Epson 1290s No Output At All!

Epson 1290s No Output At All! by Glenn (6/24/04 6:33 AM) reply + / -
Hello

I have a curious problem that has just developed on my Epson 1290s.

I was seeing some problems with the print output from one of my 1290s so I removed the print head to clean it with some cleaning print head cleaning fluid, this is a normal procedure for me, I prefer to remove the head and clean it away from the printer to stop getting muck inside the casing.

I cleaned the printer in a similar way to the fixyourownprinter cleaning kit, a syringe and some fluid, after leaving the syringe on for a while I was happy that the head was ready to go back in the machine.

Replaced the head and then the cartridges, ran a few cleaning cycles and then a nozzel check - horror! - nothing at all, no ink at all! Left the machine overnight, still no ink, more carts, still no ink.

The status monitor can see the carts and report ink levels, the head moved as if it is is printing, just no output.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks

Glenn

Glenn: There's no way for me to actually know what went wrong, but just to let you know: I work for an Epson Authorized Service Dealer and do all my companies printer repairs. I never remove a Printhead Assembly from an Epson Printer for cleaning, just for replacement. There is a high chance of damaging the printhead and or actually getting the Factory Settings thrown off. The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never disolve, or it actually damages the nozzles...Other than being sure that the printhead assy is correctly installed, its always possible that you simply have an actual Hardware/Parts failure [failing: printhead assy, felt cap assy, pump assy]. DURING A PRINTHEAD CLEANING CYCLE OR EVEN A NORMAL PRINTING CYCLE: The pump in the Cleaning Station Assembly, actually creates a vacuum [thru pumping action] which pulls the ink from the Print Head Nozzles, thru the felt Cap Assembly, thru the hoses and onto the Waste Ink Pads, where it is absorbed. REMEMBER: NO PUMPING ACTION = NO INK FLOW & NO VACUUM = NO INK FLOW. A LOSS OF PUMPING ACTION OR A LOSS OF VACUUM CAN HAPPEN WHEN: The pump quits; hoses get clogged; the hoses come off; the hoses get crimped/pinched; springs under the cap assy fall off; the cap assy comes unhooked from its mounting points; the cap assy gets so dirty [build-up of dust, dirt, lint, hair, etc.] that it fails to seal correctly. Generally speaking, the pump seldom fails but after a year or two of steady use, the capping assembly and head may need some attention. REMEMBER: If the felt cap assembly, with the rubber seal/ring around it, does not seal under the printhead assembly correctly, then the vacuum is lost and no ink is pulled thru the nozzles. Check for an e-mail from me, with some additional info in that area...Good Luck! Denny Conway

can the same be said for 1280s?
I'm having the same problem.

Michael: Actually the general info that I gave to GLENN [in the posting right above yours], not only applies to your "1280", but to most [if not all] Epson Ink Jet style printers...By the way, I sent you that additional info, that I sent to Glenn...Denny Conway

Thanks Denny,

I have now discovered that I had/have two problems.

I followed the instructions that you gave and the pump was not pumping the ink from the pad.

The actual problem appeared to be a blockage in the tub under the pad, with that cleared I can now see that the printer is able to complete a cleaning cycle, ink is draw onto the pad and then whisked away down the tube.

Still no print out though, not one drop of ink on the paper.

I am starting to suspect the small ribbon that connects the print head to the board.

The reason why, well, the printer behaves normally, it knows the carts are there, it moved the print head as if it where printing, just no output at all, but I know that ink is in the print head, I have seen it clean.

Will let you know how I get on...

There's a fuse to protect the print head from over current. Your cleaning procedure might have damage the print head in such a manner that it damaged the fuse when power was applied. The fuse is located on the main board usually near the print head cable.

If the fuse is damaged then the print head is also damaged.
