 | HP 5110 carriage jam by Brett (7/13/04 7:45 AM) reply | + / - | HP 5110 all in one. During initialization there is a grinding noise before the carriage slides all the way to the right and freezes. Message says there is a carriage jam, open door and press enter. There is no paper to jam it up. I've seen posts for the same error on the v40 that seemed to indicate the 5110 ended up being sent as a replacement. I've also seen posts that recommend cleaning but they never seem to work. Is cleaning the only option here? Anything else to try before dumping it (not under warranty)?

 | Re: HP 5110 carriage jam by Bert (7/13/04 12:19 PM) reply | + / - | Since the OJ 5110 uses the same mechanism as the notoriously unreliable Deskjet 3820, there is a good chance that the gear driving the service station is broken. There is a guy in the UK that claims he can repair the gear to better than new. He has a web site that shows how to diassemble the 3820. Removing the case is different but once you are inside the mechanism is the same. http://www.fixmybrokenprinter.co.uk/

 | Re: HP 5110 carriage jam by juliabn (3/15/05 2:48 PM) reply | + / - | I also have a hp5110 with a carriage jam after less than 15 months of use. Funny that it 'just went out of warranty.' I used the phone number listed in a previous posting to hp and was given a 'complimentary' tech call only to be told that it is a hardware problem. I opted to have a replacement sent out which I fully expect to go out in less than a year but I think that will give me enough time to locate an alternative all-in-one. Any recommendations?
The most irritating is that we had bought printers for each of our daughters for their new computers at Christmas, yes-hp because at that time I wasn't having any problems with mine. This can't be right, how the systems go out once the warranty clears-do they know something that isn't being passed on to the consumer?
This site is great and I only wish that I had known about it before I bought the 5110.

 | Re: HP 5110 carriage jam by Ditt (5/3/05 2:57 PM) reply | + / - | I may have figured out a way to fix this problem. 1. Remove and COMPLETELY clean purge unit. 2. Remove and inspect those two miserable gears that brake. 3. If just the small gear has that"tab or key" broken off, straighten out a large paperclip and place it in a vise. Next line up your gear with the paperclip where the "tab" should be. Take a bic lighter and heat up the paperclip. Push the gear on the paperclip when the plastic gear starts to melt onto the clip. Be careful because it happens fast and you don't want to melt the gear. 4. Clean out inside of gear so it slides on the shaft. 5. Repeat on big gear if broken or bent. 6. Cut off paperclip to right size.
Good Luck Ditt

 | Re: HP 5110 carriage jam by twang (edited 8/10/05 10:44 AM) reply | + / - | Just got done an online chat with HP they are sending a free replacement printer to me.
Here is a slightly modified version of the chat session.
Anything inside "()" is a note I added and was not part of the chat.
HP Tech Hello Twang.
HP Tech Welcome to HP Total Care. How may I assist you today?
Twang Hello HP Tech.
Twang My 5110 is broken
Twang It's getting a carriage jam
HP Tech I understand that you are experiencing a "Carriage Jam" error message, am I right?
Twang Yes, a carriage jam.
Twang What do you suggest I do?
HP Tech Let's try to isolate the issue.
Twang ok
HP Tech Please perform semi-full reset. It will do the following: .The user settings to the factory defaults .Language and country settings on some models .Fax logs .Fax headers .Fax speed dial information
HP Tech Unplug the power cord from the printer. - Press and hold # and 6 while plugging in the power cord.
Twang it's resetting
HP Tech Okay.
Twang Still have a carriage jam
HP Tech Alright.
Twang What next?
HP Tech Twang, let's perform the power cycle to the All-In-One.
HP Tech 1. Verify that the unit is switched on. Unplug the all-in-one from power and disconnect the connection port(USB cable). 2. Wait 30 seconds. 3. Plug in the power only. 4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times. 5. On the third time after plugging the unit into power, reconnect the connection port from the all-in-one to your computer.
Twang It's still getting a carriage jam, what now?
HP Tech May I know the serial number of the All-In-One?. It is located on the UPC sticker present either on the rear or bottom of the All-in-One. The serial number is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, starts with either "MY" or "CN" or "SG".
Twang CN---------- (note: only the CN is important, that tells them it's from the bad series)
HP Tech Thank you for the information.
HP Tech Twang, I will provide you a link which has enough information to show how to resolve the issue.
HP Tech http://h10025.www1.hp.com
HP Tech Copy the URL starting from "http" till "c00310192" and paste in the address box of the browser, then press Enter Key.

Twang All done.
Twang Still have a carriage jam.
HP Tech I appreciate your efforts to troubleshoot the issue.
Twang And I appreciate yours.
Twang What now?
HP Tech Twang, as enough troubleshooting steps have been performed, the issue seems to be hardware.
Twang OK
HP Tech As you are a loyal customer to HP, we will be glad to replace the printer.
Twang Okay
HP Tech Note :As the printer is collateral, after receiving the replacement prin ter, you should return the defective unit to HP with in 30 days of receipt. | Re: HP 5110 carriage jam by Stephen (9/25/05 2:06 PM) reply | + / - | I just got done a long chat with HP.
After they diagnosed my 5110 they asked me if I needed anything else, then I told them about my broken 5110v.
Seems my backup machine had developed the same problem as my main machine.
So they are sending me two free replacement printers.
Those people at HP sure are nice.

 | Re: HP 5110 carriage jam by Smuggs (10/31/05 11:37 AM) reply | + / - | Do not call on the phone. They will want to charge you for a replacement printer. Do the ONLINE tech support. It will take about 20 mins and then they will tell you that you will get a free printer. I just did it and I got a free printer coming to me now.

 | Re: Re: HP 5110 carriage jam by Anonymous (12/1/05 8:51 PM) reply | + / - | yep- this is policy- you get a replacement- seems this is a design flaw...but HP chatters is sure nice...
|
 | Re: HP 5110 carriage jam by kwoods (3/4/06 10:45 PM) reply | + / - | I'm currently chatting with HP online support, who has informed me that they have stopped replacing the 5110's. Not sure why, but they are only offering a discount on refurbished models to replace the 5110's. Not exactly compensation for a printer that breaks for no reason, in my mind.
HP will not be getting my money again.
