 | Epson C84 by Herb (6/2/04 3:25 PM) | + / - | Hi Everyone, I have a new Epson C84 printer which replaced my old Epson 740. With the 740 when the printer gave a message that a ink tank was empty you could fool it by just taking the nearly empty tank out...then putting it back in. Doing so gave you the ability to use then tank when it was really not empty. My C84 is telling me my black tank is empty..but I suspect it still has some ink in it. Is there any way you can fool the C84 as you could the 740? I tried the 740 method but it does not work. TIA Herb

 | Re: Epson C84 by edufixitguy (6/2/04 3:49 PM) | + / - | a few things you should know about the epson printers: the C84 (and many others) has a smart chip on the cartridge that counts the number of times each nozzle fires, and how much ink it uses. it disables printing when there is just enough ink in the cartridge to keep the printheads moist without drawing air into them. if air gets in the printheads and dries them out they are nearly impossible to fix and at the price of $90 each for new heads (black and color) plus new ink, it's better to go ahead and buy the new ink than worrying about the extra 5 pages you can get out of the old one. for epson printers which are having problems with white streaks in the print due to dried out heads or clogs, running several cleaning cycles to unclog the printheads may work...and while this works most of the time, stubborn clogs may have to be sent in to epson for some special procedures to try to save the printhead or printhead replacement. both of which are costly. to run the cleaning cycles, DO NOT USE THE FRONT PANEL BUTTONS you MUST run the cleanings from within the printer driver itself!... EPSON engineers, in their infinite wisdom decided that there were too many customers wasting ink with over-cleaning when it was not needed, so they introduced a "dummy" cleaning cycle.... on many models, when you clean with the buttons on the control panel, all it does is wipe the squeegee across the heads and make the cartridges dance. NO INK is forced throught the heads to free the clog! *****NOTE! there are three levels of cleaning from the driver. quick clean, intermediate clean (or deep clean) and PRIME. DO NOT USE PRIME UNLESS YOU HAVE NEW CARTRIDGES INSTALLED! prime uses almost 30% of a new cartridge!!!!

 | Re: Epson C84 by Herb (6/2/04 6:51 PM) | + / - | Hi edufixitguy. Many thanks for taking the time to provide me with your very informative comments. I will take your advice. As I had suspected things have changed quite a bit ink tank wise since the Epson 740 days. I am using a MAC and I also posted my question on their tech forum. One of the folks who responded informed me of this web site forum. A URL I will surely hang on to!! One of the replies on the MAC forum provided me with this web site: http://www.epsonchipresetter.com/ But, after reading what you said I suspect the purchase and use of this gadget might cause more problems than it fixes. Just wonder...have you heard of this zappe? Again, many thanks for your help.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (3/20/05 4:57 PM) | + / - | Thank you for all this informative info on the Epson printers. I learned a lot from reading these threads. I have the C84 for about a year and a half. This week it no longer prints red even after replacing the red and all the other colors were fine as they also had been replaced withing the twp weeks. After running several print cleanings both from the printer button and also from the pc, all it did was eat up 3/4 of my black ink and some of the colors ink tanks, and yet still does not print the red. So all this did was waste lots of ink and $$$. =(

 | Re: Epson C84 by Denny Conway (3/22/05 11:12 AM) | + / - | Anonymous: Its always possible that the Magenta Ink Cartridge is bad [even though its new], especially if you are using non-epson ink cartridges in your printer. It's also possible that you may even have an actual hardware/parts problem, such as a failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly. However, normally the most common problem is clogging of the Printhead Nozzles, especially if you were actually using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged printhead assembly. When it opens, click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" thats listed for your particular printer. The Epson solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson printhead cleaning solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again, but that will only help if they are actually clogged. It was basically designed by Epson Company for use on their older models of ink jet printers, but people have been using it on the newer models, with success reported. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. If you remove the "Top Cover Assembly", then you can leave the printhead assembly parked in its normal home position, at the far right side. Then any ink & fluids that are purged during the cleaning, will normally travel thru the cleaning station hoses, to the waste ink pads. If you have the "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly", positioned away from the home position, then you will need to slide strips of paper towels or coffee filters under that assembly, to soak up any expelled ink and fluids, or it can get all over. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never dissolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller Epson Ink Jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Good Luck! | Re: Epson C84 by christopherjoe (4/5/05 7:02 PM) | + / - | I found this thread via an internet search. I would be grateful for any help and advice.
I love my C84, however I just did a nozzle check and noticed that the Cyan had a gap in it. So I ran the Head Cleaning utility, checked it, no change, ran it again, worse, again, again and again. And every time the Cyan became worse, (more gaps) and now the black is terrible. The black looked fine the first time I ran the check.
I had this printer about 14 months with no problems. I had this same problem with my 740, so I replaced it with the C84.
I only ever use Epson inks, I make sure that I print a least a few times a week, and I always replace a cartage as soon as the printer says it is empty.
So, my questions: 1. How can cleaning the heads seam to make the problem worse? and even effect a color that appeared fine in the first place? 2. Someone mentioned "deep cleaning" in an earlier post. Is this only available through the PC driver. I am on a Mac, OSX, and I only see "Clean Print Heads" as and option available to me in the Epson Printer Utility. 3. Will this keep happening? Are these printers just disposable? I was thinking about buying the R800, (I think that is the model), but it's $399. I would need that to last more than 14 months at that price.
Thanks for any help and advice. Chris

 | Re: Epson C84 by Denny Conway (4/6/05 9:43 AM) | + / - | Chris: The "deep cleaning" is available by using the SSC Service Utility, but I've read that it does not work on Mac Systems, only on Window's PCs. In case you want to actually check it out, that ssc service utility is available to view at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . You can see if your printer & operating system is compatible to using that system, by going to http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html ...Unfortunatly, its turned into a disposable world any more and no printers are made to the quality that your "740' was. People want and buy inexpensive ink jet printers from almost ALL MANUFACTORS, at a tremendous rate. The small inexpensive ink jet printer, is basically reguarded as being more or less disposable in the Printer World, especially anything under $100. Unfortunatly, its also starting to look like most printers under $150 are getting to be more or less disposable, as well. Printers were more expensive just a few years ago, but they were also built better and seemed to last longer. It seems like as the selling prices started to come down, so did the quality of the printers. Of course the quality of the actual printing is much better and printers made now can do a lot more, then most of the older models could. I know we get what we pay for, but it's still a shame. Unfortunatly, just because a new printer costs more, does not always mean that it will last longer. Thats simply a chance that you take. Some sales outlets offer an extended service contract and several people have reported that they were glad that they purchased that contract, but thats your choice to make...Unfortunatly, theres no way to really know what went wrong when you were doing those cleaning cycles. It's also possible that you may have a different problem, which unfortunatly seems to be quite common on the newer "C" series printers. If you were to do a search on this Printer Repair Site, you would see that you are not alone in your problem. I've read several posted messages on this Printer Repair Site on just that particular problem and or very simular problems. I recommend that you do a general search on the "fixyourownprinter.com" printer repair site, under your C84 printer and then you can read about other peoples experiences, their advise and even what they have tried, sometimes successfully. It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a hardware/parts failure, but no way for me to really know. It seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges as normal, or from simply running sets of "Print Head Cleaning Cycles" & "Nozzle Tests". I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about other peoples reports, just in case it happens to apply in your case. There is a "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", available to view at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html , that covers the most common problem in the "C82", "C64/C84" & "CX5200" series of printers...There is also a free download of an "Epson Stylus Color C63/C64/C83/C84 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson . That manual may be of some help as reference , disassembly and troubleshooting of your printers possible problem...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson C84 by Denny Conway (4/14/05 4:51 PM) | + / - | bob: You might want to try downloading and reinstalling the STATUS MONITOR drivers and see if that corrects your problem. You can go to the Epson web-site for "Drivers & Downloads - Epson Stylus Color 740", located at http://www.epson.com . Simply select the status monitor drivers for your computers operating system and click-on them to start the actual download...I hope that helps...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson C84 by mrz75 (4/15/05 5:32 PM) | + / - | I have two C84's. One slightly older than the other. The older of the two is now diplaying a status box on the PC screen with a yellow triangle and exclamation point and the words "SERVICE REQUIRED. Parts inside your printer have reached the end of their service life." I am at a loss as to what these parts are and how to replace them or get them replaced. Is it time to throw this printer out and get a C86? The printer is only about 18 months old. The printer continues to operate, and output is okay, but this warning message still appears. I contacted Epson tech support by email, but they have so far not responded (been about four days now). Any words of wisdom?

 | Re: Epson C84 by Denny Conway (4/18/05 1:51 PM) | + / - | mrz75...Just to let you know: Simply resetting that "Maintenance Request Error", is only doing part of the job and its possible that you could have additional problems later. The maintenance request error is actually a "Waste Ink Ink Pad Error" and usually your remedy is to replace the waste ink pad/pads with a new one/ones and then reset the "Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter", which of course you already did. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Parts Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend trying that "SSC Service Utility" that WES mentioned, to make sure your printer will then work. There is an "EPSON C64/C84 Disassembly Instructions Page", that you can view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/c648.html , that may be of some possible help. There is also a free download of an "Epson Stylus Color C63/C64/C83/C84 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson . That manual may be of some help to you, in actual disassembly and servicing of those waste ink pads, if you actually want to perform the needed servicing on your printer. However, you may still need to go on-line and buy the actual reset procedure, to clear the actual Waste Ink Counter, if the free SSC Service Utility does not work on your particular model of printer, or on your computers operating system...Good Luck! | Re: Epson C84 by Denny Conway (5/2/05 11:04 AM) | + / - | June: Unless the paper is actually feeding in really crooked, or at actual angle and causing paper jams, there's probably not much you can easily do. Other than adjusting that paper edge guide, like you are already doing. Sometiomes a foreign object [paper clip, push pin, etc] will fall into that paper feed-in area. That will cause the paper to jam or at least feed-in crooked, when the paper runs into that foreign object. Remove all the paper and use a flashlight to look carefully into the paper feed-in area. Look for a pen, pencil, push pin, paper clip, candy, etc. If you can't see anything, then actually pick your printer up and turn it so the paper opening is facing down and shake it a little, side to side. Your trying to dislodge anything that might be stuck in the paper entrance area. If nothing falls out, then turn it back over and use the flashlight to once again look inside that area. Sometimes you'll see an object that may have moved over into view while you were shaking the printer. Any foreign object might block the paper from actually being able to move forward, so then the printer thinks there is no paper installed. You may have to even remove the Top Cover to be able to get a better view of that paper feed area. Unfortunatly, just removing that cover is not always that easy, especially on the newer Epson Printers. You may need a Service Manual for reference, disassembly and troubleshooting. There is a free download of an "Epson Stylus Color C63/C64/C83/C84 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson . That manual may be of some help in troubleshooting your printers possible paper feed related problem. There is an "EPSON C64/C84 Disassembly Instructions Page", that you can view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/c648.html , that may also be of some possible help. Even if there is not a foreign object stuck in that area, with the top cover off, you might just possibly see what the problem is and even be able to correct it...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I replaced the low ink cartridges with new ones (I have always used Epson cartridges) and now the printer will not lay down any ink. The printer runs as if it is printing, but the paper comes out just as clean as it went in. Has anyone heard of this problem? Is there anything I can try or would it be easier to just purchase a new printer?
Thanks for any help.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Denny Conway (8/3/05 9:15 AM) | + / - | ProfessorJB: Its possible that you could have an actual hardware/parts related problem, such as a failing print head assembly, or possibly even a clogged print head assembly. However, the most common problem is that a small hose falls off, causing a loss of printing ability. You might want to check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html . It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a hardware/parts failure, but no way for me to really know. The most common failure seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, or simply happens during normal use of the printer. The most common problem found on some of the newer "C" & "CX" printers, is the tubing on the cap assembly becomes disconnected. The cap assembly can't clean the print head if the tube is detached. That information page may be of some help on your printers possible problem, if that tube has actually come off. I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about other peoples reports, just in case it happens to apply in your case...HERE'S SOME PREVIOUSLY POSTED INFORMATION THAT MAY APPLY ON YOUR PRINTERS PROBLEM. IT SEEMS TO APPLY TO SEVERAL OF THE NEWER MODELS OF EPSON PRINTERS AND IS THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM REGUARDING BLANK COPIES: AVTECH 3/14/2004 16:39:23 Re: Epson C82 Not Printing. If anyone is interested, I was successful in repairing my C82's problem with printing blank pages. I noticed that under the pad where the heads sit when parked, there is a black hose attached to it. That black hose is supposed to be attached to another clear hose. Mine was not. The clear hose was sitting there attached to nothing. I took the cover off of the printer, and pulled the seating pad over to the right. I was then able to use a pair of needlenose pliers and a pair of tweezers to put these 2 hoses back together again. I then powered up the printer and ran a head cleaning. Much to my surprise, the hoses blew apart again, leaving a pretty good mess with ink splatters. I cleaned up, then removed the hose clamp from the hose which is visible at the front of the assembly. I then transferred it to the hoses under the pad. I then used a simple wire tie to re-clamp the front hose. I then ran a head cleaning again. this time, everything stayed together. I re-connected to my PC, ran a nozzle check, and voila, it prints. A few head cleanings later, and it was printing like normal again. It took about 2 hours to figure out how to get it apart and find the problem, but, now my printer is functional again. Hope this helps. I wish I had taken pictures to show the steps...[OR]...FOLLOW_UP INFO POSTED BY: dieter 3/24/2004 10:13:30 Re: Epson C82 Not Printing-->FIXED! The posting of AVTECH on 3/14/04 actually fixed my c82 on the spot. The repair took 30 min without proper finger-pliers. With long pliers it can be done w/o opening the cover. I have had problems with the head clogging on the C82. After spending a small fortune on new cartridges to find it still didn't work (it is just out of warranty, been 14 months old) I took off the lid (4 screws, 4 plastic latches). I found under the cleaning pad the suction hose (a small plastic pipe) had come loose, so any number of head cleans were a waste of time as the ink wasn't been drawn thro'. The most difficult part was reconnecting the tiny hose onto the plastic nipple under the cleaning pad (in the end my girlfriend with her small fingers and two pair of thin nosed pliers did the job). The pad itself is on a 'drawer' that slides to the right of the printer, so you can access underneath it. I would suggest everyone with problems of head not cleaning should check for this - providing their own printer is out of warranty. I can provide greater details of this if you are interested. I am not a repairer by trade though, but it has been successful for me. All the best, Martyn...P.S. Remove all 4, unclip the case at the four points marked by arrows (one on each side and two on the bottom, then the last retainer is on the inside of the case on the left hand side (opposite the ink pad), release that and pivot the case open to the right. Tweezers and two zip ties fixed mine, and three nozzle checks gave good prints again. | Re: Epson C84 by Denny Conway (8/11/05 12:52 PM) | + / - | Jabin: You're co-worker probably damaged your printer, I'm sorry to say...The following information was created for the older models of Epson Ink Jet Printers. However, it may also apply to the newer models as well. At the very least, you can use this information as a guide on your newer model printer. Just to let you know, most Epson Authorized Service Dealers are not actually trained on the newer "C", "CX", "R" or "RX" models. This info covers the most common paper feeding or paper jam related problem, or when paper won't feed in correctly after a bad jam was removed, or even when your computer thinks you are actually out of paper or the paper is not loaded correctly. You may have to use it as more of a guide, on your printers possible paper related problems. If you have recently had a bad paper jam that you had to forcefully yank out of your printer, especially towards the rear of the printer, in the backwards direction, then its possible that a part was unhooked/unseated, or even damaged. When paper is pulled to the rear/backwards with force, it usually unseats the arm on the "Paper Jam Sensor Assy", resulting in a constant jam condition. Normally, as paper passes thru the printer, it causes a black plastic arm [with a spring attached] to be pushed forward out of the "Paper Jam Sensor". As the trail edge of the paper leaves the plastic arm, the spring causes the plastic arm to be pulled back into its normal position [into that sensor assembly]. When the arm does not correctly return, the sensor is not activated and the printer thinks there is a paper jam [even though you can not see any paper in the paper path], or does not correctly feed-in the paper, because the sensor is not correctly actuated. Of course I have no way to really know whats wrong with your printer, or even if this is your problem but you have to start some place and I've seen this happen many times. Because of the disassembly and troubleshooting involved, you will find it easier to do with a Service Manual for reference. You have to realize that your printer does not actually have the ability to see any paper in your printer. It depends on electrical signals transmitted thru sensors, to determine if there is a jam or if the paper is out. Usually what happens is that the plastic arm is unhooked at its pivot points, or sometimes actually broken/damaged and cannot return back into the paper sensor. You would have to remove the printers "Top Cover" to be able to shine a flashlight in to possibly see the arm of the paper jam sensor. Again, even removing that Top Cover may require a Service Manual to use for reference and probably even for troubleshooting your possible problem. If you can get the "Top Cover" off: Most of the time you will have to carefully, partially remove the plastic "Paper Holder Assy" in the rear of the printer[usually 2 screws], far enough to be able to fully see and hopefully be able to reinstall the arm assy into its pivot points/holder assy [providing that is your problem, of course]...TECH NOTE: You will need to turn the printer around to disassemble and partially remove the paper holder assembly...WATCHING NOW FROM THE REAR SIDE: Closely observe how the "paper holder assy" comes out/slides out, esp on the left side. The right side is normally just held in by a screw, but the left side [also held in by one screw] is also positioned under and slightly into the paper feed clutch/motor assy. You usually don't need to fully remove the left end of the paper holder assy to be able to see and reconnect the sensor's arm and spring. You do need to be able to reinstall the left end back under/into that clutch assy, or paper won't feed-in correctly. Go slow and LOOK AT EVERYTHING CLOSELY. Check every thing/every step VERY CLOSELY, so you can put it back together again correctly. If the sensor's arm was not broken, or damaged [and its normally just unhooked] you can just try to correctly reinstall it back into its normal position. Once the sensor's arm is correctly positioned, then slowly and carefully reassemble everything, except leave the "Top Cover" off for testing. TECH NOTE: On some Epson models, when you remove the top cover, there is a "Ribbon Cable" [electrical cable] plugged into the top cover itself. If you are not careful, you may find that you have to replug that Ribbon Cable back into its connector on the top cover, for testing purposes. Plug-in and turn-on the printer, but don't load any paper yet. If no immediate jam indicator comes on [once the printer is turned back on], it usually indicates the sensor assy is working normally now. Now load paper as normal [with the top cover still off] and if no "Error Lights/LED's" come on, push the paper/resume button to feed in paper part way [as normal]. Push the same button a second time to finish feeding the paper thru the printer. If successfull, run the same test several times, just to be sure. If the paper does not feed in, you'll probably have to start over on the disassembly of the "paper holder assy" and try to see what went wrong while you performed the reassembly/reinstallation of that assembly. Of course, if that sensor arm was not your problem, once the Top Cover is off, you may be able to actually see the possible problem. You may still need to try and locate an actual Service Manual on-line, to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing...There is an "EPSON C64/C84 Disassembly Instructions Page", that you can view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/c648.html , that may be of some possible help to you. There is also an "Epson Stylus Color C63/C64/C83/C84 Service Manual" available at http://www.colorbat.com/PDF_Files/C84%20Service%20Manual.pdf , that may also be of some use to you...Good Luck! When my Epson C84 printer runs out of ink in one of the color cartridges, it won't let me print anything without changing that cartridge, even if what i'm printing is black and white and doesn't need that particular color. Is this supposed to be like this? If not, how can I get it to print anyway?
Thank you for your time, Tony

On a test print I can see the head moving around and acting like it's printing but the paper is pure white. Not even a drop of ink.
I have tried the cleaning and maintenence on the heads. It acts normal no errors but nothing prints on the paper. It even handles the paper normal also.
Any ideas on this one?

 | Epson C84 by walterob (8/31/05 10:02 AM) | + / - | Do you know of a source for a blowup diagram for this printer? I found a small plastic roller-like piece loose in the bottom of this printer and have no idea where it might re-install. The Epson folks say they do not have access to any such diagram. I see service manuals on CD for other Epsons, but not this one. It is not worth shipping the printer for repair, it would seem. I think if I had a parts diagram I might be able to re-install this part. I believe it fell out when the heads were not parked and the printer body was tilted. I welcome any suggestions.

No really, 58 dollars for an ink set is not bad at all, especially considering each one holds a whole quarter ounce of ink, not much more than a 25c ball point pen.

 | Re: Epson C84 by joyinalaska (9/9/05 3:12 PM) | + / - | we bought a c82 for the office 6/03 and it worked fine until 4/04, when i replaced all ink cartridges and the thing wouldn't print ANYTHING, everything was blank. luckily it was still under warranty, so they shipped us a c84 as a replacement. it has worked so well until now (9/05). the black ink ran out, so i replaced it as i always do. now there is NO black printing. it prints all colors, but there are gaps in the printout and REPEATED nozzle checks and head cleanings did not help. i saw somewhere in this thread that there is a driver utility... i'm not sure where this is, but i would love to try it. i feel that the longer i wait, the less likely i am to get this thing back up and running... something about quick clean, intermediate, and prime... i am not sure how to do this!! but one of the MANY test pages i tried to print had very faint tops of the letters in blackish, so i know it's TRYING.... can anyone show me where/how to run the printer driver cleaning utilities? all i have are the maintenance utilities in the advanced settings under printer properties...
thank you so much! joy

 | Re: Epson C84 by joyinalaska (9/9/05 5:14 PM) | + / - | OK it's me again. i found some very good advice at some of the links listed in this thread... i checked to see if my tube was disconnected and it was not. BUT while i was inside the machine, i found something that was on TOP of the print head/nozzle thing! it was one if the stickers they put inside, it probably said made in china or something but i can't tell anymore because it is covered with black. hence why the black wouldn't print!!! but i KNOW it's a sticker and not a piece of jammed paper because it is still sticky on one side. and this printer has never been used to print on anything other than plain paper. i imagine that this sticker might have been on the print head itself, or the thing with the nozzles on it, AND if i had not seen the advice about only running the cleaning utilities 3 times before running another test job through then i would have been much worse off! before i found this shred, i had started running the utilities over and over, and the nozzle check patterns were slowly deteriorating for the colors and there was still no black. i can see how someone could run their printer into the ground with these!!! well once i took it apart and took out that weirdo sticker thing, the nozzle check pattern was still pretty rough (but it had BLACK!) so i ran a bunch of test jobs through and it slowly got better. then i needed to run the nozzle check 3 times, then a test job, then the head cleaning once and it's GOOD AS NEW (aside from the fact that i have to replace the toner now after all that testing.)
i wonder if this sticker thing has anything to do with it??? now i want to look inside a new one and see if there is some sticker. maybe i'll walk over to best buy just to see.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. i am so very obliged!

 | Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (9/13/05 8:48 PM) | + / - | Hi Walt. Did you ever figure out where the little roller part went? I found the same part in the bottom of the printer after disassembly. I sure would appreciate any help you may have.
|
 | Re: Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (9/13/05 9:52 PM) | + / - | My Epson C84 also stopped printing in black. Placing a new cartridge did not help. The printer is out of warranty and still had the original cartridges in it. Got no useful help from Epson so disassembled it after reading the same numerous complaints here. My tubing was not disconnected. What I did find however, was that the silastic tubing that feeds into the pump roller assembly had collapsed where it is siliconed into the housing to prevent it from being drawn in by the roller pump. I was not able to push air or water through the tubing. I replaced the tubing and re-siliconed the tubing making sure that it was not crimped off. I had trouble finding silastic tubing and salvaged the longest length of the tubing I could. Then I went to the auto parts store and purchased 1/4in tubing and a couple of straight connectors. I spliced in the new tubing before and after the pump roller assembly. With nothing to lose, I ran very warm water over the inkjet cartridge spikes followed by compressed air to lightly blow air in to the spikes. I observed the print head while doing this to confirm that the water and air was getting through. I repeated this process several times to assure that any ink clogs were removed. I thoroughly cleaned the tray with warm water and made sure tubing was clear and open. It now prints perfectly. It certainly is not a fun task to disassemble the printer. Also, there are at least 4 gears that fall out when removing the pump roller assembly. Remove carefully and keep track of where the gears are placed. Todd

I went through two sets of cartridges ... got the fellow at Office Depot totally annoyed with me and here I find that the paper can make a difference. The C84 took a break from printing or so I thought it did... when i began to print some legal briefs on cheap paper. The output was ZERO print any color and the testing did not work either... connected to or independent of the CPU. I was ready to chuck this darn thing out the door... and here I find change the paper. Put in regular 8.5 X 11 bright HP paper and printed the first time and everytime since. Thanks... For the information.

 | Re: Epson C84 by printerrepairpros (9/24/05 5:44 PM) | + / - | The problem is most likely caused by 1) the plastic tube under the cap assembly is disconnected, 2) clogged pump assembly and plastic tube or 3)clogged printhead. Hope this helps.

 | Re: Epson C84 - Double flashing Lights by Lorett (10/12/05 10:46 PM) | + / - | Hi,
I needed to replace my blue cartridge and after doing so the print quality was very low. I did a head cleaning and during that clean the black ran out. I replaced it too. After putting in the black cartridge the printer resumed its usual movements. When it "came back" it was flashing both red lights and won't do anything at all. I tried unplugging it and waiting awhile (as suggested in the Users Guide) but no luck there.
Any suggestions? I did read the post from the other user who had the two red flashing lights after the paper jam butu I did not have a jam....
Thanks!
Lorett
|
 | Re: Epson C84 - Double flashing lights by Lorett (10/13/05 7:59 AM) | + / - | Well, I found that the double flashing meant the ink cartridges weren't seated properly. I managed to get them to go away but the two cartridges (blue and black) that I replaced are not printing at all, regardless of numerous head cleanings.

 | Re: Epson C84 by rob175 (10/18/05 8:13 AM) | + / - | Lets face it....most of the less expensive are just "lost leaders" to sell ink. In fact, IMHO, the printer manufacturers are really INK MANUFACTURERS who make more profit from selling ink than machines.
The upshot is to just throw away a machine that is giving you a problem and buy a new one.
My 2 cents worth

 | Re: Re: Epson C84 by websnail (10/28/05 8:56 AM) | + / - | It's located in the rear back somewhere and slots into a small cylindical groove from what I can remember.

What the heck is happening here??? it recognizes that I have brand new cartridges, it makes the sounds of printing, but when the pages come out, it's BLANK! I cleaned the heads, I did test prints and all those FUN STUFF but my pages are still coming out BLANK, not even an ink residue on them... I also took out the cartridges to make sure they're open and put them back in, still blank! PLease, anyone HELP me before I throw this damn printer out the window!!! Thanks ALL!!!

 | Re: Epson C84 by warnergt (11/2/05 8:49 PM) | + / - | I just fixed an Epson C84. The vacuum hose used to clean the heads was clogged. I poked a wire into it from both ends and blew air through it to clear it out.
Be careful! The residual ink will fly out when you blow air through the tube. It can get all over the place!
|
 | Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (11/3/05 6:20 AM) | + / - | um, I don't know where the vacuum hose is... please explain thanks for your help!
|
 | Re: Re: Epson C84 by warnergt (11/4/05 11:54 AM) | + / - | The Epson C84 has a pump that sucks ink out of the heads to clean them. Once this stops working, the head clog up, the printer stops printing and you cannot clean the heads using the available utilities.
The pump connects with a vacuum tube to the sponge-like base where the printheads park. After the pump, the tube goes into a big felt pad in the back of the printer where waste ink is captured and dries out.
I had a C82 which stopped printing. The vacuum hose had fallen off; it was disconnected. I reconnected the hose and was able to clean the heads and use the printer again. It turns out this is a common problem with the C82.
Recently, I had a C84 which stopped printing. I suspected that this hose, too, had fallen off. I opened up the printer for inspection but the hose was still attached. I attempted to blow air through the hose (this should work) but I could not. The hose was blocked.
I used a piece of wire and poked it up the hose as far as I could from the printhead end to the pump. I was able to extract pieces and blobs of ink. I also poked the wire up the other end of the hose from the felt pad to the pump. Again, I was able to extract chunks of dried ink blobs. Between poking, I attempted to blow air through the tube. After a few rounds of poking and blowing, a big wad of dried ink shot out of the tube (sounds like double entendre, doesn't it?). Watch out for this ink blob! It can make a mess! Afterward, I had to shampoo the carpet where I did this work.
Anyway, I am now able to clean the heads and print. When the heads are being cleaned, you can actually see ink go through this clear vacuum tube.

 | Re: Epson C84 by majuroman (11/11/05 9:25 PM) | + / - | My C84 reached the point of nearly complete black ink blockage which didn't respond to that lovely ink-consuming nozzle cleaning utility, so I wrote to Epson tech support. They told me that the printer shouldn't be left on if you don't print often because it exposes the nozzles to air and dust, and voila clogging. Gee, would have been nice if they wrote that in the user's manual!! But black is the only cartridge that is a problem, which seems a bit odd. Maybe I've got a bad ink cartridge? I've only used Epson cartridges, but at this point I'm starting to wish I'd spent the money on beer.

|
 | Re: Epson C84 by s8472 (11/30/05 8:57 PM) | + / - | I had the same problem with c84 not printing. I used plain old rubbing alcohol. Turn on your printer and let the heads go all the way over to the left of the printer and then unplug the printer while they are over there so you can get access to where the printer assembly normally sits. There is a small pad that seems to suck the ink out of the nozzles when they are being cleaned. I poured some rubbing alcohol into that small rectangular pad and filled it up. Then turned on the printer again. It went thru its usual turning on cycle. And when I looked again all the alcohol had been sucked down out of the pad. I ran a nozzle check and everthing was perfect. I could start printing right away.
|
 | Re: Epson C84 by kirbic (12/15/05 8:01 PM) | + / - | After going thru the same issue as others here with ink cartrige changes actually making things worse, I read s8472's post regarding clogging of the vacuuum hose. I used denatured ethanol and a small straw as a pipette to deliver alcohol to the sponge tray, then ran a head clean. The alcohol remained in the tray, indicating a clogged hose. I used a fine wire with a loop bent into the end, and repeatedly inserted it into the end of the hose. After repeated insertions of the wire, wiping the wire, adding alcohol, repeating... and repeating, the wire seemed to move freely. I reattached the hose, placed some additional alcohol in the sponge tray, and fired up the printer. Viola. Not perfect, but certainly usable. only the occasional skip.

When my Epson C84 printer runs out of ink in one of the color cartridges, it won't let me print anything without changing that cartridge, even if what i'm printing is black and white and doesn't need that particular color. Is this supposed to be like this? If not, how can I get it to print anyway?
Thank you for your time,

|
 | Re: Epson C84 by hpwizard (12/19/05 3:50 PM) | + / - | Jhony, Yes it is supposed to be like this unfortunately. There are various ways to "fool" the printer like cartridge chip resetters & the SSC software but the Epsons are prone to drying up printheads if you leave them idle or dry for too long. You could try going to "printer properties" & change it to black only printing but I am pretty sure that once the light goes solid on the printer it needs to be replaced or "reset" You can download the SSC software from: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html It does come in handy for other applications as well. Hope this helps?! Dazz UK

 | Re: Epson C84 by frustratedprinter (1/2/06 11:27 AM) | + / - | I'm having the same blank page problem after replacing all 4 cartridges. I've read all of the suggestions and will attempt to take the thing apart to look for the hose. Do I only have to take the right housing off though? thanks, this site is great.
|
 | Re: Epson C84 by R. Hawkes (1/7/06 2:44 PM) | + / - | As I replaced expended cartridges, that color stopped printing on the test page... with the exception of yellow. I am pretty sure it is not a cartridge problem nor a nozzle problem... which leaves the docking station. I can only see a little bit of the hose and it looks as though it is connected... but can't tell if it is blocked. My suspicion is that over time the pad in the dock, and perhaps the hose, becomes blocked with dried ink... other comments in this thread lead me to that conclusion. Apparently suction in the hose is necessary to get a new cartridge flowing.
What gripes me is that the problem developed not long after the one year warranty expired. I suspect a design flaw but in an exchange of emails Epson has not admitted to this nor even mentioned the dock. They of course want me to take the printer to a repair station; but after spending over 60 bucks for the new cartridges and with no promise that the problem won't re-occur, no thanks.
The flaw I feel is that the printer is not designed to stay on for an extended period of time without the ink drying in the dock and/or the hose... it must be shut off after use so the dock will mate with the nozzles and keep the pad wet and the hose clear. My Epson 870 dye-based printer doesn't have this problem so it must be peculiar to the C84 printer using Epson's pigment-based inks.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Buddy (1/8/06 5:00 PM) | + / - | I have a C84 that was working fine until the black ink ran out. When I changed the cartridge, with a brand new one from Epson, it wouldn't print at all. The paper would go through and the head moved as if printing, but no ink. The printer showed full ink in the cartridge. After running head and nossle cleanings, I now have used a full cartridge of black ink and not had anything print to show for it. I don't know where all the ink went, it's not in the printer and I've checked to see if the hose is connected under the cartridge assembly. Of course, Epson told me to take it and pay to have it serviced, and either wouldn't or COULDN'T tell me anything else that might be helpful. With the cost of ink cartridges and the trouble of having to go somewhere else to print anything, I'm just ready to buy a different printer and say screw Epson!!

 | Re: Epson C84 by Dolly G (1/13/06 10:33 PM) | + / - | Buddy, you are truly a Buddy!
I am having the same problem! My printer had not been in use for a couple months, due to the fact that I was using a new HP tabloid size printer. When I hooked the Epson back up everything started printing red. I replaced the ink cartridges with new ones and now nothing prints at all! It goes through all the motions as if printing but nothing comes out on the paper! Let me know if you find out the solution to this. But it sounds as though you've just about had it, as I have! I have a ton of ink, and was just gonna buy another one. BUT! I used a refill syringe and extracted all the ink and used in my HP cartridges and it worked fine. So no more C84 for me either. I also had the C82 previously and it lasted only about a year. So I've just about had it with Epson.
Sorry you had to go through so much, but also glad I wasn't alone in this predicament!

 | Re: Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (1/14/06 11:08 AM) | + / - | Hey Dolly, I actually got in touch with the Customer Care department of Epson. Basically, the rep said that it would cost more than what the printer is worth to fix it. If I wanted to stay with Epson he could ship me the comparable printer (C88), and offered a $10 dicount and a new ink cartridge. That was something, I guess, but it doesn't mean that the new printer will last longer than a year.

Just a quick note to respond to Jabin - had the same problem. On the C84 you do not have to 'take it' to bits. From the rear look at where the paper feeds. You will see 2 grey rollers. For me pushing the bottom one backwards cured my phantom paper jam problem. Presumably it re-seated it.

 | Re: Re: Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (2/1/06 9:22 PM) | + / - | Epson rep. told me the same thing. It's an offer all good to them and cheap way to keep your mouth shut and also keep you buying their cartridges. Don't take the offer. Buy another brand instead.
Take a look at this.. http://www.amazon.com
It tells you how bad the record C84 has and possibly many other Epson printer models. One of the tech support even told me they were aware of the issue. And Epson is trying hard to keep it from becoming public. While we were talking on the phone, I suggested the Epson customer support rep. to post the clogging problem of certain models on their web site, he of course refused, saying all customers are happy with it. I also told him about the C84 review page on Amazon.com I posted above, he said he wasn't interested.
As long as people keep buying them, they will not correct their way of business. Best way to correct this problem is to hit them where it hurts, don't buy Epson. And speak up more, let people know.

 | Re: Epson C64 by R. Hawkes (2/10/06 8:02 AM) | + / - | Megan-
Read the warnergt entry dated 11/4/05 regarding the C84. I had the same problem with my C84... each color stopped printing in turn as the cartridge was replaced... obviously not a nozzle clog. And the cartridges are genuine Epson. So the problem has to be loss of suction which I would guess is required to prime new cartridges. Once primed they apparently can keep working with little or no suction. At least that is my conclusion from the experience of me and a number of other users.
No, you are not doing anything wrong... Apparently you are just caught up in a design flaw in the Epson ink delivery system for the C-series of printers.

I'll be glad if somebody can write me the answer for this little problem :)

 | Re: Epson C84 by Kelly T (2/20/06 6:05 PM) | + / - | Possible clogging problem?
My C84 is printing blank pages and nozzle checks with major sections missing. However, what seems to be a nozzle check serial number at the top of each nozzle check print comes out in a perfect dark black and the nozzle check print does show some other slight signs of ink.
The main thing that throws me off is the perfect printing of this serial number. It leads me to think that the nozzles are not in fact clogged. Do you all disagree?
Thanks! Excellent resource here.

 | Re: Epson C84 by JoAnnC (3/4/06 9:00 AM) | + / - | My Epson Stylus C84 printer was printing along just fine for the past 15 months. I've replaced the cartridges previously without any problems and have always used genuine Epson DuraBrite cartridges. Yesterday I was printing out a resume. The print quality was OK but not as perfect as I would have liked. The Epson monitor was indicating that it was time for me to change the cartridges on black, cyan and magenta. They were not completely out, just in the warning stage. I decided to go ahead and change them to see if that would improve the print quality. After changing them and running the printer through the usual priming process I tried the print job again. Now all I get is blank pages. Like others have commented, the printer seems to be printing and going through the motions but nothing, not even a shadow is on the paper. I also tried running the cleaning utility to see if that would help. Epson online troubleshooting was useless. I finally called Epson tech support. I was told that since I was out of the warranty period I would have to pay $9.95 for tech support. Reluctantly I agreed and spoke to one of the tech support staff who asked all the usual questions and recommended everything I had already tried. Then he offered to connect me to someone who had some warranty options for me. After waiting for about 5 minutes I was finally connected to a rep who offered me a $30 coupon towards the purchase of another Epson printer from their website. I told her that I thought they could do a little better than that since I had been a loyal Epson customer for 8 years. Miraculously, she then offered to have Epson repair the printer for free. Epson is sending out the documentation and shipping labels. Apparently I will just have to box it up and call FedEx for a pickup. She said that I will have it back 7-10 days after they receive it. I have a feeling that Epson is starting to feel the heat on this particular problem and I would suggest that others with this issue take it up with them if you feel it is worth the initial $9.95 for tech support. I will post the results of this transaction in a few weeks.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Rick0047 (3/6/06 5:44 PM) | + / - | I found what the roller-like thing is. It is the shock absorber for the paper output tray. It sits in a "slot" at the bottom, right, front of the printer, at the right hinge of the paper output tray. (The printer is oriented such that the paper input feed, power cord connector and USB/LPT connector are away form you). The roller thing slides in, to the left, with the flattend protrusion to the left, the tab is up. You will have to rotate the paper output tray to have it engage the flattened protrusion. Once engaged, push the roller-like thing all the way to the left. I, then, scotch taped the open end of the "slot" closed! No more falling out.

We started off with the C84 and now due to Manf. Disc. of their products we are up to the C88- They all have done the same thing stop putting ink on paper, hence we kept replacing from C84 to C88. NO MORE!!! We will be BETA TESTING(for us not for the Manufactor) an OKI laser jet B/W Printer (price around 155.) And if we have no problems with it we will replace all our Epsons. If I and my Engineer have any influnce we will not buy EPSON again.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Carol Harwell (3/18/06 1:03 PM) | + / - | I too, am having the same problem after changing the "black ink" cartridge. Acts like it's printing-----but the page is BLANK. I too, tried all the "cleaning ideas" to no avail. I am computer printer challenged so the complicated ideas to solve the problem were too scary to try. I am going to reinstall my Dell printer until I buy one without 4 color cartidges. Wish me luck. P.S. Comsumer Guide gave the Epson printer great reviews as one that prints the most pages for the fewest pennies. That's why I bought it. Oops, still more information. In 1997 I bought a small Lexmark printer that was a "jewel. It printed hundreds of pages on draft. When I needed colored ink I switched cartridges and placed the black one in a little plastic holder. I gave it to the grandkids and they won't give it back!!! That proves what others are saying about the quality of printers today-----they are cheap and are called "ink hogs."

 | Re: Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (3/24/06 6:29 AM) | + / - | It's probably clogged heads, and these printers are very sensitive about running low on ink. Seems like the heads clog with dried ink, and it's a factory fix to get when this happens. Also if you don't run a routine cleaning cycle anytime you are experiencing streaking, they will clog up on you. For having been touted as an "economical" printer, this thing drinks ink, and you are forever finding yourself buying ink cartridges and if any one of them runs low, the thing refuses to print at all. My solution: Get a good HP printer and can this piece of trash. I have a five year old HP CS-895 printer which runs circles around the Epson. I runs forever on an ink cartridge too, and is very tolerant of letting you refill your own cartridges. That's something I never did with the Epson. Apparently, this series of printer is considered in the "throwaway" price range. They work well for about a year or so, and that's it. Reward yourself with a new mid-price HP photo or all in one printer. You won't regret it.

 | Re: Epson C84 by bear112849 (3/24/06 3:21 PM) | + / - | Well...sounds like I have a problem like several of you. I have the C84 and have been happy with it. I just recently had to replace two cartridges, the Magenta and the yellow. Now, when printing, only the black and cyan ink works. I have spoken with the company where I bought the cartridges. They seem to feel that it could be a problem with part of the printhead.
I have run the cleaning tests, as described in my manual. The magenta and yellow do not show up. And there are gaps in the lines. I have used these cartridges before and have had no problem.
I also went ahead and replaced the magenta since I had an extra one, but it didn't make any difference. Any advice?

Not the first I did this, but when I changed it, it turned off the power, when I put the new cartridge in. So, did I screw it up by turning the power off. I would like to know if this is a problem and can be fixed before I tear it apart to check the hoses.

 | Re: Epson C84 by lever (3/30/06 10:09 PM) | + / - | I just cleaned out my Epson C84 as well. The tube from the cleaning tray on back. Not too hard to do, you need snap off the right side of the printer to access the entire thing. Washed off the head cleaning tray. What is too bad is that I've tried so many print jobs, the printer thinks my black ink is used up. Color ink is low. Gee, should I spend $50 on new cartridges or just buy a new (non-Epson printer). Option two, I think.

i have half a dozen here that scan great, but won't print, are they doomed??? needinkr

 | Re: Epson C84 by squidgurl (4/7/06 3:42 PM) | + / - | Hi, I have read the threads about people with C84s getting clogged, and I'm feeling a bit of solidarity here. I'm pretty sure mine did the same thing. My black ink was low and printing with streaks like the heads needed cleaning. I ran the self-cleaning function, no luck. Still got gaps/streaks. I replaced the black cartridge with a new one and now the black and blue ink won't print at all. I noticed, however, inside the shell/housing that there is some black ink spattered, making me think the hose blew off. I have decided to remove the housing, see what's up and re-attach the hose if that's the case, except one problem ... I can't get it off. I know it snaps and unsnap, but I have a heck of a time and don't want to break the plastic. Do I need to remove both left and right, or just the right? And what's the trick to this?
Thanks in advance.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (4/7/06 5:14 PM) | + / - | The C84 does suffer from the ink purge disconnection problem. Most of the time it's just a simple clog. You can get this kit http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson/K89 and clean the print head.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (4/8/06 5:16 AM) | + / - | Thanks. I neglected to add that ever since the black and blue ink stopped printing, the printer makes this weird clicking sound now, which makes me think there's a loose part in there somewhere and that the printer needs to be cracked open.
Can you get clicking sounds from a clog?
|
 | Removing housing from an Epson Stylus C84 by squidgurl (4/9/06 6:44 AM) | + / - | What is the trick to this? I know everything is supposed to unsnap, but I've already wasted an afternoon trying to get the thing open without breaking it.
I'm certain I have clogs that prevent my printer from printing, and plan to order the necessary cleaning agent ONLY if I can get the housing off and determine if the printer is worth salvaging.
The reason why I want to open it? My printer now makes this strange clicking sound when it goes through the motions of printing, making me think there's a loose part somewhere, thus the need to crack it open.
I have downloaded the manual, and the website that shows you how to replace the hose, and all sorts of info and the points where the printer is supposed to unsnap. Still, I'm getting nowhere because I can't open it up.
Thanks.

 | Re: Epson C84 - That Little Roller Part by WaveGuide (4/11/06 12:11 PM) | + / - | OK, I've seen several people asking about a 'little roller part' that often appears on the tabletop after you've stripped down an Epson C series printer. Here's a picture someone posted earlier: http://www.punkjob.com/IMG_0969s.jpg Well it's part of the sheet receiving tray hinge. The right hand side hinge incorporates this little gizmo. It's held in place by the RHS case moulding. When you unclip the case and move the chassis, this piece slips out of its holder and mysteriously appears on the table or maybe in the bottom of the printer if you shook it in.
It appears to be a clutch fitting to prevent the paper tray slamming down when you open it. Leaving this roller out has no significant effect on the printer.
Hope this helps.

 | Re: Removing housing from an Epson Stylus C84 by WaveGuide (4/11/06 12:43 PM) | + / - | The end pieces are held in place by internal and external latch-like devices, built into the end pieces and the main case.
On the RHS, there are two obvious clips on the underside of the case. There's another latch right by the sheet feeder. It's that small rectangular gizmo in the main casing. This releases by pressing down the 'hook' and spreading the case joint apart with a thin blade.
There are two more latches on the inside. You have to move the ink carrige to the LHS to allow access. These can be released by getting a fingernail under the flat clasp which holds a protrusion on the end case. Force them away from the casing. Best look into the case with a torch to check out how they lie. Both are in the upper part of the end casing, but difficult to spot at first.
The left end case has similar fasteners. Two inside at the upper end, access to which requires carriage moving to RHS. Use figers as before. There's one obvious clasp on the base and another 'rectagular' area alongside it by the rubber foot. This also requires a thin blade and brute force to separate the case parts. There's another one outside near the sheet feeder as per RHS. Before starting LHS, first remove moulding around parallel/USB sockets. Do this by feeding a slim blade into slot in base so you release spring catch holding the little moulding. Easier to do than describe.
WATCH OUT for the little roller gizmo - here it is: http://www.punkjob.com/IMG_0969s.jpg which drops out from the RHS sheet tray hinge. Many people baffled when this part appears on table. RHS end case holds it in its housing. It's just a clutch to improve feel of tray and non-essential.
Don't bother trying to remove the black decor panels at each end. Leave these fixed to the end cases. The 'manuals' recommended here and elsewhere imply these decor panels are part of the dismantling but they're not.
If anyone needs further dismantling help, just ask.
As for these 'manuals' - does anyone have an 'English' translation? They are are virtually indecipherable in parts and are not very useful unless you're a trained Epson tech.
My ten cents. Cheers, WaveGuide

 | Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (4/11/06 7:26 PM) | + / - | Thanks for the valuable information. I'll give it another go this weekend. Too bad those black decor panels aren't critical to dismantling the housing. Those were the only things I COULD remove!!!
I'm a sucker, but I placed a bid on eBay for another Epson Stylus C 84 ... not because I love them, but because I have all this ink that I don't want to go to waste. It's cheaper to do that than to buy a new printer and new, expensive ink. Maybe with the clog cleaning kit, I can keep things at bay.
I keep hearing about this Epson Loyalty program, but have yet to find anymore information about this. I've had my printer for over two years, and have used it occasionally during the past year or so before it broke after replacing the black cartridge last week. Still, the clicking in the printer mystifies me. When I took out the other cartridges and put them back in after tinkering around ... guess what? Now they don't print either. My machine shoots out blanks and now clicks.
Meanwhile, look on eBay. There are many used Epsons ... many of them sold for parts or "as is" because one of the inks won't print anymore. Go figure!

 | Re: Re: Epson C84 by WaveGuide (4/12/06 9:48 AM) | + / - | I'm in the same situation. Spent a lot on Epson C84 stuff/refillable carts/CIS system/etc so now I'm committed to them (C64/C84/C86) for a while. Have risked buying three C84s from eBay and each one has a blocked up printhead due to Durabrite ink drying out. I'm hoping this wonder solvent from FixYourOwnPrinter will do the trick with them. Meanwhile, stripping down these printers is good education and I'll soon be an 'expert' in breaking down the later C series.
The furthest I've been into one is to get at the waste ink pads. These are shaped to fit the 'sump' created in the baseplate of the chassis and the very devil to get out without damage. Found mine contained maybe 100 mls of waste ink, perhaps 90% of the carts I've used. How rediculous! My ongoing purpose is to figure out the optimum way of running the Epson C-series with minimal wastage.
Keeping the printer powered up at all times is the singular best way to reduce running costs. This is because it doesn't go through the stupid ink wasting routine at each usage.

I have poured through the Internet and can't find anything about Epson having a loyalty program for clogged up/busted C84s. I'm starting to wonder if this is some kind of urban legend.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (4/26/06 7:58 AM) | + / - | No, Herb...the C84 will not be fooled. It's a racket...AND you must purchase new color ink cartridges even if you only print with black. Even if you set your computer to the "Black only" setting, the colored ink somehow gets used up and must be replaced if you want the printer to function. Even if you do everything right, I have had major problems with this model and won't buy it again.
|
 | Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (4/26/06 8:57 AM) | + / - | Yeah, It's all a scam. Because inkjet printers use composite colors and black. So pure black uses black ink but lighter blacks and grays and all other colors/shades are a mix from the other 3 ink cartridges.
What a racket they have going there. And they use individual ink cartridges so it you run out of a single color you have to replace just that cartridge. I liked the old 3 color cartridges where you had to replace the whole 3 color cartridge if you ran out of just one color.
I have a great idea. Don't buy inkjet printers. Get laser printers. But wait thet also use composite colors. So I guess your only option is don't use printers at all.

 | Re: Epson C84 by ziddey (5/25/06 6:11 PM) | + / - | Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. I made a bit of a goof the other day. Basically, I had my printer on a very flimsy endtable, and everytime it printed, the movement of the cartridges would swing the entire printer and table. So I moved it onto another surface and left it there. Then the next day I decided to buy all new ink cartridges for the printer. I put them in and just did a performance/maintenance procedure of doing a quick head cleaning and alignment. But something wasn't right. It seemed like the blue was streaking. I did the head cleaning another time but it didn't help still.
I just realized what the problem was now after I had already begun attempts to fix a problem that wasn't there. It was because the table I later put the printer on was slanted back, and I think the blue dot (at least for head cleaning) is up front. And maybe as a result, the cleaning sponge was dry at the top and now the print head is dried up? Does this sound possible / likely?
But anyway, I did do an attempt to fix the problem but only made it much much worse.
I started taking apart the printer until I found the large vacuum tube going towards the back where the foam padding is. Then I traced it and managed to pull out the cleaning module. I disconnected the tubes. I blew through the small rigid tube until I blew out almost all the ink through the sponge. I then tried to blow the large hose from end to end. Here's my first question. I see that in the middle it goes through the vacuum pump, I'm assuming. Am I supposed to be able to blow through that and to the other end? Or is the vacuum pump not operating supposed to make it so I couldn't blow through? I had a syringe and tried to inject some alcohol into each end of the hoses. Then I put it back together and soaked the cleaning dot tray as well as the sponge next to it with alcohol.
I don't have the side gray covers installed right now nor the top dark gray cover. But I started doing my testing. At one stage of what the printer routine is, it makes a loud noise that it didn't do before. It's coming from roughly the area of / behind the cleaning module. What could be causing this? I checked the gears and they seem fine. Also the pulley on the left is fine.
Regardless I ran a few cleanings but now it's so so so much worse than before. I even took a paper towel and tried to dry off all the alcohol. Before, only the blue wasn't working right. Now none of them are working, and not only that, all of them are worse than the blue was.
I then installed the SSC Service Utility and ran the powerful cleaning once. And it didn't help it seems. And now when I look at my ink levels, they're at about 50% already!! I haven't even printed anything new with these cartridges yet. Pretty much half the money on these new inks down the drain already??
And what can I do to save the printer?? Help!!

 | Re: Epson C84 by JoAnnC (5/28/06 3:08 PM) | + / - | I am very happy to report that Epson did come through with a new printer for me as promised. In fact they sent me a C88 instead of another C84 and even included new ink cartridges. There was no additional cost for the upgrade nor for shipping in either direction. I was very impressed with the turnaround time as well. I received my printer within a week of sending out the old one. The new printer is more than satisfactory and hopefully will not have the same issues as the C84 when it comes time to change the cartridges.

 | Re: Epson C84 by Dookus (5/28/06 5:04 PM) | + / - | Finding this site sure helped me repair my problem with a Epson C84. Seems like it is a common problem: Everything works but not printing...every sheet white. I read several fixes, but the one I keyed in on was to clean out the ink waste tube to the waste resevoir. I removed all the plastic(both ends and top), which is easy if carefully done (look for hidden tabs). Now the frame and componets are easy to see and clean. I readily found the hose connection mount below the front of the head/ink cart assembly. I followed it to the back and found it was clogged tight with ink. The hose is ran under the head assembly to the rear waste resevoir and I decided not to remove it and get a headache trying to route it back into position. So, I removed the white/clear hose from the top of the coupler, leaving the small black hose that goes to the ink head pad connected to the bottom(this will not dry out the ink). I then carefully pulled out the other end of the white/clear hose from under the felt absorbant material in the waste well, located at the lower rear of the machine(removed the front felt and cleaned the front of the resevoir out with alcohol and QTips). I used a hyperdermic needle and rubbing alcohol to flush out the white/clear hose from the rear, leaving the hose in place in the machine. I wedged toliet paper for absorbsion under the front end of the hose to catch fluids as I injected rubbing alcohol into the rear end with the hyperdermic needle, and blowing through it to clear it. I kept this up until the hose was clear again. Not quite satisfied that the machine was unclogged I plugged it into power and turned in on and everything fired right up, so I pushed the red flashing button which moved the head to the center, off of the pad platform and found a lot of ink goo build-up and some sort of paper-like debris. I had plenty of time to clean that away with QTips/Alcohol. Turned off power, head returned to it's station correctly (watch out here that you haven't tripped the head seating mechanism), removed power cord, and reassembled plastic coverings. Works great.

 | Re: Epson C84 by moe (5/28/06 9:09 PM) | + / - | Again with the alcohol! It's the water content of the alcohol that dissolves the ink, not the alcohol!! Sheesh! Well at least you didn't use acetone or brake fluid.

 | Re: Epson C84 by JGawne (10/4/06 10:37 PM) | + / - | Thanks to all who have posted answers to the problem -- I too just replaced all my cartridges and cannot print.
I e-mailed EPSON, they sent me a reply about cleaning the heads, etc. I called, and the person suggested that I replace my ink cartridges again (idiot).
I have tried printing on both sides of the paper, and in both directions. No luck
I'm going to dis-assemble this junk pile and try to clean it. I'm also going to find an old HP color printer with refillable cartridges. I had a Lexmark that lasted 7 years until it died. This EPSON C84 is 14 months old.
I'll let you know how it goes

 | Re: Re: Epson C84 by Anonymous (11/20/06 3:04 AM) | + / - | We took apart our c84, as the IT department would not sort it out. Don't recommend yanking stuff to get it to come off. Anyway, we're gonna get a proper make of printer this time round.

 | Re: Epson C84 by hyoleehubbie (12/9/06 2:15 PM) | + / - | Hi,
I just unclogged my 2 year old C84 yesterday. It was also the flush tube that was clogged. I think Epson's Durabrite ink will clog once it mixes with non-Epson ink.
I found out there is a way to run the flush tube out of the printer housing, instead of into the flush tray with the absorbers. There already is a small slit in the dark grey "stacker assembly" through which the tube can fit. I made a small opening in the left rear side of the grey/silver cap for the end of the flush tube to come out. I put an old wine bottle against the side of the desk to catch the excretions. The old desk got stained a bit though as I was experimenting. I hope next time the tube is clogged again I can clear it without taking apart the printer.
BTW, I also found that a diluted Simple Green solution is pretty good at softening the ink.
Good luck!

 | Re: Re: Epson C84 by AWeir (12/30/06 3:36 PM) | + / - | So how did the disassembly go? My 3 1/2 years old C84 is doing everything everyone else described (parts moving, but only a little magenta coming out despite full ink cartridges), and cleaning did nothing. Would figure that the printer would go out when I most need it and in between jobs. I guess I have nothing to lose by taking my trusty screwdriver to the thing...
