Bola: It sounds like you may actually have a Service Error Condition. To be able to know for sure, I need to know just which Lights/Led's on your printer are are on SOLID, which ones are FLASHING/BLINKING, or which ones are just simply OFF. Reply back on this Printer Repair Site and let me know your printers exact light pattern and I'll try to help you further, if I can...Denny Conway

Re: epson 1290 by Denny Conway (3/11/04 4:08 PM) reply + / -
Bola: I checked thru my Epson America listings and the available Epson UK Service Manuals that I have and unfortunatly, there is no listing for a "1290" model. There are listings for 1200, 1270 & 1280 models, so I checked on the closest available model the 1280. A SOLID Red Error Indicator only, represents a "Paper Out Condition" [paper fails to load correctly], a "Paper Jam Condition" [printer fails to eject a possible paper jam within a specified number of paper feed steps at power-on, or printer thinks there is a constant paper jam condition], or a Double Feed Error [more than one piece of paper is fed-in at the same time, normally in a shingle feed pattern where the first piece of paper picks up a second piece after the first piece has already partially fed in]...QUESTIONS: If you turn the printer off and back on, will it go to a normal Ready Condition, with just the Green Power Light on, or do you get an immediate SOLID Red Error Light? Have you recently had to remove any bad jams by forcefully pulling them out of the printer, especially towards the rear of the printer, in a backwards direction? Are there any strange GRINDING or RATCHETING type noises happening when the printer is trying to print out a piece of paper? Do you FAN the paper before you place it into the paper tray, to relese the static electricity thats naturally in a new ream of paper? Have you tried actually refanning the paper to see if it helps? Have you tried turning the paper over to see if it helps? Some paper is only finished on one side and the other side is actually smoother/slicker. Have you tried a different brand or type of paper? Possibly borrow or trade some with a friend...TRY THIS SIMPLE TEST WITH THE "PRINTER CABLE" REMOVED FROM YOUR PRINTER AND AFTER REFANNING THE PAPER YOU ARE USING: First turn the printer off for about 10 seconds and then back on, to clear any DATA from when your printer was previously connected to your Computer System. If the printer goes to a normal ready condition, push in on the Paper Button [with paper loaded as normal] one time. Did a single sheet of paper feed-in part way, with no red error light coming on? During this test, its normal for the paper to only feed in part way and stop, but no red error light should come on. If the paper fed-in and stopped with no red light coming on, then push in on that paper button a second time and see if the paper continues to feed through the printer and out onto the paper exit tray, also with no red error light coming on. Reply back and let me know how that paper feed test went and also answer my other questions...Denny Conway

Re: epson 1290 by Anonymous (3/12/04 9:17 AM) reply + / -
thanx again 4 helping

ok some background first
i just got this pinter back from a "friend" who borrowed it (silly me )
he gave it back with new ink cart he bought as we had allready agreed.
and to b honest i didnt even connect it back to my pc for several weeks, but now i have it just wont work..so of course i dont realy know if it has had a paper jam bruitaly cleared ...the 1290 look very like a 1270 i think at least externaly anyway
ok to answear your questions
turning it off and on clears the error and it starts in normall ready mode but ejects any paper partualy loaded due to any previous errors.

unfortunatly i dont know about any jams

i guess it does sound a little like its grinding though realy this is barely noticeable.

ive tried all the sugestions with paper

doing the test u metioned ...
the paper loads part way with no problems and no error light...however the second push of the button produces the error .....turning it off and on again clears the error and eject the paper ...

and plz excuse my bad speling ..

Re: epson 1290 by Denny Conway (3/12/04 10:31 AM) reply + / -
Bola: Because of the problem with your printer not being able to complete the paper feeding test, I would have to guess that there may be a problem in the paper feed path area. There may even be a problem with the actual Paper Jam Sensor Assembly, but no way to really know for sure. FIRST STEP: I would suggest simply cleaning and lubing the Carriage Assembly, just to eliminate the possibility of a DRY and or DIRTY Carriage Assembly causing possible problems and errors. SECOND STEP: I do not know if your "1290" has an actual plastic [almost see-threw] "Encoder Strip/Sensor Strip" on it, but the "1270" does and a dirty sensor strip can cause many different problems and you may want to gently and carefully clean it, just in case. Check for a couple of e-mails from me, with some additional information on those two areas... Although there is not an actual "1290" Service Manual available to download from Epson Company, there is a "1270" Service Manual available to download from the Epson UK web-site at " http://www.epson.co.uk/repair/inkjet.htm " and you may be able to use it as a reference for your "12390" model. There is a Parts Diagram available to look at for a "1270" from Compass Micro Company, at " http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm ". Simply scroll thru the box that says SELECT A MODEL, until you come to the "Stylus Photo 1270" and then click on it. Under the STYLUS PHOTO 1270 heading, simply click-on EXPLODED DIAGRAM on that page, to see an actual parts diagram of the 1270 model...Just in case neither of those two areas help with your printers problem, I am also e-mailing you some information on possible problems with the Paper Jam sensor Assembly...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

ok so far i cleaned the carrage, it was covered with thick greese, that in itself is somwhat worrying ........... the sensor strip looks clean so i have left it alone at the moment i am trying to identify the paper jam sensor this link seems to b redirected now http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/900pf.html

Re: epson 1290 by bola (3/14/04 5:28 AM) reply + / -
ok well i aint heard from Rich yet so ive investigated futher and i think ihave sused out what the paper jam sensor is . no mention of it in the diagrams as far as i can c . anyway that looks ok to me seems to b sprung and i realy cant c nothing wrong with it ...
so i dunno what ellse to try now

Here is a link for the 1270 paper feed feed system (it's the closest to the 1290 I can find) that shows the paper feed system and some diagnostinc info. It might be of some use to you.

Re: epson 1290 by Wes (3/15/04 11:30 AM) reply + / -
Maybe the printer just wanted to go for a ride :)

The problem with the epsonhelp site is the host. The site is going to be moved to a new host soon.

I just need to know if the other host is going to be any better.

I'm glad to hear your printer is back in action again.

Re: epson 1290 by Barry (4/5/04 10:12 AM) reply + / -
I'm getting black lines from a dirty carrage or the small rollers. How do i clean them, any suggestions.

Re: epson 1290 by Denny Conway (4/5/04 10:19 AM) reply + / -
Barry: That particular problem is normally caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair that sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side and backside areas of the Printhead Assembly. That build-up acts like a small paint brush and transfers wet ink to those small rollers. Those small rollers then act like tiny paint rollers and roll the wet ink onto the paper as it passes below those rollers. Once those two areas are thoughly cleaned and then the small rollers are also cleaned, the problem will normally go away. Check for a couple of e-mails from me that should help in that area...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson 1290 by Anonymous (5/14/04 6:35 PM) reply + / -
My 1290 has just started this.
When i print it prints text etc as normal but covers over that area with black ink as well as blocks of colour (even when its just set on black!)
I left it for a couple on days and it worked—once, then back to the blocks of mucky colour etc

Re: epson 1290 by Wes (5/14/04 9:18 PM) reply + / -
It could be dried ink on the face of the print head. You can use a damop paper towel and place it in the path of theprint head and pass the carriage over the paper towel until you get little or no ink on the paper towel.

For more info try this link http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/phface.html

I hope this helps.

Re: epson 1290 by Roly (6/4/04 9:29 PM) reply + / -
I am getting exactly the same as "anonymous".
Took it to the service centre and it printed perfectly!! Brought it home to the G4 perfect for about 10 prints and then the same blocks of colour and black smudged everywhere. Reloaded printer drivers in the Mac----same result.Switched it to a PC --same result. I'm gonna do the head cleanex thing and will post back.

Very upset by my 1290, at start-up the two lights flash alternatively
red-green. The printer does'nt work at all. Even while pressing the
orange button, the carriage does'nt move at all !!!! PLEASE HELP !!!

(The standard reset procedure did not solve the probleme)

Thanks in advance, Michel from Switzerland

Re: epson 1290 by Denny Conway (7/9/04 9:36 AM) reply + / -
Michel: Because I work in the USA and your "1290" was made for sales outside the USA, I don't actually have a Service Manual to refer to. From what I have been told the "Epson Stylus Photo 1280" is the same basic model that was made here in the USA. A Service Error where all LED's/Lights are alternatly blinking on a "1280", is normally a Maintenance Request Error. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and normally your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water, then dry them out and simply reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...THIS ADDITIONAL INFO POSTED BY "WES" MIGHT HELP: Wes 12/07/2003 13:57:30 To see what's involved in servicing the waste ink pads try this http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/wip.html ...[or]...Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...HERE'S SOME INFORMATION POSTED FROM OTHER PEOPLE, THAT MAY HELP YOU TRY TO LOCATE A SERVICE MANUAL OR A RESET PROCEDURE, IF YOU NEED ONE: "Master 10/05/2002 03:22:56 Re: Epson stylus adjustment programs. You can find any service manual or service adjustment program for EPSON inkjet printers at www.otd.com.ua "...[OR]..."Eva 2/14/2003 23:31:11 Re: Epson Color Stylus Error Codes. See http://www.2MANUALS.COM - they have all service manuals and service programs. Due to them I fixed the same error on me C20! They are friendly!" ....Good Luck! Denny Conway

is this site 2manuals.com legitimate? It sends me messages that its certificate is changed and it might be intercepted. I tried to download a 1290 manual and it refused to honor my perfectly good credit card. It fails to respond to e-mails beyond an automated reply. The problem still exists on my printer and I need a manual. I also am looking for a print head as I almost certainly need another after failing to clean it properly. Where can I get one?

Re: epson 1290 by Denny Conway (8/3/04 11:33 AM) reply + / -
Gerry: I've only heard good things about that "2manuals.com" web-site and we recommend it many times a day. I'm sorry, I cannot tell you why you are having problems. When I tried several times to just open up that web-site, it failed and I got a message saying "The Web site cannot be found. The Web site you are looking for is unavailable due to its identification configuration settings". I don't know whats going on with that site at the moment. Heres a couple of different links you can try for Service Manuals: http//www.sm.copyprofi.net/index.htm , or http//www.findmanual.net/index.htm ...AS FAR AS NEEDING PARTS: For Exploded Diagrams of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and or possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, go to " http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm ". While your at the Compass Micro site, you might want to check with them and see if they have a Service Manual for your "1290" available. Several people have posted that they have manuals available for newer printers, that are not actually available from 2manuals.com ...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson 1290 by gerry freed (8/3/04 11:47 AM) reply + / -
many thanks for your quick reply. Compass looks impressive but they do not seem willing to ship to where I currently live, ie France. The French agent network is most unwilling to supply to individuals.
There are definite disadvantages in moving countries. I bought my printer in the UK, then moved to Australia with it and have now retired here. In spite of the IT industry promoting the global nature of their offerings and the Internet, once you move you are on your own for service.

Re: epson 1290 by Denny Conway (8/3/04 2:15 PM) reply + / -
Gerry: Have you actually tried going thru the Epson Australia Web-Site, to see if they are able to help, or possibly recommend where you can find a dealor in your area that you can order parts from? There's an "Epson Australia Contact Support/Service" web-site, located at http://tech.epson.com.au/contact/contact.asp , but I don't know how much help they can actually provide...Denny Conway

Re: epson 1290 by DAVID U.K. (8/3/04 3:08 PM) reply + / -
I am in England, U.K. and I got both the service manual and the adjustment program for the Epson 1290 from 2manuals.com just 3 weeks ago on a single CD. When I ordered and paid by credit card on the Friday evening U.K. time, I had no problems in connecting and ordering. I did receive an automated email shortly afterwards saying the item had been shipped. This was corrected in a follow up email on the Monday from “JOHN” saying it would be sent that day. That email seemed very, very “human”. The CD (CDR) came on the Friday of the following week making it JUST ELEVEN DAYS “door to door”. The only rather strange thing about the order is that the envelope with the CD in it came from UKRAINE, YES, UKRAINE. That is as in “former Soviet Bloc”. The envelope label has both Russian and English postal and customs information on it. VERY STRANGE. “BUT” although I have not attempted to use the adjustment program yet, the service manual is definitely the real thing. Most useful and interesting.
I have clicked in to 2manuals.com after reading your post above and yes, there is something rather odd about it. Maybe time to check my credit card’s “uses” over the past few weeks!!!!
Now Gerry, you say that the Epson guys in France are not willing to supply parts. WHAT THE HELL IS THE “”E.U.”” SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT? I thought we had something about freedom to trade and all that kind of stuff in the E.U. treaties. As a last resort you could threaten the suppliers with “the chop”!! I am looking to find a source for 1290 parts and notice that Compassmicro do not supply outside of “The Americas”. Such a shame. Iwould like to add that the CD from 2manuals.com is, as you may have gathered from “CDR”, A COPY!! As you are not that far away from me, “only” in France, I would like you to contact me so we may exchange a few “ideas”.

Re: epson 1290 by gerry freed (8/3/04 10:39 PM) reply + / -
Thanks Denny, but they will only respond to Australian residents. I now live in France and have tried the local site only to be referred to two agents in Bordeaux who do not look as if they would supply parts willingly. Anyway without a manual, I do not feel confident about setting it up again. I have bough a new 1290S in France and it has other problems. The T009 cartridges have vanished from the shop shelves, which may be connected with the police discovery of a large bank of 1290's being used to counterfeit Euros.

Re: epson 1290 by Denny Conway (8/18/04 10:29 AM) reply + / -
Anonymous: Unfortunatly, the SSC Service Utility does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems. There is a different adjustment program or utility thats available for free, from www.resetters.com . I have never tried that source myself, but it was recommended by "WES". Just in case that other source does not work: You may actually need to go on-line to try and locate a "RESET PROCEDURE", or even the "SERVICE MANUAL", that you can buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals and or Service Adjustment Programs/Resets for most Epson Printers, from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=2_18 (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 /- ). A second source would be from http://www.sm.copyprofi.net/index.htm [check prices of available Service Manuals]. You can always go to the "Compass Micro Inc" web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm and check with them directly, to see if they have a Service Manual or Reset Procedure available yet for your printer. Several people have posted that they have manuals available for the newer printers, that are not actually available from 2manuals.com ...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I had a paper jam in my Epson stlyus 1290 printer and after removing the jam and cleaning the roller, the printer now won't work.\r\nWhen I switch it on, the head moves back and forth several times, but judders as it moves. It then gets to the left hand side and stops and the red light comes on.
Have I broken it ?
