Epson C80 won't recognize OEM Cartridges by AJ Ramos (6/29/04 6:01 AM) reply + / -
Have had this printer almost three years now and have had little trouble till now. Changed out a couple of color cartridges that were out, blue and magenta to be exact, that were compatibles. Hit the print button, printer does its thing, and then the red ink light comes on. HMMMM, maybe I didn't seat the cartridges correctly, so went through the routine again. Same Same, red light glowing like a mad dog. Go to the internet, do a search, and find a few answers (and this site). One was bad ink cartridge, another was clean the connectors..ok I have been using this compatible company for a while and never had no problems with their cartridges, so let's try cleaning the connectors. Clean connectors, but nothing happens. I am getting upset. Turn off printer, and walk away Went through this routine, till I finally decided, let's put oem cartridges in. And it worked for awhile and then the red ink light is aglowing again. This has been going on for a week now. Sometimes the light goes out and printer works fine, sometimes it goes on and printer refuses to work. Does anyone know what is going on here? These are brand new OEM cartridges. Have gone through two sets already and I am ready to trash this printer. OBTW - the Ink Monitor in WinXP when the red light is on sometimes shows the cartridge not being recognized (always the blue) and sometimes, and this is weird, shows only three cartridges, Black, Magenta and yellow, and the yellow bar is way out of its box. Don't know if the two problems are related.

I thank you ahead for your time and response.

AJ Ramos

Aj Ramos: Its quite common, for Non-Epson Ink Cartridges, to not always be recognized by the newer models of Epson Printers, because of the electrical chips mounted on the cartridges. Sometimes you will even get Error Messages up on your Monitors screen, telling you that you are actually using a Non-Epson Ink Cartridge, or that your printer cannot recognize the cartridge that you installed. JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: Epson Ink Jet Style Printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks. Epson Printers use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers. Epsons "Micro Piezo Ink Jet Technology" and the ultrafine 4-picoliter ink droplets used in most of the Epson Ink Jet Style Printers, just don't always work well with Non-Epson Inks. Most, if not all of the other manufactors, use thermal or bubble jetprint heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. There are people that say they use Generic or Third-Party ink cartridges in their Epson Printer and have never had a problem, but I've seen and read about too many problems caused by using Non-Epson ink and ink cartridges. Sometimes using the wrong ink can even cause possible damage to the Epson Print Head Assembly. Epsons use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers and correct Epson ink formulation is vital. Those printheads are one of the reasons that the Epson Printers make such quality color prints, that so many people rave about. No matter what anyone says, all blacks and colors are not the same. Printer manufacters do not make available their ink formulation and in most cases, the formulation is patented. Any difference in the ink formulation can clog the small printhead nozzles or damage other critical components. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair, so you can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. Epson has many different formulas just for its black ink, for all the different Epson Printers, let alone for their colored inks. Generally if you are using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges, or refilling your old cartridges, you are using the wrong ink for your printer and sooner or later you will have some type of problems, almost everyone does. You are taking your chances by using Third-Party or Generic ink cartridges, or even by refilling your old cartridges. I understand the differences in the costs of the Non-Epson Ink and Ink Cartridges, compared to the Epson Ink Cartridges and the choice is always yours to make. It really does not matter to me what type of ink cartridges you decide to use in your Epson Printer...AS TO WHY EVEN THOSE ACTUAL NEW EPSON INK CARTRIDGES ARE NOT BEING RECOGNIZED: It's possble that you may even have an actual Hardware/Parts problem, but no way to really know. If you were to do a search on this Printer Repair Site, under the Epson C80 series printer, you would see that you are not alone in having strange problems. It seems like most of the problems are usually more of a Hardware Failure [parts problem], but no way for me to really know. Most of the strange problems, seem to happen, just by simply replacing the ink cartridges, as normal. As you said you have already cleaned the Electrical Contacts [hopefully on the ink cartridge's elec chip and inside the print cartridge holder assembly] and it did not help, then the only thing that I can suggest, is that you actually clean the Sensor Strip/Encoder Strip and see if that helps. Check for an e-mail from me on cleaning that sensor strip...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Thank you for your prompt and informative reply. Being an aircarft maintenance guy in the Marine Corps, I know what you mean about "strange" problems popping up.

I await your email on cleaning the Sensor Strip/Encoder Strip.

Again Thank You for your time

AJ: You're welcome! You should have received that e-mail by now, but just to be sure, I'll resend the info again. I hope it actually helps...Again, Denny Conway
