i have officejet pro 1150c, and on device display appears x211 error. What kind of error is this?

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (10/28/03 12:30 PM) reply + / -
It is a non specific error for a failed internal assembly, either a cable or electronics. I speculate that it is an electronic problem, either the carriage board or the main board. It was a good machine but not immortal. Maybe someone would like to have it for parts.

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Paul (1/23/04 5:38 AM) reply + / -
I, too, have an OfficeJet 1150c with a problem, but that reports a different error message: x121.

This message is presented at what I think is the very end of the startup sequence, in that it starts immediately after the panel has displayed "Printing / Normal." Also, if it makes any difference, beginning at the same time the Error Message first appears, the green light on the panel continuously flashes quickly. Then, the unit will not either print or copy at all.

Can you tell me what this error message means and whether it results from something I might be able to fix myself?

I already called HP support, got dinged for their $30 support fee, was transferred to an (apparently) Indian Support Tech who wouldn't (or couldn't) tell me what the error messages means, kept putting me on hold for long periods of time, then finally had me unplug and replug the unit, followed by holding down the ON and RESUME buttons at the same time. After this procedure didn't work, he said that was all he could do and that I would have to take it to a service facility - he recommended Radio Shack - and pay for repairs. Frankly, I did not consider that to be very helpful support for my money.

I imagine I could replace this unit with a new PSC 1210 for less than $100 and probably have a better printer and at least as good a scanner. However, since this thing cost me over $700 when I bought it in 1997, if there's something I can do myself to make it run again (other than giving it to Radio Shack and risking a hugh repair bill), I'd like to do so.

Any help or ideas?

Thanks,
Paul

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (1/23/04 9:44 AM) reply + / -
See my 10/28/2003 post. I do not recommend the PSC 1210. It uses the lowest capacity cartridges. You will be better off long term with a PSC 1350.

If you can get by with a fax style scanner, the Officejet K80 is much cheaper to operate than most of the newest models. You can get them new on Ebay at a significant discount.

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Paul (1/23/04 6:21 PM) reply + / -
Thanks for the advice on the 1210 vs 1350 -- I thought they were the same except for the memory card/stick reader.

If I'm up in the 1350 price range, though, that's about the same price as for the Epson 6400 (with the current rebate). Any thoughts on that Epson vs. the HPs?

Also, out of curiosity -- do you know what the x121 means? (I mis-typed it as "x211" in my earlier message.)

Paul

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (1/23/04 9:30 PM) reply + / -
HP wasn't specific in the service manual concerning the error code. It may mean something to insiders but they are not sharing it with the outside world. All they say is something like this, "If changing that assembly doesn't fix it, change this assembly."

Not many people come to the shop with Epsons these days, but when they do it is nearly always with clogged print heads. I understand that Epsons produce great print quality, but the printhead is built in and you are going to get hit with a significant bill if it fails. I have never replaced an Epson printhead because when people hear the price they scrap them. If you are seriously considering Epson, I would check this forum to get an overview of the kinds of problems people are having and the solutions.

HP inkjets fit my printer worldview because I can do a repair at a price people are willing to pay (I can’t speak for the newest models because they haven’t been in for repair yet). I also believe it is a better value in many cases to fix them rather than buying new, because the older models are usually cheaper to operate (that’s why I mentioned the slightly out of date OJ K80). I regularly repair Deskjets that are over five years old. I would have been eager to tell you how to resuscitate your OJ 1150 if I thought it was possible. I've worked on lots of them and typically all they need is 'mechanical tune-up'.

All printers are eventually going need some kind of repair. What I buy and recommend are printers that will not automatically go to the landfill when the cost of repair is considered. A general rule: Cheap printers are cheap to buy but not cheap to operate and some of them are down right unreliable.

my printer cannot lift paper to print
tells me out of paper even when paPER IS LOADED.
WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (2/12/04 11:22 AM) reply + / -
Remove the paper input tray and clean the feed rollers with a damp cloth. If that solves the problem, use rubber rejuvenator as a long term solution.

i'm having the paper loading problem as well w/ my OJ 1150C... i've done the cleaning procedures and that didn't help.. whenever i do it, it seems to work to start w/, but then it messes up again. so i'm guessing its a mechanical problem.. can anyone tell me where i can order the replacement parts for it?

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (2/29/04 9:32 PM) reply + / -
If the paper is lifting and the paper feed rollers are turning when you try to print, and the paper doesn't feed, you have a slick roller problem. I have repaired lots of these and once the rollers are properly cleaned and reconditioned, they always pick up paper. Get the rubber rejuvenator mentioned in my last post. Also, make sure the paper is pushed in far enough for the paper to be picked up.

The feed rollers are not available as a spare part and you have to disassemble the whole machine to replace them.

I took my unit apart to get to the paper jamb, and now it tells me to unlock the scanner with the green knob, but it's absolutely not locked. I suspect that when I removed the toothed belt from the scanner positioner servo motor drive I took it out of sync. Any hints?

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Ralph (3/6/04 4:02 PM) reply + / -
I purchased my office jet pro 1150C in 1996 and have never experienced any problems since day one. I recently had noted a faded, streaking in the black ink printing. I thought it needed a new black cartridge so I installed a HP45 black cartridge. The problem still existed so I removed the black cartridge & noted pooling of black ink on either side of the nozzle plate. I cleaned it off, installed it, ran a test page and the problem still existed. I put in yet another new HP45 black cartridge and the pooling of black ink on either side of the nozzle plate was noted. I contacted HP tech support and hesitated to commit to a $30.00 guessing game so I searched the web for a site like this to hopefully find an answer. It seems as though there is something inside the printer itself that is causing the new cartridges to pool this ink and not print correctly. The color cartridge HP41A is printing correctly and no evidence of ink pooling is noted.
P.S. there is no error message on the LCD display

Thank you for your anticipated assistance.

Ralph

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (3/6/04 7:03 PM) reply+1 + / -
The odds are extremely good that your printing problem is caused by ink build up in the service station. Open the cartridge access door and unplug the power. Remove the right side cover. There is one T10 Torx screw in the rear holding it in place. If you don't have the Torx driver, you can get them at a hardware store or a tool specialty store. After the side cover is removed, remove one screw and the service station will slide out. A 'mountain' of ink builds up in the service station and eventually reaches the top. If the top of it is flat, the cartridges are hitting it and getting clogged. Remove as much of much of the congealed ink as possible with a slot style screwdriver. It's a little messy so you may want to wear latex gloves. Immerse the service station in hot water and most of the remaining ink will dissolve.

Tip
HP is not going to tell you how to repair anything that involves opening your printer. Calls are punctuated by long pauses while they are reading a canned response, particularly if you talk to someone in India.

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Ralph (3/7/04 3:24 PM) reply + / -
Dear Bert:

We had a torx set in our tool box so we removed the side panel and pulled out the service station as you instructed. WOW WHAT A GLOB OF INK MESS !!!! I can't believe the amount of ink clumps that were laying in this serivce station box, large enough to pullout and measure. Once the large pieces of ink globs were removed we hesitated to soak it but realized that it was all made plastic and rubber so we filled the kitchen sink & soaked it in very hot water. We lifted the service station hundreds of times to rinse it out. We did use mild soap and rinsed thoroughly, dried it out by gently shaking the service station. Installed the service station back and it's printing like NEW !!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR PROMPT,COURTEOUS & INVALUABLE HELP. This printer has not printed this crisply since it was new. You wonder why the cartridges run out of ink so quickly . . . A lot of ink is stored in this service station and is wasted. The HP company was so ready for us to trade this unit in for a newer unit plus cash. It's no wonder, it would have been a simple fix for them to do and then resell it. THANKS AGAIN,

Ralph

I just got a new 1150 at the office as well, and assembled it to run for testing purposes. Now, however, I need to disassemble it so that I can put it back in it's box and ship it to our user in the Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to remove the bottom half of the paper input tray. Is this designed to fit permanently once attached, or is there a trick to it?

Re: how to unblock catridge carriage by Anonymous (11/30/05 4:13 PM) reply + / -
I had the same problem occur on my HP officejet 1150C. Upon opening the ink cartridge door next to the glass copy plate, I noted that the cartridge carrier was moving fully to the LEFT on the rod so one couldn't change the cartridge.

Underneath the rod is a white geared wheel and on top of that is a black plastic sliding arm. This arm was wedged on TOP of the white geared wheel. By moving the black plastic arm to the right, dislodging it from the geared wheel, this allowed the print cartridge carrier to move fully to the LEFT again.

Upon restarting the printer it all seemed to operated properly and no error appeared.

Hope this helps you.

Hi there everyone

my 1150 C won't accept neither the old nor a brand new original color cartridge anymore and displays the message "change color cartridge" regardless how often I wriggled it or cleaned the terminals of the cartridge and replaced it.

Anyone with an idea I would very much appreciate a hint from on what to look for. I am technically quite versatile and I am not afraid to take the whole printer apart if necessary.

having said that, does anyone know where I could download a service manual ?

thanx very much

Greg,

You also have to put a few drops of lubricant on the carriage rail, (shiny rod).

Synthetic or silicone based light oil only, avoid sprays.

Thank you for the invaluable help with our 1150c printer. I had the same exact problem - HUGE build-up of old ink. Followed your steps and got the results like it was new again. We were considering buy a new printer but not now!! My only clarification to your steps is to open the side panel on the right side WHEN FACING the printer from the front (opposite the printer access area). And, the single screw is in the CENTER not the screw towards the back.

Again, thank you much for your post.

Hi there,
Has any one any bright ideas!
My HP Officejet Pro 1150c works fine, but it will not switch off.
When I press the main power off button, bottom right, there is a sound like the internal fan accelerating and the three small green lights on the display keep flashing.
When the power off button is pressed again, it goes into the start-up mode and works fine.
I can only turn it off if I remove the power cord.
Does this mean that the on/off switch is stuffed?

thanks,

Steve

Perhaps the paper is too thick. Go to the Users Manual specifications pages and take note of the maximum paper weight that can be used.

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (9/27/07 3:25 PM) reply + / -
A new scanner head costs around $300 online, less for a used one. The P/N is C5300-60106. You can replace it fairly easily yourself if you want to spend that much money.

If the bulb still lights up, you can also try cleaning the scanner mirror and the underside of the scanner glass. The mirror is in the slot parallel to the bulb. Use a cotton swab dampened with a cleaner like Windex. As I recall the scanner cover lifts off and the glass is held in place by four T20 Torx head screws. The screws in the front are hidden under snap-on covers.

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (11/6/07 2:01 PM) reply + / -
Blot the color cartridge print nozzles on a damp paper towel a few times for two seconds. You should see yellow, magenta, and cyan flowing freely. If you do not the cartridge is defective in spite of ink being in it.

The printing side of this unit is only printing half of the page and then not feeding the page out fully. So the last 1/4 of the page is left in the printer even though it thinks it has finished printing. Also the side bars open and then close as if it thinks it has finished printing. You have to manually pull the paper out with only half the page printed. CAn you advise, thanks.

Remove the paper tray by squeezing the release levers on the bottom and then clean the large rubber feed rollers with water. If that helps I suggest using rubber rejuvenator on this particular model.

Thanks for the response, but cleaning these rollers did not help. The printing just seems to stop half way down the page, the printer does not seem to be evening trying to print the rest of the information on the page, or clear the page from the around the spindle. Hence about 1/4 of the A4 page is still stuck around the spindle. It is picking up the paper OK and printing right at the top. Thanks

Test the printer on different applications to see if the problem is consistent. If the problem persists, first, make sure that the computer-printer cable is good and connected solidly on both ends. Second, uninstall and reinstall the printer driver. Third, test the printer on another computer. If the problem continues there may be a hardware problem in the printer.

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (7/22/08 5:47 PM) reply + / -
Remove the paper tray by pressing the large latch on the underside.

If the printer has fed multiple sheets of paper, pull paper out of the center of the stack to relieve the pressure and then slowly pull the paper out of the feed rollers.

If paper fed at an angle and seems to be irreversibly jammed the print mechanism will have to be partially disassembled to remove it.

If you are interested in disassembling it let me know and I will try to remember the steps required. Removing the case is somewhat involved.

Our 1150C decided to kinda die. It only lites the little green lite now. At first it got stuck on 'warming up' and then the liquid crystal screen became duller and duller and now just the green lite is on. Won't go off with the power button. Tried different power cords and removed the printer cable to eliminate any possibility of a short. no help. Advice? Absolutely hate to pack the dumpster with it, it's been bullet proof up until now.

Re: hp officejet pro 1150c by Bert (2/11/09 10:21 PM) reply + / -
Does the printer show signs of life other than the scanner error and fading display, e.g. do the cartridges present themselves to be changed when you open the access door? If not remove the rear panel and check the power supply voltages. (Sorry, I can't tell you what the voltages should be.) You will need a T20 Torx head driver. The power supply P/N is C5300-60001.

The Control Panel P/N is C5300-60009.

If you get the printer back in operation remove the scanner glass and clean the underside and the mirror in the slot next to scanner lamp using a cotton swab. The glass is held in place by four T20 Torx head screws, two in the front under small covers and two in the rear. If the cleaning fails to solve the problem replace the scanner lamp. thanks for that Bert.
The short answer is 'no'. The printer is dead other than the little green lite now. I can't even turn it on or off at all either.
I'll pull the rear cover and check the power supply and let you know. It'll have to wait though. I'll get back to you.
thanks again

ps It acts like a failed powerpack, but measuring the output will confirm this, I understand.

Hi Bert

Many thanks for your service station cleaning advice!!

I Have two questions:
1) Can the sponge in the service station be removed and cleaned?
2) When re-inserting the service station into the printer, do the cartridge caps have to be in any particular position?

Looking forward to your reply.
Darryl

Power on the printer and open the cartridge access door to disengage the carriage from the service station.

Looking from the front, there is a cover on the right side held in place by one Torx head screw (can't remember whether it's a T10 or T20). Remove the screw and the cover will slide off.

Remove the T10 Torx head screw that holds the service station in place and slide it out. Scrap out as much congealed ink as possible and soak the service station in hot water. Trying to remove the sponge is not worth the trouble.

Reinstall the service station with the rotary mechanism in the same position it was in when removed.

Hi Bert,
Hp1150c gives scanner bulb failure message. Bulb lights fine. is there a photo sensor in the machine to replace?
Or will miror cleaning help? Thank you for your help.

Although the bulb still functions they age to the point where they are unusable. You may be able to compensate for the aging by cleaning the bulb and mirror (in the slot parallel to the bulb). Use a Windex type cleaner. Also clean the underside of the glass.

If all else fails a few enterprising individuals have replaced the scanner bulb. Its going to take some ingenuity since there is no direct replacement available, only generic parts. You can get one from the source below. Select the closest length and diameter.

The scanner glass is held in place by four T20 Torx head screws, two in the front under snap-on covers and two in the back.

Hello Bert, my printer I believe is beginning to show its ageing. It is printing un-evenly, with horizontal 'streaks' of white. I've changed the cartridge but the problem remains. Can you give some advice on how to proceed?

Regards, and thanks in advance.

Jorge.

There is a good chance that ink build up from priming the cartridges has accumulated in the service station to the point where it is hitting the cartridge nozzles.

Power on the printer and open the cartridge access door to disengage the carriage from the service station.

Looking from the front, there is a cover on the right side held in place by one T10 Torx head screw. Remove the screw and the cover will slide off.

Remove the T10 Torx head screw that holds the service station in place and slide it out. Scrap out as much congealed ink as possible and soak the service station in hot water to dissolve the remaining ink. Wear latex gloves in order to avoid ink stains on your hands.

Reinstall the service station with the rotary mechanism in the same position it was in when removed.

Hello Bert, well you did it again; the "white streaks" disappeared after following your instructions. I was very surprised about this though since I had a similar problem before but the streaks were black. Well, I do appreciate very much your help on this.

With My Very Best Regards,

Jorge.
