Re: epson c42 plus by Ron (6/7/04 3:43 PM) + / -
The error is either no black or colour ink cartridge or the black or colour ink cartridge is empty.

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (6/21/04 5:30 PM) + / -
Garrry: When both the Power Light and Error Light are on solid at the same time, after installing an ink cartridge, that usually indicates that "one of your ink cartridges is installed incorrectly". If you have your printers Users Manual, then I suggest you look in it and see if that service error condition is actually listed the same for your printer. IF IT IS THE SAME, THEN: You may want to actually remove and reinstall both ink cartridges, to see if that helps. If not, then I would suggest that you simply try cleaning the electrical contacts/chips carefully and gently, with Distilled Water on Q-Tips or on a lint free rag. Its possible that the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge, or inside the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly, may simply be dirty. Using damp Q-tips [not wet or dripping], gently and carefully wipe off the copper colored electrical plates on the cartridges and the electrical contacts inside the holder assy. Its best to use "Distilled Water", because it has less chemicals and minerals in it, than tap water and regular tap water can actually cause additional problems. Use new dry Q-Tips to dry off all the electrical contacts after cleaning...The only way to really eliminate a possible bad cartridge [even if it happens to be a new cartridge], is to actually replace it, or test it in another printer that uses the same cartridge and was working ok with its own cartridges installed. Unfortunatly, that is usually not practical, unless you know someone that has the same printer or uses the same cartridge in their printer...Good Luck! Denny Conway

i run an epson c42 printer on my mac system. it gets very heavy use. i just got the message "Parts inside your printer require maintenance or replacement, call your service company." or something like that.
Is this the end or is there a fix that is less expensive than another printer?
thanks.

Re: epson c42 plus by Ron (6/23/04 3:59 PM) + / -
The waste ink pads will need to be replaced and the waste ink counter reset to zero.

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (6/23/04 5:57 PM) + / -
Steve...A little more information, that may help you: A Service Error where you get a message telling you that "Parts inside your printer require maintenance or replacement, call your service company", is normally a Maintenance Request Error. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and normally your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter, like RON told you. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water, then dry them out and simply reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...There's an "Epson Printer Information Page", located at http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/C60.html , that also includes the C42 model, that might help you further...THIS ADDITIONAL INFO POSTED BY "WES" MIGHT HELP: Wes 12/07/2003 13:57:30 To see what's involved in servicing the waste ink pads try this http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/wip.html [or] Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe ...please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...HERE'S SOME INFORMATION POSTED FROM OTHER PEOPLE, THAT MAY HELP YOU TRY TO LOCATE A SERVICE MANUAL OR A RESET PROCEDURE, IF YOU NEED ONE: "Master 10/05/2002 03:22:56 Re: Epson stylus adjustment programs. You can find any service manual or service adjustment program for EPSON inkjet printers at www.otd.com.ua ". [OR] "Eva 2/14/2003 23:31:11 Re: Epson Color Stylus Error Codes. See http://www.2MANUALS.COM - they have all service manuals and service programs. Due to them I fixed the same error on me C20! They are friendly!" ... Heres a link you can try for Waste Ink Pad Servicing on a C20-C60, that may be of some help: " http//www.wesesweb.web1000.com/wip.html "...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by Carey (7/3/04 4:12 PM) + / -
I have just got the same problem as Steve above, identified by flashing red and green lights on the printer, whether the computer is on or off, and the "parts inside need replacing" indication on the computer, also the print cartridges cannot be moved along to take them out, so my problem is, "How does the cover come off, I could find no screws, only three plastic push-in clips on the back which release the back part of the top but does not seem to free it sufficiently to take it off. Also what do I need to reset the ink waste pads ?
Please could anyone advise me? Thanks Carey.

Re: epson c42 plus by Wes (7/3/04 11:34 PM) + / -
Follow the info from this link http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/C60housing.html For the waste ink pads try here http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/c60wip1.html

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Re: epson c42 plus by Carey (7/5/04 2:18 PM) -1 + / -
Thanks for your help WES and Denny Conway.
I have managed to get the cover off of my C42plus, the instructions for the C 60 seem similar, although the front and side catches I found difficult to get at, but managed.
I have now cleaned out the waste ink pads and the ink collecting mechanism. On my model the waste ink pad is remote from the parking position of the print heads, and is situated at the rear of the printer, and linked by a plastic tube. I found the best way to clean these pads and other ink items is to use a washbasin with an overflow, and simply let the cold water tap run until the water becomes clear.
I have not re-assembled the printer yet because the pads have to dry out etc, (hope I can get the little springs back alright).
Will I have to reset the waste ink counter? I have not found any instruction on that yet.
Thanks
Carey

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (7/5/04 2:42 PM) + / -
Carey: Yes you will have to reset the "Internal Waste Ink Counter", before you can clear that Service Error Condition. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals and or Service Adjustment Programs/Resets for most printers, from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 /- ), or from http://www.user-service-manuals.com/epson-service-manuals.htm, or even from http://www.sm.copyprofi.net/index.htm [check prices of available Service Manuals]...THIS ADDITIONAL INFO POSTED BY "TIM" MIGHT HELP, BUT IF IT DOES NOT WORK ON YOUR COMPUTER SYSTEM, THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO GO ON-LINE AND PURCHASE THAT RESET PROCEDURE AND DOWNLOAD IT TO YOUR COMPUTER: "Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well." ...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by Carey (7/6/04 2:07 AM) + / -
Thanks Denny Conway, I am going through the various websites that you suggest, to try to find out how to reset the waste ink counter.

In cleaning the waste ink nozzle parking assembly, I removed two of the three springs, in order to separate the parts, the very small one was rather difficult to get on and I nearly lost it, but I found that by using a small rubber band to hold the spring on to the upper hook (i.e. the small lever), and then hook it over the lower hook with a small precision screwdriver, then removing the rubber band made the process much easier.
The other difficulty I experienced was getting the waste ink tube back on to the parking mechanism, as it was very stiff to pull it round the circular part it goes through.
How is the waste ink made to go through the tubing to the waste ink pads at the back of the printer? Is there some sort of rotary tubing pump which pumps it, inside this circular housing?
Although the tubing was perfectly clear, it had obviously been working because there was a lot of ink in the waste pads at the back of the computer, which I have now cleaned out so that they are white and like new.
Should you get any more info about the counter resetting procedure, I should be pleased to know about it.
Whilst the cover is off I have taken the opportunity to clean the Nozzles and clean and lightly lubricate the carriage guide shaft
Thanks
Carey

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (7/6/04 9:22 AM) +1 + / -
Carey: I'm sorry, but as an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", I'm limited by Epson Company, as to the information that I'm allowed to release. Unfortunatly, that "SSC Utility" does not always work on all printers and all Operating Systems. If it does not work for you, then you'll have to actually go on-line and buy that reset procedure and download it to clear that Waste Ink Pad Counter...An actual Pumping Mechanism is used to create vacuum, that pulls the waste ink thru the tubing and onto the Waste Ink Pads, where it is absorbed...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

Hello, can anyone help. I'm not quite sure how to insert cartidges into the Epson C42 plus printer. What do I have to do first.I'm sure someone can help, Please.

Thanks

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (7/6/04 12:58 PM) + / -
Nicola: I'm not really framiliar with the C42, but that information can be seen in your User's Manual. In case you do not have your manual, you can go to the "Epson Documents & Manuals" web-site, at www.epson.com . Simply click-on the USER MANUAL link to view that PDF File on your printers on-line User Manual. On the left hand column, click-on the Plus Sign next to "Maintaining Your Printer". Under "Replacing An Ink Cartridge", click-on REMOVING AND INSTALLING INK CARTRIDGES and then read the available information...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by Carey (7/7/04 3:27 AM) +1 + / -
To Nicola
To change the ink cartridges in C42 printer.
Open any file and go to print (click on file then on print)
Then click on preferences. Along the top tool bar you will see Main,Paper,Layout, Utility.
Click on utility, Go to 'Ink cartridge replacement; highlight this and click OK,(there may be several OKs to click on)
Then follow the instructions. Lift the lid of the printer and each ink cartridge will become available in turn.
The cartridge lid is lifted by pulling the catch at the back of the print cartridge towards you and lifting this lid which is hinged at the front, then the ink cartridge just lifts out.
Follow the instructions to fit the new cartridges.
Of course with a new printer you should have all the instructions how to do it.
Carey

Re: epson c42 plus by Carey (7/7/04 3:34 AM) + / -
To Denny Conway and others.
Thankyou very much for all your help.
I have now re-assembled my C 42 Plus, and with the help of the SSC Service Utility I have been able to reset the waste ink pad counter, and the printer works like a dream, I am very pleased with the result.
Carey

Dear Denny I thought I had posted a request to you but I think I emailed it by mistake. I have been given the printer C42 Plus but I have no start up disk can I get a replacenment on line as a download?

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (7/19/04 9:33 AM) + / -
Mae: As your printer model is not listed on the Epson USA web-site, try loading the latest available Printer Drivers, directly from the EPSON UK web-site, at http://www.epson.co.uk/support/download/index.htm . You should delete your old drivers first and then click-on that web-site and enter your printers model and your operating system. Then read the information and follow the prompts, to download the latest available drivers from that Epson web-site...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I have installed my Epson C42 onto another computer and it setup fine,I downloaded the latest drivers no problems but when I want to print something it prints about 5 cm and then ejects the paper...

whats going on ?

can anyone help?

cheza

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (7/26/04 12:00 PM) -1 + / -
Cheza: There's no way for me to actually know, but I would guess a possible Printer Driver issue. At this point, you need to try and determine if the problem is in your printer, or possibly in your Computer System. TRT THIS TEST: Simply remove your Printer cable from your printer and then turn off your printer for about 10 seconds or so. That will delete any old DATA that may have been in the printers system, from when it was actually connected to your Computer System. With paper loaded as normal, simply turn on your printer and it should go to a normal Ready Condition, with only the Green Power Light on. If the Red Error Light is on, then you know there is a problem in the printer itself. Let us know by replying thru this Printer Repair Site and if we can help you further, we will try. If the green power light is on, then simply push-in on the Paper Button and a single piece of paper should feed-in part way and stop. Push-in on the paper button a second time and that piece of paper should feed thru the printer and out onto the Paper Exit Tray/Door area. Try that same test 3 or 4 times, because you are testing the printers Paper Feed Assembly. If all the sheets of paper go thru the printer normally, with no jams or problems, then that indicates that your printers Paper Feed Assembly is working normally. Now try running a "Nozzle Test Page", directly from the printer. With paper loaded, turn the printer off. Hold-in on the Maintenance Button/Paper Button and reach over and turn the Power Button on. Besure to release that power button like normal, but continue to hold-in on that paper button. Once you hear the printer start to operate and a piece of paper starts to feed-in, then release that paper button and the "Epson Internal Self-Test Page" will print out, if everything is working ok in your printer. If that test page fails, then you can assume that there is something actually wrong in your printer. If that test page prints out normally, that indicates that your printer thinks its working ok. If your printer is working ok, then your problem could be in your Computer System/PC: bad drivers, bad printer cable, bad software, incorrect internal PC settings, possible hardware problems [parts problems], virus, etc. If by chance no one else can help you, it might be because this is a Printer Repair Site and it sounds like you may need a Computer Person, rather than a Printer Repair Technician. I'm sorry, I can't really help you, but I do hope someone else replies, that might be able to help you with your computer or software problem...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by Art Cordingley (7/29/04 6:12 PM) +1 + / -
This is for Denny Conway's information, it may be helpful.
I too had the waste ink pad error message. My query thru google led me to an earlier page of 'fixyourownprinter'. The query was from Cath 11/15/2003. 04:02:35. the reply was from Richard 11/15/2003. 08:26:08. I obtained the download from Russia that he advocated and by using various combinations of the instructions finally got the counter reset to zero. a small dialog box popped up saying 'Done' and my C42UX started printing again. How long the fix is good for I have no idea; the printer had been in fairly constant use for two years before the counter kicked in so maybe it is good for another two.

Hope this is helpful.

Art Cordingley.

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (7/30/04 9:31 AM) +1 + / -
Art: There's even a better source for that RESET PROCEDURE and its located at www.resetters.com . As with the "SSC Service Utility", you will have to check to see if it applies to your particular printer model and Operating System...Just to let you know: Simply performing that Reset Procedure is only doing part of the needed servicing. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads or at least clean & dry them, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water, then dry them out and simply reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. There is an "Epson Printer Information Page" that is available to view, at http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/C60.html , that includes your "C42" model. If you click-on WASTE INK PAD SERVICING, you can read the information on how to remove those waste ink pads...Denny Conway

I have an epson c42ux. The red and the green lights are flashing by turn. I also got the message "Parts inside your printer require maintenance or replacement, call your service company."
So I did all the things I read here, I cleaned the wasted ink pads, and after replacing them I resseted the wasted ink pad counter with the ssc utility. When it didn't help I turned my printer on and off and did it again, but it didnt help. He still doesnt print and the lights are still flashing..
Can anyone tell me what to do???

Re: epson c42 plus by Wes (8/3/04 12:19 AM) + / -
You can download the Epson adjustment program from here www.resetters.com The SSC utility is ok but the Epson adjustment program is much better.

Also sometimes you need to reset the protection counter a few times before it resets.

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Re: epson c42 plus by erik (8/3/04 12:50 AM) +1 + / -
Thank you wes for your help.
I allready tryed to reset the protection counter a few times, but that didnt help.
Is it possible that the flashing lights indicate other problems?

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (8/3/04 11:46 AM) + / -
Erik: I looked in the Service Manual and the only listed Service Error Condition for alternatly flashing power & error lights/led's, is that MAINTENANCE REQUEST ERROR. A maintenance request error is actually a "Waste Ink Pad" error. Unfortunatly, the SSC Service Utility does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems. You will have to check on your particular Epson Printer Model, but you may be able to actually get that adjustment program for free, from www.resetters.com . I have never tried that source myself, but it was also recommended by "WES". Just in case that source does not actually work for you, then you may need to go on-line to try and buy and download that actual Epson Reset Procedure...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (8/3/04 12:03 PM) + / -
Darren: Your printer simply receives DATA thru the printer cable, in the form of communication, that tells your printer what to do. You're problem is normally not in your printer, but in your computer system and more likely in its software. Its possible that the problem may be in the actual Scanner Software or the software program that you are trying to print from. I'm sorry I can't really help you on computer or software type problems, because I only work on the printers and related printer driver & printer cable type problems. Just to eliminate the possibility of corrupted printer drivers causing problems, you might want to delete your printer and then go on-line to the EPSON UK web-site and download new drivers. As your printer model is not listed on the Epson USA web-site, try loading the latest available Printer Drivers, directly from the EPSON UK web-site, at http://emeasupport.epson-europe.com/downloads.aspx?LNG=en-GB . You should delete your old drivers first and then click-on that web-site and enter your printers model and your operating system. Then read the information and follow the prompts, to download the latest available drivers from that Epson web-site...If that does not help then you may need to try to get technical support from the manufactor of the software that you are using to print from, or even from the manufactor of your scanner. I hope someone else that reads your posting, may be able to help you further. If not then you may need to get help from a Computer Person/Computer Technician, rather than a Printer Technician, on this PRINTER REPAIR SITE...Good Luck! Denny Conway

denny: i have an epson C42UX that recently started giving me "parts are past their service life" message discussed above. i have followed all the procedures you and "WES" suggested regarding (1) cleaning the waste ink pads and (2) resetting the counter. i have downloaded the ssc service utility, but when i try to use it to reset the counter, i get a message reading "printer off, or some other problem!" (the exclamation point is theirs)
my printer is definitely on, because my red and green lights are still flashing (indicating the initial "parts are past their service life" problem that made me seek your help in the first place) so it must be "some other problem."
any ideas?
on behalf of everyone, thank you for all the help you have given.
mike
ps - the resetters.com option you mentioned is only for windows 98 users (i am XP).

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (8/18/04 5:14 PM) + / -
Mike: The WASTE INK PADS needing to be replaced & the WASTE INK COUNTER needing to be reset, is the only Service Error that I know of, that causes that "parts are past their service life" message, or a simularly worded error message to come on. As I explained to KEN, in the posting just above your message, unfortunatly, that SSC Service Utility does not seem to always work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems. You will have to check on your particular Epson Printer Model, but you may be able to actually get that reset procedure/adjustment program for free, from www.resetters.com . I have never tried that source myself, but it was recommended by "WES". Just in case that does not work, then you may have no choice, but to go on-line to try and locate the actual "RESET PROCEDURE" to buy and download for reference. You may even need the "SERVICE MANUAL" for your printer [if available] for disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have checked and cannot find the "C42UX" model listed as available from the sites I usually recommend, such as "2manuals.com". The only thing I can recommend, is that you go to the "Compass Micro Inc" web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm and check with them directly, to see if they have a Service Manual or Reset Procedure available yet for your "C42UX" printer. Several people have posted that they have manuals available for the newer printers, that are not actually available from 2manuals.com and other normal web-sites...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (8/18/04 5:29 PM) + / -
Ken...FOLLOW-UP TO MY FIRST MESSAGE: As your "C42 plus" printer was made by Epson Company, for sales & distribution outside the USA, I could not find an actual Service Manual available from "2manuals.com". If that "resetters.com" web-site does not work for your printer, then you may have to actually do a SEARCH on the Internet in your area and see if you can actually find a source for a Service Manual for your particular model. I'm sorry, but as I live and work in the USA, I usually only have information available for the Epson Printers actually sold here in the USA. If you want to check, you can go to the Compass Micro Inc web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm and check with them directly, to see if they have a Service Manual or Reset Procedure available yet for your "C42plus" printer. Several people have posted that they have manuals available for the newer printers, that are not actually available from 2manuals.com and the other web-sites that I usually recommend...Again, Good Luck! Hope someone can help, having a nightmare with my epson C42 printer. I've just bought new black ink for it and put the cartridge in, and now whenever I switch it on the cartridges move lift then far right and jerks sharply for about a minute then switches itself off. I thought it was because the ink wasn't coming through, but put my old one in and it seems the same, i'm not even sure if its reading that anymore. You could have defective ink cartridges. Also if you are using generic ink cartridges they are know for that type of problem. You could try removing and reinstalling the ink cartridges to see if that helps.

I miss my H/P printer now for sure. No help from you guys...a cheaper printer was just fine but friend needed one and daughter gave me hers.
Now I am stuck. Probably a little simple something that you guys who know all about printers could take care of, but thus far have only the respose: EPSON STYLUS 670-WHAT MORE CAN I SAY..
Think you could say a lot more things that makes sense to me.....

If you are asking how to change the ink cartridges use this link http://files.support.epson.com/flash/sc670_/emptink.html

If you would have created a new post for your model instead if the C42 you would have had a faster answer.

HI, i have the C42 Plus, and it was working fine, but when I replaced the black cartridge with a unbranded replacement, apparently compatible, now it seams as though black ink is leaking because whenever I print smudges and lines of ink are left over the whole document!! Could it be the cartridge or does the printer just need cleaning, it looks like the rollers are inked up as well. The epson doesnt look very easy to remove the print head for cleaning... Any advice greatly appreciated!! -D1

hi, i need some help with my c42 plus.
Here's the problem. My laptop had problems so it got sent off to get sorted out, they ended up having to wipe my hard drive. Anyway i got it back free of anything i had ever installed on there, now i couldnt find the software that came with my printer. So i tried to download it, i have no idea what i downloaded!!! It just says epson stylus c40 series, not c42 specifically. Whenever i switch my printer on, the green light is permenently on, and the red light just flashes continuously. When i press the red light button, it just feeds a peice of paper through and then carries on flashing. I tried changing the cartredes, but its doing the same thing. Does anybody know or have the exact software for this printer, the one that actually comes with it? I would really appreciate it.
thanks

Laurel, The acutal post, meaning THIS THREAD is on the Epson C42 printer. You tacked a Epson Stylus Color 670 question onto a Epson C42 thread. And then you complain because you did not get an answer. Well DUHH!!! If you created a new post on your specific model you would have had your question answered faster. Epson Stylus 670 is the kind of printer I have. Given to me by my daughter. Had what I thought were new ink pads installed some time ago and now no ink left. As she did not or has not a book to check on this problem and I have no time to read all those letters, AND I installed the two I had purchased and had them installed in Feb. am asking HOW DO I PUT THE PADS IN? Shall try one more time to get it working and then dump it for a HP printer which I hear is much simplar???? Hear you can buy ink pads much cheaper on the internet? Is this so, and if so WHERE?" See you posted a question on a different model than the model this thread is about. You are welcome for the answer on how to change the ink cartridge.

Re: epson c42 plus by Wes (9/1/04 6:02 PM) + / -
Steve I, You might just have ink on the face of the print head. You don't have to remove the print head to to clean it in fact don't remove the print head unless it has failed. The instructions for cleaning the face of the print head can be found here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/phface.html

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Angela, You can download the C42 software from Epson. Just click on this link and it will take you to the C42 driver download page. www.epson.com

As for the lights you can use this link for info on what error the printer has. http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/C60error.html The link is for the C60 but the erroe info is the same for the C42

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Hello,

A friend has bought epson cx3650 since October 2004.He had several problems so returned it for another to Epson,UK.

The problem is "No Communication" with his PC.
He took the whole printer to a friend's house to try it there. The same problem has happened !

What could be the problem? How do we solve it .Any help will be appreciated indeed.

Thanks.

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (2/8/05 3:22 PM) + / -
Robert: Unfortunatly, most Epson Authorized Service Dealers are not actually trained by Epson Company, on the newer printer lines, including the "C", "CX" & "R" models of ink jet printers. I have never even seen your "CX3650" model. Even under warranty, service dealers are not allowed to work on ink jet printers. Warranty printers are simply replaced to the customer, by Epson company...As this is the same problem on two different printers, I would have to guess thats its probably not an actual problem in the printer, but more likely in the Computer Systems. If the problem is being caused by the actual printer, then there's really nothing you can do, because that would indicate an actual hardware/parts failure, probably in the Main Board Assembly. However, most communication problems are normally coming from the Computer System, or the Printer Cable, rather than from the actual printer itself. The most common problem is in the actual Printer Drivers that are loaded into the computer system. Its common for drivers to actually be corrupted, which in turn causes communication issues. You can delete your printer and its drivers and then download the latest available drivers from the Epson Home Page at http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/index.jsp . As drivers are FREE, I usually recommend trying those first if you have a possible communication problem. Bad or corrupted drivers can cause many problems. DEINSTALL [remove] your old printers first and then go to the epson.com web-site. Click-on your particular area, where you live [example: USA]. Then click-on DRIVERS AND SUPPORT and then click-on your particular type of Epson Printer [example: INKJET]. Look under the Ink Jet Printers for your "Epson Stylus CX3650" and click-on it. Once the DRIVERS & DOWNLOAD PAGE opens, read the INFORMATION to locate your particular SYSTEM [Win's 95,98,ME,2000.etc.] and then click-on it. Follow the directions and read all the available information concerning your systems driver downloads. Finally at the bottom of the page, click-on "Printer Software Installation for Windows ___ [Epson Printers]", or the "Download" option button. After the downloading utility opens, read the download information available, make your choices and complete the installation. If new printer drivers do not actually help, then you may need to get help from an actual Computer Technician/Person, rather than a Printer Technician on this Printer Repair Site...Good Luck! After a day of action, success at 'over ride all the built in epson service alerts.' yes its the sscserve.exe program, but I was using an old version, so download the 3.80 which has the reset protection addition. But the way to get it to work is to action the program and the power to the printer at the same time. Because otherwise starting with either the printer 'on' (and the lights flash and it does not work) or its 'off' (and the printer cannot be found!), a lose -lose situation, but operate both together worked because there is a time lag on the red light coming on, and that allows you to reset the counter. Sounds rubbish, well my wifes printer is now working!

Dont use refill kit, it's very troublesome and may damage your printer. You can try some CIS that does not need to reset chipset (automatically reset)

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (3/28/05 11:21 AM) + / -
TCL: If both lights are on SOLID, especially after installing an ink cartridge, that indicates that one of your ink cartridges are installed incorrectly, or simply causing problems. Its even possible that the cartridge you refilled and the chip that you tried to reset with the ink chip resetter, is simply not being recognized by your printer. Especially if that refilled ink cartridge, is actually a "Non-Epson Ink Cartridges". Generic & Third-Party ink cartridges may not always be recognized by the newer models of epson printers, because of the quality of the actual electrical chips mounted on the cartridges. Sometimes you will even get error messages up on your monitors screen, telling you that you are actually using a non-epson ink cartridge, or that your printer cannot recognize the cartridge that you installed. If your printer will not recognize that ink chip or ink cartridge, all you can really do is replace it. Unfortunatly, not all generic & third-party ink & ink cartridges are made the same and none of them actually contain the right formulation of ink, for the Epson Printers [formula is patented by Epson Company]. Some are probably close and seem to be better than others, but some simply won't work at all because they are not actually recognized by the printer. Some can even clog-up or even damage the printhead assemblies on epson printers. Epson ink jet printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks, especially the newer models made in the last couple of years. Its because the epson printers use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers. Most, if not all of the other manufactors, use thermal or bubble jetprint heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. ...Good Luck! I have been trying to install the correct software for a C42 plus in windows XP. The manual won't work from the supplied disc (comes up with a 16 bit windows subsystem error; saying this autoexec NT system file is not suitable for running MS Dos and windowe application). Some software seems to install, but not Status Monitor which is there but greyed out. I have tried downloading xp files from Epson Europe website, but running these comes up with the same error as above. Any ideas? The printer actually works fine - I am just interested to make status monitor work and have a look at the manual to find out what the lights mean. Very impressed by advice given above, nice one people.

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (3/30/05 10:22 AM) + / -
Toby: Because your "C42+" model was made by Epson Company for sales & distribution overseas [usually in the UK and Latin America], I don't have any info on that particular model, here in the USA. You can go to the Epson UK web-site for "Set-Up Guides & Manuals", located at http://esupport.epson-europe.com and view what they offer on your "C42+" model. If that is of no help, then you might want to actually contact the "Epson UK Technical Support Department", for possible help. Simply go to the "Epson Support" UK web-site, located at http://esupport.epson-europe.com/SupportHome.aspx?lng=en-GB , for your available options...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by Toby (4/18/05 9:45 AM) + / -
It could be a few things - did you leave the cartridge overnight after filling? If you seal the hole on the top of the cartridge with tape it might create a vacuum; if you left the cartridge empty for a long time it might have dried out; the jet might be clogged, try the cleaning utility. You could try turning everything off and leaving it for 12 hours. Something similar happened to me and I got the printer replaced under gaurantee.

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (4/18/05 2:06 PM) + / -
Anonymous: The most common problem is clogging of the printhead nozzles, especially because you were actually refilling your old ink cartridges. Just so you will know: Epson ink jet printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks, especially the newer models made with-in the last few years. Epson printers use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers and correct epson ink formulation is vital. Printer manufacters do not make available their ink formulation and in most cases, the formulation is patented. Any difference in the ink formulation can clog the small printhead nozzles or damage other critical components. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair, so you can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged...You might want to try using the "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution", available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged printhead assembly. When it opens, click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" thats listed for your particular printer. The epson solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some epson printhead cleaning solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using epson inks. This is the same chemical used by epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again, but that will only help if they are actually clogged. It was basically designed by Epson Company for use on their older models of ink jet printers, but people have been using it on the newer models, with success reported. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The nozzles inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the epson stylus head cleaning solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the nozzle assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. If you remove the Top Cover Assembly, then you can leave the printhead assembly parked in its normal home position, at the far right side. Then any ink & fluids that are purged during the cleaning, will normally travel thru the cleaning station hoses, to the waste ink pads. If you have the "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly", positioned away from the home position, then you will need to slide strips of paper towels or coffee filters under that assembly, to soak up any expelled ink and fluids, or it can get all over. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never dissolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller epson ink jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Good Luck! Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (4/27/05 11:47 AM) + / -
Janelo: I'm sorry, but once your printers red ink error light comes on solid, you must replace the indicated ink cartridge, just to be able to even use the other ink cartridge. Your printer must have two good ink cartridges in it, before it will actually work. You could purchase an actual "Ink Chip Resetter", to reset the electrical chip on the ink cartridge and that would turn that red ink error light off. However, you would still have to refill that empty ink cartridge, or air would get into the print head nozzles. Air would cause the ink residue inside those nozzles to dry out and that causes clogging and can even damage those print heads. If the print heads cannot be unclogged, or are damaged, then you would have to buy a new printer. Print heads are not economical to replace on a small ink jet printer, which is basically thought of as being disposable in the printer industry...Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by geoff_maynard (4/28/05 11:09 AM) + / -
I'm using a C42+ connected to a Mac running OSX 10.2.8
I am unable to find clear instuctions on how to install new cartridges. I installed a new driver some time ago, not much use because the damn thing won't expose the old cartridges for replacement. In frustration :-) I had to pull the power-cord in order to get the new cartridges in (tricky timing). That worked fine to start with, now it's a few days later and I'm getting only faint ink printed, like it's running out but I have only printed very few (20?) pages of text. This was my first attempt at using 'generic' cartridges. Have I just got a bad batch of cartridges? Did my power-cutting affect something? Can anyone help?

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (4/28/05 11:26 AM) + / -
geoff: Generally speaking, simply dropping the power by pulling the power cord [to replace the ink cartridge], will not usually cause any problems. Unless you leave that "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly" exposed off its normal home position [at the far right end of the printer], for a long period of time. When that happens, the print heads are exposed to the air and that can cause the ink on them to dry out and that can cause clogging problems. My guess is that its actually those Non-Epson Ink Cartridges [generic or third-party cartridges] that you installed. Just so you will know: Unfortunatly, not all "Generic" & "Third-Party" ink cartridges are made the same and none of them actually contain the right formulation of ink, for the epson printers [formula is patented by Epson Company]. Some are probably close and seem to be better than others, but some simply can clog-up or even damage the print head assemblies on epson printers. Epson ink jet printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks, especially the newer models made with-in the last few years. Epson printers use a completely different print head inking system than most other brands of printers and correct epson ink formulation is vital. Most, if not all of the other manufactors, use thermal or bubblejet print heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. There are people that say they use generic or third-party inks or ink cartridges in their epson printer and have never had a problem. I've seen and read about too many problems caused by using non-epson ink, especially on the newer models of epson printers that have come out in the last few years. No matter what anyone says, all blacks and colors are not the same. Printer manufacters do not make available their ink formulation and in most cases, the formulation is patented. Any difference in the ink formulation can clog the small print head nozzles or damage other critical components. One individual print head nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair, so you can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. Epson has many different formulas just for its black ink, for all the different epson printers, let alone for their colored inks. Generally if you are using non-epson ink or ink cartridges, or refilling your old cartridges, you are using the wrong ink for your printer and sooner or later you will have some type of problems, almost everyone does. You are taking your chances by using third-party or generic ink cartridges, or even by refilling your old cartridges. I understand the differences in the costs of the non-epson ink and ink cartridges, compared to the actual epson ink cartridges and the choice is always yours to make. It really does not matter to me what type of ink cartridges you decide to use in your epson printer. Its very common that some brands of non-epson ink cartridges may not always be recognized by the newer models of epson printers. Its usually because of the inexpensive and or incompatable electrical chips that are mounted on some brands of generic or third-party ink cartridges. Unfortunatly, there is no way to make your epson printer use that non-epson ink cartridge, if it cannot actually recognize it. Sometimes you will even get error messages up on your monitors screen, telling you that you are actually using a non-epson ink cartridge, or that your printer cannot recognize the cartridge that you installed. Sometimes the ink level indicator, on your status monitor, will not show an actual ink level, but may indicate a cartridge error or cartridge problem instead. Either you buy an actual epson ink cartridge, or keep trying the non-epson cartridges, until you find a brand that will work in your printer. I have read a suggestion that you can always use an actual epson ink cartridge and when its empty, use the electrical chip off that epson cartridge. You could install the epson chip onto the non-epson ink cartridge, but then you would need an actual "Ink Chip Resetter", to reset that chip, that was marked as empty by your printer. Until that chip is reset, it will not work in your printer. Some people simply refill the empty epson ink cartridge and then reset the electrical chip. The choice on what to do, or what to use is yours to make...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson c42 plus by Denny Conway (4/28/05 11:29 AM) + / -
geoff...Some additional information, for the next time you need to replace those ink cartridges and the actual red ink light is not on: Usually [on most Epson Printers] you just hold-in on the Paper Button for 5 or 6 seconds and that "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly" will move over to the correct position, so that you can remove the old cartridge. Then you lift the "Ink Cartridge Locking Cover" and remove the old cartridge and simply install the new ink cartridge, being sure to remove the yellow pull tape off the new ink cartridge. Then close the locking cover over the newly installed ink cartridge and then simply push in on the paper button, a second time. Your printer should go thru its normal "New Cartridge Initialization" routine, which will reset the Internal Ink Counter and the Ink Levels. Check your ink level, just to be sure that it shows up as a full ink cartridge now. Now your printer knows the new ink cartridge has been installed...IF THAT DOES NOT WORK: Sometimes you even have to trick the printer, just to be able to correctly install or even re-install new ink cartridges. Have your printer turned on, with no paper loaded and leave the top cover open, so you can see the "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly" moving during the next steps. Now simply turn on your printer like normal. Watch inside your printer and you will see the printhead assembly unlock and start moving towards the left slightly. As it moves, unplug your printers power cord from the wall outlet and the printer will shut down. Now that unlocked cartridge holder assembly, can then be manually moved back and forth by hand. Remove the indicated ink cartridge or the possibly incorrectly installed ink cartridge, but only remove one cartridge at a time, even if both cartridges need to be replaced, or were incorrectly installed. Do not install a new cartridge yet, simply close the lid over where the cartridge would normally fit [now that slot/area is empty] and then plug your printer back in and turn it on. The printer will of course not find a cartridge and the RED INK LIGHT will come on SOLID. Now when you push the INK BUTTON the holder assy will move to the correct position for a new cartridge to be installed. Once you install a new cartridge, then close the cartridge locking lever/lid [over the ink cartridge] and push in on the INK BUTTON a second time. The Printer will now assume you installed a new cartridge [which I hope you did] and go thru NEW CARTRIDGE INITIALIZATION. The solid red ink light should now be off, if everything is working correctly. If you need to install a second ink cartridge, then simply start over and do the same procedure again. Once the new cartridge or cartridges have been correctly installed, then simply try running a "Nozzle Test" from your Computer System and see if your printer is printing correctly, or not. If it is not printing, or if you simply reinstalled the previously installed cartridges, you can try running sets of "printhead cleaning cycles" and "nozzle tests" to try and get those nozzles to open up again and the ink to start flowing. Just so you will know: All new Epson Ink Cartridges are sealed and there is pressure put in them at the factory. When you install a new ink cartridge, that internal air pressure is what causes any air that got into the nozzles [such as when you removed the old ink cartridge] to be pushed out of the nozzles and primes the nozzles with fresh ink. If you reinstall the origional cartridge that you removed, it not only has already lost its internal air pressure, but now there is air inside of the actual printhead nozzles. That air starts to dry out any remaining ink inside of the nozzles and that normally results in clogging. Thats why Epson says to always install a New Epson Ink Cartridge, anytime you remove any ink cartridge, even if its full of ink. Also, if the old cartridge was out of the printhead holder assembly for more than 30 minutes, the nozzle may have already started to clog. If you choose to just reinstall an old Epson Ink Cartridge, with no pressure inside it will also be difficult to get the ink to start flowing again. You may have to run 6 to 10 sets of "Printhead Cleaning Cycles" and "Nozzle Tests", to actually be able to get the ink to start flowing correctly again. The only problem is that running those tests wastes a lot of ink, but you may have nothing to loose at this time.On some models, you could install a new cartridge and run between 10-15 cleaning cycles and tests and its possible to empty the new cartridge. You may have to run as many as 5 or 6 sets of tests, to try and get the Printhead Nozzles to open up again and start printing. Remember that you have to run a nozzle test after every printhead cleaning test ran, because the nozzle test is used as a point of reference for the next cleaning test you run. If after 6 sets of tests you cannot get the printing to completely start up, Its always possible that you might have a possible clog. Then you might have to try using a "Printhead Cleaning Kit", to try and get all those nozzles open again...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

I bought a Computer and new Epson Stylus C42 Plus approx. 2 1/2 years ago in the UK, where I reside.

I have generally had no trouble with my printer up until now, except to say that the ink levels do not show when using the 'Printing Preferences' facility. Hovever this is not a problem for me as I do realise when the ink cartridges need changing. I have always used a very good Generic chipped brand of Cartridge as it is very difficult to get Epsom cartridges here at even vaguely decent prices, and I find them Cost-prohibitive.

The CRUX OF MY PROBLEM IS:- both the red and green lights on the printer are flashing ,and nothing I do (Computer wise or program wise) makes any difference. I simply CANNOT get the thing to print, whatever I do!!!

I have read the information from this website, but have no idea what the waste ink pads are, never mind how to find what I am looking for (Sorry, I'm a bit of a technophobe!) Also wonder if it is certain that that that IS the problem with the printer? I have NEVER had any messages come up on my computer to tell me anything about the printer whatsoever!

If anyone can tell me anything about this, and advise me (in very simple layman's terms) it would be a great hepl, as otherwise I am going to have to buy another Printer, and can little afford that! I use the printer constantly, both for my own business and my Partner's business, and as it is the begining of the month, am desperately trying to get the invoices etc. out. URGENT HELP IS NEEDED. Thanks. Mel.

Melanie: A service error condition where both led's/lights are flashing at the same time, or on some models the lights will be alternatly blinking, is a "Maintenance Request Error". The maintenance request error is actually a "Waste Ink Ink Pad Error" and your remedy is to replace the waste ink pad/pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see exploded parts diagrams for most epson ink jet printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that waste ink counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work. There is an "Epson Stylus C60 Printer Information Page", that also includes the C42 series, that you can view at http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/C60.html . It does have a section on the left side you can click-on, titled WASTE INK PAD SERVICING and also a section titled HOUSING REMOVAL, that may be of some help to you, if you want to try the needed servicing. However, you will still need to go on-line and buy and download the actual reset procedure, to clear the actual Waste Ink Conter, especially if the free "SSC Service Utility", available at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe , does not actually reset that counter for you. Unfortunatly, that utility only works using a windows operating system. You can check and see if your particular epson printer is compatible, by going to http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html ...Here's some previously posted info that may also help. "NEWUSER Re: Epson Error and power light flashing by newuser (4/5/05 11:10 AM). To reset the error download this utility: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . Once installed run the program and configure it, closing the main window and right clicking the icon in the tray area, from there choose Configure and select your printers model. After configuration, select Protection counter -> Reset protection counter, it should be able to clear the error message. If that does not actually work, then the only suggestion I can give is to perform a soft-reset before resetting counter. Remove also the Epson status agent, it detects errors and it may hinder communication with the printer, then reboot your pc. As profile choose the one sscservice didn't use after autoconfiguration, check for printer response. Remember that you should also clean the waste ink pads located at the printer bottom. For a more in-depth procedure by NEWUSER, go to his site at http://myprinter.altervista.org/simplefaq/mysimplefaq.html#counter "....Unfortunatly, that ssc service utility may not actually work on all epson printers and not on all operating systems, so you will have to check it out for yourself. It's a common issue, your system has been probably damaged by a worm or trojan.

This problem is covered in the MS knowledge base:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

but there is also a free tool to fix the error, Xpfix you can download at:

Hi folks,
Wondering if you can help (this isn't a question about ink cartridges, altho I may be wrong).
Basically, the paper won't load and the status monitor tells me it's a jam... but there's no paper jammed that I can see. Neither the maintenance or the eject buttons work or, rather, the wheels spin around but no paper comes through. The paper is being loaded ready to go through but then stops just short of the rollers. I think it started when it tried to load some paper that was slightly wrinkled, but I have no idea what's wrong. I suppose my questions are, is it a part that needs fixing and then is it worth fixing or, alternatively, should I be getting the front cover off to get a closer look (I'm apprehensive about this as I have no technical knowledge when it comes to hardware and so would need guidance). Finally, my colour cartridge is low, could this have something to do with it? Thanks for any help, Matt.

After reading your forum, I have a quick question.

I have an Epson Stylus C20SX which has both LEDs flashing alternately, which from reading your forum, has something to do with a "Waste Ink Ink Pad Error"? Anyway, as per your instructions, I have downloaded the SSC Service Utility in an attempt reset the protection counter. I have downloaded it and installed it but whenever I try to communicate with the printer I get the error message "Printer off, or some other problem!". I know that the printer is being recognised by the PC as I have successfully installed it, but wonder what else could be wrong? Any ideas? I am running Windows XP SP2.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Re: epson c42 plus by Anonymous (6/29/05 1:50 AM) + / -
Denny,

Thanks for that. It appears that just turning both the printer and the PC off and then back on again seemed to do the trick. I was able to reset the Protection counter which cleared the error message and I was able to troubleshoot further. I printed a test page which was blank, tried to clean the print head, but to no avail. Then moved the print head into the cartridge replacement position, looked at the cartridges, they seemed fine. Then I noticed that inside the printer something below where the printer head sits had worked its way loose and rattles around inside. I then followed your link http://myprinter.altervista.org/simplefaq/mysimplefaq.html#counter and in turn followed the link from that website to http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/ (incidently the link on the above site doesn't work because it is missing an 'r' in printer) and their information regarding taking the printer to bits seems extremely helpful and I will try it later.

Thanks for your help.

Well done you guys. I had the same problem (C42+, parts need replaced, contact manufacturer, or something), found your thread and followed it through, and had the printer working again within the hour. Only difference was that I found I could extract the waste ink pads through a small gap in the back of the printer (after removing the main cover), and used tissue in their place temporarily while they dried out from the washing. Thanks for your help. Phil Carr.

The next day I wanted to print and the same problem happen again. But the clean cycler does not work and it gave me an error message. Is there anyway to reset the epson ink chip or what els can I do? The SSC software does not work. Please Help

Re: Re: epson c42 plus by Anonymous (7/6/05 5:02 PM) + / -
The small spring fits from the front bottom left corner of the main inktray body, there should be a plastic pin sticking inwards, to the right hand end of the white plastic lever arm (again plastic pin) that fits between the moving tray and main body at the front. Its a bit fiddly to fit as the distance it stretches is a lot longer than the spring and its in an awkward place. Hope this helps.

sweda: If your printer is actually a "C42UX", then go to http://www.epson.com . problems. DEINSTALL [remove] your old printers first and then go to the epson.com web-site. Once that DRIVERS & DOWNLOAD PAGE opens, read the INFORMATION to locate your particular SYSTEM [Win's 95,98,ME,2000.etc.] and then click-on it. Follow the directions and read all the available information concerning your systems driver downloads. Finally at the bottom of the page, click-on "Printer Software Installation for Windows ___ [Epson Printers]", or the "Download" option button. After the downloading utility opens, read the download information available, make your choices and complete the installation...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Hello Denny,

I'm afraid the links suggested in this posting are to some sites that offer some contacts with attractive ladies (with clothes) from various parts of the world.

I'm struggling to find the utility that works with my C42 plus to do that resetter thing. I was able to download ths SSC version 4.00 and although it would give a reading for ink levels, it says things like "Device not detected" and reminds me to take a chip out but I can't goany further. Any new links very welcome.

Thanks, Donald.

OK. I've started to get somewhere with the software at last and did manage to do a resetting of the waste counter. Also changed the ink pad.
It printed a couple of pages then quit on me.
Now when trying to do the "Print nozzle check pattern, I get this message:
"This function isn't supported in current printer state."
Can this happen if black ink is low?
Thanks for such a useful site, Donald.

i have just had the same trouble with the flashing LED's and the message 'Parts inside are at the end of service life' following the threadss belaow are excerlent, well done, but the problem is getting the cover off the printer, mine had no screws. Sart at the front corner and gentle lever the top plastic clip inside the printer away from the bottom, go to the other corner do the same, make sure the otherside does not slip back in, you then can easily work your way round to the back. Mt problem was that the two ink pads at the back that collect all the waste ink was full, it takes ages to clean them out, let them dry put them back put cover on, use the chip resetter as mention below in the freeze and soft mode (it does work) try all the resets if those dont work, but do not purge your cartridge read the help menu it is really good. To get at all these right click on the Icon at the bottom of you screen right hands side. Well done all you who went before this, saved me a packet and its a good printer.

Re: epson c42 plus by TeeCee (4/8/06 7:09 PM) + / -
We have an epson stylus c42ux printer that is couple years old & has been working great but got maintenance message after which it refused to print. We are indigent & can NOT afford to take it in for repairs or buy a new one (we were told to 'throw it out' as new ones are cheaper than repairs). We were happy to find your site & figured we'd attempt the do-it-yourself repair route -- however, after several days of frustrated thread-reading, web-searching, & PARTIAL self-repair, this is where we stand: We managed to get the cover off (it was NOT easy & were afraid we would break/crack it; used a flat-head screwdriver to push in the 3 back slots, then have to work your way around the cover's sides & it 'snaps' loudly when doing so!), managed to get the (2) ink cartridges removed but did not find any "pads" mentioned so we cleaned the plastic platform underneath w/Q-tips. After further reading we found the thread (per Carey 7/5/04) saying the pads were "remote"/in the rear so were able to discover WHERE they were & removed, washed & dried them. In doing all this we did not attempt or need to undo the tubing (not wanting to disturb the "vacuum") nor any of the springs. So many people in this thread say "thanks" as they obviously got things working again, but we are stuck. After reading everything it seems all we need to do (per Carey 7/7/04) is RESET THE COUNTER & it will work again BUT this is where the frustration sets in -- we've been to numerous sites listed in this thread (plus searched Ask Jeeves, About.com, Google, etc!) & have gotten no answers. The epson.com site does NOT provide this info; the exploded parts diagram at compassmicro.com only show faint numbered drawings with no explanations; the epsonhelp.freehttp.com is only lists other commercial sites & we could not find any left-side "waste ink pad" or "housing" references (per Denny 5/3/05); epsonhelp.web1000.com/C60.HTML redirects to chamber of commerce site & epsonhelp.web1000.com/WIP.HTML redirects to an X-rated(!) site; we tried several SSC downloads but all that comes up is "garbage" text (what 'application' to use? we have a MAC!); & finally the resetters.com that is supposed to give instructions comes up in RUSSIAN & we do not know how to convert it to English? HELP! WHERE is the counter, what does it LOOK like, & HOW do you reset it -- DETAILS PLEASE! My printing que is backed up & need answer ASAP! TCL

ATTN: Carey, Your 7/7/04 post states you were able to reset the printer counter -- could you PLEASE explain HOW? (We tried to download the SSC item several times & only came up with "garbage" text that is unreadable.) WHERE is the counter located on the printer, what does it LOOK like, & how is it RESET??? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

It is a eprom it's not a actual counter with a reset button.

at the paper feed part of the printer
look for the grey rubber thing which turns and takes paper in
gentry push it up or down, it should, sort of, click into a position like a switch

if found 3 of these printers in the garbage which were fixed by doing this

Hi

Don't know if anyone can help?

I have 2 Epson printers -c42 plus and c44 plus and am suffering the same problem with both. We have lost the instructions for each

I have changed the cartridges on both and now when I start up the printer/s the carriage holding the cartridges moves up and down before retreating into the printer housing on the right hand side and repeatedly "banging itself" against the right hand side.

I have unplugged them and turned on again later and they just do the same thing.

What can I do? Is to do with using non-standard cartridges?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

C

Just experienced the same problem.

Unplug the printer. Open the front panel. Manually move the print head/ink assembly past center to the left. Look inside to the right and down. There is a white nylon assembly with ink on it. Put your finger on it and gently push down. It will lock in the down position. The print head/ink assembly can now travel all the way to the right and it's home position. Plug the printer back in and run a nozzle check.

What prompted this to happen I don't really know, but I suspect that having the black cartridge run out of ink contributed.
