 | HP Deskjet 3820 by BJ (10/27/03 1:47 PM) | +11 + / - | The cartridge cradle of my 3820 is jammed...will not move from home position on the right. Any fixes?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (10/27/03 5:55 PM) | + / - | Printer is a disposable one. No fixes except sending it to landfill. You can either buy another disposable 3820 for $39.95 or spend some more money and get a good deskjet that doesn't use expensive half-filled ink cartridges.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Herb (10/29/03 1:57 AM) | + / - | In the UK at least, the 3820 uses the 6578 and 6615 cartridges which are not a bad price per ml. The 3420 however uses the 8727 and 8728 cartridges which do indeed have outrageously small capacity cartridges.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (10/29/03 9:25 AM) | + / - | FYI: Cartridges
As Herb says, the HP 15 (25 ml) cartridge is not among the least filled cartridges, but it is short filled. It is physically the same as the HP 45 (42 ml) but not compatable with printers that shipped with the HP 15 by design. The HP 15 can be used in at least some printers that shipped with a HP 45, but who would want to.
Bottom Line: Seek out printers that use the HP 45 Cartridge. The only current models I know of are the DJ 6122 and DJ 995. There models in the 700, 800, and 900 series, all out of production, that also use it.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by gb (11/10/03 8:58 PM) | + / - | Mine just did the same thing after replacing the black (original) cartridge. I can manually move the cradle, but it heads back home. Seems a shame to chunk it as it might just be firmware or something.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (11/10/03 10:07 PM) | + / - | gb It is indeed a shame but there is nothing you can do. If it's out of warranty HP will not offer you any solution other than selling you a new printer. Consider the whole episode a learning experience. See my last post in this thread. If you get a DJ 6122 the cartridges will not be a loss.
I once got blamed for a DJ 3820 konking out because I had recently worked on the system that used it.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by gb (11/14/03 10:14 PM) | +1 + / - | I repair printers for a living so casually putting them in the trash it not what I’m all about. I encourage people to have their 'old' printers repaired because I genuinely believe it is a better value than buying a new printer, unless they need different capabilities. Why do you think I spend so much time on this forum? My only compensation is the satisfaction of saving repairable equipment from the landfill.
All DJ printers will eventually need service. I regularly repair models that are approaching 10 years old. All they generally need is a mechanical 'tune-up', but if the electronics has failed, fairly rare, they are instant parts machines. People will not spend $150-$200 to repair a typical inkjet printer.
The DJ 3820 was made for a price driven market, i.e. the customer wants a 'deal' and the seller 'throws in' a cheap printer with the computer. All HP and others are doing is filling the demand and making a profit by selling short-filled cartridges. If you have an argument with the repairability and reliability, take it up with HP. All I know is that you can't repair them without parts and/or documentation. Check for yourself. http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=modinfo&model=DESKJE T_3820

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by scribla (12/11/03 8:26 AM) | + / - | I have two of these at work with the same problem.
I've found the problem is caused a by broken gear which is failing to lift the cleaning carriage up to the heads. As there are no parts availible, both of these will be going in the trash. I agree its a waste but I have to agree the best thing to do in this situation is trash them. It was bareley worth my hourly rate to take the cover off in the first place.

Rob, are you interested in buying my printer too?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Lisa (1/12/04 5:46 PM) | + / - | What a piece of crap!! I got about 5 total printed pages out of the thing in ten months, and it has said, "out of paper" ever since. I took off the back cover, and broke off the little pieces that hold the back cover on. Now, it will never print again, as the sensors will probably never pick up that the back cover is on. I have reinstalled the drivers, used new cables, NOTHING!! I may hurl it out the window and watch it crash for fun. Lesson learned. And I didn't pay $40, I think I paid $100.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Chris (2/1/04 8:12 AM) | + / - | Just wanted to add my name to the list of people here with the same experience. The carraige (sp?) is stuck right and when I massage it loose it gives error codes and loses communication with the pc (haven't figured that one out). I had it for about 1 year and printed between 500 - 1000 pages.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (2/2/04 1:05 PM) | + / - | This is really f*@#ed. I've had this printer for just over a year (long enough for the warrenty to run out) and it's the same problem as everyone else. The cartridge is stuck on the right, but I can't move it around at all... so now I have to buy a WHOLE new printer?! This angers me beyond belief.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Denny Conway (2/4/04 5:35 PM) | + / - | Anonymous: Its even worse than you think, because the HP Deskjet only came with a 90 day guarantee. Judging by the numbers of posts I've read on the 3820's various problems, it seems that it was lucky to even last past the 90 day warranty. The following post by MOE says it all: MOE, dated 10/27/2003 @ 08:59:01: Re: HP 3820 Cradle Slams Left. I'm going to agree with Jon and Bert. These are disposable printers that come with a 90 day guarantee. They're not even worth giving repair advice on because there are no parts available. Toss it and either buy another disposable $39.95 3820 with new ink cartridges or pay a little more and buy a decent printer. All sub $100 printers are disposable...Sorry, but almost every 3820 that has these wierd type problems, is not worth repairing, because they are so inexpensive to start with...Denny Conway

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Denny Conway (2/5/04 10:24 AM) | + / - | Rich: I'm not sure if you telling us that you actually need english drivers or not, but in case you do need them: After deinstalling/removing your old printer drivers, go to the HP WEB SITE and download the latest drivers for your printer and system. You can then go to this link: " http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/siteHome.jhtml;jsessionid=Q3DY24QHVPPRLQE XGR5UNZQ?reg=nam&cc=us&pagetype=sitehome&lc=en " on the Hp web-site and procede to download the needed printer drivers...FOR HP PRINTERS, PRIOR TO DOWNLOADING NEW DRIVERS, IF YOU ARE RELOADING THE EXACT SAME PRINTER DRIVERS: First you should open your "Control Panel Utility", then open the "Add/Remove Programs", then under "Install/Uninstall", highlight and REMOVE any old Printer Drivers that may already be installed. Sometimes the same older drivers can be corrupted and conflict with newer drivers...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Kim (2/5/04 4:11 PM) | +2 + / - | HAVING PROBLEMS WITH HP3820!!!!! It's clinking or chinging when trying to print. At first I thought something is wrong with the roller. Then it said something about the color cartridge being installed wrong and my husband took it out (it was stuck in the corner at first) and cleaned both cartridges off. Both bottom lights are flashing green and orange. Would love help. My husband says that's it with these, he won't buy another printer because they break down wants to just throw it away. I want to print out my baby's pictures on them. Any advice would be wonderful. Thanks...KIM

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Lisa (2/5/04 4:40 PM) | + / - | Kim, I have the same problem! It started by saying there was a paper jam ( there wasn't). It told me it was low on ink so I went out and bought black and color ink. Now both lights are flashing and the ink heads won't move properly. Since I spent almost $90 on ink I went out and tried to find a printer that uses the same ink cartridges. Guess what? No one sells them. They tell me they are obsolete. I want to scream! I think HP engineered these with a self destruct code! Planned obsolescence. Lisa

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Denny Conway (2/5/04 4:44 PM) | + / - | Kim: I'm sorry, but your husband is more or less right about those inexpensive ink jet printers. Unfortunatly, any printer under $100.00 is basically thought of as being disposable in the Printer Industry. If you were to do a search under the HP Deskjet 3820, you would see that there's been a lot of problems with the 3820, just on this Printer Repair Site alone...You might be interested in these previous replies: by JON, dated 9/28/2003 @ 11:01:37 Re: HP 3820 Cradle Slams Left. You get new ink cartridges which cost more than the printer...OR...BERT, dated 9/29/2003 @ 00:26:11 Re: HP 3820 Cradle Slams Left. Second Opinion. The 3820 is a relatively new printer and judging from the number of posts I see, it is generally trouble prone. The 3820 is a low cost printer and it's reliability seems correspondingly low. I agree with Jon when he advises getting a new printer, but if you can afford it get a Deskjet 6122 instead. I believe the 6122 went out of production recently but it is still a best buy if you print a lot. The black cartridge contains nearly two times as much ink and you get a duplexer that allows hands off double sided printing...OR...MOE, dated 10/27/2003 @ 08:59:01: Re: HP 3820 Cradle Slams Left. | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Paul (2/7/04 5:26 PM) | + / - | Oh, why had I not known of this problem before I bought this printer over a year ago? (Yes, it actually worked this long.) I just had a feeling something wasn't right when I bought it with my (coincidentally HP) digital camera. First of all, I could've waited longer and gotten a much better camera for the.. $200 or $300 I spent on the camera, and a better printer than this piece of crap that just decided to break down today. At least it wasn't when I was writing my term paper.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Marie (2/8/04 8:31 PM) | + / - | Sometimes my printer doesn't print blocks of text from Word (about 2-6 lines, in a perfect rectangle, on either the left or right of the page). It's not a very consistent problem, and it's very annoying (the missing chunks aren't always immediately noticeable, and I send out documents missing some text). I've checked the margins on Word. They seem fine. Is this a problem with the printer or with my computer? or the connection between the two? I've noticed this happens more often when I'm doing several things at once on the computer (opening other documents, using the web). Thanks.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Leigh (2/19/04 9:06 AM) | + / - | I have a 3820. The 14 ml black ink cartridge ran out and I bought the 25ml replacement cartridges. When I put the new cartridges in, the ink light flashes constantly and an error msg pops up that says "Incompatible ink cartridge". Arrggh. When I called HP they said it was out of warranty.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (2/19/04 10:14 AM) | + / - | I suspect that HP told you to clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts. If you have not, use a cotton swab moistened with water. Also, there is always the possibility that you have a defective cartridge. I always advise testing them on a known working compatable printer. Any DJ 900 series will work.
If replacement is is called for, don't put your money into another cheap printer. A DJ 6122 can purchased on eBay at bargain prices. See my 10/29/2003 post on this thread.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by James (2/24/04 12:41 PM) | + / - | Reading all the posts, I have to just sit back and laugh. My company sold a couple of these and they came back straight out of the box when they wouldnt print. Calling HP proved nothing more than my blood pressure could rise as high as it did. I, of course, was told that it had but a 30 day warranty on it and i of course had passed the date. But, he also told me that had I bought the printer from WalMart, then I would have had a 1 year warranty. Even though we are a reseller for HP. Bunch of cheap crap printers they are. I could believe the response to you Bert from GB as though you were the one that had made the printer yourself. Too funny. I am always looking for more people as resources for printer repair andi think that I have came across a great forum to do so. Thanks Bert, Moe, Herb, and Denny. Hey Steve, I have a few of these printers if you are still intersted in buying them before they head to the landfill.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Toymaster (2/28/04 8:59 PM) | + / - | Well, looks like I am in the same boat now...I was trying to print some envelopes on the DJ3820 under Word...I got two of them to print then the third one something happened to the printer. Now, it trys to clear a paper jam everytime I turn it on. And then the resume light and power light flash...all t his after the heads move from right to left then crashed into the pins for the paper cause they stick up as it is trying to clear the jam and I have no way to reset to printer at all. I bought this printer Christmas 2002 on sale for about $50.00

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Copymannathan (2/28/04 9:27 PM) | + / - | Reading all of these, it sounds like a definite case of "you get what you paid for"; I spent $400 on an HP 870c back in '96; I've put at least a case of paper through it since then (including envelopes and card stock) and it still runs like new. I've heard HP has gone downhill since then...

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by David C (2/28/04 10:53 PM) | + / - | I have read all posts. We have a fairly strong commitment to th 3820. I puzzle why some will run for years and others fail quickly. My testing confirms a design weekness in the cartridge service unit that destroys the nylon peg on the final drive gear. After repairing one unit twicw and watching the peg be destroyed each time I suspected the electronics. However I took the unit repaired for the third time and placed it in a printer that had an been operating another unit with no problems. The peg was destroyed again. Not the electronics. It is a problem with the mechanism not necessarily the peg. If it is the peg, yet to be proved with an original gear assembly, then it must be very strong. Maybe HP made cheaper batches gears that fail. Some say there are no parts But I have a copy of an HP document that states parts will be available for five years after production ceases. These printers are made in Singapore and they are still on their web site, so perhaps they are still in production. Anyway parts should be available. Any comments ????

|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (2/29/04 1:41 AM) | + / - | Dave C I stand by my post on 11/15/2003. If there are parts available, HP is not willing to make them available to US customers (see the web page below). As far as I can tell, the DJ 3820 is out of production as far as the US market is concerned. The fundamental problem with the DJ 3820 is HP's attempt to save a few cents on parts. They cheapened a reliable cartridge service unit design by removing its drive motor and replacing it with a cheap coupler to the paper feed drive. I took two into our shop as scrap to satisfy my curiosity as to why the carriages were hanging up. Aside from the broken cartridge service unit drive, I noticed that only one carriage rod lubrication/cleaning felt was installed on both, a few more cents saved. HP took a reasonably solid design that was used in the DJ 900 series and turned it into a PR boondoggle. They reconfirmed the saying, “If it works don’t fix it.” http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=modinfo&model=DESKJE T_3820

 | Reject the Unreliability by Nick (3/2/04 1:15 PM) | + / - | Here is my advice...
Want a printer that will last, you can fix almost every problem with it because there are detailed instructions supplied and you don't have to pay the earth for ink?
Buy an Epson printer... They are by far the best producers of inkjet printers and i have had one that has lasted for in excess of seven years with few problems.
Forget HP - all their products lack support, breakdown in about a year or less and have appalling spec. I repair no end of HP printers, scanners, laptops without being able to access any useful troubleshooting information.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Denny Conway (3/2/04 2:30 PM) | + / - | Nick: OH BOY! TALK ABOUT OPENING A CAN OF WORMS...You will probably be receiving some replies about Epson Printers, from different people who do not agree with you. I do agree with you on the older Ink Jet Style Epson Printers, especially if using only Epson Ink Jet Cartridges and not Non-Epson Ink or Ink Cartridges. Unfortunatly, a lot of people have some good complaints about some of the newer Epson Ink Jet Printers, put out in the last couple of years...Denny Conway

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Len (3/5/04 12:43 PM) | + / - | I recently installed what is supposed to be a new print cartridge in a 3820 at my desk at work. It didn't want to snap in and when it did mine failed and said the cartridge wasn't installed afterwards. I took and reinstalled the old cartridge. Now it doesn't print either or come from the home position when I try to print. I have finally had the time to compare the cartridges. One is labelled "hp c6615d" and one, the one that messed up this printer, is labelled "hp c6615n" The "D" is a 25ml and the "N" is a 14ml cartridge. They are different in design now that I have compared them. The tab on the upper rear left side of the cartridge is angled different. Since my employer purchased these cartridges for this printer I'm not out anything either way but thought I'd mention this in case others have inadvertantly installed a cartridge in their printer/printers that even though are packaged for their printer might actually be flawed. Both cartridges were packaged as 15 in HP packages.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Hugh (3/6/04 6:08 PM) | + / - | How does one get class action status on a "disposable" product? You guys have about as good a chance of winning that as a class action against MacDonalds for making you fat. You made the mistake of buying a cheap piece of crap that happened to resemble a printer. Admit your mistake, toss it in the trash bin, learn from your mistake and get on with your life.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by gb (3/6/04 6:23 PM) | + / - | I don't remember seeing disposable on the box anywhere, but I'll check if you insist it's on there. Why do they sell replacement cartridges on a disposable printer? This is blatant misrepresentation and is cause for an action. We had a guy running for gov here and when asked about advise for rape victims said, "...lay back and enjoy it". If I get screwed (and didn't ask for it), I seek justice.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (3/6/04 7:42 PM) | + / - | The odds are that you have a dead internal power supply. You're right, this isn't a typical problem. Find one with the hung cartridge failure and use it for parts. HP does not sell spare parts for them. Keep in mind, if you fix it one of the common failures may be wainting in the wings. Get a new Deskjet 6122 on eBay and avoid the suspense.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Rudy (3/6/04 9:47 PM) | + / - | For those low on cash, a used Hp 820, 870 or any of the 900 series that uses the large black (51645) cartridge would be a good choice. A good cleaning, including a roller wash, will usually "fix" those 820s and 870s....they may be slower than that 3820 was, but they keep on working. If you want to use up your expensive cartridges, they fit in the 920 series and the 940c. If you find one of these at a thrift shop...don't overpay.

We used to have 640c's, but this year and last they have been dying - i guess 4 years aint bad from an inkjet in a school - but the 3820's (which cost a LOT more than $40 cause i'm in Australia) are crapping out after less than 12 months. Throw me in on the class action. And all the students by proxy. oh yeah - and i use a Canon at home :)

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Rudy (3/10/04 10:02 PM) | + / - | psistorm....if you scrapped those 640s it was a mistake....if you have any left, restore them with a good cleaning and the usage of the HP rubber restore product (see kits) Bert has posted detailed procedures for cleaning 600 series printers many times....a site search will get you to them. Really....it's a good bet that a really good manual cleaning will restore what you have left to like new.... Cannabalize those that do not make the cut for parts like pinch rollers, belts, etc. Consider also the purchase of that HP model 6122 that Bert often mentions...discontinued and half price on ebay, elsewhere.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by shane (3/11/04 7:29 AM) | + / - | Don't be so quick to dump on hp deskjet printers until you have a better idea of what's going on.For the most part the deskjet 900 series and the 3820 are a good machine. The problem with your machine is a jammed serice station which holds your inks on the right side. The reason for the jam is probably old ink gumming up the service station.Free up service station and clean up old ink and your problem should be solved.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave W (3/11/04 7:28 PM) | + / - | Add my 3820 to the trash heap....for slamming the cartridges to the right. Don't you just love how their reference guide only talks about "installation troubleshooting," ignoring this problem as well as the incredible racket as the rollers thresh about trying to pull paper through? They want to get you through the 90 day warranty period, and have you buy a new unit in a year or two. So how do I rescue the cartridges once they're jammed over to the right - take a sledge hammer to this p.o.c.?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Terry (3/11/04 8:42 PM) | + / - | I'll never buy another HP product again. Two years ago I purchased an 1100 laser, it shorted and caught fire, it almost burned down the garage. HP sent me another, it quit working, they never reimbursed me for the damages. I purchased a 610, it failed. I returned it to HP, they sent me a 3820. The 3820 has now failed. No warranty. :( *Good News! Last week while at the auto junk yard looking for car parts, I found an Epson Stylus 640 and a Stylus 800 all dirty and greasy in the back of a wrecked truck. I paid $5 for both. I cleaned them up and bought cartridges, they work just fine. I can see the quality difference just by opening them up and cleaning them. I'm sold on Epson from now on. HP is basically cheap junk. :)

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by mart1nn (3/13/04 6:32 AM) | + / - | As mentioned previously, the majority of faults with this printer are caused by failure of the small cog that connects the cleaning station to the paper feed. | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by gb (3/14/04 1:42 PM) | + / - | I think I'll tear mine apart and send the bad cog to England and get it re-fabbed. Too bad HP can't just supply a stronger one. How much is 11 pounds in U.S. dollars? Anyone else gonna try this approach?

 | Recommendations? by Richard Scott (3/14/04 5:57 PM) | + / - | I finally reached the cog wheel - yep broken. Guess HP has to pay for the Compaq takeover somehow. So what inexpensive (not cheap) printer are we all going to buy to replace it?
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by gb (3/14/04 9:09 PM) | + / - | I'm gonna try the $11.96 cog. I figure that plus the postage to ship that cog to Merry ole' England and I've got a new inexpensive printer. Already got cartridges.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by hugh (3/14/04 9:58 PM) | + / - | If he needs the broken cog, then he's just repairing it. I suspect he's using the old super glue and baking soda trick. If you put some super glue on a clean cog and then sprinkle baking soda on, it forms an instant plastic that you can file and shape. You can repeat the process and gradually form the missing part this way. You can actually replace broken gear teeth with this method. Not much else you can do other than make a mold and cast your own gear.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by gb (3/14/04 10:06 PM) | + / - | Will that be stronger than the original? Would you do it for $12? If it is, and if you would, where do I send my cog & $12? I'll buy the super glue and baking soda too ;-)
|
 | Hope for HP Deskjet 3820 by David C (3/14/04 11:30 PM) | + / - | First. Yes HP made a mistake in the very price competitive market. And yes their support for the 3820 printer is not good. There is hope. 1. If you remove the common problem, the failed cog in your printer and send it to Gary in the UK he will repair it for you. see http://www.fixmybrokenprinter.co.uk/ I suspect that this rework is not a super glue and soda job as suggested. Hopefully it is a metal key that fits between the shaft and the cog. A slot needs to be machined in the cog. 2. Yes the bearings that support the print heads on the solid round bar are minimal compared with earlier longer life printers. However you can certainly prolong life by applying a light coating of thin oil to the bar and check it once in a while to keep it lubricated. I was a senior manager within HP for 17 years when the products were considered the best. I find it sad that a price war has caused corners to be cut too much. My feeling is that HP has damaged their reputation and instead of trying to buy off customers with cash rebates on printers they should make a little effort to make a stronger replacement cog available (ie make a positive ethical decision and restore confidence) . It does seem that these printers are still produced in Singapore therefore the moulding dies should be available.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Gary (3/15/04 12:23 AM) | + / - | I can confirm that my method of re-manufacturing the cog does NOT involve any baking soda or superglue. Like David says the cog has to be machined and metal parts added. None of my repaired cogs have failed and I have been using this method for over 6 months now. www.fixmybrokenprinter.co.uk

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (3/15/04 1:30 AM) | + / - | David I'm not convinced that the printer price war is the only culprit in this problem. I suspect that the people doing these designs know more cost cutting and being 'innovative' than they do about producing reliable designs. See my experience below. I opened up a PSC 2210 recently because of a carriage jam error. The problem was caused by the service station failing to release the carriage, sound familiar. The service station in this case had its own drive motor. I didn't explore why the service station was acting up because I noticed that the drive belt was broken loose from the carriage. HP understood in the past how to solidly attach the belt to the carriage. The people who knew must have retired. Fortunately HP offers spare parts for the 2210 but not the fancy kludge that connects the belt. I tend to believe that they cannot continue to produce shoddy designs long term. Corporations eventually listen when the cry gets loud enough.

|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (3/18/04 11:23 PM) | + / - | Ken Many Deskjets can use the 15 and 78 cartridge set, all superior to the DJ 3820. The 15 can be used in most printers that use the 45. The 15 is just a lower capacity version of the 45. Printers that shipped with the 45 can use the 15 but not vise versa. Go to this web page for a list. h20015.www2.hp.com I wouldn't be afraid of any of any of the DJ 900 series. Just avoid the ones that use the lower capacity 15. Unfortunately, most if not all are out of production but they are readily available on eBay. I happen to like the DJ 6122. Also take note, generally speaking ink cartridge capacity has been downgraded on the newest models.

You might want to do an actual search on this Printer Repair Site, so you can read about other peoples problems and what they have tried to do to correct the problems, but most of time they were not successful. You might be interested in these previous replies: by JON, dated 9/28/2003 @ 11:01:37 Re: HP 3820 Cradle Slams Left. I saw these printers at Office Depot for $39.95. Simplest thing to do would be to toss it, and buy a new one. All sub $100 printers are disposable...Sorry, but almost every 3820 that has these wierd type problems, is not worth repairing, because they are so inexpensive to start with...Denny Conway...P.S. | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by jon (3/23/04 7:26 PM) | + / - | Terry, hate to burst your bubble. You didn't save the planet. I recently saw a documentary on what happens to those cartridges. They wind up at a port city in China. What is probably the most polluted city in the world because all they do is strip and burn electronic waste and cartridges. Their walls are old computer cases stacked together. There was a black dog in the video laying on his back. We didn't know if he was alive or dead, but we think his name used to be "Whitey" or whatever that is in Chinese. A good percentage of the children have lung problems. They have to import drinking water because all their wells are polluted. The HP campaign used to be called "Remove the empty cartridges from the hands of the recyclers who are saving the earth and costing us profit". As you can see it was too long so they shortened it.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Robert (3/25/04 7:31 PM) | + / - | Just throwing in my two cents. We bought 5 of these for our office for those spoiled brats who refused to get up off of their lazy butts to fetch paper out of the dozen, or so, network lasers we maintain. [Admittedly, I am one of them but finessed my way into a personal laser printer. Perks of being in IS?] In less than 10 months 4 of these have crapped out with the same cartridge-jamming, paper-shredding, "diagnostics makes no sense" messages, problems. All I can say is "you get what you pay for"! The machine had a 90-day warranty. Hey, wake up. The manufacturer is saying that they don't expect it to last 91 days. Good technology is not cheap, but we figure we should get it that way. Stick a nice English ivy in the printer and set it on the window sill. Better than polluting the land fill. Get yourself a decent laser. Better lifetime, longer cartridge life, cheaper cost per page. Ok, enough said.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Celeste (3/26/04 8:19 AM) | + / - | for anyone with the "black cartridge not compatible" error: having this problem and not getting anywhere in fixing it, i disconnected my 3820 and borrowed a 5550 from my dad - uninstalled and reinstalled software, wouldn't ya know - SAME F***ING PROBLEM!!!!!! can anybody help me? i am thinking this is some sort of driver issue - Bert or Denny, any comments on this?
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Denny Conway (3/26/04 9:43 AM) | + / - | Celeste: As the 5550 uses a different set of Printer Drivers altogether, Its hard to imagine that corrupt drivers would cause the same problem on two different models of printers, but anything is possible. I'm assuming that your dads printer was working normally on his Computer System, with no problems. What I would suggest is actually installing your 3820 onto your dads computer system. Install the printer drivers, connect your printer using your dads Printer Cable and then simply turn on and test your printer. If your printer works ok on your dads computer, then I would guess that its a possible problem in your computer system. Its possible that your printer cable could be bad or failing, but normally that does not cause the type of error message/problem, that you are reporting [usually causes more of a communication type error or failure]. You could of course also take your printer cable and try it after first trying your dads cable, just to see if there is any difference. If your printer has the same problem, when installed on your dads computer, then you know its the printer itself. Of course it could also be your printer cable if the problem only happens after trying your cable, but works ok using your dads cable...Considering the high rate of failures reported on the 3820 and the many different types of reported problems, I would guess that its more of a actual Hardware/Parts Failure in the printer itself...Denny Conway
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Gary (3/26/04 10:41 AM) | + / - | Celeste: In addition to Denny's very good advice you could try the following. Disconnect the 3820 printer completely from the computer. Make sure there is some paper in the tray. Switch the printer on and wait until it has finished initialising. Then hold the paper feed button for a few seconds. The printer should now print a nice colour test page. If it does this then your printer is most likely OK and the problem is more likely to be with the computer, driver or cable. I'm not sure of the key combination to get a test print on the 5550 but you should be able to do a similar thing. Also, with the 3820, if you lift the lid (when the power is on) where does the head move to? This gives you a lot of information on cartridge type problems.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Celeste (3/26/04 12:33 PM) | + / - | Denny & Gary: i have done test pages and that works. but, i just trashed all HP items and did an uninstall (actually, an uninstall doesn't guarantee that all items are gone, as i found items still on the harddrive) - went back to the HP site and read some instructions for some problems on Mac OS X, but none mentioning problems for OS 9 - now, i can print from OS X but still cannot print from OS 9 - i know it has something to with the driver for OS 9 but i have installed the current driver from the HP site. still can figure out what i need to do next.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Gary (3/26/04 12:56 PM) | + / - | Celeste: The fault could be due to an extension conflict in OS9. Try going into the extension manager control panel and restart your Mac with just the system extensions and any extension relating to printing (including USB support). If this works you will then have to go back to the extension manager and gradually switch them all back on until you can isolate which one is conflicting.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Denny Conway (3/26/04 12:59 PM) | + / - | Celeste: I'm sorry, but I know nothing about Mac's or driver problems on Mac's. The only thing I can even suggest is to contact HP Technical Support for possible help or advice. If your printer is out of warranty, then you'll be charged for the help if you call HP directly. | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bill (3/30/04 9:22 AM) | + / - | Mine is a different problem. So far my 3820 has worked well (but after reading about all these problems, now I don't feel so secure). It was a freebie that came with a new system for someone else in the comapny, and was bequeathed to me. The problem I have is that sometimes when I try to print something, the printer and the computer just pretty much sit there. The printer folder (Wme) shows a queued print job, but no action. I have to shut down my computer and do it over again. This is on my work system. Interestingly, I have the very same problem on my home system using the HP PSC2210. Obviously there is a driver problem. A while back I downloaded what HP said was an updated driver for my PSC2210, and when I installed it all hell broke loose in my system. To make a long story short, eventually I had to completely reformat my hard drive and reinstall all my software to escape the damage done by the new driver. It was like a virus. So for that reason, I am a little skittish about installing updated drivers. Anyone have any advice for me for both these printers?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Tim (3/30/04 9:58 AM) | + / - | I've had my 3820 for quite a while and with no problems. I had to create my own. The paper jammed up halfway a little while ago so I pulled it out from the front. Now the printer times out and won't feed paper. My computer says that there is no response from the printer. At first when the paper was jamming the ink cartridge monitor suddenly changed to "full" and it would try to print. Now the monitor (The window with the graphical ink cartriges) doesn't even show the cartriges. It kills me that I didn't realize that there was an access panel in the back. I thought at first that I must have broken a paper detection or limit switch. I don't even see any evidence of any sort of a sensor.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (3/30/04 9:21 PM) | + / - | Well, well, a bunch of HP haters huh? I have had the same HPs now for years and have had no problems what so ever... Then I woke up from my dream and found the 3820 to be doing the two light blink at me! Now dont Pannic and grab that #10 torx and the std. screw driver. Follow the link to Garys site and take that bad boy apart. Take out the gear and send it to him. Now, lets not forget to look at the gear that sits on the top of that pesky little broken one. Mine is cracked also and it will need repair as well. I did not send mine to Gary but cast new ones from brass using a lost investment process. The printer works just fine and I suspect it will for some time to come. BTW, I have a 950c, 970cxi, two 720s an Epson 890 (gosh I love that thing) with a continuous inking system from MIS Associates Inc. and a BJ-C30 for my lap top. Smashing site!

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Davmax (3/30/04 10:47 PM) | + / - | Dave, You had some gears cast in brass for the HP 3820. This sounds expensive but a solid solution. Are you able to capitalise on this. many others would like to get hold of brass gears. I know of a number of local machines. It would be a great help if you could advise how to achieve or buy brass castings.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Steve (3/31/04 5:56 AM) | + / - | dave, i too would like to know how to cast that gear out of brass. i took my printer apart and the little gear looks just fine. my problem .. like you ... was a crak in the arm of the top gear. or do you know where i could get a compatable gear size? thanks, steve
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (3/31/04 6:40 AM) | + / - | Davmax & Steve, I would love to give you the method on this fix but I am also in favor of the entrepreneur like Gary that provides a service for fixed gears for less than $15.00 US! If this doesn’t work for you, here’s the method: 1). Remove the defective parts and cyanoacrylate them back together (super glue). 2). Form a sprue to the least disrupt able spot, i.e. the flat on the back of the gears. 3). Mix a batch of casting plaster, place the gear and sprue in a small paper cup, leaving equal space on all sides from the wall of the cup, pour the casting plaster slowly into the cup and fill it to the rim or to the near top of the sprue. 4). (Tricky part) Put the cup in a vacuum chamber to pull the air pockets out. 5). Allow the casting to cure for three days at no less than 70 degrees F. 6). remove the paper and place the casting mold upside down into a furnace heated to no less than 600 degrees F. for 1 hour. 7). While the mold is heating, heat your crucible and add the brass needed to over fill the mold by 20%. When the brass melts, skim the surface for impurities. 8). The mold should be ready to cast but you need to shake it to get any residue out before casting. Once free of debris, place the mold on a suitable mat, re-skim the crucible and pour the brass into the mold. TIPS: -The hot mold will cause the brass to frost; this is OK for this application. -The sprue will need to be cut off and filed smooth. -The gear will have to be filed and buffed free of burrs. -If there was any nylon not burned out, you will have a void and your gear will be junk! Still want to cast your own?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by steve (3/31/04 12:21 PM) | + / - | thanks for the info dave by the way .. if anyone was wondering about the super glue and powder quick fix brought up earlier on the tree... well it seemed to work during the power up and tests ... then it broke when i tried to print the first page. that glue just wasn't strong enough. given the weakness of the plastic to begin with im surprised mine lasted as long as it did. looks like im going to get a new printer... but dave im still going to make a gear out of brass just to see how things work. thanks again

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (3/31/04 2:39 PM) | + / - | Steve, I am going to look at a junk store this weekend and see what gears they have. I am sure that 20 tooth, 1/2" gear shouldnt be hard to find. I will mock up some with the added sleave and a pin. TTFN
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by davmax (3/31/04 5:12 PM) | + / - | many thanks dave. I already have silicone moulds of the gears. The small gear profile has been changed to make the peg more robust. These moulds were used to cast and then test different cold cure plastics. All materials were destroyed by the printer. Not strong enough. So I might use your method but first cast the gears in wax and then use the lost wax method, similar to your lost plastic.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (4/1/04 7:32 AM) | + / - | The brass seems to have more lubricity then the copper or bronze. I would think that the lost wax will be FAR superior to the lost "plastic" process I used as I had significant voids where the unburned nylon stayed in the mold. I should have upped the temp to 750 F but I have had molds crack at higher temps.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Gary (4/1/04 12:26 PM) | + / - | Hi all good luck with your brass gear investigations. re. finding gears at junk stores - I think the gears themselves would be quite easy to locate if it wasn't for the additional pegs. I stripped a few old toner carts and fusers today and found several "near misses" with regard to size and teeth pitch. I don't think I have ever seen anything with a peg though. I continue to have real faith in my repair process. The weak part of the gear is the peg and hence only the peg needs replacing. I have never had a printer or gear come back so I am very confident that the repair is "tried and tested".

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by warrenw (4/2/04 7:23 AM) | + / - | I have 2 DeskJet 3820 that the error light flash and no matter what I try, it will not correct the problem. HP is the worst service I have ever seen in my life. Their replacement parts are retarded to replace and their service is number#1 for the WORST. I deal with thousand of printers and now I am making sure our company buy LEXMARK, they give a reasonable price on parts and their service beats HP HANDS DOWN. My advice to everyone is to not purchase any HP Printer and you'll improve your printing problem by 90%.Lexmark reply back to you and treat you like a person and will help you solve your problem where HP don't even care. But enough is enough, I have solved my problems by not purchasing another HP product again.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by emie (4/2/04 2:21 PM) | + / - | I have solved my HP 3820 problem I bought a Canon MP730, yes it's alot more $$ but it does everything print scan copy and fax. I love it! The HP3820 is sitting in a box where it belongs!

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (4/2/04 6:13 PM) | +1 + / - | I cant believe that a group of rational human beings would trash a whole company because YOU, I repeat, YOU asked for lower priced printers. Well, you got them and some of the problems that go with them. And Warrenw, please dont give us the " I deal with thousand of printers" crap, because if you were, HP would have a Tech in you office in a day so as to not loose your contract! Now, Lexmark has made its share of garbage along with Canon and we dont trash them here on this post. Warrenw, you have a broken gear and it wont fix its self, so pull the thing apart and send the gear to Gary in the UK and have him fix it for you. ...Bad news, the brass gear I made worked just fine, but the torque on the post holding the two gears has snapped due to the additional stresses. Still love my HPs, all but the 3820!

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by davmax (4/3/04 1:55 AM) | + / - | To Dave, I was interested to read that your brass peg failed. Did you cast a stronger peg structure or the original? I hope to find someone to cast for me. I have already created a stronger peg structure in the mould for my cold plastic tests. One problem that contributes to failure is that as stress bends the peg on the larger cog the point of contact with the other peg extends toward the outer end of that peg. This multiplies the stress on the peg. The cast pegs should be vertical to each cog face to move the point of contact evenly along each peg enabling more stress take up on the hub of each cog. Hope I am not boring you with this. But it does seem that considerable care is required in this stressful design.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ashu (4/3/04 3:33 PM) | + / - | Hey sarfraz, i see that ur printer lights are blinking anf the printer is not blinking. it can happen if the paper jam has actually caused the printer its functionality. to find out this u can try taking the cartridges completely out of the printer and then try printing. is the lights continue to blink then buddy send the printer back to HP if it is in warranty. and if it is in warranty then ask for an exchange with the Deskjet 5550 printer, coz it is more reliable and i think it comes with the 3 months of a refurbised warranty. and Dave this one is for u all the Deskjet 3000 series are actually pos and they are not worth the pain u guys are actually taking to repair them, what i would suggest to all the people who have these printers is try to replace it with Deskjet 5550 printer, as it is a real good printer.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (4/3/04 5:42 PM) | + / - | Davmax, The pegs are intact, the post that is extruded from the waste ink tub broke! There must be some other problems with over torque because I cant believe that that little motor could break this post without stripping some other gears. TTFN

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Duane (4/5/04 10:21 AM) | + / - | Same problems here with HP Deskjet 3820. I had it about 9 months and the carriage went to the right and just stayed. Also, does not center when cover is listed. Tried all the fixes, same results. Followed some fixes on HP website, no success. Called HP support, told them I had followed all directions on HP website. They told me, of course, out of warranty. Wanted me to talk to tech support for $30 and said would fix problem, I told them no way. For a $60 printer, who in their right mind is going to pay 50% of cost of ptr. to talk to someone for a possible fix and/or then pay for parts and/or service. The guy I got at HP just did not seem to understand why I wanted no help. I thanked him for his time and then threw out the 3820. It's a shame and a waste of resources. I kind of liked the printer when it worked, but I was amazed at its short life. Yep, it's best to buy a quality ptr. Also, I noticed when I filled the cartridge myself, I got a lot longer life than with new HP cartridges. It seemed they were only partially filled by HP and sold as new. I actually have an Apollo P-2200 I put on my sys and it seems a lot better built than the 3820, although cost was about same. Some have told me the Apollo P-2200 was based on the HP 600. Too bad Apollo corp. is no longer around for low end ptrs.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ashu (4/5/04 6:50 PM) | + / - | yeah exactly apollo p 2200 is actually designed on Deskjet 600 series and u know what p 2500 is Deskjet 656c printer. so if u want a real good deal for ur money then search for a deskjet 600 series printer. these printers might not have those amazing features of borderless printing but if u r planning to print large amount of data then either go for a second hand deskjet 600 series printer (presently it is out of production)or go for Deskjet 5550 printer, it has 1 year warranty and it is quite strong as compared to the 3000 series printer. i hope this will help u to select a better hp printer.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Duane (4/6/04 7:56 AM) | + / - | ashu, thanks for your information! Good advice! I agree 100%, some of the older technologies while not always loaded with whiz-bang features, are more reliable, a better investment, and are quality products.

 | No Subject by kimber (4/9/04 2:52 PM) | + / - | Can someone help me solve the "printer carriage jam".. on my HP V 40? What can I do? Thank you all..
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (4/9/04 3:36 PM) | + / - | Kimber, The V-40 is basicly a 900 series in an all in one package. I suggest that you look through the threads for the 900 series printers and see what possible fixes are. This thread is an exhausted run-on about the 3820 POC.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (4/9/04 3:45 PM) | + / - | I leave the thread up for people to vent. The actual model is 3820 POS.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ashu (4/9/04 4:29 PM) | + / - | Hi Kimber, i searched for any docs relating to releasing the carriage stall, but thx to the support system of HP i could not find one. but i have find one document for cleaning the carriage contacts, i think this may help u as it involves relasing of the cartridges from their home position. the link is given below, its a manual link. http://h20015.www2.hp.com/content/common/manuals/bpu80011/bpu80011.pdf and in case this does not help then contact support of hp and they will provide you with some assistance, as they have pre formulated answers which are specifically meant for these issues. i hope this may helpful to u

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Libertyman (4/9/04 4:37 PM) | + / - | I see I have just joined an elite group! I came here looking for help, but find that I am one in a LONG line of disappointed 3820 users. MY story: I was in the middle of printing some flyers for work on my 3820 here and the printer carriage stuck on the right side (as I have read repeatedly), so I fetched my 3820 from the house, printed exactly 3 sheets and IT too suffered the same fate! This is way too much coincidence to happen to both 3820s I use!. Perhaps there is also a software glitch enhancing this problem??
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by davmax (4/9/04 6:03 PM) | + / - | Dave has made his contribution with a method of casting brass gears to solve the mechanical breakage problem. He then suffered a breakage of the plastic shaft that supports the small output gear. Basically the brass solution is even more complex than what Dave outlined. Account has to be taken of the brass casting shrinkage. There is already a 13 thou bearing clearance on the large bearing of the larger gear. This worsens with casting and it is likely that this loose bearing contributed to Daves problem. The only way to create effective gears is to make a silicone moulding around the original gears. Then wax clones are cast ready for the lost wax casting of brass.(you keep the originals as a reference) The important bit is that dummy shafts have to be used in the process to ensure the correct bearing clearances (allowing for shrinkage). Graphite and oil will be used to lubricate the bearings. This is the process that I am completing with the help of friends. A matter that I am pursuing because of considerable investment in printers , cartridges and refilling.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by davmax (4/9/04 6:15 PM) | + / - | Libertyman. You may be right about a software glitch. So far I have not been able to prove this by substitution. The main issue is understanding how this machanism works. Basically the peg on the gear fails as the motor drives the printhead seals on to the printheads. This is where the motor is forced to stop by this limit. The stress of this process overtime causes the peg failure. The electronics uses the contact with the heads as a reference position. Once the peg is broken the cartridges can not be unlocked and the electronic goes a little nuts because the reference is lost.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ashu (4/9/04 8:57 PM) | + / - | hey Libertyman, i know these printers are pathetic in terms hardware, however if you have any software issue then let us know, probably one of us may have answer for it.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (4/10/04 1:22 PM) | + / - | Davmax, Thanks for spelling out what caused the broken post. I never thought of the shrinkage on the gears from casting! BTW, I made a mistake, the V-40 has the same lift mechanisim as the PO'C' (dont like swearing). Dave

|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (4/11/04 2:51 PM) | + / - | I was wondering. They're selling the 3520s for $39 locally. If they have the same gear (which I suspect they do, you can remove it. You then have some other spare parts and a new ink cartridge to boot. For the life of me I can't understand why people would go to so much trouble to keep such a cheap printer going.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by davmax (4/11/04 9:32 PM) | + / - | To Moe You are tending to think it worthwhile investing $39.00 to enable you to use the spares from a failed printer. This is probably economic for you. Likewise for those who have a considerable investment in 3820 printers it is economic to find a sold fix and get more life and value out of the printers and their cartridges. The printer is good when working. Good luck with you decision.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Craig (4/12/04 7:43 AM) | + / - | One more name to the list - my 3820 did the same thing - carriage is locked in position on the right, and won't move, even when I unplugged the power cord from the back, as HP suggested. Dave - thanks for your rational commentary when others start dumping on HP as a whole because of one particular printer. I'm in agreeance - I've been a fan of HP's printers for quite some time, and all of the companies I've worked at have used HP for some or all of their printers. 99% of the time they work great, and their support site is relatively useful. Lesson learned, though I'm dissappointed that my in-laws paid ~$110 for this as a gift last May (2003) for my wife. Have been considering getting an all-in-one (copier/printer/scanner) device anyway, so no time like the present, huh? Thanks for leaving this thread up as a forum to vent!

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (4/12/04 8:22 AM) | + / - | HEY MOE! (Little three stooges joke) The reason that I spend an exhoerbant amount of time on a stupid printer that I didn’t even buy and have NO money invested in is because... I can’t stand to put gizmos in the trash when there are parts in there that I can use! Gotta fix that sucker! It’s the same reason I have three laptops that just barely work, it helps keep me and my mind sharp. My boys do the same, much to their mothers chagrin! TTFN Dave

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (4/12/04 1:13 PM) | + / - | Dave A necessity for repairing Deskjets is a (tidy) pile of scrap printers. The only certain useful part in the 3820 is the paper pusher. The 3820 doesn't last long enough for the average person to break it. Remove the paper pusher and use it the repair the reasonably good DJ 900 series or its relatives.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (4/12/04 1:20 PM) | + / - | Bert, Bert, Bert, The gizmos in the printers are perfect for little robots and the motors work great for RC cars. The rubber wheels act as tank tread mounts and the electric eye in the HPs can be used for security and/or proximity detectors. Like I said, too many cool parts to throw away! Dave

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Morris (4/12/04 8:13 PM) | + / - | Dave, Davemax, and Gary, Your comments and advise have been entertaining and enlightening. A freind of mine asked me to look at his 3820, with the same symptoms. Not sure of what he wants to do. Maybe I will give Gary a try. It sounds very similar to the way software makers dump products into the market and leave it to the consumers to call in about all the bugs. Sounds like an Edsel.

|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave (4/14/04 6:03 AM) | + / - | Jenny... or as you posted before "Don’t disregard me because I'm not a guy dweeb!" LOL 1. Without opening the cover, look into the printer and see if the cartridges are all the way over to the right. 2. Send a job to the printer and see if the carts move across the printing path. 3. If they don’t, does the little rubber belt that is behind the carts move back and forth? 4. Do you hear any clicking sounds when trying to print? Typically the breakage we see in this printer are plastic parts buried deeply in the bowels of this POC but it will typically feed 1 sheet of unprinted paper if coaxed to do so by pushing the paper feed button (the middle one). | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ashu (4/15/04 2:38 PM) | + / - | hi jeeny, as i actually understand your printer is not picking the paper at all, but it seems that printer seems to be working fine. ok i will give u the steps to a stand alone self test and then try printing. if it works then there is absolutely no issues and it will continue to work. however in case this test fails then printer needs to be serviced. steps to self test: 1. Power off the printer. 2. Unplug the printer cable from the back of the printer. This is the cable that connects the computer to the printer. 3. Power on the printer. 4. Press and hold the Power button through step six. 5. Press the Cancel button eight times. 6. Press the Resume button four times. 7. Release the Power button. 8. Connect the printer cable to the printer, after the diagnostic page prints. Examine the printout it will print a report containing the printer model and serial number followed by four grids. Moving left to right, the grids are black, magenta, cyan, and yellow. if it prints fine then no props otherwise u r welcome to the elite group of disabled hp printers.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Joe (4/15/04 5:23 PM) | + / - | Hello everybody. To be blunt, my printer just went through every little thing mentioned on this page. What is really irritating is that nobody ever tells you that the printer is going to do this. They say, "Oh this is such a great deal! It doesn't cost much, etc." and all of a sudden, it just drops on you. They say that this model isn't sold in stores anymore, but I think that they just put the same internal components in another body and gave it a new name. Anybody think so besides me? I'm going to check in on it and post back if I find out. Good day, everyone.

They have been replaced with a totally new technology in the new 5### series and 7### photosmarts. I had great enthusiasm for the 3820 printer...even sold one to my brother.in.law. They were sold by the thousands. However I have started to hear some problems. I'm not sure if this is due to the large volume sold and thus the law of averages. LEE

Of course getting answers from HP is not easy. What abour current printers on market do you suggest acertain model of HP or do you suggest another particular brand more highly? Larry

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by LEE (4/16/04 4:48 PM) | + / - | Before we start to talk about a new printer, let's try another solution by cleaning the contacts of the print cartridge. These are the instructions recommended by HP service. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cleaning the print cartridge contacts 1. Raise the top cover of the HP Deskjet 610 series printer. The ink cartridge carriage should move to the center position. 2. Remove the ink cartridges. Examine the copper flex circuitry on the back of each cartridge. Ensure that the flex circuitry is fully intact and not damaged. 3. Unplug the power to the HP Deskjet 600 series printer. 4. Use the instructions listed below to complete the steps for the print cartridge cleaning. Use a clean, foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water. Locate the copper-colored circuitry strip on the back of the cartridge. Clean the copper-colored strip with the dampened swab or cloth. Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the nozzle plate. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAUTION: A dry cloth may scratch and damage the ink cartridge contacts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Clean the carriage contacts on the back wall of the ink cartridge carriage with a damp, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth. Then use a dry, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth to remove the moisture from the contacts. If the carriage contacts show noticeable damage, contact HP Customer Care using the number that is listed in the printer's User's Guide. Plug in the power and turn on the printer. Place the ink cartridges into the carriage and snap or lock into position. With the HP Deskjet 610C series printers, a click will sound when the ink cartridge snaps snugly in the carriage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Let us know how this works. If that doesn't help, you are probably in store for a new printer. If you want more info on that let us know how much printing you do and what types of printing (photos? two sided? etc?) LEE

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Celeste (4/17/04 7:54 AM) | + / - | Larry and Lee: unfortunately, HP leads you to believe that the ink cartridges are bad. don't be misled in buying new ones. i had the same problem with my 3820 - so i switched printers and SAME THING WITH A 5550. but now here's my problem, i CAN print with the 5550, but only in Mac OS X (don't know if you guys are mac users, but i have seen this happen to windows users as well). cannot print anything from the OS 9 Classic applications. this is due to a software-driver issue. HP cannot help in resolving. i have tried for months with them with no resolve. it's quite dissappointing Celeste...

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anne (4/17/04 8:21 PM) | + / - | Our 3820 has suddenly ended it's usefulness. Okay,so now I am wondering what printer should be a good one to buy next? Through HP Tech support I was told the "HP5650" would have better longevity because the "ink heads" are incorporated into the cartridges and are there for easily and periodically changed making the printer last longer. From the above posts it would appear that the "ink heads" did not seem to be the most common problem in the 3820. So are any of the parts made better, or, is the 5650 going to have just about the same amount of likelihood of problems as the 3820? It has me wondering?
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by davmax (4/18/04 12:42 AM) | + / - | Hi Anne, The HP advice makes no sense because all HP Deskjet printers have the print head embedded in the cartridge. This used to be an argument against Epsom printers that commonly do not and also Canon printers of late. The main point is that you should not buy a cheap printer if you want it to last. I had a client who bought a 3820 it lasted over a year, beyond waranty support. So I suggested a Canon printer at the same price level. Apparently the Canon has problems already (after 3 months)!!!!. So buy a solid mid to higher cost printer. The Brand is your choice. Wishing you a successful choice.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Lee (4/18/04 5:30 AM) | + / - | Daymax... Of course, the print heads are built into the 3820 as well...and this reflects the sad state of support for many companies. Demand for support escalates so fast that many staffers are just unfamiliar with the issues and products...as reflected in the response Anne received. I do agree with you re: printers. HP makes great printers, but I've always said that they should stay out of the bottom feeder market and leave that to Lexmark and Canon. I had a customer buy a 5150 and was using it to print close to 1,000 pages a week. Needless to say, it didn't last long. LEE

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Mark (4/19/04 12:16 AM) | +2 + / - | My 3820 worked fine for over a year. Now, when I switch it on, all three lights start flashing alternately, the cartridges move to the far left, it spits out 1 blank sheet of paper and the cartridges return to the right. Then the power and the error lights keep flashing simultaneously and it won't print. When I tell it to print, I get an error message, something like: "the cartridge can't move (well, it just did..); check if there is a paper or other blockage". Is this the end of the printer or can it be fixed?? Mark

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by jes_atiu (4/20/04 4:02 PM) | + / - | hum, let me describe what my dj3820 suddenly started doing: cartridges are over on the right side, not all the way, and they move back and forth on their own a little bit. lights all flash on the front of the machine and it picks up one peice of paper and runs it thru the machine and kicks it out and then the out of paper light blinks. push the out of paper light again and repeat the process...over and over all night if you want to. any help???

They don't make spares for disposable printers.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by boyd (4/22/04 10:49 AM) | + / - | My 3820 has me hypnotised with the power and resume lights flashing. When asked to print, nothing. Error message finally shows up which only confuses me more. I shut off printer, turn on again and it sounds like alot of other peoples problems begin. Cartridge tries to move to left but seems stuck. Then seems to come unglued and slams to the left. Rollers are spinning at half speed and it picks up and delivers one sheet of paper.(very slowly) Cart then returns to the right but drags across plastic tabs on it's return mission. Wheels spin a bit more and all is peaceful again except for the lights blinking again. Is it's life over? I don't have a problem trashing it except I just bought 2ea. color and black cart's. Will they fit anything else thats decent? I guess you better add me to the list of "happy" 3820 owners. Boyd

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by jes_atiu (4/22/04 8:12 PM) | + / - | Boyd, consider the link two messages up, posted by Gary. I have my 3820 in pieces on the desk, and it's not that hard to take apart, especially with his directions. I haven't gotten all the way in to the gear yet, but hopefully will soon and may find it at fault, in which case sending him 20.00 thru paypal might be my course of action. ~jesse

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Larry (4/23/04 4:46 AM) | + / - | Well I have tried the cleaning process suggested but it has not improved the situation. Actually when it does decide the black cartridge is in there correctly and prints the print quality has really gone down hill. I was trying to figure out how to run it through a cleaning cycle or three but haven't been able to figure it out seems like the program doesn't show a cleaning process. Does it not have a cleaning cycle for the heads? Up to this time I have enjoyed my 3820 and actually done quite a bit of printing. I do have an 880C that was hooked to another computer but is not being used now so I think I'm going to switch out printers. I would appreciate a suggestion on a new printer I print probably a 100 per month some black some quality color. Larry

|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Rob (1/19/05 1:13 PM) | + / - | Hello It does not show a cleaning cycle, because you have not installed it correctly. The 3820 assistant with all the bells and whistles comes with the drivers from HP. Go to this link and download them.Make sure before you open the file you have the printer disconnected from the computer and deleted the drivers you are presently using. The install will tell you when to hook it back up. Go the route that says show me how to hook up my printer. Rob

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Bert (1/19/05 1:28 PM) | + / - | Turn off the power. The carriage should be parked to the right. If it can be moved by hand, the service station is not working and cannot be repaired. Otherwise, make sure you have good cartridges. If you have verified they are good in another printer, uninstall and reload the driver. Download the latest version here. http://h10025.www1.hp.com
Any failure of the printer hardware makes it scrap.

NEVER THOUGHT THIS WAS THE REASON THE POWER LIGHT WOULD NOT COME ON. IN ADDITION THE CARTRIDGES ARE STUCK ON THE RIGHT. SINCE IT IS A MAJORITY RULING THE PRINTER STINKS. I GUESS I'LL JUST TAMPER WITH IT TO SEE IF IT DOES ANYTHING. IF NOT, I'LL BUY A NEW PRINTER. THIS IS HORRIBLE AT TAX TIME, FOR THE PRINTER TO GO ON THE LAMB.. Additionally, the replacement cartridge has the SAME numbers on it as the one that I took out of the printer which had run out of black ink? (15 HP Inkjet Print Cartridge hp c 6615d) I have cleaned the contacts, but still receive a message that says I put the wrong cartridge in? I even tried another cartridge, but still get the same message? Anyone experience similar problems, and if so how did you correct it so that you could print again? Anyone have any suggestions - besides throwing it away and buying another one. Thanks in advance - Stay Safe - Harry

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Zhile (3/1/05 2:35 PM) | + / - | Hi, this has realy made my day. I am in the buisines of ink and toner refills. I had three different HP DJ 3820 printers stop after I did refills on the black cartridge, which I test on the HP DJ 845c. On the 845 they work fine, but on the 3820 it's all of the above. And I had one in for jammed cradle on the right. That one had it's initial cartridges. I suspect that a paper jam and then actions taken had jammed it. But somehow suspected that the 3820 like the 3320 reads the serial no. of the cartridge and then rejects and/or goes on the blink. I clean the printers for my customers free of charge when they recycle at my place, and have noted over the years that thin residue of stray ink and paper and dust from the air cause blockage of the moving parts. Like the brass gear shrinkage there is very little tolerance on the mechanisam in most machines, even the older ones, but for use of stronger materials they dont stop. Peventive cleaning of all moving parts, with 99% alcohol and then thin lubrication, regularly, even if it just sits on the shelf will keep the new ones runing quietly. Corrosion from the humidity in the air, dust and pollen gather and the mechanics for want of quality plastics break. Its just a matter of time/usage. But these two are just blinking at me. Now I feel "vented". PS. On my way to returning one of the broken ones I had it swiped from my car, now how do I explain that I didn't sell it for some "good money" to the owner?

 | I Fixed my HP Deskjet 3820 by Dave B (3/13/05 9:29 PM) | + / - | After reading the 200+ messages on the HP Deskjet 3820 I figured I had nothing to lose but time in trying to fix my printer. I experienced the same problems (as most everyone else) with the ink cartridges/cradle stuck to the right and the two bottom lights flashing. After taking the printer apart, I confirmed that the post on the smaller of the two final gears (that moves the cleaning station back and forth) had indeed been sheared off. For those who haven't taken their printers apart, the post on the small gear is about 3/32" side to side, about 1/32" thick, and 1/8" long. I also noticed that the post on the larger gear was also showing signs of stress with some minor cracks near it. I fixed the smaller gear by using a utility knife to cut some of the sleeve away to make a flat spot (the sleeve is used to give spacing from the larger gear). I then used a 1/16" drill bit in a drill press (my opinion is that a drill press is a necessity in drilling a precise hole in the smaller gear due to the tight tolerances involved) to drill a hole approximately halfway between the gear hole opening and the base of the gear teeth. I inserted a steel 1/16" x 1/2" sized machine screw (that was the same length as measured from top of post to bottom of gear) and attached two nuts to the screw (I superglued the nuts to the machine screw just to make sure they didn't back off during printer use). I figured the two nuts would give the screw some added strength as well as some larger surface area to contact the larger gear's post. As for the larger gear, the post is kind of "U" or "V" shaped. To keep this post from shearing, I drilled a 1/16" hole in the middle of the "U" and inserted an appropriately sized steel machine screw. The machine screw (being in the middle) is now surrounded on three sides by the plastic post and now gives this post some rigidity/strength to keep from breaking off. I reassembled the printer with the cleaning station towards the back of the printer (away from the ink cartridges) and left the ink cartridges/cradle in the middle of the bar it slides on. After plugging in the printer and turning it on, the printer goes through all of its motions and resets the ink cartridges/cradle to the right and brings the cleaning station forward underneath the ink cartridges. Now the printer is as good as new (probably better)!! So far I have printed 10 pages just to test out the printer and everything works fine. I'll let everyone know in the future if I experience any gear failures with the modified pieces and how many pages printed out that they lasted. At the very least, as long as the modified gears last until I finish up my ink cartridges, I'll be happy. Hope this helps out others in fixing their printer instead of throwing it out. Good luck.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Chardon (3/14/05 3:56 PM) | + / - | Well, I seem to have the same problem with the Deskjet 3820 that everybody else does. It worked fine last night, and this morning the cartridge is stuck on the right, it makes a grinding noise and the two bottom lights are flashing. I guess I'm lucky it worked as long as it did. I've had it a year and a half and have printed at least a couple of reams of paper out, plus a 100 or more photographs. Could someone please tell me which would be the best HP printer to buy as a replacement? I would like it to be about the same size for space reasons, and I don't want to pay over 2 or 3 hundred dollars for it. Thanks.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Mijikai (3/14/05 4:45 PM) | + / - | My deskjet 3820 also recently stopped working. When I power it up, the case holding the ink cartridges moves to the left, and a blank page slides out. However, when I try to print a test page, the only thing that happens is that the power light for the printer blinks continuously. I have read all of the above posts, and would like to send the gear to Gary, but his website is down, and I cannot find any way to contact him. Any help would be most appreciated!

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by R Eberhardt (3/25/05 5:30 PM) | + / - | I've had a 3820 for nearly 2 years. I bought it from outpost.com refurbished.
I have printed 1000s of pages without problem.
I refill the ink cartridges for pennies.
For me it has been a good printer.
The only people who have posted anything on this site are those who have had problems.
It doesn't mean it is junk for everyone.
I tend to buy a new printer when one is available that does more and in a better way.
I am now thinking about a color laser as they have fallen in price. I have yet to investigate the comsumibles.
The HP basic design is nice because you replace the print head when you replace the cartridge.
Many of the Epsons are not built with that in mind. If the ink dries in the print head the printer is basically junk, which in my way of thinking is truly bad design.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Teraforce (3/27/05 8:43 AM) | + / - | Just curious, am I correct that the officejet v40 uses the same printing engine as the dj3820?
Also, does the dj 5550 use a similar method for the ink supply station as the 3820? (One motor for both supply station and paper) They both sound like the same mechanism, but I know that the 5550 uses different carts and I haven't heard as many problems with it as the 3820.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by afimirfcabible (3/27/05 12:19 PM) | + / - | Yet another to add to the long list. Same thing. New black printer cartridge, printer said it was incompatible even though it was the correct number. I put the old one back in and it slammed into the right side. I unjammed it and now it feeds paper every time I turn it on and sometimes eats the paper. Never printed again. It might be disposable but it should have lasted more than one cartridge. Actually if it said it was disposable, I wouldn't have bought a new cartridge when it was empty. That would have at least save me some dollars. The really sad thing is that I bought this because I always had good luck with HP. I guess HP caught the Compaq disease.

Out of the blue the print cartridge is stuck on the right side. I initiated an HP 'chat support' session at their website and after we went through all of the troubleshooting they told me they'll send me a new printer (DJ 5150). If this happens, and the new printer works, I'll be very satisfied. The DJ 3820 was bundled with a new Compaq PC from Circuit City in the Fall of 2002. Question; is the DJ 5150 worthless? Thanks. R

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by trosee88 (4/3/05 5:45 PM) | + / - | Like many others here, the cartridges got stuck in the right home position of my hpdeskjet 3820, so I did an online chat with a technician on the hp website. They told me that this has been a problem identified with this particular model. They are now in the process of giving me a replacement (HP 5150 I think) free of charge. My printer was almost two years old, so I don't think it matters if it is past warranty. Hopefully the process will go smoothly and quickly.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by LincolnR (4/3/05 7:43 PM) | + / - | We, as printer buyers need to take a stand against this disposable crap. Buy good-quality printers, stay away from companies like Lexmark that make just about nothing but crap, and complain to the companies frequently about poor quality. Companies only make changes when they LOSE MONEY. Make the company lose money, they'll make the printers better or they'll go out of business.

No costs since this is an exceptional case. They will ask for credit card for safety percaussion incase you dont send back the old printer within 30 days. If you do, you wont get charged. They also pay for the shipping (use same box since it has return address). Now I just need to wait for phone call so they can ask me for cc# and verify.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ben582 (edited 4/10/05 3:11 PM) | + / - | I had the whole gear problem but I was able to fix mine. A little side tab broke on one of the gears and I was able to cut a piece of plastic and superglue it in place. NOW I NEED SOME HELP! I know these stupid printers have "timing" I need to know the default positions to put things in when I put this printer back together. I read in another forum that some other guy fixed his in a similar way and put the print cartridges in the center and the head cleaner at the back. However, one of the gears has a notch to move a plastic arm in and out to engage or disengage the cleaning system. I need to know what to do with it.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Alex_Perry (4/12/05 1:33 AM) | + / - | Just had mt 3820 fall to the same fate, the cradle stuck to the far right. It was right after I replaced a black ink cartridge.
I paid roughly $170 back in late '03 when I bought it from Staples here in Canada, and it really angers me about all this talk about disposable printers. I don't have $170 to spend on a printer that wont last for 100 pages (that's a generous estimate of how many pages I printed).
I will never buy HP again as long as I live.
|
 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by SCarter (4/12/05 6:44 AM) | +1 + / - | Waaaaaaaaaahhhhhh! Stop whining and just get it replaced for free. Sucks you paid $170. What a rip off for a disposable printer. Guess that's what you get for being Canadian.

I live in a 3 floor single family, should I go to the roof and throw it off. (I know, pollution, city ordinances for improper disposal of trash, etc.) but do you think this may help.
The military uses HP don't they? I knew there was a reason I never liked this piece of crap.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by chedevl (4/19/05 8:57 PM) | + / - | I found your website trying to do some online troubleshooting of my deskjet 3820. I just did the online chat with an HP technician as well and they are also sending me the 5150 after I give them my credit card info. Has anyone actually received their replacement yet? I have to admit, I'm suspicious of anyone asking for my credit card info when they call. Why can't I call HP customer service and give them my info...why do they call us? Don't mean to sound so paranoid but someone please post when you get yours and let the rest of us know what's happening with these replacments. Thanks!
|
 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by SCarter (4/21/05 5:00 AM) | + / - | Yea, I already got two 5650's. Just don't forget to send them your 3820 or they will bill you. BTW, 5650 is sweeet.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by bandit (4/21/05 2:43 PM) | + / - | I received my replacement. I gave them my credit card info too and had no problems. I still had the box and everything for my 3820, but I had to take it out and only put the printer and documents into the box the replacement came in. Too bad the 5650 doesnt come with original box so I can sell it off. I bought me a 1315 All In One cuz I thought the 3820 was dead and unreplaceable. So now I have a extra printer. When you get the replacement, make sure you get the shipping label and instructions from the box. Once you package it and seal it, just go to a UPS store or UPS shipping center and hand it to them. You're done.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by mmmna (4/22/05 3:40 AM) | + / - | Huh.
Just had a 3820 given to me, verbal discussion was that carriage is stuck. I fired it up, the carriage was clearly not stuck, it was able to traverse the whole platen by itself during power up initialisation, without issues. Paper would feed as well. After a time period, both the carriage and paper systems would stop, power LED is blinking.
I repeated this test several times, and 50% of the time, the error would change and result in both paper feed and power LEDs blinking. Each time, for every test I performed, the printer was able to spit a sheet of paper, the carriage was able to traverse the whole platen area. I pulled out the cartridges, the printer acted totalle different - failed to initialise, blinking cartrisge LED, and when I opened the cover, the carriage moved to the 'I'm reall bad' carriage position - as expected.
I flipped power off, gently pulled the carriage back and forth, carriage was sticky over the capper/cleaner area on right side. Wiped the main guide rod with damp paper towel, applied a teflon based lube, stickiness is gone.
Still will not print, but will now initialise to a steady power LED.
Since the power LED is steady on, I performed each of the 2 printer self tests that are recommended by HP. Printer initialises by cleaning the heads, then the heads stay on the right side, the power LED blinks for maybe 2 minutes (as it would when the printer is actuall printing), but nothing is happening at all. Paper is not advancing, carriage is not moving. After the approximate 2 minute time period which I mentioned earlier, the power LED goes to steady on, as if it had completed its printout.
After this, I pulled the carriage to the left, and inspected the head capper/cleaner sled and the general area. Not much use on this printer - I've seen 900 series printers that have been filled to the brim with spewed ink and they would still print; this 3820s 'diaper' is still whitish in color. The sled, however, will slide front to back with finger pressure, and was found in the forward position.
This indicates, I believe, that the sled drive assembly is defective or damaged.
Since the printer is not supported by their parts system, I'm gonna tear it apart, looking for bent or broken plastic parts, and if I find none, well, I know the landfill takes these. If I find a broken or bent part, I'll probably still chuck it, but I'll know why it fails.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by chedevl (4/22/05 5:02 PM) | + / - | Don't worry, I read the posts. Yes, I "googled" you, but was curious about the problems with this printer as I liked it alot until the carriage issue. Printed great photos, ink was a bit pricey but I had another printer I used to print documents if I didn't need a super clean copy. I've checked back a couple times since as I was curious about this new development with HP replacing these for free now. Wanted to see if anyone had any success with receiving their replacment or not. So, yes, some of us do read these and I found this site incredibly helpful so THANKS to all for the info and help.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Rod Duggan (4/25/05 3:13 AM) | + / - | H-P in the UK strenuously deny any knowledge of this problem. Wonderful isn't it? Teams of Ostriches with their heads buried in the sand saying "there's nothing wrong". Extended warranty offered me a refurbished printer for $160 (£89) which is half as much again as I paid for a brand new one two years ago. That isn't really a help. Or a 15% voucher for any HP printer. Now when I buy my replacement printer can you guess which manufacturer isn't going to get a look in? Yes, bye-bye H-P.

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (4/25/05 9:03 AM) | + / - | We went to extraordinary lengths to make the whole procedure of posting as simple as possible. When you intially come to the site, there is a box. You type in your printer and you get all kinds of options like search the forum, printer kits available, etc. Problem is people don't want to take the time to do this. They want you to take your valuable time to research it and give it to them on a platter and all for free. Then if you don't, you get hostility. Incredible! Take a look at all the posts that say "help me" or "printer". Yeah, we know you have a printer and we also know you can't read or don't want to because you do get a set of posting rules before you post that tell you to provide a printer model and detailed description. Of course we can't make you read them, so you post some meaningless drivel that doesn't give a printer model or even tell us what your problem is. Even that is a lot more intelligent than some of the emails I get. Here's just one of thousands: can you help me get my lex mark working i dint no how to do this. That's totally unedited and of course no header on the email. sigh...

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by chedevl (4/27/05 12:42 PM) | + / - | Just note in my reading over the posts in my quest to solve my 3820's problems...I don't think anyone wants to hear about a printer being disposable if they've forked over a bunch of cash for the thing. Regardless of anyone's opinion of the HP Deskjet 3820 people have bought it, paid good money for it and have probably been happy with the thing up until now. I paid almost 100 bucks for mine when it first came out. Not only do I not think of 100 bucks as disposable as I don't go around throwing out 100 dollar bills, but I really liked this printer up until the carriage issue the other week. Printed great photos, documents looked great, etc. Even if a printer cost 10 bucks, who cares? Mine never said anyting about being disposable on the side of a box and isn't this website called "fix your own printer"? I didn't notice it was called "throw your printer out because we're a bunch of computer snobs". Even if it isn't top of the line, people have bought it and would probably like to know if there's any solution to their problem besides being told to toss the thing. It also now appears HP is actually standing behind the product and replacing it free of charge. Note to all: I didn't have luck getting the free replacement when I called. I only had luck going through the website and doing the online technical support chat. Mine is supposed to be arriving in 5-7 business days. I'll keep all posted.

This website isn't called waaaa waaaaa I'm a poor filthy slob that works at McDonald's and can't afford a decent printer so I bought a disposable one and now I can't afford my $100 rent. Here's a couple tips to help you make it through your wretched life: 1. Get a REAL job 2. Talk less 3. You get what you pay for, just like that disposable printer that you are crying about. waaa waaa waaa, someone need their diapy changed???

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by SCarter (4/29/05 7:34 AM) | + / - | I had two of them, first one I told them I used parallel and they said they were giving me a 5650. The second one I told them USB, and since 5150 has usb port but no parallel, they said 5150. I chatted with them again and told the guy that I use an AlphaSmart to print sometimes so I needed a replacement with a parallel port and he changed it from 5150 to 5650.

 | Great News Guys! by Ebony (4/29/05 5:00 PM) | +1 + / - | Hi Guys,
If you do the following steps and are experiencing everything that I say, I have great news for you:
1. Turn off the printer by pressing the Power button on the front panel of the printer.
2. Open the top door on the printer and leave it open.
3. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
a. Printer activity continues for approximately 20 to 25 seconds (feed roller activity, rollers alternating between turning forward and reversing, knocking noise, printer carriages moving from left to right but never going to the center, possibly a blank piece of paper printing out).
b. After activity stops, the Power light (green) and Feed light (yellow/orange) will now be flashing simultanously.
4. Pressing the Feed (middle) button results in activity and activity duration similar to the power up cycle noted above, with the Power light and Feed light continuing, uninterrupted, to flash in unison.
5. Pressing the Power button after step 3b, have completed will immediately power down the printer with no further activity or flashing lights.
If the above sounds like your problem then you will get a free replacement! It DOES NOT matter if your warranty expired. I bought my 3820 almost 3 years ago and I'm getting a free HP replacement!
Go to: http://www.hp.com/support/ipg/chat
Under Product line, select Deskjet and proceed.
Hope this helps!

My wife also got burned on a HP lap top. I have recently found out that most of their products are crap. I am looking for a repair manual for the 3820 but it seem the crooks at HP want people to just toss out anything that breaks. I will never puchase anything from HP/Compaq.
The problem with my 3820 is mechanical. What sucks is it still has the original cartriges. You'd think that HP would at least publish a repair manual for this dog.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (5/5/05 7:39 PM) | + / - | There is a black square on the top right of your printer. If you take the top off and shut off the printer and then turn it back on, your cartridges should move. I had the same problem when I put new cartridges in recently.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by bgeiger (5/9/05 10:39 AM) | + / - | I've had a 3820 for over two years but used it very little during that time. I got the same cartridges jammed on the right side problem that many here have complained about.
I followed this link to initiate an on line chat session with an hp technician. http://reviews.cnet.com
The technician stepped me through a couple of tests and then determined that the problem was mechanical and required servicing. Then he told me that they were giving special consideration to owners of this printer. They are sending me an hp 5650 in exchange. They'll send the new printer, I'll just plop the broken one in the same box and send it with the included prepaid shipping labels. Pretty simple fix. Some may say that it's a ploy to get me to buy more expensive ink but most comparable printers use expensive ink.
That level of customer service after two years is pretty outstanding!
Cheers hp, Brian

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by RMW (5/10/05 9:52 AM) | + / - | I'm glad to see that some people are getting a resolution to this problem. I am having the same problem with my printer which is about 2 years old and had light usage. I had email correspondence with HP support several times, did a support chat session and now had a call from a support specialist. Their solution is to send the printer back at my expense along with $99 and they will attempt to fix it but with no guarantees.
Unlike others, I'm not very impressed with HP support in dealing with defective products.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (5/10/05 2:01 PM) | + / - | You probably answered the questions wrong. You're supposed to make believe the carriage is stuck on the right side. That will get you a new printer. Try again. I wouldn't give up. Lots of people have gotten free printers. Try emailing one of the ones who did and ask exactly how they went about it.

Only problem is that I live in SA and I'm damn sure they aren't willing to send a new printer to me here. The online chat techi just advised me to go to my nearest HP service center. Great help that was. If it wasn't for the fact that i have quite a few extra cartridges, I'd have tossed this flimsy POC by now. Potential HP buyers be warned! | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by K. S. (6/1/05 11:22 AM) | + / - | I have had my HP 3820 for about two years now, and I have not had any of the problems that I read. But I do have one problem with my printer... I will not turn off. It even turns it self on.
This problem started after the one year waranty was up. I called HP and they told me that I could talk to a tech for $30. After that, I did not think it was worth that much to fix, so I just started unpluging the printer when I could not get it to turn off. After awhile it will turn off, sometimes. This has only happened three times since I had the 3820 printer. I do not use my printer that often. So I do not know if that is what is saving it from going out, but this has been my only problem.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (6/1/05 11:53 AM) | + / - | It doesn't consume enough electricity at idle to worry about leaving it on 24/7. Turning it on and off is probably more harmful to the electronics than just leaving it on all the time.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by K. S. (6/2/05 9:31 AM) | + / - | Thanks Moe for the reply. I heard that electronics were better off being left on. I just plugged it back in, and the powerlight is still on. Yesterday the powerlight went off by itself and came back on. I guess my printer has a mind of its own.

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by walterf (6/13/05 7:03 AM) | + / - | Moe: You seem to be the peeked 3820 guy I want to bounce this off of. I'm a retired hp service engineer with a speciality in printers. I have repaired the 3820 gear issue with a stainless pin in the gear that brakes and have made many work but it's only a short term solution. (the hp officejet 5110 has the same prob. + one other printer I know of) The gear will eventually split out. I have beefed up an original gear, doubled the thickness of the tab and anchored it better and am thinking of having it injection molded in nylon (I think the original is that material). It's going to cost me a few thousand dollars to get a few thousand of these gears made. I know the need is great but don't want to pull the trigger on this unless I have an outlet for the gear's at under $5.00 each, including shipping. I've read many of your reply's and you are dead on every time. You da man! Looking forward to your reply. Walt ps: I really like this printer. It's a bit noisy but it's fast and the print quality is excellent. I use one on each of my systms. We both know it's major weakness and we could speak for 1 hr. + on why this is happening.
|
 | Re: Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (6/13/05 9:07 AM) | + / - | I wouldn't spend that much money on doing the gears. The printer is obsolete in today's market. There isn't any way I could move thousands of them. Then there is the fact that HP is replacing the 3820s free with newer models. That's quite a lot of money to invest just because you like the printer. There is a foreign outfit making the gears out of metal. I think they're about $15 US. A bit expensive.

The other day I set it to print, it got jammed and when I came back I found it had thrown out 2 tiny little pieces of plastic. It is still printing just the same and making less noise. When it gets confused, turn it off, unplug it and give the memory a chance to clear. Works for me . . .

Every time I "boot" it, all I get is an empty page rotated through...doesn't even appear to try to print. Ahy suggestions other than making this little "B" a new boat anchor?

They won't work. Then he will replace you're shotty old printer with a new 5650 printer. When he asks, tell him you use a parallel cable for printing.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by pmgiant (6/26/05 3:14 PM) | + / - | Hello!
I have one of these printers, and I found a way to fix the most common failure, that looks like a permanent paper jam or head stuck in the rightmost position.
This problem is quite easy to solve with pliers, screwdriver, some super-glue, 1 thick and 1 thin needle and a source of heat (gas oven or candle). The cause is one small (or two) plastic part in the head-cleaning unit, that is basically to fragile for the forces it is carrying. Under normal conditions the part gets broken after a few months.
repair steps: 1. unplug the printer from the power, remove the whole casing box, 2. Take out the black head-cleaning unit, on the right. It can be done in two ways. The harder one comprises tearing the printer into tiny pieces, the easier needs pliers / sth. to cut the metal casing... I prefer the latter, so: 2.1 remove all screws from the cleaning unit. 2.2 bend / cut the metal parts holding it in place 2.3 remove the screw from the small, black part between the unit and the long, black, rubber, rotating part (I don`t know the proper english word ;) 2.4 pull the unit out.
Now, three more screws appear on the left side of the unit. Remove them, but be careful, because there are two springs waiting to be lost...
The damaged part(s) are the two, small, white wheels with teeth :) all dirty with black ink, in the bottom-right part of the mechanism.
It shall be fairly easy to see the damage - tiny parts broken off the wheels. Use the needle (you`ll need to break it into smaller parts to fit) as a "backbone" of newly formed replacements (use the glue). Some holes need to be made in the wheels first, using the same needles, warmed up in a flame.
After doing the wheels functional again, you need to assemble the whole thing back. There is one more important step to be taken, it needs some precision.
As the printer`s mechanism makes some assumptions about the phase of the cleaning unit`s position, you`ll need to learn the way it operates without it. Try to hold the printing head in position right after pushing the power-on button. There will no longer be a paper jam, for intially the cleaning head is keeping the head still.
So, the last stage involves some mechanics. 1. Make sure, that the mechanism inside the cleaning unit is locked in a state, when the rotation of the outer, white wheel is transferred to the cleaning part (the one moving back and forth). 2. Put the cleaning unit back into the printer, bend back the metal casing, join the black, rubber, rotating thing with the cleaning unit with that screw. 3. Move the head to the right, and 4. rotate the black, rubber thing to make the cleaning unit lock the printing head.
If you push the cleaning head too far, it will not be in phase, and all the tiny parts you have seen in the unit will be subject to even greater stress. It could break the teeth, and there will be no remedy for this, but buying a new printer...
Enjoy the repair :) Pawel

I had the cog fixed last year by the guy in the UK but it broke again and he doesn't seem to be doing it any more. I have been talking to HP in New Zealand and they tell me there's no evidence that there was a problem with the 3820 and so they refuse to do anything about it (other than to offer me a reconditioned 3820 at a price comparable to a new model. Some deal!!!).

|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (7/1/05 12:28 PM) | + / - | It's too bad your cradle is broken. Now if you had 2 blinking lights as described in other 3820 threads you could get a new printer from HP. Funny thing is, HP doesn't check the printer when they get it back so they'd never know if you were unscrupulous enough to pretend you had 2 blinking lights instead of a broken cradle.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by deaks (7/1/05 12:37 PM) | + / - | all i know is if you go to HP website and talk with an online tech they do a bunch of bs tech stuff with you and then tell you "well although your printer is out of warranty,, HP is aware of this problem as many customers are having the same one,, so HP is offering special consideration for those who have this Printer to receive a free Printer whis is the HP 5680"
so everyone stop trying to even fix your printer and just go talk with a tech and get a free one. they really give you one. i already got mine.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Ewen (7/26/05 11:02 PM) | + / - | It appears I have been more fortunate than many others - I have been using my 3820 for nearly 3 years without problem, until recently when I also had the two blinking lights, and similar mechanical symptoms to those previously described.
I emailed HP through the Australian web site, who suggested I try cleaning cartridge contacts, carriage rod and encoder strip. In the process of doing this, I found that the tray into which the cartridges dock would slide in and out, so I pushed it fully inward. This freed up the carriage movement near the docking position.
Interestingly, when I now power up the printer, it seems to do this normally with just the power light on. The light will flash when I try to print, but nothing happens mechanically. When I open the top cover, the cartridges remain to the far right, but can now be manually moved. The docking tray remains concealed in the fully inward position.
This is still suggestive of the "broken cog" (although I have not been able to work out how to disassemble the printer to verify), but does seem to tie the "flashing light" symptoms and the "no print output" symptoms together, as have been previously reported by many others.
The H-P response to my original email suggested I contact a "Customer Care Centre" if problems remained. On doing so, I was informed that "there may be a 33 dollars (Australian) fault diagnosis charge applicable". I then suggested that I was not prepared to pay 33 dollars to be told that the printer could not be fixed. I was then told that HP were prepared to offer me a brand new replacement printer for 69 Aud, the DJ3745. A quick search revealed that store prices are similar, or lower, for this model. Obviously, the replacement offer made to North American customers is not being extended to customers in the antipodes and other places.
I will not be accepting the H-P offer. My replacement printer will not be H-P. Incidently, I do have a second printer - a Cannon bubble jet that has been in continuous use since 1993.
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by latimers (7/27/05 12:18 AM) | + / - | Progress!!!
After writing two fairly strong letters to the head of HP NZ, they have just offered me the choice of a new printer (can't remember the model number and they didn't have one in the country anyway) or a "demo" 3820. Since I have about $145 worth of "spare" cartridges for the 3820, I chose the second option. They will even include two new cartridges. If it fails within three months, I am to contact them again.
Shows what you can do if you persevere.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ekeithk (7/28/05 6:30 PM) | + / - | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ekeithk (7/28/2005 6:21 PM) reply + / - I've read a lot of the posts about the HP 3820 (HEWLETT/PACKARD) http://www.hp.com/, HEWLETT PACKARD CO ( HPQ - NYSE ).
It seems the majority of the problems are related to the cartridge jam. Interestingly enough, I don't see anyone with the same problem I am having.
I have just started having a problem with the paper feed, which seems to pull - or more likely - not to pull from one side even with the other side. As a result the printed text or images is scewed with a bow affect and the paper is jamming as it exits - or more likely - does not exit from the exit guides. I paid $99.00 for this printer at Walmart less than two year ago. I've only replaced the black cartridge once and have never replaced the color cartridge.
The first printer I owned was an Epson Stylus Color (no model style number) and it worked for at least 7 or 8 years. I made the mistake of using after market cartridges which is probably why I'm not using it still, today.
I've always had reservations about Hewlett/Packard products, as I have heard many complaints from owners of other HP products. But at the time of my purchase, I was in desperate need of a printer and 100 bucks didn't sound too bad, compared to the $500 I paid for the Epson Stylus back in 1995.
I remember when I printed the first document on the HP 3820 (HEWLETT/PACKARD) and I thought the damn thing was possessed. It spat, cracked, ground, smacked, and made the nastiest noise I've ever heard. I thought, "damn, no wonder this thing was $400 cheaper than my old printer. Their pawning this beast off on unwary consumers.
So now that I have to exorcise this beast, you can put me down for the class action suit for emotional distress, split personality, and obsessive-compulsive behavior. I think I'll take it down to the Goodwill store, and raise a few eyebrows, as the thing looks nearly brand new. Before I do, though, I'll mark out the 3820, and with an indelible marker, mark this beast as the HP 666.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by latimers (8/4/05 10:49 PM) | + / - | UPDATE
The "demo" 3820 that HP NZ provided me with lasted about a week. Then it stopped working with the same symptoms as my old one. I suspect the cog has broken in that one too. So much for the HP NZ theory that there is no problem with that model.
I now have, compliments of HP NZ, a brand-new 3845 with a couple of extra ink cartridges. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Glad to hear that you like to fix printers rather than scrap them! Do you know anything about a Canon Multipass MP730?
I'm about ready to scrap it because the only response I've had from Canon is to take it 145 miles one-way to an authorized service provider to get fixed or that I am eligible for a discount on the purchase of a new one!
Being as this one has only lasted for 13 months and has only been lightly used, I certainly wouldn't want to spend this kind of money on anther of Canon products!!! I liked my old HP deskjet that is still running for my friend!
The error message in the screen says" ROM ERROR 6511. The only way for me to turn on the printer is to plug it in. I can't make ANY buttons work. The only way to shut it off is to unplug it.
Any ideas on how to fix it or is this one just a very expensive paper weight?
Thanks for any advice! Treese

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Stephen (9/25/05 6:35 PM) | + / - | Replace the color cartridge, it primes it and tests it even when you are just printing black.
To the person who said NEVER use water on electronics, you are MISINFORMED.
It's advised to rinse things with distilled water.
You can immerse clean boards in distilled water and then let them dry and they will work fine.
What you don't want is residue from hard water, or cleaning agents drying on a circuit board.
HP support recommends cleaning the contacts in the plotter carriages with "spit on your finger", (I was told by one of the HP support people personally).

If you turned it on and off enough times the flange on the service station gear would break off and you would qualify for a free replacement printer with new ink cartridges.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by vincej (10/10/05 10:10 AM) | + / - | After looking over just this one site, it is amazing to see how a big company like HP can produce such a piece of trash. I am now ready to throw this piece of garbage out the window and I vow to never purchase another HP product. I too paid over $100 for this unit not the $40 others paid - aghh! I just purchased a new color and black cartidge for his thing and am livid that they cost almost $100 CA. If anyone in Canada still has a working DJ3820 and are looking for new ink (opened - but new) let me know I will throw in the printer.

|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by vincej (10/10/05 3:43 PM) | + / - | After my last rant I was so upset I phoned HP. They are going good on replacing my DJ3820 with another DJ3820W. You should know that it is well beyond the original warranty. At least this way I will get another 90 day warranty on the replacement printer. I can at least use the ink I have on hand. I had to give them a credit card number before they would ship the printer. I am then to return the old printer within 10 days and I will incure no costs. It will be interesting to see if the replacement is any better. Phone them - it just may work!

The cartridge moves when I unplug the printer and turn it back on, but nothing moves when I try to print. I've tried rebooting, replugging, praying to the HP gods, and as a last resort, calling HP customer service, who kept me on the phone for 10 minutes while she very slowly typed in my information, before she told me she couldn't help me. Any advice for fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (10/15/05 3:42 PM) | + / - | Um, did you ever think to read the thread? Only about 100 people in the thread have gotten their 3820 replaced totally free! Follow the advice in the thread.

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (10/27/05 9:46 PM) | + / - | I repair printers of all makes for a living. Originally starting as a warranty service agent for Olivetti, Canon, HP, Lexmark and now Epson printers. I have had over a dozen 3820 units with the same broken locking key on the service station assembly. This appears to be another case of poor design or planned obsolescense.
My advice is to bin it, as we tried to repair some by drilling a hole in the remaining plastic and fixing a metal pin into it, but this only worked for a few days before the plastic split.
I am continually having arguments with these companies over poor design issues and the 3820 is just one of many. Olivetti used to listen and often our devised fixes would become a standard warranty fix.
None of the other companies seem to care. Though Epson is starting to listen to a design issue I am currently looking into, but I wonder how far they will go to improve their products.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by stallion (11/7/05 5:58 PM) | + / - | Does the replacement only work if it is legitimately broken? They told me I had to send the defective one back in. Any thoughts?
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (11/7/05 8:10 PM) | + / - | I can guarantee you that they will never even take the defective one out of the box you send it back in. I remember some years back when you could trade in 4 old HP3 printers for 1 new HP5. The proviso was they had to be working. I fixed up a bunch of them where they were barely working and sent them in. I got 3 or 4 brand new 5s for my efforts. Years later, I saw the returned 3s(still in the boxes HP provided for return) piled up in a salvage company warehouse. You really think they're going to spend the time to test them and if you lied, ask you to return the new printer? They're going straight to the dump.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by steven964 (11/20/05 9:39 AM) | + / - | Did you ever have to scrap a HP 3820 orHP 5110 because you couldn`t get this gear in the service station. I bet if you repair printers you had to do it a lot of times. I couldn`t stand it anymore to scrap perfectly good printers because of one little gear, so I made a plan. We had an original gear analised in a lab and a tool made to manufacture our own gears on a plastic injection mould machine. There is a difference. Our gear is made of a Nylon that is much less brittle and stronger than the original gear. We are now selling these gears worldwide to help other printer repair shops like us to give better service to our customers. We have installed this gear in 1000`s of these models without any problems. We also supply you with a pamflet to explain to you how to install the new gear and to prevent it from breaking again. If you are interested, please mail me your details at stevenh_964@hotmail.com. We will send you all the details.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (11/20/05 10:56 AM) | + / - | Why, oh why would anyone want to go through all the effort, mess, time and money to replace the gear when they can get a newer, better printer for free from HP?
|
 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (11/20/05 11:07 AM) | + / - | Because HP is not that friendly to replace these models in other countries like they do in the US.
|
 | Re: Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (11/20/05 12:16 PM) | + / - | Not true, we've had forum readers from several countries get theirs replaced for free. Read the whole thread, and when you're done there are a few other threads on the 3820.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by gjcmko (11/20/05 1:49 PM) | + / - | Just finished on-line chat with a technician through HP's website (www.hp.com). If your printer's cartridges are stuck to the right and you can pull them to the left, they will walk you through this, then agree to send you a replacement HP 6122 for free. You are required to give them the SN of your printer and will be required to ship it back once you receive the new printer; they will pay the shipping if you use their carton and labels. They did require me to give a credit card number via a phone call; they say it will only be charged if I do not return the broken printer in 30 days.
I thought this was a satisfactory solution and urge you to take the 10 minutes it required.

If you don't like the site, why are you here commenting about it?

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (12/1/05 4:05 PM) | + / - | It is threaded, you just have to get an account and change the default forum display. With 400 directionless posts visible in a single major thread, it's never pretty. Thank Google search, for making this #6 in the results page for "deskjet 3820".

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by stallion (12/15/05 12:45 PM) | + / - | I'd try it again. Although I can't say for sure, I have a hard time believing they would all of a sudden stop replacing the 3820s when they've been doing it for quite a while. What problem exactly are you experiencing? I have heard from a few buddies that if there's something else wrong (not a stuck carriage problem) they won't replace it. Good luck!

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (12/15/05 3:33 PM) | + / - | Blinking lights & carriage either stuck to the right or now sometimes it will SLAM to the left and send out a blank sheet then return partially home. Initially got a paper jam error but no actual jam.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by dogmom (12/15/05 11:29 PM) | + / - | Had hubby try again this evening, same response from HP support. They offered a list of refurbished to purchase or 15% discount if we bought one online from them (thanks, but no). Also checked hp website to see what the 5150, 5650 & 6122 were like, but they are no longer listed... maybe they ran out and that was the end of the replacements??? Found a fair price locally on a 1610... keeping my fingers crossed.
|
 | Re: Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (12/16/05 4:44 PM) | + / - | HP stopped replacing the 3820 for free. What they offer with discounts is refurbished junk. I got a fix for one of my 3 printers from a posting. A prawl breaks on the gear that drives the cleaning basket back and forth. I tried to figure out a way to bypass this but the firmware is written to look for the stall limits during cleaning cycles. I thought it was another problem but I tried a fix on the gear and proved that was it. A set of gears from HP for this thing is $60 and it would depend the condition of the rest of the printer if it is worth it. It is the best for printing I have had so far. I can run the cartridges dry. When I got a message they were low, I still was able to print for a month. Newer printers stop working when the message first apears. Epson is bad for this and cannot compare to the HP. I paid HP for a swapout when my first one quit. I have inherited two broken ones and plan to get them working as spares. This repair is not for those in a hurry. It takes time and mechanical ability to do it. If you search another one of these sites you will find the info on how to do this.
|
 | Re: HP products by Adam Steele (12/23/05 9:59 PM) | + / - | I'm disgusted with HP products . I've a printer DJ3820, a PC and I'm not satisfied with eiether. I believe the firmware checks the no of pages printed and tries to estimate when it can safely give a failure. I had the same printer head not moving problem and I got a mechanic "who specialises in HP Printers" look at it. He did something with the firmware and there my printer started up again. There was no difference at all between the new prints and the prints taken when the printer was in pristine condition. Beats me how can HP people still calim thier products are best... this is such a lousy thing to do with people who naievely trust brands
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (12/23/05 10:16 PM) | + / - | Pick your poison. There are a heck of a lot of negative Epson posts on the forum. There are also a lot of venemous Brother posts. The HP 3820 was one of HP's poorer designs. You shouldn't label all of HP's products bad because of one model. You won't see 1/10 as many problem posts on any of the other HP printer models. I'd have to agree with you on the HP computer comments. HP was never known for their consumer line of computers. Never thought much of the Compaq name either. Two wrongs never made a right.
|
 | Re: Re: HP products by Anonymous (12/24/05 5:27 AM) | + / - | There are two boards of postings on the 3820. One has info about the gear problem and possible fix for those inclined to do so. If the printer hangs to the right and you get it free, it will run the head back and forth then to the left and slowly feed a piece of paper. That means the gears that drive the cleaning basket back and forth is broken. There are tabs on two gears involved and usually the smaller gear is broken. On a suggestion on a post I removed it and used a paperclip to make a new tab and so far it is working great. On one of the boards there is extensive discussion about this, including disassembly and what is needed to modify the gear. When you search for the HP Deskjet 3820 problems you should get two boards. One is this one and the other one with the same stuff and a possibility that replacement gears can be gotten.

To use a paperclip is chancy, but if done right could outlast a new gear. There is some company in europe that has made replacements that are harder. The problem both sources are foreign and somewhere and somehow there has to be someone to get them and make them available here on this continent. It's a iffy situation as location info has to be given and a way to send funds. There is a posting above that gives a email address and if you trust paypal could be a way. I have a email sent and waiting for a response. It is near the New Year and things could be slow until the holiday is over. HP should really be doing this. I think every one of these have broken. A sure sign is if the printer when the head finally moves to the left and feeds a piece of paper through slowly and the lights blink it is 99% a broken gear. If someone at HP is reading this you should hand your head in shame and give back your so called top support award.

 | Thank You Moe by Adam Steele (12/27/05 9:24 PM) | + / - | I appreciate your view on HP products, and to be fair I appreciate the hard work HP undergoes for it's products. What hit me really hard is that I got used to the lovely prints I used to get from the HP DJ3820 when it was new and believe me I used it to great efect for my presentations, resumes and my job projects. The printer came very cheaply @ Rs 6000/- (that's ~ US$62.5/-).At One time I was appreciated for going the extra mile for my organization for an MSExcel project. The fairy tale crashed one day around a year later. The coincidence was remarkable and it hit me that HP seemed to have designed a one year printer. As for the "mechanic who specialises in HP products" was actually and embedded electronics pro.He didnot reveal the exact cause and so I have been ranting ever since. Thank you for replying to my post with a balanced opinion.Much Appreciated.

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (12/29/05 6:30 AM) | + / - | There is a lever that detects if there is paper and may be broken. This printer has a rear door to help resolve paper jams and needs to be properly installed so the paper activates this paper sensor. This printer has very smart software in it but cannot work if there are mechanical problems. You may want to remove this door and look towards the top to your left from the back side and see if the lever is free. Sometimes a paper jam will leave a piece of paper either keeping the lever from moving or has jammed it to sense paper all the time. If a piece of paper was pulled through in a Jam then the lever could be broken. That's the reason for the rear door. The printer knows that when it starts a print or just power on and the lever is already making the sensor it blinks the feed light saying that there is a paper jam. The light can be two things, paper out or it is sensing paper in the rollers when there should not be any. I have been through this with mine. I have three with 2 working and going to fix the other one. It belongs to a friend and now there is a possiblility that it can work again is bugging me because a newer HP does not print as well and no faster. I am taking my time to try and get replacement gears instead of the paperclip fix. Nothing wrong with it and it is working for me now. It should not have to be that way.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by tayeree (edited 1/4/06 3:51 PM) | + / - | Ink cartridges are all the way to the RIGHT of the printer, and WON'T move. How do i move it so i can print?
|
 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/4/06 6:25 PM) | + / - | To tayeree: You most likely have a broken gear. It is probably jammed by the cleaning mechanism. Mine did this and after I moved it and moved the head and power on it goes to the left and sometimes right and back to the left and slowly feeds a piece of paper through. This is typical of a gear that moves the cleaning mechanism back and forth. I fixed mine with a paper clip but working on getting some new gears. It is from a foreign country and waiting for a payment method. There is a lot on this board about this. I have had two of these printers fail the same way. So far the rigged one is working great. If you get the cartridges free your printer will not print until the gear is fixed. This is a flaw on this printer. Good luck.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/8/06 10:37 AM) | + / - | I have a DeskJet 3620. I don't know how similar these are to the 3820, but have a problem that maybe you guys could help with. I tried printing something and the printer heads started slamming left and right over and over, making the whole printer move. I looked inside and a plastic strip had broken where it connects. Can this part be replaced or fixed (glued or something)? I would appreciate any advice.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by wasserfee (1/9/06 4:10 PM) | + / - | I cannot get my printer to print to the very edge of the page. Does anyone know how to change the margins of the printer so that I will be able to print to the very edge? it cuts off my images with white space around the edges. Very frustrating.
|
 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/9/06 5:44 PM) | + / - | Is this strip thin and has lines on it? If so it is the position feedback for the carriage (printhead mechanism) and is why it is slamming back and forth looking for the the timimg marks. Depends on how it is broke whether it is fixable. It is usually on a clip on one end and a spring tension on the other. Is it broken or just came off the clip?
|
 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/9/06 6:15 PM) | + / - | to wasserfee: As far as I know this is normal. I have two of these and both do this. It starts close to the top and has about 5/16 on sides and half inch on the bottom. This is printing from windows explorer using the fax viewer. On your computer it may go to another program. This is determined by the association of files. To get the whole picture it is probably the program you are printing from. If you are using the Win Paint program this is possible. If you are using XP use explorer and set to thumbnail view, right click on the picture and open with Windows viewer and Fax program, then use the print at the bottom and use the fax view which will print the whole picture. The others have a tendency to crop the pictures some. I have another program called Paint Shop Pro that I have had for a long time when I had Win 98. When it is first installed you have to set it to print the whole picture in the printsetup. A lot of this depends on the size of the picture. New cameras have larger pictures and to print and view the whole picture you sometimes have to make settings in the program you are using. I get a lot of pictures of the grandchildren and just use the print viewer in Windows Explorer (XP Version). Let me know what program you are printing from.

 | Re: Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/9/06 7:18 PM) | + / - | Yes...that thin strip is exactly what I am reffering to. It has a tear in it where it most likely attaches to the clip. It is at the end, a small rectangular catch hole in the center of the end, and it is torn at the top part of the hole. Can I fix this with super glue or some other home fix-it, or do you know where I can find a replacement?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Mike13557 (1/23/06 8:55 PM) | + / - | I had the problem where I would turn it on, and it would thrash around a bit, then spit out a piece of paper and say it was out of paper. What a stupid machine! I shoved back and forth on the cartrige cradle and shoved around on the white 'docking bay?' on the right inside and it works now!
|
 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/24/06 6:34 AM) | + / - | Mine did the same first and finally went later. It just means that you probably have enough of the tab on gear left to still catch. What happens the 'docking bay' gets stuck because of all the dripping ink and has to be broken loose and that is what so rough on the gears. Another thing is some cleaning rubber flaps that wipe the cartridges is tough on it also. Once it is all gone and can not be able to move the the 'docking bay' as part of the power sequence it will go back and forth and feed a piece of paper slowly and give an error light. It has to sense stalls of the paper feed motor to know it is moving the mechanism, but when it cannot and the printhead cannot move as it wants because it is jammed, that is when the sequence all starts to fail. It's cheaper to do this rather than have sensors to know where things are. Other than the encoder wheel on the paper drive there is the top open and paper present sensors. My paper clip repair is still working but making an attempt to get new gears I hope soon. There are posts on this. This printer still does a phenominal job of printing photos on plain paper.
|
 | Re: Re: Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/24/06 6:50 AM) | + / - | As long as the encoding area is not damaged you may be able to patch it. How did it get broken? If you can take it out and find some plastic about the same thinkness and bridge the broken area and not interfere where it goes through the sensor in the printing mechanism. Look at the postings and there are some who may have parts. Have you tried HP? I know they do not have gears but may have this part. Probably cost more than a printer. When I took mine apart to patch the gear this is one thing I had to be careful of. There is one post above who have the whole printer and wants to sell it. That would be a good source of parts.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/27/06 10:01 PM) | + / - | I just installed a new print cartridge (black). I get an error message that says: Inconpatible Print Cartridge. I ve not only returned a cartridge to the store, but I went to another store and purchased a new one. However, it is still exhibiting the same error message. I now am the proud owner of three (3) brand new HP 15 black cartridges which have all yeilded the same results. NOTHING... These cartridges are not cheap, and Ive only had this printer for about a year.
All of the cartridges have a designation of HP15 (c6615d). The new one is c6615d. HP tech support has been useless in this matter. They were the ones who told me I needed a new black cartridge. Anybody please any Suggestions?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Ralph0 (2/16/06 12:48 PM) | + / - | My HP 3820 is about two years old. It suddenly started printing everything involving color with a very reddish or orangish color. The cartridges seem to move correctly but printing a test page shows only red and yellow colors. I replaced the color cartridge and it made no difference. I have uninstalled the printer software, and reinstalled it with the latest HP driver. No improvement. I have tried to gently clean the contacts with distilled water with no improvement. Obviously, early on, I did the three levels of head cleaning and priming with no improvemnet. Up until this week, the printer has performed flawlessly. I can't think of anything else to try but wondered if you might have any ideas before scrapping the unit? Thanks!
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (2/16/06 4:01 PM) | + / - | If your printer prints red and yellow but no blue means there is either a problem in the logic board or the board behind the cartridge holders. Take a close look and make sure you don't have a bent or broken pin. Also the ribbon cable going to the printing mechanism may have a break in one of runs. If you can find one that just needs the gear, you can make one good one. The problem with this and many older printers is parts especially cheap enough to make them repairable. Printers are like VCR's, DVD Players and now DVD Recorders, it's cheaper to buy a new one. That is what they want us to do.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (2/16/06 4:20 PM) | + / - | About the black printer cartridge. I looked at the box a 15 cartridge came in and the product number is C6615DC. Bar code number is 025184 204471. Some are made in Ireland and some in Puerto Rico and I think I saw one with Singaphore. Apparently you have a connection problem in the holder. Can you put the old one that had run out of Ink back and see what happens. Also see if a friend has the printer and try the cartridges in theirs. I have heard of this before that depending on what country you bought the printer in and that cartridges especially the black brought in another will do this. Maybe it's a metric thing? Anyway the best think is trying them in another printer. I had this with a HP 672C once and swapped the cartridge with another printer and they worked. I left them that way and never ran into the problem again. Search the Internet with the phrase "incompatiable print cartridge HP 3820" and see what you get. Also do you get this message on your computer? Depending on what country you live in the drivers may be different. I found this out dealing with firmware upgrades to especially DVD recorders. You have to download from a site for where the recorders where sold.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (2/16/06 5:13 PM) | + / - | About incompatiable cartridge message. I read some old postings and see a lot of these. Thanks again for the help and that will close my inquiry.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (2/18/06 8:26 AM) | + / - | I have sent a email to the CEO of HP about this printer. If I don't get a decent reply I will mail it in. This is not the only printer with the gear problem. They used this design in several others. I have talked to others who have had the leaky black cartridge that caused most of the gear breakage. I just this morning cleaned what looks like half of mine that leaked and looks like a mountain of goo. When it dries it jams the cleaning basket breaking the gear. I am looking for a class action lawsuit and join it. HP was sued about putting a chip in a couple of their cartridges to prevent them from being refilled or refurbished for resale. At least with the 3820 I run mine dry. I can print a month when the first message appears. They are too expensive to throw away when there is still ink in them. When I get new gears I will let all know if they are for real. Good luck and keep the comments coming. I told HP to check this forum and they will read what I told them.

I thought it was a great little printer for the last almost two years and then suddenly BAM!!! Absolute crap. I've tried several of the sugggestions posted here for cleaning up the "mountain of goo" etc. I haven't torn it apart, but I'm sure it's the broken peg/gear. | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by kerrilu (2/23/06 5:10 PM) | + / - | OMG, I am so glad it's not just me. Mine has the paper issue, it won't roll or pick up, then it slammed, then it said the ink was out, all in one day. So of course I went and bought ink. No dice. Contacted HP, they said it was dead and out of warranty and "generously" offered to sell me an upgraded printer at a 20% discount. I even agreed to this (was in a hurry) and was told they'd FedEx it next-day free. It didn't show up. Called again, they said, "sorry, we're out of stock on the printer you ordered" !!! Cancelled that. Then, being a die-hard, I sent the d*** thing in to "authorized" Radio Shack, who said they'd fix it for $162! No way. The I was lame enough to buy another one on ebay for $16 so at least I could use the new ink. And of course, it doesn't work now, either. Jeez Louise. Epson, anyone? Keep me informed about any class action suit...

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Stephen (3/13/06 5:31 PM) | + / - | If you are talking about the ESD blade, don't worry about it, many HP printers do not have one for the black cartridge.
It may look like there is supposed to be one, but some carriages that look like they need one are made so one just falls out if you try to install it.

I tried putting more paper in, that lead to a catastrophy because now the DJ spat out ripped !!! pages! The noise was terrifying >:<| I gave it a couple of kicks and it worked fine until I printed its last supper! Then it died, not being able to move the little whatchyamucallit, oh print cartridge. It makes hilarious noises and our neighbours probably think we're running around the house with electric saws (vrumm, vrummm). Oh yeah and all that happened right after we bought the new black ink cartridge that has 25ml. Before we used 14ml but noone in the US sells 14ml. Oh well, there goes my antique item. By the way, ours lasted for about 3 years. WOW !

I chatted with HP and they said there was nothing they could do about it, although they have replaced everyone elses. Is it my fault my printer stopped working, of course not. They made a faulty printer, knew about it, and only helped those that made theeffort to contact them. Aren't recalls supposedto go out to the public? Dont you think this 3820 should have been anounced to the public? I think its a tad bit shady and illegal and bad business. Anyways, Im sending a letter to the President and vP of HP because I am very disappointed in how this is being handled. And i may send a letter to the Better Business Bureau as well. Its just not right.
Does anyone want this 3820 that is in prime condition, apart from the fact that the cartridge is stuck to the right side ?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (3/26/06 3:53 AM) | + / - | Well, it has happened to me, another victim of the 3820 also, I think that I believe in the self destruct code theory. We had this printer for about 2 years without an issue. I managed to free the ink carriage from being jammed on the right side, the printer has lost its mind now. When a print is sent to it the Happy Green light blinks indefinitely. I think that there is something up with the gearing on the ink cleaning unit......sounds like this printer has had the same issues from day one and I happened to fortunate enough to get this long out of it......I think the letter to the Prez is a good idea. I have lost my confidence in HP

It suddenly stoped printing, same problem as I have read in here with the gear braking. Mine is 2 years old and worked fine until tonight when I needed it most! That is my first and LAST HP product! If HP gets these made in China knowing full well they are not going to last ( as with anything made in china ), then we need to dump their crap back on their lap! I will tell everyone I know NOT to buy hp crap! HP should be taken to court for selling crap and refusing to repair them. Anyway, I am hot and am glad there is no hp rep here or that person would have an ear full. Let's stop buying chinese crap. Let's also boycott HP as they do not deserve our business.

I have had HP help line trying to help me correct the situation with my printer, but nothing works. The HP help line has so far denied me of the address and any wrong doing on the part of HP regarding these printers. HP is at fault! They tell the Asians exactly how to build these machines and that's exactly what we get. They know full well that the majority of people will NOT complain and will instead go buy another machine. That's the sad fact of todays society, too accepting of JUNK AND GREEDY manufacturers.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (3/30/06 12:49 PM) | + / - | Large hammer works real well. Smash it good all over the top. Pick up remaining pieces and toss in the trash bin. Go out and buy another printer. Spend at least $100 to get one that will last for awhile. Keep in mind that they are all mostly disposable. The cheaper models use cartridges that have less ink, but cost more money.

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Rick121x (4/6/06 12:32 PM) | + / - | So I went ahead, drilled and pinned with two pieces of paper clips, the two gears that drive the transfer case. The rotated freely on the plastic shaft and the gear train seemed to work.
I pinned them firmly together so they rotate together as a solid unit. Either this assumption was wrong, or I incorrectly assembled the gear train - for the printer starts goes through initialization, then goes into a jam condition with a loud sound of gears slipping past one another's teeth. Not a good thing. But so far nothing additional seems to broken...
So I will wait for more information.... someone please help me!
Thanks in advance... Richard

I power it up and all i can hear is crank!..........crank!.........crank! non stop. So i took it apart. Roughly an hour jus to loose a 2Hex screw n break a few clips along the way. As i look deeper i notice that where the catridge parks (Home)on the right there is alot of ink splashed all over n down inside there is this collection well. When i plug it on now n press d power all i hear is dis annoying CRANKIN NOIZE. I believe its some sort of gear playin the A$$....LOL. Now i get this message on my screen sayin printer out of paper. Any bright ideas to shut up this thing on my desk and make it work....Properly....LOL

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by zeroshin (4/14/06 3:00 AM) | + / - | I'm having the same problem. I contacted HP both via chat and mail, but since i live in Italy they don't substitute the printer free of charge... they want 180€ + shipping bills!!! That's way more than I paid for it 4 years ago!!!!! Otherwise they are willing to refund the 25% of the price (but not more than 50€) of another HP product i will buy if i send them back the defectious printer.... This is quite a discrimination for someone who's not living in UsA and who has always bought HP products :( What can I do?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ronnybuck (4/14/06 9:11 AM) | + / - | I have three of these printers and all are broke now. One was a swapout with HP about a year ago. One was my daughters and I did the paperclip mod and it lasted about 3 months. The other is one from my brothers. I am now using a Epson Styulus 780 which is not near as good printing photos on plain paper. It is faster and the ink will bleed if a drop of water gets on paper. The HP ink seems to be more steadfast. I am trying to obtain gears from a foreign source without being taken. If I succeed, I will post as to what happens. When your printer goes bump, bump and bump and then the carriage manages to goe to the left and feeds a piece of paper slowly it is the gear. HP told me this was a limited use printer and that if you use it a lot maybe once a day the gear will break. This is from the corporate office. Their answer is pay $800 for what they use there. Are they nuts! HP has gone downhill on printers. I have two 672's that are still working. That was when the design was done here in the USA by real engineers. Now they are done in sweat shops in places no one ever heard of. Come on HP pull your head out and get back on track.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ronnybuck (4/19/06 9:41 AM) | + / - | I am in contact with a company in Czech that has both gears made from metal. They are woring on setting up a internet site so folks worldwide can order them. Based on as best I can figure the conversion a set is about $18.00 US and shipping Approx. $9.00. I am planning to get 4 sets. I like this printer mostly for the large ink cartridges and can print well beyond it says it needs changin. The text is not as good my old HP672 but bestter than a Epson Stylus 780. Anyway I will post the address as soon as it is available. They have a site but is not in english not set up for ordering the gears yet. All of those can may want to fix their on. It takes 20 minutes to get it apart to put on the gears and about the same to put back together. You just have to remember you are not working on your lawnmower and a little extra care is needed.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by ronnybuck (4/19/06 9:49 AM) | + / - | Again to those 3820's that go thump thump, stuck at the right or finally gets free and goes to the left and feeds a piece of paper slowly, it is the gears on the cleaning basket. There are two, a small one and a large one. The prawls break becasue when it initializes it moves the basket back forth against the limits stalling the motor indicating to the little brain in this thing that the basket is there and useable. If cannot do this first it will not do anything else right. The prawl usually goes on the small gear and like I did a modification to repair and then the big gear breaks. Very few fail becasue of power supply or controller board. Stay tuned and maybe help is on the way.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by madmark (4/29/06 8:15 PM) | + / - | Try what I did... took a broom handle and shoved it in the open printer, slammed it hard against the cleaning cradle really hard three or four times - jabbed hard enough to see chips of plastic fly out. Then close the printer! The lights went off temporarily! Then it made it's cranky noise again. So then I opened the printer again, yanked on the ribbon cable, tearing it out in one peice with peices of plastic still attached, then cracked and broke the motor housing away from the main cartridge slider, then bent and twisted and snapped the guide rods for the paper feeder, then twisted and cracked off the paper tray. Hmmmm... it doesn't work any better than it used to, but at least I feel better about getting a new one.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (5/3/06 10:45 PM) | + / - | Look 3 posts above yours. Guy has the same problem and he answered it. If you look through the other posts in this thread, about 100 other people have the same problem. There are other 3820 posts on the forum. Probably over 1,000 people complaining of the same problem. Until last December, HP was replacing the printers free. If you want to spend time on money on a printer that should be thrown away, there are lots of cheap fixes on the forum and people who have made expensive gears to fix the problem.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by derekw (5/9/06 12:24 PM) | +1 + / - | In gratitude for all the help given to me by this forum I have produced a guide which helped me when I fixed a HPdj3820 recently. The guide is available from:
http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/ whitmore_ancestry/download/HPdj3820-GearFix.zip
Join the above two parts together I could not get this message box to post the whole string.
My email address is included in the guide. If anyone would like to make improvements to this guide let me know and I will update it. You are free to publish this guide on any web site but if you modify it, without letting me know, please remove my name from it.
On 26 Jun 2005 a post was made by Pawel which included the information:
As the printer’s mechanism makes some assumptions about the phase of the cleaning unit’s position, you’ll need to learn the way it operates without it. Try to hold the printing head in position right after pushing the power-on button. There will no longer be a paper jam, for initially the cleaning head is keeping the head still. So, the last stage involves some mechanics. 1. Make sure, that the mechanism inside the cleaning unit is locked in a state, when the rotation of the outer, white wheel is transferred to the cleaning part (the one moving back and forth). 2. Move the head to the right, and rotate the black, rubber thing to make the cleaning unit lock the printing head. If you push the cleaning head too far, it will not be in phase, and all the tiny parts you have seen in the unit will be subject to even greater stress. It could break the teeth, and there will be no remedy for this, but buying a new printer... Enjoy the repair :) Pawel
I have little idea of what this means. Would someone please explain it in precise simple terms what settings need to be made to prevent future problems. I will then add it to my guide.
Thank you everyone - Derek

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by rayhetherington (5/21/06 10:56 AM) | + / - | Like most others who have written here, I too have a faulty Deskjet 3820, which doesn't print and has blinking lights (Resume and Power lights flashing simultaneously). I only recently bought the printer (second-user) as a replacement for a wonky Deskjet 940C. I got a couple of months out of it.
Thank you, Derek, for your detailed spread, HPdj3820-GearFix.zip. I'll try stripping down the 3820 to see if its salvageable.
Like many other HP users here, I have been committed to Hewlett Packard (HP) for many years, having owned a DeskJet 550C, then a DeskJet 850C, and two Scanjet scanners. But my more recent experiences with the Deskjet 940C and the 3820 have served to teach me that NO company appears to make dependable inkjet printers for the domestic market in recent years.
I am currently resigned to printing out on an Epson Stylus C64, which keeps drying out printheads while consuming small but expensive ink cartridges; an Epson Stylus Color 680 which prints well, only if there isn't a paper mis-feed, which is rarely; or my old dependable, but slow, Deskjet 850C.
I, like many others, think HP made the wrong decision to compete with Epson, Canon, Lexmark and others for the growing domestic printer market by cutting quality to curb costs. I previously paid the high prices for my original HP products solely because I knew they were rugged, commercial-quality printers that had low running costs. I'm glad I held on to one of them.
Now I find most printers are garbage, and it is extremely difficult to know which printers are worth purchasing. Sadly, the various computer magazines' product-testing doesn't usually extend to running printers over a number of months until they fail, and report upon that. That part of the testing is left to us to experience for ourselves.
I agree with many of the above writers that printers appear to be a disposable commodity, destined for land-fill when the first set of cartridges run dry. But this isn't sustainable in energy or environmental terms, and the likes of HP needs to waken up to this fact. Salvaging their reputation is going to be an up-hill slog.
This forum has helped me enormously, just by knowing that it isn't only me who has had problems with the DJ 3820. I feel like I'm among friends here. Who knows? As this thread grows and grows, we might achieve a class-action yet.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (5/30/06 3:39 PM) | + / - | HI, My name is David Nourani and I am 20 years old. I am a current student at UCSD and I have done part time work at a local print shop for over four years. I have found several faulty printer series and I believe that HP is purposely screwing over the average everyday American by not supplying the one tiny part that breaks inside of this printer, while they will supply just about any other part that money can buy. The part that has caused your printer to fail is a small gear inside the service station that breaks time and time again. The printer shop that I work at has received over 300 of these printers with exactly the same problem and all I can say is "Hp will not sell that part". Searching the internet will reveal case after case and EBAY is full of printers with the exact problem. ...HP needs to be hit where it hurts so that they get the picture, the picture that an established company such as themselves should not be allowed to prosper through fraud. I have contacted a major law firm about a class action lawsuit against HP and they are very interested in the case. As of now, I need clients who have purchased these faulty printers to come forward and contact the law firm so that they can begin keeping records of such cases. PLEASE COME FORWARD SO THAT WE CAN NAIL HP TOGETHER!! WHAT HP IS DOING IS WRONG!! You deserve to have peace of mind when purchasing products from an “All American Company”! Maybe next time we should all just purchase printers from Singapore, but then again, that’s probably where your HP came from….
If you have any interest in helping me in my quest please write back so that I can give you the appropriate phone numbers. I assure you that you will not be disappointed and that this effort will not go unrewarded.
Thanks Again, David Nourani Dnourani7@hotmail.com

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by VF Hodge (6/16/06 2:26 PM) | + / - | None of the problems mentioned on this site have bothered my printer. BUT -- After 3 years my DJ 3820 began to print color like the yellow was leaking. I don't print that many photos but when I do I like them to look ok. They printed SUPER before this. I did the obvious: replaced the color cartridge, printed test pages, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, went to the HP help site. Nothing worked, so I decided to replace the printer, went shopping. No 3820s sold in my world. A salesman said my problem sounded like a faulty print head (?) which would be expensive to fix. So I eventually bought a different printer, fancy print-scanner-copier 1410v. Turns out to be in conflict with the 3820 but I went through a lot of paper and TIME to find out that. The 3820 prints better text, so I keep in with my dinky laptop and the PSC on my PC. If I could find another DJ 3820, I would buy it. (And if it did some of the things you guys describe I would buy a chain saw to ... well, you get the picture.)

My 3820 began to have color problems after 3 years, like the yellow was leaking out. I tried everything: replace cartridge, clean head, uninstall and reinstall software, etc. Nothing worked.
Any ideas?
The 3820 prints text better than the PSC i bought, but the two printers have a conflict on the same computer -- a very time-consuming discovery.
Help?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by wormy92 (6/26/06 11:13 PM) | + / - | Well!! I am glad that I have found this site. This will save me plenty of time in scrapping yet another Compaq / Hewlett Packard POS!!! Sad thing is this thing made beautiful photo prints!!! It was to the envy of my sister-in-law!! She loved to lament me about how she had so much more experience and better equipment, but when the rubber met the road baby!!!, this little HP 3820 could crank out a pix that was better than original!!! Of course we used Adobe to touch up here and there but still, no matter how good you get the image, the final print can only be as good as the printer will output. I have now scrapped my Presario PC for a custom German PC and I am contemplating what to replace my HP 3820 with!! Brand new ink cartridge and all!! Maybe Wally world will take the ink back!! UNless the kids opened it up!! Geez!! The freaking ink cost as much as the printer does, actually, that is only the black cartridge!! Color is even more!! Well, I have at least one month to make this decision, my kids don't start school until August and that is one of the first things for school, making freakin reports!! Heck, when I was in elementary school, they wanted us to make our reports and crap by hand!! If you actually used a computer, it was graded down!! OK!!!!! OK!!!! I am B#####N at the wind!! I am just PO'ed that here is another POS that gets sent to the dump.... Oh what a minute!! Can't go there!! Have to go to a recycling center and just about pay to get rid of the damn thing!! ARGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

And guess what.... Yes! my 3820 has stopped working - all the led's flash as soon as paper is fed in.....
now, my field of vision screener is useless without this printer, but I am unable to buy one from anywhere now as they are obsolete.
Can anyone tell me if there is a replacement printer that uses the same drivers, so that I can just do a simple exchange - or am I gonna have to bring down an engineer at huge expense to install new drivers and supply a new printer?
By the way, the company that supplies these field testing analysers are charging £150 for a reconditioned 3820!!!!!!
HELP!!!

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by rayhetherington (8/1/06 3:07 PM) | + / - | Since my earlier post (5/21/06) above,I conducted a paperclip 'pin' repair of the smaller gear within the cartridge cleaning box of my Deskjet 3820. It was a relatively straight forward task, thanks to derekw's information (see 5/9/06, HPdj3820-GearFix.zip) above. Thanks Derek.
I found that the tab on the larger gear (Vee-shaped) was beginning to bend, therefore I reinforced it by installing a paperclip 'pin' down the inside of the vee tab, too, as other respondents (see www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/laser/24796) have noted. I also reinforced both gears with a thin epoxy-resin layer too, which should reduce the likelihood of the pins working loose.
However, I did notice that the moulded plastic spindle on the inside of the removable cover, which the large gear rotates upon, was a poor fit within the bore of the large gear. This permits sideway movement (rocking) of the large gear. I am sure this contributes to the initial bending and breaking of the tabs on both gears. I manufactured a simple plastic shim, or washer, 10mm (3/8") bore x 20mm (3/4") outside diameter x around 0.8mm (1/32") thick (I made this from the lid of a plastic ice-cream tub). I inserted the washer onto the spindle of the removable gear cover, before inserting the large gear. When the whole assembly is refitted, the washer prevents any sideway movement (or rocking) between the large and small gears, reducing the likelihood of bending or unseating of the new paperclip pins.
Preventative maintenance: Inserting a plastic washer, as above, to prevent any rocking between the large and small gear should help to prevent breakage of the pins on any printer that has not yet experienced problems.
I found that it was much easier to remove ink deposits from the cleaning basket and felt pads by washing these in a solution of sugar-soap (available from most decorators or hardware stores) and water.
I hope that this information helps others.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (8/2/06 9:05 AM) | + / - | HP DeskJet 3820 Broke.... Simply died... Printer cycles. Runs one piece of paper though, clanks on right, cycles again, clanks some more, cycles, clanks a few more times and quits.... Mostly the same story as every other poster on this thread. >:-(
Ok... any recommendations as to getting a new printer. Possibly using the same cartridges (hp c6578d & c6615n) since I have two full ones? (Home use, not a business)
O I wish I had my DJ520 again. It ran for years with no problems even if it was only B&W.... HP should be very ashamed for letting this printer wear their brand name.
Thanks

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Tibor (8/3/06 3:54 PM) | + / - | I found that practically all the problems mentioned above with this printer are realy caused by the broken tab on the service station gear (or gears), that drives it back and forth to clean the print cartridges printing head. As soon as you replace or repair those gears, the printer will print again just fine.
Some of you wrote that these 2 small replacement gears with the tabs are or will be available for purchase. If you know where I could order a set please post it on this Web Site. I would be more interested in the metal replacement gears, but the plastic gears would be fine also.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by abc123 (8/11/06 6:18 PM) | + / - | Yea I have a gay 3820 ...
It worked fine for a while... but then after I didn't use it for a while I installed new ink cartidges and then it never worked again...
It's the STUPIDEST thing ever! If I press the resume button, or w.e it is that checks for paper, the ink cartridge cradel will move wherever and then settle in the right corner... so I know it WORKS... but if I try to print something, it will say it cant move!! WTF ...
This is especially annoying when you're up late finishing a school essay and then when you're finally done, you get some gay crap like this and you're like "Hey... didn't I pay for this???"
I want to throw this thing out the window...
what's more is my parents have that "all in one" printer, scanner, copier thing and it also acts up a lot..
It worked fine... till after the warranty and then it started acting up
1. it prints really slow 2. you cany print multiple pages unless you sit there by the printer and pull them out RIGHT after they're finished... otherwise, stuff thats supposed to be on one page starts getting pushed down to another page so you have lines of text all on top of each other...
In my experience, the smaller, suckier hp printers last longer than the "good" ones or more expensive ones....
so try buying a really small one that takes its feed from the top, and only costs like 20 dollars... I have one of those from 2 years ago and it still works... un-like the other printers in this house...

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 -- free by Pebblez (edited 8/13/06 9:22 AM) | + / - | I have this same 'infamous' 3820 that worked just beautifully for almost 3 years until yesterday in the middle of printing important documents (of course) the cartridge got stuck on the right. Gently got it unstuck and then the exact same issues as most everyone else has expressed occurred - the blinking lights, the clicking, the solid light with no response, etc... After uninstalling, installing and trying every possible solution on the HP website the HP online tech admitted the hardware failure and then suggested a HP 1320 $300 laserjet as a replacement, failing to tell me that it was monochrome instead of color (minor detail) as he urged me to purchase it "now" with the benefit being that if you buy direct from HP it has less chance of getting broken in shipment(?) as opposed to one that they've already shipped to Best Buy or wherever(?). This after I asked him to let me know which HP printers (if any) came with the individual high capacity color toners.
He did admit that they were replacing the HP 3820 for free until December 2005, but short of selling me a refurbished 6122 for $92 + tax and shipping with a 90-day warranty, there was nothing they could do for me. He also let me know that they used to have a recycling program to help save these from landfill, but it has been discontinued.
So... the point of this post is only to say that if anyone has any reason to want this HP 3820 that was working perfectly until yesterday - I'd be happy to give it to you. Still have the box, CD, power cord, manual. Just let me know.
Also, if anyone on here has found a replacement for it that works as well or better that you've been happy with for a while - I'd appreciate the referral. I've tried other printers at different times during my time with this one and none have measured up in quality of printing, including some of the color laserjets and substantially more expensive inkjets.
Thanks!

 | Re: Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (8/18/06 6:15 PM) | + / - | Question is why would you want to? HP made a lot of better deskjets than the 3820. The 700/800 series is a good example.

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (8/23/06 5:12 PM) | + / - | Dave, i got same problem as yours. i got it unstuck from its home, but it won't print. you able to solve it?
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (8/23/06 5:26 PM) | + / - | I got help from hp website. seems there's a clip at the base of the carriage at home position that you have to push in using a screw driver, then you just have to simply pull the flex cable to get it unstuck. I got it unstuck, but it won't print anymore. much good it did me. hahaha!
|
 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Stephen (8/23/06 5:35 PM) | + / - | Pulling the flex cable is a bad idea as you can pull it out of the carriage board.
The reason you have to push on the clip is that a gear is broken, so while the carriage might be free, the service station will not work and the print heads will dry up.

Thanks! Gina

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by PACS Engineer (9/2/06 12:51 PM) | + / - | Hey, here's something new -- my mother-in-law has the same printer, same problems (won't print but thinks it has, gives flashing Christmas Tree on LED panel, says the printer cartridge is defective even after replacing is with a brand new cartridge, etc), and I thought simply updating the print drivers would solve the problem. I wish I had found this site a bit sooner. On the upside, my father-in-law is a bit of a marksman like Anonymous (post date 3-18-06) and would probably love to take a shot at this piece of crap..... literally. I'd post the destruction of this printer on the web for all to see, if I actually though HP cared.
Since the Jefferson Barracks bridge is closer, perhaps I'll just outfit this printer with a pair of cement overshoes, and be done with it.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (9/2/06 1:40 PM) | + / - | Both excellent ideas for the poorly designed POS. I really can't understand why so many people expend so much time and energy trying to keep the damn things going. Those who missed the extended warranty replacement are out of luck and should just take out your frustration by destroying it in an inventive manner and then go and buy a decent replacement.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (9/4/06 9:38 AM) | + / - | Two bottom lights flashing ... cradle stuck at right! I am getting the popup that says there is an abstruction but of course there is none. This thing is really a piece of $hit.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (9/8/06 2:27 PM) | + / - | My 3820 won't get out of its cradle either. I was just looking at a 2003 Consumer Reports issue that rated this printer as a best buy. HA.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (9/8/06 3:48 PM) | + / - | I'm glad you're maintaining your sense of humor. I remember a long time ago when Consumers gave a bad rating to a HeathKit TV because it didn't have a "cheater cord". I figure if you can build your own TV, the least of your worries would be a "cheater cord". A cheater cord for the uninitiated was a cord attached to the back of the set with a flimsy metal clip so you couldn't plug the TV in with the back off. (dangerous, you know) HA.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by cfgwal (9/12/06 6:41 AM) | + / - | Hi,
Does the following sound like the common problem of the gears?
When start up computer the 3820 pulls through one page and spits it out with no print. The ink cartridges go right to left and then back right. The printer makes quite a bit of noise like it is trying to pull paper. It then goes to a steady green light. If you print a test page the green power light will blink and then go back to a steady green. It never prints anything out. Sometimes when you send a print job the red light will blink. Our 3820 has survived for over 4 years in a home environment. Thanks for the help!

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3845 by Anonymous (9/29/06 4:17 AM) | + / - | I bought an HPDeskjet 3845, followed all the instructions to the letter yet the printer light is flashing and thinks that there is a paper jam. I've tried all the troubleshooting advice given in the manual and on the HP website, but it still won't print:( Any ideas?

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by @#$HP (10/11/06 12:23 AM) | + / - | I hate HP. It's really that simple. Like everyone else on this thread I was delighted with spectacular quality, and avoided thinking about the ridiculous cost of those ink cartidges. Then came the day I absolutely had to print out some designs for clients. A simple paper jam? Well not so simple. Both lights won't start blinking, the status box simply says jobs stopped and after 6 hours and two frustrating calls to HP, complete with their "try unplugging, looking for jams then buy a new one" email that was nothing short of insulting, I have nothing to show! Like you I downloaded the latest driver, checked the rollers, tugged at the cables and chords, cursed and prayed and for what? I'm gonna take that Italian guy's advice and just take it out and shoot it....except we don't have guns in Canada

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by moe (10/13/06 6:21 PM) | + / - | Printer is a disposable model. It's not really that heavy that you'd need someone to help carry it to the trash can.

 | Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (10/16/06 11:57 PM) | + / - | Yeah I have the same problem as everyone else! Stuck to the right with flashing lights. I've had this printer since 2002 and it's been great until I slowed down on it's use! Yeah I of course just bought new cartridges as well!

 | Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/20/07 11:26 AM) | + / - | Are you still wanting to purchase printers and where are you located? I am in Winnipeg Canada! The printer is not quite 3 years old, has had a lot of good use never dropped or abused or spilled on. Just before December /06 I printed something which worked printed excellent as usual. Few days, weeks later I tried printing worked as usual except blank pages came out.
Someone, told me make sure it is on line still to maybe reset it? Or uninstall HP Software then reinstall??
Images do show on my screen showing what it is printing, but since it doesn't print with ink--I don't see Ink levels before it prints??
Last, I did take the new Ink cartridges to a Island Ink Jet place as suggested--they were full?
I don't really want to junk it for many reasons including enviornmentally ones earth is polluted enough. But would try to keep if I can get to print good again. An excellent printer with great photo color images--worth trying.
I will of course, sell if you in a location close enough? Any feed back is appreciated!
Thanks!

 | Re: Re: Re: HP Deskjet 3820 by Anonymous (1/20/07 12:18 PM) | +1 + / - | If you take the front lid off and fill it with dirt, it makes an attractive planter. Other uses include doorstop, target. Don't expect anyone to pay you any money for it. Whatever your opinion of it is, the printer was a piece of junk from the day it was built. Read all the thousands of posts on the forum that agree with that opinion.

I cannot figure out how to synchronize the printer upon re-assembly. Thank you. Mike
