epson printer by bud housner (11/25/03 6:19 PM) + / -
I have an epson stylus c62 printer. When I attempt to print colored matter the print comes out all pink. Matter is legible but all pink. I have new cartridges installed.

Re: epson printer by Wes (11/25/03 6:44 PM) + / -
Try running the head cleaning utility a few times. Some times when you change the ink cartridges the ink still remaining in the print head dries out.

Running the head cleaning utility will often clear the dirid out ink.

If you need to completely clean the print heads you can buy the cleaning kit from here http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kea0.html

I hope this helps,

Wes

Bud: Its possible that you may even have a bad ink cartridge, especially if its a Non-Epson Ink cartridge. Its also possible that you might have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], there's just no way for me to know. If you run a "Nozzle Test" and all the nozzles are not firing/open, then its possible that they may be actually clogged, or even that the "Printhead Assembly" may be damaged or failing. At this point all you can really do is to start running sets of "Printhead Cleaning Cycles" and "Nozzle Tests" to see if you can get all those nozzles to open up and start firing again. Remember that every printhead cleaning cycle must be followed by a nozzle test, because the printer uses each nozzle test as a point of reference for the next cleaning cycle performed. You may have to run as many as 6 to 10 sets of tests, while trying to get all the nozzles to open up again. Unfortunatly all those tests waste a lot of ink and if after 10 sets of tests, the nozzles are still not open, then they are probably clogged. As Wes already stated, you can try using the "Printhead Cleaning Kit", available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com" and see if you can get those printhead nozzles to open up again. The KIT is around $10.00 plus shipping and it includes a syringe and some Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution. Epson fluid is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you use Epson inks...TECH NOTE: The "Printhead Cleaning Kits" sold by the "fixyourownprinter.com" printer repair site, say they are not designed for the "C80" printers. Although the kit IS NOT designed for the "C" series printers [such as the C60,C62,C70,C80 or C82] or the NEWER SERIES of Epson Ink Jet Style Printers, the fluid and syringe can still be used in the same way. The syringe and Epson Fluids that come in the kit are still the best thing to try. The main difference is the instructions for the FELT PAD/CAP ASSEMBLY. The "C80/C82" series and newer "C" series printers, use a different style "cap assembly" that does not use a felt pad, so you have to ignore that portion of the instructions...REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force. Damage can even occur when you are using the printhead cleaning kit method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. Sometimes with too much force, the nozzles can be damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a couple of days, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to disolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never disolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the small Epson Ink Jet style printers...Good Luck! my 1280 epson was diagnosed as needing a new ink pad. can i obtain this part and install myself? I am good at repairs

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (11/26/03 11:08 AM) + / -
Nancy: It would be nice to know which model of Epson Printer that you were talking about...Just because black or color is not printing, does not mean that the ink cartridge is empty. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer and its possible that you may have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], or the "Printhead Assembly" may even be CLOGGED...AT ANY RATE, HERES HOW TO REPLACE AN INK CARTRIDGE WHEN YOUR PRINTER IS NOT IN AN "ADD INK CONDITION": If the printer is not in an "add ink condition" then you normally can't use the buttons to replace the cartridges. You would have to trick the printer, by manually causing the assy to move over: FIRST STEP: With the printer powered on, in a ready condition, but with the paper removed, push the "paper button". Even with no paper loaded in the printer the print head/cartridge holder assy unlocks and starts to move to the left. You must quickly unplug the power cord. This of course shuts the printer down with the print head assy unlocked. If not done quickly, the printer will go into a paper error condition and you will have to try it again. With the top cover door open, you can them manually slide the holder assy left, or right and can then remove the cartridge you want to replace. SECOND STEP: Only remove "ONE CARTRIDGE AT A TIME" and DO NOT install the new cartridge yet. Once you remove one cartridge, close that cartridges top locking cover, into its normal locked position [both top covers would now be closed, but one cartrige would be missing]. THIRD STEP: Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer. The printer will go into an immediate "solid error/led light" for which ever cartridge is missing. STEP FOUR: Now when you press the ink button in for 3 seconds, the print cart holder assy will move over to the correct position, so you can open the top cover and correctly install the new cartridge. STEP FIVE: Once the new cartridge is correctly installed and the top cover is closed, into its locked position, you once again press the ink button. The printer now recognizes the new cartridge and goes thru "New Cartridge Initialization", which correctly resets the ink counter for the cartridge you just replaced. STEP SIX: If needed, you can now start all over at step # 1 and install the 2nd ink cartridge [best to do one cartridge at a time]...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Greg, You can try http://www.compassmicro.com/home.cfm or http://www.nationalparts.com/ and check with them. Compassmicro has a page where you can download a PDF file for your model and then you can email them and they will let you know whats available/price and so on.

The can look for the service manual and service program at http://www.2manuals.com

Good Luck,

Wes

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (11/26/03 1:59 PM) + / -
Greg...JUST SO YOU WILL KNOW: With out more information to go on, its hard to justify the diagnosis that you received...My first concern would be which "ink pad" was needing to be replaced and why. Was your printer diagnosed as needing to replace the felt ink pad [called "Cap Assembly"] under the Printhead Assembly, when its at its Home Position [the far right side]? I have never had to replace one of those [yet] and would question why it needs to be replaced. That felt pad seldom causes a problem by being covered in ink, but can be easily cleaned. There's usually no real wear placed on it, so it normally does not need to be replaced. The pad, the raised rubber ring around the pad and surrounding area, can be cleaned with a damp piece of lint-free rag, or damp q-tips. Because the pad seals to the bottom of the printhead assembly and because of the vacuum action that pulls ink out of the printhead nozzles and thru the pad, it will always be covered in ink. The cap assembly seals to the bottom of the printhead assembly by the raised rubber ring around the edges of that felt pad. It keeps the printhead nozzles from drying out when the printer is not being used, or turned off. Vacuum pulls ink out of the printhead assembly during the cleaning cycles, thru the felt pad and thru hoses to the "Waste Ink Pads". The most common problems are the springs under the pad holder assembly, being knocked off during servicing & cleaning [causes a loss of vacuum], or a hose coming off the bottom of that Cap Assembly [loss of pumping action and vacuum], or even a failure in the Pump Assembly itself [loss of pumping action and vacuum]...Now if your printer was diagnosed as needing those Waste Ink Pads replaced, it would normally be because either your printer was in a "Maintenace Error Condition" [all Led's/Lights, Blinking/Flashing], or because the pads were so full that they were leaking out the bottom of the printer. Normally those pads would never fill up to the point that they started to leak, without the "Internal Waste Ink Counter" first going off and causing those led's/lights to start blinking/flashing, which shuts down your printer. Now if someone happened to previously reset that Internal Waste Ink Counter and did not actually first replace those pads, that would eventually cause an ink overflow condition, which usually results in ink leaking out the bottom of the printer. You would normally know if your printer was previously in the "Maintenance Error Condition" and if somebody actually reset the printers "Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter", without first replacing those Waste Ink Pads...At any rate, you could probably do either pad/pads if you had a Service Manual to use for in-depth disassembly and troubleshooting [see the link provided by Wes]. Parts are available to order from your nearest Epson Authorized Service Dealer [can locate on-line at Epson.Com]...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I've heard that a portable travel type clothing steamer will unclog print heads. How would I remove C-82 head assemblies to try this? --Jay

Re: epson printer by Wes (12/5/03 8:56 AM) + / -
Using the print head cleaning soultion from here http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kea0.html is far easier than removing the print head. Steam will only remove the surface ink anyway you really need to have a cleaning solution flush the entire print head.

The steam will hot be of much help on an Epson. It might work on a HP style ink cartridge since those are soaked in hot water but I think it might not be enought for those either.

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Jay: Wes is right, but if you want to try, you will need to order a Service Manual to use for disassembly, reference, troubleshooting and possible printhead adjustments. Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (1/6/04 9:52 AM) + / -
Misty: As the Epson C41SX & C41SX were made for Latin America, I don't have a Service Manual and can't tell you much. Normally, most Service Error Conditions will come up on your Monitor's screen, telling you what the error/problem is. Usually when both lights are Blinking/Flashing its either a "Maintenance Request Error/Unknown Error", or a "Fatal Error Condition". You would probably need to try and find a Service Manual to purchase and download [if available], to be able to troubleshoot either problem and for possible disassembly and servicing. Anyone got Win2k Drivers for Epson Stylus Color 300

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (1/7/04 9:53 AM) + / -
Omberai: It looks like Epson Company did not produce Printer Drivers for your "300", for Win's 2K. You can see the available drivers at " http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCooki e=yes&oid=14431&infoType=Downloads ". Its up to the manufactor to produce the drivers and if you cannot get them from Epson, you won't be able to find them anywhere else. Both Epson and HP did not make drivers for some of their older products. They decided it would not be economical because of the limited amount of certain models still operating in the field. The only thing you can do is try other drivers to see if they will work on your Win's 2K, or load an operating system that there are drivers made for, or buy a different printer...Denny Conway

Noel: I'm not sure what you meant by "so i blew the ink outlet on the catridge tray", but if you used compressed air, its possible that you may have actually damaged the Printhead Nozzles. At this point, about the only thing you can do is try cleaning out the printhead nozzles to see if they will open up and print again. You might want to try using the Printhead Cleaning Kit, available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com", for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. Lis: You can delete your old drivers and download the latest available drivers from the Epson Home Page at http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/index.jsp ...As drivers are FREE, I usually recommend trying those first if you have a communication problem. Bad or corrupted drivers can cause many problems. "DEINSTALL" [remove] your old drivers/printer first and then go to the "EPSON.COM" web-site. Look under "DRIVERS AND SUPPORT" and then click-on "DRIVERS AND DOWNLOADS". Look under the "Ink Jet Printers" for your "Epson Stylus Color ___" [NOTE: you did not actually list your model of Epson Printer, so I cannot enter it for you in the example] and click-on it. Once the "DOWNLOAD PAGE" opens, read the INFORMATION to locate your particular SYSTEM [Win's 95,98,ME,2000.etc.] and then click-on it. Follow the directions and read all the available information concerning your systems driver downloads. Finally at the bottom of the page, click-on "Printer Software Installation for Windows ___ [Epson Printers]", or the "Download" option button. After the downloading utility opens, read the download information available, make your choices and complete the installation...Good Luck! Denny Conway...P.S. Re: epson printer by Harold aged 80 (2/23/04 3:23 AM) + / -
I have an Epson Stylus Color 300 printer.
I cannot get it to print. The ink indicator light is permanently on red. The printer window states "Printer is off-line". The ink status shows a full red bar. I have fitted a refilled Epson 300 cartridge. Multiple nozzle-cleaning cycles produce no change. What is wrong?

Re: epson printer by Wes (2/23/04 9:39 AM) + / -
The printer is not recognizing the ink cartridge (if only one light is on) or if black and color ink lights are on and the power light flashing it would be a fatal error.

Try reinstalling the ink cartridge a few times or replacing the cartridge.

I hope this helps.

Wes.

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (2/23/04 9:53 AM) + / -
Harold aged 80: If the Ink Light is on SOLID RED, then your printer is in an add ink condition. That add ink condition is actually an Ink Error Condition and is probably why you are getting that "Printer is off-line" message. Just to let you know: Your printer cannot actually tell if there is any ink in the ink cartridges, it uses an Internal Ink Counter to keep track of the ink used. When the ink light starts flashing, it is letting you know that it thinks the ink level is getting low. Once your printer thinks that the ink is almost out, it shuts down the printer and that FLASHING ink light turns a SOLID RED and will not allow any operation until the indicated cartridge is replaced. At this point all you can really do is to install a new ink cartridge correctly, which will perform New Cartridge Initalization and reset both the internal ink counter and thr ink levels. Check for an e-mail from me, with some additional information in that area...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson printer by Jim (3/2/04 10:52 AM) + / -
I have a Stylus Color 640. The ink status program does not reflect a new cartridge after a new cartridge is installed. Also, it will print only one or two good alignment tests after cleaning the nozzles then prints nothing - blank paper.

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/2/04 11:39 AM) + / -
Jim: If the Ink Error Light was not FLASHING or on SOLID, prior to installing the new ink cartridge, then your printer was not in an ADD INK CONDITION. In that case, your printer would not go thru New Ink Initialization, after you installed that new cartridge and would not even know that it was actually replaced. The printer technically has to be in an Add Ink Condition, before the ink cartridges can be replaced. At this point you would have to trick the printer, remove the previously installed cartridge, reset the printer and then install another new cartridge [see P.S. below and e-mails]. Check for an e-mail fropm me, that will tell you how to correctly trick your printer and why you need to install another new cartridge...Its also possible that your printer may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], but normally the most common problem is clogging of the Printhead Nozzles. A possible clog is probably why nothing is printing, after a couple of pages, unless you are using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges. Unfortunatly, Epson Ink Jet Style Printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com", at http://fixyourownprinter.com/kea0.html , for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again. If you want to see what's involved in print head cleaning, Wes has supplied a link that might help: " http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/printhead.html "...Good Luck! Denny Conway...P.S. The menu bar is on but when I want to print the Print icon is not responding, is not "lit" up like the other icons. What's wrong?

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/4/04 9:36 AM) + / -
Gerald: Yes, but just like I told MISTY, you will have to go on-line and purchase a Service Manual and or the reset procedure, to be able to correct your printers problem [info available in reply given to Misty]. You can go to "Richards PC Tips" at " pages.infinit.net " and see his info9 on how he repaired his C42UX with a Waste Ink Pad Error Condition. You can also check this link " http://www.wesesweb.web1000.com/wip.html " for "Waste Ink Pad Servicing" information on a C60 Printer, which is simular to your printer...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/4/04 9:39 AM) + / -
Gerlinde: It actually sounds like you may have a problem in your Computer System, rather than in your printer. Remove the Printer Cable from your printer and then turn it off for about 10 seconds or so to clear out any old DATA remaining from when it was connected to your computer. Then turn the printer back on and simply run its Internal Self-Test Page. If that test page prints out normally, then that would indicate that your printer is normally working ok. If your printer is working ok, then your problem could be in your Computer System/PC: bad drivers, bad printer cable, bad software, incorrect internal PC settings, possible hardware problems [parts problems], etc. If by chance no one else can help you, it might be because this is a Printer Repair Site and it sounds like you may need a Computer Person, rather than a Printer Repair Technician. I'm sorry, I can't really help you, but I do hope someone else replies, that might be able to help you with your computer or software problem...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Epson Stylus Color 640 stripping it's gear(s)? by Don (3/8/04 2:16 PM) + / -

After successfully printing a page, My Epson Stylus Color 640 made a very long humming sound before going into the "rest" (standby?) position. Then I couldn't turn it off for a long time. Now, when turned on, it makes an AWFUL loud gnashing, grinding and/or clunking noise, and is hard to turn off. Does this sound like something I could repair myself, or should I just buy a new printer?

It sounds like the carriage guide shaft is dry. But first check to see if there is anything blocking the carriage from it's full range of motion.

Next check the carriage guide shaft is dry or dirty. If it is try this link for instructions on how to clean and oil it. http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/glide.html

Hopefully is just needs to be cleanied and oiled. But you mat have a actual part/printer problem.

I hope this helps.

Wes,

Re: epson printer by Don (3/9/04 9:29 AM) + / -
Wes,

Thanks a million for your prompt and very helpful response!

Turns out the carriage shaft was pretty clean but dry as a bone! A little light oil...I actually used WD40 (liquid, not spray) and the problem was gone!

Thanks again. I really appreciate your advice. The clunking sounds were so loud (see my first post, above) that I really thought my printer might be a goner.

Don

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/9/04 10:09 AM) +1 + / -
Don...Just to let you know: Although WD-40 is an excellant lubricant and cleaner, it normally does not last long or work that well on Carriage Assemblies. A drop or two of a Teflon based lubrication or Tri-Flo lube is best. Its also better to lube the metal bar on both sides of the holder assembly, slightly with a precision oiler, not a spray lubrication. Sometimes a spray can get into areas it should no be and can actually damage the Printhead Assembly...A LITTLE ADDITIONAL INFO THAT MIGHT HELP: Theres a lubrication pad deep inside the Printhead Assembly and it can also get dirty and can leave a blackish build-up on the metal Carriage Bar/Shaft, even after you have cleaned the bar and normally after you have applied the lubrication to the bar/shaft. Once you have cleaned off that metal bar/shaft, then use Q-Tips to clean the copper or brass colored bushings that are on both sides of the printhead assembly, where the rod passes thru that assembly. The insides of the bushings are just as dirty, or worse than the outsides, but you cannot see them or actually clean them easily, except by applying lubrication to flush them out. There are also lubrication pads that are dirty and you cannot see them either. Center the printhead/print cartridge holder assembly approx in the center of the carriage rod. Using the lubrication you have choosen: Drop a couple of drops on the left side of the assy, about one inch away from the bushing. You need to go slowly with the application of the lube. What you want is for the lube to just start to run down the front side and the backside of the rod. When it starts to run down the rod, stop applying the lube. Quickly grab the assy and slide it to the left a few inches and then back to the right a couple of inches. Slide the assy back-n-forth several times, but just a few inches total. Now do the right side of the printhead assembly the same way. What you will normally see is some dirty, blackish looking build-up, start to come off onto both sides of the rod. This build-up is from the insides of the bushings and lubrication pad, where you cannot see them or even easily get to them for cleaning. Wipe off this build-up on the rod and on both sides of the printhead assembly, on the bushings outside edge, until no more blackish build-up comes off. That carriage rod should be clean looking, with only a slight amount of lube showing when you are done. Once you can only see clean lube on the rod, then slide the print cartridge holder assembly all the way to the left a couple of times and then all the way to the right a couple of times. You are spreading out the lube to all over the carriage rods surface area. Be sure there is not too much lube, because it will just attract foreign matter. If there is, then simply wipe it off, because you just want a lite coating on the clean rod...Denny Conway...P.S. You can check out this link, supplied by WES, to see different lubrications: http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/oil.html

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/9/04 2:32 PM) + / -
George: You will probably need a Service Manual to be able to get that top cover off correctly, but you can use the following link as a guide, but its on an Epson C60 printer: " http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/c60housing.html . I have not looked, but you can normally find most Service Manuals and or Service Adjustment Programs/Resets for EPSON Inkjet Printers, at www.2manuals.com (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 /- ) [OR] www.otd.com.ua. ...Good Luck! THANKS AGAIN! by Don (3/9/04 5:42 PM) + / -
WOW... YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING!

Thanks, Denny, for your very thorough followup on the carriage rod cleaning/lubrication issue. I had an idea that the WD40 wouldn't last, but it was all I had that was handy. To avoid overspray on the printer, I sprayed the WD40 into a medicine cup, and then applied it with a Q-tip. I'll get some of the better lube and do a complete job soon.

Thanks again for taking the extra time to cover my subject. Best regards to you and Wes,

Re: Epson Service Manual, and a Question by Don (3/10/04 2:32 PM) + / -

Thanks Denny,

The Epson Service Manual for my machine is very impressive - 212 pages! Lots of good info when/if I need it.

Separate question: How can I relate a printer's dpi specs to its image quality?
For example... my home machine (Stylus Color 640) claims a resolution of 1,400 x 720 dpi, yet photos and other .jpg files are mushy, coarse and grainy. At work, we have an HP Color Laserjet 4550 that only claims 600 x 600 dpi, and it prints the same images on the same paper stock as sharp and smooth (almost photo quality).
I notice that the new low-end Epson models claim a higher dpi count than much higher-priced HP and Canon inkjet models.
Is dpi any kind of good measure of image quality? Or do you just have to see the results and judge for yourself?

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/10/04 4:35 PM) +1 + / -
Don: There are some big differences involved when you are comparing your older "Epson Stylus Color 640" to a much newer "Hp Color Laserjet 4550". The Epson 640 is a much older technology and ink jet printers have changed a lot in the last few years, sometimes not always for the better [built differently now and much more disposable]. Not only is the HP 4550 a much newer technology, it is a completely different technology than an ink jet printer. Its really not even possible to compare a $200 [ /-]ink jet printer, with a $2000 [ /-] Color Laserjet Printer. The 4550 uses a powder type toner particle, rather than a liquid ink and that powder is actually fused/bonded to [melted onto/into] the paper with heat and pressure. You get a much better appearance because of that bonding of the powder toner to the paper, rather than simply air drying on top of the paper, like the liquid ink does. The upkeep costs are much higher on the HP Laserjet Printer compared to the Epson Ink Jet Printer. You are paying a lot more for the powder toner than the liquid ink, as well as the other supplies and internal parts that have to regularly be replaced on the HP Laserjet Printer, in comparison to your Epson Printer...Generally speaking, the higher the DPI Count, the better the resolution and the image quality, especially when using the correct inks or supplies. If you were to compare simular ink jet style printers, then you would get a better comparison. In the Printer Industry there is a big difference between the Epson Printers and most of the other printers. That difference is most notable when you are actually doing color picture prints using Photo Quality Paper and when actually using Epson Inks and Ink Cartridges in your printer. Most, if not all, of the other manufactors use thermal or bubble jetprint heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. Unfortunatly, Epson Ink Jet Style Printers are one of the few printers on the market that have so many problems with non-manufactors inks. Epsons use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers and correct Epson ink formulation is vital. Those printheads are one of the reasons that the Epson Printers make such quality color prints. The piezo-electric printhead gives an Epson Printer the ability to control the ink delivery in a more precise manner than all the other manufactors. Basically its because of Epsons "Micro Piezo Ink Jet Technology" and the ultrafine 4-picoliter ink droplets used in most of the Epson Ink Jet Style Printers, that most Non-Epson inks have problems working in the Epson style printheads. Of course on the other hand, those printheads are the same reason for the quality of the Epson Color Prints, that so many people rave about. No matter what anyone says, all blacks and colors are not the same. Printer manufacters do not make available their ink formulation and in most cases, the formulation is patented. Any difference in the ink formulation can clog the small printhead nozzles or damage other critical components. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair, so you can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. Epson has many different formulas just for its black ink, for all the different Epson Printers, let alone for their colored inks. Generally if you are using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges, or refilling your old cartridges, you are using the wrong ink for your printer and sooner or later you will have some type of problems, almost everyone does. Sometimes using the wrong ink, can actually damage the Printhead Assembly, so you are taking your chances by using Third-Party or Generic ink cartridges, or even by refilling your old cartridges. There are people that say they use non-Epson ink cartridges in their Epson Printer and have never had a problem. Unfortunatly, I have seen and read about the problems that Non-Epson Ink and Ink Cartridges have caused, so thats why I post this information. I do understand the differences in the costs of the non-Epson ink and ink cartridges, compared to the Epson ink cartridges and the choice is always yours to make...I guess what it really boils down to is what your needs really are. If you mainly do black and white text printing, with a little color printing sometimes, then you probably are better off with an HP Printer, or something simular to it. If you need to do a lot of high quality color photo prints, then the Epson line is normally a better choice. Epson Printers need to be used often [once a month or so at least] to keep the ink in their Printhead Nozzles fresh, so that it does not dry out and possibly clog. The main thing on any brand of printer is to stay away from the cheaper models [basically under $100], because they are basically thought of as disposable in the Printer Industry. Unfortunatly, quality is not what it was just a few years ago, but the prices have come down a long ways in those few years, which sort of explains where the quality also went. I guess the best thing to do would be to read the printer articles and comparisons that come out in some of the Computer Magazines and use their testing and reporting as a guide, if you are planning on buying a new printer in the future...Denny Conway

Could anyone help me? by Sam (3/15/04 11:04 AM) + / -
Hi there,

I have an Epson Stylus C62 printer. It works like a dream when attached to my partner's computer, but when I attempt to print anything with my comp, the printer slows down to a rate of about one page per 5 minutes, and my computer slows down to almost nothing - the cursor barely responds and any window i try to open or close takes about 3 minutes to realise I'm 'talking' to it. Initially the printer was fine, then it started doing this when I wanted to print in a landscape-orientated page. Now it's permanent.

I'm running windows 98, on an Evesham Voyager 5000 laptop. I have a pitiful 96 MB of RAM, and the comp tends to have 70-80% of that free at any given time.

I have no viruses, there doesn't seem to be anything in my task list that shouldn't be there, and i run spybot regularly.

I have the correct printer listed as 'default'. My ink is new, I have tried reinstalling the printer drivers from the original disk. Epson's troubleshooting site has 'no solution'. The only light flashing on the printer is the green 'recieving print job' one.

Any suggestions welcome - I'm going slowly mad here!!

Many thanks,

Sam.

Re: epson printer by Wes (3/15/04 11:24 AM) + / -
It sounds like something is running in the back ground. I would try going here http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ and downloading Ad-Aware and also get Pest Patrol from http://www.pestpatrol.com

Ad-Aware is completely free and pest patrol is a free demo but it will tell you if there is any spyware that spybot did not catch.

You can also go to http://www.pcpitstop.com and do a online test to see if is your system has any performance issues. In rare cases a highly fragmented hard drive can slow your computer down.

Other than that. Reload/update the drivers. Sometimes the drivers do get corrupted. and make sure you have a bi-directional printer cable. If you can try the printer cable your parter is using.

I hope this helps.

Wes.

Re: epson printer by Sam (3/16/04 12:16 AM) + / -
Hi Wes,

Thanks for your reply.

I have adaware already, but I will try pest patrol too. Went to PC pitstop a while back, but I guess it's worth trying that again.

My partner and I share a cable, so the problem doesn't seem to lie there.

Do you think it's worth installing drivers off the net, as opposed to from my disk?

Thanks again,

Sam.

Re: epson printer by Wes (3/16/04 12:28 AM) + / -
It's definately worth downloading the drivers from the Epson site. It will also help diagnosing the problem.

I wish you luck.

Re: Epson 900G problem by Anonymous (3/16/04 12:49 AM) + / -
My 900G is printing perfectly - colors are fine, no banding, dotting. The problem is there are black dots and roller marks on every print. I've had this happen in the past and wiping down the paper feed rollers (which have black ink on them) usually fixes this. This time I've cleaned and cleaned the rollers and it just keeps happening. How is the ink getting on there, and why? And can I clean this myself somehow?

Re: epson 900G problem solved! by Anonymous (3/16/04 1:21 AM) + / -
Thanks to your site archives! I finally found someone else who had the ink on the rollers problem I had. I used some compressed air and blew behind the printer assembly (?) part and then cleaned the rollers AGAIN - and Voila! it's clean! Thanks!

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/16/04 9:57 AM) + / -
Anonymous...Just to let you know: I'm assuming that the rollers you are talking about, are those small grey colored rollers, mounted into a normally white plastic holder/framework assembly. They are located inside the printer and basically just below and slighty behind where the Printhead Assembly travels back-n-forth during the printing process. Those small rollers are actually more of a pressure type of roller that helps feed the paper thru the printer during the printing process. The paper feeds between those small rollers and the solid platen roller just below them. When those rollers get ink on them, its normally caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair that sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side and backside areas of the Printhead Assembly. That build-up acts like a small paint brush and transfers wet ink to those small rollers, as the Printhead Assembly moves back-n-forth from the right to the left. Those small rollers then act like tiny paint rollers and roll the wet ink onto the paper as it passes below those rollers. Once those two areas are thoughly cleaned and then the small rollers are also cleaned, the problem will normally go away. Just in case those rollers are the ones causing your possible problem, check for a couple of e-mails from me that should help in that area...Good Luck! Denny Conway

any help is appreciated.

Re: epson printer by Wes (3/21/04 2:12 PM) + / -
You can turn the printer on and as the carriage moves pull the plug from the wall once the carriage has moved off of it's parked position.

Then slide the carriage over and replace the ink cartridge. Or you can use the SC service utility to have the program move the carriage to the ink replacement postion. You can doenload the SSC utility from here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

Replacing an ink cartridge tip. Have the new ink cartridge out of the package and the pull tab removed before you press the ink cartridge replacement button. Then quickly remove the old ink cartridge and install the new cartridge then press the ink button again to start using the new ink cartridge. This method will help prevent print head clogs because the print head is not off the cap assembly long enough to dry out.

I hope this helps.

Wes.

I stupidly used both colour & black cartridges which I had wrapped in gladrap for 2 or 3 weeks.
Both colour & black nozels were blocked. I ran head cleaning and nozel check & after about 10or 12 times and an empty ink tank succeeded in getting colour nozzel pattern OK & black nozel pattern 90%. Despite more cleaning attempts and a new black cartridge, blocked black ink nozels will not completly clear.I tried putting ink cleaning fluid into black ink cartridge space without success.

You might want to use a syringe and warm distilled water to flush the print head. Or use the print head cleaning kit from here http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kea0.html

If you want to see what is involved in using the kit you can try this link http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/printhead.html if that link does not work try http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/Printhead.html

Keep in mind that flushing the print heads out will usually take a few tries to completely clear the print heads. And inject the fluid/distilled water very slowly.

I hope this helps.

I use C62 with actual official epson T041. Everything seems to be fine. I was happily printing my DVD labels and everything went out fine.

One day, i decided to print as quality "photo" instead of "best photo" like i always do.

Ever since, it won't print out cyan ink anymore. I've run a few test, and cleaned too, but the cyan won't print out.

According to the monitoring status, there still has much Cyan ink as Magenta and Yellow.

Apart from cyan not being print out, nothing else seems to be unusual, no blinking lights, no error message. What should i do?

Thank you in advance.

Re: epson printer by Wes (3/31/04 10:28 PM) + / -
You might have a partially clogged print head but you might just be out of magenta. The ink monitor usually does not accurately reflect the individual ink remaining. At least that's my experience with the ink monitor. And certian photos will use more of a color or mix of colors than others.

If the ink supply is good then you can flush the print head using distilled water of the Epson print head cleaning kit from here http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kea0.html For info on how to clean the print hrad using the distilled water or the Epson kit try here http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/Printhead.html

Ink catridge problem by Lorraine Henders (4/16/04 6:07 AM) + / -
Apologies if this has been posted before but I haven't had any luck finding a solution. I have an Epson Stylus C82 and rather than pay the price for Epson replacement ink catridges, I purchased Longbow ink cartridges which apparently are suitable for the C82. However I can't get my printer to recognise these. I keep getting an error 'Installed ink catridges not recognized'. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get it to accept the Longbow catridges?

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (4/16/04 9:15 AM) + / -
Anonymous: That usually indicates either a failing or bad ink cartridge, or a clogged or failing Print Head Assembly. Try simply running sets of Print Head Cleaning Cycles and Nozzle Tests [up to 5 or 6] and see if it helps to correct those "Void Lines/White Lines". If not then you might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through the Home Page on "fixyourownprinter.com", at " http://fixyourownprinter.com/ ". When it opens, click-on Epson, under PRINTER REPAIR KITS. Then click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" and that page should then open correctly. The Epson Solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again. If you want to see what's involved in print head cleaning, Wes has supplied a link that might help: http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/printhead.html and he also suggests trying the SSC service utility form here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html...Good Luck! Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (4/16/04 9:27 AM) + / -
Lorraine: Thats one of the problems with using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges, they are not always recognized by your Epson Printer and some simply won't work at all. I'm sorry, but there's nothing that I know of that you can do to get your printer to accept a particular brand of ink cartridge, if it does not recognize the cartridge, or the Electrical chip that is installed on that cartridge. Although some Generic and Third-Party ink cartridges seem to work better than others, they are all the wrong ink to use in your Epson Printer. Epson Ink Jet Style Printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks. Epson Printers use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers. Epsons "Micro Piezo Ink Jet Technology" and the ultrafine 4-picoliter ink droplets used in most of the Epson Ink Jet Style Printers, just don't always work well with Non-Epson Inks. There are people that say they use Generic or Third-Party ink cartridges in their Epson Printer and have never had a problem, but I've seen and read about too many problems caused by using Non-Epson ink and ink cartridges. Sometimes using the wrong ink can even cause possible damage to the Epson Print Head Assembly. Epsons use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers and correct Epson ink formulation is vital. Those printheads are one of the reasons that the Epson Printers make such quality color prints, that so many people rave about. You are taking your chances by using Third-Party or Generic ink cartridges, or even by refilling your old cartridges. I understand the differences in the costs of the Non-Epson Ink and Ink Cartridges, compared to the Epson Ink Cartridges and the choice is always yours to make. It really does not matter to me what type of ink cartridges you decide to use in your Epson Printer...Denny Conway

My sister has just given me her printer that she updated due to printing problems that she could not fix. I have been throught the usual procedure of cleaning head with no luck. I have read your articles on cleaning print heads and am about to give it a go with distilled water first.

My question is if I take out the cartriges (that are new) can I replace them just to test that the nozzles are un-blocked before outlaying the $80 australian for new nozzles. If not could you explain why.

Thank you very much for this site, it has all the information I needed and more.

oops I meant "$80 Australian for new ink cartridges"
thanks again.

Zafar: I'm sorry, but neither the Epson USA web-site, or the Epson UK web-site list an Epson Stylus C41SX Printer, in their available download lists. The only things that I can suggest is to try an actual search for available printer drivers on the GOOGLE web-site, at http://www.google.com/ , or you can always e-mail the "Epson Technical Support Department", for possible help or advice, at www.epson.com and then click-on "Proceed With E-Mail"...Good Luck! Re: epson printer by Denny D. Conway (4/21/04 10:01 AM) + / -
Ebags: It really depends on how old your printer is, but without the actual model of your printer, I cannot really tell you. GENERAL ANSWER: Yes on most of the newer models and no on most of the older models. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, REGUARDING THE REFILLING OF OLD CARTRIDGES ON MOST OF THE OLDER MODELS OF EPSON INK JET PRINTERS: All new Epson cartridges are sealed and there is pressure put in them at the factory. That pressure is what causes the air to be pushed out of the nozzles, that got into them when the old cartridge was removed and primes the nozzles with fresh ink. When people refill their own cartridges, they have no way to put that pressure back into the old cartridge, after refilling it. Also, if you reinstall the origional cartridge that you removed, it not only has already lost its pressure, but now there is air inside of the nozzle. That air starts to dry out any remaining ink inside of the nozzles and that normally results in clogging. Thats why Epson says to always install a New Epson Ink Cartridge, anytime you remove any ink cartridge, even if its full of ink. If the old cartridge was out of the printhead holder assembly for more than 30 minutes, the nozzle may have already started to clog. If you choose to just reinstall an old Epson Ink Cartridge, with no pressure inside it will be difficult to get the ink to start flowing again and you may have to run 6 to 10 sets of "Printhead Cleaning Cycles" and "Nozzle Tests", to actually be able to get the ink to start flowing again. The other problem is that on older models the printer always assumes you are installing a new cartridge and automatically resets the Internal Ink Counter anytime you remove a cartridge with the power turned on. Newer model Epson printers use smart cartridges, with electrical chips that have the ink counters built into the cartridge itself. On the older style printers, when you reinstall a previously removed [used] cartridge, the internal ink counter automatically resets and now your printer thinks the cartridge is new and of course full. What can happen is that your printer will usually run out of ink and never know it and then air will get into the nozzles, drying them out and that usually results in clogging. If a cartridge was out of the printhead holder assembly for more than 30 minutes, the nozzle may have already started to clog up. Running those cleaning cycles and nozzle tests those actually waste a lot of ink, but sometimes you may have no choice...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson printer by Wes (4/21/04 10:11 AM) + / -
Zafar, you can get the drivers from here tech.epson.com.au %3E%3E just select the operating system and download the driver you want.

ebags, depending on how much ink is in the cartridges you might want to use new cartridges but if thet are really new then in my experience you can reuse the cartridges. Epson wants you to replace them after they are removed and some people have cartridge pressure concerns but most people have had no problems reinstalling the ink cartridges.

When you inject the distilled water be sure you inject it very slooooowwwwwwwly. Too much pressure can damage the print head.

I wish you luck,

Wes.

Re: epson printer by champ (4/21/04 9:09 PM) + / -
I have an Epson Stylus C82. I just put 4 new ink cartridges into my printer. Before I changed, the printer was working fine. Now, when I try and print, it just shoots out a blank piece of paper with no ink on it. I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks

Re: epson printer by Wes (4/21/04 11:37 PM) + / -
The print head is clogged. Try running the print head utility a few times. Clean the print heads by performing a head cleaning followed by printing a nozzle check pattern. A head cleaning and nozzle check pattern must be performed as a cycle. After printing a nozzle check pattern, examine the printed dot pattern. Each staggered horizontal and straight vertical line should be complete, with no gaps in the dot pattern. If there are gaps in the dot pattern, continue with another cycle. Perform up to 3 cycles if necessary.

If that does not help then you can buy the print head cleaning kit from this site http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kea0.html and if you want to see what is involved in cleaning the print head using the kit this link will help http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/printhead.html If you would like to find out one reason why the print head clogged after changing the ink cartridge read this link http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/why.html if you want to really test the print output try printing the page from this link http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/Color.html

I hope this helps you out.

Wes.

Champ: JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: If you were to do a search on this Printer Repair Site, under the Epson C80 or C82 series Printers, you would see that you are not alone in your problem. I've read several posted messages on this Printer Repair Site on just that particular problem. It seems to be especially bad when you are using Non Epson Inks, but can happen even when using New Epson Ink Cartridges. I recommend that you do a general search on the "fixyourownprinter.com" printer repair site, under your C80 or C82 printer and then you can read about other peoples experiences, their advise and even what they have tried, sometimes successfully. It seems like the problems are not actually related to clogging, but usually more of a Hardware Failure [parts problem], but no way for me to really know. It seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, as normal. I have went thru the Technical Support Bulletins that Epson America posts for their Authorized Service Dealors and theres no mention of that type of problem, or anything even simular in nature. I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about other peoples reports, just in case it happens to apply in your case...Wes has supplied a couple of links that might also help: "If you want to see what's involved in print head cleaning try this link. http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/printhead.html ". If you want to see additional information on your C70/C80, then click on this link http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/c80.html ...Good Luck! Denny Conway...P.S. Check for an e-mail from me, with some previously posted information, by other people, that may be of some help to you, with your printers problem.

I have epson printer c40ux , It won't print and the maintenance light comes on and said to contact manufacturer, I did and they told me it was broken....duh. I used another brand of ink and that seems to be when the trouble started. I had cleaned nozzles before it quit. Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (4/26/04 11:13 AM) + / -
Barbara: A Service Error where all LED's/Lights are blinking at the same time, or where you get an "Unknown Error Message", or a "General Error Message", or even a message telling you that "Parts inside your printer at the end of their service life. Contact your dealer for replacement", is normally a Maintenance Request Error. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and normally your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads and then dry them out and simply reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...Good Luck! Denny Conway...P.S. THIS ADDITIONAL INFO POSTED BY "WES" MIGHT HELP: Wes 12/07/2003 13:57:30 To see what's involved in servicing the waste ink pads try this http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/wip.html [or] Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe ...please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...HERE'S SOME INFORMATION POSTED FROM OTHER PEOPLE, THAT MAY HELP YOU TRY TO LOCATE A SERVICE MANUAL OR A RESET PROCEDURE, IF YOU NEED ONE: "Master 10/05/2002 03:22:56 Re: Epson stylus adjustment programs. Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (2/10/05 1:45 PM) + / -
In case you don't get any replies back on your posted message, it might be because you added your HP Printer question on to an Epson Printer message board. Even then that Epson printer board is over 14 months old. So the chances of an HP Technician/Person, even reading your posted message, is not good at all. I read it, because I help out on the Epson printer questions & problems...You really need to start a completely new message board so that someone that helps out on the HP printer questions & problems, might actually see your posted message. If they see it, then they might be able to help you. IT'S EASY TO POST YOUR OWN SEPARATE MESSAGE: Just go to the "fixyourownprinter.com" web-site and click-on FORUMS. The first page will open up; scroll down to bottom of the page; in the bottom left corner is "click here to post a new message". Now simply read all the instructions and then you can post your printers problem or questions...Good Luck! Denny Conway...P.S. Look and see if your printers ink cartridges actually have tiny Electrical Chips mounted onto the body of the ink cartridge. Just so you will know: Once an old ink cartridge goes bad or empty, the printer marks that electrical chip as bad or empty. If there are chips on your ink cartridges, then you will have to purchase an actual "Ink Chip Resetter", to be able to reset that electrical chip. That way so your printer will know that you refilled that empty cartridge.

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (2/14/05 10:41 AM) + / -
June: Although you told us you had an Epson Printer, you did not actually say what model of printer that you had. Did your printer recently have a bad jam, that you may have had to remove out of your printer? If so, did you possibly have to yank out that jam with force, especially towards the rear of the printer, in the backwards direction? Turn off your printer and remove the Printer Cable from the printer, that goes to your computer system. Now turn the printer back on, with paper loaded as normal. Does your printer go to a normal ready condition, with only the Green Power Light on, or does a Red Error Light also come on? If only the green ready light is on, press in on the Paper Button and see if a piece of paper feeds in part way and stops, with no red error light coming on [that would be normal]. If so, then push-in on that paper button a second time and that piece of paper should feed on through your printer and out onto the paper exit tray or door area. If no red light comes on again, then try that same test several times, just to be sure that the Paper Feed Assembly is working normally. Try to answer the questions that I asked and let us know if that Paper Feeding Test was successful or not, as well as what model of printer you actually have. If we can help you further, we will try...Good Luck! Denny Conway

1280 off track? by jroddy (2/21/05 4:49 PM) + / -
I have a CIS system on a 1280. Once in awhile the darned rubber tubes get stuck under the cartidge carriage most often I can pull it out and all goes on fine but once in the past this seemd to bump "the carriage off it's track" according to a repair person who fixed it then. It got stuck again and I am getting the not communicating with the printer error on the computer and the solid ink & poewrr lights on the printer as I did the time I was told it was off its track. Doing the diagnostic test in the Epson manual with the printer unhooked from the computer it won't print a page hence a hardware rather than software issue. I have taken the cover off and see nothing obviously off any tack, the belts or attachement to the bottom bar the carriage slides on behind the carriage. Any other suggestions for diagnosing or fixing?

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (2/22/05 9:39 AM) + / -
jroddy: On a "1280", when the Ink Error Light & Power Light are both on SOLID, that indicates either a "Ink Overflow Counter Reset", or a "Reset, Timer IC Reset, EEPROM Clear" service condition. In either case, you would normally need an Epson Service Manual for reference & troubleshooting and usually the actual Reset Procedure, to correct and clear that service error condition. You can buy and download the Epson "Stylus Photo 890, 1280, 1290 Printers Service Manual", for around $10.00, from 2manuals.com at http://www.2manuals.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_18_39&products_id=155 . You can also buy and download the Epson "Stylus Photo 890, 1280, 1290 Printers Service Program", for around $9.00, also from 2manuals.com at http://www.2manuals.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_56_50&products_id=230 ...Good Luck! Please help me-- I'm not computer savvy!!

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/9/05 9:19 AM) + / -
K: You probably need to download new printer drivers onto your new hard drive. You can download the latest available drivers from the Epson Home Page at http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/index.jsp , for free. Click-on your particular area, where you live [example: USA]. Then click-on DRIVERS AND SUPPORT and then click-on your particular type of Epson Printer [example: INKJET]. Look under the Ink Jet Printers for your "Epson Stylus Color 660" and click-on it. Once the DRIVERS & DOWNLOAD PAGE opens, read the INFORMATION to locate your particular SYSTEM [Win's 95,98,ME,2000.etc.] and then click-on it. Denny Conway

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/9/05 10:28 AM) +1 + / -
K: You're welcome!...Just to let you know: When a printer actually has communication problems, its usually caused by: #1 a bad/failing parallel printer cable. It can be caused by an old worn cable, or a poor quality cable [not bi-directional printer cable, or not an IEEE-1284 rated cable], or simply a loose connection on either end of your present cable [be sure cable is securely connected on both ends]. Inexpensive parallel cables are not usually shielded enough and are not always bi-directional. #2 bad/corrupted printer drivers: printer drivers are usually available online from EPSON at no charge; remove/de-install your old printer drivers and then go online and download the drivers for your printer...The most common cause of communication errors, are caused by corrupted printer drivers. As printer drivers are FREE, I usually recommend trying those first if you have a possible communication problem. Be sure you actually download those drivers directly from Epson Company, rather than using your software that actually came with your printer. That way you are getting the latest available updates and newest version of the printer drivers, for your particular printer model. If downloading new printer drivers does not actually help, then simply buy a new Parallel Printer Cable and try that...Again, Good Luck! Denny Conway

If you know how to change that so you can only use your colored ink when your black is out please write me at Laura_Brazil_13@hotmail.com if you know how. Thank you very much!

Re: epson printer by newuser (3/16/05 12:33 PM) + / -
There's no way to change this behaviour, your printer requires all the colors to be present.

If you want you can fool the printer into thinking that the cartridge is full using a chip resetter but resetting a cartridge without refilling it can cause clogs, blocking the head.

Chip resetter for Epson printer are available from variuous resellers, http://www.alotofthings.com for example.

Printer Rollers by Trish (3/20/05 5:30 PM) + / -
My Epson Stylus C62 will not print. The roller on the left side will not feed the paper through in order for it to print. Is there any way that I can fix this myself or must I take it somewhere to be fixed? How much approximately would this cost? Thanks a lot for your help.

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/21/05 11:51 AM) + / -
Trish: It will usually be cheaper to buy another small ink jet printer, then to take it in for repairs. Most labor runs from $60.00 to over $100.00 an hour. Depending on whats actually wrong with your printer, decides if you can repair it yourself or not. Unfortunatly, there's no way for me to actually know whats wrong. If it looks like the paper is actually trying to feed-in crooked, or at an angle, then it's possible that the paper may be running into a foreign object. That could cause the paper to stall, or even feed-in crooked and sometimes even stop the paper from feeding in at all. Remove all the paper and use a flashlight to look carefully into the paper feed-in area. Look for a pen, pencil, push pin, paper clip, candy, etc. If you can't see anything, then actually pick your printer up and turn it so the paper opening is facing down and shake it a little, side to side. Your trying to dislodge anything that might be stuck in the paper entrance area. If nothing falls out, then turn it back over and use the flashlight to once again look inside that area. Sometimes you'll see an object that may have moved over into view while you were shaking the printer. Any foreign object might block the paper from actually being able to move forward, so then the printer thinks there is no paper installed. You may have to even remove the Top Cover to be able to get a better view of that paper feed area. Unfortunatly, just removing that cover is not always that easy, especially on the newer Epson Printers. You may need a Service Manual for reference, disassembly and troubleshooting. There is an "Epson Stylus C60 Printer Information Page", that also includes the C62 series, that you can view at http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/C60.html . It does have a section on the left side you can click-on, titled HOUSING REMOVAL and also a section titled PAPER FEED, that may be of some help to you, if you want to try the possibly needed servicing. If that does not help, then you may have to go on-line and buy and download the actual service manual to use. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals for most epson printers, at www.2manuals.com (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 +/- ). If that source is not available, then I would recommend that you go to the "Compass Micro Inc" web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm and check with them directly, to see if they have a Service Manual or Reset Procedure available yet for your printer. Several people have posted that they have manuals available for the newer printers, that are not actually available from other normal sources. Even if there is not a foreign object stuck in that area, with the top cover off, you might just possibly see what the problem is and even be able to correct it...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Have Epson Stylus Photo 890. Using Mac OSX 10.3

Am getting extra light black dots on paper - dots in a various columns. Ran Utilties: Nozzle Check, Head Cleaning (2X), Print Head Alignment. Still a problem.

How do I solve this?

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (3/29/05 11:05 AM) + / -
datsjuans: Its possible that your problem is being caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, lint and hair that sticks to the wet ink on the bottom side and backside areas of the Printhead Assembly. That build-up acts like a small paint brush and can transfer wet ink to the paper as the Printhead Assembly is moving back-n-forth during the printing process. Sometimes that build-up simply smears the wet ink already on the paper, from the printing process. Once those two areas are thoughly cleaned, the problem will normally go away, unless its actually being caused by a Hardware/Parts Problem [such as a failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly]. Check for a couple of e-mails from me that should help in that area, in case you want to do the cleaning and at least eliminate that possibility...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I've been having issues with my C80 printer for some time. In the past I placated it by uninstalling its software and reinstalling it. This time I keep getting this error message

"16 Bit Windows subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT.
The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications"

I have tried following the instructions on the Microsoft site and haven't been successful.

Also when I click on PROPERTIES and then GENERAL the little window next to LOCATION is blank.

I am not a computer geek by any means but can usually stumble around and get it running again. I've had the printer several years & the past several months I've been having a lot of on-going issues each time an ink cartridge has to be replaced and frankly, I would't mind replacing it if that would solve ALL the problems. Not being able to uninstall the current software concerns me. Could the software uninstalling problems be passed on to a new printer? Or does anyone that speaks plain English know how I can resolve this issue myself?

Re: epson printer by newuser (4/1/05 12:44 PM) + / -
It looks like you have installed printer software before upgrading to Windows Xp and now you can remove it because the uninstaller works only under Windows 98/ME.

Try removing the printer driver from Start-> Settings-> Printers , right clicking on "Epson Stylus C80" and selecting Delete; then download driver for Windows Xp from http://esupport.epson-europe.com/SupportHome.aspx?lng=en-GB

Re: epson printer by DBR (4/1/05 12:56 PM) + / -
I bought the computer in 2002 with Windows XP installed at the factory. I bought the Epson C80 the following week. It has been fine until about 6 months ago. I uninstalled the software at that time and reinstalled it. This error message is an entirely new issue that came up this week. It's possible that one of the anti-spyware programs has contributed, I suppose, but what now?

I have been all over the Epson site and cannot find the download for the Ink Moniter. I tried searching for ink moniter & status moniter, checked out downloads & tried their trouble-shooting guide which has never been of any value. If there's a download for the ink moniter/status moniter I wish you'd tell me where it's hidden.

At this address there is the complete driver list:

http://esupport.epson-europe.com/SupportHome.aspx?lng=en-GB

Epson Status Monitor 3.0b is the first file proposed for download, you can get it also at this address:

ftp://ftp.epson-europe.com/pub/download/40/epson4040eu.exe

Re: Re: epson printer by Anonymous (4/2/05 8:51 AM) + / -
Oh, but of course. They put it in the European section. Silly me. I clicked on United States. It downloaded fine, but will not install. The Error message reads that it's unable to install because it's currently being used by Windows close all applications, etc. I did that.Same result. Any ideas?

I am the preceding "anonymous" with the installation issue concerning the status moniter for the C80. Sorry.
Thanks, DBR

Re: epson printer by newuser (4/2/05 10:11 AM) + / -
Restart from scratch, uninstall (in this order):

Printer software (Start-> Settings -> Control Panel-> Add/Remove Apps );
Printer driver if it is still present (Start-> Settings -> Printers -> right click on Epson Stylus C80 -> Delete).

Turn off and unplug the printer, install new driver for Xp turning the printer on only when prompted by driver installation utility and then install the Epson Status Monitor.

Man I am at wits end. I really need a bit of help, if possible.

I have a 1280 that is behaving strangely. It is "ghosting" text and graphics, and I can't figure out why.

It doesn't do it all the time, and as a computer consultant, I am reasonably well versed in troubleshooting. I cannot make it happen, nor can I make it go away.

If someone would be kind enough to view This Example (http://img62.exs.cx/img62/9566/epson12803cm.gif ), I would be most grateful for any help.

Re: epson printer by Wes (4/2/05 4:25 PM) + / -
Try the easiest thing first. Check to see if the carriage guide shaft is clean and oiled. For info on cleaning use this link http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/glide.html

There can be other reasons for that type of problem but usually it's the guide shaft.

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Re: epson printer by YrbkMgr (4/3/05 11:07 AM) + / -
Thanks Wes. It seems that after a while it straightens itself out. So it's likely the guide shaft. I will be cleaning it tonight and will report back.

Thanks for the advice.

I reinstalled my Epson Stylus Photo EX and now get half-prints with a timeout error message. How much time should I put in the printer timeout box? Will this solve the problem? Thanks for any ideas.

Re: epson printer by newuser (4/3/05 11:38 AM) + / -
The problem is the parallel cable you are using, it should be not compatible with enhanced parallel mode of your lpt1 port.

To verify reboot your pc, enter the bios setup and configure your parallel port as "SPP" or Normal. Save changes and reboot, it should work.

Re: epson printer by YrbkMgr (4/3/05 2:50 PM) + / -
Once again, FixYourOwnPrinter dot com has solved the problem (at least it appears that way).

What was happening that I hadn't mentioned was that sometimes, there was no "ghosting", but the cartridge holder would occassionally SMACK against the right side of the printer during a print job - it was loud. Then the black ink would drop out, requiring a head cleaning. Then I'd restart the print job, and SMACK, again.

Then I would run print tests, check drivers, alignment utilit, ya-da, ya-da; Then I'd see the ghosting.

I cleaned the guide shaft, very carefully, lubed it well without over doing it and it hasn't smacked against the left side of the printer since, nor produced the ghosting.

So, we'll see how it goes on the rest of my print jobs, but for now it looks great.

I should have mentioned that the printer is two years old and I run about 10,000 sheets of photo glossy paper through it per year. So it HAS had a lot of wear.

Thanks to this site, I may just be able to keep the printer tip top.

I'll post back if anything else arises, but in the mean time, THANK YOU man. Thank you.

Re: epson printer by DBR (4/6/05 10:23 PM) + / -
The issues I had last week with the C80 are resolved and many thanks. Now, it's giving a message to the effect that "parts inside the printer are nearing the end of their life. Please see the manufacturer for replacement parts" Has anyone ever seen this before and if so, how much lead time do I have on this? Is this something like the infamous "check engine light" where it might keep chugging for months (or at least weeks) or is it about to go toes up on me at any moment?

my epson c41sx is b link red-gree?,Why for solution?

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (4/7/05 9:26 AM) + / -
hary: Because your "C41SX" was made by Epson Company for overseas sales & distribution [usually in the Australia area], I don't have a Service Manual to refer to, living here in the USA. However, the most common problem when both lights are blinking, is the MAINTENANCE REQUEST ERROR. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and usually your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Parts Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work. There is an "Epson Stylus C60 Printer Information Page", that also includes the C41 series, that you can view at http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/C60.html . It does have a section on the left side you can click-on, titled WASTE INK PAD SERVICING and also a section titled HOUSING REMOVAL, that will be of some help to you, if you want to try the needed servicing. However, you will still need to go on-line and buy and download the actual Reset Procedure, to clear the actual Service Error Condition, if the SSC Service Utility listed below, does not actually clear your Waste Ink Counter....THIS ADDITIONAL INFO MIGHT ALSO BE OF SOME HELP: Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...Here's some previously posted info by NEWUSER, on that SSC Utility: Re: Epson C40+ Error and power light flashing by newuser (4/5/05 11:10 AM). To reset the error download this utility:
http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . Once installed run the program and configure it, closing the main window and right clicking the icon in the tray area, from there choose Configure and select C40. After configuration, select Protection counter -> Reset protection counter, it should be able to clear the error message. Remember that you should also clean the waste ink pads located at the printer bottom, for a step by step guide download the service manual for your printer from this site: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson ...Unfortunatly, that "SSC Service Utility" does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems and sometimes will not even work on actually listed printer models, so you will have to check it out for yourself. Just in case that source does not work: You may actually need to go on-line to try and locate a "SERVICE MANUAL" and or the actual "RESET PROCEDURE", to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals & Reset Procedures for most Epson Printers, from "Manuals 4 You" at http://www.manuals4you.com . http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=2_18 ...Good Luck! Re: epson printer by blogs (4/28/05 4:59 AM) + / -
I have an Epson Stylus C70. It ran out of (Epson) ink, and the red ink light came on and has remained on. This appears to prevent me going through the normal computer led ink re-installation cycle, but by the tricks I have found on your excellent troubleshooting forum, I have replaced what I believe was the out of ink cartridge (determined by careful weighing!) and I have replaced - simply taken out and put in again - the other cartridges. The red out-of-ink light remains stubbornly on, and the printer does not respond to computer driven nozzle check or clean, despite switching off and on of printer and computer computer. Nor, of course, will it do any printing. I should be most grateful for any suggestions.

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (4/28/05 11:02 AM) + / -
bloqs: I suggest that you follow the steps in your "User's Guide"/"Referenmce Guide" on how to check and replace the ink cartridges. If that red ink error light is still on, then there's still a problem with an ink cartridge. If you happen to be using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges [generic or third-party cartridges] in your printer, those can also be causing possible problems. Its very common that some brands of non-epson ink cartridges may not always be recognized by the newer models of epson printers. Its usually because of the inexpensive and or incompatable electrical chips that are mounted on some brands of generic or third-party ink cartridges. Unfortunatly, there is no way to make your epson printer use that non-epson ink cartridge, if it cannot actually recognize it. Sometimes you will even get error messages up on your monitors screen, telling you that you are actually using a non-epson ink cartridge, or that your printer cannot recognize the cartridge that you installed. Sometimes the ink level indicator, on your status monitor, will not show an actual ink level, but may indicate a cartridge error or cartridge problem instead. Either you buy an actual epson ink cartridge, or keep trying the non-epson cartridges, until you find a brand that will work in your printer. I have read a suggestion that you can always use an actual epson ink cartridge and when its empty, use the electrical chip off that epson cartridge. You could install the epson chip onto the non-epson ink cartridge, but then you would need an actual "Ink Chip Resetter", to reset that chip, that was marked as empty by your printer. Until that chip is reset, it will not work in your printer. Some people simply refill the empty epson ink cartridge and then reset the electrical chip. The choice on what to do, or what to use is yours to make...Just to let you know: The printer will not respond to any communication given to it until that ink error condition is corrected. I live in the USA and your "C70" was made by epson company for overseas sales and distribution, usually in the UK & Latin America. You can always go on-line to the Epson UK web-site and view the "Epson Stylus C70 Support Home", at http://esupport.epson-europe.com . There is also a free download of an "Epson Stylus Color C70/C80 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson , that may also be of some help to you...Good Luck! Re: epson printer by Anonymous (4/28/05 8:25 PM) + / -
I have an Epson 900G ink jet printer running on my ethernet network with my two Macs both running OSX. The printer has worked fine for years and yesterday when I sent a normal print job to it, it simply shut itself down. Turning the power switch on and off had no effect, it simply appeared to not be receiving power. I connected it to other power sources all to no avail. After an hour or so I tried turning it on again and it powered up. I tried sending a different print job to the printer and it did the same thing and shut itself down. Any ideas would be appreciated.

All of a sudden, after working fine for a year, my c80 prints the background of the entire page dark gray (with text docs) or red (with color Photoshop docs) over which it prints what it's supposed to. I downloaded and reinstalled the driver from Epson, but that didn't solve the problem. Anyone else have this problem suddenly turn up? Any advice?
Thanks.

Re: epson printer by George B. (5/1/05 1:41 PM) + / -
I have a C80 printer. I mistakenly picked up an Epson 4-pack ink cartridge package for the C82 printer. Can I use the C82 color cartridges in the C80 printer? If not, what differs between the C80
color cartridges and the C82 color cartridges?

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (5/2/05 10:16 AM) + / -
George B: I'm sorry, only the actual black ink cartridge is the same cartridge number on both the C80 & the C82 models. The C82 uses different color ink cartridges and they are not inner changeable. Mainly because the C82 ink cartridges use different electrical chips on the actual ink cartridges and those chips cannot be be recognized by the C80 printer. I would suggest you take the "4-pack ink cartridge package" and actually get the correct cartridges for your C80 printer. Although both models use the "Dura Brite Ink", the cartridges are not inner-changeable do to the different electrical chips. I'm sorry, but I do not know if the actual inks in the cartridges, are exactly the same or not...Denny Conway

Epson 1200 printing black color blocks by KenMa (5/3/05 2:08 PM) + / -
Hi,
Not knowing all the potential risks I removed and refilled both the color and black cartridges in my Epson 1200. Now when I do a test page or any print with color all I get is full ink blocks where the text and images are supposed to be (lots of ink is being used because still wet when paper exits). I've downloaded the Epson reset program, but have not tried it yet. Have I distroyed the print heads or is there a way to recover from this? Thanks in advance for any feedback. Ken

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (5/3/05 6:05 PM) + / -
Ken: Simply refilling your origional epson ink cartridges will not usually destroy the print heads. Its possible that using that non-epson ink could cause problems with the print head assembly, but thats usually over a longer period of time. Unfortunatly, not all "Generic" & "Third-Party" ink and ink cartridges are made the same and none of them actually contain the right formulation of ink, for the epson printers [formula is patented by Epson Company]. Some are probably close and seem to be better than others, but some simply can clog-up or even damage the print head assemblies on epson printers. Epson ink jet printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks, especially the newer models made with-in the last few years. Epson printers use a completely different print head inking system than most other brands of printers and correct epson ink formulation is vital. Most, if not all of the other manufactors, use thermal or bubblejet print heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. My guess is that you problem is simply because of the actual refilling that you did, using the wrong ink in your ink cartridges. There's no way to know for sure, but the chances are good that if you install actual new-epson ink cartridges and simply run some sets of "Print Head Cleaning Cycles" & "Nozzle Tests", that may correct your printing problem...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Re: epson printer by Anonymous (5/4/05 5:40 AM) + / -
I have had the exact same problem with my Epson 900G printer as anonymous on 4/28/05. It shuts off when I send a job to print. Wait a while and the power is back on. Try to print, shuts itself down again. Each time, it gives a "communications error." I've reinstalled the driver, changed ink cartridges, etc. to no avail.
Anybody know what's happening with these 900Gs??

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (5/4/05 10:25 AM) + / -
Anonymous: If your printer is actually shutting itself off [power completely shuts off], then I would have to guess that your printer has an actual hardware/parts failure. Most likely the actual Power Supply PCB is starting to fail, or some other related electrical assembly/part is starting to fail and shuts down your printer when that part overheats. As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. I have ran into a couple of "900's" that had a short circuit problem in the metal shielding box that mounts over the "power supply unit/board assembly". I have seen the end with the holes/cutouts in it, actually have that side of the shielding plate bend from a straight 90 degree angle to about a 45 degree angle. At the 45 degree angle the metal side plate can touch electrical components, causing the shorting condition. You will have to pull the bottom board assembly to be able to visually see the metal shielding plate/box. If yoe remove that metal box assy, check for a bent side and then straighten it. Then use electrical tape and tape all the edges that fit down onto the power supply board. Less chance of contact causing another shorting condition. Of course, if you find that side was in contact with the board, there's always a chance that damage was actually done to the "power supply assy"...The other area that I've seen some electrical shorting occur is on the right side of the printer [from the front]. With the top cover removed you can look at the right side and see several white electrical ribbon cables running along that side. Very carefully pull those cables loose from where they are taped to the metal frame area and then put strips of black electrical tape onto the metal frame area. The black tape acts as insulation between the ribbon cable and the metal frame and helps to stop possible shorts. Use black electrical tape between any ribbon cables and metal areas on the right side and in the back side or any other area you can easily get too...There is a free download of an "Epson Stylus Color 900 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson , that you may be able to use as a guide for reference on your "900G" model. That manual may even be of some help as reference in disassembly on your particular printer. There is also an "Epson Stylus Color 900 Information Page", available to view at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/900.html , that may be of some help on your "900G" model. It does have a section on the left side you can click-on, titled HOUSING REMOVAL, that may be of some help in at least removing that top cover assembly....Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: epson printer by amarr (5/21/05 6:00 PM) + / -
My Epson printer prints differently depending on the driver. On my old G4 OS 9.2.2 system it uses the epson driver and prints rich saturated colors. On my new systemm (apple printer driver??) the prints look spotty in flat areas and generally faded. I am using the same files, the same printer, same paper, same ink, etc. The only differences is the version of Quark / Illustrator and the printer driver. Since it has happened with Illustrator files as well as Quark, I am assuming that it is the driver. Have you heard of this problem?

I have an epson c41sx printer which displays "see service center". what could be the problem with this?

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (6/28/05 11:09 AM) + / -
Jondavis...HERE'S THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM: A Service Error where all LED's/Lights are flashing at the same time [some models the lights will be alternatly blinking], or where you get an "Unknown Error Message", or a "General Error Message", or even a message telling you that "Parts inside your printer at the end of their service life, contact your dealer for replacement", or "Parts inside your printer require maintenance or replacement, call your service company", is normally a Maintenance Request Error. You can see exploded parts diagrams for most epson ink jet printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that waste ink counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work. You may be able to reset that waste ink counter, using the SSC SERVICE UTILITY available at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . Unfortunatly, that utility only works using a windows operating system. You can check and see if your particular epson printer is compatible, by going to http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html ...Here's some previously posted info that may also help. "NEWUSER Re: Epson Error and power light flashing by newuser (4/5/05 11:10 AM). To reset the error download this utility: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . Once installed run the program and configure it, closing the main window and right clicking the icon in the tray area, from there choose Configure and select your printers model. After configuration, select Protection counter -> Reset protection counter, it should be able to clear the error message. If that does not actually work, then the only suggestion I can give is to perform a soft-reset before resetting counter. Remove also the Epson status agent, it detects errors and it may hinder communication with the printer, then reboot your pc. As profile choose the one sscservice didn't use after autoconfiguration, check for printer response. Remember that you should also clean the waste ink pads located at the printer bottom. For a more in-depth procedure by NEWUSER, go to his site at http://myprinter.altervista.org/simplefaq/mysimplefaq.html#counter "....Unfortunatly, that ssc service utility may not actually work on all epson printers and not on all operating systems, so you will have to check it out for yourself. Just in case that source does not work: You may actually need to go on-line to try and locate the actual reset procedure, to buy and download to reset that waste ink counter...Good Luck! Hi i have a epson printer stylus color 660 and every time i try to print something the paper always gets jammed no matter what i do to fix it i tryed the realignment thing i took the paper out and put it back in i have no idea whats wrong with it please help me

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (7/8/05 2:46 PM) + / -
Misha: If the paper looks like it is actually starting to feed-in at an angle or crooked, then the paper may actually be running into a foreign object that is causing your paper jam problem. Here's some general information on that problem, just in case that is what is happening...THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF PAPER FEEDING IN CROOKED/SKEWED: It's possible that the paper may be running into a foreign object, which could cause the paper to stall, or even feed-in crooked and sometimes even stop the paper from feeding in at all. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals and or Service Adjustment Programs/Resets for most printers, at www.2manuals.com (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 +/- ).

I've an almost new CX15000. The problem is that when I replace the black cardrigde after 4-5 sheets the ink-led started to flash and said that the cardridge is not "well installed". After trying to solve the problem (restart the printer, pc, cardridge, etc), I change the cardrigde for a new one and started to print ok... but just for half an hour... then the problem started again (led flashing and window saying that the cardridge isn't well installed).
Can anyone help me??

Re: epson printer by Denny Conway (7/29/05 2:07 PM) + / -
Ede: I'm sorry, but I'm not framiliar with or trained on the newer "CX" models and have never even seen your particular model. Although I'm assuming its actually a
"CX1500", rather than the "CX15000" that you actually listed...As you say its "almost new", then I'm guessing that its still under its one-year Epson Warranty. If your printer is actually new and still under its origional Factory Warranty, then there's no charge to talk to the "Epson Technical Support Department". That way you are talking directly with a technician, that is actually trained by Epson Company on your particular printer. To see available phone numbers for technical support and replacement parts ordering, go on-line to Epson @ " http://www.epson.com ", or call the Epson Automated Support Locator @ 1-800-442-2110 [press 1, then 1 & following prompts]. If your printer is actually out of warranty, you will need a credit card, before the technicians can help you, because there is a charge for technical support over the phone...If your Printer is less than one year old and the Epson Technical Support Department was not able to help you, then you can call the "Epson Connection" at 1-562-276-1300. Epson can start a warranty claim for you and on the "CX1500" model, they will usually send you a replacement printer in exchange for your defective one. Thats only if your particular model is under warranty and actually covered by Epson's WHOLE UNIT EXCHANGE program. Check your receipt or invoice for purchase date, because you may actually need it anyway, for Proof Of Purchase [POP], for that possible warranty claim thru Epson Company...If your printer happens to be out of warranty, then you can e-mail the "Epson Technical Support Department", for possible free help or advice, at http://www.epson.com and then click-on "Proceed With E-Mail". They state on their web-site, that they "will respond via e-mail within 1 business day"...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I have been uising 3rd party inks in my C82 for a couple of years now and have no problems until now. All of a sudden 2 or 3 black 3rd party nk cartridges come up with error message on the status monitor "Ink cartridge (black) cannot re recognized" and the ink button (red) is always on.

After reading many messages on this and other forums, I purchased an Epson black TO32120 cartridge but I am getting the same results. Do I have a clogged head and need to buy the head cleaner kit or scrap the whole printer and get an HP.

Re: epson printer by bograt (8/23/05 1:40 AM) + / -
heres my problem.

I had a problem with my cx5400 so had it replaced. The engineer who bought the replacement printer only had one cartridge YELLOW which he left. Anyway being short of cash I bought replacement inks (not genuine) and put them in however as I had the original Yellow I put that in to. Anyway the printer worked fine for a few weeks (infact until my old warenty ran out)the black red and blue work fine but the ( original) Yellow won't fire it just comes through pink. I can't afford a new printer especially as this one was so expencive but I need to do lots of certificates for some students. how can I sort this problem out even if I have to strip the bloody thing down???????

The only epson I aint had a problem with is my daughters c42ux printer which was sat for a year not being used when I had the problem with my cx5400 I fired the c42ux up and after running a head clean It worked with no problem. If I cant get my cx5400 sorted I will save up for a few months and buy a HP

can someone plz help me, my epson 960 ran out of ink so i replaced them with generic ink, and now my printer doesn't work, the red light for the ink is constantly on, and when i press it , says there is no ink in one of the black cartridges and the yellow one, should i replace them all with the real epson ink, plz help, can someone please respond as soon as possible so i can order the new ink because i need to use the printer. thanks

Re: epson printer by Wes (edited 8/28/05 1:25 PM) + / -
This is not a new problem with generic ink cartridges. If you are buying ink cartridges from eBay I would recomend you look the "Insten" brand. The cartrisges cost a little more than most but they do work.

Good luck,

Wes.

Re: epson printer by Wes (8/28/05 11:37 AM) + / -
It's always best to use the original Epson ink cartridges. Most of the time the generic ink cartridges are just not made properly. Which is the whole cause of the problem. That's not to say that you could have a hardware problem but 99% of the time it's just the ink cartridge.

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Will somebody respond to my (afndave) question of 8/21, i.e. black ink not recognizable by C82 monitor and red light always on. The question is do I have a clogged head problem and need to buy a head cleaner, or scrap the printer and buy a HP????

Re: epson printer by Wes (8/28/05 1:28 PM) + / -
Read this http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/14360#176?reply=176 it would apply toyour printer too. There may be a problem where the chip connects with the connectors in the carriage. Sometimes a pin gets bent.

Re: epson printer by Anonymous (9/2/05 7:06 AM) + / -
Hi SeanY can't seem to find the post mate, any chance of posting a link????

I have used the cleaning cartridge with no result this is a brand new printer (replacement ) with the original yellow in. All I get when I try the nozzle test is a broken grey / black line where the yellow should be but the red blue and black are fine which are the snide cartridges.

the link to you c & cx thread would be welcome because I cannot afford to replace the printer again.

Re: epson printer by bograt (9/2/05 8:22 AM) + / -
Hi mate thanks for the link.

It is annoying to discover that these are problems that Epson are aware of but continue selling the bags of crap. I've had a number of Epson printers over the years and to be honest I don't have a good word to say about them.

So I take it, it looks like there is a blockage do you think??? from the description I give and the steps taken would you sugest a head removal ( thats Print head LOL ) If so can you point me to a link that will describe the easiest and safest way to remove it.

Regards bograt

Re: Re: epson printer by bograt (9/2/05 9:06 AM) + / -
Did a visual check of the hose which seems to be attached which has me worried I have continued to run the head cleaning with the yellow cleaning cartridge in with the same results a broken grey / black line where the yellow should be, the printer has only ever run with one set of cartridges because it's new and if this is what is happening whilst it's new I am wondering if the print head is knackered?????? if so then what could have happened??? it aint had a paper jab. the yellow ink was not removed and exchanged untill there was a problem.

Any ideas which aint going to resort in me having to fork out more cash for yet another printer. I only baught the bloody thing as it is a scanner photo copier etc.

Re: epson printer by bograt (9/3/05 7:38 AM) + / -
Ok! ran the nozzel check again after leaving the printer for a further 12 hours with the same results any realistic ideas apart from just using it for B&W print and scanner.

Wendy,

It would sure help if you described any symptoms the printer is having, flashing lights, beeps, etc.

Is it giving you any error messages?

I've already used up my entire Psychic Friends budget for September determining symptoms that other posters didn't list, sorry, .

Hi, my epson 1290s is printing a red band down the centre left of the page (Vertial band on A3 landscape sheet). Large areas of colour, even those that shouldn't contain much red, e.g. grey, gradate through this band and do not appear consistent. The printer has been used regularly, the black cartridge is nearly full, whilst the colour is 80% used though no warnings are showing. Both epson cartridges, no others ever used. At first this was intemittant but is now constant. Nozzle checks and cleaning cycles appear to have no effect and 'check pattern' is fine - although I haven't done more than three cleaning cycles at a time. Can someone help please? Big problem, short time available to fix it....

Re: epson printer by hpwizard (9/7/05 5:27 AM) + / -
If the power light is blinking this usually indicates data is being sent to the printer. Try dissconnecting the printer from the PC & then replace the carts Or delete any jobs which may still be trying to send to the printer.
let us know how you get on?

AUTOEXEC.NT problems sometimes occur when the files autoexec.nt and config.nt are missing from c:\windows.
You can copy the autoexec.nt and config.nt files from c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32

but the problem i am having is that i put generic ink first and the printer stopped working and now i bought the brand name ink. and the manual says to replace, the green light has to be steady and not flashing, but the light keeps flashing when its in the ready position to put ink inside, and there is no data being sent to the printer, i also unplugged the printer, and unplugged the plug that was conected to the pc, but it keeps blinking for some reason, should i still put in the new ink, cuz i bought it now, and the green ink keeps flashing.

Ok as I got no advice on the problem I am having with my brand new replacement cx5400, I have been left using the printer to print letters and stuff that does not rely on the yellow ink.

This is obviously not ideal, my wife showed me her catalogue (it is having a sale!) and they are selling the cx3600 epson and as I need a new printer to do colour stuff i.e. certificates I am concidering one last ditch attempt with an epson. Before I commit however,I could do with feedback on this printer as it is a cx series I assume it has the same crap associated with it but what are they like for reliability and using none generic inks? and for that matter are the inks the same as for the cx5400? any advice is wellcomed.

Have read that the head can be removed and the face soaked in solvent or even warm water to repair the problem...but do not see how to remove the head from the carrige...could you cookbook me through the process? Do you get at the head by removing the metal plate on the bottom of the unit?

Epson Stylus Color 400 by Corneliu (10/14/05 9:58 AM) + / -
My problem is similar to ANT's problem .
At one rebooting the black cartridge's led became red .
After checking all the connections, i though it's an electronic problem in the printer's head.
I guess the printer knows the cartridge is inserted when the lammela from the inside is pressed by the cartridge so it do an electrical contact.
However with the black cartridge out, when i press myself the lamela and then start the printer nothing happens, the led is red again .

Can anyone give me some advices ?
Thank you .

Re: epson printer by printerrepairpros (10/14/05 4:40 PM) + / -
Normally a solid red cartridge LED is telling you that the cartridge is empty.

Re: epson printer by Corneliu (10/15/05 12:18 AM) + / -
Yes, thanks for the response . But i buyed a new black cartridge and still having the same problem .
I suspect even my old cartridge wasn't empty . I don't know in which manner can this printer controll the filling of the cartridges . However, after dissasembling the printer mechanism and some trials to detect the sensors, the problem suddenly changed (after a reset) - the color cartridge LED is a solid red too and the paper and power red flashing. All that with the cartridges and paper in . Any suggestions welcome . Thanks .

Re: epson printer by Anonymous (10/15/05 9:50 AM) -1 + / -
You now have a "fatal error" condition. It can be a sensor error (home position, sheet feeder, paper sensor), or a defective motor (paper feed, carriage), or binding carriage.

Re: epson printer by gav (10/16/05 1:06 PM) + / -
Hello there

I've just bought a new epson dx3800 series printer as the ink cartiges are much cheaper than for my HP.
I've used it as a standalone copier but now that I've come to install the drivers on my Macintosh I have seen that there is no Macintosh drivers on the CD.
Does anybody know if this is normal? I'm sure the guy in the shop said it was OSX compatble, please let me know if and where I can find the drivers!

Thanks very much for your time.

Gavin.

Re: epson printer by Anonymous (10/16/05 2:57 PM) + / -
This model (DX3800) does not support the Mac/Apple operating system.
Here are the specs on the printer.

Compatibility PC OS required Microsoft Windows XP , Microsoft Windows 98 , Microsoft Windows 2000 , Microsoft Windows ME

The D24200, DX4250, DX4800 AND DX 4850 Support OS9 and OS x

I hope this helps

Re: epson printer by gav (10/17/05 4:02 AM) + / -
I thought that might be the case but managed to download some drivers for the Mac from the epson website. One for scanning and one for printing.
The drivers I downloaded came from the DX3800 series section ad so I expected them to work. Not sure why they'd let you download drivers when its not compatible.
These installers look like they are installing fine but when I go to set up the printer in Fax and Printer setup it detects the Peinter under the USB heading but shows 'driver not installed' next to it.

Just bought it and already fitted the cartriges, not sure if I'll be able to take it back now.

Thanks once again!

Gavin.

epson stylus color 777 by Reta (10/22/05 10:05 AM) + / -
I have an epson stylus color 777 printer and there is something wrong with it. It doesnt print. It allows the paper to go through (only if i push the maintenance button twice) but no ink gets on the page. A little thing pops up on the screen saying that the printer isnt ready and to retry-but the thing just keeps on popping up and nothing gets printed. I am sure erything is hooked up properly and that the ink cartridges are both full. Unfortunatly I dont think i have any installation cd rom. Just recently my computer had gone into repaired because it was heavily infected with spyware, adware and other viruses, but now it's all cleaned up. And besides, thge last things i was able to print were coloured all wrong. Like what was supposed to be bright blue came out bright pink and you could see lines all over the page of where the ink cartridge had gone. I had attempted to download a software program to make the printer work but unfortunatly we couldnt find our printer (epson color stylus 777) and I make the mistake of downloading something else. How can I get rid of the thing I downloaded and figure out where to download the right software?

Re: epson printer by Anonymous (10/23/05 2:56 PM) + / -
Go to www.epson.com. Download the software and user manual from their site.
Hope this helps.

I have been using third party ink in my C60 prrinter for some time with no problems. However, after being unused for a month, when I tried to print a photo, the cyan nozzle printed not at all. After a couple of head cleaning cycles, it cleared up and I printed 10 4-1/2" by 6" photos with no problem. The next day, the cyan nozzle was plugged again and after a couple of head cleaning cycles was getting better. During the next cleaning cycle. I received the error message "Maintenance CAll. Parts inside your printer require maintenance or replacement. Contact your dealer" and the red error light began flashing and continues to do so. Is ther anything I can do myself, or is it time to buy a new printer?

Hi, try a different paper type i had a simular problem when printing over 2 pages as the paper being printed is sliding down on wet ink which smudges like your example, you can check this by setting your printer to drafts or economy it uses less ink and drys almost instantly.the last thing check you cleaner bay, just fold a kitchen towel sheet up to absorb the ink.

I purchased an rx500 used. The printer clicks loudly while trying to load paper. This noise comes from the back of the unit. I then get a 'paper out' error. There was a large ~3 inch spring that seems to have come loose from printer. Where does this spring go? Is the spring the reason why it won't load paper? How can I fix this printer?

Re: epson printer rx500 by Anonymous (12/2/05 1:47 AM) + / -
Yes open the lid of the printer and look for the movement of the paper feeder there should be somthing black for the sping to attach to, try holding this black or grey lever up or down to see if it feeds through.

Re: epson printer by parasite (12/3/05 8:25 PM) + / -
Hi, use a nail file or a pin open the lid where you put the cartrage in and where the conection are place the nailfile down the back to move it foward so when you insert your ink it makes conection.

You can normally get a cartridge chip resetter for the price of a new cartridge, well worth the investment if you want to go down the refilling route!

I have an Epson 640 that has gone into "everythings blinking" mode - right in the middle of my finally printing a project I've been working on for 3 months. I read earlier entries on why this happened and what needs to be done, but when I go to the links listed, they are long gone. I know you can't tell me how to reset the counter, but can you give me current suggestions as to where I might find that info? Lots of places say they offer to give instructions, but they are just selling toner and no instuctions seem to be listed anywhere. I just keep searching for help, but in vain.

Re: epson printer by Wes (1/25/06 8:29 PM) + / -
If you have a PC you can use the ssc service utility. Just download it and install it then reset the protection counter. You can get it from here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe for info on how to use the utility try here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

Besides the protection counter you should clean or replace the absorber pads. Use thi link for info http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/wip.html

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Re: epson printer by RubyRose (1/28/06 3:47 PM) + / -
Thanks for the suggestions Wes. I went to those links and my son and I took out the waste ink pads as it suggested. Then I started to rinse them with water per the instructions. Alas, they pretty much turned to mush after about a minute. The only replacement sites I could find sold some kind of kit - and I'm not sure they are even the right one, and it is $43. I could buy a new machine for about $75. Either way I can't afford it at the moment, so I guess I'll pull out my old crayon box and get to work. :)

Have an Epson 1290 about 4-5 years old. When printing photos it has started printing vertical lines of small black dots through the photos, which it does only on photo quality paper, not on plain paper. Any suggestions how to stop it.

Re: Re: epson printer by Anonymous (1/29/06 7:29 AM) + / -
Thanks again Wes. I just checked the site and they don't list that as an item in stock. So, as it instructs, I emailed them the part number you gave me and will wait to see what they have to say.

I'll report back so others will know.

Hummmm - last message is from me, but it sez anonymous? Musta done something wrong............

Re: epson printer by RubyRose (2/2/06 8:21 PM) + / -
Wes,

I told you I'd tell you how it went and I'm sorry this is so long, but maybe it will help another poor soul out there.

Well, I tried everything. I got counter reset instructions at http://blog.e-omni.tw/modules/newbb/reply.php?forum and tried their method multiple times with no success what-so-ever. So I kept Googling for help and found that program "sscserve" before you told me about it. I downloaded it and it did absolutely nothing.

So I went to the address you gave me, http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/14360#241 and got more instructions. These told me (and showed me with photos) how to take my printer apart. It said if I didn't have new waste ink pads I could still reset by first rinsing the current pads in water. Folks - this is one GIANT, filthy toner mess, but I didn't give up and got about 1/2 the ink out. I'm happy to say the toner everywhere looked awful, but cleaned up without much fuss.

I let the pads dry a little overnight cuz I figured they'd seem just as 'filled up' as they did with the toner and I'd get overflowing messes. I'd had enough mess, thank you. The next day the printer got put back together with the 1/2 clean pads and though the reset program now said it had done it's job, I continued to get nothing but the blinking lights. It didn't really fix the problem.

I contacted compassmicro.com, as you suggested, and got a quick response saying the pads were about $10.50 each and I'd need two. Then add to that a modest $5 shipping fee and there was an investment of $25 and I didn't even know if it would work. $25 could be a good portion of a new machine, thought I. I struggled with this and shopped on line all day long for a couple of days. I finally gave in yesterday and purchased a new Epson CX4800. With store specials and company rebates, the "Printer, Scanner, Copier with a digital camera card reader in it that would work with or without a computer", and many nice other features would end up costing about$75. With the $25 I DIDN'T spend on pads, the printer only cost me about $50.

Tonight I went to un-pack the new machine and before removing the old 640 from it's spot, I gave one more shot at resetting useing those instructions from http://blog.e-omni.tw/modules/newbb/reply.php?forum .

You guessed it - it worked! How nuts is that? The machine is working just as nicely as it always had again.

But.........I'm keeping the new one and my son, who has 'no' printer at all is ordering the new pads and keeping the 640 and my current scanner. "All's well that ends well", they say. Thank you so much for your help.

M.J.

I have the exact same problem with my RX500 -- somehow during installation of a new Continuous Ink system, I managed to get a spring to come loose and now I can not get my printer to feed itself paper. I need very detailed instructions perferably with pictures on how to get this spring re-attached. The Spring is about 2.5 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Can anyone help?

Re: Could anyone help me? by Anonymous (3/3/06 3:38 PM) + / -
Yes;
Goto Start
pic PRINTERS
rt click on your particular printer
pic PROPERTIES
pic PRINTING PREFERENCES
pic DRAFT
this uses less ink but, you will get less quality and higher speeds.

Re: HELP --1200 epson printer problem -- HELP by J&J (6/1/06 1:37 PM) + / -
I have a 1200 epson stylus photo printer which is flashing all three lights (paper out light, black ink light & color ink light). The manual says I may have an internal error and to contact your Espon dealer. Has anyone had this problem and if so could you shed some light on a resolution. I love the printer but considering its several years old , I'm not sure it warrants a
costly repair.
Thanks for any responses

I have an Epson Stylus C84, and I usually replace them with generic ink and everything works fine, until recently I changed ink seller. And now it prints 2 vertical black long stripes all along the page and throws black ink blobs on both sides of paper. I cleaned the head many times, did the alignment, but still prints gargabe. Can anyone help please? Thanks

Re: epson printer by redpatchouli (8/28/06 4:29 AM) + / -
My epson cx4600 sends me a message that says "paper jam."
I follow the prompt box every time, even though there IS no paper jam, and occasionally it will print; ;most of the time, it won't, just keeps sending me an error box saying 'paper jam.'
I had the same problem one month after i bought it, during which it was covered under warranty and the company sent me a brand new one. (they said it was an internal problem). Now that it's not under warranty (of course! It's about one and a half yrs old), I'm wondering if there's something i can do to fix it re drivers, cleaning, etc...or do i have to buy a new one? (alas and alack, i JUST bought the ink cartridges@!!!!!)

Hello, I have a epson rx500 and the casing the ink is in wont close. I think the casing the ink is held in has a spring or lock of some kind that is missing. The ink cartage unit slides over , but stops because I cant close the lid that the ink is in. Hope you understand. I need parts where to find them. Monica

My RX500 has a problem, it seems to shut down after about 5-10 minutes of usage. I can power it back on, then it will shut off again within a minute. If you let it sit for a while, it will run for another 5-10 minutes, but then it is off again. It is out of warranty now. :( Thanks.

Re: epson printer c80 by Anonymous (9/27/06 8:46 PM) + / -
The damn thing has been set to print black only, but won't print due to the magenta cartridge not being compatible and causing an error.

Is there anyway around the software from preventing the printer from printing when there is an error with one of the color cartridges?

Need help with GENERAL ERROR - epson R320 Printer by evergreen (10/1/06 11:16 AM) +4 + / -
Hello,

I am frustrated with a "General error" on my Epson R320 Photo printer. I was originally having trouble with the DVD tray, it would act like it was going to print and then eject.
At that time, I probably had unprinted documents that were in the queue, so I deleted them, now I am faced with a "General error" - see your printer documentation about clearning the error.
I have tried EVERYTHING, including holding down the POWER and STOP buttons until the error goes off (tried that 5 or 6 times)...the error light goes off, but the printer won't turn off using this method and I still have to unplug it from the power strip to get it to come back on.....

I am just about ready to throw this printer in the garbage (it's less than a year old) and buy a new photo printer...

CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIX THIS TODAY?

Thanks,

Robert

RE: C60.
I refill my black ink cartridges when needed on a HP and Lexmark printer and never had problems.
Did the same,(1st time) on my C60 and the printer
will not recognize that it has ink.
Went thru several attempts following the printers
"how to" instructions and get to the cartridge
"charging, please wait a moment" step.
Then it goes to the ink cartridge page with the black ink cartridge 'X'ed out with statement tht the cartridge needs replacment.

IT JUST WONT RECOGNIZE THAT IT HAS INK.
PLEASE HELP. THANK YOU

YOU NEED TO RESET THE CHIP ON THE INK CARTRIDGE. FOR THAT YOU WILL NEED A CHIP RESETTER.

Re: epson printer by rodH (10/18/06 9:22 PM) + / -
OK, so I have an Epson RX500. Was running aftermarket cartidges. I went to take them out and refill them. I put them back in and notice the error light it on (I actually think it may have been on before then). Now the printer wont work at all. It says "Printer Error" and has the red light on. I can't get it to do anything. I have cartridges that are supposed to reset the comp/chip, but In the intructions it does state to NOT take out the cartridges once you install them?

When I go to turn it on, the cartridges move from right to left, them back right again. The error message does NOT appear until it gets to the very end on the RIGHT were the sponges are or what ever that unit is. I did touch this to try and figure out what it was, and it was absolutely saturated in ink, so I put a cloth on it to soak some ink up. It still doesn't work.

What can be wrong?

Chip not resetting?
Too much ink in the cartridges?
Sponges soaked/dirty?
