 | Re: canon bjc-6000 and all CANON BUBBLE JET PRINTERS by akbar (6/8/03 5:35 AM) reply | +1 + / - | Welcome to the twilight zone of the dead Canon bubblejet printer due to the "waste ink 'tank'" syndrome. And make no mistake Canon know about this problem!!!!
Your problem has been discussed at length in a previous forum posting for which the link is given below. A related link for possible solution is also provided.
I have the exact same problem with my BJC3000 printers and possibly a previous Canon printer which I binned mistakenly thinking it was dead.
My understanding of the situation is that Canon have deliberately designed a built in obsolescence factor in their bubble jet printers. I have come to this conclusion following discussions with Canon UK Service centre staff and a related Canon service centre to whom I was referred to by Canon UK.
Canon have designed these printers so that after a certain number of inkhead clean cycles the printer triggers a "waste ink tank" process and ceases to work. The only indication of this problem is the six orange light flashes followed by a green. It is not documented in the Canon Manual.
You have a choice of possible solutions, none of which are satisfactory! you could: (a) send your printer to Canon for service and repair for which you will be charged almost the cost of a new printer (it will be when you include carriage charges) (b) send the printer to an external service centre and again you will pay the cost of a new printer for a service (c) buy a new waste ink tank - which is actually nothing more than a felt pad! And you will then need to input a reset sequence to reprogram the printer waste ink tank counter to zero. However Canon will refuse to sell you the waste ink tank pad and they will not supply you with the reset sequence as they claim that it will invalidate your warranty or that it is a safety issue!!!!! Never mind the fact that the printer may already be out of warranty. To Canon's credit, I did find it quite a simple matter to open up the printer.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU UNPLUG THE PRINTER FROM THE MAINS SUPPLY BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE PRINTER TO ACCESS THE WASTE INK TANK PAD.
(d) use the printer as a expensive door stop (e) climb the highest cliff you can find and use it for a base drop (f) return it to Canon HQ as a defunct product.
I prefer the last option as it may shame Canon to resolve this problem at the point of manufacture.
I have sent an email to the MD of Canon UK to protest at what I believe is a deception on the part of Canon and have also copied it to TRADING STANDARDS. I believe that Canon printer users would have a case for legal action against Canon as Canon do not make it clear in the Manual that the printers have a limited lifespan even under normal average use and it is not sold as a "disposable product". I would advise you to write a letter of complaint to the Canon MD (address given below) and also to TRADING STANDARDS. The Canon MD will pass your letter to his PA to deal with, but do not let them fob you off.
It would be a simple matter for Canon to (a) provide information on this problem, (b) make the waste ink tank felt pads more easily available as a consumable item and (c) to install a simpler reset button for the waste ink tank or remove the trigger for this altogether and just recommend that the waste ink tank pad be replaced every so often.

My complaint email to the trading standards was as follows (I have had no response from them so far other than an acknowledgement by email):
"I am writing to complain about Canon's deliberate policy of designing their bubble jet printers with a limited lifespan. I own two Canon BJC 3000 printers. One stopped working with what I thought was a fault six months ago. The second one stopped working last week with an identical fault. I contacted Canon through their website and it appears that these printers are built with a "waste ink tank" which they said was full. On opening the printer I found that this waste ink tank is nothing more than a felt pad which once it is soaked stops the printer from working. Drying out the felt pad has no effect as apparently an internal switch is triggered once this occurs which stops the printer from working. Canon have refused to supply me with replacement felt pads (the waste ink tank) and have stated that even if I did get hold of these it would be no good as a "sequence would have to input" to reset the printers. However Canon have refused to divulge this "magical" sequence nor will they sell it on "as it is only known to Canon technicians". Canon are prepared to service the printers but extortionate cost £60 - the printer costs around £92 new. My complaint is basically when I purchased the printers I was not told about this problem of the waste ink tank nor that there was a sequence number that would be required to be input. In other words that the printers had been designed with an inbuilt limited lifespan. I believe that in view of this the product is not of merchantable quality as it is no longer fit for the purpose for which I bought it. And that this is known to Canon. Canon could easily have designed the printer for the felt pad to be a consumer replaceable item and for the sequence to be reset by means of a reset button. But they have not done this as the printer owner could just dry out the felt pad and reset the printer. But that would be too easy and of no profit to Canon. An external supplier is able to supply me with the replacement felt pads (the waste ink tank) but without the "special sequence" this is of no use to me. Canon will service the printer for £60.00 but at that price I could buy a new printer! The actual felt pad cannot cost more than a quid or so to produce, if that. An external supplier will sell it at £17.63. I have no problem with consumable items such as the felt pad or inks requiring replacing as long as I know about them at the outset and am able to replace them myself. However, this is not made public knowledge nor is it in the printer manuals. Incidentally the printers were purchased from PC WORLD in Manchester. However, I don't feel that they are responsible for this deliberate design flaw, although they should have informed me of the limited lifespan. Apparently I am now told that this limited lifespan affects all inkjet printers."
The more people that complain to trading standards and Canon, the more likely Canon will do something about this problem. After all would you buy a car if it was going to suddenly stop working after so many rotations of the wheel and the only remedy was to get it repaired at the cost of a new car. Probably not!

 | Re: Canon BJC-6000 : Error 6 beeps w/ Steady Orange light by Russ Wright (6/8/03 6:42 AM) reply | + / - | this is a BJ CARTRIDGE Error (printhead)
Re-install the Printhead(s) or replace it
The printer is unable to detect one of the printheads.
AKBAR, you are mistaken
|
 | Re: canon bjc-6000 by Akbar (6/8/03 6:54 AM) reply | + / - | Thanks Russ, but I am going on information supplied to me by Canon technical support (the horses mouth as it were).
If they themselves don't know their own printers then it's a poor show on them. Anyway it does not change the "waste ink tank" full error message timebomb issue.
|
 | Re: canon bjc-6000 by Akbar (6/8/03 10:18 AM) reply | + / - | Apologies Russ & Frank-d. I stand corrected. This message is not the same as the "waste ink tank full" error. Sorry for any confusion.
[However everything I said about the "waste ink tank full" error timebomb still applies.]

 | Re: canon bjc-6000 by boyblue0101 (6/12/03 12:59 PM) reply | + / - | I have a BJC-610 (6100)
I think I have that Waste Ink Tank Full error.
Any suggestions on how to handle it?
Where do I get new "sponges"? Is it that white rubbery thing under the print head? (Cause it isn't really soaked/dirty.)
I know about the reset code. Haven't tried it for fear that the ink would leak/overflow.
Love my printer, don't really want to let it go. :)
(Sorry I'm not too technical.)

 | Re: canon bjc-6000 - waste tank full by Akbar (6/12/03 9:30 PM) reply | + / - | Hi boyblue0101
The actual "waste tank full" error is 10 beeps + 6 flashes of the power light.
As Russ stated the 6 beeps error is a new cartridge (printhead) error.
You may view the bjc-6000 manual on http://www.precision.com/Printer%20Manuals/Canon%20BCJ6000.pdf
The error codes are in section 5-13.
I am not familiar with the internal layout of the bjc-6000, but expect it is not too dis-similar to the bjc-3000. In the bjc-3000 the "waste ink tank" is actually a "felt" like material under a white polystrene foam like material. To get to it, you have to remove the case of the printer and it is at the very bottom beneath the printer paper rollers and electronics.
CAUTION UNPLUG YOUR PRINTER FROM THE MAINS SUPPLY BEFORE YOU DISMANTLE IT. WARNING - OPENING UP YOUR PRINTER WILL VOID THE LIMITED WARRANTY GIVEN BY CANON.
If your waste tank is full, it wont be white but will be black+other colours and will have the appearance of being soaked with waste ink.
CAUTION HANDLE WITH GLOVES ON AS THE WASTE INK GETS EVERYWHERE AND IS NOT EASY TO WASH OUT!
I washed my felt pad by soaking and rinsing in lots of cold water and dried it with a hot air drier and reused it. But it is a very messy process.
In the UK you can get a new "waste ink tank" by contacting:
Electroversal, Unit 1, Ribocon Way, Luton LU4 9UR Telephone: 01582-582-023
I was quoted around £17.00 for a felt pad for the bjc-3000. Canon UK themselves will refuse to sell this to you.

 | Re: canon bjc-6000 by Andy Owens (8/4/03 2:23 PM) reply | + / - | Hi,
I'm in the U.S. and I got this message today on my BJC-2010 upon installing a brand new ink cartridge. I thought I'd installed it wrong, but when the error message informed me to take my printer to an authorized service center, I thought I'd be shopping for a new printer. Then I found this web site and used the link at the top to input the reset sequence WITHOUT changing any felt pad. The printer reset on the first try and it now working PERFECTLY. Just like it did last week. How bizarre. I'm definitely going to e-mail canon about this. I've been a customer for 10 years, owning 3 BJ printers (two of which I dropped). This one I've really taken care of and kept dust free. Thanks for letting me know about this. I almost spent another $100 or so on a new printer when this one works fine!
Regards,
Andy

 | Re: canon bjc-6000 by hopeful (8/11/03 10:24 PM) reply | + / - | Hi
I found the above messages a bit confusing. I am getting 6 orange flashes and then one green flash on my non working Canon BJC-3000 printer.
The Canon office in Qld, Australia said that this was a Waste Ink Tank full message and to bring it in for repair.
If it is a printhead error message, then does that mean the printheads (whatever they look like), need replacing? Are these purchaseable from somewhere?
Thanks for any help.
Do you agree with the Canon Centre's opinion? Does anyone have the reset sequence handy? (I'm not sure which link Andy used).

 | Can't get the reset to work for the Canon BJC-6000 by Mehlers (11/9/03 7:09 AM) reply | + / - | Thanks to all for helping us sad Canon owners. I was wondering if someone could help me out. I've tried the reset sequence about 2 dozen times now (each time trying to follow the tip listed). Here's what happens:
1) When the power is turned off, while holding down the RESUME button, press and hold the POWER button. The green indicator will light up. 2) While holding down the POWER button, release the RESUME button. Then double-click the RESUME button and release the POWER button.
THE SECOND I RELEASE THAT POWER BUTTON the printer starts up and I get the dreaded 6 beeps again. What am I doing wrong. I tried all sorts of double click proceedures. Any advice? Thanking you in advance.

Lasers do too, but are almost always replaced with the toner cartridge (either as part of it, or as a separate unit).

is this mean that i have the same problem too?
btw, the light in my opinion is just fine... no error blink etc.

 | Re: Canon BJC-3000 waste tank full by Grateful (12/21/03 12:35 AM) reply | -1 + / - | Thanks to this site and PRINTX for the instructions for curing this problem and giving my printer a new lease of life, as I was just about to dump it when I came across this site.
Although I did rehearse the re-setting instructions well, for some reason it did not work the first time, but I got away with doing a second time.
I am now considering whether or not to dismantle the whole thing as in http://www.sitemaster-internet.co.uk/bjc6500/ to clean out the tank/felt pads.
Incidentally the fault was so bad, the print head was that dead it would not even move to the park position to allow the ink tanks to be taken out. I will be writing to Canon as I agree this is criminal.

 | Re: Re: canon bjc-6000 by Anonymous (2/9/05 9:18 PM) reply | + / - | First of all, go to the website http://www.sitemaster-internet.co.uk/bjc6500 which I followed with great interest. It gives you a step by step pictorial dismantling procedure. Without it I would not have managed. My BJC-3000 is almost identical to the 6000 and 6500, except for the removal of the upper part of the case.
In the following I give a few pointers which may be helpful:
The two high-desity sponges were oozing with black and discoloured ink and I had no problem removing these, protecting my hands with a pair of rubber gloves, and placing them in a rectangular glass baking dish of at least 36cm x 9cm wide. I then let water from the garden hose run into the the dish at a slow and steady pace while exerting an on and off pressure with the narrow end of a brick until the water became clear. This process really worked well on a slopy grass surface and took about 45 minutes of patience!
I then expelled most of the water through external pressure on a hard flat surface and suspended the sponges between the bedsheets and my underpants on the rotary hoist in direct sunlight. It took a full day for the thicker sponge to dry as water got trapped behind the polystyrene adhesive.
I then attempted the assembly which took only 15 minutes.
I then followed the reply by PRINTX, for the programming, straight from the Canon service manual on my first attempt. If you can't find the procedure, I'll copy it and send it to you.
Believe you me, it's no big deal to carry out above procedures. For any further info please contact me.

 | Re: Re: canon bjc-6000 by terryt (4/15/05 9:34 AM) reply | + / - | Canon S series printers use the following sequence.
1. Hold the resume button while powering on. 2. When powered on release the resume button and then press it twice. 3. The printer carriage should move and quit the light should be green. 4. Press the resume button 4 times and then press the power button to turn it off.
If the power button doesn't shut down the printer remove the power cable.
If you can't get the printer to stop blinking during the reset portion of the above sequence remove the print head and try again.

 | Canon bjc-6500 Eeprom by Mario1962 (6/15/06 9:27 AM) reply | + / - | Hello there. I need some help to fix my BJC-6500. I encountered the "infamous" waste ink pad error and I tried to unlock the printer using the button sequence codes. Unfortunately something went wrong and now my printer seems to be dead. No power up if I press the power button but, if I do this way the printer goes on, with yellow led on. Press power and form feed then connect power cord. Then release form feed while keeping power button pressed and press form feed again twice. Then I can release the power button. The printer can't do anything but my pc finds it. Plug and play still works and the pc recognise the printer as 6100. So the printer is not totally dead. What I would need is reprogramming the eeprom. Anyone out there can help me? I have all I would need to do the job. I reprogrammed a PC's bios chip time ago and this should be almost the same. I "only" need an original chip, or the data, to reprogram my gone eeprom.
Many, many thanks in advance.
Have a nice day,

The auto sheet feeder motor is dead or, more likely there's a problem on the main board, with no power to the motor. The printer feeder just quit working. There was no warning or sign of a problem. There fore the trouble is likely with the associated circuts on the board.

Or to push the "on" button, release it, and then release the resume button? Also, must this all be done after replacing the pad? If so, where do you get that replacement pad? Sorry to be dumb. - Meg

The rollers that grip the paper to pull it through for printing are probably slick and in need of reconditioning or replacing. Most like the first thing I mentioned. There are certain chemicals you can purchase to put on the rollers that we bring them back to life.

 | Re: canon bjc-6200 by gra (1/12/07 2:33 AM) reply | + / - | I am in Italy. I have the problem of the "waste ink tank full" with my printer Canon Bjc 6200 (led blinking six yellow and one green). The Canon service foresee a budget of 80€ for the service activities. I have disassembled my printer and washed the felts (waste tanks) in warm water with bleach and then only water until to have a good result and reassembled to their place after drying. I have not succeeded to reset the printer till now, also following the various procedures found online, but I will make other attempts. Has someone of you succeeded with the Bjc 6200? hi Graziano

 | Re: Re: canon bjc-3000 by Mario Nava (3/24/07 4:35 AM) reply | + / - | You probably have to replace the ink head assembly. I had to do the same with my BJC-6500 time ago. I got an error that was similar to er waste tank one but it was not. Well. It was not the only one error. Once fixed the waste pad error I had to replace the head too. Now it works perfectly. If you have any change to got a same printer try change the head and see what happens. Bye

 | Re: canon bjc-6000 by Esnir (4/10/07 3:24 AM) reply | + / - | Hi,
I experienced this problem on my 7 years old canon bjc 6500: at start, the printer beeps 6 times and the led continues to blink yellow/green. Printer did not respond to anything (e.g. opening the printer for replacing ink tanks did not make the printer showing them in the middle of the carrier)
I solved it with information from this website:
Service Mode Operations 1) When the power is turned off, while holding down the RESUME button, press and hold the POWER button. The green indicator will light up. 2) While holding down the POWER button, release the RESUME button. Then double-click the RESUME button and release the POWER button. (The indicator blinks in orange/green every time the RESUMEbutton is pressed.) 3) The green indicator blinks while initial operations are in progress. When the indicator lights (stops blinking), press the RESUME button to select one of the followings. (The indicator blinks in orange/green every time the RESUMEbutton is pressed.) Press Indicator Functions
2 times Lights in Green EEPROM initialization (Clears the settings to the factory default, except the model settings)
After that i switched it off and on again, and the printer was back online.
Thanks to printx for providing this information, which i quoted from his reply on this page.

 | Re: Re: canon bjc-6000 by Anonymous (5/25/07 12:12 PM) reply | + / - | This reset procedure worked to eliminate the 7 orange blinking lights on my Canon S530D. My printer would not work at all with the orange lights blinking and it is now working perfectly. Thanks.

 | Re: canon bjc-6000 by Esnir (8/23/07 12:50 PM) reply | + / - | By chance, i had the same thing last week: printer not working with 6 beeps and yellow flashing LEDS.
Following the instructions i posted earlier didn't work.
After replacing the color inkcartridge with a new one, the error was gone.
