Try just installing a new cartridge - if you were using a generic it's very likely you got a poor quality generic that clogs the head, so go with genuine ink until the problem is fixed.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like I should try to fix the thing but there is another problem. I had thought about throwing away the 'newly' installed cartridge and putting in a new one but when I depress the ink button on the console the machine going into head cleaning and will not stop the heads so I have access to change the cartridge and I cannot find a way to get the old one out. Got any more suggestions? Do I have to take the cover off to get access with power off? Is there some release mechanism that is not obvious from the top? The manual says to not replace cartridges that still have ink in them but I would try it instead of buying a new printer.
Thanks for your help.

Epson printers are sometimes very stupid and do not let you change cartridges when you want. Start a clean and when the carriage is in the middle unplug the printer and change the ink. If you absolutely must you can *gently* push the head over to give yourself more room.

On all the Epson printers I've owned you depress and hold the Load/Eject button to remove the ink cartridge.

Unfortunately, the 740 is not one of them.

With my Epson 740 I got a Printer Basics manual but I would like to check the color matching options and manual says to see the electronic Epson Stylus Color 740 manual.
Where do I find that or is there another way to see those options?
Thanks,

flashing error message how i can the part with generate this error

Re: Epson Stylus Color 740 by Denny Conway (10/27/03 10:47 AM) reply + / -
jalal al-khabeer: If all the Led's/Light's are Blinking/Flashing on an Epson Printer, that indicates "Maintenance Request Error". The maintenance request error is actually a "Waste Ink Pad Overflow Error". Normally your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the INTERNAL WASTE INK PAD COUNTER...The need to replace the waste ink pads is measured by the amount of ink uses, which is determined based on the number of Head Drive Pulses, accumulated in the waste ink counter. When the total quantity of ink deposited onto the waste ink pads, during cleaning and flushing, reaches the set limit, the printer generates a maintenance request error and stops printing. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. I'm sorry, but as an Epson Authorized Service Dealer, there is only so much information and help that I can legally give and Epson will not allow their dealers to release that reset procedure...You may want to try doing a general search on the "fixyourownprinter.com" printer repair site, under WASTE INK PADS or WASTE INK COUNTER RESET PROCEDURE. You should be able to find quite a few references listed in the last six months and most included web-site links, for possible help on the reset procedure...You would normally have to order parts thru the nearest "Epson Authorized Service Dealer" in your area. If you are going to try and do the repairs yourself, just go on-line to epson.com and search for how to locate the nearest "Epson Authorized Service Dealer" in your area. That is who you have to contact to be able to order the part for you. You could also call the EPSON CONNECTION for SUPPORT @ 1-800-463-7766, or the "Epson Customer Relations Department" @ 1-562-276-1311 and either one may be able to tell you where the closest authorized "Epson Authorized Service Dealor is located, so you can order the part that you need. You can call Epson Tech Support @ 1-562-276-1300 and they may be able to help you with a part number, but you will be normally charged for the help on a printer no longer under warranty. By going to the Epson web-site @ " http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/Help/HelpPartsDistrib.jsp?BV_UseBVC ookie=yes ", you can see a list of recommended vendors that you can order parts through. There are no parts lists available on-line to use or view, that I know of. Its even possible that you may need to purchase a Service Manual, just to be able to do the repairs needed, if your problem is the Waste Ink Pads...I know this information is not much help, but at least you will know what your ERROR probably is ans what service is required to correct it...Good Luck! jalal al-khabeer: I'm sorry, but I have no idea and I don't believe Epson has ever released that type of information, even in their Service Manual. The only place available to even look, would be a Service Manual for your particular model of Epson Printer, if you can find one to purchase...REGUARDING SERVICE MANUAL AVAILABILITY: I have not actually checked, but I have been told that service manuals are available from: "NATIONAL PARTS DEPOT" @ 1-800-524-8338; "VANCE BALDWIN ELECTRONICS" @ 1-800-432-8542; "ATLANTIC EXCHANGE" @ 1-888-327-2822; "COMPASS MICRO, INC." @ 1-800-388-8595. my stylus 740 dosent write at allbecouse of dry ink. The epson support says that i should fill an old cartridge with Isopropylalcohol. and replace it. I did that but no change. It suppose to be a hole in the little pipe who takes ink from the cartridge. It is obviosly dry ink in that hole. So my question is. How thin is that hole whant size of pin shall I use to take away the dry ink.???

Re: Epson Stylus Color 740 by Denny Conway (11/3/03 10:13 AM) reply + / -
Hans: The problem is normally not that hole in the pipe, its usually that the actual "Printhead Nozzles" are probably clogged. That small pipe with the hole in it, can be damaged easily and I doubt that even poking it with a pin would make any difference. Its even possible that you could actually damage the "Printhead Assembly" while trying. Just to let you know, I do not work for "fixyourownprinter.com" or even "Epson Company". There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer and it's even possble that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem]. If you want too, you can try using the "printhead cleaning kit", available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com" and see if you can get the rest of those printhead nozzles to open up again. The KIT is around $10.00 plus shipping and it includes a syringe and some Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution. Epson fluid is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you use Epson inks...REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force. Damage can even occur when you are using the printhead cleaning kit method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. Sometimes with too much force, the nozzles can be damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a couple of days, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to disolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never disolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the small Epson Ink Jet Printers...Good Luck! Just went through changing the cartridges in my Epson 740- I tried doing it by looking at the picture inside the front cover. The third button from the right is WRONG. It should be the second button. Hold the LOAD/EJECT button down for over 3 seconds.

Re: Epson Stylus Color 740 by Denny Conway (11/7/03 9:06 AM) reply + / -
Anne...JUST SO YOU WILL KNOW: I am employed by an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer" and when the Ink Light/LED is FLASHING RED or SOLID RED, that indicates that your printer is in an ADD INK CONDITION. You need to use the Ink/Cleaning Button to properly change the ink cartridges, when your printer is in an add ink condition. You hold in on that button for about three seconds and then the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly will move over to the correct position for ink cartridge replacement and the Power Light will start flashing. Once you correctly replace the indicated cartridge and close the cartridge clamp, you then push in on the ink button a second time. Now "New Cartridge Initialization" will start and the Printers Internal Ink Counter will be reset correctly and the ink level indicators on your Status Monitor will also change to reflect a full cartridge installed...If the Ink Light is not on FLASHING RED or SOLID RED, then your printer does not think it needs ink. You cannot replace a cartridge and perform new cartridge initialization correctly, unless you trick the printer inthe correct manor...I hope your ink lights were on RED [solid or flashing] prior to you installing new cartridges, or they may not have been properly recognized by your printer...THE THIRD BUTTON FROM THE RIGHT IS THE "INK/MAINTENANCE BUTTON" AND IS THE CORRECT BUTTON TO USE WHEN THE PRINTER IS IN AN ADD INK CONDITION.THE SECOND BUTTON IS THE "PAPER/RESUME BUTTON"...Denny Conway

Re: Epson Stylus Color 740 by Shirley (11/13/03 3:14 AM) reply + / -
I had all kinds of problems with my 740 not printing. After doing the utilities check over and over again, I finally got it to print color only. I thought maybe my black cartridge had gone bad. In reading the PDF file on Epson's website, it said that if you want to replace an ink cartridge before it is empty, hold the 'load/eject' button for 3 seconds (the one to the left of the Power button) and sure enough, it worked! After replacing the cartridge, hold load/eject button again for 3 seconds and they move right back. Now my 740 is working great again!

Guess I should have responded when Denny answered me about replacing cartridges.
Anyhow, my situation was the same as Shirley's and pressing the third left button did not help, just ran another cleaning cycle.
But second left button put both cartridges in an open section where I could safely pull them out and pop in some new ones.
Now it works just fine.
