 | Re: Epson stylus 740 by Wes (1/13/04 6:39 PM) reply | + / - | The flashing lights are a "Maintenance request error" or a "Fatal error". Most of the time it is a "Maintenance request error" which means the waste ink pads need to be serviced. You can reset the waste ink counter but the ink pads will need to be serviced at some point.
To see what is involved in servicing the waste ink pas try this link http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/wip.html
To reset the waste ink counter you can use the SSC service utility to reset the "Protrction Counter"
You can get the utility from here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html But it only works under the Windows operating system there is no Mac software available that I know of at this time.
I hope this helps.

 | Re: Epson stylus 740 by Wes (1/13/04 9:02 PM) reply | + / - | You might want to reinstall or update the drivers. AndTry to print a test page without the printer being connected to the computer. If the printer can print by itself then you know you have a driver/cable or printer port problem.
To print a test page press and hold the paperfeed button then turn the printer on then release the paperfeed button.
The printer cable may be failing if you have another cable you might want to give that a try.
I hope this helps.

 | Re: Epson stylus 740 by Denny Conway (4/26/05 10:35 AM) reply | + / - | tiamaria...Just to let you know: There is an "Epson Stylus 400,440,640,660,740 Printer Information Page" that is available to view at http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/440.html , that may be of some help to you. It does have a section on the left side you can click-on, titled WASTE INK PAD SERVICING and also a section titled HOUSING REMOVAL, that will be of some help to you, if you want to try the needed servicing. However, you may need to go on-line and buy and download the actual reset procedure, to clear the actual waste ink pad counter, if that SSC Service Utility will not actually work for you. Unfortunatly, that ssc service utility may not actually work on all epson printers and not on all operating systems, so you will have to check it out for yourself...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson stylus 740 by Denny Conway (4/26/05 10:37 AM) reply | + / - | tiamaria..Reguarding that ssc service utility: Here's some previously posted info that may also help. "NEWUSER Re: Epson Error and power light flashing by newuser (4/5/05 11:10 AM). To reset the error download this utility: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . Once installed run the program and configure it, closing the main window and right clicking the icon in the tray area, from there choose Configure and select your printers model. After configuration, select Protection counter -> Reset protection counter, it should be able to clear the error message. If that does not actually work, then the only suggestion I can give is to perform a soft-reset before resetting counter. Remove also the Epson status agent, it detects errors and it may hinder communication with the printer, then reboot your pc. As profile choose the one sscservice didn't use after autoconfiguration, check for printer response. Remember that you should also clean the waste ink pads located at the printer bottom. For a more in-depth procedure by NEWUSER, go to his site at http://myprinter.altervista.org/simplefaq/mysimplefaq.html#counter "...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson stylus 740 all lights blinking by rmm149 (10/21/05 9:41 PM) reply | +1 + / - | I had all three lights blinking on my 740. I tried the ssc-service program but it would not commumicate with the printer.
I found a manual reset procedure which worked.
Hold down the paper feed and ink button and turn on the printer. The paper light will light
Release both buttons and press the ink button for about 10 seconds until it resets.

 | Re: Epson stylus 740 by printerrepairpros (11/9/05 3:18 PM) reply | + / - | Resetting the waste ink counter solves only part of the problem. In order to prevent ink from oozing out of the printer at some time in the future, clean or replace the waste ink pads. Hope this helps.

 | Re: Epson stylus 740 by moe (6/12/07 1:26 PM) reply | + / - | Power up, when cartridge moves, pull the plug. Then you can move it anywhere you want. If it still doesn't move, printer is broken.

Have a laptop now - will it be possible to connect it to the 760 as all the USB's are different? Before I go to the shops and they try to sell me a million different things...

 | Re: Re: Epson stylus 740 all lights blinking by cliokent (10/9/07 2:54 PM) reply | + / - | Bless you, rmn149! I had been using my Epson 740, with it performing just fine, when suddenly I got the dreaded three lights flashing when I went to print again a few minutes later. I tried the fixes suggested back in 2001 (by an Epson tech person) that also involved holding down certain buttons while turning on, etc. But no luck. I was fairly well resigned to the apparent sentence of death by an internal fatal printer error. However, I tried this one, and lo and behold, it worked! I should note that, as with the other button pressing fixes, although rmn149 didn't say so, I started with both computer and printer turned off and the printed USB cable disconnected at the printer-end port. I don't know the reason for this, but earlier fix-prescriptions said to do this, so I thought I'd rather be safe than sorry.
The printer may indeed proceed to leak ink, but hey, it's now about 9 yrs old and has given good service (though needing tweaking from time to time, for one reason or another, by me following someone else's instructions). But what I'm mainly trying to do is to get both my original iMac and the printer to survive long enough until I can replace at least the computer with the supposedly forthcoming new release (always postponed since spring) of OS 10 (called Leopard), and maybe Apple will come out with improved desktops too at about the same time. I guess I'm probably looking at something like Dec. or Jan. I doubt the printer can be used with said new Mac, but it's given good service so I can't complain. And, drat, the generic (low-priced, from China, I guess), non-OEM ink cartridges no longer seem available from the cartridge place I've ordered them from for years (in Florida). They've worked just fine, and I couldn't have afforded anything else. But a few months ago I got an e-mail saying they were going to sell out of their limited stock, since evidently they were being sued by Epson for selling the knockoffs. These were the kind without some of the electronics in the cartridge, evidently something trying to foil the knockoffs, but evidently making such cartridges even more expensive than what I consider an obscene price for the OEMs for the 740. I use way too much ink to afford those. Anybody know whether/where any other (reasonably reputable) company may be that still sells decent low-priced generics?
Thanks again, rmn149!

 | Re: Epson stylus 740 by rmm149 (11/24/07 6:52 AM) reply | + / - | printerrepairpros is correct. When you get the 3 blinking lights it is possible that the waste ink pad is satuated. Mine wasn't full to the point of leaking but I cleaned it anyway. The waste pad is a foam pad that sits under the ink cartridge when it is parked. If you take the cover off the printer, you can access the pad and soak up the ink with a paper towel and/or clean it with some inkjet cleaning fluid.

 | Epson stylus 740 Ink light won't go out by eric Baldwin (6/27/08 10:59 AM) reply | + / - | I've replaced the ink cartridge with a brand new Epson cartridge and the ink light won't go out and nothing prints. I can't even run the Epson utility. I've tried the manual reset. The SSC utility doesn't register the printer. BUT the dang thing shows up in the Print dialog. Any thoughts?
