 | Epson Photo Stylus 820 by Dawn Robb (8/25/03 12:44 PM) reply | + / - | I print about 3-6 prints just fine, then all the sudden it acts like the black ink is out. I don't get any errors, it just doesn't print black ink...or if it does, it's tiny lines or spots. I've gone through the utility where you clean the heads and everything a zillion times. It seems each time I want to print it's this huge ordeal to get a good print. Anyone else had this problem?

 | Re: Epson Photo Stylus 820 by David (10/2/03 4:56 PM) reply | + / - | I am having trouble with my Epson Stylus Photo 820. I have been using refilled cartridges which may not help. The problem is the streaking in the color side. Black seems fine. Yes, I have done the cleaning utility innumerable times and am sick of it. It helps some. I end up printing on highest quality just to get something halfway decent. But it is very frustrating when I am under pressure to get a report out quickly.

 | Re: Epson Photo Stylus 820 by Denny Conway (10/2/03 6:05 PM) reply | + / - | Dawn & David: Just to let you know, I do not work for "fixyourownprinter.com" or even "Epson Company". There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer, but I probably don't have any good news for either one of you, I'm sorry to say. It's possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], or your "Printhead Assembly" might be possibly clogged. If Dawn is using refilled ink cartridges like David is, or even using Non-Epson Ink or Ink Cartridges in her printer, that could be both of your printers problems. All "Printhead Cleaning Cycles" and "Nozzle Tests" actually do, is to try and flush out old bad ink with new fresh ink. If your printhead nozzles are CLOGGED or actually BAD, then all those two tests actually do is to waste your ink. No matter what anyone says, all blacks and colors are not the same. Thats why all companies patient the formulas for there inks. Epson actually has many different formulas for just its black ink, that is used in many different Epson Ink Jet Printer Models, let alone the color ink. Generally if you are using Non-Epson Ink or Ink Cartridges in your printer, then you are using the wrong ink in your printer. Sooner or later you will have some type of problem, almost everyone does. David, as you are actually using the wrong ink in your printer [refilled ink cartridges], its even worse on the printhead assemblies and they may have already been damaged by using the wrong ink in your printer. Its even possible that you may not actually be able get the printhead assembly to work correctly again. You might want to try using the "printhead cleaning kit", available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com" and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again. Its around $10.00 and includes a syringe and the Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is the best cleaning fluid to use, by far. This fluid is capable of disolving most clogs, especially if you use Epson inks. If those fluids do not work, then its generally time to replace the printer. Its really not economical to have the printhead assembly replaced, because you can normally buy a new printer cheeper...TECH NOTE: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force. Damage can even occur when you are using the printhead cleaning kit method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. Sometimes with too much force, the nozzles can be damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a couple of days, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to disolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never disolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. If you do use the KIT and it helps, I would suggest that you use Epson Ink Cartridges, so that your problem does not reoccur...When you chose to use that Third Party Ink, Generic Ink, or actually used refilled ink cartridges in your Epson Printer, you took your chances...DAVID [and possibly Dawn]: AS YOU DID USE NON-EPSON INK, I GUESS YOU DID SAVE MONEY BY USING REFILLED CARTRIDGES, SO THAT IS SOME CONSOLATION...Dawn, I have no real idea if you used Non-Epson Ink or Ink Cartridges in your printer, but when those cleaning cycles and nozzle tests do not work, the printhead cleaning kit is the next thing to try...Good Luck!
