everyone who offered up advice. If you are having problems, please don’t give up, just bug the hell out of them and demand a new unit!

 | Re: hp 5110 by Lisa Harpe (4/7/05 7:42 AM) | + / - | I called HP about the "carriage jam" error. I received this error and my printer will not print even though I can get the carriage to move to the left side. An HP quality case manager called me back and informed me that because my carriage moves, this is not the same problem that everyone on the internet is having. Who out there has a carriage that will move but still gets the carriage jam error which renders the printer useless?

 | Officejet v40 All in One by Debi (4/13/05 11:50 AM) | + / - | Can anyone help me? I've got a pain in the butt printer it was working great until yesterday i scanned a picture into my folder on computer as always then turn off Officejet v40 when i was done as always when the lights on front panel flases like crazy & i read Error c00F0401 Turn power off & on. I did just that but it keeps doing the same thing. Then i contacted HP for help & got same message 3 times! Like this Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I understand from your e-mail that issue still persists even after following the steps suggested in the previous mail.
This error message can occur if the all-in-one has been stored incorrectly. To resolve this issue I suggest you to follow the steps suggested in below:
Unplug the power cord to the all-in-one. Open the rear access door of the all-in-one. Rotate the paper feed rollers in an upward direction. Reinstall the rear access door. Reconnect the power cord.
However if the issue still persists I suggest you to follow the steps suggested below:
Perform a partial reset on your Officejet V series by holding the button combination given below, while plugging in the power cord.
CAUTION: A partial reset will reset or clear the following information:
* Returns the user settings to the factory defaults. * Delete language and country settings.
Press and hold # and 3 on the front panel keypad while plugging in the power cord.
If the issue still persists then follow the steps suggested below:
Perform a semi-full reset on your Officejet V series by holding the button combination given below, while plugging in the power cord.
CAUTION: A semi-full reset will reset or clear the following information:
* Return the user settings to the factory defaults. * Delete language and country settings on some models. * Fax logs. * Fax headers. * Fax speed dial information.
Press and hold # and 6 on the front panel keypad, while plugging in the power cord.
This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.
You may receive an e-mail survey regarding your e-mail support experience. We would appreciate your feedback.

 | Re: hp 5110 by RoachX (5/1/05 1:24 AM) | + / - | Hi i have an officejet v40 and initially stumbled across this forum looking for a way to use my v40 as a black only printer with an empty colour cartridge installed. But upon reading every one's problems i'm more concerned about keeping it in working order now.
Apparently this build up of dripping ink is the main culprit. I would like to do some preventative maintanence and get at the ink build up before in damages any gears. Are there any guides or tips for taking apart the v40 and doing so?
Thank you
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Debi (5/1/05 4:49 PM) | + / - | Hi RoachX Sorry to inform you my friend but there is NO HELP for this printer anymore. After contacting service & techs i found out the warranty & the printer are now consider (obsolete)useless to HP main people because of the newer version unfortunately i now have a big printer that has great features but is consider junk now to HP :( To take it apart you will need a 10-T screw head (looks almost like a Phillips screwdriver but has six points instead of four)then lift up cover (where you load your papers for copying)in the back of unit. You will see more screws like the ones you just removed be sure not to pull the wires out. Then you will see where the wires end at a white clip like head you can pull then out from there it wouldn't mess up the printer this will allow you to get to the under panel. The rest is pretty easy you just pull the whole thing (cover) toward the back of unit & left up at same time it's just held in place by little tabs. Try not to break any thou :) Then clean the unit be sure of what you use it to clean with i used windex on the plastic parts & rubbing alcohol on the ink heads connections (where ink cartridge meet the back aka gold panel) anything to Strong will eat like acid & damage the printer OK? I hope this helps you? But honestly its trail by guessing because HP wouldn't help. I had to learn the hard way so if you still have your receipt from the store where you purchased printer i highly recommend you do a trade-in Office Depot & Office Max will gladly do so. Don't know about other stores like Best Buy etc.., So good luck you will need it.

 | Gears, Gears, Gears . . . The Montley Defective by powruser (5/28/05 10:19 AM) | + / - | Same problem as most everyone else. I purchased the hp v40 in mid-year 2003 in the U.S. It worked fine and I left it at my home in the U.S. After a move to Italy, I purchased a similar model locally, in Italy-March 2004, (instead of shipping my v40) which was the hp 5110. By January 2005, while at my home in the U.S. for the holidays, the v40 that I purchased in the U.S. suffered the same fate as many more in this thread . . . the infamous "Carriage Jam". I took the printer apart and discovered the problem with the printer head cleaning dock not returning to its home position causing the carriage to jam on it, but I did not dig too deep for the problem and instead scrapped the unit. The v40 lasted 18 months from date of purchase.
Today my hp 5110, that I bought in Italy, suffered the same fate as the v40 bought in the U.S. . . . "Carriage Jam". This seemed more than just coincidence that both similar printers bought on 2 different continents have the same problem, so after taking it apart, I discovered the root of the issue to be the broken nylon torsion gear for the printer cleaning head dock assembly. With nothing to lose, I attempted to fuse the 2 shaft collars of the gears together by melting them together. This seemed to work great . . . the gear was much stronger than the factory assembly, BUT, I soon learned that these gears must move the 270 degrees before catching to the opposing gear in order to function properly. After making this modification, my major problem turned into paper jams, because the fused gears caused the plastic fingers (where the paper is discharged) to not retract fully before the paper is discharged. Evidently the gears need to be separated and lock at a 270 degree turn in order to work properly. My hp 5110 lasted 15 months from date of purchase.
From everything that I've read on this thread, this seems to be an epidemic. As in my case. I have invested $600 for 2 similar printers that both bit the dust at about the same time from date of purchase and I would not have made the same mistake twice if I had not bought the 5110 6 months before the v40 died.
I wished I had read this thread before!
I've heard of defects, but what a P.O.S. Even if HP will become the leader of the comp./tech. world, I will be buying from 4th ranked suppliers before buying another HP or their many affiliates. No more HP for me!
In my case: HP Invent . . . Horrible Product!

 | Re: hp 5110 by moe (5/28/05 1:12 PM) | + / - | If you check the 3820 threads, they use the same POS engine as the 5110/V40 do. Same gears, same problem. Interestingly enough, HP is replacing out of warranty 3820s with newer models. I guess a case could be made that if they're replacing a 3820 because of defective gears that they are acknowledging were badly designed, then the same should also be true for a 5110/V40. It's worth a try. You're armed with all the knowledge and experience from this forum, you can give them a good argument on it. If it works, then you've paved the road for all the other people who are suffering the same fate. Before you go knocking HP, you can read all the Brother 41 error threads. You'll just be trading one problem for another. The truth is that all the mfgs. are cutting corners to make MFCs that barely make it through the warranty period. They make the money on the ink and when it breaks and you discover it's cheaper to buy a new one, the cycle begins all over. Let us know if you meet with success. The best way to get back at HP is twist their arm to give you a new MFC, then you'll open the floodgates and they'll have to do the same for everyone else. That will cost them more than losing you as a customer would. They wouldn't even notice that. If they have to replace enough of their equipt., maybe they'll start building them better.
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Debi (5/28/05 10:26 PM) | + / - | I totally agree with MOE. The all mighty dollar is the only way that HP will improve their printers (if they lose enough customers they will lose money that's how business works) but it will take over 2000 or more?complaints just to get noticed because there are well over a million customers in USA alone. Not even half of UK & Asia to get them to improve their printers to peak working order. Sounds strange but if you make a product to breakdown after a certain length of time people needing that product will run out & buy another & another. This sadly is the way of all business in the world. So how do they get customers? Easy make printers with FAULTS but tell no one so they can sell & get return customers in a no win loop. BUY more printers keep them in business. FOOL More customers stay in business. Unfortunately I'm a victim i need the printer for personal & business purposes NO CHOICE that's how they get you & me. Sadder still compared to other MF printers on the market today HP has one good quality their printers with normal use out last the others at least 1 or 2 years before breaking down.

 | Re: hp 5110 by SarahM (6/15/05 2:16 PM) | + / - | I've encountered the same carriage jam on my machine. It claims something is jammed, but I am the master of unclearing paper jams. I found this site through googling. Thanks for the support, at least now I know its not my fault.
|
 | HP 5110 - free one on its way by SarahM (6/15/05 3:06 PM) | + / - | I know this printer is a total dud, but I did want to let you all know that by following your advice I was able to secure a new machine. I am having it overnighted out to my office, at our fee, but that's just because we can't handle a day without a fax and have a huge conference coming up next week.
Here's what I did:
I did as Lorrimer's customer rep suggested: "We have created a case for this issue: 3207946665. Please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-HP-INVENT (1-800-474-6836). A telephone agent would be pleased to assist you. There will be no charge for the call and the unit will be replaced."
They made me walk through some inane tests like turning the printer on and off and cleaning the printer cartridges. I emphasized that this seemed to be my no means a rare problem. Finally my customer service rep agree to send me a new machine, free of charge.
Feel free to ask me if you need any help doing the same thing I did. I am so pleased with myself for getting this free printer out of HP, I am tempted to add it to my resume.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Debi (6/15/05 3:48 PM) | + / - | But will they replace, repair or send me a whole different All in One? I have a HP Office jet V40 will they do the same for this printer as they did for your hp 5110? Please give me advice if you have it?
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by SarahM (6/16/05 7:28 AM) | + / - | They sent us the newer model. It arrived this morning and has a flat bed scanner. Ours was over two years old, so the 5110 that is currently sold is a little different. I am not sure about the HP office jet V40.
|
 | To SarahM by Debi (6/16/05 6:33 PM) | + / - | You are so very lucky or you know someone at HP? I called the phone number & got some foreign speaking guy i couldn't hardly understand. He said to call a repair shop in my area. So i did, guess what they want $250.00 to repair my Office jet v40 All in One!!!! I thought my God i could buy a new right now for half & or less than that price at WALMART or Sam's Club or even Office Depot where i got it in the first place. I paid $350.00 for the darn thing with extended warranty but I've had it for at least 3 years Office Depot can't find my name in their system to use the warranty & i lost all my papers that came with my Office jet v40 when i was homeless. So i got screwed by HP!!! So Sarah who do you know there that i can talk to about my junk HP sitting here? What exactly did you say soooo sweetly to get a new printer? PLEASE LET ME KNOW????
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by moe (6/16/05 9:19 PM) | + / - | I suggest you read the entire thread carefully. The important thing is you don't give up. This thread does contain all the info you'll need to get a new printer. If you get somebody who doesn't speak English, ask to speak to someone who does. Don't let them intimidate you. Speaking sweetly doesn't cut it. You have to tell them they built a defective product and you want a new one.

 | Re: hp 5110 by artifex75 (7/5/05 6:27 PM) | + / - | Hey, good news. I think that HP is finally wearing down. I called the 800 number that was posted further up on the thread and got an incredibly happy customer service rep after a short wait. He started typing the moment I said 'carriage jam' and asked me the serial number, my address and such. He even said that the serial number is just a formality as long as it starts with CN2, for the plant it was made in 2002. And since they're out of 5110's, they're sending me a 5510 at no charge. So, with no e-mails and just a 10 minute phone call with a happy little tech, I've got a much nicer(and functional) printer on the way. I'd like to think that I lucked out with the incredibly nice tech I talked to, but his attitude lends me to believe that the magic words 'carriage jam' mean instant replacement. Now, what problems are there with the 5510?
|
 | Your lucky too by Debi (7/6/05 5:09 AM) | + / - | Sadly i can't seem to get them to replace my Offficejet v40. The way you guys can get them to replace the 5110's even thou they are made at same time & many of the same defects. I also get a bad attitude foreign guy speaking very bad English every time. Wish i had you guys luck :0(.

Taking the back off and turning the rollers spat out a bit of paper, but still the error messagewas there when I plugged it in again. The particl reset and full reset didn't work either. Any ideas what's next?

 | Re: hp 5110 by SarahM (8/15/05 6:58 AM) | + / - | Just fyi, guys, they never told me this but you need to ship back the old one when they send you a new one or they will charge you the cost of the new one. I had a major battle with customer service to get the amount credited, but in the end I did.
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Stephen (edited 8/15/05 7:09 AM) | + / - | Every time I've dealt with HP on anything like this they want the old one sent back, and they have always told me this. If you arranged your replacement with an on-line chat, then you should double check it and see if you were told.
They also include paperwork with the replacement that instructs you to send the old machine back, and tells you the procedure to do so, and they include a pre-paid return shipping label.
If you didn't have to send the old one back, then you could make up serial numbers and get free machines all day long.
Here's a quote from an on-line chat I had with HP:
"You will receive a call from our staff for the Credit Card number. It is for security reasons. You will not be charged. You will receive a printer from HP and you have to return the defective printer within 30 days. If you do not return the defective printer to HP within 30 days then you will be charged."

|
 | Re: V40 all in one by Debi (8/15/05 8:20 AM) | + / - | They will allow a return & credited for this ONLY___%%$$#@#@ Printer ONLY JUST ONLY!! if you have a credit card. If you don't your screwed believe me i tried for 4 weeks then gave up in frustration. I swear i hate HP But they have they only printers i can afford. The rip offs.
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by SarahM (8/15/05 8:38 AM) | + / - | You don't have a credit card so there was no way for them to credit you? That seems pretty ridiculous to me. | Re: hp 5110 by Paul Williams (8/16/05 10:39 AM) | + / - | HP Officejet 4215 TWO DOAs in a row!! The second one not so surprising because, as I found out, they replace DOAs with reconditioned used machines. Half a week crawling round on the floor unplugging cables and plugging them in again while on hold to helpdesks in Bangalore to HP, who said it was a Dell problem, so on phone to them for a couple of hours too, turns out not Dell but HP, eventually they tell me they're terribly sorry for the inconvenience and will express deliver a third one next day -but OH NO THEY DIDN'T because it was out of stock. Tried to get some compensation for all the man-hours I'd wasted dealing with this rubbish, eventually they sent me one black toner cartridge. They clearly think their customers' time is as worthles as the junk they sell us. Unbelievably appalling customer service.
|
 | AMEN Brother by Debi (8/16/05 5:34 PM) | + / - | HP is the worst printer manufacture business in the world. So it's no wonder their losing more customers everyday.
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by moe (8/16/05 6:04 PM) | + / - | Think so huh? Do a search on Brother 31 error. I think there are several thousand posts on that one. Epson clogs, thousands of those as well. Truth be told, all the MFCs are crap, crap and more crap. That's what all the printer mfgs. perceive the customers want; cheap crap printers so they can make huge profits selling the half filled ink cartridges. So if you think HP is the worst mfg., by all means jump out of the frying pan into the fire and buy another mfgs. crappy MFC. Then 13 months later you can call them the worst printer mfg. All of them seem to just last past the guarantee period before they revert to their true function of doorstop.
|
 | Yeah i know by Debi (8/16/05 6:16 PM) | + / - | You would think with enough out cry these mfgs would improve their printers. Better yet that customer consumer reports their sorry butts in for broken promises to their customers & start a consumer awareness group to keep them from suckering us so much. Right?
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by moe (8/16/05 6:23 PM) | + / - | That's never going to happen. The mfgs. are just making the printers cheaper and cheaper. HP just spent over $1 billion dollars designing a whole new range of inkjet printers, that are cheaper, faster and a lot harder to refill with clone ink. Oh yeah, built in heads so the cartridges are even cheaper to produce. Welded together so they can't be opened for repair. Why bother since they're disposable? Sole purpose is to maximize profits from the ink sales. Since it will take a year or more for the aftermarket ink industry to analyze and come up with a new ink formula that will work, not to mention ways of bypassing the chip technology that is now all prevalent, HP will have all the sales to themselves.
|
 | Wish we had someone by Debi (8/16/05 6:43 PM) | + / - | out there thinking of us unfortunates who need & use printer's everyday like making & selling printers for more than just a quick profit. I heard about what HP & the competitors are doing. Soon only main business will be able to afford a top quality printers not the average person. Sad isn't it? Money does make the rich richer & the poor suffer. Worse with INTERNET becoming more open to business like banking & so forth we need printer's for our documents they will not make available at the business office across the street but make you print it out. Puts presser on the average stiff to buy a printer just to keep inform of all important papers you need in your daily life. I pay more for a printer & all it needs to run than i do for a whole months worth of groceries. For God Sake it's killing me alone in ink cartridges & refills. Yet as i said we have to have the darn things just to keep up with the world around us.

 | Re: hp 5110 by metuzuner (8/30/05 3:02 PM) | + / - | Hi,
After reading this thread and having to call HP support for 5-6 times I finally got my 5110i replaced with a 5500series printer. I had the same carriage jam problem and the printer stayed idle for lik 4-5 months cause the first person I contacted from HP said I have to pay $80 to get a replacement. Well I'm glad I've found out about this thread and there are people who share their experiences. I hope all of you guys who have the problem will soon be relieved. Do not give up, keep calling. They will try to make you tired of holding and stuff. Keep telling them about this thread, it finally works out.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Debi (8/30/05 9:51 PM) | + / - | Well it worked for you Big Congratulations!! Honestly for anyone who succeeds with HP. AS for me I want to personally Thank Sarah for trying to help me but in the end I got screwed. This how it went when i finally reach HP : Talk to funny to hard to understand foreigner speaking guy (& NO this is not an offense to foreigner speaking people i happen to have some great friends who speak their native Tongue & can still be understood very well in English) but this guy needs to practice English more. Anyway Bruce C won't or couldn't speak to me can't understand what the foreigner guy was saying to well in regards to Bruce. Anyway i ended up talking to a Kevin Balt (or Bolt?) He heard me express my problem with my All in One V40 and then said it was indeed a malfunction in the machine hardware which HP heads are aware of however because i called before for help they notice my warranty had expire if i renew it for $120.00 to $80.00 then they can MAYBE repair it, however because the unit is now consider worthless to HP it would be hard to fix as they NO longer make or caring V40 line printers. Now here's the funny part if you can laugh at it. Kevin said he can replace my V40 with a All in One 2510 for a exchange of my V40 All in One, however it is refurbished printer & i need to also send in $100.00 for the replacement printer. HUH Can you say SUCKER CUSTOMER or what? I clearly stated i have NO credit cards nor debit cards to use nor would it make since to buy a Redone All in One printer when WALMART has a 3 in ones on sell for $74.00 or a little more right now thru September. So if you have a All In One V40 & it's messing up DON'T call HP just trash the darn thing & go to WALMART or where ever store & buy a new one. There is no other choice for it folks. My Thought of the week after this is I honestly Hate HP personel & products. PERIOD!

 | Re: hp 5110 by Edguitar (11/15/05 11:02 AM) | + / - | I work exclusively with HP printers, and although their Laserjet series were and have always been excellent, the Deskjet and Office series are not. I believe that because of the lower cost of these units it is easier to just go and buy a new printer than it is to spend the cash fixing one of these.
I have a major customer with a number of the Office Jets failing with the same "Carriage Jam" problem and all HP recommends is to have them pay the difference (out of warranty only) and upgrade to a newer series. That did not rub well with my customer at all so I wouldn't be surprised if they switch their printer hardware to another vendor platform in the coming years.
On the other hand they run most of their production with the larger Laserjet series like the 5si's, 8000's, and 4000 series and they are very pleased with those. So it's a give and take.

 | Re: hp 5110 by grrr (12/7/05 11:59 AM) | + / - | I work for a company and we bought about 6 of these 5110's about 2 and half years ago. However, we've been pretty lucky with getting HP to switch them out, I had to call them about 5 times but they gave in and switched the broke ones for refurbed 5510's. I just hope I can get this 6th one swapped now.

 | Re: Re: hp 5110 by Anonymous (12/31/05 9:44 PM) | + / - | Is this true? HP only allows their own new cartridges to be used? I had the ink refilled in mine, and now it says I am still low on ink, and cant get it to work. Machine is only 1 year old...5510, and has not been used that much.
|
 | Re: hp 5110 by Anonymous (1/1/06 7:08 AM) | + / - | I had a problem where a refilled cartridge would not work. I needed to buy a new one and then it was fine. Makes you think that HP has done something to not allow us to refill these cartrides.

 | Re: Re: hp 5110 by Anonymous (1/1/06 7:32 AM) | + / - | That is where HP makes their money, certainly not on selling the printers themselves. I bought an HP Printer at a drugstore that cost me $29.95, It takes $35.00 ink cartridges!

 | Re: hp 5110 by irek725 (1/12/06 12:17 AM) | + / - | Whew! It took me a lot of mess to see for myself the very popular service station and the broken gear tooth. Actually, I just wanna see it and believes the rest of you guys that it's up for junk now.
So anyone interested with a junk?!

 | Re: hp 5110 by swanzi (2/27/06 7:55 PM) | + / - | Before you toss the thing (HP Officejet 5110), and after you've tried the HP website and the online help, I suggest you just pick the thing up and shake it. I'd just got an Epson delivered today, but, before unplugging the HP and carrying it out to maybe try opening it up and looking inside some day, I picked it up and firmly shook it--and now it works! Might be worth your trouble if anyone still has one sitting around out there.
Earlier I had the carriage jams. Lately it had been refusing to print, but no message showed. The icon would briefly come up in the task bar but then disappear. After my online chat ended with "I regret to inform you that ...the unit needs to be serviced to fix it", I kept doing the unplugging, plugging routine, and moving around the cartridges until I got a message: "Press enter to align the cartridges." To align cartridges, I needed to print the alignment page, but it wouldn't do that. Cleaning cartridge contacts with water didn't help.
I kept trying for about three weeks, thinking something might kick in. The shaking was the thing; it has aligned, has copied, and is printing.

 | Re: hp 5110 by cyndi (3/20/06 9:03 PM) | + / - | Have same error message "carriage jam". Called office support got a foreign guy and couldn't understand him. He wanted to charge me for giving me information but said he wouldn't be able to fix it over the phone. What was charge for....anyways....I found this thread and went through the online chat. Was very persistent and didn't give up and finally they said they would send my case to the escalation department and took all my information. They informed me they were only extending warranty until 12/05. We'll see if they ever respond. Will keep everyone posted. Seems like this is an ongoing problem with teh 5110 all-in-one.

 | Re: hp 5110 by Anonymous (5/30/06 3:08 PM) | + / - | HI, My name is David Nourani and I am 20 years old. I am a current student at UCSD and I have done part time work at a local print shop for over four years. I have found several faulty printer series and I believe that HP is purposely screwing over the average everyday American by not supplying the one tiny part that breaks inside of this printer, while they will supply just about any other part that money can buy. The part that has caused your printer to fail is a small gear inside the service station that breaks time and time again. The printer shop that I work at has received over 300 of these printers with exactly the same problem and all I can say is "Hp will not sell that part". Searching the internet will reveal case after case and EBAY is full of printers with the exact problem. ...HP needs to be hit where it hurts so that they get the picture, the picture that an established company such as themselves should not be allowed to prosper through fraud. I have contacted a major law firm about a class action lawsuit against HP and they are very interested in the case. As of now, I need clients who have purchased these faulty printers to come forward and contact the law firm so that they can begin keeping records of such cases. PLEASE COME FORWARD SO THAT WE CAN NAIL HP TOGETHER!! WHAT HP IS DOING IS WRONG!! You deserve to have peace of mind when purchasing products from an “All American Company”! Maybe next time we should all just purchase printers from Singapore, but then again, that’s probably where your HP came from…. :)
If you have any interest in helping me in my quest please write back so that I can give you the appropriate phone numbers. I assure you that you will not be disappointed and that this effort will not go unrewarded.
Thanks Again, David Nourani Dnourani7@hotmail.com

 | Re: hp 5110 by moe (5/30/06 3:31 PM) | + / - | David,
I suggest you just go through this thread and all the others and click the names of people who had the problem. Email them with the details. You can't email anyone named anonymous. After you get done with them, then there are all the 3820 threads that have the same problem. There was a Chinese mfg. who posted yesterday offering replacement gears. I looked at their website, but it is a really bad example of how a website should be done. I couldn't find the gear on it.

 | Re: hp 5110 by epilady (9/18/06 12:42 AM) | + / - | My husband and I contacted HP through their chat support tonight. We also have the same problem with our HP 5110. After walking us through a billion different "solutions" the rep too offered us an upgrade, as we were past our warranty. Cheapest one? $169.
When I mentioned this site, that this was a known problem with this printer, and that they had provided other customers with a replacement for their 5110, and I would appreciate being treated the same as other HP customers, she said (several times) it went against their policy. "HP does not provide replacement machines for products no longer under warranty. Understand that if your warranty had not expired, I would provide you with a replacement." When I insisted she look into this, she came back and said the replacement policy ended 12/2005, and she recommended that we upgrade, and then she abruptly ENDED the chat session. I didn't even have a chance to grab the session number for reference.

 | Re: hp 5110 by drg (10/3/06 10:51 AM) | + / - | Just went to HP for help with my 5110 and got the same runaround and suggestions to upgrade at a price of $159.99 for a 6210 as an "upgrade option". No thanks HP unless it's free. Are you willing to stand behind your products ? If not, I and my friends and contacts don't need you )
Any other suggestions?

Neither printer nor scanner work from Hp Director. Scan Source not listed. Printer fails to print after reloading software. Test page fails to print after adding new printer. | Re: hp 5110xi carriage jam by Anonymous (11/5/06 8:00 AM) | + / - | I had read about a hundred blogs about the hp 5110 carriage jam message, the broken gear, letters to hp's CEO, and just plain frustration with what little help owner's of the "all-in-one" received. So, I figured I wouldn't waste my time trying to fix mine.
I went over to Costco (where I'd bought the 5110) and purchased a new "all-in-one". At the check out stand a supervisor standing behind the cashier overheard me asking about an extended warranty. She asked why I needed one when Costco's unconditional warranty covered their printers indefinitely. I explained that Costco's warranty is for one year and I had purchased the 5110 in June 2003 (it was now Oct., 2006). She said they are not supposed to call their warranty indefinite (to protect against abuses) but if I would just bring the 5110 in Costco would refund me without any problem.
The next day I took the "all-in-one" into Costco for a refund. I was ready to defend why I would even attempt to return a 3 year old printer, and tell the cashier what the supervisor had said, but before I could even get started she had refunded the full purchase price in cash. I don't know if it made a difference but I had the original receipt (I kept for my business write off).
I cannot say enough good things about Costco. They evened the score between HP and me (at their expense).

 | Re: hp 5110 by Stumpy (11/17/06 8:56 PM) | + / - | I have never been here before but I finally dragged the old HP5110 down from storage after building another computer and decided to try and isolate the problem causing the carraige to jam to the right at the 14 month point. Of couse HP told me they could fix it for $$$. I figured I could fix it myself when I had the time so I kept it. This is day two of the project and I find out the "PROBLEM" has already been discovered. I just sent an E-Mail to an address off this web site...Hope to hear something from HP about this. The unit was registered and they have a complaint call on file when it broke so we will see. If nothing happens I will start on cutting a new gear and we will see how it works out. Will let you know how it goes. If I can find a way to produce a replacement gear I will let you know.

 | Re: Re: hp 5110 by Anonymous (11/17/06 9:08 PM) | + / - | I have an HP 5110 that died as described at the 14 month point. I contacted HP and got blown off as everyone else did. Lucky for me I can usually repair just about anything and planned on fixing this "someday". Well it's someday and I may very well have to start producing replacement gears if I can mill a quality replacment. I am not known for giving up, but I have been very successful at working through the BS and getting what I paid for. let me know where your going with this legal approach. Sounds like a continuing case of dishonest bussiness practices to me.
