 | HP Deskjet 890C by Don (2/28/04 7:07 AM) reply | + / - | I have cleaned my deskjet printer. After I follow the procedure for turning the printer back on, I get a dialog box that says "Mechanical Error: This print cartridge cradle cannot move. Please check under cover for a paper jam or other obstruction." There is no paper jam or obstruction as far as I can tell. What is wrong and how can I fix this problem?

You need to manually clean the carriage rod.
Lift cover, cartridges are presented, unplug printer. Now the carriage will move easily.
Clean the silver carriage rod with warm distilled water and a lint free cloth or paper towel. Continue till the cloth comes back clean.
Bert usually recommends the addition of a couple of drops of TriFlow brand lube to the rod and the carriage bushings. Sporting goods stores, bike shops, etc have it in the 2oz bottle.
You may, if you are careful, also clean that mylar strip...just water and a light touch with a bit of cloth beteween your fingers. Do not tug and pull as it will come off it's mountings.
Incidently, that case cover should be removable via 2 Torx screws and 4 corner clips. Then you may also easily clean the parking area. Again: water....no alcohol, etc.
