I may have screwed my fairly new (very expensive) Epson Photo 950. I was evaluating the "SSC Epson Service Utility Ver 2.91", it claims to be able to reset ink counters, waste ink counter etc. It has a set of functions labelled CSIC, supposed to reset the cartridge chips, for refilling etc.
I had just installed two new black cartidges so I thought no harm could come from resetting them, as a test sort of, well they would be full anyway so it couldn't do any harm, right. WRONG, the printer now although still apparently functional and responding to print jobs ignores the ink cartridges altogether.
The display in Status Monitor shows full levels on all cartidges but is grayed out (everything not just the blacks) and the printer is no longer reducing the levels with print jobs. The Information button is also grayed out and unresponsive. Clearly there is now a danger that the printer will eventually suck air instead of ink. I tested this by removing a cartridge and restarting Status Monitor, it still showed full cartridges and displayed "Ready To Print".
I tried more new cartridges hoping it was only a problem with the cartridge chips, no joy the problem remains. The printer is not communicating with the cartridges anymore, it doesn't even appear to care whether or not they're even installed.
I have emailed SSC about this problem, including an SSC Utility test report but to date I have been ignored. Unless I can resolve this problem the SSc Utility (with my assistance of course) will have damaged my printer beyond repair.
Anyone any ideas maybe or even better solutions, thanks in advance if anyone can help.

You don't give enough informations: what interface is used to connect printer? Which button did you press to reset your cartridge? From what you write, it seems to me that you have disabled the csic chip, function normally not available for the sp950, since it probably doesn't provide a command to reactivate it. My 777 has been working for six month now with the csic disabled and chip-less cartridges, but I haven't had any problem, because I refill cartridges on my own. You may contact the epson assistance, describing the problems you are facing, without mentioning the reset utility you used: as Denny Connaway previously indicated, they will problably supply you the procedure to reset the printer to default conditions, enabling the ink level monitor. You will be asked also to replace all the cartridges, since the informations stored in the printer are inconsistent with the residual ink level. Ssclg cannot offer any assistance to you, since they don't even have a 950 to study: anyway the functions offered have been thought for refillers, and are nearly useless with original cartridges,.

Thankyou for the reply. I am puzzled however, are you a representative of SSC, if they have no knowledge of this printer then how are they able to include it in their list of supported printers.
To answer your points :
(1) The printer is connected by USB (2) I pressed "Reset Black CSIC Counter" (3) The "Disable CSIC Function" button was as you say not available. (4) Refilling the cartridges was indeed my intention, however this is not now possible because the printer cannot know when a cartridge is empty. (5) There was not any mention in the program or help files that it was unsuitable for original cartridges.
I will as you suggest contact Epson Assistance.

No, I'm not involved with the sscserv project: I've had this information reading the posts in the forum. Support for printer has been added without direct testing, but simply studying the nvram content. Your problem may have been caused by a firmware update adopted in the 950 or by a conflict with the epson status monitor, but it's hard to say without having the printer. I'm sorry, I've used a unhappy expression "functions...are nearly useless with original cartridges", I didn't understand you wanted to refill the black cartridge, since I was sure that epson original carts are not suitable for refill, as I've found in several web sites, such as http://www.alotofthings.com/supportforrefillers/beyondthebluelabel.htm or http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/c80kits.html Have luck!
Ian: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer and I'm not framiliar with the "SSC Procedure" at all...Unfortunatly, Epson "may not" or more correctly, "probably will not" cover any needed repairs even if your printer is still under your origional warranty. When people use NON Epson inks or NON Epson Ink Cartridges, or try to reset Internal Epson Counters or reprogram Electrical Chips, with some other companies program, Epson will not take responsability for what ever damage, or problems occur to your printer. Basically you are taking your own chances that something can go wrong, when you are tring to use the INCORRECT INK in your printer, or trying to RESET CHIPS that were not designed by Epson to be reset, or even resetting INTERNAL COUNTERS on your own, especially if your printer is still under factory warranty. Your best bet is to call Epson Technical Support at 1-562-276-1300 and see if there is anything that their technician can suggest. If your printer is still under warranty, they will not normally charge you for the technical assistance...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Are your saying that the printer still prints correctly but just does not indicate changing ink levels?
Did you try the other commands like "Soft Reset" or "Power On Reset"?
I have an Epson 1270 so the CICS command is disabled on my version of SSC. But it has an Enable/Disable toggle action. Did you try that?
If you do run out of ink, I don't think it would be such a big deal since there are ways to refill 3rd party cartridges and get your printer working again. The Epson cartridges are not really good for refilling.

SSC version available as of 9/20/03 was 3.10 and included support for Photo 820 and 925. Highlights of latest revision changes (V 3.10,V 3.00, and V 2.91) are noted on site. Balance of detail (per site) is in the help file. I note that this group requests that one read all the instructions in the help file before doing anything with your printer. This software is freeware and not a polished commercial product...guess I would have avoided the experimentation noted in the first post

Heck I couldn't even get the fool program to function (v3.10), so maybe it's just as well. I've read several reviews raving about the app, but alas I've been foiled by the Windows world again and SSC won't recognize my 1200. Probably just as well...

I'm still trying to get the SSC prog (Ver3.10) to talk to my stylus scan 2500 to get the used ink tank full counter reset. Will the SSC do this or is there some other prog to do it? I have emptied the illustrious tank, !@*%?!#&%! thing! talk about playing hard to get at! Anyway I need to reset it before it lands in the skip like my HP scaner copier printer! Any help would be greatly appreciated

I use several Epson printers in my shop. I have C88+, R200, R220, 1280, and R1400. Red paper and ink lights flash rapidly, and reset does not work. I presently have 22 units down and counting. I do a lot of desktop publishing. Also, I need the reset code for the R 1400. Any service manual I can buy? I am in Trinidad. No Epson service centre here.

Re: SSC Service Utility by Niru (7/30/08 1:29 AM) reply
The SSC Service Utility has not been upgrades for some time, as far as I know. Also, it seems Epson has been putting a lot of new printer models on the market to combat the widespread use of bulk ink systems on their printers. Epson printers are particularly difficult to repair, and the built in function that shuts down the printer when the waste pads are supposedly full is quite unfair to users who are not in the USA and do not have service centers available. Still, the Epson printers are great and if you're lucky to get one that's trouble free, it's good value for money.
If I knew what the specific problem is, maybe I can help.

The Epson 290 is a new printer, the SSC utility does not support this printer. However, there is an option in the utility for an "Unsupported Model", you can try this. You can also call Epson Support. They have a site with the reset codes, you must have the serial number ready.
Re: SSC Service Utility by Zone8 (7/4/09 7:42 AM) reply
Usually, if you delete the printer from Control Panel - Printers, re-boot and reinstall most "problems" will disappear. Suggest you download latest software (drivers, etc.) from Epson website and re-install using that rather then original (on CD) version.
Try cleaning rollers by feeding thick card lightly soaked in rubbing alcohol. Clean large pickup roller in paper feed slot. Also, force feed thick card paper through printer to re-align rollers.

Re: Re: SSC Service Utility by websnail (10/5/09 12:43 PM) reply
You need to find a hardware chip resetter for your printer model (not software).
The SSC utility does not freeze or reset most of the cartridge chips on printers now, and SSCLG have done no development for over 18 months now so I expect the project and the utility to disappear sometime in the next year.
My Epson RX700 Printer works very well...Except it SUDDENLY began to print color with overall CYAN tint...Following results were "test print" COPIES onto high-gloss photo paper....Subject is excellent TEST PRINT (http://atlascopy.com/test_print.htm)...(1) Overall very light CYAN (blueish)tint on TEST PRINT copy...(2) Copy of bight-white plain paper shows overall very light CYAN tint...Had replaced all ink tanks...Ran large number of TEST PRINT copies onto plain paper...CYAN tint remained unchanged...Authorized Epson Repair Depot (Tech.) could not determine if problem PRINT HEAD or PC BOARD related...OPINION: Suspect "contamination" created high resistance path from source of voltage/signal to CYAN signal input sufficient to very slightly keep CYAN print head orfice(s) energized ?...Could be related to the rosin soldering flux used during "wave-soldering" of PC BOARD ?...Rosin fluxes are normally non-conductive/insulative...BUT...When "energized" by processing heat HYDROCHLORIC ACID is liberated TO DEOXIDIZE "clean" exposed copper conductor paths/soldering "pads"...Any subsequent humidity/moisture renders the residual "energized rosin" component highly conductive..."Fussy" (read: Mil-Spec) requirement involves dissolving/washing away the rosin then permitting water content of the solvent (typically denatured alcohol) to NEUTRALIZE the ACTIVE RESIDUAL of the flux...My intent: Disassemble printer, remove PC BOARD and "clean" as per above...COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS ???

Hi, I've just bought an Epson DX 8400, I got it cheeper as it was supposed to have a 'Dried ink problem' however when I turn it on it just says paper jam turn off & fix. The cartridges dont appear so I cant go any further. Needless to say there is no sign of any paper jamed or otherwise. Can anyone advise me on this? ie what to do? or if there is a program in ssc-csic? I would be greatfull. Cheers
Re: SSC Service Utility by cpdsltd (10/31/09 4:22 PM) reply
If the printer has been down for some time, you need to forse feed a thick piece of paper or card through the paper path. To do this, power on the printer, and hold down the paper button, release, hold down again. Then remove the cartridge, clean the contacts with a bit of alcohol, then replace. If the cartridges are empty, then replace. If there is dried ink in the heads, run the cleaning cycle a few times. However, never buy a used or defective printer, it's just not worth the little you paid for it.
Update on my Epson RX700 problem....(1) color prints of ONLINE photos are normal...Color prints of "COMPUTER-STORED" or DIRECT COPY have overall CYAN cast....This happened SUDDENLY while I was printing...It's as though printer "reads" photo information differently for the "STORED" and DIRECT COPY photos....My Epson CX8400 prints all three with normal color, no Cyan tint on the "STORED" or DIRECT COPY...For my money local Epson tech. couldn't figure out problem... Said it could be PRINT HEAD or internal "CHIP"....OPINION...ABSOLUTELY cannot be PRINT HEAD problem as that would cause tint ON ALL PRINTS !!!...Is there a "Reset Program/Code" to restore internal electronics to factory default ?....Have contacted Epson Support and "they don't get it"...Apparently fail to read specific that ONLINE photos print perfectly, but "STORED" and DIRECT COPY" photos have overall CYAN tint....Also informed them that all three print perfectly on my Epson CX8400 (no cyan tint)....Frustrating !!!....
Re: SSC Service Utility by Anonymous (11/1/09 5:58 AM) reply
You may want to check if the photos stored are CMYK bitmaps or RGB format. You may also want to check the programme you are printing from, and the colour settings in the program, not the printer settings.
"anonymous" response to my RX700 printer problem....".....You may want to check if the photos stored are CMYK bitmaps, etc...."....This doesn't make sense to me because the CX8400 printer generates ALL prints normal, with no Cyan tint onto any of the 3 described photo sources.....If problem were due to storage format then it would seem to me that BOTH printers ought to generate CYAN "contamination" on corresponding prints....
Re: SSC Service Utility by cpdsltd (11/2/09 4:13 AM) reply
Not quite true....Epson has a print CD programme for printers that print on CD, like the R1400, This programme will only print RGB jpegs, not CMYK. However, I see your point. I use several Epson models in my print shop, and never had that problem. If you saved the downloades prints that printed normal, then exported them again in RGB and CMYK formats, then printed them from different programmes, would they print differently?
Oops! cpdsitd, I messed up previous message...Wes, the Epson RX700 prints directly onto CDs and DVDs...Neglected to mention that these are also CYAN tinted...Received message from Epson Tech. Support...Not helpful...Will contact again and ask if I can mail (USPS) my prints from the RX700 and the corresponding (all normal appearing) prints from the CX8400 printer...Including letter identifying the prints and with further comments....Also to ask if Epson has a code/program to restore the RX700 to factory default...It seems to me this problem is likely a corruption of the internal programming...Because ONLINE photo prints are normal, the problem cannot be the PRINT HEAD itself...Hate to "garbage" the RX700...Expensive unit...Excellent machine, well made, excellent and rapid printing, handles all thickness of papers, prints onto CDs & DVDs....Economics resolve that cannot save just for ONLINE photos, and B&W text too expensive as some of the colors are used in order to maintain print head...If I get this thing fixed I'm considering obtaining a CIS unit for the inks...Fearful of and avoiding SSS Service Utility...Thanks...Appreciate all commentary...
