Paper is detected after it is picked up by the feed rollers. If for some reason the paper does not feed, it is assumed there is no paper. If the feed rollers are turning but not picking up paper, remove the rear access door and clean the rollers with a damp cloth. If that solves the problem, use rubber rejuvenator as a long term fix. http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kkx3.html
If cleaning does not solve the problem, look into the paper tray at low angle and see if the paper is being lifted into the turning feed rollers when you print a page. If is is not, the paper lifter is most likely out of place. If this appears to be your problem, repost for the fix. Some disassembly will be required.

Help. I bought new black and colored ink. Not only is the color ink not printing, but now my paper is jamming as it goes in to the rubber rollers, and the print is large. Like really large. The green light it blinking. Help.

Verify that you have the correct cartridges, 45 and 78. Make sure the green tape is removed from the print nozzles. Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol.
If the rollers are turning and the paper is not lifting, either there is something that has jammed the mechanism (someone discovered a Lego recently), or the shiny metal piece, about 1" X 3", that lifts the paper is out of place.
To check the metal piece, pull the sliding paper tray forward and remove the rear access door. Looking from the rear of the printer, the metal piece should be laying flat, more or less, against the bottom between the left two feed rollers. It has tabs that fit into slots.
If the metal piece is not in place, you will have to remove the case and remove the feed rollers, not difficult, in order reinstall it. If it is in place, it is going to be necessary to inspect the mechanism to find out what’s jamming it.
Removing the case 1. Remove the two T10 Torx screws in the top of the case 2. Remove the rear access door and press the release tab in both upper corners of the opening. 3. Open the hinged cover and release the two "claw" latches using a slot screwdriver. One is in front of the Service Station and the other is on the opposite side in the same relative position. These are a bit tricky to release but patience will prevail.
Reinstalling the paper lifter 1. Release and remove the feed rollers by rotating the lever toward you that is integrated into both black feed roller shaft bearings. The levers rest in detents and must be pried outward slightly with a small slot style screwdriver before they can be rotated (Note: There may be a protective cover on the right that must be removed before the rollers are removed. Two clips hold it in). 2. Pull the sliding paper tray forward. 3. The dislodged paper lifter can now have its tabs reinserted into the slots in the bottom of the printer. The slots are between the left two feed rollers.
