HP DeskJet 882c Belt?

HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by David (8/24/03 9:28 PM) reply + / -
Hi! I have a HP DeskJet 882c and what seems to be a shredded drive belt. The belt that had the ridges on the inside is toast. It's literally falling apart and the printer isn't THAT old. Anyway, I was going online trying to find somewhere to buy parts. Anyone know where to find a replacement belt for this thing? Thanks!

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by Bert (8/24/03 10:52 PM) reply + / -
The belt for your printer is P/N C4557-40049. It is the same belt as used by the DJ 700 series and other 800 series (with the exception of the 820, 850, 855, and 890). Don't give up, you have a pretty good printer within the scope of it's capabilities along with reliability and high cartridge capacity. I've never personally seen one with a bad belt so I suspect that it is a relatively uncommon failure. Remember to clean the sproket teeth on the carriage drive motor before you replace the belt.

looking for where to purchase a belt for my 812C printer - it was shredded also, but it is not a new machine - anyone know where to get the belts?

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by Bert (9/11/03 10:42 PM) reply + / -
Maybe the failure is more common than I thought. Other posts outside of this thread are also having trouble finding the belt. HP does not supply it any longer. Look for a scrap printer of the sort mentioned in my first post if you are patient and determined to fix it, otherwise get yourself a DJ 6122 (uses the 45 cartridge) and stay away from cheapies.

Add my name to the growing list of "beltless" HP Deskjet 722c printers. Notice small flakes of material dropping onto the paper as it was going through the printing process. Thought it was dried ink until my printer started making odd noises. Lifted the front cover and was startled to see that the drive belt was shreeding and the the black flakes were the remains of the rubber treads on the belt. Doubt if I have much more printing capability remaining before the belt breaks and or begins slipping. Desperate for a replacement belt C4557-40049. HP will not support and cannot yet find a source for a reasonable price. Help!!!!

Add me to the HP DeskJet 722c shredded belt club.
The plastic belt in my HP printer deteriorated and now looks like
long strands of horse hair

It really gets my goat to see so many folks with the very same
problem on HP products and nothing gets done about it.

HP is clearly aware of this situation buy can't care less.

I now belive like many others that HP deliberately designed the
belt to self destruct to try and get us to buy a new one.

Where I come from we call that extortion.

I would be willing to participate and support a class action suit
against HP for not recalling and replacing a known inferior part.

If anyone is interested I know a lawyer that is like a bulldog.
You need a dog to fight a dog. :)

Send me your email and I'll forward them to him.
If enough folks join up we'll have a good chance at winning.

Send your story to me at:

PS: Save the broken belts or printers to use as evidence.

Am I correct? : The carriage in my hp color copier 720 also uses the c4557-40049 belt. Is there anyone who will offer some guidance in tear down approach so I can replace it? It shredded the other day suddenly with no warning or signs of wear etc. Thanks, Dandy Dan, a do it yourself man.

Wow.. this is really discouraging. I was hoping to replace the belt, but it seems like so much trouble to find (if I can find) a belt for my printer. I was hoping to replace it until I decide to purchase a new one and was leaning toward purchasing another HP... but now I doubt HP will be on my list of options if parts are this difficult to find and replace. This is horrible.

HP OFFICEJET R40 PROBLEM AFTER BELT INSTALL by mrgalt518 (1/23/06 11:48 PM) reply + / -
Hi...I went through the drama of purchasing a new belt for my R40 Officejet, installed it (major drama), and then turned it on to get this error message, "Cartridge blocked, close cartridge latches, turn off printer and turn back on." I was wondering if anyone had this same problem or had any suggestions. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!!

The link to the belt is only given 8 times in this thread. The most recent is right above your post. It can also be found at the top of the page. It comes with printed instructions for the Deskjet 880 series. And don't you just love the ones that start off HELLLLPPPPP PLEEEEASE? I've got to get to the first order of business for the day, deleting posts that haven't adhered to the forum posting rules.

Just bit the bullet and ordered a replacement belt from this site. In UK terms comes to about £22 including postage. Seems a good deal to get what is really an excellent printer back on line. It may not be the newest model but the 720c colour quality is first rate and the real bonus is that you can get cartridges from Ebay for around 2-3 pounds each. Even the outdated ones seem to work fine. The alternative would be to junk the printer , buy the latest model and have to pay a fortune for new cartridges. A good quality, old printer, (3 to 4 years) has much to recommend it.

As an example of this, I still use a 1985 HP laser Series II, that still works very well and again cheap cartridges from Ebay make running costs negligable.

Hmmm.. My carriage drive belt (which is for the Deskjet 710C), just fell apart when I used it, all those tiny little rubber things flew through the machine.
Since then I've tried to figure out a solution.
Because the link "http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/specials/parts/belts/S313"
(which i've seen a hundred times), IS TOO EXPENSIVE!
So I grabbed a rubber band, and tied it to the two wheels, and then to the carriage, didn't work. Anyone else have a OTHER solution, or a CHEAP belt??

I already ordered and received a belt C4557-40049 for my HP color copier model 270 from another company before I found out about your company, but I need instructions to install it. I've read the posts and realize that there are links to various options, but I need guidance as to which option is the best to order. I'm happy to buy another belt to get the photo instructions for installation (S313), but I saw that you have a CD, called
"HP OfficeJet/Color Copier Service Manual" (S32). Does it have better pictures for installing the belt in a HP model 270 ? The ad for the belt itself, with instructions, references a HP DeskJet 700/800, not the 270 specifically. Are the pictures with that item (the belt C4557-40049 (S313)) the best for installing the belt in the model 270, or should I order the CD (S32) for belt installation instructions for the 270, Or do I need the (S317) CD to best show me how to do the job of belt installation??
Thanks much in advance for your help.. I look forward to becoming a customer - I've heard good things about your site in the forums, and yours was the only reference that provided guidance and helpful instructions - and that is what I need !!

The 270 is a bit more complicated to disassemble than the deskjets. The Service CD has disassembly videos that show the complete disassembly/reassembly of the 270. It also has troubleshooting procedures and p/ns. http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/specials/manuals/all/S32

This week (8/21/06) I experienced the dreaded shredded belt syndrome on my HP Deskjet 895Cse. Found this link and ordered the belt listed by Moe from the fixyourownprinter sales site. The $29.95 was totally worth it for me because I have so many ink cartridges left, the printer gives me decent quality and throwing away something that can easily be fixed is not good for the environment (shame on HP for their short-sighted greed). I placed the order on the 21st, received delivery on the 24th, installed in less than 45 minutes, including the time it took to figure out an alternative to the #10 torx (I found a small hex allen wrench fits fine). The instructions are pictorial and very clear - no missteps. I also recommend cleaning the service bay under the cartridge shed while you have the cover off. Thanks to Moe for a high quality service.

Thanks for this thread. I called HP today and got transfered to 10 different entities who kept putting me off. They couldn't even suggest another part to substitute. The same belt part is used for the Color Copier 170.

I am a school librarian and I was trying to order this for my school equipment. Of all the nerve, they asked me if I wanted to buy a new copier or an upgrade! And then asked me 3 times if I had a case number. Every time they kept transfering me I had to give the part number and the machine model.

Clearly, HP's help services are out of touch with customer needs. Guess what? I'll be the first to pass that on to the other 70 campuses in my district.

And I will be ordering that part.

It would be nice if the cheap, cotton reinforced Chinese belt were available. But the only source I could find for a 1mm pitch, 4mm wide, 757 tooth, involute tooth form belt is a USA firm that makes Kelvar belts and that only sells in oem quantity. The Southern California printer shop that runs this forum found them too and markets their belt, marked with the HP-equivalent part number. The URL is quoted extensively above. PrecisionRoller.com also sells a belt for a few dollars less, which I know nothing about except that it comes with a Torx driver. Both vendors provide instructions.

Just to be clear - this c4557-40049) belt works for 720C also? I ask because I did go to the link and when I did a search for the carriage drive belt it said there was none for 720C yet I have seen in earlier post people mentioning replacing the 720C belt with this one. Thanks.
Also for a novice do you think it will be hard to install?

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by moe (12/19/06 9:58 AM) reply + / -
The belt does work in a 720C. I'll have to have it added on the kit description. We have sold hundreds of them and have only had a handful of problems. Problems are mainly caused by people not being careful with the fragile plastic parts. Plastic will break if forced beyond its breaking point or if you are careless handling the metal parts around them.

Re: Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by Anonymous (12/19/06 3:24 PM) reply + / -
Thanks, that's good news. And besides being careful with the fragile parts is fairly easy to understand how to install this belt - I've never done anything like this before but can figure it out if it's in user friendly language and diagram.
I appreciate your feedback.

Excellent info. I just installed the belt and it works great.

The instructions were generally quite clear. I did manage to confuse myself on one point, so in the interest of blazing a trail for anyone else who might get confused, here's what I did. When removing the left end cap, I didn't realize that the clips you need to remove are not the ones you can see if you look at the bottom of the printer. They're further up, on the front and back faces of the end caps themselves, and not visible while the cap's installed. Put the screwdriver in the slot that's between the metal and the plastic. Ordered the belt for my eight year old HP 882C on Tuesday afternoon, and it arrived in the mail on Thursday. Less than 48 hours coast to coast!

Repair directions and photos were excellent. Spent a few hours replacing it and cleaning up the debris from the shredded belt. Most of the time was spent finding those #*&?*! plastic tabs to remove the end caps. Printer now works perfectly again.

My thanks to Moe. I now don't have to deep-six my $125+ investment in HP 23 and 45 ink cartridges. Best $36 I ever spent.

Hello, I've read thru the posts on this thread and also have the shredded belt issue on my HP722. Some of the 'threads' had gotten caught up on the right pully and prevented the cartridges from moving all the way to the left. I cut that part off, and now it prints, BUT, the black ink prints in thin horizontal lines, and the top line of each page isn't printed at all.

Before I buy the new belt (I saw all 10 links), I want to make sure there isn't something else that also needs fixing. I already tried a new ink cartridge, but no diff.

thanks,
Mike

Try checking the cartridge using the: Blot Test

A quick forum search should locate it.

There really are only 3 options for replacement of the belt. One is to scavenge a used one out of a model that uses it. Two is to buy a Chinese imitation belt (most of them I've seen are even higher priced). Three, is to buy the OEM belt from this site. We sell it for the same price as the mfg. used to sell it on their site and we provide replacement instructions. I'm sorry that you consider it blatant price-gouging, but if you want to see real blatant gouging, here's an OEM belt from a competitor http://www.everprint.com/online/SIMDetail.asp?partno=C4557-40049
I'm sorry that it had to be pitched ten times, but that's only because people are too lazy to read the thread and need to be spoon fed.

After been told in the UK that HP never made a replacment belt for my 710c I went on line and found this forum. After making contact and ordering a new belt for the 710, it turned up just over a week later, which I thought was excellent. I knew the belt came with instructions but throught these would just be a B/W photocopy, but no they were in full colour. It was obvious the picture's had been taken while a printer was been serviced and so made the whole process very easy. The job took just over an hour and now the printer works like a dream. You would think that a company like HP would want to help the environment instead of forcing people to throw away their old printers.

Thank agin to "fixyourownprinter" we need people like this.

Regards

Robert

I am in the frayed drive belt club now as well. I contacted HP, they told me where to order a new belt and said it was only a matter of unscrewing a couple of screws and very easy. So I paid 50.00 plus 13.00 S& H. Got the new belt and don't have a clue how to install it. There are no instructions. Do you have any help for me? thank you so much. (I would have got a new printer, but just had purchased new ink cartridges online recently) Thanks, rhonda

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by Bert (10/26/07 8:55 AM) reply + / -
In my opinion fixing your printer is a wise move. Its a solid machine other than belt breakage on some models. Its "cheap" to run because it uses some of the highest capacity cartridges that HP has produced. Most newer models keep you busy going to the office supply store for cartridges.

Deskjet 700, 800 Series, replacing the carriage drive belt

The carriage must be removed in order to remove the drive belt.

Removing the cover
1. Remove the two T10 Torx head screws on the top of the right and left covers.
2. Pull up on the right cover to disengage it where the removed screw went through.
3. From the back, near the clean-out cover, insert a screwdriver between the right cover and the base coming in from the bottom. Pry up and the cover will release.
4. Do the same operation in the front near the paper tray and the cover will release completely and hinge to the right.
5. Release the clip that secures the switches to free the cover from the printer.
6. Repeat steps 2-4 to remove the left cover.

Removing the carriage
1. Remove the encoder strip.
2. Depress the tensioner on the right to release the belt.
3. The large black adjusters retain the carriage rod and adjust its elevation. Mark them so they can be set to the same position upon reassembly.
4. Push the carriage to the extreme left.
5. Use a slot style screwdriver to pry the right adjuster outward so that it will release the carriage rod.

CAUTION! The wide 'fingers' retaining the small silver rollers are brittle. The carriage will drop downward when the carriage rod is removed which can break the silver roller retainers. Remove and reinstall the rod with care to avoid doing damage.

We ordered from you and have just installed the new belt for my HP Deskjet 882C printer. However, the ink cartridges do not seat themselves on the right when the power is off; nor do they go to the center when the power is turned on. Also, both the power light and the paper jam light are flashing. How do we get the print cartridges to behave properly? Thanks in advance for your help!

My husband just installed the new belt on the HP 882C Deskjet. We followed your instructions and they worked very well. Thank you for the information. It was greatly appreciated. We did however break one small portion of the finger that holds one of the small silver rollers into place. We tried running the printer with it off and the paper kept getting torn slightly in the spot where the roller was missing. So my husband set the roller into place and so far it is staying put and the paper looks fine. We will keep our fingers crossed. It would be a shame to junk it after all of this!

The upper paper guide is easy to break when you are changing the belt. If you need to replace it the HP P/N is C6409-40022, $28 online. You can also recycle one from the printers in the link below. A scrap printer is cheaper than the new part.

I have replacement instructions. Email me by clicking on the crossed tools to the right of my name. Ask for instructions for replacing the DJ 700 Series (same mechanism) upper paper guide.

I too am a victim of belt failure for my HP882c. I ordered a replacement belt, and installed it today with the help of the instructions from Bert and the photo instructions I got with the belt. It now works just like a new printer. While waiting for the belt, I took the time for a little preventive maintenance by thoroughly cleaning the cartrige resting tray (on the right side) by removing it and thoroughly washing it with very hot water (after removing the motor and removing the tray from the printer), plus, I vacuumed out all of the debris left in the printer that resulted when the old belt broke. Also, I may have inadverently discovered the cause of the belt failure. I removed the tensioner wheel on the right side of the printer, and discovered that it was not rolling freely. I guess the environment inside of the printer with dust and ink mist can gum up the wheel which means that the belt is under stress by sliding over the wheel rather than the wheel turning freely as it was designed to do, resulting in early belt failure. I removed the wheel, washed it thoroughly under hot water, dried it thoroughly, lubricated sparingly with a drop of WD40, and it now turns just like new. For those who have not lost a belt, maybe a little preventive maintenance as above may prevent the belt from breaking, extending the life of the printer. Hope that helps.

The belt on my 895Cse printer belt just shredded too. I agree with what Squidboy had to say about not throwing out something that can easily be fixed, and would rather keep my desk jet, now that we're hearing that laser jets aren't good for indoor air. Anyway, I can't find the belt on line. Any thoughts? Thanks! NJC

I'm not going to count how many times the link to the belt is on this thread or how many times on the forum. I direct your attention to the very top of this page, where it is very clearly and prominently displayed.

I ordered the new belt and installed it in about an hour, following the photos in the instructions. Everything seemed to go okay, but now the carriage won't move unless the ink cartridges are removed (or at least the lever on top of them that holds them in is flipped up as if I were going to remove them). Any suggestions as to what went wrong? If I take the ink cartridges out, the carriage moves freely.

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by moe (3/1/08 4:58 PM) reply + / -
First thing that comes to mind is that you didn't get the carriage rod back in or you moved the adjustment plate that holds it. It seems like the rod is too low. Without the cartridges in, it will move the carriage, but with the cartridges inserted, they are hitting the floor.

Add me to the list of people whose hp belt failed. I have a DeskJet 812C.

The belt of my HP DeskJet 710C looked as if it was exploded. I ordered a belt from this site, got it after 8 days (to Belgium), replaced it easily thanks to the pictures and now it runs as new.

Thanks.

I took the printer apart again. The carriage rod looks as if it was put back in correctly. I adjusted the black adjustment plates at either end of the rod, but never could get a setting that held the rod in a place that permitted free movement of the carriage when the ink cartridges were locked in place. Would you happen to know how the adjustment plates should be set? (Middle setting looks as if it should hold the rod down further, end settings look as if they should hold the rod up more.) Thanks for the help with the belt, and the good instructions. Now if I can just get the rod adjusted right, I'll be back in business with the brand new belt. And by the way, is there a common household product that gets printer ink off hands? I tried rubbing alcohol and fingernail polish remover with some success, but it didn't take it all off. Thanks!

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by Bert (5/3/08 2:43 PM) reply + / -
The adjustment cams should have been marked so they could be returned to their original settings. The cams were set at the factory using special tooling. All you can do is readjust them until the carriage moves freely during printing and the print quality is acceptable.

The color ink is dye based therefore it cannot be easily removed. I use pumice based cleaner available at auto parts stores. Mostly it has to wear off. I recommend wearing latex gloves to avoid getting your hands stained.

Fixed the belt issue on my r40, then turned it on to get this error message, "Cartridge blocked, close cartridge latches, turn off printer and turn back on." I was wondering if anyone had this same problem or had any suggestions. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! This must be some sort of timing issue between the Carriage and the Service Station. THANKS!!

Did you get the enoder strip properly threaded through the optical sensor in the cartridge assy.?

HP DeskJet 882c Carriage Blocked by kielym (11/25/08 8:33 AM) reply + / -
The cartridge carriage on my hp deskjet 882c is blocked just as it enters or exits its "garage" on the right. After attempting to move, it stops and the two upper lights on the right flash simultaneously.

I cannot determine what is blocking the carriage. One possibility seems to be a vertical flange on the double movable cartridge seats inside and on the bottom of the garage. Has a spring come unhooked or is an electromagnet not working properly?

Thanks.

Michael

The service station (garage) is jammed or its drive motor, HP P/N C5870-60004, has failed. Remove the case and clean the service station. If that fails to solve the problem the motor is most likely the culprit. They are available online for under $20.

Cleaning Deskjet 700, 800 Series Service Station

Prepare to get your hands dirty. You may want to wear latex gloves

To remove the service station do the following.
1. Remove the Torx (T10) screw on the top of the right cover.
6. There is one Torx (T10) screw in the front of the service station holding it in place. Remove the screw and unplug the motor cable, and the service station will lift from the front and slide out.
7. Scrape as much congealed ink as possible from inside the service station. Remove the Torx (T10) screw holding the motor in place and remove it.
8. Soak the service station in hot water to dissolve the ink. It will take a half-hour or so and a few rinsings to remove the ink.

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Carriage blocked by kielym (11/25/08 7:17 PM) reply + / -
Thank you, Bert.
There is apparently something blocking the movement of the carriage into and out of the service station. If I move the carriage, I can feel a definite resistance both ways at one point. That is why I thought it may be the flange of the cartridge seats at the bottom of the service station. The seat is movable and appears to be on a spring. Could it be that that part is not sitting where it should be? The movement of the carriage seems to be normal except at that one point.

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by Bert (11/25/08 8:11 PM) reply + / -
The sled (seat) does indeed have spring tension but it must completely retract, via the motor, or the carriage cannot go all the way to the right. When a print job is completed the carriage goes to the right, and the retracted sled comes forward and caps the cartridges so that they will not dry out while the printer is idle. The 'buzzing' sound that you hear when the printer is working normally is the motor.

I again suggested that you remove and clean the service station and potentially replace the motor to solve the problem.

I ordered the drive belt for an 882C printer (C4557-40049) and received it with good instructions. With the additional advice given in this forum, installation was fairly straightforward. However when I removed the axel (carriage rod)(step #9), it slip out with such force (pretty heavy part) that the ink cartridge carriage hit the upper paper guide (C6409-40022) and knocked out one of the four pinch rollers (C4557-20002) breaking the plastic slot that retains it in place. The printer seems to function all right without it, but is there any way to repair it back to original condition?

Re: HP DeskJet 882c Belt? by Bert (9/8/09 11:14 PM) reply + / -
There is no option but to replace the guide, P/N C6409-40022, since it retains the rollers. The lowest price I've seen online is $28. The other option is to find a scrap printer with a good guide. The printers on the web page below use the same part.

My HP color copier, model 170 drive belt shredded also, I called HP and they don't have any and they gave me Everprint - 1-800 984 5777. Part # is
C4557-40049, and the cost for belt was $90.00, this is crazy. If I can't find one much cheaper, I am going to toss it. Can anyone find it a lot cheaper?
I have a lot of new ink and I like the large ink cart., so I would prefer to keep it.
Thanks, Ron rolanddeffenb@mybluelight.com
