Same problem here.

I do quite a lot of printing and have two of these printers, called the i250 here in Australia. One has just started doing the same thing constantly, switching printheads by replacing with the head from the working machine makes no difference so it's not a head problem.

I'm on about the 30th replacement black ink tank on that printer and as these printers do a LOT of printing they also do LOTS of head cleaning, so I suspected the waste ink tank might be full, so I pulled it to bits. There's a vacuum pump that sucks ink from the cavity beneath the foam seats where the printhead normally rests when the printer's not printing, into an area behind it where the 2 sponge pads are that absorb the ink sucked from the area in front.

As I suspected, the front (smaller) sponge was soaked full of ink, the rear one was still partially white on the rear but soaked full of ink closer to the smaller sponge pad.

I washed/rinsed both of them, sun-dried them and put them back into the printer, both dry as a fart, and re-assembled the printer.

This did not fix the problem, I suspect there must be some kind of reset code to bring the printer back to life.

Can anybody help with this ?

This is the first time the print head has outlasted the printer mechanism with a Canon machine. I've been using s100P and BJC2100 printers, and it's the other way around with those machines, the machine outlasts the head which quickly deterioates after about 50 ink tank swaps :)

Larry & Roger: I'm sorry, but I do not usually work on Canon Printers, so I'm not really framiliar with them. The following web-site links may be useful in the future, if they don't help you right now. SITE #1: http://canonhelp.freehttp.com/ . A "Canon Help Page" for Error Codes, thats for a lot of the "BC" and "BJC" Printers. SITE #2: http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCprTSIndex.jsp . A Canon USA Technical Support page. SITE #3: http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCprSupport.jsp . A Canon USA "Contact Canon" site for PRODUCT INFORMATION/TECHNICAL SUPPORT. SITE #4: http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCprTSIndex.jsp?app=download . A Canon USA "Download Library" web-site. SITE #5: You can also try http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/canon/canonidx.htm , for possible help. I'm told that is a great site for older canons and includes information on the waste ink error...I hope this helps! Denny Conway

You're a legend, Denny.

I found this on one of your links, this gets rid of the problem and as an added bonus stops the stupid printer from doing perpetual head cleans every time you switch cartridges or pull the head out !!! How clever!

Now I control when the head should be cleaned, not Canon !

Here is a submitted workaround from Marko. But it is only a temporary fix.

This is copy paste that was on a google group message:

I have a temporary fix (doesn't keep without power):

1: Unplug power and USB.
2: Open door and hold power button.
3: Connect power.
4: Close door, then release power button.

Connect USB and press power to use.

Roger: Its nice to hear that information that I might have pointed you towards, may have helped. I don't usually work on Canon Printers, but I try to help on common problems when I can. Sometimes I simply point people towards web-site links that I think might help them and it sounds like it did this time...Thanks for the kind words! Denny Conway

Who said that all Aussies are a bunch of horny-handed sheep shearers! You’re a better man than I am Roger!

I managed to get the top cover off my i250 and cleaned up the upstream side of the waste ink system. I could see the cylindrical pump, but not the waste ink tank. Could Roger (or anyone) please explain where it is and how to get to it?

I guess there is plenty of spare capacity, so I have reset the counter as suggested and the machine is running ok, but I would still like to clean out that tank some time…….

I found this solution by BSF, used it and it worked:
"OK, Boys and Girls...here finally is the complete answer to the problem of the waste ink tank counter reset for Canon i250 and i350 printers.
Canon i250 & i250 waste ink tank counter reset. by BSF (12/10/04 10:13 PM)

1. Disconnect printer from AC power (take out AC cord or power off your power strip). Disconnect USB PC cable from printer.
2. Press and HOLD the POWER button (until step 7).
3. Reconnect power cord (turn on power) to the printer.
4. The indicator should be green.
5. Press and release the RESUME button , the indicator should be orange.
6. Press and release the RESUME button again, the indicator should be green.
7. NOW Release POWER button.
8. NOW Connect the printer to PC (USB cable).
9. NOW...I opened "Printers" and saw that a "copy" of my printer (i250 or i350) had been made. Make that COPY your default printer and all should work...It did for me.

You May Thank Me NOW!!!!

I must say...I went into the "GUTS" of the beast and cleaned out the PADS (they are actually vacuum pads that the INK is sucked through during a HEAD cleaning) a very messy undertaking.
I'm not sure how much life this will add to your printer.

Good Luck"
