 | Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by Neill (1/3/04 12:46 PM) | +25 + / - | I have two models of Canon printers. An S520 and an S820. I'd sure appreciate it if someone could give me the proceedure for each (possibly the same for both)for resetting the Waste Ink counter for these models. Canon loves to change the proceedure to keep us for doing our own maintenance. Thanks, Neill (Oregon)

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by Sue (1/6/04 6:59 PM) | + / - | Help, I just got the waste tank error for my printer. I need a schematic for a Canon BJC 1000 and how do I replace this "blotter" or do I need to. Can I just reset the waste ink counter and keep using the same blotter. I have been quoted a price of $29 for the replacement blotter. Is this for real! Planned obsolescence built in to the printer.

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by Wes (1/6/04 7:07 PM) | +3 + / - | You might try 2manuals.com for the service manual but here is the reset code for the BJC 1000.
1: Remove Cartridge 2: Unplug the AC Power Cord 3: Hold down the RESUME button 4: Release RESUME after plugging in the AC Power cord. 5: Press the RESUME once within 5 seconds and release the RESUME . 6: Press and HOLD RESUME for two seconds or more and release it. 7: Press and HOLD RESUME for two seconds or more and release it. 8: Unplug AC Power Cord to set data.
I hope this info helps.

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by Sue (1/7/04 12:02 AM) | + / - | Thanks Wes, this worked like a charm and I'm back in business. Do I have to replace the blotter or just keep resetting the counter when I get this message?

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by Wes (1/7/04 12:50 AM) | +1 + / - | You should clean or replace the pad at some point but most of the time you can get away with resetting the ink counter a few times before you need to clean or replace the pad.
I'm glad the reset worked for you.
Wes.

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by chimp says (3/9/04 5:47 PM) | +1 + / - | The waste-ink counter for the BJ F900, F890, F700, F500, S900, S820, S750 and S520 are all reset in the same manner. Turn off the printer. Press and hold the RESUME button, then press and hold the POWER button. Release the RESUME button, then press and release the RESUME button two more times in succession. (youre still holding the POWER button during this). The printer mechanics will move momentarily. You are now in Service mode. Pressing the RESUME key will select a function; for example, pressing RESUME 4 times will select the clear waste ink counter function. The lamp will alternate color with each key press. 1. service/factory test printout, including ink sensor check 2. EEPROM info printout 3. EEPROM initialization 4. Clear the waste-ink counter 5. Printer model setting. (more selections beyond this- leave this alone) After selecting mode, press the POWER button to commit the change, and return to the top of the function selection menu. Pressing the POWER button again turns off the printer for a restart. If you have a defective printer head, your power lamp may flash during the service mode key-in, and info printouts may not work. In this case, clearing the waste-ink counter may not fix your problem.

 | F30 Wrong Cartridge Error Message by Brian (7/23/04 12:36 PM) | +3 + / - | Here is my solution to the "Wrong Cartridge" error message I got on my F30 Multipass. So far it is working. I got this message when I removed the printhead to refill the ink cartridges. All of the color cartridges were empty, so rather than remove them, I took the printhead out. I filled the cartridges, then put the print head back in. I got the "Set Alignment" message and did that. All was well for a day until I started getting the "Wrong Cartridge" message. I tried one of the power reset/hold down the buttons in the previous messages, which didn't work. On a newsgroup post from 2003, I saw a message to remove the front grey control panel, remove and re-seat the white ribbon cable. That didn't work either. Since removing and installing the print head caused the error message, I decided to focus on a bad connection condition. From years of electronic repair experience, a number of problems can be caused due to a poor connection. I made sure that the gold pads on the print head were clean. I used the eraser from a brand new pencil to clean them up. I also *carefully* used the eraser head to clean the wire finger connections on the sliding carriage, where the print head makes contact. NOTE: these fingers are very delicate; I used a "downward motion" of the eraser moving across the wires to gently clean them. The idea here is to remove the slightest film of oxidation to enable a clean connection between the finger wires and the print head contacts. When I installed the print head back into the printer, I got the "Set Alignment" message again, and the printer is working. Brian

 | Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by steven (1/7/05 5:22 PM) | + / - | I have a Cannon S630. I followed the reset procedures. That went well, but now when the printer is turned on, it goes thorugh normal procedure, then the print heads stop at center and the power light flashes green non stop. If I ignore the problem long enough, the printer will make a constant beep. It's almost like the printer thinks the cover is open. I cleaned the contacts for the lid closed receptors (Sorry I can't think of the proper name), but it made no difference. What is going on? Do you know what more I should check? Help.

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by Arthur (2/20/05 1:54 PM) | +1 + / - | Hi, A few weeks ago I stupidly refilled the Megatoner ink cartridges (very inexpensive) on my Canon S9000 several times during a big print run. I thought I was going through too much ink too fast, but I was a man on a mission. Now I'm getting 8 blinks and the code reset doesn't do anything. I didn't know such a thing as a waste ink tank existed, but it's not surprising if it's full. Can I empty the waste ink tank myself? I don't know what to do next. Thanks for any help. Arthur

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by indy (3/31/05 10:58 AM) | + / - | Here is the solution to all the S520 (and related 750, 820 and 900) printer waste tank and orange flash problems.
Each print job wastes a bit of ink in the post print cleaning sequence. The post print job noise you hear is a little pump cleaning the heads and moving the waste ink into an absorbent pad (the infamous "waste ink tank") located underneath the printer frame (when new, the pad is white). The machine keeps track of how many print jobs you do and eventualy decides that you need to replace the pad since it is theoretically saturated and will not absorb more ink. The excess will begin to fill the bottom of the printer. At that time the machine starts the seven orange flashes to indicate "tank full" and will no longer print. Resetting the count will allow you to continue, however, you are now at risk of collecting ink under the frame, with a nasty potential to run all over your rug/clothes/the dog/etc. Thus the pad needs either cleaning (not very effective) or replacement (relatively easy).
Call ABC Electronics, a Canon dealer in San Francisco (415 550 3100), and speak to John, a real nice guy and very cooperative. Not only will he give you the code sequence to reset the "tank full" state, he will sell you a replacement pad for the machine (this is the "waste ink tank"). The cost (3/29/05) is about $5 plus shipping. Although the pad can be removed and cleaned (sort of), the ink is comprised of very fine particles and consequentlty it is impossible to completely clean the pad, and very wasteful of water to boot.
The difficulty to replace the pad is akin to replacing a toaster oven element, a job for any 5 year old. Just be careful. Power the machine and open the lid to move the head carriage to the center. Then remove power cord. Remove the print carriage from the carrier (not the tanks, the whole carriage assembly), by lifting up the gray lever. Put a piece of cellophane tape (musn't use the word Scotch) over the head openings to protect them from damage and lay the assembly on its side. The ink will not run out nor will it dry out.
The head can be cleaned with filtered water after removing the cartidges, just be extremely careful not to damage the head surfaces (look at them with a 10x lens to see just how small the openings are and how easy it is to damage them).
There are four slots in the back with tabs inside that must be depressed in order to free the top. There are two tabs underneath that must be pushed in to free the power inlet box (it slides up and back, watch out for the wire connector when the box comes free). There are two screws that hold the frame to the bottom, one on each side near the back corner of the frame. They are gold with a washer head. Remove those and lift and wiggle the frame up and out to the rear.
On the right side of the head travel path, where the head sits when not printing, are two small pads, one square and one rectangular. They are supposed to be white, probably they are black. Carefully pluck those out with tweezers and wash them (very inky!!). Be careful of the little plastic shields near the pads.
In the chassis box is a narrow thick pad on top of the waste pad. This does not seem to collect ink (at least in mine it did not). Remove this and then the waste pad. You can try to clean the waste pad (use warm filtered water since you need to get rid of the ink particles in the pad), however, it is a big waste of water and a hell of a lot easier to throw it away and put a new one in (get it from John, or perhaps from another cooperative Canon dealer nearer to you, some are downright nasty when asked to sell a replacement pad).
I have done the above procedure twice over the years and I essentially get a new printer each time. The Canon service manual can be purchased from "2manuals.com" as a PDF for $6.99. It gives you all the service notes and warnings, however, no disassembly procedures. A good book to have.
In general, I think the S520 is a good printer, perhaps a bit wasteful of ink but that may be the price you pay for photo quality prints, IMHO. And it is fast enough for government work :))
ciao Indy

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by Herbert (4/1/05 6:01 AM) | -1 + / - | Hi, Indy! My grateful thanks for your explicit, clear and detailed instructions for dismantling and dealing with the waste ink pad. But my Canon is an i350. Before dismantling, can you tell me whether your instructions apply to my model also (for, if not, I might screw it all up, knowing me!). Also, Canon agents here are quite unhelpful, so I would like to try John in San Fran for a new pad and for the reset code. But getting a detailed reset code over the 'phone can lead to mistakes (and one would be enough!), so do you have an email address for John? (I assume that you do not have the reet code or you would not have refered me to John.) Many thanks. Herbert.

|
 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by Anonymous (4/3/05 3:34 PM) | + / - | The website for ABC is www.abctechinc.com. As I said, John there was very cooperative and not only sold me the printer waste ink pad but was willing to give me the reset codes. However, I had already purchased the service manual from 2manuals.com which gives all the codes for all canon printers of that series. Check them out. They have a lot of books there (download PDF), all cheap. So, spring for less than a sawbuck and sleep well at night.

 | i550 waste tank reset, maybe others. by Timbo (4/13/05 5:21 PM) | + / - | I tried all the above fixes for my i550, having washed the pads out. But it still wouldn't work. Having an evening of trying, I eventually got it running by the following means :-
1. From power off, HOLD down the RESUME button. 2. Press and HOLD down the POWER button, RELEASE the RESUME. 3. STILL HOLDING the POWER button, PRESS and RELEASE the RESUME button 4 times. 4. RELEASE the POWER button, and PRESS it again to turn off the machine. 5. Turn on and try.
I can't remember whether the printer was connected to the PC at the time, it may be worth trying both ways.

 | Re: Re: i320Canon printers flashing light every time. by IceBrandZero (4/29/05 2:22 AM) | + / - | here are the steps to make it a permanent reset. please follow these instructions carefully as you might end up doing the wrong thing and end up not resetting your printer.
Using the I320 Service Tool 1. setup your pc and install windows 98/98SE/ME. this is required to ensure that the i320 service tool will run. 2. after installation (which includes all drivers), install the appropriate printer driver for the printer. you can download it from canon's driver download site. 3. run the i320 service tool and follow the steps below.
EEPROM reset / Destination setting 4. install the print head, and while holding down the POWER button, plug in the AC cable (the green lamp lights up.) 5. while still holding down the POWER button, press the RESUME button twice and release the POWER button to enter the Service Mode (each press of the RESUME button changes the LED color: the LED lights in orange the first time, and in green at the second time.) 6. connect the printer to the computer, select "USB PORT" using the i320 service tool. 7. Destination setting -other than Japan: select "1" in "SET DESTINATION" -Japan: select "2" in "SET DESTINATION" EEPROM reset EEPROM is reset at the same time when the destination is set.
you can download the i320 Service Tool from this address: http://www.it0577.com/yezmao/i320.exe note: the "I/F dll can not be loaded" error means that you were running the i320 service tool without the printer's drivers installed on your computer. make sure that you have installed the printer driver first before attempting to reset the printer.

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by bmoffitt (5/5/05 9:54 PM) | + / - | On my i850, I execute the sequence to go into service mode, but it doesn't go. What happens is this:
1. Printer off 2. Hold down "Reset," press "Power" 3. Release "Reset," press "Reset" twice (light goes from green to orange on first press, then back to green on second press) 4. Release both "Power" and "Reset" 5. Printer cycles briefly, then goes back to flashing long green, 8 short oranges, long green, ad nauseum.
When I press the "Reset" button again, the light glows orange and changes color as if it is following my will, but when I hit the "Power" button again nothing happens.
According to the manual, 8 flashes means the waste tank is full... could there actually be a mechanical problem?

You should try the procedure with the print head removed. I had the same problem with an s9000 that wouldn't reset untill I removed the print head.
If it works just put the print head back in and see what happens.
You might have to press the power button 3 or more times to get the printer to shut off.
If the printer doesn't off just unplug the power cord for a few seconds and plug it back in.

I tried it; when I got into the diagnostic mode (after pressing the "Reset" button twice and releasing the "Power" button) the green light just flashed incessantly (this is different from the behavior when the printhead is installed, when it flashes green, then orange incessantly).
Very mysterious... I'd love to hear some ideas, 'cuz I'm out...
Thanks anyway!!!

 | Re: Paper blank by Anonymous (5/13/05 11:46 PM) | + / - | I think your printhead is clogged, Usually you can take that printhead and 'wash' it with warm water, only a little. Never touch the electronic circuit in printhead, never wash it. Do it for about 5 minutes. And then give it centrifugal movement to clean the remain ink in printhead Change the BCi-24 cartridge with the original one, put in printhead. Run cleaning for about 3 times. Finished
I use this method for about 3 IP1000 and all succeeded

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by bmoffitt (6/4/05 10:59 AM) | + / - | OK, after just ignoring the problem for several weeks, I finally took it up again this morning and successfully reset the waste tank counter on my Canon i850.
On the subject of "just doin it wrong" (smiles to SuckaMC!), I found out that it makes a big difference to unplug the machine before you start the operation. It appears to contain some big capacitors that keep the machine "mostly on" even if it's "off," and the only way to turn it "really off" is to unplug it, then attempt to turn it on (while it's unplugged) to drain the capacitors. Then you can start the reset procedure by pressing down the "Power" and "Resume" buttons while plugging the machine in (I have three hands, how 'bout you??? ;->).
Geez... now, to get back to the original problem, that the printer isn't printing with 50% of the nozzles...

I followed your provided key sequence and was able to reset the "Check Printer" alarm in my MultiPass F30 printer. It is very close. The only thing is that there is no [OK] key on the F30 printer. I had to press [ON/OFF] key instead. After the waste tank full counter was reset, my printer works normally again.
I also have a MultiPass MP700 printer. I am sure that the key sequence will come in handy someday. Similarly, there is no [OK] key on the MultiPass MP700 printer.

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by mastewart (6/19/05 11:31 AM) | + / - | I got the manual from the company in San Francisco listed about halfway through this thread. Called them, spoke to someone named Dave and he send manual as a pdf. Warning: it is a huge file, may choke your mail server. I didn't get much help from Canon and am thinking I will replace with a b&w laser printer (or possibly color laser printer) as all the service techs I've spoken with over this problem indicate that ink jet printers have more problems and are more likely to have board failures. Any other ideas for final ways to troubleshoot my Check Printer problem would be greatly appreciated. I did not find anything resembling a waste ink tank reset code in the manual.
|
 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by gojollybill (6/19/05 7:24 PM) | + / - | Well, thank you for the input mastewart. I did solve the problem of the waste tank error at last. I went to the link where you can get pages from manuals for all the popular printers -- the service manual pages. I found on page 7 of the Canon S600 manual that they described the service codes including the waste tank counter reset. I noted that the procedure was much more clearly laid out and was a bit different than those given in the various posts on this forum. So when I followed the procedure from the service manual it all worked just fine. So I reset the waste counter, re initialized the EPROM, and reset the market code. Now the printer works like new. My suggesting if you are having trouble resetting the waste tank counter for a printer, go to the service manuals and download the appropriate page for the real scoop.
Thanks for reading Bill

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by Anonymous (6/20/05 8:20 AM) | + / - | I only have a service manual for Canon F50, F30. What is the link for service manual pages that got you to manual for the F60? That would be extremely helpful?
|
 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by mastewart (6/20/05 8:48 AM) | + / - | Mastewart seeking info on the manual links. I only have a manual for Canon F30-F50, which does not appear to be the same as what gojollybill found. I would very much like to try same procedure if I could locate this manual (or just post the relevant clips).
|
 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by gojollybill (6/21/05 1:32 AM) | + / - | Hi Mastewart and Anonymous Sorry to be so obscure about where to find the manuals AND I see that also I mentioned the wrong page in the Canon S600 Service Manual. For the S600 the waste tank and other service mode resets are covered on page 2-29 which is Section 7 of the service manual.
Now where are the manuals? Go to the top of this forum and look right below the title "fixyourownprinter.com". You will see the word REFERENCE. Put your mouse pointer on REFERENCE and when you do the next line will change and will have the following - Cross Reference | Error Codes | Guides | Manuals | Publications | Drivers | Links
So then click on Manuals. That should take you to a page for Service Manuals. At the left are links to the brand of printer. If you click on one of those links you will be able to access the pages of the manual in either html or pdf.
Please note that I have been working with a Canon S600, not an F30, F50 etc. I see in going thru the Canon manuals on this site that there is no listing for the Canon F series printers. Perhaps going to 2manuals.com you could buy a copy for something around $6.99 from what I have read.

 | Re: No Subject by Anonymous (6/21/05 7:57 PM) | + / - | I have the same exact problem. My printer says "put in cartridge" and will do nothing. Did you find out how to fix it?
|
 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by gojollybill (6/22/05 12:07 AM) | + / - | Well, the remedy for Anonymous's (both of them) and for Desperate Person is the same. Get the REAL SERVICE MANUAL PAGES. So first go to the top of this forum as per my remarks in my post about 3 or 4 up the forum from here and look for the manual for your printer. If it is there retrieve the page having to do with the waste tank reset or service codes. Then FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY and I think it will work. Did for me. BUT, If you don't find the manual here then go to 2manuals.com and look for the manual for your printer there and order/pay for it (sorry about that, I was lucky and found the manual without paying). The service code procedures are a bit tricky but if you read them carefully -- in the manual not in the posts in this forum -- I think you may succeed. I hope. Good luck. Bill

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by Desperate Person (6/22/05 5:41 AM) | + / - | Bill,
I appreciate the info. Unfortunately the manual is not available on either web site for the Canon Multipass F20. Are there other sources for manuals you are aware of that would contain the reset codes?

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by gojollybill (6/22/05 4:13 PM) | + / - | Hi Desperate Person, Bill here gojollybill
Well heck. Sorry to hear that about the manuals. Well there IS one other thing you may try, I think it may work. There is a Canon Service Center in San Francisco. Way up the forum there is a post about calling there to get waste tank pads. for various Canon Printers. To save you the time picking thru all the posts here is the info in summary:
Phone Number ABC Electronics, 415 550 3100. Ask for John who is supposed to nice and cooperative. He can give you the code sequence to reset the "tank full" error. AND he can sell you the pads for the waste tank for about $5 plus shipping. This post went on to tell how to replace the pads. It was posted by "indy" on 3/31/05. I believe that the info is for the S series printers but John may be able to help you in regard to putting in the pad(s).
I see a lot of requests in the thread about F series printers but not too many answers. Be sure to scan thru all the posts though because there were some explanations. Regards, Bill

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon printers. by mastewart (6/23/05 11:33 AM) | + / - | Now I've worked my way through troubleshooting my Canon F60 to the directions: Check the paper sensor arm for any kind of obstruction that would keep it from freely moving in and out of the sensor. I have the manual and have crawled all over the machine but darned if I can find the paper sensor arm. It should be in the paper path somewhere?? Clues??
|
 | Re: Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon p by gojollybill (6/23/05 6:57 PM) | + / - | Well, Mastewart, I wish I could help with the Sensor Arm thing. That is a new one on me, I did not run into that on my S600 printer. Hopefully someone else who is reading the posts here can help. The trick of course is to find the paper sensor itself. Sounds like it must be some gadget that is next to the paper feed path and can tell the presence of paper or lack of paper. And it has an "arm" that moves in and out of it. Could be buried in the works somewhere. I would hope that the manual would somewhere describe the sensor and whatever maintenance it needs. Of course that is why manuals are frustrating.
Good luck. Hopefully someone will read and take pity before too long.

 | Re: Waste tank counter reset code for Canon print by Denny Conway (7/8/05 10:02 AM) | + / - | | rocky: A Service Error where all LED's/Lights are flashing at the same time [some models the lights will be alternatly blinking], or where you get an "Unknown Error Message", or a "General Error Message", or even a message telling you that "Parts inside your printer at the end of their service life, contact your dealer for replacement", or "Parts inside your printer require maintenance or replacement, call your service company", is normally a Maintenance Request Error. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and usually your remedy is to replace the waste ink pad/pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see exploded parts diagrams for most epson ink jet printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that waste ink counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work. You may be able to reset that waste ink counter, using the SSC SERVICE UTILITY available at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . Unfortunatly, that utility only works using a windows operating system. You can check and see if your particular epson printer is compatible, by going to http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html ...Here's some previously posted info that may also help. "NEWUSER Re: Epson Error and power light flashing by newuser (4/5/05 11:10 AM). To reset the error download this utility: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html .
