I have an HP Psc750xi printer and am receiving a error message: "scanner failure. Turn printer off and then on".
I have contacted HP and they told me it sounds like a hardware problem. I have tried to find out information regarding this problem but have not succeeded. I have also noticed that when I try to copy it goes into the warm up mode but then gives a message that there is an error.
Also, where would I get repair parts or a schematic for the printer?
Thanks in advance Bob
Any help would be greatly appreciated in fixing this problem.

HP does not supply schematics and as far as I can tell, the scanner assembly, P/N C7296-60002, is no longer available. I believe that the same scanner is also used in the PSC 950 and there have been a lot of posts concerning scanner problems. Bottom line: any spares have probably been consumed. Do a search on Google and you may find one.

My problem is the same as Bob Drciolla on 12 12-03 what do I need to do. Some times I get on the computer under printer and just keep pushing buttons and it will work again but I have know what I did to get it to work and then the next time I need to copy something it blinks scanner failure. I can copy anything off the computer.

There might be help!!! I had this problems with a HP PSC 950 and solved it by cleaning! Not only the topside of the glass, but the mirrors inside. I found this link: forums.us.dell.com which helped me a lot with my PSC 950. (Thanks to XPLORNAZ!)
Good luck!

My problem was the same as many: upon initialization, the g85xi reported "scanner failure, turn off and back on." I contacted HP, paid the $30 and after standard restarts, was told that I faced a "hardware problem," unrepairable and offerred to sell me a refurb.
I followed the threads having to do with similar problems and decided to attempt a fix through cleaning and lubricating the gears and belt. I removed the top cover (pry out the long hinge pin and remove the two springs, paying close attention to their position.) I removed the overlay cover containing the scanner glass. (Remove two torx screws revealed on left and right rear top when cover removed, then release plastic spring catchs on left and right behind and beneath the control panel. The overlay and glass will lift off.)
Having revealed the scanner mechanism, I discovered the blue belt was loose and would not engage. Upon close inspection, I found that the tension spring at the end opposite the drive motor was laying free. The plastic stud attached to the frame had broken off. I replace the stud with a plastic insert and small sheet metal screw and reattached the tension spring. The belt visably tightened. I lubricated the gears and the slide and reassembeled the printer cleaning everything I could as a I did so. I reconnected the printer in accordance with the "quick start" instructions, powered up and the scanner failure report was gone. I printed, copied and scanned and, so far, the thing is operating well.
Many thanks to all who contibuted to the prior problems, and good luck.

For a while I could print with my HP PSC 750, but I had great trouble copying or scanning. I THINK the problem was related to the Norton firewall. For a while I seemed to be able to copy or scan only if I first disconnected from the internet. Recently my problems got worse, affecting my email, so I spent time with the Symantec knowledge base and (painful waiting) time on the phone with Symantec, and now I think that my firewall settings are correct. I just tested my printer by successfully copying a page and scanning a page, without taking the precaution of disconnecting from the internet. Everything worked!
I chose a happy-face icon for this posting, but I would have preferred to use a fingers-crossed icon.

Check the light bulb to see is it getting dark on both sides, if definitely, replace one, if not, try to clean it and all the mirrors inside the black box.
Re: scanner failure - HP 7140xi clean platten by rgleason (1/5/07 2:57 PM) reply
HP Offficejet 7140xi HP7110 HP7130 Fix Intermittant Scanner Errors, by cleaning the underside of the scanner glass after trying reboot and cleaning outside of platten. How to remove the scanner glass and plastic housing on an HP OfficeJet 7140xi, 7110 or 7130. -Ah finally I figured it out. So heres the summary on how to gain access to the underside of the scanner glass.
1. Disconnect everything. Strip to bare bones. 2. Take ADF off by pulling two black plastic tabs and lifting ADF off carefully, dont worry about the cables there is a connector in the hinge bracket. Dont take out the plastic pins they should stay in. 3. Undo the torx screws on the top back, also in the wells, taking care to retrieve those with a needle nose or they will disapear in a hole at the bottom. 4. Carefully remove the long slender glass at the left end of the scanner run and put it somewhere safe. You could try to clean using this slot but it would not be as easy a job. 5. Undo all the torx screws on the underside except the one in the middle where I think the motor for the scanneer is located. 6. You can carefully pry off the control panel cover, but you dont have to. 7. To remove the Lift panel from the shaft and springed "stay up mechanism, lift the two clips on the backside and slide the panel out. 8. The that gives access to the single front middle torx screw way up there (on mine it was on the left, but it could be on the right, next to either side of the clip, on the underside of the glass plate and plastic frame, turn the springed mechanism up so the torx driver goes through the hole and then find the torx screw and unscrew. 9. Then clean with alchol and windex leaving not lint. Replace with clear single strength window glass if the underside has wear marks. Make sure end strip is clean. 10. Put it all back together.
WHY? I am doing this because we get intermittant scanner failures, it is getting worse, and everything I read says that I should clean the dust and grim off the inside although it looks preety clean to me except one slightly dirty line in along the middle of the scanner path. I have cleaned the inside of the printer, the rollers, the excess ink buildup in there, with clear water and q-tips, also I have rebooted and reset the machine in acord with other instructions. I have tried every else except replacing the board, as some have done, but the scanner error does not occur all the time so it is not total failure and likely not the board in my opinion..

I forgot to say how to disconnect the scanner jacknife support arms. Pull the metal pins out, or release the bottom shaft clasp, by using a small screwdriver to pry.
What I described above seems to have worked, but it is really too early to tell. The scanner works nicely now (no errors yet). I cleaned the underside of the platten and got some unnoticeable film of black dust. Cleaned it with windex and lint free rag about eight times. I cleaned the mirror with about 8 q-tips and windex, and found some slight black on the q-tips. Hope that was the problem.
Also found a corner of a document stuck under the edge and wondered if the white corner was causing mis-readings. I dug it out carefully with an exacto knife. Then cleaned the platten glass.
Once you know how to get to the underside of the scanner glass platten it does not take long to do. I left the middle front screw from the underside out, so I could clean more frequently. It does not seem to affect strength much with careful use.
By the way I cleaned the 4 main rollers with water and dry rags, lots of ink on them, but it was not apparent.
I also vaccumed the entire unit and cleaned it up. Computers do not like dust.

Had the stupid 'Scanner Failure' message, but the people I got it from said that it had worked fine until the last few weeks. Light was still coming on, and the scanner is right above my heater vent, so I know that the thing most likely had an ambient temp above regular room temp.
Then I started looking at the device, and noticed that the 1/2" on the beginning end(Exactly where the light illuminates) of the white panel on the scanner lid was FAR more yellowed than the rest of the backing plate, I set in a piece of thick cardstock paper...
Presto!! Everything went away!!
It seems like I basically had to 'White Balance' the scanner. I haven't had any new faults yet after a week, and have had a few successful scans...
Also, don't write HP off... I think it was just a fluke that I tried THIS fix, and it DEFINITELY isn't something I would have expected from someone who hasn't worked in the industrial printing and scanning business as an end user.

Mikey: Thanx a million! I've read all the forums on my 950xi which had the classic "warming up" problem. After all the complex fixups (disassemble, clean glass and mirrors) download new drivers, reset with #6, yatta, yatta, yatta ...) YOURS WAS THE SIMPLE SOLUTION THAT WORKED! Just one small strip of my super-white shipping label over the yellow overcast ... and this cursed/blessed machine works perfectly. You are now dubbed "Master Geek of the (PSC) Universe."

HP d135 officejet has same scanner failure. Just loosening the screws to gain access to the light glass underside caused it to free up and start working, not sure why. I'll keep the screws out and see if it continues to work.

our 950 has been a pain in the XXX for years! I tried the white strip and it worked immediately! Obviously the scanner light has degraded the plastic hold down part and the machine cannot calibrate correctly as one responder mentioned. THANKS! If only HP was as helpful...

Thanks A million for the tips. I had noticed the "yellow bar", and had tried various things, but that was not all. Seeing how you all had torn it apart to fix it told me that I could try too. I went straight to the black box, took it out, turned it over, removed the cover, and saw that the mirrors, (all of them) had a white smoke looking film on them. (I do not smoke) I used 2 Q-tips and a little elbow grease, and it's working like a champ! Bless all of you for helping save Halloween 2008 in Lupburg Germany! bill williams USA Retired
