If you are getting spillage or nearly so, the spittoon should be cleaned out. You may be able to wick out most of the ink with a paper towel. Wear latex gloves. The original absorber in the bottom of the spittoon is no longer available as a spare part. You can make your own out of absorbent foam or sponge that is about 1/4" thick.
If you have had a spill and want to take your Officejet apart to do a cleanup, I have detailed disassembly instructions.

I got this machine from a friend and apparently he had the spill after refilling the ink cartridge. I would like to do a cleanup. I would appreciate the disassembly info. Thanks

 | Re: hp officejet ink absorber by Bert (2/14/04 11:28 PM) reply | +1 + / - | Removing the case is relatively easy but I recommend that you check the spittoon for liquid ink first, because if it is present a spill can occur while removing the case. The spittoon is just to the left of the carriage when it's in the service station.
Have a Torx (T20) driver handy because you will need it to release two ground straps as the case is removed. They are to the right and left of the paper tray.
CAUTION: Note how the flat cable coming from the carriage routes. Make sure that is routed correctly after the case is reinstalled before turning the power on.
Removing the Case Remove the paper tray first. There is a latch, accessed from the bottom, near each corner. Insert a medium sized slot screwdriver into each latch slot to release them. You may want to take a look ahead of time with a flashlight in order to understand how they work. Patience is required because the case fits tightly to the base, and sometimes it's difficult to release all four latches at the same time (they tend to relatch). Once the case is released from the base, there are several cables that need to be unplugged, along with the ground straps I mentioned, before the case will come free.
Disassembling the Mechanism You will need a T10 Torx driver. This procedure may seem a bit complicated but the mechanism is actually easy to disassemble. Just observe the CAUTION and you won’t get into trouble.
1. Disengage the carriage drive belt by depressing the spring-loaded roller on the left. 2. Remove the encoder strip by depressing the spring clip on the left. Take note that the encoder strip goes through a “tunnel” in the carriage. 3. Remove the carriage rod. CAUTION: It is NOT necessary to remove any screws. The rod is held in place by the large spring clip on the left. The clip is retained by a “claw.” You can see it by viewing the clip from a low angle. It can be released with a small slot style screwdriver. Once the clip is removed the left end of the rod can be lifted and then pulled out of the carriage. 4. Remove the two Torx screws securing the curved metal plate covering the feed rollers. 5. Remove the sliding clutch actuator on the left. 6. Remove the feed roller shaft tensioner on the left. 7. Remove the return spring on the left end of the feed rollers. 8. Remove the ink spittoon on right end of the feed rollers. 9. Lift out the feed rollers. NOTE: There is a socket on the lower left end of the feed rollers that engages a large claw. The socket and claw must be reengaged upon reassembly or the printer will not feed paper. 10. You will now see three small rubber pinch rollers, one of which is in the separator pad.

She was given a OfficeJet 350 All-in-One machine and wants to use it as a fax/copy machine not connected to a computer. The trouble is the machine ink coverage is excessive and wet. She replaced the cartridge that was in it with an original HP cartridge thinking that the problem was the "remanufactured cartridge", but she still has the same problem. Could it be it associated with the same problem of too much ink in the absorber and the problem is in the machine and not the cartridge?

This is the second Canon printer to do so (the first one I threw away...). Is anything I can do? I do not know even the ABC of printer's fixing! Thank Euro.
