 | HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Brad (6/22/04 10:01 AM) reply | + / - | Recently my LCD screen on the printer has been deteriorating, almost to the point of going blank. It's a shared printer on a network (on my PC). I've tried utilizing the on-screen monitoring feature, but it doesn't seem to be able to read my printer and see the ink levels. Any ideas on: A - how to configure the on-screen monitor so it reads the printer, or B- where I can buy a replacement LCD screen. The printer is superb, 'just can't see the LCD data. Thanks!

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Bob Kiley (7/12/04 1:30 PM) reply | + / - | I have the same problem. I believe the front display panel needs to be replaced. I will be installing one at the end of the week when the part comes in. I'll let you know if works. You can get all HP parts through: Digital Systems Service 174 Davis St. Douglas, Ma 01516 508/476-9003 The "front panel assembly" will cost you about $55. They also do repairs on all brands of printers.

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Bob (7/15/04 12:30 PM) reply | + / - | I replaced the front panel assy. today and it fixed the problem. It took about 20 minutes. Once you figure out how to get the cover off it's just a couple of screws. You can get the part from DSS, (508-476-9003).

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Stephen (7/18/04 5:01 PM) reply | + / - | C8109-67031 FRONT PANEL SVC I sold one to a customer last week for $51.87 plus tax and shipping. Moe can probably get them for resale, if he can't and anyone needs a source you can email me, I do not stock them, so it would take a few days to get one from HP, then another few days shipping time to whoever wants one. I recommend asking Moe first.

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Stephen (7/18/04 5:19 PM) reply | + / - | Whoops...my apologies, brain check error, the part number and price above are for a business inkjet 2600. The part number for a cp1700 is: C8108-67007 Part Description PCA- KEYPANEL SVC HP Part List Price $47.00 (ea) Again, hopefully Moe can resell this, if not I'll be happy to help.

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Fishr (5/19/05 1:09 PM) reply | + / - | Hi,
I had the same problem with my cp1700. The display was very dim and intermittently the printer would not power on properly. I fixed it by doing the following....
1, Remove darker grey smile shaped bit of plastic round LCD by gentle persuasion and prising up of 3 clips along bottom edge.
2, Remove 2 screws at back, to remove lighter grey bottom half of smile shaped bit
3, This reveal the circuit board with the clear plastic housing, unscrew the clear plastic housing and remove. On the circuit board there are a number (3 if I remember) of bare wire link connector things, which lay flat on the top of the circuit board and go through a hole at each end, which is then soldered on the underside of the circuit board. My problem was that the biggest one of these links was very loose and after a bit of wobbling came disconnected completely at one end.
4, I replaced this link with a new bit of wire and all worked again ok.
Hope this helps someone,
Jake

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Pete Klammer (8/1/07 9:23 AM) reply | + / - | I took my panel apart much as Jake described, and probed and pressed and prodded to find anything loose or intermittent: my CP1700 LCD failed progressively over time, with more and more lost pixels, so I theorized either deteriorating connections or faltering voltage.
My conclusion:
The LCD failure is due entirely to the LCD flex connector (wide, short, ~100-conductor ribbon cable), specifically, the termination of the flex connector to the PCB.
It appears to me that the original manufactured attachment of this cable was not solder, but either conductive adhesive or possibly light heat. It might be possible to restore electrical signal integrity with modest heat and some pressure. My fingernail pokings did not suggest that pressure alone could restore LCD operation.
I tried reheating the terminations with a soldering iron (and 10X magnifying headset goggles), which DID improve things but also DID melt some of the connector away. The dark, conductive bands are NOT metal! It is VERY easy to heat right through the plastic and ruin the connections.
I stopped when I had recovered, and not destroyed, enough pixels to recognize my ink-color remaining-capacity "cups" icons.

 | Re: Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Anonymous (8/8/07 1:28 PM) reply | + / - | Thank for you for your information about the flex connector. It worked like a charm. However, instead of a soldering iron I used the blunt edge of a pair of scissors and pressed it across the terminations. It restored about 98% of the pixels in the display. I had actually purchased a replacement display panel, it had the same problem with missing pixels, so I thought I would try your fix with the old display and like I said It worked great. Thanks again.

It was working fine until I stored it away for a few months now that I took it out of the box the LCD does not work and the amber light on the paper jam blinks. I dont know how to take off these star looking screws to take the gray panel and the plastic cover off??? seems that the phillips screw driver does not work on these little screws. Any ideas? Thanks

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by mcprinter (9/14/07 1:51 AM) reply | + / - | The screws are called torx. You need a T10 or T15. Can't remember which
Assuming you are in the US (I am in the UK) Places including hardware/car shops probably sell them.
Go to the Sears website and search for torx. The printer also has T20, so it would be best to buy a set for future use.

 | Re: Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Dennis Kean (1/16/08 7:52 PM) reply | + / - | Pete, you understood the problem correctly, as I see it. Mine seems to have gone in that direction. I used a soldering iron, tiny tip, and most of it came back, but not all. Then as I was putting it back together, (the plastics) it seems to have died for some reason or other. Oh, well... Now I have to buy a new one. But I was able at least to figure out that my ink cartridges were full. So, I will save some $120. I think that it is rather nasty that we spend a fat buck to get a fancy printer and not be able to use it. Until I read these posts I gave up on the printer and I did not print more than 10 13x19 prints to date. I gave up on the printer 2.5 years ago, as soon as the warranty expired. HP wants more for the repairs than for getting a new printer. I think they quoted me some exorbitant price to replace it.
So, who is the guy to contact to get a new display? Or do I go to HP and pay $500 for it? ha ha...

 | Re: Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by DKean (1/17/08 5:07 PM) reply | + / - | From $45 two years ago to $150 now??? To hell with it. I reheated the connections on the 100 pin connector and after some success the display died. But I turned the printer off and on and the panel came back. But not every bit is functioning. Enough of them are functioning to let me figure out what is going on and that will have to do for now. When I get mad I will get in there with some tiny soldering and solder it back together line by line. I'm not spending another dime on HP printers. But thanx anyway.
And Epson is following in their footprints, though Epson did not give me that many headaches. In fact none of my Epsons or Oki-datas ever broke down. So why was I buying HPs, since every HP I ever bough developed one problem or another??? I must be dumb, now that I realize this! Live and learn, dude.
Thanx to both YP and Bert for your replies.

I want to cut down my costs on the ink as well as the next guy. What is the best source of refill ink or what do you guys think about the "Continuous Ink System?"
Is that ink as good in appearance and performance as the HP ink for the CP1700???

 | How to revive the CP1700 Printheads or any other by DKean (1/17/08 5:28 PM) reply | + / - | I have a contribution to this nice forum. Last night I read up your posts and decided to try to revive my HP CP1700 printer. It was out of use for nearly 3 years by now. Within a year I started to get lines and the display began to lose pixels until 6 months after buying it I could not read what it says on it. But you guys put the spirit of fight into me, so I'm giving back.
The print-heads are a "biatchio", if you know what I mean. It takes very little time before the start to lose pixels. Well, mine were COMPLETELY shut down, CLOGGED! That meant about $140+ to replace them. I said, NO! First I'll try to UNCLOG them. Here is how I did it.
Pull up the water plug on your bathroom sink and fill it with searing hot water only 1/2" to 3/4" high. Dunk the bad print-heads in it and let them stay there for 1-3 hours or even overnight. Refresh the HOT water from time to time. The heat is the trick, I tried everything else. You will lose a lot of ink from the print-heads if they open up for you but who cares. The cartridge will replace it. Remember mine are nearly 3 years old!
Then you need to soak a wad of toilet paper with hot water and start banging your print-heads on it until you notice that the bang releases a good impression of the two parallel ink port-holes. When you see that wipe the electrical connections of the heads and do not wipe the port-holes. The ink must start to flow before you start to think of drying that surface. In fact never wipe that surface. Replace them into the printer and start doing the head cleaning routines until you get perfection. You may have to repeat the process, but I got mine working after 2.5 years

 | Re: How to revive the CP1700 Printheads or any oth by DKean (1/17/08 5:38 PM) reply | + / - | And since I ran out of space on the former post, I just want to finish that post with "Take that to the bank HP" Ha...ha...ha...
Having said all that, let me report that my blue print-head is still not completely perfect, but the others are! Well, that will be just about $35 instead of $140...
Now, let's see, what can I do with $105 now? How about some non-HP InkJet paper and a good meal at Cal's in Manhattan on 23rd street and 7th ave! YEAH! Now that rocks!! CARRAMBA!

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by pisecek (4/28/08 1:46 AM) reply | + / - | 6 months ago we changed a defective display in customer's CP1700 for a new one. Now it was defective again-missing lines in the display matrix causing that it was not readable. HP didn't change the part in warranty, so we decided to repair it for customer by ourselves. After removing the grey cover, the clear plastic bubble and disassembling black display frame (4 screws), we heated the display leads (strip) on the side of PCB (not the display), with a hot air gun (set to a lower level) from ca. 5cm distance and immediately after that pressed the strip to a PCB with a rounded screwdriver handle. Place a piece of cardboard or another material as a "thermal shield" behind the PCB to protect the display. It works fine now, curious how long it will last.

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by charanis (5/30/08 5:35 AM) reply | + / - | Man - did all this. Don't have the fancy tools but tried heating it with a hairdryer. Bottom line, I can't get it to come back. Its been a good 7 years though. I found the part out there - best price with shipping is $100 and get this - you can buy a complete used printer on e-bay for <$150 including shipping. So that's the question - just get another printer for parts?
|
 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by charanis (5/30/08 6:42 AM) reply | + / - | wow - it worked. I persisted - blowing the hot air (with my wife's very expensive hairdryer) on it and going over each contact with a blunt flat head screwdriver. Its not perfect but I can see the ink levels and read the messages. I have a light directly above it that gets pretty hot (on a rack). I wonder if the heat from the lightbulb melted away the contacts.

 | Re: Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Anonymous (9/14/08 4:28 PM) reply | + / - | Do yourself a favor and stay with the manufacturers ink. The refils work for a while, but really gummed up my Cannon printer.

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by TDATS (9/29/08 5:30 AM) reply | + / - | I had great luck with the hot air trick. I set my hot air gun to it's 650° setting, heated the contacts and went over them with the rounded end of a screwdriver handle on both the board and display side of the cable. Recovered a almost completely blank screen to new. You must keep the hot air moving though as 650° seems to be hot enough to distort the ribbon cable. I tried all of the lower settings with some limited sucess. It wasn't until I hit this temp that I had a lot of sucess.

 | Re: Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Anonymous (2/12/09 9:14 AM) reply | + / - | THIS SAME PROBLEM WAS DRIVING ME NUTS...AMBER LIGHT FLASHING AND NO PAPER JAMS. COULD NOT READ LCD TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG. BUT I FINALLY FIGURED OUT THAT I WAS RUNNING LOW ON BLACK INK. A NEW INK CARTRIDGE FINALLY RESTORED NORMAL OPERATIONS. ISN'T IT FUNNY? ANY OTHER PRINTER WOULD JUST KEEP PRINTING UNREADABLE PAPER WITH NO INK AT ALL, BUT THIS PRINTER REFUSES TO PRINT AND LOCKS UP EVEN BEFORE THE INK IS ALL GONE!!! IT WILL DO THE SAME THING IF THE EXPIRATION DATE HAS PASSED. HOPE THIS HELPS.

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Anonymous (11/6/09 10:31 AM) reply | + / - | I used the hairdryer method and mine went from flat to fluffy. I couldn't read a thing and it is 100% now.

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by Anonymous (2/5/10 11:38 AM) reply | + / - | Well I have replace the LCD screen before. I have mine on a network by IP address. So I can put the IP address in the internet explorer and it tlles me about ink supply even if I can't read the screen.
My problem I need to change the IP address and I can't read the display. I'm trying the hair dryer.
I did find a replacement referb for $85.00 New well pay what you want. 395. is a bad joke.

 | Re: HP CP1700 LCD monitoring display blank by mcprinter (2/5/10 1:43 PM) reply | + / - | I have revived one of these displays by laying aluminium foil(the stuff used in the kitchen) over the connection and running a soldering iron quickly backwards and forwards.
You get the heat required to reattach the connections but not so intense/localised that it melts the cable.
