Epson c42 jam

Epson c42 jam by Dave-G (3/29/04 4:47 PM) reply + / -
Hi.
My stylus c42 jams the paper every time I try to print & the red light comes on & stays on till I turn off the printer.
It's pretty noisy & tends to bang & crash & move jerkily in use, but after reading other peoples reviews of this printer this seems a common problem with the c42.
The printer has had hardly any use so it shouldn't be worn out.
Thanks for any advice Dave G.

Dave: I would first suggest simply cleaning and lubricating the Carriage Assembly, as that area causes the most problems when noise and rough movements are involved. PROBLEMS: Although it's possible your printer has an electronic or mechanical failure, it is more likely the Carriage Assembly is simply DIRTY and or DRY, causing it to stick and make noises. That usually results in the printer loosing track of just where the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly is actually at. It then keeps telling that assembly to keep moving and can even cause it to slam into the end of the printer, when it gets real dirty and dry. That slamming can also result in the printers Printhead Alignment being thrown off. Try wiping the bar, all around the round shaft, with a lint free cloth. Also clean the outside of the metal bushings with Q-Tips, that the carriage bar passes thru, on both sides of the holder assembly. You can also use alchol on the cloth, if there is a lot of build-up on the carriage shaft/bar. Then lube the metal bar on both sides of the holder assembly, slightly with a precision oiler, not a spray lubrication. A drop or two of a Teflon based lubrication or Tri-Flo lube is best. Manually slide the holder assembly back and forth to spread out the lubrication and wipe of any excess lube or blackish build-up that appears on the bar...Look for an e-mail message from me with more in-depth information, that might help you in that area...Good Luck! Denny Conway...P.S. You can check out this link, supplied by WES, to see different lubrications: http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/oil.html

Thanks for your reply Denny.

I've cleaned the carriage tracks then lightly lubed them with a silicone based fluid but the paper still jams every time I attempt to print.
Although using the nozzle check utility it printed without any problems, the paper didn't jam & it printed the coloured bars ok.
I'll try your more indepth cleaning routine tommorrow & see if that helps.

Thanks Dave G.

Hi Denny.
I tried the printer again & found that it prints ok if I set the "printing preferences" to quality, or the middle setting between quality & speed.
I normally print on the speed setting, but it's this setting that jams the paper every time.
Thanks Dave G.

Dave: Just to be on the safe side, you might want to also delete and remove your old printer drivers and then go on-line to Epson and download new drivers. Sometimes the old drivers can become corrupted and that can cause strange problems. Simply click-on the following link and read the information, make your choices and follow the prompts: www.epson.com ...A very common problem with paper feeding problems or paper jamming, is STATIC ELECTRICITY in the paper itself. All new paper in the ream has static in it, that has to be removed by fanning the paper prior to installing into the printer. Paper is like a magnet for static electricity and any static in the air is attracted to the paper loaded in your printer. Even though you may have correctly FANNED the new paper you installed, it can still cause problems in feeding after several days. Static in the air is especially bad on windy days, stormy days, during electrical storms and even during the summer during high heat. Static can also come from other electrical equipment near the paper in the printer, or because the printer is located next to DOORS and WINDOWS that may be open, or opened often. In high static times you may have to refan the paper in the paper tray several times before you use it all up. Some grades of papers are even worse and can cause pages to stick together because of the way the paper is made, cut or finished. Try taking the paper out of the paper tray and with at least a 1/2 to 3/4 inch stack, refan all four edges and see if the paper stops the feeding or jamming problems. If that does not work, just simply try turning the paper over. Some brands of paper are only finished on one side and the other side is slicker. You can even try a different type/brand of paper [trade with a friend]...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Thanks for all your help Denny, the printer has been ok the last couple of days & is now a lot quieter since I cleaned it.
It still doesn't work on the speed setting, new drivers & paper change made no difference.
But I can live with that I just leave it on the default setting between speed & quality & it's fine.
Thanks again, cya later, Dave G.
