 | HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Marcus Dare (7/23/04 7:18 AM) reply | + / - | I have a 1220c with dodgy error lights. The printer will not print and no amount of button pressing will do the job. The Power and Resume lights are lit constantly and cannot find anything on HP's site. Any suggestions?? Cheers.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Bert (7/23/04 9:44 AM) reply | + / - | I also can't find the light code. Since it is undefined, I suspect a defective main board (P/N C2693-69010). In this case the replacement part is cheaper than replacing the printer if you do it yourself. A new HP wide format printer costs $250 US. By far the most common problem with the 1220 is a failed power supply. The fix costs pennies if you can solder. Assuming you want to repair the immediate problem, I would also replace the weak part in the power supply. If you want to know about removing the case and fixing the power supply, repost. Before making any final assumptions, check for a 'foreign' object in the mechanism. That big paper catch tray can easily funnel something into the mechanism. I found a large paper clip inside a 1220 recently.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Stephen (7/25/04 5:50 PM) reply | + / - | Make sure the rear access panel is locked in place. If it is locked in place, then the service manual says the sensor that detects the installation of the access panel is faulty. Sensor is on the main board.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by hpwizard (10/26/05 3:51 AM) reply | + / - | Hi Chaps! I have a 1220 which has the ink light flashing constantly! I have replaced 3 times now with a new black but it will not go off. When you open the lid the carriage goes to the "dead black ink cart" arrow. I have cleaned the contacts & tried a new colour as well. In the manual it states the obvious then suggests logic board! Anybody else had this problem? TIA Dazz UK

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Willdav (8/7/07 5:50 PM) reply | + / - | I am having the ink flashing light error as well, but it always goes to the smiley face icon. I then took out the color to do a test, and it when to the frowny face color icon. So I figured that it reads my cartriges well, but why does the light keep blinking and it won't let me print?

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by jojodancer (9/8/07 8:24 PM) reply | + / - | I have a 1220c deskjet that ran out of black ink. I replaced the cartridge and now the printer won't do anything. When I push the power button the green light comes on momentarily then goes out. When I try to print a documet the power light comes on but shortly afterwards the error printing light comes on and the computer says the document failed to print. The printer makes no sounds and fails to or anything. Before I changed the cartridge it wouldn't print but it would move and act as if it wanted to print just no ink.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Bert (9/8/07 9:24 PM) reply | + / - | A momentary flash of the power light when the power button is pressed is typically caused by the rear access door not being latched properly. Reference the top of page 21 in the Users Guide. If you don't have it go here. http://h20000.www2.hp.com
How it works The rear access door has four pins that extend when the knob is in the locked position. Looking from the rear, the upper left pin actuates a switch that is in hole that it engages.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by jojodancer (9/8/07 9:38 PM) reply | + / - | I may not have been clear enough. When I try to print a document, the power light comes on and stays on and then the error light also comes on after a minute. After the lights come on the printer does nothing, not even a sound and I can't turn the power off. The only way to turn it off is un-plug it.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Bert (9/8/07 11:16 PM) reply | + / - | Disconnect the printer from the computer and try printing an internal test page. To do so, turn on the printer, press and hold the power button, press the paper feed button, and then release both buttons.
If the test page prints, restart the computer, then reconnect the printer and try printing.
If the problem continues, reinstall the old cartridge and see what happens.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Bert (9/28/07 8:49 PM) reply | + / - | Printer repair people never throw anything away unless under duress (wife).
Deskjet 1220, Replacing R13 R13 is between the toroidal transformer and R11 and R12 (which are both standing on end). All of these parts are to the right of the small white power switch connector. R13 may be covered with some solidified brown 'goop'. Use a 1/4 watt instead of the small 1/8 watt or what ever it is. Go to an electronics store and tell them you need a 15K 1/4 watt resistor. A few pennies vs. $80 for a new power supply. The power supply is P/N C8173-67019. It is wise to measure the resistance of R13 before assuming it has failed.
There is more than one version of the power supply. If R13 is not where described, then this repair is not valid. Regardless of which power supply version you have, if an electrolytic capacitor has exploded, its time for a new power supply. I've replaced them and found it to be a waste of time (pop).
Testing the Power Supply
This is a way to determine if the Deskjet 1220C power supply is operative. WARNING, for people who have ELECTRONICS TROUBLESHOOTING EXPERIENCE ONLY. There is LETHAL VOLTAGE in the power supply.
The power switch connector pins must be shorted together constantly for the power supply to operate on the bench. Working from the top of the power output connector down here is what to expect.
Standalone +18 VDC, Com., Com., 0V DC, *PSE (+13.3V DC), Com., +32 VDC
What I have named “PSE” (Power Supply Enable) is the pin I assume tells the power supply that the main board is connected. The +13.3V DC it is pulled down to essentially 0V when connected to the system. The printer power switch makes momentary contact, therefore something has to tell the power supply to 'latch' on if the main board is connected, otherwise the power switch pins would not have to be constantly shorted as in bench testing.
Connected to the system +18 VDC, Com., Com., +5V DC, *PSE (0V DC), Com., +32 VDC

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by moe (9/29/07 9:12 AM) reply | + / - | Those wives always get in the way of hobbies. I was happily running my printer business out of the garage, and a workshop off of the garage, when she threw me out and told me to rent a place. All because she came home and I had a printer apart on the kitchen counter. Still can't get into the garage for all the printers parked in there. There's another guy on the forum (who shall go nameless) who claims to have over 100 printers in his basement. He who dies with the most printers wins!

What I'm I doing wrong I have been trying to print a 13x19 photo and the printer dosen't grab the paper, and then starts to print on nothing wasting my ink The printer itself works fine expect for that. Thank you in advance for any help

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Bert (edited 10/26/07 6:18 PM) reply | + / - | Remove the rear access door and clean the drive rollers with a cloth dampened with water. Make sure the access door is relatched correctly or the printer will not turn on.
Optionally, clean the front tray feed roller, it may prevent paper feed problems later. Heres how, look into the tray at low angle. You will see a D shaped roller on the right approximately two inches wide. To get at it you will have to improvise something, perhaps a long thin screwdriver, with a cleaning device attached to the end. My artist lady acquaintance has creatively (how else) attached a pad made of a paper towel to a screwdriver.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Colors by Samstutu (2/1/08 10:20 AM) reply | + / - | I love my printer. Lately she is on permanent PMS. The only color I can get is pink. I had the toolbox align the printheads, cleaned the printheads on the third level, changed color ink cartridges twice, I ONLY GET PINK. Is there anyone out there that can help?????????

 | Re: Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Maunal paper feed trouble by Anonymous (3/8/08 12:37 PM) reply | + / - | I found that when I cleaned the rubber rollers with auto belt dressing, the paper feeds better. The 13x19 paper can be fed from the front if you bend the leading edge slightly (up).

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by guy48065 (5/29/08 10:53 AM) reply | + / - | Bert, I'm hoping I can revive this old topic one more time. My 1220C PS is not as described. No torroidal transformer (regular square laminated one), can't find R13. R11 & 12 are SMDs. Much of the PCB screening is covered by white glue dribbled over the component pins. If my resistor is in another location or under a different designation, you may need to help me find it by telling me what components are connected to each end of it.
All voltages check out per your previous post. When I plug in & turn on my printer I don't even get a flicker from the LEDs. Have I got a logic problem instead? Can it be troubleshot?

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by Bert (6/4/08 10:55 AM) reply | + / - | I have encountered three versions of the power supply. The one described is the only version I'm familiar with.
If the +13.3V DC (see power supply bench test post) is pulled down to essentially 0V when connected to the main board, check the power on switch for connectivity while pressed.
Make sure that the rear door is latched properly. There is a lever actuated by the upper left latch pin that operates an optical switch.
If the power supply and switch test okay that leaves the main electronics as the probable culprit. There is no troubleshooting info available.

 | Re: HP 1220c Deskjet Error Lights by guy48065 (6/4/08 4:08 PM) reply | + / - | When first plugged in there's no voltage on any pin but when the power switch is pressed the power supply turns on & all voltages are as you describe. So the PS & switch works. No wink from the LEDS at all, no buzz from the motors, nothing. It's starting to sound like mine is truly dead (other than the PS).
