look in the printer where the ink cartrige plugs in you should see a long strip going from one side to the other. make sure it is clean a can of air shoud do this. if not it will take more testing to see if it is the logic board or the encoder sensor or strip. probably an expensive fix.
When 'we' took out X83 apart, we noticed that the encoder strip was not on track with the rear of the carriage, check this, else the carriage will slam both left, and sometimes right, (it seems to have derailed, and after that it slammed the carriage). best of luck and I thought I would put my two cents in... Else its an ok unit...

I have had this problem when I first got my lexmark x83.. and through a thread i was able to fix it, and it never happens anymore. There is grey encoder strip running behind the cartridge caddy, the whole length. This strip must be in a metal guide located behind the caddy. you cant see the guide, which makes it kind of hard to slip the strip in. However, you can take off the right side panel of the printer (no screws, it just snaps off) and wich a flashlight you can see behind the caddy. The guide looks like a square, upside-down metal hook on the back of the caddy. MAKE SURE THE PRINTER IS UNPLUGGED, then slide the caddy to the center. looking through the side panel u just removed, position the grey encoder strip in the guide. When you power the printer back on, it should be fine.

I'm here trying to find out how to disassemble a Lexmark X83. This thread says just snap off the side panel. On my unit, there are 3 tabs holding the side panels in place from the bottom. When they are released, the sides are still held by some means that I can not see near the top. Someone had success, so I must be missing something.

Chuck I just took mine apart. Mine has two tabs on the bottom, and one tab at the top in the rear. If you just start pulling from the front, and sort of pry up from the bottom, you should be able to remove the panel. The two bottom tabs sort of dig downward, thats why you might have to pry up somewhat. On the other hand, just a little bit of force mus do it also. Good luck!

Your answer on removing the sides to the x83 was great! In fact I removed both sides on it was easy as pie to put in the new encoder strip. I had problems with a carrier stall when printing. I thought the encoder strip was bad, so I bought a new one. The only problem is tho that the new encoder strip didn't work. Even tho I did put the strip behind the sensor, it slammed to the left. After several tries, I finally put the old one back on, and is still works, but I still have the original problem. After the printer goes into power save, the first time I try to print, it goes into a power stall, with a error message of 000. The paper goes down only half way and stops. I have to keep turning off and restarting the printer for a couple of times toallow the printer to kick in. It looks like the encoder strip got splattered with ink and I thought that was the problem. Thats why I bought a new strip, which does'nt seem to work.
if ur strip is broken, ur basically screwed. you might be able to get a replacement strip from lexmark, but the X83 is discontinued model, so im not sure how the part replacement policy works.
I am so happy I found this site! I was ready to hurl this thing out the door! I changed the ink cartridge and it would just slam the cartridge feeder to the left no matter what I did! I have changed the ink before and it has always worked! This saved me a few hundred dollars! I was ready to go buy a new printer tomorrow! I will be getting a company printer soon- I hope this fix lasts until then!

Many thanks for your helpful instructions on fixing the carriage jam problem on the X83. By cleaning the encoder strip and resetting it in the upside down hook mechanism, my printer is now working properly. Thanks again for your very helpful posting.

I had a problem where the cartridge would slam and got error j e. I called Lexmark customer service, they walked me through some troubleshooting steps that didn't work. Then they took my serial number asked when I got printer. I told them it was a gift I had recieved a couple months ago Aug. 8 and they asked for my address and sent me a new printer and a shipping slip to return old one. I didn't have to provide proof of purchase or anything. They have excellent customer service, I just hope this one works!
