 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (12/13/03 5:13 PM) reply | + / - | Your printer is an inkjet.
You say that it is possible to get a test print. Are you speaking of a test print initialed from the computer, or a test print that is initiated by pressing some buttons on the printer?
If the test print is coming from the computer, can you print from any other other program?
Which email program are you using?
If your test print is the one coming from the printer, make sure that the cable between the computer and printer is connected properly.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (1/19/04 10:29 AM) reply | + / - | It probably means that an ink cartridge is nearly out of ink. I don't recall the DJ 800 series having an ink drop shaped light.

Solution 1. Turn the printer off. 2. Move the banner lever (next to the paper tray) up and down a few times. 3. Turn the printer on.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by ann (2/17/04 4:33 PM) reply | + / - | I have an HP 812C deskjet printer. (This doesn't even show up as my printer of choice under printers.) Today when printing pages off the internet, the print is either about 5 inches high or all squashed over to one side of the paper. Have no clue how to fix it. I can print a document off Word, but not on the internet. Anyone have any ideas?

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Denny Conway (2/17/04 4:53 PM) reply | + / - | Ann...FIRST: Try loading new Printer drivers directly from the HP web-site. Prior to downloading new printer drivers, you should open your "Control Panel Utility", then open the "Add/Remove Programs", then under "Install/Uninstall", highlight and REMOVE any old Printer Drivers that may already be installed. Sometimes the same older drivers can be corrupted and conflict with newer drivers. After removing your old printers and drivers, go to the HP WEB SITE and download the latest drivers for your printer and system. You can then go to this link: " http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/siteHome.jhtml;jsessionid=Q3DY24QHVPPRLQE XGR5UNZQ?reg=nam&cc=us&pagetype=sitehome&lc=en " on the Hp web-site and procede to download the needed printer drivers. When the "hp customer care" page opens, look under "get support for your product"; under #1. select a task, click-on "software & driver downloads"; under #2. enter product number, type-in "DESKJET 812C" and click-on the blue arrow [enter button] and then simply follow the directions on each of the following pages, to download the latest printer drivers for your series of HP Printer...SECOND: If that does not help, you might want to actually try a new Printer Cable, in case the old cable is starting to fail...JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: If you are printing off the Internet, you need to know that most sites are not printer friendly. Unless the site offers a printer friendly version to click on, you will need to go into your Printer Properties Utility and click on the "Paper Tab" and see if you can change the paper orientation to LANDSCAPE MODE, to be able to print everything on the page [from side to side on your paper]. Landscape allows you to print things that are not set up as printer friendly sites. Printer friendly sites allow your printer to print with out changing any printer settings and normally prints out in PORTRAIT MODE...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Denny Conway (2/18/04 9:18 AM) reply | + / - | Beverly: There could be several different areas and possibilities that may be causing that error condition. Here's some possible problems and you may simply have to eliminate these areas to try and find out just what is causing your printers problem: a wrong cartridge; a bad cartridge; an expired cartridge [check the age date on the cartridge or the box it came in]; possible dirty electrical contacts for the ink cartridge causing problems; sometimes even that the pull tape was not removed correctly; possible dirty Encoder Strip/Sensor Strip; possible DIRTY and or DRY Carriage Assembly causing problems [usually not simply no ink printing at all], or even corrupted Printer Drivers causing problems [download new drivers from HP.COM]. The only way to really eliminate a possible bad cartridge, even if it happens to be a new cartridge: actually replace it, or test it in another printer that uses the same cartridge and was working ok with its own cartridges installed. Unfortunatly, that is usually not practical, unless you know someone that has the same printer or uses the same cartridge in their printer...FIRST: Try cleaning the electrical contacts carefully and gently, with Distilled Water on Q-Tips or on a lint free rag. Its possible that the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge, or inside the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly, may simply be dirty. With your printer turned on as normal, simply open the Top Cover and the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly will move over to around the center position. With the print cartridge holder assembly in the approximate center position, simply unplug the power cord from the back or side of the printer. That holder assy will now easily slide back and forth by hand and you can easily remove the cartridges for cleaning. Using damp Q-tips [not wet or dripping], gently and carefully wipe off the copper colored electrical plates on the cartridges and the electrical contacts inside the holder assy. Use new dry Q-Tips to dry off all the electrical contacts after cleaning. Its best to use "Distilled Water", because it has less chemicals and minerals in it, than tap water and regular tap water can actually cause additional problems...SECOND: Although it's possible your printer has an electronic or mechanical failure, it is more likely the Carriage Assembly is simply DIRTY and or DRY, causing it to stick and make noises. That usually results in the printer loosing track of just where the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly is actually at. It then keeps telling that assembly to keep moving and can even cause it to slam into the end of the printer, when it gets real dirty and dry. That slamming can also result in the printers Printhead Alignment being thrown off. Try wiping the bar, all around the round shaft, with a lint free cloth. Also clean the outside of the metal bushings with Q-Tips, that the carriage bar passes thru, on both sides of the holder assembly. You can also use alchol on the cloth, if there is a lot of build-up on the carriage shaft/bar. Then lube the metal bar on both sides of the holder assembly, slightly with a precision oiler, not a spray lubrication. A drop or two of a Teflon based lubrication or Tri-Flo lube is best, but even a household 3 in 1 type oil, can be used. Manually slide the holder assembly back and forth to spread out the lubrication and wipe of any excess lube or blackish build-up that appears on the bar...Check for a couple of e-mails from me with some additional information...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Sandra Crow (2/18/04 2:08 PM) reply | + / - | My printer does not always print entire pages. Will sometimes print one complete page, then top of next page, the a piece of bottom on another page, omitting much material in between. It will also sometimes just go 'wacko' and print multiple pages with a heart, or some other small print at the top or bottom of pages or print full pages in what resembles Arabic. Please advise.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Denny Conway (2/18/04 2:42 PM) reply | + / - | Sandra: It sounds like either your Printer Drivers [loaded into your computer system] have become corrupted, or your Printer Cable is starting to fail. | Re: hp deskjet 640C by Margaret Forchio (2/18/04 3:55 PM) reply | + / - | My printer will print documents, but, it will not print an envelope! It acts like it wants to then the envelope gets stuck on its progress out of the printer, and the envelope is blank. What the heck?
|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Denny Conway (2/18/04 4:15 PM) reply | + / - | Margaret: Its possible that the Pick-up/Feed-in Rollers are dirty and or worn and causing problems. Because the envelope is so much thicker and different stock, its harder to feed-in correctly. Sometimes you can even hear strange noises as the paper starts to be pulled in, but thers no way for me to really know. Have you checked the specifications in your Users Manual/Owners Manual, to be sure that your printer is designed for envelope feeding. If it is, then I would suggest cleaning the rollers with a Rubber Roller Cleaner/Rejuvinator and see if that helps. Some of the best Rubber Roller Rejuvenator that I have ever used, is available in a can: Price = $10, Shipping = $6 ($8 International), from http://fixyourownprinter.com/sp0.html. It is also available as a Rubber Roller Rejuvenator Pad, which is cheaper to purchase: One pad soaked with rubber restorer, enough to fix several printers and simple directions for use. The price: Send two dollars and a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Laser Service, 1620 Aviation Blvd., Redondo Beach, CA 90278. International customers add another dollar and skip the stamp. See info page at " http://fixyourownprinter.com/kkx3.html "...Good Luck! Denny Conway...P.S. Temporarily, you can clean those rollers with water on a rag, just for testing and see if cleaning helps. If it does, then order the Rubber Roller Cleaner.

I have used a 16 to 1 mix of distilled water and "simple green" cleaner successfully. I rough up the rollers with one of those 3m green kitchen scrubbers. Works like a charm.
That $2 roller sheet/strip sold on this site looks like an excellent follow up to cleaning...I just haven't needed one yet. (see printer repair kit: HP)

I reconnected my printer and the computer recognizes it as a deskjet 810c. The computer then searched for a driver and could not find one. I then went to HP'S web site and downloaded their driver for the 810c/812c and when I try to run the install for the usb connection, it tell me to click next, and when I do click next, the whole install page disappears. So HP says that I have the correct driver, and my computer says that I have a printer, I just can't seen to get the two together to make my printer work. Anyone have a clue? I sure don't.

Today I was printing a Word Document and the IJ thing got stuck over the Right handside, before that itt made an ungodly grinding noise. The document did not print and the paper is stuck under the roller very tightly and I can't get it out. I turn it back on and just the loud grinding noise happens and it tells me I have a problem, also when I go into the printer queue, it tells me there are no jobs queued, so I can't purge. HELP ME!! I use multiple printers and on occasion I accidentally send the wrong print job to the 812c. When this happens, I'm forced to let the bad print job run its course, which takes lots of paper and ink as it tries to figure out what to do with printer codes for a different printer (we do recycle paper from the last bogus job). I've tried power cycling, forcing another print job, but to no avail? Got any tips on how to kill "Christine the Printer?!" Rick

 | Re:Printer rollers needing cleaning by bdbonner (3/15/05 10:02 AM) reply | + / - | Denny, or someone
Can you describe the 'cleaning' process to clean off these rollers? Seems [from the suggested cures] that rather than rubber wearing out, there is an ink buildup that you are essentially washing off. How do you do that? And with the scrubby, how to you get to all the surfaces? Pretend to print w/o paper? Or lots and lots of times so you get all the surface? OR is it just the surface that you can see? When you are using the Simple Green solution or the spray, how do you get to the areas that aren't immediately visible? Is there a way to get the roller assembly to freely roll for this operation?
I am not afraid to tackle this [at one point in my past had a job repairing office machines], and think I will like the outcome, just not sure how to make this work without getting gunk all over or making things worse.
Wanted to get advice from folks who've done this already. Can post or send privately.
Thanks, Barbara b.bonner@att.net

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (3/15/05 10:34 PM) reply | + / - | Remove the rear access door and clean the rubber feed rollers with a damp cloth. Using the rubber rejuvenator sold on this site is generally a better fix. The rollers visible when the cartridge access door is open typically don't cause feed problems. Its not convenient to clean them without partially disassembling the mechanism. I don't bother unless I'm doing a complete refurb.
The feed rollers can be rotated buy hand. Some resistance is normal. They cannot be be removed unless the case is removed.

It goes through the motions of printing (takes a page, the head moves back and forth) but the page comes out blank or with a couple of very thin lines. When I go to printer properties and say Print TEST PAGE, it prints a GREAT test page no problem. I have tried deleting and reinstalling the printer and driver. I have tried restarting the print spooler. I have tried printing directly to the printer, and nothing seems to help. | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (3/17/05 7:27 PM) reply | + / - | Some qestions 1. Are you printing text or graphics? 2. Have you tried printing from more than one application? 3. Have you tried the printer on a different system? 4. Have you scanned for viruses and spyware with up to date definitions?
|
 | Re: Re: hp deskjet 812c by Anonymous (3/17/05 7:36 PM) reply | +1 + / - | Thank you so much for your response.
I'm trying to print text right now (but have printed both text and graphics from this printer sucessfully before).
Tried printing from Notepad, Word, Wordpad and IE, --same result.
Unfortunately, I do not have a different machine to try it on.
The printer stopped working in December. I have anti-virus software enstalled, and have scanned for spyware since--the machine seems to be clean (knock on wood:)).
Back in December I emailed back and forth with HP Support, and they suggested all the stuff I have listed in the previous post, but with no luck. Then I gave up, and now I'm trying to get it working again. Have since installed SP2. But it seems like there are no new drivers for this printer.
Thank you very much for your help.

|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (4/26/05 10:40 PM) reply | + / - | Buy a new computer? Whoa! Since you get good printouts from other software, check for viruses and spyware as a precaution. Uninstall Acrobat Reader and then go to the Programs folder and delete any Acrobat folders that may have been left behind. Reinstall Acrobat Reader. If that doesn't solve the problem, consult a computer technician.
Microsoft offers a free antispyware software download.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (6/10/05 10:03 AM) reply | + / - | Blot the color cartridge(s) priint nozzles on a damp paper towel. You should see yellow, mangenta, and cyan. Assuming there is ink in the cartridge, some people have made them work by soaking the print nozzle area in hot water or by using a vacuum cleaner. Sometimes, even with ink present, a cartridge can be defective.
|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Maryellen (6/10/05 10:43 AM) reply | + / - | Tried cleaning the print nozzle with alcohol saw a little yellow but still only prints magenta.
|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Maryellen (6/14/05 9:27 AM) reply | + / - | Some one mentioned it may be the printer ribbon perhaps not getting power to the other color's pins. How do I check that?
|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (6/14/05 9:44 AM) reply | + / - | There is no formal documentation concerning voltages or anything else concerning the carriage. The odds favor a cartridge problem. To eliminate a potential problem, clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol.
Blot the cartridge nozzles on a damp paper towel. If you do not see yellow, magenta, and cyan, the cartridge has a problem. Either the a color(s) is exhausted or the cartridge is defective.

|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Stephen (7/9/05 9:32 PM) reply | + / - | Are these checks from a new package? Or have they been sitting around a while?
Has it been humid or dry in the area where the unprinted checks are stored?
Problem could be:
Edge welds Humidity or static Bad or dirty separation pad
Bend the pile of checks in to a "U" shape before putting them in the printer, this will help if they have edge welds.
Riffling the edges can put a static charge on the paper, refer to previous paragraph if you have an urge to riffle.
The separation pad is opposite the middle roller, you can find it by removing the back panel, note that some of what look like rollers are actually guides, then rollers all have a rubber surface.
Clean pad with water or rubber rejuvinator, NO alcohol.
While you are working on the printer lubricate the carriage shaft with a plastic safe lubricant, many Techs use tri-flow, NO WD-40 allowed. This will help keep your carriage belt from breaking.

|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Stephen (edited 3/17/07 11:37 AM) reply | + / - | The Blot Test will probably show you that one of your colors is not printing.
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/search/forums?f=&q=blot+test+color+st
Pink flu is how some describe the problem you are having, the blot test is used to diagnose pink flu.
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/search/forums?f=&q=pink+flu
To sum it up you probably have a bad color cartridge, but you may be able to get it working.
You can also use the paint program that comes with windows to test your printer.
Open paint>>Draw 3 2 inch circles with the circle drawing tool, (or squares if you like)>>fill one circle with Yellow with the fill tool>>fill the next with cyan, or as close as you can get to cyan, (light blue), fill the last circle with magenta>>print the page you just created.
The color in one of the circles will almost always be off, streaky or missing.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (9/3/07 10:53 PM) reply | + / - | Both cartridges have to be installed and recognized as good whether they have ink in them or not. If you are getting a cartridge error, clean the cartridges and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol. This may get printer to go through the motions of printing even if no ink is applied to the paper. If the printer will simulate printing, it will almost assuredly print when new cartridges are installed.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (9/15/07 9:52 PM) reply | + / - | It may be old but it uses one of HP's most reliable print mechanisms.
Go to a store that sells computer accessories and buy a printer USB cable. If you are not familiar with hooking up USB cables to printers, go to page 18 of the manual linked below. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/bpd07116.pdf
You don't need to do anything to make the printer work other than hook it up if the computer is running Windows XP or Vista. Either one will automatically install the correct software.

I still get no yellow. I've tested it with color bars and the other two colors work fine. I've tried cleaning the contacts on both cartridges and in the carrier. There has been no abuse or damage. Is there anything else to try before giving up on it?
|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (10/3/07 6:19 PM) reply | + / - | Verify that ink can flow from the cartridge(s) by blotting the print nozzles on a damp paper towel a few times for two seconds. You should see all of the colors (yellow, magenta, and cyan) flowing freely. If you do not, in spite of ink being in the cartridge it is defective.
|
 | Re: Re: hp deskjet 812c by SteveG23 (10/3/07 6:41 PM) reply | + / - | Thanks, Bert; that should have been obvious from when I cleaned it. With a dry paper towel I only see magenta and blue; with a distinctly damp one I get all three colors, but distinctly less yellow, and just a trace on the old cartridge. IIRC, in the past I've always seen all three colors clearly even with a dry paper towel. (Yes, I'm using very soft ones, not to damage it.) Looks like maybe I'm the victim of an unkind coincidence. I'll try returning it to the store.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by parame vyoman (10/29/07 8:13 PM) reply | + / - | I have an old hp deskjet 812c, has worked fine for some years. Has always been connected to the same computer - Clamshell iBook G3 running Mac OS 9.2.2. Recently I switched the printer cable over to an iMac G4 running Mac OS X.3, and it printed fine, a Word color doc. When I switched it back to the Clamshell, it also worked ok at first. But now I'm having trouble printing from either computer. On the Clamshell I get error message -50. I looked it up online: 'param Err - error in user parameter list'. I ran Norton disk doctor, + reset the PRAM (since it's 'parameter ram' and thought could be related...?). After that, when I tried to print from Clamshell the printer began responding + green light flashed, but then stopped + same error -50. On the iMac G4, the error message says 'Opening Printer connection failed: Unable to open the printer connection'. This happened last week + I've turned off printer + shut down/unplugged both computers in between, unplgged USB printer cable, tried a different cable etc, but still won't work. I just tried unplugging the printer itself from the wall, + when I connected it to the iMac G4 again, it actually printed a short b/w doc in TextEdit. But when I tried to print a 2nd time (color pdf), I got the same iMac error message as before. It doesn't seem to be the cable, and if it's happening with both computers it may not be the driver (?) Did something in the printer just get corrupted by switching it back + forth? Or just that it's an old printer + eventually something breaks down, + I need to get a new one. Thanks so much for any advice and help.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (1/15/08 9:24 PM) reply | + / - | Del Law
I should have been more specific. I have never been able to bring a Deskjet back to life that had a fatal error, that is without spending more that the value of the printer. Get a new printer. If you are an Ebayer try selling it for parts.
Paul Smeton
To verify that the problem is with the cartridge blot the print nozzles on a damp paper towel a few times for two seconds. A good cartridge will show yellow, magenta, and cyan flowing freely.
Depending on the operating system, there should be a nozzle cleaning utility in the Printer Tool Box or the printer Properties. If not try soaking the print nozzle area of the cartridge in near boiling water. Don't submerge the nozzles more than 1/4".

I downloaded a Vista patch. I cannot print MS Word or Notepad documents. I have been able to print everything else. I have contacted Dell and they insist that it is not their problem, to contact HP. HP now show no Vista patches. Any suggestions?
|
 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (4/5/08 9:06 PM) reply | + / - | There is no Vista compatible printer software on the disk that came with the printer.
Go to the Vista Control Panel and select Programs and Features, then uninstall any software that was installed from the disk, then close the Control Panel.
Unplug the printer from the computer. Go to the Control Panel and select Printers. If there is a Deskjet 812 icon right click on it and select Delete, then close Control Panel
Reconnect the printer to the computer using a USB cable. Vista should now automatically install the correct printer software.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by FatFrog (5/22/08 3:15 PM) reply | + / - | My HP Deskjet 812C has been working well on my Windows XP Version 5.1 with Service Pack 2. Due to a system problem, I needed to reinstall Windows XP. When I tried to install the driver from the CD that came with the printer, Windows warned that the driver was 'not digitally signed', and that the Windows Logo testing failed to verify its compatability. Further more, it warned that 'the continued installation may impair or destabilize the correct operations of your system either immediately or in the future'. So I abandoned the install, and went to the HP site looking for an alternative. I found the 812C driver download at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/siteHome?dlc=en&lc=en&cc=us. Following instructions on manual installation from the Control Panel, step 9 asks me to choose HP as the manufactuer, and then choose from a list of printers. Guess what, the 812C was not listed! And none of the other choices are compatible with an old printer like the 812C. And the instruction advises against installing the driver from the CD. Please, what's the next thing to do to make my faithful printer operational again? THANKS!!!

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by moe (5/22/08 3:21 PM) reply | + / - | I've ignored that warning a lot of times in the past and my computer still works fine. The Vista operating system is 100 times worse for warnings. I fixed that by turning the warnings off. My sanity is worth more than the remote chance my computer will get screwed up. I can always fix it or buy another one. They're obsolete as soon as you buy them anyway. Speaking of obsolete, Service Pack 3 is out now. So, my suggestion is to install it from the CD and don't lose any sleep over it. If it was good before, then there's no reason it's not good now, digitally signed or not.
|
 | Re: Re: hp deskjet 812c by Anonymous (5/22/08 3:54 PM) reply | + / - | What you suggested made sense. It worked fine before...why shouldn't it now? I have to admit though, those warnings from MS can be intimidating. Notice that it warns of not just an immediate problem, but future ones as well. They prey on our fear of sleepless nights trying to fix potentially pervasive system problems on our computer, introduced by an incompatible driver. Anyway, Moe, I oughta give the CD install a try. Thanks for your kind input. Anyone else who ignored the warning, installed from the CD, AND suffered no ill effects LONG TERM, please write to me and instill confidence in this novice user!

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (7/19/08 8:55 PM) reply | + / - | If the problem coincided with the cartridges being refilled I would suspect the cartridges. They don't have an infinite life. | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (10/7/08 8:25 PM) reply | + / - | Check the carriage drive belt. It may be broken. If so a replacement belt can be purchased on this website. http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/specials/parts/belts/S313
If the belt is okay unplug power from the printer, wait one minute, and replug the power.
If the carriage still fails to exit the service station, far right, then you will have to remove part of the case and investigate the problem, assuming the carriage is jammed in the service station. The service station is operated by a motor and two gears. Turn the larger gear to free the carriage.
Removing the right cover 1. Remove the T10 Torx head screw on the top of the right cover. 2. Pull up on the right cover to disengage it where the removed screw went through. 3. From the back, near the clean-out cover, insert a screwdriver between the right cover and the base coming in from the bottom. Pry up and the cover will release. 4. Do the same operation in the front near the paper tray and the cover will release completely and hinge to the right. 5. Release the clip that secures the switches to free the cover from the printer.

After I did all of the above, I sent a test page to the printer and it printed in magenta but it worked find other than that. I thought that perhaps the black ink cartridge was out of ink and it defaulted to the color ink cartridge.
I replaced the black ink cartridge and sent a page to it for printing.........the printer started printing special characters at the bottom of the paper in black and kept feeding paper in as fast as I could put it in the paper tray. After having gone through many many sheets of paper, I disconnected the power and the USB cable and deleted all print jobs from the print queue using the control panel.
I reconnected everything and now the printer will not even appear to recognize a print request. All the lights are on an no error messages appear. The print job is in the queue but no print. When I open the door to the print cartridges, the cartridges slide to the middle and just sit there. I have reinstalled the driver, reset the cartridge, removed all tape etc. from the new cartridge............nada........
Anyone got a clue as to what is going on?????????
Help

The only driver available is included with Windows XP. Uninstall whatever you downloaded and go to the web page below for instructions. http://h10025.www1.hp.com

 | Re: Re: hp deskjet 812c by Anonymous (2/16/09 3:24 PM) reply | + / - | Actually I have a HP 722C deskjet, but similar problems seen with the 812C in this forum. My printer suddenly stopped printing yellow also. I did all the usual things - checked connections, drivers, cleaned contacts, changed cartridges. I figured it was 10 years old and had some sort of internal failure. So I bought a new Canon color printer. Guess what? It won't print yellow either - fresh out of the box! This is more than just a coincidence and points to a problem on my Compaq Presario 2100 series laptop. What could be on my computer that would prevent yellow from being printed? I didn't do any installs other than the usual antivirus and windows updates. Ideas?

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by oldmaples (2/16/09 4:54 PM) reply | + / - | Deskjet 812C - I have 2 problems first one is, I print a lot of 8x10 B&W photos in landscape format and I am unable to create equal margins on L & R sides or if in portrait format that would be top & bottom margins.
Second problem is that Win XT does not recognize the HP 212c printer only the 810c the so I am using the 810c driver but every time I boot up I get a "new hardware notice"- I have tried listing as an 812c but still get that agravating "new hardware" notice. Also - just an added comment - I am looking at a box with 8 #23 Hp color cartridges all out of yellow! This represents over $250 in cartridges used over 50% to print B&W photographs. What kind of a scam is HP running ? For over a year I notice the internet is loaded with complaints of HP carts running out of yellow! Why haven't they corrected this problem? I have 2 812c printers a dl45 Office Jet and since 1999 have spent HUNDREDS of $ in HP ink cartridges mostly that run out of yellow. I would be glad to join in a class action suit against HP. - has anyone started one yet? Any help or comments will be greatly appreciated . Thanks

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (2/16/09 8:08 PM) reply | + / - | When printing in the landscape mode the left side of the photo becomes the top margin the right the bottom margin. From the specs below taken directly from the user guide it can be seen that the minimum margins the printer is capable of are not equal. Your only option if possible in your program is to adjust the top margin to equal the bottom margin. That may seen like wide margins but it is your only choice working within the limitations of the printer. (You can always manually trim the margins.) Top: 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) Bottom: 11.7 mm (0.46 in.)
I assume that you are allowing XP to auto detect the printer. Instead, manually install the printer using Add Printer in Printer and Faxes (listed in the Control Panel).
I've noticed the 'problem' ever since I began using color HP inkjet printers. Not defending HP, but assuming that they put equal amounts of yellow, magenta, and cyan in their cartridges, there may be a logical reason. Common colors like red (magenta combined with yellow) and green (cyan combined with yellow) require yellow to create them. Bottom line: There is likely a statistical probability of using more yellow. Unless HP can be induced to change the distribution of ink in their cartridges, the only option is to use models that have a separate cartridge for each color.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (3/1/09 4:22 PM) reply | + / - | Any error light flashing is going to shutdown printing until the problem is solved. Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and carriage with a cotton swab and alcohol. Some of your frustrations may end if you gave up on trying to 'milk' the last milliliter of ink out of the cartridges.

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Anonymous (10/7/09 6:38 PM) reply | + / - | My printer is printing majenta ink only. I inserted new ink cartridges (black and color),made sure the tape was off of the printheads. Tested, cleaned, aligned, primed and still it prints only majenta. Since the problem is the same both before and after installing new ink cartridges I think it's not the cartridge... any ideas? Thank you!

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Bert (10/7/09 9:16 PM) reply | + / - | Verify that ink can flow from the cartridge(s) by blotting the print nozzles on a damp paper towel a few times for two seconds. You should see all of the colors (three-color cartridge: yellow, magenta, and cyan) that are supposed to be in it flowing freely. If you do not, in spite of ink being in the cartridge it is defective.

 | Re: Re: hp deskjet 812c by Anonymous (10/8/09 1:49 PM) reply | + / - | thanks Bert. I tried this and it seems that my black ink should be working, lots of ink on my damp paper towel. The empty cartridge does not have ink flow at all, so it's a good control.
I'm going to get another cartridge however, and try that to see what happens. And if there are other ideas out there, I'll try them out. Thank you!

 | Re: hp deskjet 812c by Anonymous (1/21/10 9:16 AM) reply | + / - | I just purchased a new iMac and now my printer will only print one line of gibberish on multiple sheets no matter what I try to get it to print; this includes test pages. This only happens with the new computer. I tried downloading and installing new drivers and it doesn't seem to do anything. The driver that is selected is a default driver in the Mac and starts with a G and even after installing drivers from the hp website the default driver is the only option available for the model in the selection box. I hope I don't need a new printer, This one has done so well for so long!
Thanks, David
