Epson 1520 by Lew (6/18/04 5:34 AM) reply + / -
My Epson 1520 color stylus prints fine, but after the printing is finished and you expect the printed sheet to come out, it doesn't. You have to manually
pull the sheet out the last 3/4". If you don't pull the sheet out, the next sheet doesn't print correctly.

Is there any way I can repair this problem?

Thanks, Lew

Lew...Just to let you know: The "1520's" are very popular printers, especially because of their "wide carriage/wide printing" format. The only real problems I've seen on the "1520's" are that they are known for having feeding problems. This is especially true if they have been incorrectly reshipped from one place to another, or slightly dropped while being moved. The feed assembly can be more easily "tweeked" or "bent" do to the length of the paper feed assembly and the overall light weight of the "1520 model", compared to say the "3000 or 5000 models". Unfortunatly if that happens there's very little economically that can be done to correct the problem, even according to Epson Tech Support personel. Unfortunatly the "1520" was not even available to be sent back to Epson, for factory repairs. There are actual "Epson Ink Jet Cleaning Sheets" available to order from the Epson Store, on the Epson.Com web-site, at " www.epson.com= ". You might want to try those to see if they help, because thats what I use on the "1520's" that I service in my shop...Good Luck! Denny Conway

The problem is that the paper eject roller, the one closest to the front of the printer, is no longer rotating. On the left side of the roller there's a gear with a coil spring in it which rotates the roller. Replace or repair the coil spring.

Thanks Ron, after checking the paper eject roller I found it was not turning. I could reach in the side and felt the gear but it was not meshing with the driving gear. After removing the top cover I moved the gear and roller until they were back in place, I put the printer back together and it works like new. I purchased this printer used and the eject roller assembly was probably mis-aligned during shipping.
It would make life a lot simpler if more people offered this type of advice...Thanks again

I also have an Epson 1520 with paper feed problems. My problem is that the printer will start to load the sheet to be printed on, and then continue to send it out the top without printing on it. I get a "paper out" indicator light (gee, no kidding). The majority of the time, the printer will not load paper correctly and the printing starts before the paper. I've wasted an enormous amount of paper, ink and time with this printer.

I haven't been able to find the cleaning sheets mentioned above. Are they only available directly from Epson?

Denny states that the 1520 can't be sent back to Epson for repairs! Is this true? Are there any repair directions (PDFs or html pages) available for fixing these printers?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm at my wits end with this "toy" printer!

thanks,
Dave Patterson

Dave: I work for an "Authorized Epson Service Dealer" and I'm sorry, but its true. The "1520" is not eligible to be returned to the Epson Repair Depot...The only source I know of for those "Epson Ink Jet Cleaning Sheets", is directly from the Epson Store on-line, at www.epson.com= ...Other than those sheets, people have had good results cleaning the Pick-Up/Feed-In Rollers with a Rubber Roller Cleaner/Rejuvinator and see if that helps. Some of the best Rubber Roller Rejuvenator that I have ever used, is available in a can: Price = $10, Shipping = $6 ($8 International), from http://fixyourownprinter.com/sp0.html. It is also available as a Rubber Roller Rejuvenator Pad: One pad soaked with rubber restorer, enough to fix several printers and simple directions for use. The price: Send two dollars and a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Laser Service, 1620 Aviation Blvd., Redondo Beach, CA 90278. International customers add another dollar and skip the stamp. See info page at " http://fixyourownprinter.com/kkx3.html " . The biggest problem is that its actually fairly difficult to get into those rollers, just to use that rubber cleaner. Your best bet would be to get an actual Service Manual on-line, to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. You can find the "1520" Service Manual, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=2_18_39 , for around $10.00...Denny Conway

HI I happen to have an 1520 as well. Recently I just fixed it of its clogged head problem, works great now. My main problem however is that it will on ocassion load, print, and eject without a problem; even mulitple pages. But then there are times when I cue up a print and it will just spit out a page and give me the out of paper light. I press the button and it will either load and print or it will do the same thing load and eject. Sometimes I have to do this 5 or 6 times before I get it to finally print properly. Gets kind of anoying when you want to print mulitple pages. Thanks ahead for any help,
Mario

The simple solution to paper feeding problem on Stylus Color 1520 is to clean or replace the paper load rollers. The rollers are located just above the paper guides.

Mario: You may want to try cleaning those "Pick-up/Feed-in Rollers" with a Rubber Roller Cleaner/Rubber Rejuvinator, which seems to work wonders most of the time. Some of the best Rubber Roller Rejuvenator that I have ever used, is available in a can: Price = $10, Shipping = $6 ($8 International), from http://fixyourownprinter.com/sp0.html. See info page at " http://fixyourownprinter.com/kkx3.html ...BERT has suggested that you can temporarily clean the rubber rollers with water on a rag, just for testing and see if the cleaning actually helps. If cleaning does seem to help, then order the Rubber Roller Cleaner. Although alcohol will clean the rollers, it also can dry out the rubber and that can lead to more problems later...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway
