I have an HP Officejet K60 that is about 1 1/2 yrs old. I recently received a Scanner failure error, turn power off and on again. The scanner is illuminating nad it appears to go through its normal cycle. The HP site suggested another power source which I tried but to no avail. I don't believe the scanner element is bad. Any suggestions. Thanks
Your OJ can be reset by pressing # and 4 or # and 6 while plugging in the power. Hold the buttons until the display responds with a reset message. If one combination does not work try the other. If the error persists after doing a reset, I suspect that you have a defective scanner. An illuminating scanner can still be be defective.

I thought the reset worked because I was able to scan 5 pages and fax 5 pages in one session. Then next time time I power up - same scanner failure.
One alternative might be to replace the bulb. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase just the bulb? Do you have to get the whole 'bulb assembly' as shown in the parts blow-up on the HP site? Has anybody had any luck getting this sucker apart? I've removed every screw that I can find and I still can't get it apart. It must magically 'snap' together or something. Is it intentionally made so DIY-ers can't do anything about a malfuntion?
This scanner failure problem is very similar to those I've directly experienced on an R-series and a G-series machine.
The fix if the bulb is still lighting up is to clean the mirrors that transmit the image to the electric "eye". It's really only dirty mirrors and a dirty lens.
Now I wish I had some magic text for how to open up one of these machines to access those mirrors - I can tell you exactly on other machines - but I cannot on the K-series.
If any of you are mechanically inclined, or willing to undertake and document your own method, please do so.
I know of someone who could use this procedure also.
if you open the top cover, there are 6 silver screws and 2 black screws that hold the top panels on. remove the 4 silver screws closest to the front. then pop off the right and left side covers. [start with the top center... just pull.] there is a clip in the front that you may need a small screwdriver to help pry loose. these clips are right below the dark gray panel over the scanner unit. pry/pull away from the front of the printer. there are 2 gray clips, 1 on either side of the scanner assembly. insert a small screwdriver into them to pop them out. you should be able to lift the scanner assembly out of the printer now. unplug the power to the motor and unplug the unit from the control board if you want. then remove the 6 black screws from the bottom of the unit. there should be 3 mirrors visible now. i wouldn't recommend removing them... to avoid damaging them, and to not have the hassle of re-aligning them later. you should be able to use a glass cleaner on them, just don't spray cleaner directly onto the surface. once clean, just reassemble. hope this helps!
Now can't scan or fax using Officejet K60 to fax or scan to/from the PC. Receive error messages from HP Director. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software multiple times with no success.
my scanner wont work for some reason. we have been scanning photos when we first moved to our house its not working please contact me at trudy586@hotmail.com thaankx!!!!
Thanks for the post. I walked through your step by step and now I'm able to fax again.
I now have 3 faint lines about an inch apart running down the sheet after I ran a couple copies. I assume it's on any faxes too. Do I need to clean the mirrors better (I used a new soft optical lens cleaner) or could it be something else?
Have U rec'd any help or answers yet? The scanner problem started days ago, I've had this k60 6yrs. I'm getting nowhere with HP support - I've tried everything! Would appreciate any help or answers I can get @ this point...:)
I tried all of the resets and software remedies. The only thing that fixed my K60 for the long term (over a year now) was a thorough cleaning right down to the bulb. The first hurdle was actually getting the unit apart. I had all the screws out and it still would not come apart. I finally found where the pressure had to be applied and where to pry it just right. After that, its a matter of keeping track of the order of what you take apart and putting it back the same way. As a friend has for his signature on emails, "All parts should go together without forcing. You must remember that the parts you are reassembling were disassembled by you. Therefore, if you can't get them together again, there must be a reason. By all means, do not use a hammer.
I tried cleaning the mirrors and bulb as per your instructions. It wasn't too difficult and worked perfectly. My K60 is converted from "boat anchor" to useable all-in-one. Thanks!
the screws on the top and elsewhere on the printer are all torx. you will need to purchase a set of torx drivers or bits from almost any hardware store. torx bits are numbered t-4, t-5, etc. i don't think you will need anything smaller than a t-8 or anything larger than a t-20.
I followed the reset instructions and could scan 1 page. I followed kuludown's instructions to clean the mirrows and the scanner has started working. Thanks very much.
I have the same scanner failure on mine as well. I think there is a conspiracy by H.P. that will intice us to buy a new one, rather than them to fix the old one. I am pissed off!!!
i had the same scanner failure with my hp k60 and i followed these instructions and cleaned the mirrors and the k60 works like new again. thanks A1techmm
I tried to reset it and it didn't work. I scanned something about 4 years ago and it worked. We keep getting the error that is isn't connected to the PC but we checked in the control panel and it is connected? I really need to scan something soon.
wow wee! I did it. I thought i was going to need a new scanner but cleaning the mirrors worked. To anyone trying this remember to clean the underside of the top mirror you see. that is the one that collects the most dust!
Well the cleaning of the mirrors went just fine except, after i put everything back, the machine is as dead as a dodo, nothing powers up. Aghhhhhh.....
Make sure the cable coming from the Control Panel is plugged in properly/securely. If it is a ribbon cable it is possible to replug it rotated 180 degrees, it which case there will be no electrical contact.
Another success story kuludown. Followed the instructions to dismantle the K60 and cleaned the mirrors. Scanners works again after 2 years of non activity.
Cleaning instructions worked perfectly - my k60 is back in operation! Great post! one clarification though - the clips to pop off the sides are located in the front of the printer, below the control panel (where the hinges are).
Followed instructions, including correcting the ribbon cable insertion, and the scanner now works again. Saved the printer and also the extra ink cartridges I had just purchased! Thank you for the information.
Hi! I just bought an OfficeJet K60 at a rummage sale. Could someone tell me where I can get a set of directions? I would LOVE to set it up & use it, but I NEED DIRECTIONS! Yes, I AM A MAN, & I am ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS! I am NOT afraid of asking for help if I am NOT sure how to do something.
HP doesn't seem to offer the original User Guide anymore. If you want it email me by clicking on the crossed tools to the right of my name. Be specific about what you need.
Well hp.com is a good source for this information as far as the drivers and software. I didnt really find the manual but I didnt take a long time to look however I did find it at the site below.
Dismantling, cleaning 3 mirrors reassembling worked again...total time for non-techy...120 minutes..including 2 phonecalls and 45 minutes washing hands and cleaning up spilled ink...(see #2 below)
Several thoughts-
1. Removing the left and right covers is problematic until you realize the front cover must be pried forward to clear its latch, and the top edge must be lifted to clear lips. Also to remove left cover its better to quickly unscrew and remove the old cable latches on back. Also note the clips beneath the printer.
2. What is with all the ink that spills? Seems like there is an internal reservoir that catches all drippings from carridge. I tipped machine up to look beneath and watched ink drain all over an old desk. With a do over I'd soak this up early while power is on by opeing cartridge bay...carriage slides to center, stuff some paper towels into the reservoir below to right, repeat til satisfied. Either way I'd do this on newspaper or workbench in case of spillage.
3. Based on the amount of "blue dust/overspray mist residue" everywhere inside the cover, I'd theorize the real issue is the bottom mirror is covered with the same mist residue. My cleaning wipe came back blue...ps. I used a coffee filter...low lint residual.
Thanks for the help all....saved me a hundo or more and I'm back in action.
I have the same scanner failure error. I am going to follow the instructions from kuludown, but I don't have a torx driver with me (never used one either). I am going to get one. Which size do I need for K60 printer?
I have read many good tips on this forum, each with their own inputs but still lacking in vital information. So I compiled my own and hope someone can use them.
Tools required: 1/8” and ¼” flat screwdrivers, T-10 torx bit (preferably magnetic), clean lint-free cotton cloth, isopropyl alchohol.
1. Open the Control Panel and Cartridge acess panels. Remove the two silver screws nearest the Front Panel. 2. Just under the Control Panel hinges, in the curved section, insert the 1/8” screwdriver and pry forward while pulling the cover to the side. The covers should pop out and stay. 3. There are two black screws toward the back. At approximately ½” toward the front insert the 1/8” screwdriver and pry up while pulling the cover to the side. 4. Continue pulling the covers to the side from the front. The right cover should come off easily, but the left cover has to clear the connector in the back. 5. Remove the screw holding the green ground wire from the Control Panel and pull the panel forward and down to remove. Disconnect the ribbon cable and put aside. 6. On the left side of the printer is a metal ground “strap” from the Scanner assembly to the Electronics board. Remove the screw at the electronics board. 7. Disconnect the ribbon cables from the motor and Electronics board, remove the two silver screws holding the assembly in, then pry the Scanner assembly up and forward to remove. 8. Turn the Scanner assembly over and remove the gray plastic retainer clip from the side AWAY from the motor. 9. Remove the 8 black screws and lift the cover CAREFULLY from the side AWAY from the motor first. You may have to lift the edge of the other clip slightly to fully remove the cover. 10. Using the alchohol and lint free cotton cloth, clean the mirrors. Be sure to blow out any dust that may fall on the mirrors after cleaning. 11. Immediately replace the cover, very carefully, with the motor end in first under the clip. Replace the other clip. 12. Install the Scanner assenbly in the printer with the front edge first, then the back edge. Make sure the ribbon cable is on the left side and free. Install the two silver screws. 13. Install the grounding “strap” screw and both the motor and ribbon connectors. 14. Install the Control panel, ground wire, and ribbon cable. 15. Install the left cover, beginning in the back with the connector while rotating it inward toward the front. 16. Repeat with the right cover. Be sure the front of the covers are snapped in place below the Control panel hinges.
I just posted your answer (if you had not already got one) in the Forum. The size torx is T-10 and should be magnetic if possible. You can get them at any flea market, usually in a set of a variety of sizes.
