Same problem, I'm having the same problem in reverse. My color will not print, Black Spotty. Called Lexmark, Printer out of warranty. They will not help me, I did figure it out though, the copper filiment that your cartridge contacts probably has a bad grid line to the contact point. Very common in these Crap Printers I will never but a Junk Mark again. Good Luck, oh and it costs more to repair it than to just buy a HP or Canon.
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Kevin (1/8/04 8:41 PM)
My warrenty just expired as well...but the problem we're having is with paper feeding improperly...or not at all. Tried to open the thing up...but didn't want to destroy it, can't get it open to clean the rollers. Any suggestions? We've really not used it much.
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Val (3/13/04 8:31 AM)
I am also having problems with the black printing, color is great, Lexmark no f-ng help either! Is there a way to replace the contact board where the cartridge connects? It looks discolored compared to where the color connects. Have tried lots of new cartridges still same problem.

I am having the same problem with the Lexmark x83 not printing clearly. It print but it comes out light and smeared. I have changed the cartridges but still have the same problems. I've taken the whole thing apart and cleaned inside out but no luck. What can else can I do?

I am having problems printing with the black cartridge. Same old story, just past the warranty. The only part that works is the scanner. Cannot afford to fix it unless someone knows of an easy fix that doesn't involve expensive repair men. I have tried several cartridges with the same results so it cannot be the cartridge.
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Tom (6/17/04 1:58 PM)
My Lexmark prints several lines of text just fine and then prints a line with just the bottom half of the text, then some perfect lines and bottom half again. Same problem using either black or color. I thought my problem was a fluke since this is a relatively new printer and not used very often, but after reading this and other boards I see that Lexmark problems are common. Last one I'll ever buy.

I posted about a week ago but in the meantime, like Kevin I have contacted Lexmark Support by e-mail and have gone back and forth with suggestions and tests to try to correct my problem. It still isn't corrected but I'm hopeful that it soon will be, at least whoever answers my e-mail is trying hard to help. To get in touch with them, go to www.lexmark.com, then click on technical support, then customer support, and under support tools click on e-mail support and you're on your way. Good luck

Alot of times if you call tech support and whine enough (all of you here seem good at that) they will replace the printer if your cartridge has damaged it. Make a big stink and they will send another x83/84/85
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by love_lexmark (7/21/04 10:35 AM)
Just try this test ................ Make sure that the printer is powered on. Disconnect the USB cable. Press the MENU button 10 times It should read [Maintenance] on the screen. Press the SELECT button 1 time. You should then see the word cartridges displayed on the printer screen. Press the right arrow button 3 times, which then brings you to the Self-test option. Press the Select button once. ........... if it prints blue/pink/yellow/black then carts and printer is okay... else printer or cart defective...please mail back with test results and i will assist further

My printer works fine, except the paper feeder always feeds the paper crooked so the paper gets crumpled and jammed. Anyone else have this problem, or know how to fix it?
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Amrith (8/6/04 5:53 PM)
If the papper is feeding crooked remove all the papers from the paper feed tray push one envelope in the paper feed and push it left to right and right to left just to clean the printer rollers and then the printer should feed the paper fine and also if the printer is connected to the surge protector or power stripe remove it and connect the printer directly to the wall outlet. Some times it happens the printer will not get the proper power supply. And if u still have the same problem it may be the issue with the printer roller itself.
May be this soln help u in solving the problem
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Amrith (8/6/04 6:21 PM)
Hey i think u are looking for the encoder strip which goes across the cartridge carrier. Here is the Lexmark Supplies No-800-438-2468 and the Lexmark parts no 800-553-9727. U can just have a check. Or else u can just contact the nearest service center and just look for any other encoder strip. Hope u got the proper soln

Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Lacey (8/9/04 11:17 AM)
I'm having a lot of the same problems I see posted here. I have bought 2 color cartridges, thinking something was wrong with the first one I bought, and my X83 will still only print in black and doesn't even recognize the color cartridge is there. I bought my kids a Lexmark Z23 (on sale at Wal-Mart and now I see why) and it didn't last two months and now their computer doesn't recognize it, even though I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. My X83 warranty has expired. Any help is welcome!
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Amrith (8/9/04 5:39 PM)
Hi Lacey I do understand that the LemarkX83 printer is having a lot of issues. But i think its not a good quality printer. Since the printer is not recognising the carts-Just follow this steps: .Remove the cartridges from the printer .Clean the copper contacts of the carts which is in the back using a dry paper towell .Snap the cart back to the printer .Press the right arrows and install the using the op panel of the printer .After that it should print the alignment page
If following all these steps if u still have the same issue its the problem with the printer
And about the Z23 printer if i can have some more information about the comp u are using and what kind of cable u are using(USB/Parallel) i would be glad to help u. I am very sure that we can solve the problem. Its just a minor issue.
Waiting for ur reply

My problem is different than all yours. When I power on my Lexmark X83 I get on message on the little screen that says "Unlock Scanner". I obviously have tried the toggle switch on the back of the computer as well as unplugging and plugging the printer back in.
I e-mailed lexmark Tech support and the said "Please move the lock switch(The red one at the back) from the down to the up spot, then back down. Then unplug the printer, and turn the printer on its left hand side(as you look straight at it). Then unplug the printer, and turn the printer on its left hand side(as you look straight at it). Turn it upright then plug tge power again. Power it on and if it makes the same sound and gives any errors, try printing and scanning with once more."
I tried this and it still gives me the same error message.
Any suggestions?

Ok I am having a little diffent problem then most here. Mine prints but the color is very weak AND it prints it in lines, with each swipe of the jet you can see each one. its mostly with the color but also does it with the black. I Have all the updated drivers, and I have replaced the cartridges. I have tried to take it apart to see if I can clean it, but I cant figure out how to get it open it only has to screws in the back and when you take them out nothing comes off to get itside. help me please with the problem or even if you can help me get the stupid thing open.
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Scott (8/16/04 10:18 AM)
My Lexmark x83 prints color but not black unless I soak the cartridge in hot water for about 1 minute. Then it prints about 7 pages great but then starts to fade out while continuing to print. Anotherwords, it seems to run out of ink. This is an ongoing problem even if I install a new ink jet cartridge. Please help cyber friends.

Like many of you, I have a X83 that will not recognize the color cart. It is one of few Lexmarks I have purchased. I buy computers and printers for a large corp. Last year I spent over $250K and Lexmark got some of that with HP and Brother. This year, Lexmark gets none of it..... I would appreciate a solution to the issue I have, but like many posts here have stated, Lexmark techsupport has been useless. ArchyD

Lexmark x83 printing problems - Cartridge Issues by Lana (8/28/04 10:14 PM)
A quality question for anyone out there listening.... Regarding cartridges that are not printing - Does there seem to be any difference between use of a brand new cartridge vs a refilled cartridge? I noticed on the Lexmark site they do not support issues in which the cartridge has been refilled - my guess is that it probably does not make a difference but I'd like to hear what your experiences are.
Thanks
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Printerdoc (9/1/04 12:27 PM)
Printer continues to say "Power Low". Tried turning off and on. Unplugged printer turned back on. It is plugged into a power strip that the computer shares. Has been working fine for a long time. Any ideas what this error message really means?
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Amrith (9/2/04 9:07 AM)
The main defference in using the refilled cart and the original cart are : 1: Refilled cart will damage the printer(More in Lexmark printer) 2: The print quality is not as good as the original cart. 3: Refilled cart will damage the print head of the printer and the printer will stop printing.
I think this will solve the doubt u had thank

I'm a frustrated Lexmark X83 owner. I'm running XP pro and my X83 takes more than 30 seconds before it starts to print a document. Once it starts to print it goes a great job. But does anyone have any idea how to fix the 30 second wait?
I have uninstalled and installed the driver with no better results.
Thanks!

After more reading and trill and error I found a solution. In the Properties of the printer I chose the Advanced tab, selected Print Processor button and changed the Print Processor to 'WinPrint'. It now printed immediately!

I have the same problem. Just downloaded a service manual for the printer. Based on the manual it looks like the gear train motor or system board could be bad.It looks like my motor is bad. When you turn on the machine the scanner head doesn't move. When I took it apart the motor was locked up.

Hope you check back, but I kind of doubt it after all this time, but maybe someone else can help. I am having the same problem as someone in an earlier post: After a time of nonuse my parents X83 wouldn't print, when I tried to figure out what's wrong, I got the carriage slamming the side, and so forth just as above. I downloaded the user manual, but that is basically useless. I would like to know where you found the repair manual you mentioned, as it may list what parts I could need for this problem. I have tried everything I can to this point, and need some intensive instruction for further help.

Here's a long shot. Try cleaing the cartridge contacts in the printer with isopropanol (high purity rubbing alcohol) or contact cleaner. Also while your at it, clean the cartridge contact points themselves. If you have attempted using refill kits to combat the rediculous price of cartridges this sometimes causes excess ink to end up on the contacts. Good luck.
Kevin, Your advice is the closest thing to the solution I have found. After you have finished shaking the darn thing upside down and hook it up and it still doesn't print colour, take it outside and get an 8 pound sledgehammer and let her rip! Next time I'll spend an extra 50 bucks for a decent printer (which is about the price of a couple of sets of printer cartridges that I have wasted messing with this piece of junk).
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by epalmer850 (5/16/05 9:02 AM)
I had a friend with a carriage stall message. I took a look at it- the black printhead overheated and melted to the maintenance station. Ordered a new maintenance station from Marketpoint http://marketpoint.com (about $12) and replaced the printhead.
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by mike brogan (5/30/05 5:01 AM)
Hey I think I,ve solved the Lexmark x83 problem! I live in England where we are geniuses in such issues. The printer is sensitive to barometric pressure, so I took it up to the roof turned it upside down and shook it as reccomended. Then I threw it off, and it worked great on the way down for a milisecond! Now how to prolong that moment???
Mike
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Anonymous (6/25/05 5:20 PM)
it was a mistake buying such a junk it caused me more of headache do not even give it to any one. trash it. and make sure no body get it out of the trash. I never buy lexmark again.
The problem you are having (printer carts slamming inside the printer) has to do with the encoder strip that resides behind the cart carrier. Here is what you can look for. The encoder strip is a slender plastic strip with metal wires embedded in it. This strip is behind the printer carts and run from the extreme left to the extreme right. It allows the printer to know just where the carts are in any given point in time. Most likely the strip has come out of the printer cart carrier. It is easily put back in. Just slide it into the little plastic housing that holds it. BE CAREFUL! This strip may come out if you pull on it too hard. If the encoder strip is not attached to the SIDES of the printer (where they insert) then you may be able to insert it back in. Hope this helps.
Ridiculous solution, but it worked. I took the unit, held it upside down, shook it hard (nothing fell out), plugged it back in and it is now working. Sheez. But I'm happy now. Thanks!!

Mine had the same problem.... and I fixed it. I called tech support... turn off printer. Open the front and remove all printer cartridges. Use a flashlight and locate a clear (kind of smokey) colored piece of plastic the problem is it came off its hook. Using your two index fingers pull it approx 1/4 in downward and slightly forward. Be very careful if you snap it they told me the printer would be useless. I used a dental mirror to help see behind the ink cartridge carrier.

I'm having a problem getting the lexmark 1185 printer to print black copies, but it stays on color which can hardly be seen by the naked eye. There is a new cartiga in it. Please help me!
Most of the Lexmarks have a cartridge maintenance page that you need to go to tell it you have installed a new cartridge or the # of the cartridge you installed. If you do not do this you usually end of with bad print results. Not familiar with this model, does it have that page?
Hi: I tried the test you mention. The blue, pink and yellow strips all print but the black strip does not print. My black cartridge had run out of ink before I replaced it. Could this be the problem? If so, what is the solution? Thanks Robert
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by kuby (8/21/05 7:07 AM)
I have had several Lexmark cartridges (ink) that were bad right out of the box. You might try and get the cartridge exchanged and try another one. Do the maintenance again. See if that helps.
My Print control program inicate that my colour ink level is low, even I have replaced both cartridges (black+colour). It still indicate that the colour ink level is low. The black cartridge is fine, it is printing, but not the colour. It just print out blank paper with a touch of black image. I have tried taking the cartridges out several times. Uninstall and reinstall, taking out the USB and power cables, all of no avail. Now I cannot even take the cartridges out, how hard I try it will not budge. Please advise.
Re: Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Nicholas Sterling (8/30/05 11:04 AM)
I just moved and reinstalled my printer to find that the control panel ribbon has been removed.
Anyone have any ideas on how to reinstall it? I've read some stuff on here that talks about unscrewing stuff, but I'm not sure I'm unscrewing the right thing.
Does anyone have a user manual they can email me? Does it have a fix for reattaching the control panel?
Any help would be appreciated.
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by CheapSk8 (8/31/05 11:37 AM)
Here's how I fixed my problem (i.e. the Control panel ribbon being removed):
After dismantling as much of the printer that I could by unscrewing every Black screw I could find (because something about the few silver ones scared me), I got a hold of what I believe was a lexmark service manual, and PUT ALL THE SCREWS BACK IN PLACE and started over. HINT: Don't do this part!
To make a long story short: 1) I removed the two Black screws on the rear cover, and then removed the rear cover. 2) after doing this I located the "motherboard" on the left side. 3) on the FAR LEFT there's a verticle white connector plug, and that's where I reinserted the control panel ribbon (after of course reconnecting the panel to the printer and making sure I fed the ribbon through the little slots so that it appeared down near the "motherboard" area). 4) After making sure that the ribbon was securely in place, I reattached the rear cover, replaced the screws, and everything worked fine.
I later found out I needed printer ink, but that's another story altogether.
I hope this helps someone else if they've encountered a similar problem.
I installed black cartridge, snaped into place . When I went to check the Color Cart---UNABLE TO REMOVE EITHER CART--LOCKED UP and does not usuall quality
I am ready to throw the unit out the window! Can anyone tell me how to unlock the scanner. The switch on the back is in the unlock position and I have turned the power off for a few minutes than the "unlock scanner" still appears when I plug the x83 back in. My whole unit is unless. Has anyone solved the "unlock scanner" problem? I would appreciate any help. Rylee
I did have this problem some time ago though I can't quite remember the detail now. as far as I remember the problem was due to the scanner carriage catching on the case internally, operating the lock/unlock switch had no effect. I had to undo the casing ang readjust the interlocking of the plastic mouldings slghtly to allow the carriage to move freely. You will need detach the control panel for access possibly so do take care with the fexible connector strip...good luck. BJ
PS As the problem appears to mechanical misalignment throwing it out of the window may just cure the problem!!

This message is in response to the post by Mark Lopez, posted 10/19/05 at 8:42 AM. I am sure that everybody is well aware of the nature of this type of scam. Mr. Lopez suggests that he will pay us $3,300 for our wonderful printers in the form of a cashier's cheque. All we have to do in return is to issue him a Western Union money order for $2,000. Of course, the cashier's cheque will bounce, but you won't find that out until after the $2,000 has already disappeared from your account. Mr. Lopez should be reported to the police authorities in whatever state he resides.

Goodness is everyone having the same problem. I bought a new cartriage because my black ink ran out, bought a new one and it is not printing. I am begining to think that my old cartriage was still good. It will print in color but I have not black ink. Warranty is out I guess. I have to look for my paper work.
Your problem is the scanner motor. It has burned out or is loose in it's mount. The motor is about $34 dollars from Lexmark. You will have to do some slight disassymbly to replace it tho. Raise and remove the scanner lid. Then remove the right side panel, it just snaps on. This will uncover the circuit board that the motor is plugged into, it's at the top of the board. The control panel is the next step. It snaps on also but be careful. after you remove the control panel it will also have to be unplugged from the circuit board. It is the ribbon in the middle at the beginning of the board. The ribbon itself unplugs from the connector. Don't try to pry the connector from the circuit board! After you remove the control panel you will see 2 phillips screws. Remove them and gently remove the cover from the top of the scanner. The glass will stay with the cover. The motor is on the right side of the scanner. It is held in place by 2 phillips screws. Remove them and feed the wiring as needed. Be careful of the belt. To remove the motor from the mount you must remove the gears and 2 phillips screws. Remove the retaining clips on the gears. Then you will be able to remove the screws. Reintall in reverse order... Good Luck

I finally fixed my printer problems -- I got rid of the unit and purchased a new one (not the same brand.) However, I did not throw it out the window but I did throw it in the trash. Thanks for your help, though. Rylee
Didn't work any better except it only prints in black. it actually see the color cartridge for a few seconds as full then reverts back to empty view. what next ?
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Anonymous (10/31/05 9:33 PM)
The scanner motor assy is at marketpoint.com and lexmark.com marketpoint is selling it for $10.92 + s/h and lexmark's is $11.50 + s/h. Marketpoint has a minimum of $20 not sure of lexmark. The part number for both sites is 12G6125. It shows as a gear assy but the motor comes with it. This is a common fix for the unlock scanner message. The scanner motor burns out or just stops working properly. Cheap fix.

Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by desmondp (11/26/05 12:17 PM)
My Lexmark x83 prints black but it only prints the part of each line (sometimes the top half, other times the bottom half of each line). The rest of it is missing or streaked. Color prints fine. The self-test indicates no problem. I have used the align cartridges function as well as the clean cartriges function. I have printed a test page and it prints fine. Everything indicates that the printer is functioning normally. Everything inside the printer looks okay and is pretty clean.
I have cleaned the cartridge contact points with isopropyl alcohol and I even tried turning the printer upside down and shaking it. I have also replaced the cartridges and turned the printer off and on. Nothing seems to work. The printer worked fine a week ago. I cannot figure out what is causing this especially since the test page prints out perfectly.
I just tried to install a Lexmark x83 printer. I followed the installation instructions to the letter. After 5 hours of trying to make it work I applied the following fix... 1: Threw it across the room. 2: Picked it up and threw it outside on the sidewalk. 3: Shot it 10 times with a 12 gauge shotgun. 4: Piled up the pieces and set fire to them. After all of this the x83 worked just the same as it did when I first installed it. Pictures available upon request.

I got this printer for free and should have gotten paid to take it. I got the Unlock Scanner message off but it took a really long time. There are too many unsatisified customers and they need to make a recall. The best idea i read on fixing the problems is buying a new one. THIS PRINTER SUCKS!!!
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by Anonymous (12/14/05 7:44 AM)
I had this same problem. It happened when I installed a digital camera. I finally went to lexmark.com and downloaded a new driver for the x83. That solved the problem.
I bought a Lexmark 1185. It worked for a few weeks, then wouldn't print---same problems being posted here. I had them send me another one---same problem---it lasted a few weeks and the same problems started over. I'm now on my third one and it printed OK for a couple of weeks then started the same problems over again. IT IS A PIECE OF TRASH! I will never buy another Lexmark.
I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM THAT YOU DESCRIBED IN YOUR E-MAIL SO IF SOME ONE REPLYS WOULD YOU MIND LETTING ME KNOW WHAT YOU DID TO FIX IT THANKS CORKY
Lexmark x1150 printing problems by unhorsed_fi (1/17/06 5:51 AM)
Turns out x1150 has the same problem! My color cartridge ran out so I replaced it. The printer recognizes the new cart but still won't print in color. I tried the cartridge on my mum's Lexmark x1150 and it worked fine but all I seem to get on mine is the black parts of a pic and the rest is just blank. Any help would be most welcome. Thanks, Fi
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by jharper1983 (1/17/06 6:14 PM)
I have this problem with my Lexmark x85 3 in 1 printer. I just bought new cartidges in September 2005, and every now and then I printed a picture here and there, and some documents, and stuff like that... the cartidges are still pretty full. Well, I got to print something in color today, and only the black shows up, no color prints at all. I removed the color cartidge, and it feels full, and even when I squeeze it lightly, ink comes out, so I know it has ink in it, and the printer ink level scale shows that its pretty full. What can I do to fix this? It seems after the printer sits for a few weeks, the color stops printing. Until I replace the cartridge, and they are so expensive! Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
just letting you know i had that same problem and it was easily fixed by realigning the cartridged under your properties for your printer on ur computer

When i align my cartridges, only rows A, B, C and E are printed (which is in black ink. My brand new color cart's ink meter is still showing all the way LOW. After i get an expected bullsh1t reply from lexmark tech, I am going to ship my extra large paper weigth to lexmark and tell all my customers (i work in electronics retail) to never buy a lexmark printer.

Lexmark x83 broken cover by pcbullpen (3/10/06 9:41 PM)
OK, I managed to get one of these beasts to print well after dealing with the striping & blurring listed above, but then I also managed to break the cover off, snapping the hinges. Anybody know where I could find a cover? Any of you guys given up on the printing part and still have one lying around? The Lexmark site doesn't even acknowledge the existence of the x83....
hey, im having the same problem, and i cant seem to understand what is going on. did you ever find a solution. my black and color both wont print and it says that they are full cartridges, which i have tried several of. do you have any suggestions?
Re: Lexmark x83 printing problems by blalsfj (3/12/06 3:01 PM)
argh this is terrible i did that menu 10 times test, with the maintanence and still nothing printed for that test both cartridge levels are full, yeah, the last anonymous, i have the same exact problem
I have had my Lexmark X83 for years and have had the encoding strip replaced just after wartt. expired. It has printed rheems and rheems of paper/pages. But it just quit it will not power up. Assumed it was the power supply purchased another one but same same "O". It does not say word one or even make a noise. Lexmark has helped me before to do trouble shooting but for some reason I can't seem to find the right email address for "repair". Any one have any idea's???? I did not know so many had all these problems.
Thank you so much for this download info.! I didn't know what to do when my printer did not work. I did not know you had to download your printer stuff to your computer. THANKS AGAIN!!!
If anyone is wondering the cause of the X83 Scanner lock, here goes
The original firmware shipped with the X83's had no power saving device for the scanner motor. Thus, the motor was always on.After several months of this, the motor would get hotter and hotter, and eventually, melt itself into the plastic. I doubt anyone at Lexmark will tell you this. However, for a while lexmark was urging anyone with a X83 to upgrade their firmare to the latest version (which is on lexmark. com) as preventitive medicine.
Despite this being a known error, lexmark will not recall any printer. To this date, no lexmarks have ever been recalled, despite one catching fire in a 10 year olds bedroom (that they know of)
I can't get my Lexmark X83 printer to work. I purchased this one at a good price and put up until I was ready to use it. I pulled it out about 6 months ago and could not get any power so I figured something was wrong with the plugs. I just purchased new plugs and no power...Any ideas?
just click and download, i ve one myself and the only thing is: never remove the 3 startup items in msconfig !!1 then the problems will start soon :) mail me if this still is not sufficient 4 u
Horrible, i would like to reset the whole printer, it is not lined up properly, trust me not my fault. I have also been through 8 cartridges, 4 black, 4 colour in 1 year. This machine sucks, i will never purchase a crap mark product again. I wish i would have bought it at Wal-Mart their return policy is great, but the problem is i don t even want a new one!!!! I took this to A pawn shop they offered me 2.50, thats right 2 dollars and 50 cents, that is what i should have payed for it brand new!
We barely used this machine and somewhere along the line, it has stopped working altogether. When I connect the power cable, I get the following error messages: System Error 000 V5.75z ARM Error Press Power Key Unknown Error Press Power Key
Have uninstalled software, reinstalled, plugged and unplugged printer. I just emailed technical support, but I'm sure at this point, the warranty is up!
Thanks for the tip. After trying about everything else and about ready to trash the X83,My wife insisted I look for online help. For as we know TECH SUPPORT is virtualy not existent.I came upon your post.In desperation and thinking 'Yeah Right', I tried your trick.I had to clean them two or three times but each time printing improved, now working fine. Again, Thanks. But now I've got to listen to the wife and "I told you so."

My Lexmark x83 printer will not print colors, and shows an error message that the color ink is low. This is the third new color cartridge I've put in, but no luck. I did the self test on my Lexmark x83 as described in a previous post. The results are the test page printed out all black. Any suggestions or further instructions? Thanks, Pat
