HP 6122s on XP

HP 6122s on XP by Bill Knight (2/23/04 12:00 PM) reply + / -
I have an office with 3 HP 6122's hooked to three different Dell GX270's. These are new printers and newly received computers, and are free of anything but the operating system, Office, and a few other programs.
Here's the problem. None of the 6122's will print reliably. They either sit and do nothing, or print once in a great while. They are all USB connected, although today I wiped out the drivers on one and then installed it on the parallel port. No good. When printing a test page, it spools "75.4 KB/192 KB" (opening the pending documents icon and looking in the 'size' column) and stops there. Canceling the print just gets a "deleting" message and does nothing else. I have to restart Windows and/or turn off the printer just to get rid of the pending document.
I figure it has to be something with the Dells or with the 6122's themselves, as I don't think XP is to blame. Given my experience with HP, however, I tend to blame them more. The online tech I spoke with just sort of "disappeared" half way through our session once the problem was explained and his canned replies didn't solve anything. Anyone have suggestions? The drivers are the most updated and have been reinstalled/deleted/reinstalled ad-naseum. Each printer gives out a different error code when using the button codes (the ones on the front).

There are very few questions on this forum concerning the DJ 6122, so my assumption is that they are generally solid. The odds seem high that you would get three that are defective. I share your frustration when talking with offshore techs that know nothing but what they read off of their computers. Perhaps HP will wise up if they get enough complaints.

I suggest that you call Dell. If there is some kind of quirk with their equipment and the DJ 6122, surely they have heard of it.

You may well want to talk to Dell. I have a customer that bought a Gateway computer about 1 year ago. He was told his 600 series HP fax wouldn't work on XP. So they sold him a K60 all in one machine..which didn't work at all. customer calls me I go out and after several hours with the office jet division of HP, and Gateway tech support( actual tech I was impressed) we found that there was a problem with the chipset in the Gateway that was preventing the machine from performing.
So you might give Dell a call, as well as giving another try to HP, and ask that your case be escalated to the next level, not the first person you speak with.

Good Luck!!
