Phaser 8200

  Post a new message thread

Phaser 8200 by Jim Beattie (7/11/04 9:22 AM) + / -
My printer is less than a year old...it has done less than 300 prints. The front panel tells me the maintenance kit is due to expire in 20 days.

Anyone know how to reset the machine and prevent this error.

I object being told by Xerox that printer will stop working unless I replace...a bit like a car dealer telling you your car wont start on Monday morning unless you have the oil changed.

Any suggestions welcome

Re: Phaser 8200 by dmzcompute (7/11/04 11:09 AM) + / -
I do not know if it can be reset. You could try a NVRAM reset and see if that helps. There may be a smart chip on the kit which tells it when it has surpassed maximum copies or has been in the printer past an allowable time frame. Keep in mind the maintenance kit I think is just the roller unit which sits in the maintenance tray and I guess it is possible for it to dry out or become unstable after a certain amount of time. Good Luck.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Jim Beattie (7/11/04 11:27 AM) + / -
Thanks

Unsure what an NVRAM reset is...there is a chip on the kit and I also know that it can be reprogrammed. Xerox sent me a .ps file but it was for LPT1 and the printer is attached to USB.

the roller in the kit is not dry...it's still quite greasy.

Re: Phaser 8200 by dmzcompute (7/11/04 12:35 PM) + / -
If you are using xp or 2000 or even NT there is a way to capture the usb port. First you have to know the name of your computer and the name of the printer. Go to a dos prompt and at the prompu type net use /?. This will give you the command structure you will need. From memory the command go someting like this: Net use lpt1:\\computername\printername /persistent:yes This will make any file sent to the lpt1 port to print to that prnter. You can test it first by sending a dos print job to lpt1 and it should print to the usb printer. Now I do not know if the file sent from the usb port will work or you have to physically have a prallel cable connected. May be worth a try. The NVRAM reset is on one of the sub menus.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Jim Beattie (7/11/04 1:30 PM) + / -
Found the NVRAM in the Support menu...made no difference.

Will try your next suggestion...I wonder if the Dip switches at the back of the printer have anything to do with it.

Maybe I have no choice but to buy this kit which costs around £90. Its just the principle. I own the printer, I should be able to do anything I want with it.

Re: Phaser 8200 by marty5261 (7/12/04 5:27 AM) + / -
First check either from the front panel or on a usage profile page what the remaining percentage is for the maintenance kit. If you only have printed 300 pages then it should be rather high. The counters have a date stamp on them, usually 12-15 months and when that dates comes up it will display the message you see on the front panel. As long as the percentage remains at a plus figure then the printer should continue to print even though it reads maint kit expired. It has expired due to the date stamp. You can either ignore the message and continue to print or replace the kit but I know of now way to reset the counter. These kits are supposed to have a shelf life due to the oil possibly drying out but as long as there is no problems such as the ink sticking to the drum and causing print defects I would continue to use it til either that happens or the maintenance kit percentage gets close to zero.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Jim Beattie (7/12/04 10:51 AM) + / -
Thanks. Xerox sent me a fix...a .ps file which I had to download to the printer via the parallel port. They said the fix would reset the date of the maintenance kit to correspond with the printer activation date. Printer purchased Sept, MK activated May.

Ran the download today, the MK date has been reset to todays date and percentage remaining 97%.

What affect would resetting the printer have? or how do you reset the counter.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Anonymous (7/12/04 11:28 AM) + / -
What you did with the ps file is to reset the date in the crum of the maintenance kit. This has no effect on the any other function of the printer such as network settings, printer default settings etc. The only way to reset the counter is via the ps file you have done already.

Re: Phaser 8200 / 860 Maintenance kits by John Calhoun (3/21/05 8:33 AM) + / -

Are maintenance kits interchangeable between the 8200/860/850/840 or will the chip function only in the corresponding machine?

Thanks,
jc

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (3/21/05 7:57 PM) + / -
As far as i know they are interchangeable. The only thing you will run into is the extended kits for the newer model go up to 45,000 print the older ones did not.

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by Chris Khayman (3/30/05 3:54 PM) + / -
Hi Jim, I just got off the phone with Xerox tech support and they would not give me this .ps file to reset the MK date. They "recommended" I purchase a new kit even though the percentage remaining is 98%.

Is it possible for you to send me this .ps file with any related instructions?

Thanks for your help!

Chris

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (3/31/05 8:16 PM) + / -
open up your internet browser and type in the ip address for the printer go into the settings and change the date of the printer back 1 year that will make the message go away.

Phaser 860 Maint Kit Expiring, need to reset date by fivestargourmet (edited 5/10/05 11:38 AM) +1 + / -
Hello, I am hoping someone can help me.. I have a Phaser 860 and I bought a maintenance kit off of ebay for it.

The problem is it DOES have 67% of it's life left, but it expires in 4 days! I do not think the person I bought it from understood this since I bought it a couple of months ago to use when I needed a replacement.

I have read on this board that it is possible to reset the date (on the printer or the maintence kit chip?) and I would like to know how to do that.

I am running windows xp, the printer is hooked up by usb, and I do not know how to find my printers ip. Also, it is not networked, just hooked directly to the computer. I found out the ip it is showing is 0.0.0.0 so it won't let me go into a browser and reset anything since that ip does not pull up.

If anyone could help I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Re: Phaser 8200 by phaser860user (5/17/05 1:26 PM) + / -
Someone else has already mentioned the same fix that I used to circumvent the expiration date on my maintenance kit. I was unable to print due to the expiration of my maintenance kit on the basis of age, not #of prints. I just set the printer date (via the web interface) back a bit and voila, i'm in business again. Seems like this would be the first thing people should try, but that's just me.

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by Kevin Johnson (5/20/05 5:29 PM) +1 + / -
I saw this thread from a year ago and wonder if I can get info on this .ps file that remedied the maintenance kit expiration. I have the same problem and would like to keep using the kit i have because i know it is nowhere near it's life's end.

Re: Phaser 8200 by fivestargourmet (5/20/05 5:34 PM) + / -
Good news.. it still works even if the maintenance kit "expires" as long as it still has print life left. I have 67% left and it prints like a champ!

Re: Phaser 8200 by ktmj (5/20/05 5:45 PM) + / -
OK. I just reset the date in the browser interface for the printer and it seems to work fine. I have 92% left in my maintenance kit. It seems that Xerox should give users the option to enable or disable this automated idiot light from their printer software - it clearly is not meaningful to some of us who don't do massive amounts of printing on the scale and timetable of their market population. Make the switch more obvious so we don't need to go scrounging for an obscure date setting in a not-well-publicized web interface. my 2 cents.

Re: Phaser 8200 by curtis hammond (5/21/05 12:18 AM) + / -
post that switch
info here so we all may share it..

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by ktmj (5/21/05 12:53 PM) + / -
OK - i'll post the switch when i get back to my office on monday morning and i can review it. i'll give the blow-by-blow for everyone to benefit from since xerox doesn't seem to want to place customer satisfaction above planned obsolescence.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (5/21/05 8:46 PM) + / -
what switch are you talking about? the reason Xerox does not tell you about setting the date back is because the oil in the maintance kit can dry up and cause print quality issues. And the web interface is writen about in the owners manuel. not very many people read it and that is why it is not well known.

Phaser 8200 - PhaserSMART interface by ktmj (5/23/05 12:01 PM) + / -
to adjust the date on a maintenance kit that still has usable life, access the PhaserSMART interface via a web browser by typing the printer IP address into the url line. Navigate to Properties, Date and Time, then enter an earlier date to fool the printer into thinking there is still time on the maintenance kit clock. i'm sure that this shouldn't be done if you've done a lot of printing and the maintenance kit is really used up, but for many of us who don't use the printer (e.g., my kit has 92% of its life left on it) to its capacity, the maintenance kit probably still hasn't dried up.

question to xerox - is there anything to look for to detect when the maintenance kit is truly reaching the end of its life? print quality or anything else?

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (5/23/05 6:21 PM) +1 + / -
if you start to have print quality issues such as parts of your image getting stuck to the drum the the oil in the maintance kit is dry and will need to be replaced.

Re: Phaser 8200 by doitmyself (5/25/05 6:58 AM) + / -
This is an unrelated issue to the maintenance kit and it is intended for advanced fixers. Mainly I would like the Xerox Tech to respond. I have 8200 and 2 850's and boy are they junk, Xerox Co. maintains a monopoly on these machines. The 8200 recently quit working, and I was in charge of trying to repair it, so I thought I would share what I learned in hopes that others would not be dragged into "got to have a service tech fix it", which we all know costs an arm and a leg, and half the time its a simple fix. I did get this printer working and I've found alot of other parts are interchangeable even their part numbers are the same between the 8200 and 850, however Xerox won't tell you that. The 8200's display screen went blank when it was powered up even tho' you could hear it running. Discovered that this was actually a defective powersupply, which I swapped out with one of the other "junk" 850's. Got the display back. Then came more troubles, I got an error code: 15,004.45:49925 , I used the xerox email tech support to get a description of this error code, accordingly it turned out that the Halogen lights that heat the drum to keep the ink from sticking to it burnt out. They wouldn't give me any other information except for that, so I had to locate these halogen bulbs myself, take em out, and lo and behold, these are just standard halogen bulbs that you could get at any hardware store. Got it fixed and decided to keep working on it, one of the other issues in our company was that the ink for the 8200 costed more, but the 850's color ink packs came with free black versus the 8200's ink did not. Guess what I did? modified the printer (I actually put in the ink tray from one of the junk 850's so we could continue getting the free black ink :) ), now the 8200 printer uses 850 ink and you can still use 8200 ink in the 850 tray by simply cutting out the top profiles with a scissors. Cool hey! NOW THIS IS FOR THE XEROX TECH: WHY WON'T XEROX PUBLISH THE COMPLETE DEFINITIONS OF ALL TROUBLE CODES? THIS ISN'T RIGHT, ADVANCED REPAIRERS SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION AND XEROX SHOULD HAVE SCHEMATICS ETC. I ASK THAT OTHERS COMPLAIN TO XEROX, BECAUSE THERE EVEN IS A TROUBLE CODE FOR DEFECTIVE MEMORY ETC. AND THESE ARE EASY FIXES, ANYONE COULD CHANGE THE MEMORY, ITS THE SAME AS NOTEBOOK MEMORY (MEANING SODIMM'S IN THE CASE OF THE 8200). Remember everyone, this is for advanced fixers, if you aint sure about fixing it, dont take it apart, but if you know about the safety procedures etc. for working on most electrical components and have a mechanical applitude GO FOR IT AND SAVE SOME $$$

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (5/26/05 10:34 PM) + / -
It is the same as a car or any other high tech piece of equipment. There is no car manufacture that tells you all of the error codes and they do not publish the repair manual for the public to read. Most people could change their oil for under $10.00 but take it anywhere to have it done and it costs at least $20.00 and if you take it to the dealer it will cost you a lot more. I cannot think of any companies that tell you how to repair your $1000.00 + piece of merchandise. I agree with you that some of the information should be made available to advanced users and that is why I answer questions here. Have you ever seen the book for this printer? The error code descriptions are very cryptic and do not just tell you to replace the bulbs. Here is something to think about, what if they did publish all of the error codes and the not so mechanical user tries to take their printer apart and they cannot fix it or put it back together? Does that make Xerox liable because they told him how to do it? When you took apart your printer to replace the bulbs did you notice the little flags that hang down in the front of the printer? If you broke one of them, which is common for the first timer you would have to replace the entry sensor. Do you see how this could be a bad thing? Most advanced users will just Google their error code and most of the time the solution will be found. Try it yourself, if you Google your 15,004.45 error it will bring up over 100 results and the first one is a company the sells a fix it yourself kit for the error. The answers can be found and most advanced users know how to find them. I am sorry you are not happy about Xerox maintaining a monopoly on their solid ink products and that you think they are junk. They are the only one who makes a printer using this technology. You cannot go and buy an Epson, HP, Lexmark or Cannon solid ink printer and that is why they try and keep it that way. I own an 8200 and I love it. I recommend this printer to anyone who does a high volume of printing because that is what this printer was designed for. They are not for the home user who prints 2 pages a day. I hope this answers some of your questions. If you have any more feel free to let me know and I will do my best to answer them.

I just received on my zerox 8200 the following error

Printer Error - Fault Code 11,009.46
I would like to know what this means so that i can judge how serious it is. the printer still seems to be functioning normally
I have googled the error code and come up with nothing

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (6/16/05 6:37 PM) + / -
that fault is not serious. you should have nothing to worry about

Re: Phaser 8200 by monkeysatemysoul (6/20/05 1:00 PM) + / -
i would just like to know if you can reset the number of pages printed on the maintenence kit...maybe im missed the post...also is there a place to get the maintenence kits for cheap like a non-xerox one, i know where i can get non-xerox ink. and one more thing is there a manual for servicing the 8200 or 860? I would like to know because they are both out of warranty and we dont want to pay up the wazzoo for servicing these machines.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (6/20/05 5:39 PM) +2 + / -
Why would you want to reset the number of pages on your maintance kit? The oil in the kit gets used up and that is why it needs to be replaced. i would not recomend anything but Xerox brand supplys. I have seen the damage they can cause. You can call the local ASP for Xerox and check service call prices with them. They usually charge alot less then if you where to call Xerox direct. The service manual should be in the manuals sections of this site soon if it is not already.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Stephen (6/20/05 6:56 PM) + / -
I agree with XT, resetting a page count so you can get more pages out of the maintenance kit is like setting back the odometer of your car so that the oil change that was due is not needed for another 5,000 miles.

Re: Phaser 8200 by jdwvw (6/20/05 7:19 PM) + / -
I agree with XT as well. Would you run your car with out any oil? Running past the experation of the maint kit would be like that. As for the 850's, I actually like them better than the 8200's. They are a little slower but have a better picture. I want to see what the new 8500's are going to be like though.

As for just changing the bulbs I dont recomend it because there are other problems with them as well. If it has the old style contacts replace the whole thing. If it has the new Style contacts then put bulbs in it and reuse it.

Using the 850 ink in the 8200's is a bad idea. They run at different temperatures. using the 850 ink can also cause paper jams due to ink sticking to the drum.

Re: Phaser 8200 by maxwellreid (7/8/05 12:14 AM) +1 + / -
I can only find the enhanced version of the Phaser 8200 maint kit in Australia. The standard kit (about half the price is not available)

any thoughts where i can buy it?

Re: Phaser 8200 by buttonz (7/12/05 11:59 AM) + / -
I installed a new maintenance kit and the date of the install says January 1st 1970. I logged into xerox 860DP via web interface but it only allows me to move the date back to January 1st 1999. I have 100% life left on maintenance kit. Does anyone have a solution?

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (7/12/05 6:21 PM) + / -
call Xerox 18008356100 they have a fix for that.

Re: Phaser 8200 by thecount45 (7/12/05 8:18 PM) +1 + / -
I have an 8200 that is showing an error code of 15.004.45.5517.

Any ideas of where to look?

I agree this printer is very expensive to operate.
I'm a small business, and I've had this printer about 18 months with about 5,000 pages. I've replaced the maintenance kit, and cleaned some dust out but no change in the error code.

I'm not happy with the printer nor my local authorized Xerox dealer.

If I can not fix this printer it is going into the trash. I refuse to put any more money into it.

Also anyone notice that the "New" 8400 uses a different ink than the 850 or the 8200, and yes it is more exposive.

Wonderful,
Bill

Re: Phaser 8200 by buttonz (7/13/05 10:41 AM) + / -
I had to cold boot after changing the date via web interface. I was only reseting wherein lied the problem. Problem solved. Thanks.

Re: Phaser 8200 by schraelen (edited 7/15/05 5:04 AM) + / -
We are using a Phaser 850

It gives the error that the maintenance kit needs to be replaced, but we only want to use it as a backup. we have bought a new phaser wich we are now using, but we still want our old one to work without paying for it.
I know it isn't a good idea to let him work without oil, but in emergencies it is better then nothing. Thats why we ask if it is possible to adapt the pagecount, so we can print again, although it isn't perfect quality

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (7/15/05 5:41 PM) + / -
if you have used up all of the pages in the kit there is not way to get around replacing it.

Re: Phaser 8200 - Any help please by garethh (7/25/05 9:23 AM) + / -
Hi Bill, just been testing a 8400 compared to a 8200 and yes have noticed the ink is different. When I try to do like for like testing though, the yellow in particuler always comes out darker on the 8400. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a solution?

Any help please

I'm having enormous difficulty getting my Phaser8200 to print over the network. I can get into the web interface just fine; in fact, I can use the web interface to directly print test et al pages that are stored in the printer itself. My computer, however, cannot print a test page or anything else, for that matter. Does anyone have any ideas as to why? I use WindowsXP and have the printer hooked up over the network. Thanks.

Re: Phaser 8200 by dmzcompute (8/3/05 12:43 PM) + / -
You need to check the setting on the driver to make sure the TCP/IP address has not changed. It should match the address you use to get into the web interface.

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by JTZapp (8/3/05 1:02 PM) + / -
I did, and unfortunately, it hasn't. Still no luck. It's just driving me batty.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Duke816 (8/29/05 1:30 PM) +1 + / -
Been using the 8200 since 2003 with good results. we use it as a network printer so its on all the time (standby when not used). About 6 monthds ago the printer stopped working with only a large Xerox logo being displayed. Had it fixed for around $500, needed a new power supply. Now it has stopped again with Xerox logo displayed, I suspect the power supply again. Unit is pulugged into a surge/battery back-up. Can these be repaired at the conponent level? Is it a weak design or some other cause? Junk it?

Duke

Re: Phaser 8200 by dmzcompute (8/29/05 1:54 PM) + / -
I do not know if it is the cause, but plugging a printer into a battery backup is a no no.

Re: Phaser 8200 by jdwvw (8/29/05 5:00 PM) + / -
There are other components that can cause that as well. The dm clutch, print head, main board and power control board can all cause it. I would fix it if it wasnt a main board or print head

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by Carwhisperer (8/30/05 3:14 PM) + / -
Have you ever tested this cross compatability issue?? The chip has the info as to the "capacity type", ie, standard or extended, which is read by the printer cpu. Are you sure it does not also check for the "model" number designation?

If it does not, then new 850 or 840 extended maintenance kits, which are cheaper then 860/8200 kits, would definately be the way to go.

Is there anyway you could check to verify this issue? Thank you.

Phaser 8200: Poor Colour output by woodman97 (9/7/05 4:40 AM) + / -
This message is addressed specifically to the Xerox Tech person contributing to this forum. You read my previous posting about muddy colurs (http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/11286#96) and suggested the printer driver is to blame. I've reinstalled the driver both from the CD and as a download from Xerox's site. Result: NO CHANGE.

I have NEVER gotten good colours from this printer, despite the perfect CMYK hues when printing the onboard sampler sheets. Do you know why a pure 100% cyan swatch in Photoshop prints out with dots of magenta and black in it? Thiks is the clue to why none of my photographs prints realistically nor well–if the pure CMYK colours can't be produced, then continuous tone images will be rubbish.

Please, please advise.

Thank you.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (9/7/05 6:41 PM) + / -
Did you download the PS driver? are you printing in photo mode 1200 DPI? what are your color corrections set to? Try setting them to none. You say your prints from photoshop are not pure, have you tried a different program such as word? you can create a shape in word and fill it with 100% magenta see if there is a difference between the photoshop image and the word image. It could be photoshop. Do you know anyone with a PC. maybe it is related to the MAC. Also just so you know if the internal prints are great and only prints from your computer are muddy that it is not the printer. the printer only prints what it is told to.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (9/9/05 6:15 AM) + / -
Well woodman what did you find. This is driving me crazy. Please let us know.

Re: Phaser 8200 by woodman97 (9/9/05 10:30 AM) + / -
Sorry Xerox Tech for the delay, I've been away from my computer for a couple of days.

Did try printing pure CMYK colour swatches from InDesign and, lo and behold, they printed out perfectly, just as the sampler onboard sheets (eg in a cyan swatch, NO magenta or other coloured dots!).

So it seems that it Photoshop is the culprit in this drama! How on earth I get to set the endless combination of profiles, printing options, etc in this program to print out authentic colours, I just have no idea. It's something I've been wrestling with for years and Adobe don't seem able to offer any effective advice.

Anyway, THANK you so much for your time and patience and, ultimately, wisdom!

Best wishes,

Peter (woodman97)

Re: Phaser 8200 by Perkins (9/9/05 3:31 PM) + / -
I've got an 8550, and I've discovered that I can take the used ink from the waste tray and turn it into crayons which I can then use for most of the various marking tasks around the office. However, there is rather more than I really need for this purpose. I was reading the manual for the thing the other day, and it says not to attempt to reuse the ink because it may damage the printer. I noticed that it doesn't say it *will* damage the printer, just it may... This almost makes me think that they only say that so they don't have to repair anything after some idiot accidentally mixes a couple paperclips in with the ink he's reusing. Either that or they havn't tested it... I'm wondering if there's been anyone out there crazy enough to try it. And if it worked or not.

Re: Phaser 8200–Solid ink re-cycling by woodman97 (9/10/05 1:05 AM) + / -
I agree with your idea Perkins, it has certainly crossed my mind to try and make a mould in which to melt the waste ink and re-use it. There is a not insignificant volume of ink wasted during normal use of the printer, and in particular when going through cleaning cycles and particularly when starting up from cold.

As this 'waste' ink would be composed of all four (C, M, Y, and black), I thought of making a mould shape for the black ink stick and that it would be good enough (as it appears very dark in colour but wouldn't be 100% pure black) for any print work other than high quality photo work. Just haven't got around to trying it yet...

Seeing as Xerox touts these inks as supposedly 'environmentally friendly', it's a shame they can't go one step further and give their company a bit more credibility by offering some information about re-using the waste ink.

These printers are, after all, neither efficient nor environmentally/ink-friendly when it comes to the cleaning cycle or switching the things on from cold–using, as they do, 25% of all four ink sticks just to start up! And I don't see how a simple wax-based ink cannot be melted and re-used, unless their first use in the printer causes the ink to undergo a one-way (irreversible) chemical change which alters their structure and renders them unsuitable for re-use. We need some responsible, grown-up information on this, Xerox!

And for Xerox to advise not to re-use the ink because doing so 'may' damage the printer, is disingenuous to say the least. They must have spend massive amounts of research time and money getting these inks working properly and commercially viable, it doesn't make sense that, at the same time, they didn't also investigate their re-use once melted. After all, it doesn't require billions of dollars to determine the viability of re-use of these inks, and sharing this information with printer users would enhance the company's claims for the environment.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Perkins (edited 9/10/05 3:02 AM) + / -
Well, like I said, it smacks of a liability statement so that idiots can't complain... The hardness and texture of the fresh and used inks seems to be about the same... It would be logical to compare the melting points and the viscosity when melted. If they are reasonably close to the same, then it should work...

Perhaps if there's someone out there who has one with like a paper feed problem that they're planning to junk anyway that could test this for us? It would be most irritating to have to clean out the inside of one of these... Methinks there will be lots of little parts...

Hi, I was hoping the XeroxTech could help with this... I have had this printer for several years, since 01 or 02 with hardly a hiccup until now.

Yesterday I went through the full power down process, let it sit for at least 2-3 hours, and then moved it from my bedroom to my home office and after powering it back up, I got this code:

15.004.45:158144

Any idea what this is or how to fix it?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by skikaz (9/17/05 8:11 PM) + / -
I'm not sure about the newer printers but the 840-850-860-8200 CAN NOT use the wasted ink if reformed. It will definately clog the printhead. I've had to relaced a few heads for some that had tried it.

Re: Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by Perkins (9/17/05 9:54 PM) + / -
Interesting... hmmm... I bet it picks up paper dust from running through the system and changes the viscosity... One of these days I'll have to take a couple samples over to the lab and test it. So much to do, so little time. I'll probably never get to it. Oh well.

Re: Phaser 8200 by woodman97 (9/18/05 1:58 AM) + / -
Thanks for that crucial info, skikaz, I now WON'T be trying to re-use the waste ink!

Re: Phaser 8200 by skikaz (9/18/05 3:54 AM) + / -
you can use the ink sticks from the 840-850-860-8200 in any of those printers but not the 8400 and newer printers, just shave to fit. the 8400 and up have a new formula where the ink bonds deeper into the media and is hard to scratch off. but it will lay down another layer in photo mode where it will scratch off.

Re: Phaser 8200 by fivestargourmet (9/18/05 8:52 AM) + / -
Hi, on using the incorrect ink.... I'm sorry but I have an 860 and my supplier once sent me yellow ink for the 8200 and it really messed up my printer pretty bad. The tech said that the inks have slightly different melting points by around 1 degree and that the 8200 ink wasn't melting properly.

I wouldn't use the incorrect ink. If you have incorrect ink maybe sell it on ebay and then buy the correct ink?

Re: Phaser 8200 by skikaz (9/18/05 10:24 PM) + / -
sorry about that, the 8200 ink sticks are different.

I've seen a few postings asking about the interchangeability of the maintenance kits for the 840 and 8200, but nothing on the results. Has anyone tried using the 840 extended maintenance kit in the 8200? If so, did it work?

Re: Phaser 8200 by urbite (9/26/05 4:10 PM) + / -
Hi,

I just purchased a Phaser 8200 at a closed bid auction. Took it back to the office and here's what happened.

1. Powered it up, only to receive a "RAM error".
2. Popped out the controller card and there was do SODIMM
3. My business neighbor has an 8200, so I borrowed his 128 MB SODIMM and reinstalled controller+SODIMM
4. Powered up printer - RAM error was gone and normal powerup occurred.
5. Test print had some black hash and a few missing columns
6. Ran cleaning cycle and wiped pretty dirty clear blade at front of printer.
7. Ran print test AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL - PERFECT! DUPLEX TEST WAS ALSO PERFECT.
8. Powered down and returned memory to friend. Bought 2 used (and supposedly PC133, CL2) SODIMMs, and tried both. Received 'RAM error' message at bootup for both different SODIMMs.
9. Ordered correct 128MB memory from Crucial. When I received it, it had exact same Micron part number on module sticker as borrowed memory.
10. Installed memory in printer - normal powerup without 'RAM error'.

NOW, THE WEIRD PROBLEM - VERY LITTLE INK ON TEST PRINT AFTER BOOTUP WITH CORRECT MEMORY.

Repeated cleaning test repeatedly with same result - VERY LITTLE INK ON ANY TEST OR DIAGNOSTIC PRINTS.

I then tried my controller+SODIMM in my friends printer, and his printer made perfect prints with my controller.

Next, I tried his controller+SODIMM in my printer, and I got output with very little ink on page - same as with my controller.

It's as though something drastic happened during the testing of the non-functioning memory and the installation of the correct memory. But, I get no error codes on the LCD panel. And, what I see of the prints (probably only about 2%-3% ink coverage) indicates that the proper image has been printed.

What could cause such a drastic change in the print output. I have partially disassembled the unit - removed both sides and the ink block feeder/heater. I didn't find any broken wires or loose connectors.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Urbite - whose printer is in the Twilight Zone

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (9/26/05 4:56 PM) + / -
go to troubleshooting and run the diagnostic test prints to see what jet are not firing. Does it have Xerox brand ink? using third party ink can cause the printhead to fail.

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by urbite (9/26/05 5:14 PM) + / -
I think I just found the problem. I removed the ink block casing/feed tray, which also has the ink block heaters. There is a black cam on the left side (referenced to the front of the printer) which makes or breaks a photo-interrupter. The pivot shaft through the middle of the cam is held captive at two points on the ink block casing.

It appears that the inside end of the pivot shaft is very loose where it is captured. Unfortunately, I can't see the inside shaft capture mechanics very well, even with a flashlight. But, I can move the shaft so that it can get captured into a position where it would never block the photo-interrupter path. I suspect that in this postion (when the light path is not interrupted), heating of ink blocks to feed the print mechanism is inhibited. This would make sense, because if the ink is not heated, then the print would only use residual ink that was in the mechanism. And, the print would have almost no ink, as I observed on my prints.

I freed up this cam and reassembled the ink block casing/feed tray, then restarted the printer (with the side skins still removed). I could smell the ink heating up, which I don't remember from when the printing failed. And, the diagnostic print WAS PERFECT!

Do you think that I have identified the problem? If so, how can I figure out what replacement parts are needed?

Urbite - whose printer MAY have warped out of the Twilight Zone

Re: Phaser 8200 sporadic ink coverage by urbite (9/26/05 6:01 PM) + / -
Oh well, it couldn't be that easy. After reinstalling the side covers and moving the printer from the workbench back to the printer stand, THE BAD PRINTS HAVE RETURNED.

As it turns out, the cam/switch I identified as the culprit appears to be the sensor for detecting whether the ink blocks are being pressed into the heaters by the spring-loaded cover. And it appears to be working fine, as I can manually trip it and see the status LED change between red/green.

So, there must be something that is loose or otherwise changes when the machine is moved - even slightly.

I ran the diagnostics, and didn't see any failure indicated on the LCD display.

Suggestions?

Any suggestions?

Also, is there a port or dir that i need to go to when trying to access the printer by ip?

Mr Socks,

I would bet it is your power supply. try flipping dip switch 1 up and power cycle the printer. if that gets you into diags then check the fault history and let me know what you find.

I suspect that you may have a problem with the drum heater. When one or both of the bulbs go out in the heater, you can expect long warm up times and eventually the printer should display an error 15,004.45. If this occurs, you can replace the bulbs. They are available as a kit on this site, complete with instructions. The 158144 is your page count.
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/specials/parts/lamps/S314 You will need size 10,15,20 torx bits for the repair. They are included in the deluxe kit http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/specials/parts/lamps/S316

Bot from ebay for 860 says it has expired past 15 months seller says it works for him no problems with his - Please help - Mine is drect connect not via network - I dont know how to find ip via net joesandon@gmail.com

Re: Phaser 8200 by wlulham (10/21/05 10:50 AM) + / -
A direct connect doesn't have an IP. IPs are for networked printers.

If it can be networked, I'd try doing it for a few minutes. If you can't, see if you can set the IP to something such as 192.168.0.5 and connect that way. (I've never tried doing this; so don't hit me if it doesn't work)

Some points I'd like to make regarding this thread:

As moe said, Error 15,004.45:yyyyy is often the bulbs burning out on the Drum heater/Paper preheater assembly. Sure, you can just replace the bulbs yourself for a few bucks. But, if a wiring or something else goes out (I think someone once mentioned a sensor on this assembly), you'll have to replace the whole unit. The yyyyy is your page count.

Somewhat related:

Unless the printer's solid ink says it's for that model, I don't recommend shaving it down (or whatever) and just sticking it in. The formulae for different inks has changed over time, as Xerox has re-designed their printers and made improvements. Melting points change slightly, chemical makeup may change as well, etc. Sure, it may be close to the same ink, but do you really want to spend $800 + Labor to fix the printer? (IE, new printhead)

Again, reusing ink is probably a very bad idea. You're liable to pick up impurities from the ink, which could ruin your printhead. It's not exactly a wax ink; it's resin. Which means it will change slightly during usage. Not to mention, your colors are going to be all blended together, and you're going to contaminate at least one of your heated ink tanks with said conglomerated color of ink. Mixing all of your colors together will not give you a true black color; in fact, you'll get a sort of vomit-green, sort of like mixing various Easter Egg colors together. Sometimes if you completely purge an ink tank, you can get the color quality back, but it's not a for sure thing.

Also, with using non-Xerox ink and various Xerox disclaimers. Xerox is a very nice and polite company (I think so) that allows you to mostly do what you wish to with your purchased printer. It's the customer's choice to use any mix of ink you so wish (Be it official or generic). But, due to the unusual and often troubled problems that result, your warranty doesn't cover such odd usages. The company has made an effort to make sure their ink formula works in their printers, and they don't give out that information on how to make it. I don't really advise trusting generic ink. The price difference probably isn't worth it. (especially if you could afford a Phaser to begin with)

All in all, having to pay for a printhead replacement really isn't worth it, IMO.

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by Anonymous (10/24/05 10:04 PM) + / -
Hi,
I replaced my Power Supply after receiving the Xerox error. Several times, it started up and did some double red light bleeps, but nothing ever came up on the LED screen. After restarting a couple more times, it now starts to initialize normally but again hangs up with the big Xerox when it gets to the print head test.

Do you think changing the dip switch will help diagnose? I am not sure where it is exactly. I have the printer diagrams. Nothing labeled Dip switch.

Or should I give up and get ready to replace the Print Head?

Thanks

Re: Phaser 8200 by jdwvw (10/25/05 6:22 AM) + / -
Are you sure you got the power supply in right. Some times it can be a little tricky to get the contacts lined up right. Try to reseat it (pushing the inside end up a little while pushing it in.)

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by tazzer22 (10/25/05 3:37 PM) + / -
Yes, I re-seated it again to double check. After reading the troubleshooting directions at length, this is what is happening:

BIST initializes fine
POST begins
hangs up after printhead test begins

Same thing in troubleshoot mode with 1st dim down
Same thing in reset mode with 4th dim down

Replaced power supply
Reseated new power supply and main board and ROM

VAC input at 100

If it is getting to the POST then it can't be the power supply can it? What do I do next?

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (10/25/05 6:51 PM) + / -
first off all the dip switches should be down. are you sure you pluged in the cables on the side. where did you get the power supply from? are you pluged directly into the wall?

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by tazzer22 (10/25/05 9:40 PM) + / -
Hi, The troubleshooting directions from Xerox say the dip switches should all be up for normal operating mode. I was following their instructions. But when I put them all down and powered up the front panel led pulsates with no messages at all and the PS and PE lights in back are constantly on. Then I have to flip dip#4 up to be able to power off.

Yes, both cables are plugged in on the side. The power supply is used, but was supposedly tested prior to shipping. I am plugged in drectly to the wall. No surge, no ups. Never had one. Printer worked perfectly until the power went out last time.

Re: Phaser 8200 by wlulham (10/26/05 6:28 AM) + / -
He's right.

All DIP switches are up for normal operating mode on the 840-8200 models.

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (10/26/05 4:51 PM) + / -
my mistake. the dip switches should be up. it was a late night.

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by tazzer22 (10/26/05 9:39 PM) + / -
So does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Phaser 8200 by wlulham (10/27/05 7:31 AM) + / -
Is it still using the old main board? (You said you reseated some stuff; my question is about the grammar you used) Have you done anything with the power supply control board yet?

Also, what was the original error code that made you change the PS?

The way Dip #4 (Reset) works, is you flip it down, and then back up. Leaving it down probably won't do much.

I don't think having all 4 of them down is going to really do anything. At least there's no cause listed in the manual.

My guess is that something isn't connected correctly somewhere, and it's causing the hardware tests to hang up as a result.

Does it actually freeze or does it just take a really long time? How long did you let it sit before deeming it wasn't going to work? (My reasoning being...sometimes if you let it try to do something for long enough, eventually you'll get an error code out of it.)

Re: Phaser 8200 by Xerox Tech (10/27/05 8:03 PM) + / -
if it is hanging at the XEROX logo then i would bet it is the power supply. i have changed about 100 of them for that problem
'

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by tazzer22 (10/27/05 8:23 PM) + / -
Hi Wlulham, Thanks for your help. Yes it is still using all the same original parts. (only 2 years old and very few copies) In fact, the printer worked perfectly until the last power outage and being unplugged for a month in a quiet room with no movement or unusual activity. No reason for anything to come unplugged.

Upon restart, it started hanging up after the print head POST. No error message at all. I left it run for 12+ hours a couple times with no change. The Xerox Tech recommended I try the Power Supply. I have not touched the power supply control board.

I hesitate to bring it to a repair technician because so many things can go wrong when the machine is moved. I live pretty far away from the city so having them come to me is not an affordable option.

Re: Phaser 8200 by tazzer22 (10/27/05 8:40 PM) + / -
Is there a way to test the power supply after it is out to see if the original or my replacement is working?

After I replaced the first power supply, the machine's front LED panel did a series of two short red light blinks, then nothing, then more red blinks then a lot more nothing. Not text, no errors. Then the next time I restarated (after 1/2 hr), it went back to the hang up at Xerox after the print head POST.

Third time I restarted (after 5 min - 2 hrs in between), 10 double red blinks and the screen just looks like it is trying to come on but can't. 4th time, BIST and POST then hangs up after print head test. 5th time and all since, hangs up at same place with the Xerox screen.

Hi...anyone have a solution for a Phaser 8200's sudden loss of power, and subsequent failure to power back up fully? It suddenly shut down while it was cleaning to eliminate light stripes, then (and each time I've tried it since) when I flip the power switch off and on again, it starts to power back up, warms up somewhere between 30-40%, then shuts down again. Print head cyan was streaking bad no matter what I did (including advanced cleaning snippet files), but this seems to be unrelated. Thanks for your time and help.

Re: Phaser 8200 by dmzcompute (10/29/05 11:47 PM) + / -
Does it power off or just start all over again with the warm up message. If the power actually turns off and you have to turn the power switch off and then back on, I would lean towards the power supply of the unit. We have had to replace quite a few. If it just starts to warm up again, you may have a issue with the drum heater bulbs and they have a kit for it on this site under the specials area. I am leaning towards the power supply.

Re: Phaser 8200 by 8200blues (10/30/05 5:11 AM) + / -
Thanks for the reply. It just shuts off - it doesn't recycle on its own unless I flip the switch off and on again. What's the best (and most economical) way to replace 8200 power supplies these days? Xerox tech, or take a chance on self-install? Thanks again.

Re: Phaser 8200 by dmzcompute (10/30/05 6:26 AM) + / -
You may want to email Xereox Tech who posts to this site all the time. He may have some additional insight and tests you can perform and from time to time he has the parts available. The power supply is not that hard to replace. The link to email him is below. In your email explain your issue again and what I thought it might be.

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by 8200blues (10/30/05 12:18 PM) + / -
Hello XT, thanks for your time. Dmzcompute suggested I email you regarding a problem I just experienced with my Phaser 8200. Just for background, I've had a ton of printhead issues over the last year...it got so bad I could never "eliminate stripes" or snippet enough to clear the cyan head. Just never went completely away. One day as I was cleaning and cleaning in another attempt to go streak free for even just a little while, the printer simply shut off. It had had enough, or had a problem that would have happened regardless. (I don't really believe the two problems were related.) Either way, if I flip the power switch off and on again, it will begin powering up as normal, but shut off again after reaching about 30-40% warmed up. Dmz believes it's the power supply, and that I could probably be successful changing that out myself. What are your thoughts on the power issue, and do you think there's any economical way for me to fix that pesky ink head? If so, any suggestions as to where I could obtain reliable parts that would be needed here? I appreciate very much any wisdom you can impart.

Re: Phaser 8200 by jdwvw (10/30/05 8:20 PM) + / -
If the printer powered off in the middle of running that snippet the printhead adjust may be set too high.
While it is warming up (about 25%) (just before it goes to the cleaning cycle) hold the up and press the ok button. The service tools menu should appear. Then hold the up and press the down. The hidden service menu should appear. Scroll down to head adjust. It should be set to 128. If it is set to 255 the printer will not make it through ELS and WILL shut its self off.

Are you running Genuine ink?

Re: Re: Phaser 8200 by 8200blues (edited 10/30/05 9:00 PM) + / -
Thanks for the insight! I checked, but it was indeed set at 128. I changed it to 100 just to try something different, but it turned itself off again at about 45% warmup. As for ink, no, I haven't used Xerox ink since the original package that came with the printer itself. I realize that's most likely why I have such streaking problems. But I could never afford to have the printhead evaluated to see if the ink was the culprit since if it wasn't....well, I'd have to pay equal or more for the head than the printer itself cost. Any add'l ideas to try if the cyan snippet fails to sufficiently clean the jet? I've cleaned it multiples and multiples of times, with only minor improvements to show for it. The quality is still not at all useable. Thanks again for your time.

Re: Phaser 8200 by wlulham (10/31/05 6:32 AM) + / -
Once jets start to go permanently bad in the printhead due to Non-Xerox ink, they're usually pretty well stuck that way.

Not sure on the sudden powering off issue. Have you tried checking the fault log to see if any faults are being reported at the last minute before it powers itself off?

Re: Phaser 8200 -water tray won't come out by fvbekkum (12/9/05 5:22 AM) + / -
I've problems removing the waste tray. It is blocked. When I open the right side and roate the belt a little it will come out after some trying.
Anybody knows the solution? I've already checked whether the green tray slides are installed properly -ant they both seem to be in the right place - also the lip in the back.

Re: Phaser 8200 by wlulham (12/9/05 6:17 AM) +1 + / -
That's normal, fvbekkum. The wiper/gasket that cleans the printhead parks all the way down along that belt's travel. This locks the waste tray in. In the service menu, there's an option to unlock the waste tray if you need to remove it for some reason. The tray should unlock itself when it needs to be removed for emptying.

If you're going to rotate that vertical belt that drives the orange gasket, make sure to rotate it evenly on both the left and right sides. There's actually two belts (one on each side) that moves the gasket up and down. If you turn one and not the other, the gasket can get off kilter. (IE, instead of sitting like - in respect to the printhead, it ends up sitting like / or \ in respect to the printhead)

I have a phaser 8200 that comes up with an error code 13003.42. the copy count is 57000. Could someone help troubleshot this problem, and suggestions on repairing

sounds like your printhead is bad. I would buy a new 8500 or 8550. The cost of replacing the printhead is over $1000.00, if done by a ASP.

Is there a possibility of running a diagnostics test on the print head only to try to revive it? Is it worth the effort to buy a printhead on ebay.

Not as far as I know. That error indicates the left jet stack is "running away" and except for checking the electrical connections to the printhead which never go bad, the printhead needs to be replaced. Xerox Tech is 100% correct. Best bet is to get a new printer (57000 is a high count for these printers) and sell the old one as a parts unit.

I'm considering pulling the printhead, is there any special instruction on the removal. The printer has been off over the weekend with the power cord pulled. Is there only one thermister or a way to test which jet is giving me the problem.
